Suitability of high-pressure xenon as scintillator for gamma ray spectroscopy

In this paper we report the experimental study of high-pressure xenon used as a scintillator, in the context of developing a gamma ray detector. We measure a light yield near 2 photoelectrons per keV for xenon at 40bar. Together with the light yield, we also measured an energy resolution of ∼9% (FWHM) at 662keV.

Gamma ray spectroscopy and timing using LSO and PIN photodiodes

The high density, high light output, and short decay time of LSO (lutetium orthosilicate, Lu/sub 2/SiO/sub 5/:Ce) make it an attractive scintillator for gamma ray spectroscopy. The low cost, small size, high quantum efficiency, and ruggedness of silicon photodiodes make them attractive photodetectors for this same application, although their high noise (compared to a photomultiplier tube) reduces their appeal. In this work we measure the gamma ray energy resolution, timing accuracy, and conversion factor from gamma energy to number of electron-hole pairs produced with a 3/spl times/3/spl times/22 mm/sup 3/ LSO scintillator crystal read out with a 3/spl times/3 mm/sup 2/ silicon PIN photodiode. When the detector is excited with 511 keV photons, a photopeak centered at 1940 e/sup -/ with 149 keV fwhm is observed and a timing signal with 35 ns FWHM jitter is produced. When the detector is excited with 1275 keV photons, a photopeak centered at 4910 e/sup -/ with 149 keV FWHM is observed and a timing signal with 25 ns FWHM jitter is produced. While these performance measures are inferior to those obtained with photomultiplier tubes, they are acceptable for some applications.< <ETX xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">&gt;</ETX>

The use of HgI 2 photodetectors combined with scintillators for gamma-ray spectroscopy

Gamma-ray spectrometers using mercuric iodide (HgI 2) photodetectors (PDs) combined with scintillators have been designed, fabricated and tested. The technology developed makes it possible to reliably produce high quality HgI 2 PDs with a relatively high yield. The energy resolution of 4.58% FWHM for 662 keV 137Cs gamma-ray photons has been obtained. The HgI 2 PD configuration, packaging and encapsulation is described in the paper. After successfully developing the technology for making high quality detectors, the emphasis of our effort has been placed on making large area detectors, i.e., increasing detector diameters from 0.5 in. to between 1 and 2 in. HgI 2 PD characteristics, which include energy resolution, electronic noise, leakage current, detector capacitance, and long term stability have been evaluated and are reported in the paper.
