EDUKASI MASYARAKAT SEBAGAI UPAYA MITIGASI ABRASI PANTAI DI DESA JUANGA KABUPATEN PULAU MOROTAI PROVINSI MALUKU UTARA

Juanga Village, South Morotai District, Morotai Island Regency, is one of the areas that is very vulnerable to coastal erosion, this is due to the high sea waves that often occur. Community service activities aim to educate the local community about the importance of planting mangroves as an effort to mitigate the coastal erosion disaster that occurred in Juanga Village. Community service starts from identifying problems that occur, then conducting outreach to the community and carrying out mangrove planting actions in designated areas involving KKNT students at Hein Namotemo University. The result of Community Service is that the community can be educated to continue to maintain natural balance by planting coastal vegetation that can withstand the rate of abrasion, one of which is mangroves because mangrove vegetation is important vegetation for the sustainability of marine biota and as a coast guard from abrasion. It is hoped that with this activity the people of Juanga Village can increase their knowledge and carry out sustainable planting.

Performance Characteristics of Newly Developed Real-Time Wave Measurement Buoy Using the Variometric Approach

Accurate measurement of ocean wave parameters is critical for applications including ocean modeling, coastal engineering, and disaster management. This article introduces a novel global navigation satellite system (GNSS) drifting buoy for surface wave measurements that addresses the challenges of performing real-time, high-precision measurements and realizing cost-effective large-scale deployment. Unlike traditional approaches, this buoy uses the kinematic extension of the variometric approach for displacement analysis stand-alone engine (Kin-VADASE) velocity measurement method, thus eliminating the need for additional high-precision measurement units and an expensive complement of satellite orbital products. Through testing in the South China Sea and Laoshan Bay, the results showed good consistency in significant wave height and main wave direction between the novel buoy and a Datawell DWR-G4, even under mild wind and wave conditions. However, wave mean period disparities were observed partially because of sampling frequency differences. To validate this idea, we used Joint North Sea Wave Project (Jonswap) spectral waves as input signals, the bias characteristics of the mean periods of the spectral calculations were compared under conditions of identical input signals and gradient-distributed wind speeds. Results showed an average difference of 0.28 s between the sampling frequencies of 1.28 Hz and 5 Hz. The consequence that high-frequency signals have considerable effects on the mean wave period calculations indicates the necessity of the buoy’s high-frequency operation mode. This GNSS drifting buoy offers a cost-effective, globally deployable solution for ocean wave measurement. Its potential for large-scale networked ocean wave observation makes it a valuable oceanic research and monitoring instrument.

Validation of vibration reduction in barge-type floating offshore wind turbines with oscillating water columns through experimental and numerical analyses

Floating offshore wind turbines (FOWTs) are highly susceptible to vibrations caused by wind and sea wave oscillations, necessitating effective vibration reduction strategies to ensure stability and optimal performance. This study investigates the effectiveness of a barge-type FOWT integrated with oscillating water columns (OWCs) in reducing oscillations, particularly in rotational modes. A hybrid FOWT-OWCs system was designed, and its vibration mitigation capabilities were assessed through both numerical simulations and experimental tests. The numerical approach focused on controlling airflow in the OWCs, while the experimental tests validated these results under similar conditions. A strong agreement between the simulations and experiments was observed, particularly in reducing platform pitch oscillations, even under irregular wave conditions. The open OWC-based platform outperformed the closed design, reducing pitch angle oscillations from 17.51° to 14.38° for waves with a 10-s dominant frequency. Benchmark tests confirmed this trend, with the open moonpool-based platform achieving a reduction from 18.41° to 12.23°. These findings demonstrate the potential of OWCs to improve the stability and performance of FOWTs, with experimental validation providing confidence in the numerical predictions.

