Refining the OJ 287 2022 impact flare arrival epoch

ABSTRACT The bright blazar OJ 287 routinely parades high brightness bremsstrahlung flares, which are explained as being a result of a secondary supermassive black hole (SMBH) impacting the accretion disc of a more massive primary SMBH in a binary system. The accretion disc is not rigid but rather bends in a calculable way due to the tidal influence of the secondary. Next, we refer to this phenomenon as a variable disc level. We begin by showing that these flares occur at times predicted by a simple analytical formula, based on general relativity inspired modified Kepler equation, which explains impact flares since 1888. The 2022 impact flare, namely flare number 26, is rather peculiar as it breaks the typical pattern of two impact flares per 12-yr cycle. This is the third bremsstrahlung flare of the current cycle that follows the already observed 2015 and 2019 impact flares from OJ 287. It turns out that the arrival epoch of flare number 26 is sensitive to the level of primary SMBH’s accretion disc relative to its mean level in our model. We incorporate these tidally induced changes in the level of the accretion disc to infer that the thermal flare should have occurred during 2022 July–August, when it was not possible to observe it from the Earth. Thereafter, we explore possible observational evidence for certain pre-flare activity by employing spectral and polarimetric data from our campaigns in 2004/05 and 2021/22. We point out theoretical and observational implications of two observed mini-flares during 2022 January–February.

Unusual Hard X-Ray Flares Caught in NICER Monitoring of the Binary Supermassive Black Hole Candidate AT2019cuk/Tick Tock/SDSS J1430+2303

The nuclear transient AT2019cuk/Tick Tock/SDSS J1430+2303 has been suggested to harbor a supermassive black hole (SMBH) binary near coalescence. We report results from high-cadence NICER X-ray monitoring with multiple visits per day from 2022 January to August, as well as continued optical monitoring during the same time period. We find no evidence of periodic/quasiperiodic modulation in the X-ray, UV, or optical bands; however, we do observe exotic hard X-ray variability that is unusual for typical active galactic nuclei (AGN). The most striking feature of the NICER light curve is repetitive hard (2–4 keV) X-ray flares that result in distinctly harder X-ray spectra compared to the nonflaring data. In its nonflaring state, AT2019cuk looks like a relatively standard AGN, but it presents the first case of day-long, hard X-ray flares in a changing-look AGN. We consider a few different models for the driving mechanism of these hard X-ray flares, including (1) corona/jet variability driven by increased magnetic activity, (2) variable obscuration, and (3) self-lensing from the potential secondary SMBH. We prefer the variable corona model, as the obscuration model requires rather contrived timescales and the self-lensing model is difficult to reconcile with a lack of clear periodicity in the flares. These findings illustrate how important high-cadence X-ray monitoring is to our understanding of the rapid variability of the X-ray corona and necessitate further high-cadence, multiwavelength monitoring of changing-look AGN like AT2019cuk to probe the corona-jet connection.

Modelling the accretion and feedback of supermassive black hole binaries in gas-rich galaxy mergers

ABSTRACTWe introduce a new model for the accretion and feedback of supermassive black hole (SMBH) binaries to the ketju code, which enables us to resolve the evolution of SMBH binaries down to separations of tens of Schwarzschild radii in gas-rich galaxy mergers. Our subgrid binary accretion model extends the widely used Bondi–Hoyle–Lyttleton accretion into the binary phase and incorporates preferential mass accretion on to the secondary SMBH, which is motivated by results from small-scale hydrodynamical circumbinary disc simulations. We perform idealized gas-rich disc galaxy merger simulations using pure thermal or pure kinetic active galactic nuclei (AGNs) feedback. Our binary accretion model provides more physically motivated SMBH mass ratios, which are one of the key parameters for computing gravitational wave (GW) induced recoil velocities. The merger time-scales of our simulated SMBH binaries are in the range tmerge ∼ 10–400 Myr. Prograde in-plane equal-mass galaxy mergers lead to the shortest merger time-scales, as they experience the strongest starbursts, with the ensuing high stellar density resulting in a rapid SMBH coalescence. Compared to the thermal AGN feedback, the kinetic AGN feedback predicts longer merger time-scales and results in more core-like stellar profiles, as it is more effective in removing gas from the galaxy centre and quenching star formation. This suggests that the AGN feedback implementation plays a critical role in modelling SMBH coalescences. Our model will be useful for improving the modelling of SMBH mergers in gas-rich galaxies, the prime targets for the upcoming LISA GW observatory.

