Two-Photon Absorption Strengths of Small Molecules: Reference CC3 Values and Benchmarks.

We present a large dataset of highly accurate two-photon transition strengths (δTPA) determined for standard small molecules. Our reference values have been calculated using the quadratic response implementation of the third-order coupled cluster method including iterative triples (Q-CC3). The aug-cc-pVTZ atomic basis set is used for molecules with up to five non-hydrogen atoms, while larger molecules are assessed with aug-cc-pVDZ; the differences due to the basis sets are discussed. This dataset, encompassing 82 singlet transitions of various characters (Rydberg, valence, and double excitations), enables a comprehensive benchmark of smaller basis sets and alternative wavefunction methods when Q-CC3 calculations become beyond reach as well as time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) approaches. The evaluated wavefunction methods include quadratic response and equation-of-motion CCSD approximations, Q-CC2, and second-order algebraic diagrammatic construction in its intermediate state representation (I-ADC2). In the TD-DFT framework, a set of five commonly used exchange-correlation functionals are evaluted. This extensive analysis provides a quantitative assessment of these methods, revealing how different system sizes, response intensities, and types of transitions affect their performances.

Ab initio electronic absorption spectra of para-nitroaniline in different solvents: Intramolecular charge transfer effects.

Intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) effects of para-nitroaniline (pNA) in eight solvents (cyclohexane, toluene, acetic acid, dichloroethane, acetone, acetonitrile, dimethylsulfoxide, and water) are investigated extensively. The second-order algebraic diagrammatic construction, ADC(2), ab initio wave function is employed with the COSMO implicit and discrete multiscale solvation methods. We found a decreasing amine group torsion angle with increased solvent polarity and a linear correlation between the polarity and ADC(2) transition energies. The first absorption band involves π → π* transitions with ICT from the amine and the benzene ring to the nitro group, increased by 4%-11% for different solvation models of water compared to the vacuum. A second band of pNA is characterized for the first time. This band is primarily a local excitation on the nitro group, including some ICT from the amine group to the benzene ring that decreases with the solvent polarity. For cyclohexane, the COSMO implicit solvent model shows the best agreement with the experiment, while the explicit model has the best agreement for water.

Photophysical properties of donor (D)-acceptor (A)-donor (D) diketopyrrolopyrrole (A) systems as donors for applications to organic electronic devices.

Fourteen substituted diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) molecules in a donor (D)-acceptor (DPP)-donor (D) arrangement were designed. We employed density functional theory, time-dependent DFT, DFT-MRCI and the ab initio wave function second-order algebraic diagrammatic construction (ADC(2)) methods to investigate theoretically these systems. The examined aromatic substituents have one, two, or three hetero- and non-hetero rings. We comprehensively investigated their optical, electronic, and charge transport properties to evaluate potential applications in organic electronic devices. We found that the donor substituents based on one, two, or three aromatic rings bonded to the DPP core can improve the efficiency of an organic solar cell by fine-tuning the highest occupied molecular orbital/lowest unoccupied molecular orbital levels to match acceptors in typical bulk heterojunctions acceptors. Several properties of interest for organic photovoltaic devices were computed. We show that the investigated molecules are promising for applications as donor materials when combined with typical acceptors in bulk heterojunctions because they have appreciable energy conversion efficiencies resulting from their low ionization potentials and high electron affinities. This scenario allows a more effective charge separation and reduces the recombination rates. A comprehensive charge transfer analysis shows that D-A (DDP)-D systems have significant intramolecular charge transfer, further confirming their promise as candidates for donor materials in solar cells. The significant photophysical properties of DPP derivatives, including the high fluorescence emission, also allow these materials to be used in organic light-emitting diodes.

Efficient State-Specific Natural Orbital Based Equation of Motion Coupled Cluster Method for Core-Ionization Energies: Theory, Implementation, and Benchmark.

