Palm oil mill secondary effluent treatment using ZNO-clay liquid photocatalyst in membrane photocatalytic reactor

In recent years, photocatalytic treatment of palm oil mill secondary mill effluent (POMSE) incorporating ZnO nanoparticles with various types of capping agents via membrane photocatalytic reactor (MPR) has gained great interest among researchers. Nevertheless, most of previous studies have employed a rather time-consuming oven drying and calcination method to synthesise ZnO in powder form. Therefore, a simpler synthesis method is considered necessary. In this study, ZnO-clay was synthesised in liquid form using the precipitation method, without undergoing oven drying and calcination. The effect of different ZnO-clay ratios on the degradation performance of POMSE via MPR was also examined. Results indicated that ZnO-clay 1:3 was efficient in BOD removal percentage, while the removal percentages of COD, colour and turbidity were higher for ZnO-clay 1:5 compared to other ratios.

Cobalt single-atom catalyst tailored ceramic membrane for selective removal of emerging organic contaminants

Water reuse is an effective way to solve the issues of current wastewater increments and water resource scarcity. Ultrafiltration, a promising method for water reuse, has the characteristics of low energy consumption, easy operation, and high adaptability to coupling with other water treatment processes. However, emerging organic contaminants (EOCs) in municipal wastewater cannot be effectively intercepted by ultrafiltration, which poses significant challenges to the effluent quality and sustainability of ultrafiltration process. Here, we develop a cobalt single-atom catalyst-tailored ceramic membrane (Co1-NCNT-CM) in conjunction with an activated peroxymonosulfate (PMS) system, achieving excellent EOCs degradation and anti-fouling performance. An interfacial reaction mechanism effectively mitigates membrane fouling through a repulsive interaction with natural organic matter. The generation of singlet oxygen at the Co-N3-C active sites through a catalytic pathway (PMS→PMS∗→OH∗→O∗→OO∗→1O2) exhibits selective oxidation of phenols and sulfonamides, achieving >90% removal rates. Our findings elucidate a multi-layered functional architecture within the Co1-NCNT-CM/PMS system, responsible for its superior performance in organic decontamination and membrane maintenance during secondary effluent treatment. It highlights the power of integrating Co1-NCNT-CM/PMS systems in advanced wastewater treatment frameworks, specifically for targeted EOCs removal, heralding a new direction for sustainable water management.

MnO2@CS modified catalytic membrane for simultaneous organics removal and membrane fouling mitigation via peroxymonosulfate activation

The integration of advanced oxidation process and ultrafiltration membrane has been regarded as an effective method to improve pollutants removal and mitigate membrane fouling simultaneously in the field of wastewater treatment. Hence, a novel catalytic membrane microreactor, referred to as MnO2@CS-UF, was synthesized via coupling MnO2 modified carbon spheres (MnO2@CS) with membrane. The mesoporous structure of MnO2@CS guaranteed adequate water transfer channels and also contributed to more exposure of active sites. With MnO2@CS uniformly dispersed, the MnO2@CS-UF membrane showed increased hydrophilicity, higher permeability and superior peroxymonosulfate (PMS)-activation capability. With synergistic effect of pore interception and catalytic degradation, MnO2@CS-UF showed excellent organic pollutants removal (MB removal of about 100 % in 5 min), and had a prominent mitigation effect on membrane fouling caused by model NOM. In addition, MnO2@CS-UF/PMS system showed excellent catalytic filtration performance in the treatment of actual secondary effluent (SE). MnO2@CS-UF/PMS system could effectively remove fluorescent organics, and the removal rates of I-V region were 36.3 %, 72.3 %, 67.7 %, 73.5 % and 71.4 %, respectively. The permeance decline of MnO2@CS-UF was also effectively alleviated, with irreversible and reversible resistances reduced by 61.0 % and 23.2 % than UF membranes, individually. High-valent manganese-oxo species and singlet oxygen played a leading role in contaminants elimination, whereas radical oxidation acted as auxiliary contributors. Standard blocking became the dominant fouling pattern for MnO2@CS-UF/PMS, demonstrating that the MnO2@CS catalytic layer ensured the synthesis of vast active substances, prevented foulant adhesion on pore walls and alleviated the growth of cake layer. These results illustrated that the integration of MnO2@CS catalytic degradation and membrane filtration was feasible to improve the permeate quality and mitigate membrane fouling in wastewater reclamation.