Linear transverse flux generator for wave energy conversion: design optimization and analysis

Abstract The electric power industry impacts each state’s economy significantly, driven by increasing electricity consumption that necessitates expanding power plants and finding alternative energy sources. Among alternative energy sources, ocean and sea wave energy converters can be distinguished as a separate class. Wave energy converters transform wave energy into mechanical and then electrical energy. The purpose of the study is to analyze and optimize the magnetic system of a transverse flux machine (TFM) linear generator and to determine the influence of the distance between the stator cores on the efficiency of the generator. This research included conducting 3D modeling and analysis to identify this rational distance. The methods for investigating the magnetic system and calculating the magnetic field pattern are divided into analytical and numerical. Thanks to advanced software for solving such tasks, numerical calculation methods based on the finite element method play a decisive role. Meanwhile, analytical calculations of the magnetic circuit are performed using Kirchhoff’s second law for preliminary analysis. The article discusses a two-phase linear TFM generator with a U-shaped core and permanent magnets. The results of numerical modeling show that the distance between the stator cores should have a specific size and requires detailed selection when designing the magnetic system in each particular case. In the design studied, it was calculated that 6 mm between the stator cores increases the machine’s performance. 3D modeling is necessary for accurate analysis, considering the axial magnetic flux to minimize stray fields and their mutual demagnetization. Future research will explore an E-shaped core TFM design.

Evaluation of Norm-Constrained Capon Method on Improving Doppler Peak Localization of Antenna-Arrayed High-Frequency Coastal Radar

Abstract Antenna-arrayed high-frequency coastal radar is widely used to monitor the ocean and obtain metocean parameters such as sea surface current, sea wave height, and surface wind. However, the accuracy of these parameters can be significantly influenced by the spectral width and Doppler velocity of the sea echo signals across azimuthal directions, and insufficient spectrum resolution increases uncertainties in the estimates of spectral width and Doppler velocity. To address this, we demonstrate an alternative approach to beamforming by utilizing the norm-constrained Capon (NC-Capon) method to enhance the Doppler spectral resolution and improve the localization accuracy of the spectral peaks. The efficacy of the NC-Capon method is exemplified through an application to a coastal radar dataset collected from 16 receiving channels, operated at a central frequency of 27.75 MHz. A comparative investigation of the NC-Capon beamforming method with the conventional Fourier beamforming method showed that the widths of the spectral peaks at different range cells and azimuthal angles are noticeably improved at lower signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) conditions. Given this, the NC-Capon beamforming method exhibits more robustness to noise and could effectively enhance the concentration of the radar sea echo signals in the Doppler frequency spectrum, thereby reducing the uncertainties of the spectral width and Doppler/radial velocity of the first-order sea echoes. These characteristics are substantiated by the comparative analysis of spectral parameters between the two beamforming methods across various ranges, beamforming angles, and SNR levels. Finally, the computed radial velocities are benchmarked against in situ measurements obtained from a bottom-mounted acoustic current profiler to confirm the validity of the NC-Capon method. Significance Statement We have recently implemented a high-frequency coastal radar equipped with an antenna array to monitor metocean variables within the offshore waters adjacent to Taichung Harbor in Taiwan. Our study focuses on enhancing the Doppler spectral resolution of radar sea echoes by employing an adaptive beamforming technique known as the norm-constrained Capon method. In comparison with the traditional linear beamforming approach, the norm-constrained Capon method demonstrates superior noise resilience. We anticipate that the norm-constrained Capon method holds promise as a dependable approach for refining the accuracy of metocean parameters obtained from antenna-arrayed high-frequency coastal radar systems.

