Development of a UAV-borne sorbent tube sampler and its application on the vertical profile measurement of volatile organic compounds

Vertical detection of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is essential to expend our understanding of the distribution characteristics of VOCs and improve the predictive ability of existing air quality models. In this work, we report the development of a sorbent tube sampler based on an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) platform. Vertical profile measurement of VOCs with a vertical resolution of 25 m was achieved. The sampler consists of five lightweight VOC sorbent tubes and a 5-way solenoid valve, making it available for collecting five atmospheric VOC samples in a single flight with a time response of less than 30 min. The sampler weighed ∼ 1.45 kg and had dimensions of 240 mm × 220 mm × 100 mm with small penetration loss (< 10%) under 4-liter sampling conditions (flow rate of 200 mL/min). Commercialized SUMMA canisters were used as experimental controls to investigate the possible loss of self-made sampler for target compounds in the same sampling process. Comparison experiment on the ground showed that the concentration differences for all VOC species were lower than 0.14 μg/m3, proving the good reliability for VOCs measurements using sorbent tube sampler. The UAV platform also incorporated online instruments for meteorological parameters and O3 measurement. The sampler was successfully applied to characterize the vertical profiles of VOCs up to 100 m in October 2023 in the Huaihe River Basin of China. The UAV platform and the sorbent tube sampler demonstrate good performance and will be a valuable and reliable tool for vertical VOCs measurement.

Evaluating Phoenix Metropolitan Area Ozone Behavior Using Ground-Based Sampling, Modeling, and Satellite Retrievals

An oxidizing and harmful pollutant gas, tropospheric ozone is a product of a complex set of photochemical reactions that can make it difficult to enact effective control measures. A better understanding of its precursors including volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) and their spatial distribution can enable policymakers to focus their control efforts. In this study we used low-cost sensors (LCSs) to increase the spatial resolution of an existing NO2 monitoring network in addition to VOC sampling to better understand summer ozone formation in Maricopa County, Arizona, and observed that afternoon O3 values at the downwind sites were significantly correlated, ~0.27, to the morning NO2 × rate values at the urban sites. Additionally, we looked at the impact of wildfire smoke on ozone exceedances and compared non-smoke days to smoke days. The average O3 on smoke days was approximately 20% higher than on non-smoke days, however, the average NO2 concentration multiplied by estimated photolysis rate (NO2 × rate) values were only 2% higher on smoke days. Finally, we evaluated the ozone sensitivity of the region by calculating HCHO/NO2 ratios using three different datasets: ground, satellite, and model. Although the satellite dataset produced higher HCHO/NO2 ratios than the other datasets, when the proper regime thresholds are applied the three datasets consistently show transition and VOC-limited O3 production regimes over the Phoenix metro area. This suggests a need to implement more VOC emission controls in order to reach O3 attainment in the county.

Determination of emission factors from a landfill through an inverse methodology: Experimental determination of ambient air concentrations and use of numerical modelling

The application of numeric modelling for determining the impact of landfills needs for reliable emission source data. In this study, a methodology for the characterization of the emission profiles of the different sources present in landfills for emission factors determination, applying an indirect methodology, is presented. Ambient air concentrations of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), hydrogen sulphide (H2S) and ammonia (NH3) were determined in three potentially emission sources in Can Mata landfill (Hostalets de Pierola, Catalonia, Spain): dumping areas, pre-closed zone and leachate reservoir as well as in biogas, for the determination of emission factors. Multi-sorbent bed and Tenax TA tubes were used for a wide range of VOCs sampling, and analysis was conducted through TD-GC/MS. H2S and NH3 were sampled and analysed using Radiello passive samplers. The highest total VOC (TVOC) concentrations were found in dumping areas (0.7–3.5 mg m−3), followed by leachate reservoir (0.3–0.6 mg m−3) and pre-closed area (77–165 μg m−3). On the other hand, the highest H2S and NH3 concentrations were found in leachate reservoir, presenting values of 0.8–1.1 mg m−3 and 1.7–1.8 mg m−3, respectively. With the application of odour thresholds to the concentrations obtained, the most critical compounds regarding odour annoyances were determined. The highest odour units (O.U.) were found in leachate reservoir due to H2S concentrations, whereas VOCs contributed mainly to O.U. in the dumping areas. The obtained ambient air concentrations were used for the indirect determination of the emission factors through numerical modelling using a Eulerian dispersion model. The emission factors obtained for the landfill for TVOC, H2S and NH3 were in the range of 0.44–10.9 g s-1, 0.16–1.02 g s−1 and 0.23–1.82 g s−1, respectively, depending on the emission source. Reliable emission factors are crucial to obtain landfill impact maps, which are essential for the correct management of these facilities.