Disinfection by-products control in wastewater effluents treated with ozone and biological activated carbon followed by UV/Chlor(am)ine processes

Sequential utilization of ozone (O3) and biological activated carbon (BAC) followed by UV/chlor(am)ine advanced oxidation process (AOP) has drawn attention in water reuse. However, the formation of disinfection by-products (DBPs) in this process is less evaluated. This study investigated the DBP formation and the relevant toxicity during the O3-BAC-UV/chlor(am)ine treatment of sand-filtered municipal secondary effluent. DBP formation in UV/chlorine and UV/dichloramine (NHCl2) processes were compared, where the impact of key operational parameters (e.g., UV wavelength, pH) on DBP formation were comprehensively evaluated. O3-BAC significantly reduced DBP formation potential (DBPFP) (58.2 %). Compared to UV/chlorine AOP, UV/NHCl2 AOP reduced DBP formation by 29.7 % in short-time treatment, while insignificantly impacting on DBPFP (p > 0.05). UV/NHCl2 AOP also led to lower calculated cytotoxicity (67.7 %) and genotoxicity (55.9 %) of DBPs compared to UV/chlorine AOP. Compared to 254 nm UV light, the utilization of 285 nm UV light decreased the formation of DBPs in wastewater treated with the UV/chlorine AOP and UV/NHCl2 AOP by 31.3 % and 19.2 %, respectively. However, the cytotoxicity and genotoxicity in UV/NHCl2 AOP using 285 nm UV light increased by 83.4 % and 58.5 %, respectively, compared to 254 nm. The concentration of DBPs formed in the UV/NHCl2 AOP at pH 8 was 54.3 % lower than that at pH 7, suggesting a better control of DBPs at alkaline condition. In the presence of bromide, UV/NHCl2 AOP tended to generate more brominated DBPs than UV/chlorine AOP. Overall, UV/NHCl2 AOP resulted in lower concentration and toxicity of DBPs compared to UV/chlorine AOP.

Different mobile counter ion types of magnetic ion-exchange resin coupling with ozonation treatment of the organic matter, antibiotic resistance genes, and pathogens in secondary effluent

Advanced treatment and reuse of secondary effluents (SE) from wastewater treatment plants is considered an effective method of alleviating the conflict between water supply and demand. However, the effective removal of organic matter, antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), and pathogens in SE is key to ensure the safety of reclaimed water. In this study, the effectiveness of three types of magnetic ion-exchange resins (R-X, where X refers to –OH, –HCO3, and -Cl) coupled with ozonation (R + O) in reducing different types of carbon, pathogens, intracellular and extracellular antibiotic resistance genes (iARGs and eARGs), and microbial communities in SE was investigated. The results indicated that R-Cl was the best pre-treatment resin for ozonation. R-Cl + O (8 mL/L R-Cl adsorption for 30 min, followed by 15 min of 8 mg/L ozonation) achieved removal efficiencies of 49.7 %, 86.6 %, 99.9 %, 87.1 %, and 99.9 % for dissolved organic carbon, UV254, ΣiARGs, ΣeARGs, and Σpathogens, respectively. Ozonation was more effective than resin adsorption in the removal of ARGs, and R-Cl + O had the lowest rebounding potential for iARGs and pathogens. In addition, R-OH had the lowest removal efficiency of organic matter, iARGs, and pathogens compared to other types of resins owing to the electrostatic repulsion mechanism. Molecular dynamics simulations and average reduced density gradient analysis revealed that the quaternary amine sites of the resin had a positive surface electrostatic potential, which could firmly adsorb double-stranded deoxyribonucleic acid by electrostatic action. Ozonation effectively reduced the risk of ARGs and pathogens in the effluent of resin. The R + O treatment reduced organic matter, ARGs, and pathogens more effectively than single treatment, despite the different anionic groups of the resin.

