Validating cognitive screening in young people with first-episode psychosis: The CogScreen protocol.

Cognitive impairments are a core feature of first-episode psychosis (FEP) and one of the strongest predictors of long-term psychosocial functioning. Cognition should be assessed and treated as part of routine clinical care for FEP. Cognitive screening offers the opportunity to rapidly identify and triage those in most need of cognitive support. However, there are currently no validated screening measures for young people with FEP. CogScreen is a hybrid effectiveness-implementation study which aims to evaluate the classification accuracy (relative to a neuropsychological assessment as a reference standard), test-retest reliability and acceptability of two cognitive screening tools in young people with FEP. Participants will be 350 young people (aged 12-25) attending primary and specialist FEP treatment centres in three large metropolitan cities (Adelaide, Sydney, and Melbourne) in Australia. All participants will complete a cross-sectional assessment over two sessions including two cognitive screening tools (Screen for Cognitive Impairment in Psychiatry and Montreal Cognitive Assessment), a comprehensive neuropsychological assessment battery, psychiatric and neurodevelopmental assessments, and other supplementary clinical measures. To determine the test-retest reliability of the cognitive screening tools, a subset of 120 participants will repeat the screening measures two weeks later. The protocol, rationale, and hypotheses for CogScreen are presented. CogScreen will provide empirical evidence for the validity and reliability of two cognitive screening tools when compared to a comprehensive neuropsychological assessment. The screening measures may later be incorporated into clinical practice to assist with rapid identification and treatment of cognitive deficits commonly experienced by young people with FEP.

Evaluation des Troubles Cognitifs Chez des Patients Tunisiens Atteints de Trouble Bipolaire en Rémission : Étude Cas-Témoins: Assessment of Cognitive Impairment in Tunisian Patients With Bipolar Disorder in Remission: A Case-Control Study

Our aims were to assess cognitive impairment in bipolar patients in remission compared with healthy controls, and to study its connection to clinical and therapeutic factors. This was a case-control study of patients with bipolar disorder (BD) in remission and matched healthy controls. It was carried out at the Hédi Chaker University Hospital in Sfax, Tunisia. The Screen for Cognitive Impairment in Psychiatry (SCIP) scale was used to assess cognitive function in patients and controls. This scale comprises subtests for verbal learning with immediate (VLT-I) and delayed (VLT-D) recall, working memory (WMT), verbal fluency (VFT) and information processing speed (PST). We recruited 61 patients and 40 controls. Compared with controls, patients had significantly lower scores on the overall SCIP scale and on all SCIP subtests (p < 0.001 throughout) with moderate to high effects. In multivariate analysis, the presence of psychotic characteristics correlated with lower scores on the overall SCIP (p = 0.001), VLT-I (p = 0.001) and VLT-D (p = 0.007), WMT (p = 0.002) and PST (p = 0.008). Bipolar II correlated with lower LTV-I scores (p = 0.023). Age of onset and duration of the disorder were negatively correlated with PST scores (p < 10-3 and p = 0.007, respectively). Predominantly manic polarity correlated with lower VFT scores (p = 0.007). Our study showed that bipolar patients in remission presented significantly more marked cognitive impairments, affecting various cognitive domains, than the controls. These cognitive impairments appear to be linked to clinical and therapeutic factors that are themselves considered to be factors of poor prognosis in BD.

#1137 Association between cognitive function, depressive symptoms and quality of life in older patients with severely reduced GFR and kidney failure

