FangNet: Mining herb hidden knowledge from TCM clinical effective formulas using structure network algorithm

The use of herbs to treat various human diseases has been recorded for thousands of years. In Asia's current medical system, numerous herbal formulas have been repeatedly verified to confirm their effectiveness in different periods, which is a great resource for drug innovation and discovery. Through the mining of these clinical effective formulas by network pharmacology and bioinformatics analysis, important biologically active ingredients derived from these natural products might be discovered. As modern medicine requires a combination of multiple drugs for the treatment of complex diseases, previously clinical formulas are also combinations of various herbs according to the main causes and accompanying symptoms. However, the herbs that play a major role in the treatment of diseases are always unclear. Therefore, how to rank each herb's relative importance and determine the core herbs, is the first step to assisting herb selection for active ingredients discovery. To solve this problem, we built the platform FangNet, which ranks all herbs on their relative topological importance using the PageRank algorithm, based on the constructed symptom-herb network from a collection of clinical empirical prescriptions. Three types of herb hidden knowledge, including herb importance rank, herb-herb co-occurrence, and associations to symptoms, were provided in an interactive visualization. Moreover, FangNet has designed role-based permission for teams to store, analyze, and jointly interpret their clinical formulas, in an easy and secure collaboration environment, aiming at creating a central hub for massive symptom-herb connections. A Novel Architecture for Intrusion Detection in Mobile Ad hoc Network

Today’s wireless networks are vulnerable in many ways including illegal use, unauthorized access, denial of service attacks, eavesdropping so called war chalking. These problems are one of the main issues for wider uses of wireless network. On wired network intruder can access by wire but in wireless it has possibilities to access the computer anywhere in neighborhood. However, securing MANETs is highly challenging issue due to their inherent characteristics. Intrusion detection is an important security mechanism, but little effort has been directed towards efficient and effective architectures for Intrusion Detection System in the context of MANETs. We investigate existing Intrusion Detection Architecture design Issues, challenges and proposed a novel architecture based on a conceptual model for an IDS agent that lead to a secure collaboration environment integrating mobile ad hoc network and the wired backbone. In wireless/mobile ad hoc network, the limited power, weak computation capabilities of mobile nodes, and restricted bandwidth of the open media impede the establishment of a secure collaborative environment.

Event Abstract Back to Event Working in the clouds: creating an e-science collaborative environment for neurophysiology Colin Ingram1* 1 University of Newcastle, Institute of Neuroscience, United Kingdom Understanding the way that neural networks function can only be achieved through detailed analysis of the spatio-temporal relationships between activity patterns of neurones within the network. The increasing sophistication of multielectrode and optical recording techniques has provided the means for us to explore the control and organisation of neural networks in ever greater detail. However, whilst developments in neuroinformatics offer new ways in which the large volumes of data generated from such techniques may be manipulated and analysed, there is a growing need to develop an infrastructure to support sharing and collaborative exploitation of these data. Cloud computing provides exciting opportunities for this exploitation with rapidly increasing availability of data storage and compute resource accessed through the web. However, any practical solution to supporting analysis and sharing of time-series neurophysiological data needs to address a number of major challenges, including interoperability of file formats, data visualisation, and effective metadata descriptions. These challenges are being addressed through a number of international research projects, including CARMEN (Code Analysis, Repository and Modelling for e-Neuroscience; www.carmen.org.uk), an open access web platform developed for handling time-series data using distributed computing technology. CARMEN has created a secure collaborative environment in which data can be shared, either between private groups or publicly, and new analysis algorithms can be deployed without restrictions of issues of software and file compatibility. The on-going implementation of an enactment engine is enabling service applications to be linked into more complex and user-defined workflows. The cloud architecture allows the co-location of data and computation and enabling users to conduct their science through a web browser. Furthermore the growing data repository enables maximum exploitation of data that are often difficult and expensive to produce. CARMEN is one example of the shift from small scale science to large scale data integration which will underpin the next major steps in understanding the brain. Infrastructure built on cloud computing will make this integration feasible and will offer new opportunities to build a global community for neuroscience. A secure collaborative web-based environment for virtual organisations

The concept of the Virtual Organisation (VO) is a natural outcome of network evolution and the growth of collaborative work tools. In the projects Value Improvement thought a Virtual Aeronautical Collaborative Enterprise (VIVACE) and Transglobal Secure Collaboration Program (TSCP), we studied the different issues when setting VOs up. In this paper, we expose the requirements and characteristics of VOs through a use case where the partners produce a technical aeronautic specification, which was proposed by those consortiums. Then, we present a secured collaborative environment that we have deployed to deal with VO security constraints. It combines attribute-based access control models, privileges management infrastructure and identity federation to make VOs more dynamic.