Coagulative removal of polystyrene microplastics from aqueous matrices using FeCl3-chitosan system: Experimental and artificial neural network modeling

Effluent from sewage treatment plants (STPs) is a significant source of microplastics (MPs) re-entry into the environment. Coagulation-flocculation-sedimentation (CFS) process as an initial tertiary treatment step requires investigation for coagulative MPs removal from secondary-treated sewage effluents. In this study, experiments were conducted on synthetic water containing 25 mg/L polystyrene (PS) MPs using varying dosages of FeCl3 (1–10 mg/L) and chitosan (0.25–9 mg/L) to assess the effect of process parameters, such as pH (4−8), stirring speed (0–200 rpm), and settling time (10–40 min). Results revealed that ∼89.3% and 21.4% of PS removal were achieved by FeCl3 and chitosan, respectively. Further, their combination resulted in a maximum of 99.8% removal at favorable conditions: FeCl3: 2 mg/L, chitosan: 7 mg/L, pH: 6.3, stirring speed: 100 rpm, and settling time: 30 min, with a statistically significant (p < 0.05) effect. Artificial neural network (ANN) validated the experimental results with RMSE = 1.0643 and R2 = 0.9997. Charge neutralization, confirmed by zeta potential, and adsorption, ascertained by field-emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), were primary mechanisms for efficient PS removal. For practical considerations, the application of the FeCl3-chitosan system on the effluents from moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR) and sequencing batch reactor (SBR)-based STPs, spiked with PS microbeads, showed > 98% removal at favorable conditions.

Optimization of nitrogen removal and microbial mechanism of a hydrogen-based membrane biofilm reactor

ABSTRACT The hydrogen-based membrane biofilm reactor (H2-MBfR) is an emerging biological nitrogen removal technology characterized by high efficiency, energy-saving capability, and environmental friendliness. The technology achieves denitrification and denitrogenation of microorganisms by passing hydrogen as an electron donor from inside to outside through the hollow fibre membrane module, and eventually the hydrogen reachs the biofilm attached to the surface of the fibre membrane. H2-MBfR has obtained favourable outcomes in the treatment of secondary biochemical effluent and low concentration nitrogen polluted water source. The experiment was optimized by s single-factor testing and response surface methodology-based optimization (RSM), and the optimal operational conditions were obtained as follows: an influent flow rate of 2 mL/min, hydrogen pressure of 0.04 MPa, and influent nitrate concentration of 24.29 mg/L. Under these conditions, a high nitrate removal rate of 98.25% was achieved. In addition, Proteobacteria and Bacteroidetes were the dominant bacteria in all stages, and the genus Hydrogenophaga was sufficiently enriched, occurring at 13.0%–49.0% throughout the reactor operation. Furthermore, the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway for nitrate reduction and inorganic carbon utilization by microorganisms in the H2-MBfR was explored through comparison with the KEGG database. The results provided a mechanistic explanation for the denitrification and carbon sequestration capacity of the H2-MBfR.

Development of an antimicrobial and antifouling PES membrane with ZnO/poly(hexamethylene biguanide) nanocomposites incorporation