MOMO. VI. Multifrequency Radio Variability of the Blazar OJ 287 from 2015 to 2022, Absence of Predicted 2021 Precursor-flare Activity, and a New Binary Interpretation of the 2016/2017 Outburst

Based on our dedicated Swift monitoring program, MOMO, OJ 287 is one of the best-monitored blazars in the X-ray–UV–optical regime. Here, we report results from our accompanying, dense, multifrequency (1.4–44 GHz) radio monitoring of OJ 287 between 2015 and 2022 covering a broad range of activity states. Fermi γ-ray observations were added. We characterize the radio flux and spectral variability in detail, including discrete correlation function and other variability analyses, and discuss its connection with the multiwavelength emission. Deep fades of the radio and optical–UV fluxes are found to occur every 1–2 yr. Further, it is shown that a precursor flare of thermal bremsstrahlung predicted by one of the binary supermassive black hole (SMBH) models of OJ 287 was absent. We then focus on the nature of the extraordinary, nonthermal, 2016/2017 outburst that we initially discovered with Swift. We interpret it as the latest of the famous optical double-peaked outbursts of OJ 287, favoring binary scenarios that do not require a highly precessing secondary SMBH.

Multiwavelength astrophysics of the blazar OJ 287 and the project MOMO

AbstractWe are carrying out the densest and longest multiyear, multiwavelength monitoring project of OJ 287 ever done. The project MOMO (Multiwavelength Observations and Modeling of OJ 287) covers wavelengths from the radio to the high‐energy regime. A few selected observations are simultaneous with those of the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT). MOMO aims at understanding disk‐jet physics and at testing predictions of the binary black hole scenario of OJ 287. Here, we present a discussion of extreme outburst and minima states in context, and then focus on the recent flux and spectral evolution between 2021 and May 2022, including an ongoing bright radio flare. Further, we show that there is no evidence for precursor flare activity in our optical–UV–X‐ray light curves that would be associated with any secondary supermassive black hole (SMBH) disk impact and that was predicted to start as thermal flare on December 23, 2021.

Unraveling the Innermost Jet Structure of OJ 287 with the First GMVA + ALMA Observations

We present the first very long baseline interferometric (VLBI) observations of the blazar OJ 287 carried out jointly with the Global Millimeter VLBI Array (GMVA) and the phased Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) at 3.5 mm on 2017 April 2. The participation of phased ALMA has not only improved the GMVA north–south resolution by a factor of ∼3, but has also enabled fringe detections with signal-to-noise ratios up to 300 at baselines longer than 2 Gλ. The high sensitivity has motivated us to image the data with newly developed regularized maximum likelihood imaging methods, revealing the innermost jet structure with unprecedentedly high angular resolution. Our images reveal a compact and twisted jet extending along the northwest direction, with two bends within the inner 200 μas, resembling a precessing jet in projection. The component at the southeastern end shows a compact morphology and high brightness temperature, and is identified as the VLBI core. An extended jet feature that lies at ∼200 μas northwest of the core shows a conical shape, in both total and linearly polarized intensity, and a bimodal distribution of the linear polarization electric vector position angle. We discuss the nature of this feature by comparing our observations with models and simulations of oblique and recollimation shocks with various magnetic field configurations. Our high-fidelity images also enabled us to search for possible jet features from the secondary supermassive black hole (SMBH) and test the SMBH binary hypothesis proposed for this source.