Optimization of volatile organic compounds sampling from dairy cow exhaled breath using polymer-based solid-phase extraction cartridges for gas chromatographic analysis

We explored appropriate technical setups for the detection of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from exhaled cow breath by comparing six different polymer-based solid-phase extraction (SPE) cartridges currently on the market for gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC-MS) screening. Exhaled breath was sampled at a single timepoint from five lactating dairy cows using six different SPE cartridges (Bond Elut ENV (ENV); Chromabond HRX (HRX); Chromabond HRP (HRP); Chromabond HLB (HLB); Chromabond HR-XCW (XCW) and Chromabond HR-XAW (XAW)). The trapped VOCs were analyzed by dynamic headspace vacuum in-tube extraction GC-MS (DHS-V-ITEX-GC-MS). Depending on the SPE cartridge, we detected 1174–1312 VOCs per cartridge. Most VOCs were alkenes, alkanes, esters, ketones, alcohols, aldehydes, amines, nitriles, ethers, amides, carboxylic acids, alkynes, azoles, terpenes, pyridines, or sulfur-containing compounds. The six SPE cartridges differed in their specificity for the chemical compounds, with the XAW cartridge showing the best specificity for ketones. The greatest differences between the tested SPE cartridges appeared in the detection of specific VOCs. In total, 176 different VOCs were detected with a match factor >80%. The greatest number of specific VOCs was captured by XAW (149), followed by ENV (118), HLB (117), HRP (115), HRX (114), and XCW (114). We conclude that the tested SPE cartridges are suitable for VOC sampling from exhaled cow breath, but the SPE cartridge choice enormously affects the detected chemical groups and the number of detected VOCs. Therefore, an appropriate SPE adsorbent cartridge should be selected according to our proposed inclusion criteria. For targeted metabolomics approaches, the SPE cartridge choice depends on the VOCs or chemical compound groups of interest based on our provided VOC list. For untargeted approaches without information on the animals’ metabolic condition, we suggest using multi-sorbent SPE cartridges or multiple cartridges per animal.

Effects of psychological stress on the emission of volatile organic compounds from the skin

Thirty-five women were included in a clinical study to characterize the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted by the skin during exposure to psychological stress. An original silicon-based polymeric phase was used for VOC sampling on the forehead before and after stress induction. Cognitive stress was induced using specialized software that included a chronometer for semantic and arithmetic tasks. Assessment of stress was monitored using a State-trait anxiety inventory questionnaire, analysis of participants’ verbal expressions and clinical measurements. Identification and relative quantification of VOCs were performed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Stress induction was validated by a significant increase in state-anxiety as indicated by the questionnaire, modifications in electrodermal activity measurements and the expression of stress verbatims. In parallel, a sebum production increase and a skin pH decrease were observed. A total of 198 VOCs with different potential sources were identified. They were categorized in 5 groups: probable cosmetic composition, VOCs produced by the body or its microbiota, environmental origin, and dietary intake. In our qualitative statistical approach, three VOCs were found to be correlated with stress induction and 14 compounds showed significance in the paired Wilcoxon test. Fatty-acyls derived from lipids were predominantly identified as well as ethylbenzenes.

Volabolomic Fingerprinting for Post-Mortem Interval Estimation: A Novel Physiological Approach.