Although polyethersulfone (PES) membranes are extensively utilized in water and wastewater treatment, they typically encounter serious bio/organic fouling problems. In this work, an antimicrobial and antifouling PES membrane was developed through incorporating novel ZnO/PHMB (zinc oxide/ polyhexamethylene biguanide hydrochloride) nanocomposites on the surface of a commercial PES membrane, with PDA (polydopamine) serving as an intermediate connection layer. XPS, along with synchrotron-based XRF and ATR-FTIR results confirmed the successful synthesis of the ZnO/PHMB nanocomposites and ZnO/PHMB membranes. The ZnO/PHMB nanocomposites exhibited an impressive antimicrobial rate of 99.99 % with a minimal amount of PHMB addition (wtZnO:wtPHMB = 1:0.01). The concentration of the ZnO/PHMB nanocomposites had the most significant impact on the antimicrobial performance of the ZnO/PHMB membrane. The 600ZP membrane (i.e., the PES membrane modified with 600 mg/L ZnO/PHMB nanocomposites) emerged as the optimal choice, as evidenced by its commendable antimicrobial performance (92.80 %), water flux (249.02 LMH), RB (Rose Bengal sodium salt) rejection (93.96 %), and cost-benefit considerations. Compared to the pristine PES membrane, the 600ZP membrane showed 5.32 %, 15.76 %, and 7.62 % increased hydrophilicity, water flux, and RB rejection rate, respectively. Additionally, the 600ZP membrane possessed a bactericidal rate of 92.80 % and a flux recovery rate of 89.24 % after three cycles of SA (sodium alginate) filtration, indicating enhanced antimicrobial and antifouling capacities. The 600ZP membrane exhibited a remarkable 91.05 % higher water flux following prolonged (72 h) treatment of secondary effluent, compared to the PES membrane. Attribute to the increased hydrophilicity, outstanding antimicrobial activity, as well as excellent stability and durability, the as-prepared ZnO/PHMB membrane shows great potential for wastewater treatment.

Effect of natural increase of pH and microalgae cyclical re-cultivation on biomass production and polishing of municipal secondary effluent

A constant source of nutrient pollution that causes eutrophication is municipal wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) secondary effluent. This paper investigates the natural increase of pH, nutrient removal and biomass production from a cyclical re-cultivation system designed to favor the adaptation of microalgae consortia to WWTP secondary effluent. An outdoor experiment was performed with the microalgae consortia MC-10 under 3 sequential batch cycles. The natural pH increase (range 9–10) in the WWTP secondary effluent was established as an operation parameter because it certainly influenced microalgae biomass production (by maintenance and bioavailability of C and P), water treatment and pathogen removal. The increase of pH (9.7, 9.8 and 9.9) during the culture cycles of MC-10 probably generated conditions for fecal bacterial removal below detectable values (i.e., < 2 MPN/100 mL). The treatment of WWTP secondary effluent after batch cycles (cycles 1 to 3) using MC-10 indicated improvements in biomass productivity (66 to 167%) and a great potential for the reduction of total alkalinity (13.1 to 50.3%), NO3–-N (30.9 to 53.6%), PO43–- P (90.4 to 93.0%) and electrical conductivity (EC) (8.5 to 18.1%). Additionally, the harvested biomass showed a high mineral concentration (46.5%) suggesting its potential use as a bio-fertilizer.

Electrogeneration of H2O2 through carbon-based ink on Al foam for electro-Fenton treatment of micropollutants in water

In the present work, the catalytic efficiency of inks based on different carbon materials, namely activated carbon (AC), carbon graphite (CG), and carbon black (CB) was investigated for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Additionally, we explored the feasibility of using this ink as a coating for an Aluminum foam (Alfoam) cathode in an electrochemical cell. The goal was to utilize this setup to produce hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) in the electro-Fenton (EF) process, targeting for treating water contaminated with contaminants of emerging concern (CECs).Among the materials investigated, all of them exhibited the ability to facilitate the ORR. However, AC proved to be the most suitable material due to its optimal balance between physical and electrocatalytic properties, thus enabling the formation of H2O2. When the different inks were applied to the surface of aluminum foam, it was observed that only the ink based on carbon black CB achieved a homogeneous distribution with the same ink quantity. As a result, it was observed that the Alfoam/CB electrode exhibited the highest H2O2 generation capacity, producing 45.6 mg L-1, followed by electro-generation of 5.1 mg L-1 using Alfoam/AC and 11 mg L-1 using Alfoam/CG. Furthermore, the application of Alfoam/CB in EF processes allowed for the almost complete degradation of 15 emerging contaminants of concern (CECs) present in secondary effluent. The innovative outcome of this study positions the developed technology as a promising and effective alternative for the treatment of water contaminated with CECs, demonstrating significant potential for industrial-scale application.

Effect mechanism of micron-scale zero-valent iron enhanced pyrite-driven denitrification biofilter for nitrogen and phosphorus removal.