Toward Astrometric Constraints on a Supermassive Black Hole Binary in the Early-type Galaxy NGC 4472

The merger of two galaxies, each hosting a supermassive black hole (SMBH) of mass 106 M ⊙ or more, could yield a bound SMBH binary. For the early-type galaxy NGC 4472, we study how astrometry with a next-generation Very Large Array could be used to monitor the reflex motion of the primary SMBH of mass M pri, as it is tugged on by the secondary SMBH of mass . Casting the orbit of the putative SMBH binary in terms of its period P, semimajor axis a bin, and mass ratio , we find the following: (1) Orbits with fiducial periods of P = 4 yr and 40 yr could be spatially resolved and monitored. (2) For a 95% accuracy of 2 μas per monitoring epoch, subparsec values of a bin could be accessed over a range of mass ratios notionally encompassing major and minor galaxy mergers. (3) If no reflex motion is detected for M pri after 1 (10) yr of monitoring, an SMBH binary with period P = 4 (40) yr and mass ratio q > 0.01 (0.003) could be excluded. This would suggest no present-day evidence for a past major merger like that recently simulated, where scouring by a q ∼ 1 SMBH binary formed a stellar core with kinematic traits like those of NGC 4472. (4) Astrometric monitoring could independently check the upper limits on q from searches for continuous gravitational waves from NGC 4472.

MOMO – V. Effelsberg, Swift, and Fermi study of the blazar and supermassive binary black hole candidate OJ 287 in a period of high activity

ABSTRACT We report results from our ongoing project MOMO (Multiwavelength Observations and Modelling of OJ 287). In this latest publication of a sequence, we combine our Swift UVOT–XRT and Effelsberg radio data (2.6–44 GHz) between 2019 and 2022.04 with public SMA data and gamma-ray data from the Fermi satellite. The observational epoch covers OJ 287 in a high state of activity from radio to X-rays. The epoch also covers two major events predicted by the binary supermassive black hole (SMBH) model of OJ 287. Spectral and timing analyses clearly establish: a new UV–optical minimum state in 2021 December at an epoch where the secondary SMBH is predicted to cross the disc surrounding the primary SMBH; an overall low level of gamma-ray activity in comparison to pre-2017 epochs; the presence of a remarkable, long-lasting UV–optical flare event of intermediate amplitude in 2020–2021; a high level of activity in the radio band with multiple flares; and particularly a bright, ongoing radio flare peaking in 2021 November that may be associated with a gamma-ray flare, the strongest in 6 yr. Several explanations for the UV–optical minimum state are explored, including the possibility that a secondary SMBH launches a temporary jet, but the observations are best explained by variability associated with the main jet.

Galactic merger implications for eccentric nuclear discs: a mechanism for disc alignment

ABSTRACT The nucleus of our nearest, large galactic neighbour, M31, contains an eccentric nuclear disc – a disc of stars on eccentric, apsidally aligned orbits around a supermassive black hole (SMBH). Previous studies of eccentric nuclear discs considered only an isolated disc, and did not study their dynamics under galaxy mergers (particularly a perturbing SMBH). Here, we present the first study of how eccentric discs are affected by a galactic merger. We perform N-body simulations to study the disc under a range of different possible SMBH initial conditions. A second SMBH in the disc always disrupts it, but more distant SMBHs can shut off differential precession and stabilize the disc. This results in a more aligned disc, nearly uniform eccentricity profile, and suppression of tidal disruption events compared to the isolated disc. We also discuss implications of our work for the presence of a secondary SMBH in M31.

A self-lensing supermassive binary black hole at radio frequencies: the story of Spikey continues

ABSTRACT The quasar J1918+4937 was recently suggested to harbour a milliparsec-separation binary supermassive black hole (SMBH), based upon modelling the narrow spike in its high-cadence Kepler optical light curve. Known binary SMBHs are extremely rare, and the tight constraints on the physical and geometric parameters of this object are unique. The high-resolution radio images of J1918+4937 obtained with very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) indicate a rich one-sided jet structure extending to 80 mas. Here we analyse simultaneously made sensitive 1.7- and 5-GHz archive VLBI images as well as snapshot 8.4/8.7-GHz VLBI images of J1918+4937, and show that the appearance of the wiggled jet is consistent with the binary scenario. We develop a jet structural model that handles eccentric orbits. By applying this model to the measured VLBI component positions, we constrain the inclination of the radio jet, as well as the spin angle of the jet emitter SMBH. We find the jet morphological model is consistent with the optical and radio data, and that the secondary SMBH is most likely the jetted one in the system. Furthermore, the decade-long 15-GHz radio flux density monitoring data available for J1918+4937 are compatible with a gradual overall decrease in the total flux density caused by a slow secular change of the jet inclination due to the spin–orbit precession. J1918+4937 could be an efficient high-energy neutrino source if the horizon of the secondary SMBH is rapidly rotating.