We have implemented a reduced-cost partial triples correction scheme to the equation of motion coupled cluster method for core-ionization energy based on state-specific natural orbitals. The second-order Algebraic Diagrammatic Construction (ADC) method is used to generate the state-specific natural orbital, which provides quicker convergence of the core-IP value with respect to the size of the virtual space than that observed in standard MP2-based natural orbitals. The error due to truncation of the virtual orbital can be reduced by using a perturbative correction. The accuracy of the method can be controlled by a single threshold, and there is a black box to use. The inclusion of the partial triples correction in the natural orbital based EOM-CCSD method greatly improves the agreement of the results with the experiment. The efficiency of the present implementation is demonstrated by calculating the core-ionization energy of a molecule containing 60 atoms and more than 2000 basis functions.

Absorption spectra of p-nitroaniline derivatives: charge transfer effects and the role of substituents.

Push-pull compounds are model systems and have numerous applications. By changing their substituents, properties are modified and new molecules for different applications can be designed. The work investigates the gas-phase electronic absorption spectra of 15 derivatives of push-pull para-nitroaniline (pNA). This molecule has applications in pharmaceuticals, azo dyes, corrosion inhibitors, and optoelectronics. Both electron-donor and electron-withdrawing groups were investigated. Employing machine learning-derived Hammett's constants σm, σm0, σR, and σI, correlations between substituents and electronic properties were obtained. Overall, the σm0 constants presented the best correlation with HOMO and LUMO energies, whereas the σR constants best agreed with the transition energy of the first band and HOMO-LUMO energy gap. Electron-donors, which have lower σR values, redshift the absorption spectrum and reduce the HOMO-LUMO energy gap. Conversely, electron-withdrawing groups (higher σR's) blueshift the spectrum and increase the energy gap. The second band maximum energies, studied here for the first time, showed no correlation with σ but tended to increase with σ. A comprehensive charge transfer (CT) analysis of the main transition of all systems was also carried out. We found that donors (lower σ's) slightly enhance the CT character of the unsubstituted pNA, whereas acceptors (higher σ's) decrease it, leading to increased local excitations within the aromatic ring. The overall CT variation is not large, except for pNA-SO2H, which considerably decreases the total CT value. We found that the strong electron donors pNA-OH, pNA-OCH3, and pNA-NH2, which have the smallest HOMO-LUMO energy gaps and lowest σ's, have potential for optoelectronic applications. The results show that none of the studied molecules is fluorescent in the gas phase. However, pNA-NH2 and pNA-COOH in cyclohexane and water reveal fluorescence upon solvation. We investigated theoretically employing the second-order algebraic diagrammatic construction (ADC(2)) ab initio wave function and time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) the gas-phase electronic absorption spectra of 15 derivatives of p-nitroaniline (pNA). The investigated substituents include both electron-donor (C6H5, CCH, CH3, NH2, OCH3, and OH,) and electron-withdrawing (Br, CCl3, CF3, Cl, CN, COOH, F, NO2, and SO2H) substituents.

Efficient and Parallel Implementation of Real and Complex Response Functions Employing the Second-Order Algebraic-Diagrammatic Construction Scheme for the Polarization Propagator.

We present the implementation of an efficient matrix-folded formalism for the evaluation of complex response functions and the calculation of transition properties at the level of the second-order algebraic-diagrammatic construction (ADC(2)) scheme. The underlying algorithms, in combination with the adopted hybrid MPI/OpenMP parallelization strategy, enabled calculations of the UV/vis spectra of a guanine oligomer series ranging up to 1032 contracted basis functions, thereby utilizing vast computational resources from up to 32,768 CPU cores. Further analysis of the convergence behavior of the involved iterative subspace algorithms revealed the superiority of a frequency-separated treatment of response equations even for a large spectral window, including 101 frequencies. We demonstrate the applicability to general quantum mechanical operators by the first reported electronic circular dichroism spectrum calculated with a complex polarization propagator approach at the ADC(2) level of theory.