Abstract Background and Aims Impaired cognitive function and reduced health-related quality of life (HRQoL) are common in older patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) with severely reduced GFR and kidney failure. Older patients with CKD often regard HRQoL as a health priority, but it is unknown whether cognitive function associates with HRQoL and whether depressive symptoms mediate this association. We therefore aim to examine the association between cognitive function and HRQoL, and explore the mediating role of depressive symptoms. Method Patients aged 65 years and older with an eGFR between 20 and 10 mL/min/1.73 m2 participating in the ongoing DIALysis or not: Outcomes in older kidney patients with GerIatriC Assessment (DIALOGICA) study were included. Cognitive function, depressive symptoms and HRQoL were assessed using the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS-15) and Twelve-Item Short Form Health Survey (SF-12) questionnaire, respectively. The SF-12 yields a Mental Component Summary (MCS) score and Physical Component Summary score (PCS). We created a diagram of the hypothesized direct and indirect pathways between cognition and HRQoL, with depressive symptoms as the purported mediator (Fig. 1). We used cross-sectional multivariable linear regression analyses to examine the association between cognitive function and both mental and physical HRQoL, and multivariable mediation analyses to explore the role of depressive symptoms. Results In total, 403 patients were included with a mean age of 76.5 years, with a standard deviation (SD) of 5.8 and a mean eGFR of 14.5 mL/min/1.73 m2 (SD 3.0). A majority of patients were male (71.5%). Cognitive function associated significantly with mental HRQoL (adjusted β 0.30, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.05; 0.55, p 0.021), but not with physical HRQoL (adjusted β 0.18, 95% CI −0.09; 0.44, p 0.20). The mediation effect of depressive symptoms between cognitive function and MCS remained significant after adjustment (indirect effect 0.15, 95% CI 0.04; 0.26). Thus, lower cognitive function was associated with lower mental HRQoL, which was partly mediated by corresponding increases in depressive symptoms. Conclusion Cognitive function is associated with mental HRQoL, but not with physical HRQoL in older patients with severely reduced GFR and kidney failure. This association is partially mediated by depressive symptoms. These findings underline the importance of screening for cognitive impairment and depressive symptoms in this population and may increase the understanding of what potentially affects HRQoL. As HRQoL is seen as a health priority, further research should explore whether cognitive interventions or treatment of depressive symptoms result in improvement of HRQoL in this population.

Association between electroencephalogram alpha-band oscillations and executive and processing functions in patients with cerebral small vessel diseases.

Electroencephalogram (EEG) alpha-band oscillations may reflect executive and processing function in patients with cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD). We aimed to assess such association and its relationship with CSVD severity, and to identify specific alpha-band parameters and the cut-off values for cognitive screening. We analysed the dispersion of amplitude-frequency characteristics of EEG alpha-band and different alpha-band parameters (PFα , ΔPFα , PPα , NCL) in different brain locations. We also assessed patients' executive and processing functions using verbal fluency test (VFT) and color trails test (CTT), and CSVD severity using total burden and Fazekas scores. 129 patients were recruited in the study. After adjusting for age, gender and education, PFα(F3), PFα(F4) and NCL were significantly associated with VFT-composite performance (p < 0.05). CTT-1 time and error were associated with PFα(F3), PFα(F4), ΔPFα(O1;F3) and CSVD severity (p < 0.05), whereas CTT-2 time was only associated with CSVD severity. Moreover, the correlations between alpha-band oscillations and cognitive function were higher in low than in high disease-severity group (ρ: -0.58 vs. -0.38, p < 0.05). The AUC of selected alpha-band parameters were higher than 0.8 for VFT and CTT. Specific alpha-band parameters in the frontal lobe were identified to correspond to executive and processing function. Assessing EEG alpha-band oscillations may assist in screening cognitive impairment.

Association of Age with Dual-Task Objective Cognitive Indicators and Gait Parameters in Older Adults.

Early recognition of dementia like Alzheimer's disease is crucial for disease diagnosis and treatment, and existing objective tools for early screening of cognitive impairment are limited. To investigate age-related behavioral indicators of dual-task cognitive performance and gait parameters and to explore potential objective markers of early cognitive decline. The community-based cognitive screening data was analyzed. Hierarchical cluster analysis and Pearson correlation analysis were performed on the 9-item subjective cognitive decline (SCD-9) scores, walking-cognitive dual-task performance, walking speed, and gait parameters of 152 participants. The significant differences of indicators that may related to cognitive decline were statistically analyzed across six age groups. A mathematical model with age as the independent variable and motor cognition composite score as the dependent variable was established to observe the trend of motor cognition dual-task performance with age. Strong correlation was found between motor cognitive scores and SCD and age. Gait parameters like the mean value of ankle angle, the left-right difference rate of ankle angle and knee angle and the coefficient of variation of gait cycle showed an excellent correlation with age. Motor cognition scores showed a decreasing trend with age. The slope of motor cognition scores with age after 50 years (k = -1.06) was six times higher than that before 50 years (k = -0.18). Cognitive performance and gait parameters in the walking-cognitive dual-task state are promising objective markers that could characterize age-related cognitive decline.