Analysis of the effect of a spring constant of 980 N/m on a wave energy converter device due to heaving

Indonesia is a country with a larger sea area compared to its land area. Therefore, utilizing ocean current or wave energy as a renewable energy source, specifically for generating electricity through Wave Energy Converters (WEC), is a suitable solution. Wave Energy Converters (WEC) work on the basic principle of converting wave energy into linear motion or rotation to drive a generator and then convert it into electricity. The rotation is generated by the up-and-down movement of the pontoon affected by the pontoon's spring constant, which originates from sea waves. Hence, this study aims to analyze the effect of the spring constant on the pontoon due to heaving motion in response to sea waves. The study uses a spring constant of 980 N/m and is conducted with and without a planetary gear system. The highest voltage and current were achieved at a wave height of 0.35 m, producing a voltage of 84.5 V with a current of 8.26 A and a power of 698 Watts for the generator with the planetary system. For the generator without the planetary system, it produced a voltage of 1.73 V with a current of 0.046 A and a power of 0.0795 Watts with a gearbox shaft rotation of 37.32 RPM. The lowest voltage and current were observed at a wave height of 0.15 m, producing a voltage of 39.6 V with a current of 3.58 A and a power of 141.8 Watts for the generator with the planetary system. For the generator without the planetary system, it produced a voltage of 0.53 V with a current of 0.021 A and a power of 0.0111 Watts with a gearbox shaft rotation of 21.62 RPM

Analisis Tinggi Gelombang Laut di Perairan Buton Selatan

Wave height information is very much needed by the people of South Buton, especially those who always use sea transportation, therefore this study aims to analyze the sea wave height in the waters of South Buton, using a quantitative descriptive method. The data collection technique is in the form of documentation. The data analysis technique used is a descriptive statistical analysis technique. Wave height information is very much needed by the community, especially in the shipping sector and fishermen in the waters of South Buton. The results of this study show that the wave height in South Buton varies greatly from January to December from 2019, 2020, and 2021. The months with great potential for high waves are January, February, April, and June with an average wave height of 1-3 meters with a wind speed of 4-15 knots. The lowest and moderate waves occur in March, May, July, August, September, October, November, and December. In these months, the average wave height reaches 0-2.5 meters with a wind speed of 6-15 knots.

Use of sea wave containment techniques

This work makes a comparison between different wave control methods applied in coastal cities, using a small-scale experimental model. The coastal zone of Brazil extends over a considerable area and covers a significant portion of the national territory. It is common to find a variety of constructions on the seashore, from large buildings to small kiosks, many of which are irregular, as they do not follow the proper authorizations from the competent authorities, resulting in environmental, social and economic problems. The coastal environment is dynamic, subject to constant changes in its configuration, since the waves transport and deposit sand, even in small quantities. However, human activity has accelerated this process, although it is natural. Therefore, some methods have been developed to mitigate it.

Modelling Sea-Surface Wave Motion and Ship Response Using Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics and Finite Element Analysis

The response of a ship or other vessel to surface sea waves, including extreme waves, may compromise crew and vessel safety and long-term operational capability. Herein, a novel high-fidelity numerical time-dependent simulation approach is presented using Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) for modelling sea waves coupled with Finite Element Analysis for modelling vessel structural response under wave loading conditions. The results are compared with physical scale model wave tank test results. Good agreement was obtained for heave and pitch motions and vertical bending moments for various forward (head) speeds in regular head waves, heave and pitch motions, and vertical bending moments. High computational demands can be met by the increasing availability of computation power. Ongoing research is outlined. The implications for the design of vessels such as ships and for through-life assessment are discussed.

Frequency stabilization of interconnected diverse power systems with integration of renewable energies and energy storage systems

Recent improvements in renewable energy sources (RESs) and their extensive use in the power industry have created significant issues for their operation, security, and management. Due to the ongoing reduction of power system inertia, maintaining operational frequency at its nominal value and minimizing tie-line power variations constitute essential variables for these improvements. A novel improved frequency stabilization approach based on modified fractional order tilt controller is presented for interconnected diverse power systems with integration of sea wave energy, photovoltaic, wind, energy storage system and biodiesel generator. The fractional order tilt integral double derivative (FOTIDD2) is a novel controller that is developed to address the frequency stabilization problems of a hybrid power structure that is integrated with sources of clean energy and devices for storing energy. A recent optimization algorithm inspired by human behavior called mother optimization algorithm (MOA) is applied to adjust the coefficient of the proposed cascaded controller. The FOTIDD2 controller was compared with other control methods in terms of its transient performance, in order to determine its effectiveness. Further, the mother optimization algorithm results are compared with those of sine cosine algorithm (SCA), fox optimization algorithm (FOA), and grey wolf optimization (GWO). FOTIDD2 controller was found to be more effective than PID controller in respect of reducing overshoot (Osh) by 79.31%, 83.78% and 67.99%, improving time settlement by 33.22%, 29.87%, and 22.45% and reducing undershoot (Ush) by 79.13%, 89.34%, and 86.90% for the (∆F1), (∆F2), and (∆Ptie), respectively.