Merocyanines form bacteriorhodopsins with strongly bathochromic absorption maxima

There is a need to shift the absorbance of biomolecules to the optical transparency window of tissue for applications in optogenetics and photo-pharmacology. There are a few strategies to achieve the so-called red shift of the absorption maxima. Herein, a series of 11 merocyanine dyes were synthesized and employed as chromophores in place of retinal in bacteriorhodopsin (bR) to achieve a bathochromic shift of the absorption maxima relative to bR’s λmaxa\\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \\usepackage{amsmath} \\usepackage{wasysym} \\usepackage{amsfonts} \\usepackage{amssymb} \\usepackage{amsbsy} \\usepackage{mathrsfs} \\usepackage{upgreek} \\setlength{\\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \\begin{document}$${\\lambda }_{\\mathrm{max}}^{a}$$\\end{document} of 568 nm. Assembly with the apoprotein bacterioopsin (bO) led to stable, covalently bound chromoproteins with strongly bathochromic absorbance bands, except for three compounds. Maximal red shifts were observed for molecules 9, 2, and 8 in bR where the λmaxa\\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \\usepackage{amsmath} \\usepackage{wasysym} \\usepackage{amsfonts} \\usepackage{amssymb} \\usepackage{amsbsy} \\usepackage{mathrsfs} \\usepackage{upgreek} \\setlength{\\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \\begin{document}$${\\lambda }_{\\mathrm{max}}^{a}$$\\end{document} was 766, 755, and 736 nm, respectively. While these three merocyanines have different end groups, they share a similar structural feature, namely, a methyl group which is located at the retinal equivalent position 13 of the polyene chain. The absorption and fluorescence data are also presented for the retinal derivatives in their aldehyde, Schiff base (SB), and protonated SB (PSB) forms in solution. According to their hemicyanine character, the PSBs and their analogue bRs exhibited fluorescence quantum yields (Φf) several orders of magnitude greater than native bR (Φf 0.02 to 0.18 versus 1.5 × 10–5 in bR) while also exhibiting much smaller Stokes shifts than bR (400 to 1000 cm−1 versus 4030 cm−1 in bR). The experimental results are complemented by quantum chemical calculations where excellent agreement between the experimental λmaxa\\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \\usepackage{amsmath} \\usepackage{wasysym} \\usepackage{amsfonts} \\usepackage{amssymb} \\usepackage{amsbsy} \\usepackage{mathrsfs} \\usepackage{upgreek} \\setlength{\\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \\begin{document}$${\\lambda }_{\\mathrm{max}}^{a}$$\\end{document} and the calculated λmaxa\\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \\usepackage{amsmath} \\usepackage{wasysym} \\usepackage{amsfonts} \\usepackage{amssymb} \\usepackage{amsbsy} \\usepackage{mathrsfs} \\usepackage{upgreek} \\setlength{\\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \\begin{document}$${\\lambda }_{\\mathrm{max}}^{a}$$\\end{document} was achieved with the second-order algebraic-diagrammatic construction [ADC(2)] method. In addition, quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics (QM/MM) calculations were employed to shed light on the origin of the bathochromic shift of merocyanine 2 in bR compared with native bR.Graphical abstract

A comprehensive analysis of charge transfer effects on donor-pyrene (bridge)-acceptor systems using different substituents.

The alternant polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon pyrene has photophysical properties that can be tuned with different donor and acceptor substituents. Recently, a D (donor)-Pyrene (bridge)-A (acceptor) system, DPA, with the electron donor N,N-dimethylaniline (DMA), and the electron acceptor trifluoromethylphenyl (TFM), was investigated by means of time-resolved spectroscopic measurements (J. Phys. Chem. Lett. 2021, 12, 2226-2231). DPA shows great promise for potential applications in organic electronic devices. In this work, we used the ab initio second-order algebraic diagrammatic construction method ADC(2) to investigate the excited-state properties of a series of analogous DPA systems, including the originally synthesized DPAs. The additionally investigated substituents were amino, fluorine, and methoxy as donors and nitrile and nitro groups as acceptors. The focus of this work was on characterizing the lowest excited singlet states regarding charge transfer (CT) and local excitation (LE) characters. For the DMA-pyrene-TFM system, the ADC(2) calculations show two initial electronic states relevant for interpreting the photodynamics. The bright S1 state is locally excited within the pyrene moiety, and an S2 state is localized ~0.5 eV above S1 and characterized as a donor to pyrene CT state. HOMO and LUMO energies were employed to assess the efficiency of the DPA compounds for organic photovoltaics (OPVs). HOMO-LUMO and optical gaps were used to estimate power conversion and light-harvesting efficiencies for practical applications in organic solar cells. Considering the systems using smaller D/A substituents, compounds with the strong acceptor NO2 substituent group show enhanced CT and promising properties for use in OPVs. Some of the other compounds with small substituents are also found to be competitive in this regard.