This study surveyed 51 specialist clinicians for their views on existing cognitive screening tests for mild cognitive impairment and their opinions about a hypothetical remote screener driven by artificial intelligence (AI). Responses revealed significant concerns regarding the sensitivity, specificity, and time taken to administer current tests, along with a general willingness to consider adopting telephone-based screening driven by AI. Findings highlight the need to design screeners that address the challenges of recognizing the earliest stages of cognitive decline and that prioritize not only accuracy but also stakeholder input.

Abstract PO1-11-10: Use of a standardized tool for the evaluation and treatment of cancer related cognitive impairment (chemo-brain) among breast cancer patients

Abstract There is a steep linear increase in patients surviving a cancer diagnosis. Clinical solutions that address the high prevalence of cancer-related treatment effects (CRTE) are urgently needed. A stark example of this need is the dearth of screening and treatment programs for cancer related cognitive impairment (CRCI) (colloquially called “chemo-brain”). Up to 75% of cancer patients report neurocognitive changes that leave patients unable to cope with the expectations of employers, colleagues, families, and friends. The prevalence of neurological disorders is 275% higher among adult cancer patients, when compared to an adult cancer-free population. For many adolescent and young adult cancer patients, the onset of CRCI occurs during "cognitive prime time"; a time when individuals are pursuing education, careers, and raising families. To address a gap in CRTE we have implemented a virtual multi-disciplinary intervention to measure and treat CRCI. Our CRCI intervention follows National Comprehensive Cancer Network and American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) guidelines for CRCI. These guidelines indicate a multi-disciplinary approach with emphasis on increasing physical activity levels, cognitive-behavioral therapy, memory adaptive training, mood management, and sleep optimization. Our approach also follows recent ASCO guidelines for nutrition counseling. Our CRCI program utilizes medical oncologists, physician assistants, mental health therapists, registered dietitians, and occupational therapists. A nationally validated patient reported outcome (PRO) measurement, analysis, and reporting platform informs clinical treatment pathways, monitors patient progress, guides clinical decision making, and improves patient/provider communication. Using health status measures for CRCI, and following American Cancer Society and ASCO guidelines, patients are risk-stratified into three personalized cancer survivor care pathways: 1) low-complexity patients; 2) medium-complexity patients; and 3) high-complexity patients. Low-complexity patients baseline PROs score in the normal range, medium-complexity patients are those who score below the norm (moderate to large effect size difference from normal), and high-complexity patients are those who score well below the norm (greater than larger effect size difference from normal). Low-complexity patients are enrolled into a self-management and continuation of care program. Medium-complexity patients are enrolled into a shared care program. High-complexity patients are enrolled into an acute care program. All three clinical pathways include continued risk-factor vital-sign surveillance. Nearly 100% (99%) of patients who enroll in our primary cancer survivor care program complete our PRO baseline (N=80). From a convenient sample of breast cancer patients (N=42), provisional results of patient-specific segmentation analyses reveal a nearly perfect bell-shaped curve, with 51% of the population classified within the definition of medium-complexity and even split of outliers (high-complexity 24% and low-complexity 24%). Additionally, of all patients in our primary cancer survivor care program who completed at least three measurement time points for health status measures of cognitive impartment (N=38), 92% had a positive experience, 71% had a clinically significant improvement in cognitive health, 21% had a no change in cognitive status, and only 8% had a decline in cognitive health. If these data, and PRO implementation approach hold true, this program could be scaled to national and international cancer survivor population suffering from CRCI. The Montreal Cognitive Assessment detects cognitive deficits that go unnoticed during clinical observation in the acute phase after stroke

ABSTRACT Background Detecting cognitive impairments early after stroke is essential for appropriate referrals. Although recommended in stroke guidelines, early cognitive screening is not always implemented. We assessed whether the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) adds diagnostic value compared to clinical observation alone. In addition, discharge destinations for stroke patients with and without cognitive deficits detected with the screening tool or the treatment team were explored. Methods Forty-four stroke patients were screened with the MoCA during stroke unit admission. Their charts were studied for cognitive impairments reported by the stroke care team, who were blinded to screening scores. Proportions of detected cognitive deficits were compared between screening (score <26) and patient charts. Discharge destination distribution (home vs. rehabilitation) was explored. Results The proportion of cognitively impaired patients indicated by the MoCA (84%) and reported in patients’ charts (25%) differed significantly (p < 0.001). The distribution of discharge destination did not suggest an association with the detection of cognitive deficits by the treatment team or the cognitive screening. Conclusions The MoCA detects more cognitive deficits than clinical impression alone, emphasizing the importance of standard screening for cognitive impairments in acute stroke patients. Ultimately, systematic screening may enhance discharge planning and improve long-term outcomes.

