ALMA Survey of Orion Planck Galactic Cold Clumps (ALMASOP): The Warm-envelope Origin of Hot Corinos

Hot corinos are of great interest due to their richness in interstellar complex organic molecules (COMs) and the consequent potential prebiotic connection to solar-like planetary systems. Recent surveys have reported an increasing number of detected hot corinos in Class 0/I protostars; however, the relationships between their physical properties and the hot-corino signatures remain elusive. In this study, our objective is to establish a general picture of the detectability of hot corinos by identifying the origins of the hot-corino signatures in the sample of young stellar objects (YSOs) obtained from the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array Survey of Orion Planck Galactic Cold Clumps project. We apply spectral energy distribution modeling to our sample and identify the physical parameters of the modeled YSOs directly, linking the detection of hot-corino signatures to the envelope properties of the YSOs. Imaging simulations of the methanol emission further support this scenario. We therefore posit that the observed COM emission originates from the warm inner envelopes of the sample YSOs, based on both the warm region size and the envelope density profile. The former is governed by the source luminosity and is additionally affected by the disk and cavity properties, while the latter is related to the evolutionary stages. This scenario provides a framework for detecting hot-corino signatures toward luminous Class 0 YSOs, with fewer detections being observed toward similarly luminous Class I sources.

Properties of Star Formation of the Large Magellanic Cloud As Probed by Young Stellar Objects

We perform a systematic study of the evolutionary stages and stellar masses of young stellar objects (YSOs) in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) to investigate the properties of star formation in the galaxy. There are 4825 sources in our YSO sample, which are constructed by combining the previous studies identifying YSOs in the LMC. Spectral energy distributions of the YSOs from optical to infrared wavelengths were fitted with a model consisting of stellar, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon, and dust emissions. We utilize the stellar-to-dust luminosity ratios thus derived to study the evolutionary stages of the sources; younger YSOs are expected to show lower stellar-to-dust luminosity ratios. We find that most of the YSOs are associated with the interstellar gas across the galaxy, which are younger with more gas, suggesting that more recent star formation is associated with larger amounts of the interstellar medium (ISM). N157 shows a hint of higher stellar-to-dust luminosity ratios between active star-forming regions in the LMC, suggesting that recent star formation in N157 is possibly in later evolutionary stages. We also find that the stellar mass function tends to be bottom-heavy in supergiant shells (SGSs), indicating that gas compression by SGSs may be ineffective in compressing the ISM enough to trigger massive star formation. There is no significant difference in the stellar mass function between YSOs likely associated with the interface between colliding SGSs and those with a single SGS, suggesting that gas compression by collisions between SGSs may also be ineffective for massive star formation.

A Catalog of Young Stellar Objects from the LAMOST and ZTF Surveys

As astronomical data sets become too large for traditional analysis approaches, more machine-learning algorithms are employed in astronomy. A wealth of light variation data have been accumulated, which provide rich samples for astronomers to study variable stars. Facing the challenge of big data, this article takes the classification of variable and transient objects observed by the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) as the main goal, and a self-paced ensemble (SPE) imbalanced-learning classifier is constructed to separate different classes. The performance of the classifier reveals that SPE is better than a traditional imbalanced-learning algorithm for the minority classes. In our work, the SPE classifier is satisfactory for young stellar objects (YSOs), and the completeness (recall) of YSOs is enhanced to 91%. As a result, 868,371 ZTF sources are classified into 15 classes by this classifier, which contains 8210 YSO candidates (YSO_prob ≥ 0.70). In order to further identify YSO candidates, these candidates are crossmatched with LAMOST DR9. Finally, 833 candidates are observed by LAMOST, among them 379 objects that are known YSOs in SIMBAD. For the remaining objects with good-quality LAMOST spectra, we visually check their spectral characteristics, and 238 objects are newly confirmed YSOs. These newfound YSOs supplement the present YSO sample, and other YSO candidates may be used for follow-up observation, which is useful for characterizing YSOs, finding more YSOs, and then giving a better stellar evolution model in the future. The classified ZTF sources by SPE provide reference to the study of variables and transients.