Nonlinear Hydrophysical Disturbance Infragravity Sea Waves

An analysis of the behavior of the infra-gravitational sea wave revealed nonlinear hydrophysical disturbance of the “rogue waves” type. This disturbance is associated with transformation of sea waves when they move along a coastal marine area of decreasing depth, and with interaction with wind waves. These conclusions are confirmed through analysis of in situ data of the laser interference pressure meter of the hydrosphere in this paper and previous works. Full-scale data were obtained on the shelf of the Sea of Japan. During processing of in situ data, we focused on sea waves with periods ranging from 1 to 10 min.

Multi-Objective Optimization of an Inertial Wave Energy Converter for Multi-Directional Wave Scatter

To advance wave energy devices towards commercialization, it is essential to optimize their design to enhance system performance. Additionally, a thorough economic evaluation is crucial for making these technologies competitive with other renewable energy sources. This study focuses on the techno-economic optimization of an innovative inertial system, the so-called SWINGO system, which is based on gyropendulum technology. SWINGO stands out due to its high energy efficiency in multi-directional installation sites, where wave directions vary significantly throughout the year. The study introduces the application of a multi-objective Evolutionary Algorithm (EA), specifically the Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm II (NSGA-II), to optimize the techno-economic performance of the SWINGO system. This approach aims to identify optimal design parameters that maximize energy extraction while considering economic viability. By deriving a Pareto frontier, a set of optimal devices is selected for further analysis. The performance of the SWINGO system is also compared to an alternative (mono-directional) inertial wave energy converter, the Inertial Sea Wave Energy Converter (ISWEC), to highlight the differences in techno-economic outcomes. Both systems are evaluated at two different installation sites: Pantelleria island and the North Sea in Denmark, with a focus on the directional wave scatter at each location.

Using Machine Learning Techniques to Predict Significant Wave Height Compared with Parametric Methods

Prediction of Sea Wave parameters is an important issue as it is the main design factor for maritime structures. Previously, researchers have used many parametric and numerical approaches, which may be complex in application, take a long time in preparation and sometimes require a bathymetric survey. Recently, soft computing techniques such as Fuzzy Inference Systems, Genetic Algorithm, Machine Learning, etc. have been used to predict sea wave parameters in many marine areas around the world. The ease of application, high accuracy and low computational time of these techniques make them a very good choice in many engineering applications. This study focuses on prediction of significant wave height (Hs) by applying one of the most advanced Machine Learning techniques known as Support Vector Machine (SVM). SVM models are built on the basis of different Kernel functions (Linear, Sigmoid, Radial Basis Function, and Polynomial) which transform the input data into an n-dimensional space where a hyperplane can be generated to partition the data. The results of SVM models are analyzed, evaluated and then compared with the results of commonly used parametric models (P-M, SPM, and CEM). This study shows that the P-M model has reliable and satisfactory results among all parametric models, as its statistical errors are close to those of SVM models (RBF and Polynomial), while all of them are identical in their correlation factors (0.999). Moreover, the parametric models (SPM and CEM) are more accurate in their results than the SVM models (Linear and Sigmoid). Also, this study confirms that the SVM models (RBF and polynomial) are the most accurate models overall, as they have the best generalization error among all models. Finally, it can be concluded that SVM models (RBF and Polynomial) are a promising technique in the sea wave height prediction and can be used as an economic and accurate alternative solution to other prediction models.

