Lake Sentani Water Quality Index based on NSF-WQI as Raw Water for Drinking Water for Lake Sentani Coastal communities, Jayapura Regency

Lake Sentani has an area of ​​about 9,630 ha and is located at an altitude of 72 m above sea level. Residents who live on the shores and shores of the lake, use the lake water for bathing, washing and latrine purposes. They also use it as raw water for drinking water and also as a means of transportation and even throw household waste into the lake water. There are 5 (five) rivers as the inlet, namely the Hawaii, Yamolo, Klandeli, Dofroko and Hobay rivers and there is one estuary, the Djaifuri River which is located in the east (Puay area). This study aims to determine the index of each water quality parameter and the total index of water quality. The water quality index parameters studied were; DO, Fecal coliform, pH, BOD, Temperature, Total Sulfate, Nitrate-N, Turbidity and Total Dissolved Solid (TDS). Sampling was carried out at 3 (three) sample points (stations) namely the mouth of the Haway River (Ifale Sentani), the middle of the lake (Ayapo Sentani) and the Upper Jaifuri River (Puay Yoka). Determination of the Total Water Quality Index is calculated using the National Sanitation Foundation's Water Quality Index (NSF-WQI) method for both Lake Sentani water and the total standard water quality index. The test results of each parameter are compared with the Class 1 Water Quality Standards Government Regulation of the Republic of Indonesia Number 22 of 2021 concerning the Implementation of Environmental Protection and Management. The results obtained from the research at 3 (three) research stations turned out that station 1 obtained an index of 44.24 and station 3 obtained an index of 46.60 both classified as Bad (bad), station 2 obtained an index of 51.42 classified as Medium (medium), while the standard water quality class 1 obtained a quality index of 47.24 classified as Bad (poor) too. Thus, when compared with the standard water quality index of class 1, what meets the requirements as raw water for drinking water is lake water at station 2 (Ayapu Sentani) where the index value is greater than the quality standard.

Treated wastewater suitability for reuse in comparison to groundwater and surface water in a peri-urban area: Implications for water quality management

The climate change and population growth led to a severe water shortage that limits fresh water availability in some areas of Togo. Thus, the farmers of Adjougba District have no other choice than using treated wastewater as an alternative for irrigated agriculture. The purpose of this study is to compare the suitability of three types of water for uses with identification of the reliable parameters in the assessment of water suitability for irrigation and domestic purposes. The raw water quality parameters, water quality indices (WQIs) and water suitability indicators for irrigation purpose (WSI-IPs) were applied for the comparison while statistical analysis and, with some experts' consensus were used to identify reliable parameters. The results suggested that the treated wastewater is more suitable than groundwater for irrigation purpose. Treated wastewater constitutes a viable fertilizer supply and is placed like surface water from permissible to excellent classes according to WSI-IPs values. The sodium absorption ratio (SAR), electrical conductivity (EC), residual sodium carbonate (RSC), Cl− and faecal coliforms (FC) are the most reliable parameters in the detection of water suitability for irrigation purpose. EC, DO, pH, turbidity or TSS, COD or CODMn, hardness, FC, NO3−, national sanitation foundation's water quality index (NSFWQI), and overall index of pollution (OPI) are the most reliable in the detection of water suitability for domestic use. The reliable parameters identified in this study are potential candidates for the development of a single water quality index for both irrigation and domestic uses in Adjougba District. However further study will be necessary for the identification of reliable parameters and the development of a water quality index at the country scale.

Ground and surface water quality assessment of Palladam Taluk using Geographical Information System and Modified National Sanitation Foundation -Water Quality Index

In this work, the assessment of surface and ground water quality of Palladam Taluk, Tiruppur, district, Tamil Nadu, India were carried out using Geographical Information System (GIS) and Modified National Sanitation Foundation -Water Quality Index (MNSF-WQI). Four samples from surface and twenty seven samples from ground water sources were taken from Palladam Taluk, Tiruppur District. In the current study, the surface and ground water samples were analysed for temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), electrical conductivity (EC), biological oxygen demand (BOD), turbidity, total dissolved solids (TDS), total hardness (TH), faecal coliforms (FC), total phosphate (TP), total nitrate (TN), chlorides (Cl-), sodium (Na+) and fluoride (F-) ions to investigate the suitability of surface and ground water for drinking and agricultural purposes through Geographic information system (GIS) and modified national sanitation foundation water quality index (MNSF-WQI) technique. The concentrations of TH, TDS, Cl- and Na+ were observed to be above the desirable limit of World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines and Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). whereas F-, BOD, DO, EC, TP, TN, FC and temperature were within the acceptable limits. The GIS-based WQI map analysis indicated that 45% of the study area having good water quality index and the remaining area showed medium quality water. Dyeing and textile industries in the study area are responsible for deteriorating the quality to medium quality of water which was not appropriate for direct utilization and needed prior treatment. There is no detailed report on assessment of the surface and ground water quality of Palladam Taluk in Tamil Nadu using GIS and MNSF-WQI techniques.

A fuzzy multi-objective multiple-pollutant model for rivers using an ant colony algorithm

A fuzzy multi-objective optimisation model was investigated for water quality management in a river under uncertain conditions. In this study, to deal with multiple pollutants simultaneously, the National Sanitation Foundation's water quality index was considered as one of the model's objective functions based on fuzzy set theory. This made it possible to investigate the overall effect of uncertainties on simultaneous changes. Another objective function was the total treatment costs for wastewater discharged into the river. A water quality simulation model and a non-dominated-archiving ant colony optimisation algorithm were used to determine the values of water quality parameters and the model's optimal solutions, respectively. Furthermore, a simulation–optimisation approach was adopted for facilitating the problem-solving process and applied to a hypothetical case study resembling a river system in Iran. The results show that the proposed model significantly reduced the total wastewater treatment costs compared with a similar single-objective model with a more cautious and a cost-effective approach. Although the treatment costs were increased compared with the similar deterministic model, more feasible approach was taken by considering the uncertainties associated with the objectives. With suitable modifications, the model could be easily adapted for other river systems.

Application of water quality indices to define surface water quality in Tehran

Tehran is one of the capitals of the world that is not situated around a river, therefore surface water discharges into a network of natural streams and even some artificial canals. Owing to the lack of sewerage system, part of the sewage runs to the network of streams without any control. The aim of this work is to identify a baseline for the water quality, which will then help policy-makers and environmental management on planning strategies for the improvement of water quality and usage of water. The data has been monitored over a period of three years. The author's own data and secondary data was analysed using National Sanitation Foundation's Water Quality Index (NSFWQI) method. The results for both sets of data were the same, which shows the technique for analysing the water quality in Tehran could be applicable. As a whole, this study shows that the quality of surface water in Tehran is not environmentally acceptable by international standards, especially in dry seasons.
