In recent years it has become evident that electrification of the chemical industry is essential to shift from a fossil based society to a renewable and sustainable one. In this talk, we will address development of a pilot scale setup to upconvert bioderived feedstocks to relevant building blocks for the chemical industry. Specifically, we focused our attention to the concept of paired electrolysis: oxidation of furfural to maleic acid coupled with reduction of levulinic acid to valeric acid within the same electrochemical cell. Within the framework of this mentioned reaction, we will show different steps of the reactions optimization, scale up, process intensification that eventually led to the construction and testing of pilot power platform installation with electrochemical surface area of 1m2 (10 cell stack 1000cm2) andproductivities of about 6kg/day (Figure 1). We will also focus on downstream process needed to go from crude electrolyte to pure maleic acid and pure valeric acid.