On Post-starburst Galaxies Dominating Tidal Disruption Events

Abstract A starburst induced by a galaxy merger may create a relatively thin central stellar disk at radius ≤100 pc. We calculate the rate of tidal disruption events (TDEs) by the inspiraling secondary supermassive black hole (SMBH) through the disk. With a small enough stellar velocity dispersion ( ) in the disk, it is shown that 105–106 TDEs of solar-type main-sequence stars per post-starburst galaxy (PSB) can be produced to explain their dominance in producing observed TDEs. Although the time it takes to bring the secondary SMBH to the disk apparently varies in the range of ∼0.1–1 Gyr since the starburst, depending on its landing location and subsequently due to dynamical friction with stars exterior to the central stellar disk in question, the vast majority of TDEs by the secondary SMBH in any individual PSB occur within a time span shorter than ∼30 Myr. Five unique testable predictions of this model are suggested.

High cadence, linear, and circular polarization monitoring of OJ 287

Aims. We present a multifrequency, dense radio monitoring program of the blazar OJ 287 using the 100-m Effelsberg radio telescope. The program aims to test different binary supermassive black hole (SMBH) scenarios and studying the physical conditions in the central region of this bright blazar. Here, we analyze the evolution in total flux density, linear and circular polarization as a means to study the OJ 287 jet structure and its magnetic field geometry. Methods. We used a recently developed, high-precision data analysis methodology to recover all four Stokes parameters. We measured the total flux density of OJ 287 at nine bands from 2.64 GHz to 43 GHz, the linear polarization parameters at four bands between 2.64 GHz and 10.45 GHz, and the circular polarization at two bands, 4.85 GHz and 8.35 GHz. The mean cadence of our measurements is ten days. Results. Between December 2015 and January 2017 (MJD 57370–57785), OJ 287 showed flaring activity and complex linear and circular polarization behavior. The radio electric vector position angle (EVPA) showed a large clockwise (CW) rotation by ∼340° with a mean rate of −1.04°/day. Based on concurrent very long baseline interferometric (VLBI) polarization data at 15 GHz and 43 GHz, the rotation seems to originate within the jet core at 43 GHz (projected angular size ≤0.15 mas or 0.67 pc at the redshift of the source). Moreover, optical polarization data show a similar monotonic CW rotation with a rate of about −1.1°/day which is superposed with shorter and faster rotations that exhibit rates of about 7.8°/day, mainly in the CW sense. Conclusions. The flux density and polarization variability of the single dish, VLBI and optical data is consistent with a polarized emission component propagating on a helical trajectory within a bent jet. We constrained the helix arc length to 0.26 pc and radius to ≤0.04 pc as well as the jet bending arc length projected on the plane of the sky to ≤1.9–7.6 pc. A similar bending has been observed also in high angular resolution VLBI images of the OJ 287 jet at its innermost regions. The helical trajectory covers only a part of the jet width, possibly its spine. In addition, our results indicate the presence of a stable polarized emission component. Its EVPA (−10°) is oriented perpendicular to the large scale jet, suggesting dominance of the poloidal magnetic field component. Finally, the EVPA rotation begins simultaneously with an optical flare and hence the two might be physically connected. That optical flare has been suggested to be linked to the interaction of a secondary SMBH with the inner accretion disk or originating in the jet of the primary.