A Hammett's analysis of the substituent effect in functionalized diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) systems: Optoelectronic properties and intramolecular charge transfer effects.

Diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) systems have promising applications in different organic electronic devices. In this work, we investigated the effect of 20 different substituent groups on the optoelectronic properties of DPP-based derivatives as the donor ( )-material in an organic photovoltaic (OPV) device. For this purpose, we employed Hammett's theory (HT), which quantifies the electron-donating or -withdrawing properties of a given substituent group. Machine learning (ML)-based , , , , , , , and Hammett's constants previously determined were used. Mono- (DPP-X1 ) and di-functionalized (DPP-X2 ) DPPs, where X is a substituent group, were investigated using density functional theory (DFT), time-dependent DFT (TDDFT), and ab initio methods. Several properties were computed using CAM-B3LYP and the second-order algebraic diagrammatic construction, ADC(2), an ab initio wave function method, including the adiabatic ionization potential ( ), the electron affinity ( ), the HOMO-LUMO gaps ( ), and the maximum absorption wavelengths ( ), the first excited state transition 1 S0 → 1 S1 energies ( ) (the optical gap), and exciton binding energies. From the optoelectronic properties and employing typical acceptor systems, the power conversion efficiency ( ), open-circuit voltage ( ), and fill factor ( ) were predicted for a DPP-based OPV device. These photovoltaic properties were also correlated with the machine learning (ML)-based Hammett's constants. Overall, good correlations between all properties and the different types of constants were obtained, except for the constants, which are related to inductive effects. This scenario suggests that resonance is the main factor controlling electron donation and withdrawal effects. We found that substituent groups with large values can produce higher photovoltaic efficiencies. It was also found that electron-withdrawing groups (EWGs) reduced and considerably compared to the unsubstituted DPP-H. Moreover, for every decrease (increase) in the values of a given optoelectronic property of DPP-X1 systems, a more significant decrease (increase) in the same values was observed for the DPP-X2 , thus showing that the addition of the second substituent results in a more extensive influence on all electronic properties. For the exciton binding energies, an unsupervised machine learning algorithm identified groups of substituents characterized by average values (centroids) of Hammett's constants that can drive the search for new DDP-derived materials. Our work presents a promising approach by applying HT on molecular engineering DPP-based molecules and other conjugated molecules for applications on organic optoelectronic devices.

Vertical Ionization Potentials and Electron Affinities at the Double-Hybrid Density Functional Level.

The double-hybrid (DH) time-dependent density functional theory is extended to vertical ionization potentials (VIPs) and electron affinities (VEAs). Utilizing the density fitting approximation, efficient implementations are presented for the genuine DH ansatz relying on the perturbative second-order correction, while an iterative analogue is also elaborated using our second-order algebraic-diagrammatic construction [ADC(2)]-based DH approach. The favorable computational requirements of the present schemes are discussed in detail. The performance of the recently proposed spin-component-scaled and spin-opposite-scaled (SOS) range-separated (RS) and long-range corrected (LC) DH functionals is comprehensively assessed, while popular hybrid and global DH approaches are also discussed. For the benchmark calculations, up-to-date test sets are selected with high-level coupled-cluster references. Our results show that the ADC(2)-based SOS-RS-PBE-P86 approach is the most accurate and robust functional. This method consistently outperforms the excellent SOS-ADC(2) approach for VIPs, although the results are somewhat less satisfactory for VEAs. Among the genuine DH functionals, the SOS-ωPBEPP86 approach is also recommended for describing ionization processes, but its performance is even less reliable for electron-attached states. In addition, surprisingly good results are attained by the LC hybrid ωB97X-D functional, where the corresponding occupied (unoccupied) orbital energies are retrieved as VIPs (VEAs) within the present formalism.

