Comparison of Effectiveness and Safety of Microwave Ablation of Colorectal Liver Metastases Adjacent versus Nonadjacent to the Diaphragm

PurposeTo compare the effectiveness and safety of percutaneous microwave ablation (MWA) for colorectal liver metastasis (CLM) adjacent versus nonadjacent to the diaphragm. Materials and MethodsThis was a retrospective analysis of a prospectively created MWA database, from 2 prospective clinical trials for patients with CLM treated in a single tertiary center from 2012 to 2023. CLM adjacent to the diaphragm was defined as a tumor located <1 cm from the diaphragm. Minimal ablation margin (MM) was calculated with 3-dimensional software using postablation contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT). Adverse events were assessed with Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events (CTCAE) v5.0 classification for 6 months. ResultsTwo hundred nine CLMs underwent 191 MWA sessions in 143 patients. Mean tumor diameter was 1.52 cm (SD ± 0.53). Eighty-three of 209 (39.7%) CLMs were adjacent to the diaphragm. There was no difference in local tumor progression–free survival (LTPFS) between CLMs adjacent and nonadjacent to the diaphragm (hazard ratio [HR], 0.65; 95% CI, 0.37–1.16; P = .15). MMs of 5–10 mm and >10 mm were documented in 49.3% versus 46.8% (P = .83) and 21.6% versus 12.6% (P = .16) for CLMs adjacent versus nonadjacent to the diaphragm, respectively. Twelve-month LTPFS was similar between groups (HR, 0.65; 95% CI, 0.37–1.16; P = .15) without local tumor progression for MM of >10 mm. There were 3 Grade IV adverse events: 1 diaphragmatic perforation, 1 liver abscess, and 1 biloma. Pneumothorax was associated with location adjacent to the diaphragm (P < .001) and transpulmonary approach (P < .001). Median length of hospital stay was 2 days (interquartile range [IQR], 1–3 days) for patients who needed thoracostomy (n = 20, 9.6%) compared with 1 day (IQR, 1–8 days) for those who did not, without long-term sequelae. ConclusionsMWA of CLM adjacent to the diaphragm is effective and safe, without difference in success and 12-month LTPFS. Pneumothorax was associated with location adjacent to the diaphragm and thoracostomy that resulted in longer hospitalization without long-term sequelae.

Efficacy and safety of percutaneous microwave ablation for adenomyosis in the posterior uterine wall.

To evaluate the efficacy and safety of percutaneous microwave ablation (PMWA) for treating adenomyosis in the posterior uterine wall. Thirty-six patients with symptomatic adenomyosis in the posterior uterine wall who had been subjected to PMWA were retrospectively enrolled in this study. 20 patients who had no ideal transabdominal puncture path due to the retroverted or retroflexed uterine position were treated with PMWA combined with Yu's uteropexy (Group 1). The other 16 patients were treated with PMWA only (Group 2). The non-perfused volume (NPV) ratio, symptomatic relief rate, recurrence rate, changes in clinical symptom scores, economic cost, and complications were compared. The mean NPV ratio for the 36 patients was 90.2±18.3%, and the percentage of patients who obtained complete relief of dysmenorrhea and menorrhagia was 81.3% (26/32), and 69.6% (16/23) respectively. The recurrence rate was 11.1% (4/36). No major complication was observed. Minor complications included lower abdominal pain, fever, vaginal discharge, nausea, and/or vomiting after ablation, with incidences of 55.6%, 41.7%, 47.2%, and 19.4% respectively. Subgroup analysis showed no significant difference in the median value of NPV ratio, symptomatic relief rate of dysmenorrhea and menorrhagia, changes in clinical symptom scores, recurrence rate and economic cost between the two groups (all p > 0.05). PMWA is an effective and safe treatment for adenomyosis in the posterior uterine wall. This study focused on the ultrasound-guided PMWA treatment for adenomyosis in the posterior uterine wall. Yu's uteropexy, a new ancillary technique allowing safe PMWA for deep posterior uterine wall lesions in retroverted uterus, expanded the indications of PMWA for symptomatic adenomyosis.

