Application of Kaizen Principles to a Small Scale Industry in India

This case-study presents the application of Kaizen concept to Chempromech Engineers Pvt. Ltd. in Butribori, Maharashtra, India. The work carried out focuses on Kaizen approach to the Plant Layout of the industry to make it more efficient and desirable to work in as well as gives a formula to the industry to calculate its production in kg/hr theoretically. Chempromech Engineers Pvt. Ltd. Is a small scale industry present in the Butibori MIDC area in Nagpur, Maharashtra which specializes in manufacturing of circlip washer wires and washers. Being a small-scale industry, it is faced with problems pertaining to limited workspace, so a new layout is designed which helps groups machines based in their product type and thus freeing out space for future expansion. Product Based Plant Layout is preferred for this industry as its products vary in size and weight. Key words:- Kaizen, Plant Layout, Product Based Plant Layout, Washers and Washer wire.

The Role of Small-Scale Industries in Achieving the Sustainable Development: the Experience of India

The article deals with the role of small scale industry in India in achieving the sustainable development. The author draws attention to the fact that the small scale industry promotion policy impacts significantly not only on decreasing the unemployment rate as well as long-term and youth unemployment but also on solving such acute social problems as poverty, famine, undernourishment and food insecurity, lack of quality education, gender inequality and the empowerment of women. The author pays attention to the evolution of small business in India in 1950-2010s. It argues convincingly that due to significant number of population as well as low-skilled labor on the one hand and limited financial resources on the other one small business has been considered to be a buffer between modern big business and the bulk of the population remaining outside it. The author considers the effectiveness of the industrial policy through the prism of stimulating small-scale industry and changing its place in the Indian economy. The author examines the activity of the The National Bank for Agricultural and Rural Development (NABARD) which is considered to be the most important institution which looks after the development of the small scale industries. The aim of NABARD was poverty reduction and development assistance (it’s one of the premier agencies providing developmental credit in rural areas). The article presents the definition of small scale industry in India both in terms of employment level and the investment limits as well as statistical data on number of units, its share in industrial production and exports and expansion of small scale sector in 2000-2010s. The author identified main problems facing cottage and small scale industries in India at the present time. The research is based on the systematic approach to the study of national economy using basic methods of scientific knowledge such as induction and deduction, analysis and synthesis.

Evaluation for sustainability of machining processes in Indian small scale industries

Abstract Machining industries form a major part of small and mediocre scale industries in India. Also, the wastes generated and the resources consumed by these industries are quite significant. Due to the expansion of industries in recent years, there has been an adverse impact on the environment. Renewable resources are getting exhausted at a rate which is greater than the rate of their regeneration, and wastes are being produced at a rate which is far higher than the rate at which current waste management techniques work. In this context, sustainability for a machining industry has become a necessity, rather than just a choice. This work aims at studying some of the existing practices in small-scale Indian machining industries, and comparing the various available alternatives. Critical parameters for sustainability like spindle power, average time period of operation of the machine (hours), amount of waste produced (kg), cost of raw material, cost of tooling, cost of maintenance and cost of waste management were simultaneously considered. The available alternatives were compared using various Multi-Attribute Decision Making (MADM) methods like TOPSIS and AHP. In addition to this, this paper intends to introduce some sustainability solutions with the perspective of cost minimization. The solutions in this work are suggested while considering society, environment and economy simultaneously. This paper suggests the appropriate ways to communicate the obtained results to the decision makers of small-scale industries. The need of hour is to maximize profit with optimal use of resources. There are many small scale industries in India. This case study emphasis on implementation of Kaizen on assembly line in a small scale industry that manufacture Visi cooler (Chocolate cooler) for Cadbury. Many small improvements lead to perfection but perfection is a big thing. Kaizen methodology helped us to improve the efficiency and reduce the wastes on Visi cooler assembly line. Small Scale Industries in India - A Review of Marketing Problems

Small Industries (SSIs) play an important role in the economic development of our country. These industries have distinct advantages of low capital requirement, high potential for employment generation, and decentralization of industrial base and dispersal of industries to rural areas. Their significance further lies in the fact they account for about 50per cent of the total industrial production, considering the glorious historical background of SSIs and their highly significant role in promoting rural industrialization. SIS are aptly suited to our economy on economic as well as social grounds. The Small Scale Industrial sector (SSI sector) contributed about 40 percent of value addition in the manufacturing sector and about 30 percent of export (both direct and indirect). More the 118.53 lakh units (which include both registered and unregistered units) are spread all over the country producing over 7500 items and providing employment to more than 282.82 lakh persons. SSI sector has acquired a permanent place in the socio-economic development of the country during the past 50 years and constitutes an important segment of the economy and also has emerged as an engine of growth in the millennium by bringing Industrialization of rural, backward areas and reducing regional imbalance. Strategy development by small scale industries in India