Tuning UV Pump X-ray Probe Spectroscopy on the Nitrogen K Edge Reveals the Radiationless Relaxation of Pyrazine: Ab Initio Simulations Using the Quasiclassical Doorway-Window Approximation.

Transient absorption UV pump X-ray probe spectroscopy has been established as a versatile technique for the exploration of ultrafast photoinduced dynamics in valence-excited states. In this work, an ab initio theoretical framework for the simulation of time-resolved UV pump X-ray probe spectra is presented. The method is based on the description of the radiation-matter interaction in the classical doorway-window approximation and a surface-hopping algorithm for the nonadiabatic nuclear excited-state dynamics. Using the second-order algebraic-diagrammatic construction scheme for excited states, UV pump X-ray probe signals were simulated for the carbon and nitrogen K edges of pyrazine, assuming a duration of 5 fs of the UV pump and X-ray probe pulses. It is predicted that spectra measured at the nitrogen K edge carry much richer information about the ultrafast nonadiabatic dynamics in the valence-excited states of pyrazine than those measured at the carbon K edge.

Reduced-Cost Second-Order Algebraic-Diagrammatic Construction Method for Core Excitations

Our reduced-cost scheme [J. Chem. Phys. 2018, 148, 094111] based on the frozen virtual natural orbital and natural auxiliary function approaches is extended to core excitations. The efficiency of the approximation is presented for the second-order algebraic-diagrammatic construction [ADC(2)] method invoking the core-valence separation (CVS) and density fitting approaches. The errors introduced by the present scheme are comprehensively analyzed for more than 200 excitation energies and 80 oscillator strengths, including C, N, and O K-edge excitations, as well as 1s → π* and Rydberg transitions. Our results show that significant savings can be gained in computational requirements at the expense of a moderate error. That is, the mean absolute error for the excitation energies, being lower than 0.20 eV, is an order of magnitude smaller than the intrinsic error of CVS-ADC(2), while the mean relative error for the oscillator strengths is between 0.06 and 0.08, which is still acceptable. As significant differences for different types of excitations cannot be observed, the robustness of the approximation is also demonstrated. The improvements in the computational requirements are measured for extended molecules. In this case, an overall 7-fold speedup is obtained in the wall-clock times, while dramatic reductions in the memory requirements are also achieved. In addition, it is also proved that the new approach enables us to perform CVS-ADC(2) calculations within reasonable runtime for systems of 100 atoms using reliable basis sets.

Scaled opposite-spin atomic-orbital based algebraic diagrammatic construction scheme for the polarization propagator with asymptotic linear-scaling effort: Theory and implementation.

A novel local approach for the quantum-chemical computation of excited states is presented, where the concept of the atomic-orbital formulation of the second-order Møller-Plesset energy expression is extended to the second-order algebraic diagrammatic construction scheme by virtue of the Laplace transform. The scaled opposite-spin second-order algebraic diagrammatic construction method with Cholesky decomposed densities and density-fitting, or CDD-DF-SOS-ADC(2) for short, exploits the sparsity of the two-electron repulsion integrals, the atomic ground-state density matrix, and the atomic transition density matrix to drastically reduce the computational effort. By using a local density-fitting approximation, it is shown that asymptotically linear scaling can be achieved for linear carboxylic acids. For electron-dense systems, sub-cubic scaling can be achieved if the excitation is local, and hence the transition density is sparse. Furthermore, the memory footprint and accuracy of the CDD-DF-SOS-ADC(2) method are explored in detail.

The Multistate Quantum Monte Carlo Algebraic Diagrammatic Construction Method.