Implementing cognitive screenings for outpatients with bipolar disorder following optimized treatment in a specialized mood disorder clinic

Bipolar disorder (BD) is often accompanied by persistent cognitive impairment. However, screening for cognitive impairment in the clinic is challenged by a lack of consensus on screening procedures. This study assesses cognitive impairment prevalence and screening feasibility in alignment with the International Society for Bipolar Disorder Targeting Cognition Task Force recommendations. Between January 2022 and May 2023, 136 newly diagnosed BD outpatients were assessed with the Screen for Cognitive Impairment in Psychiatry after 15-20 months of specialized care at the Copenhagen Affective Disorder Clinic. Cognitive impairment patterns and associations with cognitive complaints, perceived stress, and functioning were examined. Most screened patients (73%) achieved full or partial remission, with 51% being cognitively normal, 38% showing global impairments, and 11% displaying selective impairments. Among remitted patients, 56% were cognitively normal, while 31% and 13% exhibited global or selective impairments, respectively. Both objectively impaired patient groups reported more subjective cognitive difficulties than those who were cognitively normal. The globally impaired group also demonstrated poorer functioning, more depressive symptoms and lower quality of life than cognitively normal patients. Across all patients, lower cognitive performance correlated with more cognitive complaints, lower functioning, lower quality of life, and more depressive symptoms. Cognitive screenings were relatively easily implementable, involving only a 1.5-hour session including mood ratings, feedback and cognitive strategy discussion. The study highlights the clinical relevance and feasibility of cognitive screenings in BD patients, emphasizing the need for tailored interventions given frequent cognitive impairment in clinically stable individuals.

Determinants of self-perceived quality of life in mildly disabled multiple sclerosis patients: a cross-sectional study.

While the determinants influencing self-perceived health-related quality of life (spHRQoL) in persons with multiple sclerosis (pwMS) and severe physical impairment have been well investigated, their impact on pwMS with mild disability is poorly addressed. We aimed to investigate possible drivers of spHRQoL among Sardinian pwMS with an EDSS lower than 2.5. A sample of 87 fully ambulatory (EDSS < 2.5) pwMS were included after screening for major cognitive impairment. spHRQoL was measured with the Italian version of 36-Item Short Form Health Survey (SF-36). The Physical Component Summary (PCS) and Mental Component Summary (MCS) were used as dependent variables for univariate analysis with Cognitive Behavioral Assessment (CBA) and specific individual factors as independent variables. Subsequent multivariate general linear models (GLMs) for PCS and MCS respectively were run after stepwise regression. Normative data referring to Italian population were used for comparison. As compared to normative data, no statistically significant difference was found for PCS, while MCS was reduced. Multivariate GLMs showed a significant association between lower PCS scores and presence of psychosomatic symptoms, older age and fatigue (p < 0.05). Furthermore, a significant association was shown between lower MCS scores and presence of anxiety (p < 0.001). Mood, presence of psychosomatic symptoms, fatigue and age can have a relevant impact on spHRQoL in people with mildly disabling MS and should be considered in the management of such individuals.

Diagnostic Accuracy of Digital Solutions for Screening for Cognitive Impairment: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

The early detection of cognitive impairment is essential in order to initiate interventions and guarantee access to healthcare services. Digital solutions are emerging in the literature as an alternative approach to cognitive screening. Our primary goal is to synthesize the evidence on digital solutions’ diagnostic ability to screen for cognitive impairment and their accuracy. A secondary goal is to distinguish whether the ability to screen for cognitive impairment varies as a function of the type of digital solution: paper-based or innovative digital solutions. A systematic review and meta-analysis of digital solutions’ diagnostic accuracy were conducted, including 25 studies. Digital solutions presented a variable diagnostic accuracy range. Innovative digital solutions offered at least 0.78 of sensitivity but showed lower specificity levels than the other subgroup. Paper-based digital solutions revealed at least 0.72 of specificity, but sensitivity started at 0.49. Most digital solutions do not demand the presence of a trained professional and include an automatic digital screening system and scoring, which can enhance cognitive screening and monitoring. Digital solutions can potentially be used for cognitive screening in the community and clinical practice, but more investigation is needed for an evidence-based decision. A careful assessment of the accuracy levels and quality of evidence of each digital solution is recommended.