Modelling simultaneous CoRoT and Spitzer light curves: the impact of bending waves in the inner disc

ABSTRACT We present a physical interpretation of the amplitude of light curves of young stellar objects (YSOs) simultaneously observed in the infrared with the Spitzer Space Telescope and in the optical with the CoRoT satellite. The modelled objects come from a sample of YSOs in the star forming region NGC 2264, and we focus on a subsample showing periodic dips in their CoRoT light curves. The model includes emission and stellar occultation caused by a warp at the inner edge of the disc. In order to fit the observed fluxes, we add a contribution coming from the inner disc. We find that the disc flux signal has the same periodicity as the stellar rotation, with a phase offset between the stellar and the disc signal of half the period, that is, the peak of the former coincides with the minimum of the latter. This behaviour is consistent with MHD simulations where a bending wave appears opposite to the warp formed at the base of the magnetospheric stream, which is rotating with the stellar rotation period. This evidence highlights the importance of infrared observations to complement the information extracted from optical light curves to be able to characterize structures at the inner disc.

Photometric and spectroscopic monitoring of YSOs in nearby star-forming regions – I. Eruptive YSOs

ABSTRACT Mid-infrared (mid-IR) variability in young stellar objects (YSOs) is driven by several physical mechanisms, which produce a variety of amplitudes and light-curve shapes. One of these mechanisms, variable disc accretion, is predicted by models of episodic accretion to drive secular variability, including in the mid-IR. Because the largest accretion bursts are rare, adding new objects to the YSO eruptive variable class aids our understanding of the episodic accretion phenomenon and its possible impact on stellar and planetary formation. A previous analysis of 6.5 yr of NeoWISE light curves (3–5 μm) of ∼7000 nearby YSOs found an increase in the fraction of variability and variability amplitude for objects at younger stages of evolution. To help interpret these light curves, we have obtained low- and high-resolution near-IR spectra of 78 objects from this sample of YSOs. In this work, we present the analysis of nine nearby YSOs (d<1 kpc) that show the characteristics of known classes of eruptive variable YSOs. We find one FU Orionis (FUor)-like source, one EX Lupi type object, and six YSOs with mixed characteristics or V1647 Ori like objects. The varied characteristics observed in our sample are consistent with recent discoveries of eruptive YSOs. We discuss how a wide range in YSO outburst parameters (central mass, maximum accretion rate during outburst, evolutionary stage, and/or instability leading to the outburst) may play a significant role in the observed spectrophotometric properties of YSO outbursts.

Weather forecast of the Milky Way: shear and stellar feedback determine the lives of Galactic-scale filaments

ABSTRACT The interstellar medium (ISM) is an inseparable part of the Milky Way ecosystem whose evolutionary history remains a challenging question. We trace the evolution of the molecular ISM using a sample of young stellar objects (YSO) association–molecular cloud complex (YSO–MC complex). We derive their three-dimensional (3D) velocities by combining the Gaia astrometric measurements of the YSO associations and the CO observations of the associated molecular clouds. Based on the 3D velocities, we simulate the motions of the YSO–MC complexes in the Galactic potential and forecast the ISM evolution by tracing the motions of the individual complexes, and reveal the roles of shear and stellar feedback in determining ISM evolution: Galactic shear stretches Galactic-scale molecular cloud complexes, such as the G120 Complex, into Galactic-scale filaments, and it also contributes to the destruction of the filaments; while stellar feedback creates interconnected superbubbles whose expansion injects peculiar velocities into the ISM. The Galactic-scale molecular gas clumps are often precursors of the filaments and the Galactic-scale filaments are transient structures under a constant stretch by shear. This evolutionary sequence sets a foundation to interpret other gas structures.