A multistate formulation of the recently developed quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) algebraic diagrammatic construction (ADC) method, QMCADC, is presented. QMCADC solves the Hermitian eigenvalue problem of the second-order ADC scheme for the polarization propagator stochastically by combining ADC schemes with projector quantum Monte Carlo (PQMC). It allows for massively parallel distributed computing and exploits the sparsity of the effective ADC matrix, thereby relaxing memory and processing requirements of ADC methods significantly. Here, the theory and implementation of the multistate variant of QMCADC are described, and our first proof-of-principle calculations for various molecular systems are shown. Indeed, multistate QMCADC enables sampling of an arbitrary number of low-lying excited states and can reproduce their vertical excitation energies with a marginal controllable error. The performance of multistate QMCADC is examined in terms of state-wise and overall accuracy as well as with respect to the balance in the treatments of excited states relatively to each other. The results are very promising as they show bias and imbalances among excited states to diminish as the number of sampling points increases. Furthermore, the impact of the quality of trial wave functions on the vertical excitation energies is investigated. A black-box approach for the generation of high quality trial wave functions internally is given.

Solving response expressions in the ADC/ISR framework.

We present an implementation for the calculation of molecular response properties using the algebraic-diagrammatic construction (ADC)/intermediate state representation approach. For the second-order ADC model [ADC(2)], a memory-efficient ansatz avoiding the storage of double excitation amplitudes is investigated. We compare the performance of different numerical algorithms for the solution of the underlying response equations for ADC(2) and show that our approach also strongly improves the convergence behavior for the investigated algorithms compared with the standard implementation. All routines are implemented in an open-source Python library.

Double-Hybrid Density Functional Theory for Core Excitations: Theory and Benchmark Calculations.

The double-hybrid (DH) time-dependent density functional theory is extended to core excitations. Two different DH formalisms are presented utilizing the core-valence separation (CVS) approximation. First, a CVS-DH variant is introduced relying on the genuine perturbative second-order correction, while an iterative analogue is also presented using our second-order algebraic-diagrammatic construction [ADC(2)]-based DH ansatz. The performance of the new approaches is tested for the most popular DH functionals using the recently proposed XABOOM [J. Chem. Theory Comput.2021, 17, 1618] benchmark set. In order to make a careful comparison, the accuracy and precision of the methods are also inspected. Our results show that the genuine approaches are highly competitive with the more advanced CVS-ADC(2)-based methods if only excitation energies are required. In contrast, as expected, significant differences are observed in oscillator strengths; however, the precision is acceptable for the genuine functionals as well. Concerning the performance of the CVS-DH approaches, the PBE0-2/CVS-ADC(2) functional is superior, while its spin-opposite-scaled variant is also recommended as a cost-effective alternative. For these approaches, significant improvements are realized in the error measures compared with the popular CVS-ADC(2) method.

Building on the strengths of a double-hybrid density functional for excitation energies and inverted singlet-triplet energy gaps.

It is demonstrated that a double hybrid density functional approximation, ωB88PTPSS, that incorporates equipartition of density functional theory and the non-local correlation, however with a meta-generalized gradient approximation correlation functional, as well as with the range-separated exchange of ωB2PLYP, provides accurate excitation energies for conventional systems, as well as correct prescription of negative singlet-triplet gaps for non-conventional systems with inverted gaps, without any necessity for parametric scaling of the same-spin and opposite-spin non-local correlation energies. Examined over "safe" excitations of the QUESTDB set, ωB88PTPSS performs quite well for open-shell systems, correctly and fairly accurately [relative to equation-of-motion coupled-cluster singles and doubles (EOM-CCSD) reference] predicts negative gaps for 50 systems with inverted singlet-triplet gaps, and is one of the leading performers for intramolecular charge-transfer excitations and achieves near-second-order approximate coupled cluster (CC2) and second-order algebraic diagrammatic construction quality for the Q1 and Q2 subsets. Subsequently, we tested ωB88PTPSS on two sets of real-life examples from recent computational chemistry literature-the low energy bands of chlorophyll a (Chl a) and a set of thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) systems. For Chl a, ωB88PTPSS qualitatively and quantitatively achieves DLPNO-STEOM-CCSD-level performance and provides excellent agreement with experiment. For TADF systems, ωB88PTPSS agrees quite well with spin-component-scaled CC2 (SCS-CC2) excitation energies, as well as experimental values, for the gaps between the S1 and T1 excited states.