Death is a multifaceted process wherein each individual cell and tissue has a metabolic homeostasis and a time of functional cessation defined by the dying process as well as by intrinsic and extrinsic factors. Decomposition is physiologically associated with the release of different types of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and these form volaboloma mortis. The main purpose of this study was to record the volabolomic fingerprint produced by volatile molecules during the physiological decomposition process of human tissue and muscle cells. The volatile chemical signature has important implications for an open issue in forensics and pathology, namely the estimation of the postmortem interval (PMI), which decreases in accuracy with the passage of time. Volatile metabolites emitted from human tissues and muscle cells at 0, 24, 48, and 72 h were recorded in real time with an electronic nose sensor device. The key findings were the continuous sampling of VOCs emitted from tissues and cells. These showed a common behavior as time progressed; particularly, after 48 h the distributions became dispersed, and after 72 h they became more variable. Volabolomic fingerprinting associated with time progression relevant to the study of PMIs was reconstructed. Additionally, there may be broader applications, such as in dog training procedures for detecting human remains, and perhaps even for studying scavenger and insect attractants.

Characterization and Source Analysis of Pollution Caused by Atmospheric Volatile Organic Compounds in the Spring, Kunming, China

The surface atmospheric O3 concentration in Kunming shows a significant upward trend, with high values mainly occurring in March–May. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are one of the most important precursors of O3. However, the sources of VOCs are complex and difficult to identify. In order to understand the pollution levels, the spatial distribution characteristics, and possible sources of VOCs, we conducted simultaneous offline sampling at representative sites in six different functional areas of Kunming using SUMMA canisters for one week. The VOC samples were analyzed via GC/MS. The VOC data were analyzed (using the feature ratio method, ozone formation potential (OFP), and Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) model). Some important conclusions were drawn. Firstly, VOCs during the spring in Kunming were mainly derived from oxygenated VOCs, aromatic hydrocarbons, and halogenated hydrocarbons, with significant spatial differences. Secondly, we found that the potential for atmospheric ozone formation is higher in Kunming for aromatic hydrocarbons and oxygenated VOCs. Finally, the results of the Positive Matrix Factorization model (PMF) showed that Kunming’s ambient atmospheric VOCs mainly originate from anthropogenic source emissions. These conclusions can provide useful reference information for O3 pollution control in Kunming.

Secondary-Electrospray Ionization Mass Spectrometry-Based Online Analyses of Mouse Volatilome Uncover Gut Microbiome-Dictated Metabolic Changes in the Host.

The symbiotic relationship between the gut microbial population is capable of regulating numerous aspects of host physiology, including metabolism. Bacteria can modulate the metabolic processes of the host by feeding on nutritional components within the lumen and releasing bioactive components into circulation. Endogenous volatile organic compound (VOC) synthesis is dependent on the availability of precursors found in mammalian metabolism. Herein, we report that microbial-mediated metabolic influences can alter the host volatilome and the prominent volatile changes can be uncovered by a novel volatile analysis technique named secondary electrospray ionization mass spectrometry. Mice were subjected to an antibiotic cocktail to deplete the microbiome and then inoculated with either single strain bacteria or fecal matter transplantation (FMT) to replete the microbial population in the gut. VOC sampling was achieved by using an advanced secondary electrospray ionization (SESI) source that directly mounted onto a Thermo Q-Exactive high-resolution mass spectrometer (HRMS). A principal component analysis summarizing the volatile profiles of the mice revealed independent clustering of each strain of the FMT-inoculated groups, suggesting unique volatile profiles. The Mummichog algorithm uncovered phenylalanine metabolism as a significantly altered metabolic profile in the volatilome of the microbiome-repleted mice. Our results indicated that the systemic metabolic changes incurred by the host are translated to unique volatile profiles correlated to the diversity of the microbial population colonized within the host. It is thus possible to take advantage of SESI-HRMS-based platforms for noninvasive screening of VOCs to determine the contribution of various microbial colonization within human gut that may impact host health.