Development of a new computer simulated environment to screen cognition: assessing the feasibility and acceptability of Leaf Café in younger and older adults

BackgroundExisting traditional cognitive screening tools for dementia have various limitations, including overreliance on tests assessing verbal memory and, to a lesser extent, on some aspects of executive functioning. Comprehensive neuropsychological assessment is sensitive to impairment but time-intensive and expensive. Virtual reality may provide a dynamic and unique understanding of cognitive performance and increase the ecological validity of cognitive assessment. The use of virtual reality in screening for cognitive function in older persons is promising, but evidence for its use remains sparse.ObjectiveOur primary aim was to examine the feasibility and acceptability of a newly developed, virtual reality assessment module, ‘Leaf Café’, a computer-based program that assesses cognition in an engaging, efficient, and ecologically relevant way. The secondary aim was to assess the ability of the module to discriminate between performances of younger and older adults.MethodsA cross-sectional study was carried out in Sydney, Australia, targeting adults aged 18 years and above. Participants completed a traditional cognitive screening tool (Telephone Interview for Cognitive Status-Modified, TICS-M) and Leaf Café, a low-immersive virtual reality module designed to evaluate learning and memory, perceptual-motor function, and executive functioning. The total performance score for each participant, ranging from 0 to 180, was correlated with their cognitive performance assessed by TICS-M, using Pearson’s correlation coefficient. Following module completion, participants were presented with an open and closed-question survey to capture their perceptions, attitudes, and feedback on the module, encompassing practicality, acceptability, and enjoyment. Both descriptive and content analyses were employed to interpret the obtained data.ResultsA sample of 131 participants (mean age 54.9 years, SD = 20.8, range 20–85) took part. The majority were female (71.8%) and born in an English-speaking country (75.8%). The mean amount of time spent in the module was 32.8 min (SD = 13.3) with a mean module score of 107.6 (SD = 38.7). Most participants completed the highest level (5; 80.5%). There was a significant correlation between Leaf Café total scores with TICS-M cognitive scores overall, and for both younger (aged 18–64 years) and older adult (aged 65 + years) groups. No significant difference was found on performance between age groups on TICS-M performance, however, younger adults had significantly better performance on the Leaf Café module than older adults (M = 124.1 vs 95.9; p < .001). Participants had similar response proportions regarding user experience with most agreeing that the module was easy to use (84%) and to navigate (85%). Compared with younger adults, older adults had lower rates of agreement on the module’s design (36.8% vs 64.3%; p = .020) and support experienced (20.5% vs 53.6%; p = .007). Participants highlighted the significance of practicality and the cognitive challenges presented by the module, in terms of memory strain and user interface concerns. Feedback encompassed different opinions on the usefulness of music, with suggestions for improvements centred around clearer instructions, varied game dynamics, and considerations for diverse user needs.ConclusionsLeaf Café is a feasible and acceptable tool to be used for screening for cognitive impairment in older adults and has real-world assessment value. Further verification on the game’s utility in detecting cognitive impairment is required.

Dementia and mild cognitive impairment screening in an emergency homeless shelter.

Older adults represent the fastest growing segment of the homeless community. Little is known about the prevalence of dementia and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) in this population. Dementia and MCI screening using the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) was incorporated into the standard senior evaluation for adult clients aged ≥ 55 in a large emergency homeless shelter. In a 6-week period, 104 of 112 (92.9%) assessments were positive for dementia or MCI using a standard cutoff of 26, and 81 (72.3%) were positive using a conservative cutoff of 23. There was no significant difference in MoCA scores based on sex or education level, and no significant correlation between age and MoCA score. Older adults experiencing homelessness may have a high likelihood of dementia or MCI. Routine MoCA screening in older adults experiencing homelessness is feasible and can help to identify services needed to successfully exit homelessness.

The diagnostic accuracy of the Mini-Cog screening tool for the detection of cognitive impairment-A systematic review and meta-analysis.