On the Cooperative Origin of Solvent-Enhanced Symmetry-Breaking Charge Transfer in a Covalently Bound Tetracene Dimer Leading to Singlet Fission.

Singlet fission in covalently bound acene dimers in solution is driven by the interplay of excitonic and singlet correlated triplet 1(TT) states with intermediate charge-transfer states, a process which depends sensitively on the solvent environment. We use high-level electronic structure methods to explore this singlet fission process in a linked tetracene dimer, with emphasis on the symmetry-breaking mechanism for the charge-transfer (CT) states induced by low-frequency antisymmetric vibrations and polar/polarizable solvents. A combination of the second-order algebraic diagrammatic construction (ADC(2)) and density functional theory/multireference configuration interaction (DFT/MRCI) methods are employed, along with a state-specific conductor-like screening model (COSMO) solvation model in the former case. This work quantifies, for the first time, an earlier mechanistic proposal [Alvertis et al., J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2019, 141, 17558] according to which solvent-induced symmetry breaking leads to a high-energy CT state which interacts with the correlated triplet state, resulting in singlet fission. An approximate assessment of the nonadiabatic interactions between the different electronic states underscores that the CT states are essential in facilitating the transition from the bright excitonic state to the 1(TT) state leading to singlet fission. We show that several types of symmetry-breaking inter- and intra-fragment vibrations play a crucial role in a concerted mechanism with the solvent environment and with the symmetric inter-fragment torsion, which tunes the admixture of excitonic and CT states. This offers a new perspective on how solvent-induced symmetry-breaking CT can be understood and how it cooperates with intramolecular mechanisms in singlet fission.

Performance of Multilevel Methods for Excited States.

The performance of multilevel quantum chemical approaches, which utilize an atom-based system partitioning scheme to model various electronic excited states, is studied. The considered techniques include the mechanical-embedding (ME) of “our own N-layered integrated molecular orbital and molecular mechanics” (ONIOM) method, the point charge embedding (PCE), the electronic-embedding (EE) of ONIOM, the frozen density-embedding (FDE), the projector-based embedding (PbE), and our local domain-based correlation method. For the investigated multilevel approaches, the second-order algebraic-diagrammatic construction [ADC(2)] approach was utilized as the high-level method, which was embedded in either Hartree–Fock or a density functional environment. The XH-27 test set of Zech et al. [J. Chem. Theory Comput., 2018, 14, 402829906111] was used for the assessment, where organic dyes interact with several solvent molecules. With the selection of the chromophores as active subsystems, we conclude that the most reliable approach is local domain-based ADC(2) [L-ADC(2)], and the least robust schemes are ONIOM-ME and ONIOM-EE. The PbE, FDE, and PCE techniques often approach the accuracy of the L-ADC(2) scheme, but their precision is far behind. The results suggest that a more conservative subsystem selection algorithm or the inclusion of subsystem charge-transfers is required for the atom-based cost-efficient methods to produce high-accuracy excitation energies.

Ab initio investigation of substituent effects on the excited electronic states of flavylium cation analogues of anthocyanin pigments

Anthocyanins are particularly noteworthy natural plant pigments that are responsible for the red, purple and blue color of many fruits, vegetables and flowers. Dietary anthocyanins have potential health benefits, but their color loss due to pH-dependent chemistry limits widespread application as coloring agents in food and consumer products. The ability to predict the color of synthetic analogues of natural pigments is crucial to the rational development of new bioinspired dyes and pigments with tailored colors and properties with lower potential for environmental and health concerns than those of conventional synthetic pigments. In this work, we employ the ab initio second-order algebraic diagrammatic construction, ADC(2), level of theory to calculate the absorption spectra of 26 synthetic flavylium cation analogues of anthocyanins. In general, the theoretical absorption spectra compare favorably with the corresponding experimental absorption spectra in an aqueous solution. The excitation energies, the charge transfer character, and the oscillator strengths of the electronic transitions provide insight into the effects of the type and position of the substituents on the excited singlet and triplet states of these compounds. The results show that the theoretical framework employed constitutes a reliable tool for obtaining a deeper understanding of the properties of bioinspired synthetic analogues of anthocyanin pigments.