Kinematics of the molecular interstellar medium probed by Gaia: steep velocity dispersion–size relation, isotropic turbulence, and location-dependent energy dissipation

ABSTRACT The evolution of the molecular interstellar medium is controlled by processes such as turbulence, gravity, stellar feedback, and Galactic shear. AL a part of the ISM-6D project, using Gaia astrometric measurements towards a sample of young stellar objects (YSOs), we study the morphology and kinematic structure of the associated molecular gas. We identify 150 YSO associations with distance $d \lesssim 3 \,\,\rm kpc$. The YSO associations are elongated, with a median aspect ratio of 1.97, and are oriented parallel to the disc mid-plane, with a median angle of 30°. The turbulence in the molecular clouds as probed by the YSOs is isotropic, and the velocity dispersions are related to the sizes by σv, 2D = 0.74 (r/pc)0.67 (km s−1) . The slope is on the steeper side, yet consistent with previous measurements. The energy dissipation rate of turbulence $\dot{\epsilon } = \sigma _{v,{\rm 3D}}^3 /L$ decreases with the Galactocentric distance, with a gradient of 0.2 $\rm dex \,\, kpc^{-1}$, which can be explained if turbulence is driven by cloud collisions. In this scenario, the clouds located in the inner Galaxy have higher chances to accrete smaller clouds and are more turbulent. Although the density structures of the complexes are anisotropic, the turbulence is consistent with being isotropic. If the alignment between density structures and the Galactic-disc mid-plane is due to shear, we expect $t_{\rm cloud} \gtrsim t_{\rm shear}\approx 30\,\, \rm Myr$. This cloud lifetime is longer than the turbulence crossing time, and a continuous energy injection is required to maintain the turbulence.

The GRAVITY young stellar object survey

Context. T Tauri stars are surrounded by dust and gas disks. As material reservoirs from which matter is accreted onto the central star and planets are built, these protoplanetary disks play a central role in star and planet formation. Aims. We aim at spatially resolving at sub-astronomical unit (sub-au) scales the innermost regions of the protoplanetary disks around a sample of T Tauri stars to better understand their morphology and composition. Methods. Thanks to the sensitivity and the better spatial frequency coverage of the GRAVITY instrument of the Very Large Telescope Interferometer, we extended our homogeneous data set of 27 Herbig stars and collected near-infrared K-band interferometric observations of 17 T Tauri stars, spanning effective temperatures and luminosities in the ranges of ~4000–6000 K and ~0.4–10 L⊙, respectively. We focus on the continuum emission and develop semi-physical geometrical models to fit the interferometric data and search for trends between the properties of the disk and the central star. Results. As for those of their more massive counterparts, the Herbig Ae/Be stars, the best-fit models of the inner rim of the T Tauri disks correspond to wide rings. The GRAVITY measurements extend the radius-luminosity relation toward the smallest luminosities (0.4–10 L⊙). As observed previously, in this range of luminosities, the R ∝ L1∕2 trend line is no longer valid, and the K-band sizes measured with GRAVITY appear to be larger than the predicted sizes derived from sublimation radius computation. We do not see a clear correlation between the K-band half-flux radius and the mass accretion rate onto the central star. Besides, having magnetic truncation radii in agreement with the K-band GRAVITY sizes would require magnetic fields as strong as a few kG, which should have been detected, suggesting that accretion is not the main process governing the location of the half-flux radius of the inner dusty disk. The GRAVITY measurements agree with models that take into account the scattered light, which could be as important as thermal emission in the K band for these cool stars. The N-to-K band size ratio may be a proxy for disentangling disks with silicate features in emission from disks with weak and/or in absorption silicate features (i.e., disks with depleted inner regions and/or with large gaps). The GRAVITY data also provide inclinations and position angles of the inner disks. When compared to those of the outer disks derived from ALMA images of nine objects of our sample, we detect clear misalignments between both disks for four objects. Conclusions. The combination of improved data quality with a significant and homogeneous sample of young stellar objects allows us to revisit the pioneering works done on the protoplanetary disks by K-band interferometry and to test inner disk physics such as the inner rim morphology and location.