The Mini-Cog is a rapid screening tool that can be administered to older adults to detect cognitive impairment (CI); however, the accuracy of the Mini-Cog to detect CI for older patients in various healthcare settings is unclear. To evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of the Mini-Cog to screen for cognitive impairment in older patients across different healthcare settings. We searched nine electronic databases (including MEDLINE, Embase) from inception to January 2023. We included studies with patients ≥60 years old undergoing screening for cognitive impairment using the Mini-Cog across all healthcare settings. A cut-off of ≤ 2/5 was used to classify dementia, mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and cognitive impairment (defined as either MCI or dementia) across various settings. The diagnostic accuracy of the Mini-Cog was assessed against gold standard references such as the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM). A bivariate random-effects model was used to estimate accuracy and diagnostic ability. The risk of bias was assessed using QUADAS-2 criteria. The systematic search resulted in 4,265 articles and 14 studies were included for analysis. To detect dementia (six studies, n = 4772), the Mini-Cog showed 76% sensitivity and 83% specificity. To detect MCI (two studies, n = 270), it showed 84% sensitivity and 79% specificity. To detect CI (eight studies, n = 2152), it had 67% sensitivity and 83% specificity. In the primary care setting, to detect either MCI, dementia, or CI (eight studies, n = 5620), the Mini-Cog demonstrated 73% sensitivity and 84% specificity. Within the secondary care setting (seven studies, n = 1499), the Mini-Cog to detect MCI, dementia or CI demonstrated 73% sensitivity and 76% specificity. A high or unclear risk of bias persisted in the patient selection and timing domain. The Mini-Cog is a quick and freely available screening tool and has high sensitivity and specificity to screen for CI in older adults across various healthcare settings. It is a practical screening tool for use in time-sensitive and resource-limited healthcare settings.

The Nursing Practitioner Workforce: Attitudes, Preferences and Solutions towards Aging Population with Cognitive Disorder - A Systematic Literature Review

Objectives: The objective of this systematic review is to comprehensively evaluate screening practices for cognitive impairment in older adults, emphasizing the critical role of nurse practitioners. Methodology: a systematic literature search of the major databases, inclusive of PubMed, PsycINFO, and Cochrane library was carried out. The search was keywords centred on articles that dealt with cognitive impairment screening in older adults with mental health problems. Articles were carefully chosen according to the inclusion criteria such as only those articles which had been published during the last nine years and had undergone a peer-review process. Data extraction process involved identification of screening methods, participant characteristics, and major findings. The quality assessment made sure that the chosen literature was of good reliability, and data synthesis identified common factors such as similarities and differences between various studies. Results: The search resulted to 144 articles but after intensive screening 20 of them were included in the review. Results were reported from different healthcare settings, showing both the frequency and the effectiveness of screening tools for identifying cognitive impairment. The role of nurse practitioners was identified in the selected articles, more particularly in establishment screening systems, use tools for identification, and practice advanced roles. The synthesis revealed the role of patient-centred treatment, all-rounded approaches, and the opportunity of blending cognitive screening with routine healthcare practices.

Screening and Recognition of Cognitive Impairment in Older People Visiting Hearing Aid Dispensers in the Netherlands

ObjectivesThis study aims to determine how prevalent suspected cognitive impairment is in older people visiting hearing aid dispensers, and to assess whether hearing aid dispensers’ judgment on cognition was in accordance with the outcome of a cognitive screening. DesignThis observational study was conducted between April and May 2022. Setting and ParticipantsFour private hearing aid retail stores in the Netherlands, where cognitive impairment was screened in people aged ≥60 years. MethodsThe Mini-Cog was used for cognitive screening. In addition, hearing aid dispensers were asked to provide their professional judgment if they suspected cognitive impairment. ResultsOf the total 239 older individuals screened, 133 were men [56%, mean age: 79 years (SD 8.6)], and 51 (21.3%) had abnormal outcomes on the Mini-Cog test. The recognition of possible cognitive impairment by the hearing aid dispensers compared to the outcome of the Mini-Cog resulted in correct predictions for 183 of the 239 individuals. Conclusion and ImplicationsCognitive screening in hearing-impaired older adults who visit a hearing aid dispenser suggests that cognitive impairment might be present in approximately 1 in 5 individuals. Hearing aid dispensers' response to the presence of a cognitive impairment was in 2 of 3 in accordance with an abnormal outcome on cognitive screening. To improve hearing care for people with cognitive impairment, it might be important to enhance hearing care professionals’ recognition of cognitive impairment in older individuals.