Detection of tuberculosis-associated compounds from human skin by GCxGC-TOFMS

Tuberculosis (TB) remains a global health concern. This study aimed to investigate the potential of human skin volatile organic compounds (VOCs) as prospective biomarkers for TB diagnosis. It employed a non-invasive approach using a wearable silicone rubber band for VOC sampling, comprehensive gas chromatography – time of flight mass spectrometry (GCxGC-TOFMS), and chemometric techniques. Both targeted and untargeted biochemical screening was utilized to explore biochemical differences between healthy individuals and those with TB infection. Results confirmed a correlation between compounds found in this study, and those reported for TB from other biofluids. In a comparison to known TB-associated compounds from other biofluids our analysis established the presence of 27 of these compounds emanating from human skin. Additionally, 16 previously unreported compounds were found as potential biomarkers. The diagnostic ability of the VOCs selected by statistical methods was investigated using predictive modelling techniques. Artificial neural network multi-layered perceptron (ANN) yielded two compounds, 1H-indene, 2,3 dihydro-1,1,3-trimethyl-3-phenyl; and heptane-3-ethyl-2-methyl, as the most discriminatory, and could differentiate between TB-positive (n = 15) and TB-negative (n = 23) individuals with an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC) of 92 %, a sensitivity of 100 % and a specificity of 94 % for six targeted features. For untargeted analysis, ANN assigned 3-methylhexane as the most discriminatory between TB-positive and TB- negative individuals. An AUROC of 98.5 %, a sensitivity of 83 %, and a specificity of 88 % were obtained for 16 untargeted features as chosen by high performance variable selection. The obtained values compare highly favourable to alternative diagnostic methods such as breath analysis and GeneXpert. Consequently, human skin VOCs hold considerable potential as a TB diagnostic screening test.

Selection of the Second Adsorbent for Sampling Volatile Organic Compounds in the Biomass Gasification Tar Using Solid-Phase Adsorption.

The purpose of this study is to examine the effectiveness of a solid-phase adsorption method for measuring the concentrations of tar compounds in biomass. This method involves collecting tars on a column with an amino-phase sorbent. However, because biomass tar has a high concentration of volatile organic compounds, not all of them can be collected with just one column. Therefore, the researchers decided to add a second column with a different adsorbent to improve the accuracy of the measurement. They also chose to test three different sorbents (Carbopack B, Carbotrap, and activated coconut charcoal) in order to determine which one is the most effective for determining the concentration of volatile organic compounds. The desorption efficiency from various sorbents, the adsorption efficiency of the studied compounds on each sorbent depending on the sampled gas temperature, and the maximal amounts of compounds adsorbed on activated coconut charcoal were evaluated. The best results were obtained using activated coconut charcoal. A modified sampling device consisting of 500 mg of the amino-phase adsorbent and 100 mg of activated coconut charcoal was selected as the optimal choice for collecting tar, including its volatile organic compounds, from the synthesis gas generated during biomass gasification.

An unneglected source to ambient brown carbon and VOCs at harbor area: LNG tractor truck

The ambient air quality of harbors area in Asia is commonly more polluted compared to other continents. The airborne pollutant is directly or indirectly related to a significant impact of traffic emissions. This study for the first time assessed the impacts on brown carbon (BrC) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from in-port liquid natural gas (LNG) tractor truck at harbor areas, via conducting real-time monitoring of VOCs characteristic and sampling for ambient air at a harbor (named as W harbor) in Shanghai, China, collecting emissions of in-port LNG tractor truck and miniCast in laboratory, as well as statistics of external container diesel trucks in the port for further validation. HPLC/DAD/Q-Tof MS was adopted for sample analysis. Results showed that many CHO compounds were associated with vehicle exhausts. Among of them, aliphatic CHO compounds with low degree of unsaturation were identified as fatty acids and fatty acid methyl esters extensively existing in fuel combustion emissions. And non-aliphatic CHO compounds characterized by low O/C ratios (<0.17) identified for the harbor air came from the emissions of in-port LNG power trucks with low-speed driving and idling. The ambient average non-methane total hydrocarbons (NMHC) concentration (0.59 ppm) at W harbor was much greater than that for other areas in Shanghai. The higher ratios of toluene/benzene (3.30) and m/p-xylene/ethylbenzene (3.11) observed at W harbor implied instead of external container diesel trucks, the dominating contributing of internal LNG tractor trucks to ambient VOCs cannot be neglected. This study concluded that LNG is not as clean as it was expected. The LNG-fueled vehicles can produce strong light-absorption chromophores as well as high concentration of VOCs.