Pulsational instability of pre-main-sequence models from accreting protostars

Context. The picture of pre-main-sequence evolution is often simplified by the application of classical initial models. Such models have large initial radii and sufficient uniform contraction to make them fully convective, however, real stars are born as small protostellar seeds in collapsing molecular clouds and obtain their final mass by means of accretion. Aims. We aim to constrain the input physics of accretion on protostellar seeds with the observed spectroscopic parameters and stellar pulsations of young stellar objects and pre-main-sequence stars. Methods. We conducted a literature search for spectroscopic samples of young stellar objects and pre-main-sequence stars, including all previously known pulsators. The sample size of pulsating pre-main-sequence stars was increased by analysing TESS observations and presenting additional discoveries in the CoRoT data. We employed Modules for Experiments in Stellar Astrophysics and GYRE to calculate evolutionary tracks of accreting protostellar seeds in a constant accretion scenario, the subsequent pre-main-sequence evolution, and their pulsation properties. We then compared the results with the observations to constrain the input physics. Results. We discuss 16 formerly unknown pulsating pre-main-sequence stars and candidates that are of any of the following type: slowly pulsating B-stars, δ Scuti, γ Doradus, or a δ Scuti - γ Doradus hybrid type. We find that evolutionary tracks with a mass accretion rate of 5 × 10−6 M⊙ yr−1 and a fraction of injected accretion energy of β = 0.1 provide the best results for enveloping the spectroscopic parameters of pre-main-sequence stars in the constant accretion scenario. The calculated instability regions constrain the atmospheric boundary conditions to Eddington Gray atmospheres. Here, we discuss the future potential for additional constraints by instability regions that are dependent on radial order. Finally, we present a possible candidate star for pulsations in M-type young stellar objects. Conclusions. We show that evolutionary calculations of accreting protostellar seeds match the observed spectroscopic parameters of pre-main-sequence stars. Future observations that will allow for the identification of radial orders in particular will present opportunities for additional constraints.

Ancillary science with Ariel: feasibility and scientific potential of young stellar object observations

To investigate the feasibility of ancillary target observations with ESA’s Ariel mission, we compiled a list of potentially interesting young stars: FUors, systems harbouring extreme debris discs and a larger sample of young stellar objects showing strong near/mid-infrared excess. These objects can be observed as additional targets in the waiting times between the scheduled exoplanet transit and occultation observations. After analyzing the schedule for Ariel an algorithm was constructed to find the optimal target to be observed in each gap. The selection was mainly based on the slew and stabilization time needed to observe the selected YSO, but it also incorporated the scientific importance of the targets and whether they have already been sufficiently measured. After acquiring an adequately large sample of simulation data, it was concluded that approximately 99.2% of the available – at least one hour long – gaps could be used effectively. With an average slewing and stabilization time of about 16.7 minutes between scheduled exoplanet transits and ancillary targets, this corresponds to an additional 2881 ± 56 hours of active data gathering. When this additional time is used to observe our selected 200 ancillary targets, a typical signal-to-noise ratio of sim 10^{4} can be achieved along the whole spectral window covered by Ariel.

Protostellar Outflows at the EarliesT Stages (POETS)

Context. 22 GHz water masers are the most intense and widespread masers in star-forming regions. They are commonly associated with protostellar winds and jets emerging from low- and high-mass young stellar objects (YSO). Aims. We wish to perform for the first time a statistical study of the location and motion of individual water maser cloudlets, characterized by typical sizes that are within a few au, with respect to the weak radio thermal emission from YSOs. Methods. For this purpose, we have been carrying out the Protostellar Outflows at the EarliesT Stages survey of a sample (38) of high-mass YSOs. The 22 GHz water maser positions and three-dimensional (3D) velocities were determined through multi-epoch Very Long Baseline Array observations with accuracies of a few milliarcsec (mas) and a few km s−1, respectively. The position of the ionized core of the protostellar wind, marking the YSO, was determined through sensitive radio continuum, multi-frequency Jansky Very Large Array observations with a typical error of ≈20 mas. Results. The statistic of the separation of the water masers from the radio continuum shows that 84% of the masers are found within 1000 au from the YSO and 45% of them are within 200 au. Therefore, we can conclude that the 22 GHz water masers are a reliable proxy for locating the position of the YSO. The distribution of maser luminosity is strongly peaked towards low values, indicating that about half of the maser population is still undetected with the current Very Long Baseline Interferometry detection thresholds of 50–100 mJy beam−1. Next-generation, sensitive (at the nJy level) radio interferometers will have the capability to exploit these weak masers for an improved sampling of the velocity and magnetic fields around the YSOs. The average direction of the water maser proper motions provides a statistically-significant estimate for the orientation of the jet emitted by the YSO: 55% of the maser proper motions are directed on the sky within an angle of 30° from the jet axis. Finally, we show that our measurements of 3D maser velocities statistically support models in which water maser emission arises from planar shocks with propagation direction close to the plane of the sky.

