Carcinosarcoma of the Bladder: A Case Report and Review of the Literature

Carcinosarcoma of the urinary bladder is a rare neoplasm that is composed of malignant epithelial and mesenchymal components. In these tumors, histogenesis and biological behaviour remain controversial. Approximately 70 cases have been reported in the literature, usually as case reports or a small series. A series of 221 cases using the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) Program database has been reported recently. Optimal treatment is uncertain. Herein, we report a case of sarcomatoid carcinoma of urinary bladder of a farmer aged 84 years old with a year history of hematuria and dysuria. A transurethral resection of the tumor (TUR-T) revealed a carcinosarcoma. The patient underwent radical cystectomy, and there is no tumor recurrence for 15 months after treatments.

Sarcomatoid carcinoma of the urinary bladder: A case report

Background: Sarcomatoid carcinoma of the urinary bladder is very rare variety of transitional cell carcinoma (TCC) with a prominent component of spindle-shaped cell. The incidence rate of this tumor is 0.5 % of all bladder tumors.Case report: Herein, we report a case of sarcomatoid carcinoma of urinary bladder of a farmer aged 70 years old, smoker with the complaints of lower abdominal pain, mild burning during urination and 3 episodes of painless gross haematuria. USG of KUB revealed a cystic lesion in front of the anterior bladder wall. We planned for total cystectomy but patient refused, so, partial cystectomy was carried out. Diagnosis was confirmed by histopathological study. Sarcomatoid Carcinoma of the Urinary Bladder: A Clinicopathological Study of 4 Cases and a Review of the Literature

Sarcomatoid carcinoma (SC) of urinary bladder is a rare tumor exhibiting aggressive behavior. Here we are reviewing the pathologic and clinical characteristics of 4 consecutive cases of this rare tumor. Three out of 4 patients were males and one female. The median age was 72.8 years (range, 60-79 years). Patients underwent transurethral resection of bladder tumor and the diagnosis of bladder SC was established on the pathologic examination of the resected bladder tissue. Despite treatment all patients died within 22 months of the diagnosis of SC. SC of the bladder are true biphasic malignant neoplasm exhibiting morphologic and immunohistochemical evidence of epithelial and mesenchymal differentiation with the presence or absence of heterologous elements. The aggressive of the tumor precludes radical therapy whenever possible, since adjuvant therapy seems to have little effect.