Optimal treatment options for uterine submucosal fibroids: Percutaneous microwave ablation versus transcervical resection of myoma.

To compare the efficacy and safety of percutaneous microwave ablation (PMWA) and transcervical resection of myoma (TCRM) for submucosal fibroids. From January 2019 to January 2021, we conducted a randomized controlled study involving patients with symptomatic uterine submucosal fibroids. Questionnaires were also used to measure the uterine fibroid symptom (UFS) scores and quality of life (QoL) scores before and after treatment at 3, 6, and 12 months. Outcomes, adverse events, hemoglobin recovery, and submucosal fibroid volume of both groups were also compared. Operation time, amount of bleeding, hospital stay time, and occurrence of complications were compared in groups with fibroids of different lengths. Follow-up after surgery showed that UFS scores at 3, 6, and 12 months were significantly lower in each group, while QoL scores increased significantly. For fibroids less than 3cm, surgical time was 34.2 ± 9.9min, incidence of perioperative complications was 4.2%, and both decreased significantly, compared to the surgical time of the PMWA group (40.0 ± 8.1min) and incidence of perioperative complications (24%; p < .05 for both). For uterine submucosal fibroids >5cm, the operation time in the PMWA group was 92.7 ± 16.0min, intraoperative bleeding volume was 22.7 ± 6.4mL, and hospital stay was 2.7 ± 1.1 days, which were significantly less than the procedural time (107 ± 11.9min), intraoperative bleeding loss (45.9 ± 12.8mL), and length of hospital stay (5.0 ± 1.1 days) in the TCRM group. The differences were statistically significant (p < .05). PMWA and TCRM were both effective treatments for uterine submucosal fibroids. For fibroids shorter than 3cm in length, especially pedicled submucosal fibroids, TCRM has absolute advantages; however, for uterine submucosal fibroids >5cm, PMWA avoids perioperative complications, such as uterine perforation, water poisoning syndrome, and the need for repeat surgery, and is considered the preferred mode of treatment. Therefore, personalized treatment should be used for different patients with uterine submucosal fibroids.

Comparison of percutaneous microwave ablation with radiofrequency ablation for hepatocellular carcinoma adjacent to major vessels: A retrospective study.

To compare the therapeutic efficacy and safety of percutaneous microwave ablation (MWA) with those of percutaneous radiofrequency ablation (RFA) for the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) adjacent to major vessels. From January 2010 to April 2011, 78 patients with a single nodule, no >5 cm, adjacent to major vessels were enrolled in this study. Forty-four patients (forty-one men, three women; age range, 33-72 years) treated by MWA were compared with thirty-four patients (thirty-one men, three women; age range, 33-75 years) treated by RFA. Local tumor progression rate, overall survival rate, and disease-free survival rate were calculated using the Kaplan-Meier method, and differences between groups were estimated by log-rank test. No death related to treatment occurred in the two groups. The 1-, 2-, and 3-year local tumor progression rates were 6.8%, 11.4%, and 15.9%, respectively, in the microwave group versus 17.6%, 20.6%, and 20.6%, respectively in the radiofrequency group (P = 0.544). The rates of major complications associated with microwave and RFA were 2.3% (1/44) versus 0% (0/34; P = 0.376). The microwave group's 1-, 2-, and 3-year disease-free survival rates were 72.7%, 65.9%, and 51.8%, respectively, and those in the radiofrequency were 58.8%, 52.9%, and 47.1%, respectively (P = 0.471). The microwave group's 1-, 2-, and 3-year overall survival rates were 93.2%, 90.9%, and 83.6%, respectively, and those in the radiofrequency group were 91.2%, 88.2%, and 82.4%, respectively (P = 0.808) There was no significant difference in local tumor progression, complications related to treatment, and long-term results between the two modalities. The incidence of peritumoral structure damage on image scan was significantly higher in the microwave group than in the RFA group (P = 0.025). Both RFA and MWA are safe and effective techniques for HCC adjacent to major vessels and have the same clinical value.