This study aims to explore the effect mechanism of micron-scale zero-valent iron (mZVI) to improve nitrogen and phosphorus removal in a pyrite (FeS2)-driven denitrification biofilter (DNBF) for the secondary effluent treatment. Two similar DNBFs (DNBF-A with FeS2 as fillers and DNBF-B with the mixture mZVI and FeS2 as carrier) were developed. The results showed that NO3--N, total nitrogen (TN) and PO43--P removal efficiencies were up to 91.64%, 67.44% and 80.26% in DNBF-B, which were obviously higher than those of DNBF-A (with NO3--N, TN and PO43--P removal efficiencies of 38.39%, 44.89% and 53.02%, respectively). Kinetic analysis of both PO43--P and NO3--N showed an increase in the rate constant (K) for DNBF-B compared to DNBF-A. The addition of mZVI not only improved the electron transport system activity (ETSA), but also achieved system Fe(II)/Fe(III) redox cycle in DNBF-B. In addition, the high-throughput sequencing analysis indicated that the addition of mZVI could obviously stimulate the enrichment of functional bacteria, such as Thiobacillus (11.99%), Mesotoga (7.50%), JGI-0000079D21 (6.37%), norank_f__Bacteroidetes_vadinHA17 (6.19%), Aquimonas (5.93%) and Arenimonas (3.97%). These genus played the important role in nitrogen and phosphorus removal in DNBF-B. Addition mZVI in the FeS2-driven denitrification biofilter is highly promising for TN and TP removal during secondary effluent treatment.

Micron zero-valent iron chitosan hydrogel balls boosts nitrate removal in constructed wetlands for secondary effluent treatment

Reducing nitrate in the secondary effluent from municipal wastewater treatment plants can prevent eutrophication, which can be achieved by constructed wetlands. Zero-valent iron has been used as electron donors for nitrate removal in constructed wetlands to deal with the low carbon-to-nitrogen ratio (C/N) problem, but the effects are often limited by passivation. In this study, micron zero-valent iron chitosan hydrogel balls were prepared as part of the substrate. The total nitrogen removal efficiency maintained at 85 %-96 % in 70 days. The chelating ability of chitosan could reduce the formation of iron oxides on the surface of iron particles and microbial cells, thus eliminating the passivation. Denitrification microorganisms were enriched and the expressions of denitrification genes were increased. The study provides new understandings of further improving the nitrate removal efficiency of constructed wetlands under low C/N and efficient use of iron materials.

Tertiary treatment using ultrafiltration in an existing sewage treatment plant for industrial reuse: a modelling approach using artificial neural network with uncertainty estimation

Abstract Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation of Maharashtra state, India, unified a tertiary treatment plant (TTP) of 20 × 103 m3/day capacity with ultrafiltration technology in an existing Koparkhairane sewage treatment plant (STP) for producing effluent quality usable for industrial purposes. As prior art, an artificial neural network-genetic algorithm (ANN-GA) along with uncertainty estimation using prediction interval is employed to model secondary treated effluent (STE) flow rate (QT) and other quality parameters such as biochemical oxygen demand, chemical oxygen demand, and total suspended solids (TSS) to conclude the reliability of the range in which the input available to TTP. ANN-GA model provides a coefficient of determination above 0.90 for all STE parameters modelled other than TSS. Inferring that a good quantity and quality of 20 × 103 m3/day STP treated water is currently available, where a decreasing trend of QT is also noticed and highlighted. Further, the Wilcoxon signed-rank test on the quality parameter of effluent TTP for industrial reuse standard infers TSS shows infringement during the initial period but started adhering to standards over time. The research delineates at the outset of exploring water reuse policy in India, emphasizing Maharashtra state, modelling STE using ANN-GA and performance evaluation of TTP.