Non-destructive method to classify walnut kernel freshness from volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions using gas chromatography-differential mobility spectrometry (GC-DMS) and machine learning analysis

Analysis of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) can be an effective strategy to inspect the quality of horticultural commodities and following their degradation. In this work, we report that VOCs emitted by walnuts can be studied using gas chromatography-differential mobility spectrometry (GC-DMS), and those GC-DMS data can be analyzed to predict the rancidity of walnuts, i.e., classify walnuts into grades of freshness. Walnut kernels were assigned a class n depending on their level of freshness as determined by a peroxide assay. VOC samples were analyzed using GC-DMS. From these VOC data, a partial least square regression (PLSR) model provided a freshness prediction value m, which corresponded to the rancid class n when m=n±0.5. The PLSR model had an accuracy of 80% to predict walnut grade and demonstrated a minimal root mean squared error of 0.42 for the m response variables (representative of walnut grade) with the GC-DMS data. We also conducted gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC–MS) experiments to identify volatiles that emerged or were enhanced with more rancid walnuts. The findings of the GC–MS study of walnut VOCs align excellently with the GC-DMS study. Based on our results, we conclude that a GC-DMS device deployed with a pre-trained machine learning model can be a very effective device for classifying walnut grades in the industry.

Differences in compositions and effects of VOCs from vehicle emission detected using various methods

Vehicle exhaust and oil fuel evaporation emit volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The differences in VOC compositions and their effects determined using different methods have not been addressed sufficiently. In this study, VOC samples are obtained from single gasoline and diesel vehicle exhausts using a portable emission measurement system, from a tunnel in Yichang City, and from gasoline and diesel evaporation at gas stations. A total of 107 VOCs are analysed. The calculated VOC source profiles (based on VOC source profiles of single-vehicle type and vehicle fleet composition in the tunnel) and the tested source profiles (from a tunnel test) are compared. The results show that gasoline burning can reduce alkenes from a mass fraction of 53.1% (for evaporation) to 3.6% (for burning), as well as increase the mass fraction of alkenes from 1.3% (for diesel evaporation) to 34.0% (for diesel burning). The calculated VOC source profiles differed from the tested VOC source profiles, with a coefficient of divergence of 0.6. Ethane, ethylene, n-undecane, and n-dodecane are used to distinguish VOCs in gasoline and diesel exhausts. Cis-2-butene, 2-methylpentane, m/p-xylene, o-xylene, and n-decane can be used to separate gasoline from diesel. The xylene/ethylbenzene ratios accurately reveal the photochemical age. Gasoline burning increases health risks associated with VOCs compared with gasoline evaporation. Furthermore, it modifies the main contributor to ozone formation potential. This study is expected to facilitate refined VOC source apportionment and studies pertaining to speciated emission inventories.

Lime and odour: A preliminary investigation into the effect of hydrated lime on the volatiles emitted from human remains

The location of human remains is performed primarily through the aid of cadaver detection dogs, which rely on the malodour produced through decomposition of decaying bodies. Malefactors will attempt to conceal these putrefactive odours through chemical additions such as lime, which is also wrongly believed to accelerate decomposition and prevent the identification of the victim. Despite the frequency of lime in forensic applications, to date no research has been performed to determine its effect on the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) released during human decomposition. This research was therefore conducted to ascertain the effects of hydrated lime on the VOC profile of human remains. Two human donors were used in a field trial at the Australian Facility for Taphonomic Experimental Research (AFTER): one donor was covered with hydrated lime, and the other had no chemical additions acting as a control. VOC samples were collected over a period of 100 days and analysed using comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography coupled with time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GC×GC-TOFMS). The volatile samples were accompanied by visual observations of how decomposition progressed. The results showed that lime application decreased the rate of decomposition and decreased total carrion insect activity. Lime increased the abundance of VOCs during the fresh and bloat stages of decay, however the abundance of compounds plateaued during active and advanced decomposition and were much lower than those detected from the control donor. Despite this suppression of VOCs, the study found that dimethyl disulfide and dimethyl trisulfide, key sulfur-containing compounds, were still produced in high quantities, and can thus still be used to locate chemically altered human remains. Knowledge of the effects of lime on human decomposition can inform the training of cadaver detection dogs, and ensure a greater chance at locating victims of crimes or mass disasters.