Nonlinear analysis of hydrodynamics of a shallow-draft floating wind turbine

AbstractThis study investigates numerically the dynamic responses of the T-Omega Wind novel concept of Floating Offshore Wind Turbine. The turbine is light-weight, has a shallow-draft and a relatively high centre of gravity that allows it to glide over harsh marine environments. The turbine responses are studied under regular wave excitation, considering most probable ranges of discrete sea wave heights and periods representative of real ocean conditions. A multibody virtual model is developed, simplified to a rigid 6 DOF system and experimentally validated in the state-of-art Marine Simulator to define the types of dynamical responses for both “Low” and “High” Sea States. The dynamics of coupled heave and pitch DOFs are evaluated with time histories, phase-plane portraits, Poincaré sections and FFT analyses to conclude that period-1 stable solutions exist for all studied cases of “Low Sea States”, whereas period-2, period-3 and period-4 periodic responses are identified for short wave periods of excitation under “High Sea States” conditions. Simulation results show that regions where period-1 responses exist are highly sensitive to wave height and can widen as the wave amplitude reduces. Finally, the turbines’ nonlinearities generated by the floats’ geometry are observed in this dynamical system, which are identified to be related to variation in float waterplane area and particularly observable for “High Sea States”.

Flow conditions of the Quaternary Deep-water Current reconstructed by sediment waves in the northeastern South China Sea

The South China Sea (SCS) plays a key role in maintaining the circulation in the Pacific and Indian oceans. After entering the northeast South China Sea from the Luzon Strait, the Pacific Deep Water transforms into the Deep-water Current (DWC) and flows westward. The upwelling of the DWC in the SCS could outflow into both the Indian and Pacific oceans. However, when and how this modern circulation was established in the SCS remains unclear. By using seismic reflection data tied to the Ocean Drilling Program wells in the northeastern SCS margin, we have discovered fields of previously unreported sediment waves, of which the onset dates back to ∼2.6 Ma. The sediment wave heights increased from 2.0 to 7.5 m, in association with spatial extent from 630 km2 to 800 km2 between ∼2.6 Ma and ∼ 0.7 Ma. After that, the wave heights and spatial extent reduced to ∼5.5 m and 700 km2, respectively. Considering the location, morphological features and water depth, we propose that these sediment waves were formed by the DWC. The morphological changes of the sediment waves are linked to energy increase and decrease of the DWC within ∼2.6–0.7 Ma and ∼ 0.7–0 Ma, respectively. We interpret the intensification as caused by the narrowing and uplifting of the Luzon Strait that is the sole deep-water gateway of the SCS, and speculate that the post-0.7 Ma weakening was probably related to the reduced Kuroshio Current intrusion due to the middle Pleistocene climate transition. This study proposes a novel model for the evolution of the Quaternary DWC hydrodynamics, fostering our understanding of the paleo-oceanographic links between the SCS and the Pacific Ocean.

The Safety Assessment of Civil Ships against Capsizing Based on the Probability Analysis of Multiple Threshold-crossings of Stochastic Sea Waves

Abstract This paper investigates the impact of threshold-crossing events on ship capsizing through a probabilistic model that predicts random wave heights. Utilizing statistical data from wave height observations, this paper proposes that random waves can be approximated and modeled using the Wiener process, employing autocorrelation function identification and probabilistic statistical verification methods. The threshold-crossing duration of a random wave is just the period of the wave exceeds a given threshold, which can reflect the frequency property of the stochastic sea waves. And the probability distribution of the period can theoretically be determined using the derived probability density function for the time interval between any two adjacent crossings of the Wiener process and a threshold. Based on the above theories, the capsizing probabilities of a civil ship sailing in different wave areas are analyzed under different safety thresholds considering certain ratios of the ship's intrinsic period and wave period. The research results can provide a reference for the anti-overturning design of the ships under the action of random waves.