Public Health Informatics and the H1N1 Pandemic

On June 11th 2009, Dr. Margaret Chan, Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), announced that the Influenza alert level was being raised from a Phase 5 to Phase 6 indicating the start of the 2009 Pandemic. The pandemic resulted from a previously uncirculated strain of H1N1 Influenza which spread rapidly in the spring of 2009. The second wave of the pandemic began as schools reopened in the late summer. At the time of the writing of this commentary, H1N1 was widely spread in 48 states and Canada. Due to the intensive surveillance and preparedness activities surrounding a rapidly spreading avian H5N1 influenza, the WHO and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, were able to closely monitor the progression of the H1N1 strain in the human population and initiate an accelerated vaccination program. This heightened activity comes at a time of reduced budgets for state and local health departments who have primary responsibility for monitoring and containment within their jurisdictions. As resources become more limited, public health workers are forced to focus their attention on the most urgent priorities. In order to effectively multi-task, public health must leverage new technologies to get more done with existing resources. Public health informatics is an emerging field that has the potential to immediately support the ten essential public health services. Automated case specific disease monitoring applications can now collect, analyze and present to the user information that would have taken days to assemble only a few years ago. Applications such as ESSENCE, RODS, and BioSense have been able to monitor spread of H1N1 at state, local, and national levels. The Internet has become an educational tool for informing the population on the latest research to maintain and improve health. The websites of local health departments, CDC, WHO, WebMD, Google and many others have all seen increased activity as primary caregivers seek information on how to protect their family members from H1N1. Emerging knowledge repositories showcased at national conferences have demonstrated the ability to transparently provide public health alerts to clinicians during patient encounters. Information is provided to support disease management while enhancing real-time monitoring. The Internet provides a secure collaborative environment to support public health monitoring across jurisdictional boundaries. The DiSTRIBuTE project creates a national view of H1N1 trends from data provided by public health agencies across the country that have the desire to collaborate with their counterparts in other jurisdictions. These are just a few public health informatics applications that support H1N1 containment. As the field of public health informatics expands, its researchers and developers must keep in mind the goal of translating their achievements into open environment so that their informatics products can be made available to public health practitioners when they are needed. Traditionally, informatics tools are presented to the community at conferences and through journal articles. Local public health funding limitations may restrict travel at conferences or membership in societies that publish articles in their journals. The Online Journal of Public Health Informatics (OJPHI) provides an open access vehicle that supports the presentation of the latest open source informatics tools to the public health community to support their translation to practice. As an open access communications vehicle to public health, articles published in OJPHI could provide knowledge of an open source informatics tools to help public health manage the next emerging health risk.

Cross‐domain authorization for federated virtual organizations using the myVocs collaboration environment

AbstractThis paper describes our experiences building and working with the reference implementation of myVocs (my Virtual Organization Collaboration System). myVocs provides a flexible environment for exploring new approaches to security, application development, and access control built from Internet services without a central identity repository. The myVocs framework enables virtual organization (VO) self‐management across unrelated security domains for multiple, unrelated VOs. By leveraging the emerging distributed identity management infrastructure. myVocs provides an accessible, secure collaborative environment using standards for federated identity management and open‐source software developed through the National Science Foundation Middleware Initiative. The Shibboleth software, an early implementation of the Organization for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards Security Assertion Markup Language standard for browser single sign‐on, provides the middleware needed to assert identity and attributes across domains so that access control decisions can be determined at each resource based on local policy. The eduPerson object class for lightweight directory access protocol (LDAP) provides standardized naming, format, and semantics for a global identifier. We have found that a Shibboleth deployment supporting VOs requires the addition of a new VO service component allowing VOs to manage their own membership and control access to their distributed resources. A Resource Allocation Mechanism Providing Trust and Incentive in Grid

In grid environment, when every participating node tries to maximize its own utility, the overall utility of the collaboration drops. In the worst case scenario, grid resources are easily depleted due to selfish users taking free rides without offering any sharing resource. Certain resource management scheme has to be implemented on grid systems to ensure them working properly and to achieve better scalability. In this paper, the relationship of resources incentive and allocation in the grid is discussed. In grid computing, the evaluation of shared resource is the key to allocate and manage them. To address the issue, the price strategy of sellers and an adaptive trust-incentive compatible resource allocation mechanism ATIM (adaptive trust-incentive compatible resource allocation) are presented to ensure the balance of supply and demand, promote the users to share valuable resource, and maximize resource utility. Intending for a secure collaborative environment, the framework considers the factors of trust and economy to ensure the steady development of grid resource market. This approach is also evaluated by comprehensive experiments in CROWN (China research and development environment over wider-area network).

The collaborative edge: patient empowerment for vulnerable populations

Objective: The problems with access to care and the special needs for educational outreach for disadvantage or vulnerable populations of patients require innovation. This paper describes Baby CareLink use of information technology to support communication, consultation, and collaboration among colleagues as well as with patients, their families, and community resources. Methods: In response to the educational, emotional and communication needs of parents of premature infants and the clinicians who care for the infants and support the families, we developed Baby CareLink, a secure collaborative environment. Baby CareLink provides a nurturing environment where parents, even though remote from the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, can actively participate in decisions surrounding their baby's care. Results: In a southeastern hospital serving a mostly Medicaid population in a rural setting, more than 300 parents have used Baby CareLink more than 11 000 times during the past year. Despite the common wisdom that Medicaid families do not have access to the Internet, approximately 85% of the parents access Baby CareLink from home, at work, from the library or other public access point. The median use of Baby CareLinks from outside the hospital by parents is 17 separate sessions. In a city hospital in the midwestern US which exclusively serves a Medicaid population, experience has been equally encouraging. More than 70 parents have initiated more than 600 secure sessions with Baby CareLink. In contrast to the rural hospital, only 35% of sessions have been initiated outside the hospital. Discussion: Experience with Baby CareLink suggests that families from all walks of life will use and benefit from collaborative tools that keep them informed and involved in the care of their children. The most significant barrier to wider deployment is bandwidth limitations into the homes of most families. The care of premature infants is a great example of an area where medical knowledge and ability has grown dramatically, and where information and communication technology holds enormous potential.