Indoor Volatile Organic Compounds: Concentration Characteristics and Health Risk Analysis on a University Campus.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are major indoor air pollutants that contain several toxic substances. However, there are few studies on health risk assessments of indoor VOCs in China. This study aimed to determine the concentration characteristics of VOCs on college campuses by collecting VOC samples from different locations on campus during different seasons combined with the exposure times of college students in each location obtained from a questionnaire survey to assess the possible health risks. The highest total VOC concentration (254 ± 101 µg/m3) was in the dormitory. The seasonal variation of TVOC concentrations was related to the variation of emission sources in addition to temperature. Health risk assessments of VOCs were evaluated using non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risk values, represented by hazard quotient (HQ) and lifetime cancer risk (LCR), respectively. The non-carcinogenic risks at all sampling sites were within the safe range (HQ < 1). Dormitories had the highest carcinogenic risk, whereas the carcinogenic risk in the other three places was low (with LCR < 1.0 × 10-6). Moreover, 1,2-dichloroethane was identified as a possible carcinogenic risk substance in the dormitory due to its high LCR (1.95 × 10-6). This study provides basic data on health risks in different locations on campus and a basis for formulating measures to improve people's living environments.

An Overview of VOC Sampling and Detection Techniques

Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) are the key air pollutants that act as precursors to major secondary pollutants including tropospheric ozone and secondary organic aerosols (SOA) and various health issues. Therefore, there is a need to have a simple, portable, reliable sampling method to quantify VOCs. This study reviews VOC sampling techniques based on feasibility, the material used, sensors and gas chromatographic instruments. A particular highlight on VOC sensors concerning their sensitivity, detection limit, response time and robustness has also been done. Also, the study focuses on critical aspects of VOC characterisation in ambient air along with the advantages and challenges of the methods. Around 65% of researchers have used the gas chromatography-based FID technique (GC-FID) for VOC characterisation in India. The typical sampling methods used in India are sorbent tubes or cartridges, air sample bags (commonly Tedlar bags), glass air sampling units and canisters. The portable real-time method is also used. The most common sampling method is passive sampling with sorbent tubes with activated carbon. However, extensive research is required on more sophisticated and world-class sensors, sampling and detection techniques to reach safe and recommended targets.

Impacts of COVID-19's restriction measures on personal exposure to VOCs and aldehydes in Taipei City

The Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic provided an unprecedented natural experiment, that allowed us to investigate the impacts of different restrictive measures on personal exposure to specific volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and aldehydes and resulting health risks in the city. Ambient concentrations of the criteria air pollutants were also evaluated. Passive sampling for VOCs and aldehydes was conducted for graduate students and ambient air in Taipei, Taiwan, during the Level 3 warning (strict control measures) and Level 2 alert (loosened control measures) of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021–2022. Information on the daily activities of participants and on-road vehicle counts nearby the stationary sampling site during the sampling campaigns were recorded. Generalized estimating equations (GEE) with adjusted meteorological and seasonal variables were used to estimate the effects of control measures on average personal exposures to the selected air pollutants. Our results showed that ambient CO and NO2 concentrations in relation to on-road transportation emissions were significantly reduced, which led to an increase in ambient O3 concentrations. Exposure to specific VOCs (benzene, methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE), xylene, ethylbenzene, and 1,3-butadiene) associated with automobile emissions were remarkably decreased by ~40–80 % during the Level 3 warning, resulting in 42 % and 50 % reductions of total incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) and hazard index (HI), respectively, compared with the Level 2 alert. In contrast, the exposure concentration and calculated health risks in the selected population for formaldehyde increased by ~25 % on average during the Level 3 warning. Our study improves knowledge of the influence of a series of anti-COVID-19 measures on personal exposure to specific VOCs and aldehydes and its mitigations.

An Impedimetric Biosensor for Detection of Volatile Organic Compounds in Food.