Nonlinear model predictive dynamic positioning of a remotely operated vehicle with wave disturbance preview

Exploiting preview information of disturbances within robot control is an effective method of handling state perturbations. For underwater vehicles operating in wave-dominated environments, disturbances significantly influence vehicle response and pose a threat to operational safety. In consideration of this, a complete end-to-end control architecture is developed in this work for disturbance rejection during station keeping tasks under wave perturbations, encompassing a nonlinear model predictive controller (NMPC) combined with a deterministic sea wave predictor (DSWP). The wave predictor exploits a continuous measurement of the wave elevation at a location upstream of the vehicle to form a forecast of the temporal evolution of the wave elevation at the vehicle location. The predicted wave parameters are then used to estimate the impending wave-induced hydrodynamic loading, enabling explicit consideration of accurate short-term disturbance forecasts within the controller, ensuring this preview is incorporated in the optimised control sequence. Experimental testing confirms the validity of the wave predictor, producing RMSE as low as 0.017 m. The proposed strategy is then simulated under various wave conditions, optimising control actions inclusive of the preview information. The NMPC outperforms a similar disturbance mitigating feed-forward controller, with average improvements of up to 52% and is found to perform best even with noisy, lower accuracy wave predictions, as well as with communication time delays, providing a high degree of robustness. This demonstrates the potential of the proposed control framework to effectively tackle disturbance mitigation of underwater vehicles subject to large magnitude wave disturbances, expanding the operational envelop of autonomous systems towards forbidding ocean environments.

Observations from opening of a novel geotextile tube connection in field test site

A novel connection configuration for geotextile tubes was proposed, involving the insertion of an auxiliary tube between two main tubes, to ensure proper alignment and leveling when connecting them in a series, thus consolidating individual tubes into a unified structure while maintaining a consistent horizontal level. The novel connection was implemented at a test bed site in the Saemangeum reclaimed area, South Korea, to test exposure to the marine environment including sea waves, sun light exposure and reclamation process. This study presents the observations made upon opening the connection tube after 8 years. The observation shows that the connected geotextile tubes using the proposed auxiliary tube are suitable for use in long-term reclamation projects.

Global assessment of interannual variability in coastal urban areas and ecosystems

Abstract Both seasonal and extreme climate conditions are influenced by long-term natural internal variability. However, in general, long-term hazard variation has not been incorporated into coastal risk assessments. There are coastal regions of high interest, such as urban areas, where a large number of people are exposed to hydrometeorological hazards, and ecosystems, which provide protection, where long-term natural variability should be considered a design factor. In this study, we systematized climate analysis to identify high-interest regions where hazard long-term variability should be considered in risk assessment, disaster reduction, and future climate change adaptation and protection designs. To achieve this goal, we examined the effect of the leading modes of climate variability (Arctic Oscillation, Southern Annular Mode, and El Niño–Southern Oscillation) on the variation in the recurrence of extreme coastal hazard events, including as a first step sea surface temperature, winds, and waves. Neglecting long-term variability could potentially lead to the underperformance of solutions, or even irreversible damage that compromises the conditions of ecosystems for which nature-based solutions are designed.

A ferry route in the Skagerrak optimised via VISIR-2

Abstract Urgent measures are needed for the shipping industry to contribute proportionately to climate change mitigation. To date, the potential of weather routing has not been reproducibly assessed, especially for short sea shipping. We employ the open-source VISIR-2 model on a ferry passage in the Skagerrak (the strait among Norway, Sweden, and Denmark), considering both sea currents and waves. By computing 5,840 least-CO2 optimal routes for 2023, we find promising results, particularly for voyages from Denmark. The savings follow a bi-exponential distribution, with over 10% CO2 emissions savings achievable on about ten days per year. Specifically, the Norwegian coastal current can be harnessed to enhance speed over ground and reduce overall emissions. The vessel performance curve needs to be tailored to specific ships in service, and the optimisation algorithm should be developed to enable just-in-time arrivals.