A low-cost and sustainable solution for nitrate removal from secondary effluent: Macroporous ion exchange resin treatment

Macroporous ion exchange resin has excellent selectivity to nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and partially soluble refractory organic compounds contained in the secondary effluent of wastewater treatment plants (WWTP). In this study, macroporous ion exchange resins were chosen as an alternative to single biochemical nitrogen removal processes. Various conditions were examined to optimize adsorption performance, and the adsorption mechanism was explored through isotherm fitting, thermodynamic parameter calculation, and kinetic analysis. The experiment demonstrated that the resin exhibited strong selectivity for nitrate (NO3−) and achieved an equilibrium adsorption amount of 9.8924 mg/g and an equilibrium adsorption time of 60 min at 25 °C. The resin denitrification pilot plant demonstrated stable operation for two months and achieved COD<20 mg/L, TN < 1.5 mg/L, and NH4+-N<0.5 mg/L. The removal rates of COD, TP, NH4+-N, NO3−-N, and TN were 41.65%, 42.96%, 55.37%, 91.8%, and 90.81%, respectively. After the resin was regenerated, the removal rates of NO3−-N, TN and the regeneration recovery rate were above 90%. Through cost analysis, the treatment cost of the pilot plant is only 0.104 $/m3. This study presents a practical, low-cost, and efficient treatment method for the deep treatment of secondary effluent from WWTP in practical engineering, providing new ideas and theoretical guidance.

Covalent codeposition modification of reverse osmosis membranes with Noria and zwitterionic copolymers for antifouling in reclaimed water production

Reverse osmosis (RO) has been recognized as a promising technology to treat municipal wastewater. However, membrane fouling is still an important hurdle in the RO membrane operation. The present work demonstrates the facile and high-effective fabrication of a robust antifouling RO membrane by the codeposition of Noria with zwitterionic copolymers. This modified coating is irreversibly bound to the membrane during typical membrane operational conditions. Compared with the pristine membrane, the modified membrane (that is, the TFC-Co-8 membrane) possesses improved hydrophilicity, reduced roughness, and lower negative charge. Our results illustrate that the TFC-Co-8 membrane displays an excellent antifouling property with milder flux decline and higher flux recovery during protein and alginate filtrations. Additionally, the TFC-Co-8 membrane is applied in the treatment of actual secondary effluent and also exhibits a superior antifouling property, which is consistent with the results of the simulated solution. This work provides a reference for the design of antifouling RO membrane in reclaimed water production.

Synthetic wastewater prepared from readily available materials: Characteristics and economics

The wastewater used for experimental research is typically collected from a wastewater treatment plant or prepared as a synthetic solution in the lab. These options represent transportation and cost challenges, respectively, particularly for experiments requiring large volumes of wastewater. Here, we describe a method for creating inexpensive synthetic wastewater from readily available household products. The base solution, synthesized by soaking dog food pellets for 24 hours and straining the solution, had average nutrient values of 9.7 mg/L ammonia as N, 12.2 mg/L nitrate as N, 227 mg/L total nitrogen, and 4870 mg/L chemical oxygen demand (COD). Degradation tests demonstrated that soluble COD was biodegradable. The base solution was then used to prepare synthetic wastewater that met the requirements for two experimental applications; (1) anaerobic treatment of primary effluent and (2) land-application treatment of secondary effluent. Cost analysis indicated that the single-ingredient synthetic wastewater cost 92% less to produce than synthetic wastewater recipes that used laboratory chemicals, and reduced preparation time. These results demonstrated that use of commercial products can simplify the wastewater synthesis process and reduce experimental costs for large-volume research applications while still maintaining consistent wastewater characterization.

Novel insight into secondary effluent quality improvement and ultrafiltration fouling mitigation by UV/peracetic acid pretreatment

Ultrafiltration (UF) technology is widely used in the treatment for deep purification of municipal secondary effluent, however, the membrane fouling and low removal of N, P, and organic matter during actual operation have been the main bottlenecks limiting its wide-spread application. To address the above problems, this study employed peracetic acid (PAA) and UV/PAA to evaluate the effects of PAA-based pre-oxidation on ultrafiltration membrane fouling and secondary effluent water quality. The results demonstrated that the activated PAA pre-oxidation could prominently enhance the hydrophilicity of effluent organic matter, effectively destroy the high molecular weight organic matter and mineralize the low molecular weight organic matter. PAA and its metabolites, as well as the by-products of EfOM, increased the C/P ratio in water samples from 118 to 563 and the C/N ratio from 0.86 to 8.53. After UV/20 mg/L PAA pretreatment, the reversible and irreversible membrane fouling resistance significantly decreased by 55.97 % and 65.67 %, respectively. Moreover, the extended Derjaguin–Landau–Verwey–Overbeek (XDLVO) theory showed lower adhere potential of the foulants to the membrane surface. In general, UV/PAA as ultrafiltration pretreatment has a huge potential for secondary effluent treatment for membrane fouling mitigation and water quality improvement.