The secular tidal disruption of stars by low-mass Supermassive Black Holes secondaries in galactic nuclei

Stars passing too close to a super massive black hole (SMBH) can produce tidal disruption events (TDEs). Since the resulting stellar debris can produce an electromagnetic flare, TDEs are believed to probe the presence of single SMBHs in galactic nuclei, which otherwise remain dark. In this paper, we show how stars orbiting an IMBH secondary are perturbed by an SMBH primary. We find that the evolution of the stellar orbits are severely affected by the primary SMBH due to secular effects and stars orbiting with high inclinations with respect to the SMBH-IMBH orbital plane end their lives as TDEs due to Kozai-Lidov oscillations, hence illuminating the secondary SMBH/IMBH. Above a critical SMBH mass of $\approx 1.15 \times 10^8$ M$_{\odot}$, no TDE can occur for typical stars in an old stellar population since the Schwarzschild radius exceeds the tidal disruption radius. Consequently, any TDEs due to such massive SMBHs will remain dark. It follows that no TDEs should be observed in galaxies with bulges more massive than $\approx 4.15\times 10^{10}$ M$_{\odot}$, unless a lower-mass secondary SMBH or IMBH is also present. The secular mechanism for producing TDEs considered here therefore offers a useful probe of SMBH-SMBH/IMBH binarity in the most massive galaxies. We further show that the TDE rate can be $\approx 10^{-4}-10^{-3}$ yr$^{-1}$, and that most TDEs occur on $\approx 0.5$ Myr. Finally, we show that stars may be ejected with velocities up to thousands of km s$^{-1}$, which could contribute to the observed population of Galactic hypervelocity stars.

The complex jet- and bar-perturbed kinematics in NGC 3393 as revealed with ALMA and GEMINI–GMOS/IFU

NGC 3393, a nearby Seyfert 2 galaxy with nuclear radio jets, large-scale and nuclear bars, and a posited secondary super massive black hole, provides an interesting laboratory to test the physics of inflows and outflows. Here we present and analyse the molecular gas (ALMA observations of CO J:2-1 emission over a field of view (FOV) of 45\arcsec \times 45\arcsec, at 0\farcs56 (143 pc) spatial and 5 km/s spectral resolution), ionised gas and stars (GEMINI-GMOS/IFU; over a FOV of 4\arcsec \times 5\arcsec, at 0\farcs62 (159 pc) spatial and 23 km/s spectral resolution) in NGC 3393. The ionised gas emission, detected over the complete GEMINI-GMOS FOV, has three identifiable kinematic components. A narrow (\sigma < 115 km/s) component present in the complete FOV, which is consistent with rotation in the galaxy disk. A broad (\sigma > 115 km/s) redshifted component, detected near the NE and SW radio lobes; which we interpret as a radio jet driven outflow. And a broad (\sigma > 115 km/s) blueshifted component that shows high velocities in a region perpendicular to the radio jet axis; we interpret this as an equatorial outflow. The CO J:2-1 emission is detected in spiral arms on 5\arcsec - 20\arcsec scales, and in two disturbed circumnuclear regions. The molecular kinematics in the spiral arms can be explained by rotation. The highly disturbed kinematics of the inner region can be explained by perturbations induced by the nuclear bar and interactions with the large scale bar. We find no evidence for, but cannot strongly rule out, the presence of the posited secondary black hole.

The fate of close encounters between binary stars and binary supermassive black holes

The evolution of main sequence binaries that reside in the Galactic Centre can be heavily influenced by the central supermassive black hole (SMBH). Due to these perturbative effects, the stellar binaries in dense environments are likely to experience mergers, collisions or ejections through secular and/or non-secular interactions. More direct interactions with the central SMBH are thought to produce hypervelocity stars (HVSs) and tidal disruption events (TDEs). In this paper, we use N-body simulations to study the dynamics of stellar binaries orbiting a central SMBH primary with an outer SMBH secondary orbiting this inner triple. The effects of the secondary SMBH on the event rates of HVSs, TDEs and stellar mergers are investigated, as a function of the SMBH-SMBH binary mass ratio. Our numerical experiments reveal that, relative to the isolated SMBH case, the TDE and HVS rates are enhanced for, respectively, the smallest and largest mass ratio SMBH-SMBH binaries. This suggests that the observed event rates of TDEs and HVSs have the potential to serve as a diagnostic of the mass ratio of a central SMBH-SMBH binary. The presence of a secondary SMBH also allows for the creation of hypervelocity binaries. Observations of these systems could thus constrain the presence of a secondary SMBH in the Galactic Centre.