Stellar Cores in the Sh 2-305 H ii Region

Abstract Using our deep optical and near-infrared photometry along with multiwavelength archival data, we here present a detailed study of the Galactic H ii region Sh 2-305 to understand the star/star-cluster formation. On the basis of excess infrared emission, we have identified 116 young stellar objects (YSOs) within a field of view of ∼18.′5 × 18.′5 around Sh 2-305. The average age, mass, and extinction (A V ) for this sample of YSOs are 1.8 Myr, 2.9 M ⊙, and 7.1 mag, respectively. The density distribution of stellar sources along with minimal spanning tree calculations on the location of YSOs reveals at least three stellar subclusterings in Sh 2-305. One cluster is seen toward the center (i.e., Mayer 3), while the other two are distributed toward the north and south directions. Two massive O-type stars (VM2 and VM4; ages ∼5 Myr) are located at the center of the Sh 2-305 H ii region. The analysis of the infrared and radio maps traces the photon-dominant regions (PDRs) in Sh 2-305. The association of the younger generation of stars with the PDRs is also investigated in Sh 2-305. This result suggests that these two massive stars might have influenced the star formation history in Sh 2-305. This argument is also supported by the calculation of various pressures driven by massive stars, the slope of the mass function/K-band luminosity function, star formation efficiency, fraction of Class i sources, and mass of the dense gas toward the subclusterings in Sh 2-305.

A 6.7 GHz Methanol Maser Survey. II. Low Galactic Latitudes

Abstract We report the results of our systematic survey for Galactic 6.7 GHz Class II CH3OH maser emission toward a sample of young stellar objects. The survey was conducted with the Shanghai Tianma Radio Telescope (TMRT). The sample consists of 3348 sources selected from the all-sky Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) point-source catalog. We discussed the selection criteria in detail and the detection results of those at high Galactic latitudes (i.e., ) in a previous paper (Yang et al. 2017). Here, we present the results from the survey of those at low Galactic latitudes, i.e., . Of 1875 selected WISE point sources, 291 positions that were actually associated with 224 sources that were detected with CH3OH maser emission. Among them, 32 are newly detected. A majority of the newly detected sources are associated with bright WISE sources. The majority of the detected sources (209/224 = 93.3%) are quite close to the Galactic Plane ( ) and lie on the inner spiral arms with positive local standard of rest velocities. The detection rate and the color–color distribution of our detection are all matched with our anticipation. Combining with detections from previous surveys, we compile a catalog of 1085 sources with 6.7 GHz CH3OH maser emission in our Galaxy.

A survey for variable young stars with small telescopes: First results from HOYS-CAPS

Variability in Young Stellar Objects (YSOs) is one of their primary characteristics. Long-term, multi-filter, high-cadence monitoring of large YSO samples is the key to understand the partly unusual light-curves that many of these objects show. Here we introduce and present the first results of the HOYS-CAPS citizen science project which aims to perform such monitoring for nearby (d<1kpc) and young (age<10Myr) clusters and star forming regions, visible from the northern hemisphere, with small telescopes. We have identified and characterised 466 variable (413 confirmed young) stars in 8 young, nearby clusters. All sources vary by at least 0.2mag in V, have been observed at least 15 times in V, R and I in the same night over a period of about 2yrs and have a Stetson index of larger than 1. This is one of the largest samples of variable YSOs observed over such a time-span and cadence in multiple filters. About two thirds of our sample are classical T-Tauri stars, while the rest are objects with depleted or transition disks. Objects characterised as bursters show by far the highest variability. Dippers and objects whose variability is dominated by occultations from normal interstellar dust or dust with larger grains (or opaque material) have smaller amplitudes. We have established a hierarchical clustering algorithm based on the light-curve properties which allows the identification of the YSOs with the most unusual behaviour, and to group sources with similar properties. We discuss in detail the light-curves of the unusual objects V2492Cyg, V350Cep and 2MASSJ21383981+5708470.