The demand for a wide choice of food that is safe and palatable increases every day. Consumers do not accept off-flavors that have atypical odors resulting from internal deterioration or contamination by substances alien to the food. Odor response depends on the volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and their detection can provide information about food quality. Gas chromatography/mass spectrometry is the most powerful method available for the detection of VOC. However, it is laborious, costly, and requires the presence of a trained operator. To develop a faster analytic tool, we designed a non-Faradaic impedimetric biosensor for monitoring the presence of VOCs involved in food spoilage. The biosensor is based on the use of the pig odorant-binding protein (pOBP) as the molecular recognition element. We evaluated the affinity of pOBP for three different volatile organic compounds (1-octen-3-ol, trans-2-hexen-1-ol, and hexanal) related to food spoilage. We developed an electrochemical biosensor conducting impedimetric measurements in liquid and air samples. The impedance changes allowed us to detect each VOC sample at a minimum concentration of 0.1 μM.

Putative volatile biomarkers of bovine tuberculosis infection in breath, skin and feces of cattle.

Bovine tuberculosis (bTB) is an infectious disease with significant impact on animal health, public health and international trade. Standard bTB screening in live cattle consists in injecting tuberculin and measuring the swelling at the place of injection few days later. This procedure is expensive, time-consuming, logistically challenging, and is not conclusive before performing confirmatory tests and additional analysis. The analysis of the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted by non-invasive biological samples can provide an alternative diagnostic approach suitable for bTB screening. In the present study, we analyzed VOC samples emitted through the breath, feces and skin of 18 cows diagnosed with bTB from three farms from Romania, as well as of 27 negative cows for bTB from the same farms. Analytical studies employing gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry revealed 80 VOCs emitted through the breath, 200 VOCs released by feces, and 80 VOCs emitted through the skin. Statistical analysis of these compounds allowed the identification of 3 tentative breath VOC biomarkers (acetone; 4-methyldecane; D-limonene), 9 tentative feces VOC biomarkers (toluene; [(1,1-dimethylethyl)thio]acetic acid; alpha-thujene; camphene; phenol; o-cymene; 3-(1,1-dimethylethyl)-2,2,4,4-tetramethyl-3-pentanol; 2,5-dimethylhexane-2,5-dihydroperoxide; 2,4-di-tert-butylphenol), and 3 tentative skin VOC biomarkers (ammonia; 1-methoxy-2-propanol; toluene). The possible pathway of these volatile biomarkers is discussed.

Continuous monitoring of volatile organic compounds through sensorization. Automatic sampling during pollution/odour/nuisance episodic events

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are a highly diverse class of chemical contaminants and between 50 and 300 of them may be found in ambient air. In urbanized areas, VOCs are emitted from industrial activities, as well as from vehicle-related and combustion sources. VOCs outdoors can be detected in a broad range of concentrations, usually varying seasonally. The presence of VOCs at relatively high concentrations has been related to poor air quality, discomfort and odorous nuisances. Additionally, they can have negative health effects to the human organism. Hence, in locations where recurrent sporadic situations of high VOCs levels take place, episodic samples' evaluation is necessary instead of 24 h or longer sampling period's evaluations. The use of commercially available metal oxide semiconductor gas sensors for a continuous monitoring of VOCs concentrations in outdoor air is an interesting and innovative technology. Additionally, the use of these sensors for the activation of a VOCs sampler when episodic events of nuisance/odorous annoyance occur was successfully evaluated. The sensor activation is induced by higher VOCs concentrations from a wide number of VOC chemical families. Two sensor stations, developed at our laboratory and provided with sampling pumps, were located in the municipality of Santa Margarida i els Monjos (Catalunya, Spain) in January 2021. The stations started recording data continuously from two different types of VOCs sensors, temperature, relative humidity and pressure in 1.5-min periods. Automatic VOCs sampling was conducted, using multi-sorbent bed tubes, during the months of June–July when the sensors electronic values exceeded a set point value. Samples were analysed through TD-GC/MS. TVOC concentrations in episode samples ranged between 78-669 and 12–159 μg m−3 in Site 1 and Site 2, respectively. Although TVOC concentrations were not high in all cases, relevant concentrations of chloroform were observed, especially in Site 1, with concentrations ranging from 19 to 159 μg m−3.