A candidate dual AGN in a double-peaked emission-line galaxy with precessing radio jets

We present high resolution radio continuum observations with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array at 6, 8.5, 11.5 and 15 GHz of the double-peaked emission-line galaxy 2MASXJ12032061+1319316. The radio emission has a prominent S-shaped morphology with highly symmetric radio jets that extend over a distance of $\sim1.5^{\prime\prime}$ (1.74~kpc) on either side of the core of size $\sim0.1^{\prime\prime}$(116~pc). The radio jets have a helical structure resembling the precessing jets in the galaxy NGC~326 which has confirmed dual active galactic nuclei (AGN). The nuclear bulge velocity dispersion gives an upper limit of $(1.56\pm$0.26$)\times$10$^8$~M$_{\odot}$ for the total mass of nuclear black hole(s). We present a simple model of precessing jets in 2MASXJ1203 and find that the precession timescale is around 10$^5$ years: this matches the source lifetime estimate via spectral aging. We find that the expected super massive black hole (SMBH) separation corresponding to this timescale is 0.02 pc. We used the double peaked emission lines in 2MASXJ1203 to determine an orbital speed for a dual AGN system and the associated jet precession timescale, which turns out to be more than the Hubble time, making it unfeasible. We conclude that the S-shaped radio jets are due to jet precession caused either by a binary/dual SMBH system, a single SMBH with a tilted accretion disk or a dual AGN system where a close pass of the secondary SMBH in the past has given rise to jet precession.

Implications of the eccentric Kozai–Lidov mechanism for stars surrounding supermassive black hole binaries

An enhanced rate of stellar tidal disruption events (TDEs) may be an important characteristic of supermassive black hole (SMBH) binaries at close separations. Here we study the evolution of the distribution of stars around a SMBH binary due to the eccentric Kozai-Lidov (EKL) mechanism, including octupole effects and apsidal precession caused by the stellar mass distribution and general relativity. We identify a region around one of the SMBHs in the binary where the EKL mechanism drives stars to high eccentricities, which ultimately causes the stars to either scatter off the second SMBH or get disrupted. For SMBH masses 10^7 Msun and 10^8 Msun, the TDE rate can reach 10^{-2} yr and deplete a region of the stellar cusp around the secondary SMBH in ~0.5 Myr. As a result, the final geometry of the stellar distribution between 0.01 and 0.1 pc around the secondary SMBH is a torus. These effects may be even more prominent in nuclear stellar clusters hosting a supermassive and an intermediate mass black hole.

Production of EMRIs in supermassive black hole binaries

We consider the formation of extreme mass-ratio inspirals (EMRIs) sourced from a stellar cusp centred on a primary supermassive black hole (SMBH) and perturbed by an inspiraling less massive secondary SMBH. The problem is approached numerically, assuming the stars are non-interacting over these short time-scales and performing an ensemble of restricted three-body integrations. From these simulations, we see that not only can EMRIs be produced during this process, but the dynamics are also quite rich. In particular, most of the EMRIs are produced through a process akin to the Kozai–Lidov mechanism, but with strong effects due to the non-Keplerian stellar potential, general relativity and non-secular oscillations in the angular momentum on the orbital time-scale of the binary SMBH system.

MULTIPLE TIDAL DISRUPTIONS AS AN INDICATOR OF BINARY SUPERMASSIVE BLACK HOLE SYSTEMS

We find that the majority of systems hosting multiple tidal disruptions are likely to contain hard binary SMBH systems, and also show that the rates of these repeated events are high enough to be detected by LSST over its lifetime. Therefore, these multiple tidal disruption events provide a novel method to identify super-massive black hole (SMBH) binary systems with parsec to sub-parsec separations. The rates of tidal disruptions are investigated using simulations of non-interacting stars initially orbiting a primary SMBH and the potential of the model stellar cusp. The stars are then evolved forward in time and perturbed by a secondary SMBH inspiraling from the edge of the cusp to its stalling radius. We find with conservative magnitude estimates that the next generation transient survey LSST should detect multiple tidal disruptions in approximately 3 galaxies over 5 years of observation, though less conservative estimates could increase this rate by an order of magnitude.