Using Fe(II)/Fe(VI) activated peracetic acid as pretreatment of ultrafiltration for secondary effluent treatment: Water quality improvement and membrane fouling mitigation

Ultrafiltration (UF) is a technology commonly used to treat secondary effluents in wastewater reuse; however, it faces two main challenges: 1) membrane fouling and 2) inadequate nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and organic micropollutants (OMPs) removal. To address these two issues, in this study, we applied peracetic acid (PAA), Fe(VI)/PAA, and Fe(II)/PAA as UF pretreatments. The results showed that the most effective pretreatment was Fe(II)/200 μM PAA, which reduced the total fouling resistance by 90.2%. In comparison, the reduction was only 29.7% with 200 μM PAA alone and 64.3% with Fe(VI)/200 μM PAA. Fe(II)/200 μM PAA could effectively remove fluorescent components and hydrophobic organics in effluent organic matter (EfOM), and enhance the repulsive force between foulants and membrane (according to XDLVO analysis), and consequently, mitigate pore blocking and delay cake layer formation. Regarding pollutant removal, Fe(II)/200 μM PAA effectively degraded OMPs (>85%) and improved P removal by 58.2% via in-situ Fe(Ⅲ) co-precipitation. The quencher and probe experiments indicated that FeIVO2+, •OH, and CH3C(O)OO•/CH3C(O)O• all played important roles in micropollutant degradation with Fe(II)/PAA. Interestingly, PAA oxidation produced highly biodegradable products such as acetic acid, which significantly elevated the BOD5 level and increased the BOD5/total nitrogen (BOD5/TN) ratio from 0.8 to 8.6, benefiting N removal with subsequent denitrification. Overall, the Fe(II)/PAA process exhibits great potential as a UF pretreatment to control membrane fouling and improve water quality during secondary effluent treatment.

Factors driving PPCPs uptake by crops after wastewater irrigation and human health implications

Currently, water scarcity affects more than three billion people. Nevertheless, the volume of treated wastewater discharged into the environment is estimated to exceed 100 m3 per inhabitant/year. These water resources are regularly used in agriculture worldwide to overcome water shortages. Such a practice, however, entails the uptake of waterborne pollutants, such as pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs), by crops and their further access to the food web, constituting an additional route of human exposure to PPCPs, with potential health outcomes.In this study, the occurrence of 56 PPCPs in tomatoes, lettuce, and carrot, together with soil and irrigation water, was evaluated using a QuEChERS-based methodology for extraction and LC-MS/MS for analysis. The influence of the selected cultivation conditions on the plant uptake levels of PPCPs was assessed. Two irrigation water qualities (secondary and tertiary treatment effluents), two soil compositions (sandy and clayey), two irrigation systems (dripping and sprinkling), and three crop types (lettuce, tomato, and carrot) were tested. Carrots showed the highest load of PPCPs (7787 ng/g dw), followed by tomatoes (1692 ng/g dw) and lettuces (1248 ng/g dw). The most translocated PPCPs were norfluoxetine (fluoxetine antidepressant main metabolite) (521 ng/g dw), and the anti-inflammatory diclofenac (360 ng/g dw). Nine PPCPs, are reported to be accumulated in crops for the first time. Water quality was the most important factor for reducing PPCPs' plant uptake. Overall, the best conditions for reducing PPCP uptake by crops were irrigation with reclaimed water by sprinkling in soils with higher clay content. The risk assessment performed revealed that the crops' consumption posed no risk to human health. This study serves as the first comprehensive assessment of the relevance of diverse cultivation factors on PPCPs’ plant uptake under field agricultural practices.