PurposeIn the present scenario of e‐globalization, small scale industries (SSIs) are considered engine for economic growth all over the world. After markets globalization, SSIs are facing many pressures and constraints to sustain their competitiveness. The purpose of this paper is to examine various issues in context of Indian SSIs such as nature of pressures and constraints, competitive priorities, competencies development, areas of investment, and their relationship with performance.Design/methodology/approachFor collecting data, a questionnaire‐based survey was conducted. In total, 75 valid responses were received. Statistical analysis of data acquired from survey is done by reliability test, t‐test, and correlation analysis.FindingsCost reduction, quality improvement, and delivery in time have emerged as major challenges for SSIs. Market research, welfare of employees, and research and development are found as major areas for investment. Use of information technology, training of employees, and research and development has significant relationship with performance.Research limitations/implicationsOrganizations should develop their strategies after analysing business environment and SSIs should utilize their resources judiciously. However, it is felt that this study can be further explored by considering other aspects of strategy development such as human resource, vendor development, organization culture, etc.Originality/valueFindings and issues of the paper will be highly useful for SSIs in framing their strategies, and academia for further research in the context of changing market scenario.

An outlook into energy consumption in large scale industries in India: The cases of steel, aluminium and cement

All the growth-oriented sectors in a developing economy consume enormous energy in their production processes. Steel, aluminium and cement are the key manufacturing industries in India which provide inputs to various other sectors such as construction, transportation, power transmission, etc. As a result, their demand is consistently rising. These industries are heavily energy-intensive and use raw materials such as iron ore, coal, electricity, steam, and fuel oil, whose supply can act as severe production constraints over a period of time and can hinder sustainable development. Hence it becomes imperative for these industries to continuously innovate more energy efficient techniques. This paper makes a foray into the energy demand for these industries and explores the potential of any future reduction in their energy consumption. The paper offers a projection scenario for 2001–2031 (based on the MARKAL Modeling exercise for India) for possible catching up in reduction in energy consumptions in these sectors under alternative situations. The analysis suggests the existence of some plausible energy efficiency enhancing techniques in these industries. Exploring these options will definitely ensure cost effectiveness and competitiveness of these three key sectors in the global market.

Analyzing the technical and scale efficiency of small industries in India: state‐wise cluster study

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to examine the relative production efficiency of state‐wise clusters in the registered small‐scale sector in India.Design/methodology/approachFor this, data envelopment analysis under the assumption of variable returns to scale is used. Using BCC model, technical and scale efficiencies for 23 states and three union territories are estimated.FindingsSeven states namely, Delhi, Meghalaya, Uttranchal, Haryana, Punjab, Andaman and Nicobar and Tamilnadu are found to be technically efficient whereas Delhi and Meghalaya came out to be the only scale efficient states. Most of the states are found to be operating at decreasing returns to scale, which signifies the scope for investment and further employment generation.Practical implicationsSince the results indicate massive scope for expansion and employment generation in small industries in India, therefore, policy makers can use it as a tool to achieve the goal of inclusive and sustainable growth.Originality/valueOriginality lies in providing, for the first time, an inter state technical and scale efficiency analysis for small scale industries in India which in turn reflects the performance efficiency of the state level policies for the small scale industries.

Relative Efficiency of Modern Small Scale Industries in India: An Inter-State Comparison

This paper presents measures of relative efficiency for nine small scale industries in fifteen major states of India. An index of relative efficiency based on total factor productivity is used. It is observed that there are wide differences in efficiency of these industries among the states. The extent of variations in efficiency is much wider in intermediate product and consumer non-durable industries than in consumer durable industries. Relative size, as measured by the value of production per unit, is found to be an important source of inter-state differences in efficiency. It is also found that intermediate product industries have substantial economies of scale.

Information Technology

Small scale industries (SSI) have a significant role in the Indian economy in view of its contribution to production, employment, and export. However, since 1991 small scale industries in India find themselves in an intensely competitive environment due to globalization, domestic economic liberalization, and dilution of sector specific protective measures. The formation of World Trade Organization in 1995 also forced the member countries (including India) to drastically scale down the restrictions on import. This article analyzes the various factors influencing the growth of small scale industries in India. Information Technology (IT) is one of the significant factors, which is, in general, not used by the small scale industries in India for their production and business process, in the growth of small scale industries in India. Further on the basis of Nolan’s ‘Stages of growth model’ the stages of use of information technology in small scale industries are studied.