The APOGEE-2 Survey of the Orion Star-forming Complex. I. Target Selection and Validation with Early Observations

Abstract The Orion Star-forming Complex (OSFC) is a central target for the APOGEE-2 Young Cluster Survey. Existing membership catalogs span limited portions of the OSFC, reflecting the difficulty of selecting targets homogeneously across this extended, highly structured region. We have used data from wide-field photometric surveys to produce a less biased parent sample of young stellar objects (YSOs) with infrared (IR) excesses indicative of warm circumstellar material or photometric variability at optical wavelengths across the full 420 square degree extent of the OSFC. When restricted to YSO candidates with H &lt; 12.4, to ensure S/N ∼ 100 for a six-visit source, this uniformly selected sample includes 1307 IR excess sources selected using criteria vetted by Koenig &amp; Liesawitz (2014) and 990 optical variables identified in the Pan-STARRS1 3π survey: 319 sources exhibit both optical variability and evidence of circumstellar disks through IR excess. Objects from this uniformly selected sample received the highest priority for targeting, but required fewer than half of the fibers on each APOGEE-2 plate. We filled the remaining fibers with previously confirmed and new color–magnitude selected candidate OSFC members. Radial velocity measurements from APOGEE-1 and new APOGEE-2 observations taken in the survey’s first year indicate that ∼90% of the uniformly selected targets have radial velocities consistent with Orion membership. The APOGEE-2 Orion survey will include &gt;1100 bona fide YSOs whose uniform selection function will provide a robust sample for comparative analyses of the stellar populations and properties across all sub-regions of Orion.

K-band integral field spectroscopy and optical spectroscopy of massive young stellar objects in the Small Magellanic Cloud

We present $K$-band integral field spectroscopic observations towards 17 massive young stellar objects (YSOs) in the low metallicity Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) and two YSO candidates in the compact H ii regions N81 and N88 A (also in the SMC). These sources, originally identified using $Spitzer$ photometry and/or spectroscopy, have been resolved into 29 $K$-band continuum sources. By comparing Br$\gamma$ emission luminosities with those presented for a Galactic sample of massive YSOs, we find tentative evidence for increased accretion rates in the SMC. Around half of our targets exhibit emission line (Br$\gamma$, He i and H$_2$) morphologies which extend significantly beyond the continuum source and we have mapped both the emission morphologies and the radial velocity fields. This analysis also reveals evidence for the existence of ionized low density regions in the centre outflows from massive YSOs. Additionally we present an analysis of optical spectra towards a similar sample of massive YSOs in the SMC, revealing that the optical emission is photo-excited and originates near the outer edges of molecular clouds, and is therefore consistent with a high mean-free path of UV photons in the interstellar medium (ISM) of the SMC. Finally, we discuss the sample of YSOs in an evolutionary context incorporating the results of previous infrared and radio observations, as well as the near-infrared and optical observations presented in this work. Our spectroscopic analysis in both the $K$-band and the optical regimes, combined with previously obtained infrared and radio data, exposes differences between properties of massive YSOs in our own Galaxy and the SMC, including tracers of accretion, discs and YSO--ISM interactions.

A multiwavelength investigation of the H ii region S311: young stellar population and star formation

We present a multiwavelength investigation of the young stellar population and star formation activities around the \hii region Sharpless 311. Using our deep near-infrared observations and archival {\it Spitzer}-IRAC observations, we have detected a total of 125 young stellar objects (YSOs) in an area of $\sim$86 arcmin$^2$. The YSOs sample include 8 Class I and 117 Class II candidate YSOs. The mass completeness of the identified YSOs sample is estimated to be 1.0 \msun. The ages and masses of the majority of the candidate YSOs are estimated to be in the range of $\sim$0.1$-$5 Myr and $\sim$0.3$-$6 \msun, respectively. The 8 \mum image of S311 displays an approximately spherical cavity around the ionizing source which is possibly created due to the expansion of the \hii region. The spatial distribution of the candidate YSOs reveals that a significant number of them are distributed systematically along the 8 $\mu$m emission with a majority clustered around the eastern border of the \hii region. Four clumps/compact \hii regions are detected in the radio continuum observations at 1280 MHz, which might have been formed during the expansion of the \hii region. The estimated dynamical age of the region, main-sequence lifetime of the ionizing source, the spatial distribution and ages of the candidate YSOs indicate triggered star formation in the complex.

Outflow structure within 1000 au of high-mass YSOs

Context. In high-mass (≥7 M ⊙ ) star formation (SF) studies, high-angular resolution is crucial for resolving individual protostellar outflows (and possibly accretion disks) from the complex contribution of nearby (high- and low-mass) young stellar objects (YSO). Previous interferometric studies have focused mainly on single objects.Aims. A sensitive survey at high angular resolution is required to investigate outflow processes in a statistically significant sample of high-mass YSOs and on spatial scales relevant to testing theories. Methods. We selected a sample of 40 high-mass YSOs from water masers observed within the BeSSeL Survey. We investigated the 3D velocity and spatial structures of the molecular component of massive outflows at milli-arcsecond angular resolution using multi-epoch Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) observations of 22 GHz water masers. We also characterize the ionized component of the flows using deep images of the radio continuum emission with resolutions of ~0. 2, at 6, 13, and 22 GHz with the Jansky Very Large Array (JVLA). Results. We report the first results obtained for a subset of 11 objects from the sample. The water maser measurements provide us with a very accurate description of the molecular gas kinematics. This in turn enables us to estimate the momentum rate of individual outflows, varying in the range 10-3 –100 M ⊙ yr-1 km s-1 , among the highest values reported in the literature. In all the observed objects, the continuum emission at 13 and 22 GHz has a compact structure, with its position coincident with that of the water masers. The 6 GHz continuum consists of either compact components (mostly well aligned with the 13 and/or 22 GHz sources) or extended emission (either highly elongated or approximately spherical), which can be offset by up to a few arcseconds from the water masers. The unresolved continuum emission associated with the water masers likely points to the YSO location. The comparison of the radio continuum morphology to the maser spatial and 3D velocity distribution shows that five out of elevenhigh-mass YSOs emit a collimated outflow, with a flow semi-opening angle in the range 10°–30°. The remaining six sources present a more complicated relationship between the geometry of the radio continuum and water maser velocity pattern; therefore, no firm conclusions can be drawn regarding their outflow structure. In two sources, the 6 GHz continuum emission shows a highly elongated structure with a negative spectral index down to −1.2. We interpret this finding in terms of synchrotron emission from relativistic electrons accelerated in strong shocks, which indicates that non-thermal continuum emission could be common in high-mass protostellar jets. The Lyman continua derived from bolometric luminosities always exceed those obtained from the radio luminosities.Conclusions. These first results suggest that collimated outflows or jets can be common in high-mass YSOs and, in a couple of cases, provide hints that magnetic fields could be important in driving these jets. To draw firmer conclusions, however, we await completion of the analysis for the entire sample of 40 high-mass YSOs.

Characterising the Protostellar Population of the Magellanic Clouds with VLT/SINFONI

AbstractAt distances of ~50 kpc and ~60 kpc for the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) and Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) respectively the Magellanic Clouds present us with a unique opportunity to study star formation in environments outside our own galaxy. Through Spitzer and Herschel photometry and spectroscopy, samples of Young Stellar Objects (YSOs) have been selected and spectroscpically confirmed in the Magellanic Clouds. Here we present some of the key results of our SINFONI K-band observations towards massive YSOs in the Magellanic Clouds. We resolve a number of Spitzer sources into multiple, previously unresolved, components and our analysis of emission lines suggest higher accretion rates and different disc properties compared with massive YSOs in the Milky Way.