A study of microwave ablation for small cell lung cancer.

To reveal the survival and safety of percutaneous microwave ablation (MWA) combined with chemoradiotherapy (CRT) in treating small cell lung cancer (SCLC). Clinical data of 48 SCLC patients who underwent MWA were retrospectively collected; survival and incidence of major complications were analyzed. Totally, 48 SCLC patients underwent 51 MWA procedures. The median overall survival (OS) for all SCLC was 27.0 months (95% confidence interval 22.4-31.6 months). The OS of limited-stage (LS-SCLC) was longer than the extensive-stage (ES-SCLC) (median 48.0 months vs. 25.0 months, P = 0.022). The OS of SCLC with tumor diameter ≤3.0 cm was longer than that of tumor diameter >3.0 cm (median 48.0 months vs. 27.0 months, P = 0.041). For LS-SCLC, the 1-, 2-, 3-, and 5-year survival rate was 91.67%, 72.22%, 66.67%, and 61.11%, respectively. For ES-SCLC, the 1-, 2-, and 3-year survival rates were 83.33%, 50.0%, and 8.33%. Major complications included pneumothorax needing tube placement (29.4%), rarely arrhythmia (2.0%), empyema (2.0%), pulmonary fungal infection (2.0%), and shingles (2.0%). For SCLC patients, who received MWA combined with CRT, OS of LS-SCLC and tumor diameter ≤3.0 cm was better than that of the ES-SCLC and tumor diameter >3.0 cm. For inoperable SCLC, MWA was safe.

Efficacy and safety of percutaneous microwave ablation for hepatocellular carcinomas

Tumor location is a critical factor for determining technical success and local recurrence following percutaneous ablation of hepatocellular carcinomas (HCC). The purpose of this retrospective study was to evaluate the safety and outcome measures of percutaneous microwave ablation (pMWA) for HCCs <4 cm in difficult locations. Retrospective review included 81 patients who underwent pMWA for HCCs <4 cm. Fourty-three patients (30 males and 13 females; mean age, 61 years) with 53 HCCs located near the diaphragm, heart, gallbladder, kidney, gastrointestinal tract, large vessel and exophytic location were included under difficult location group. Thirty-eight patients (29 males and nine females; mean age, 60 years) with 48 HCCs in other locations were included under control group. Baseline demographics were recorded. Technical efficacy, local tumor progression (LTP), and complication rates were evaluated. Mean follow-up period was 3.4 months (range 1-7). There was no major complication in both the groups; two patients had a mild perihepatic hemorrhage in the difficult location group which was managed conservatively. There was no difference between the groups in the overall technical efficacy rate (84.9% vs 91.7%, p = 0.294), LTP rate (4.4% vs 2.2%. p = 0.57) or complication rate (4.6% vs 0%, p = 0.177). Our data suggest that there is no significant difference in technical efficacy, LTP or complication rates for MWA in both difficult and normal locations. With proper patient selection, pre-procedural planning and appropriate technique, pMWA is feasible, safe, and effective for small HCCs in difficult location with an acceptable range of complications.

Comparison between microwave ablation and radiofrequency ablation for treating symptomatic uterine adenomyosis

Objectives To prospectively compare the effectiveness and safety of percutaneous microwave ablation (PMWA) and ultrasound-guided radiofrequency ablation (USgRFA) for treating symptomatic uterine adenomyosis. Methods One hundred and thirty-three women with symptomatic uterine adenomyosis who met the inclusion criteria were enrolled in our study from October 2015 to October 2017. Sixty-eight patients underwent PMWA, and sixty-five patients underwent USgRFA. All patients were followed up for 12 months. Assessment endpoints included treatment time, percentage ablation, percentage uterine regression, symptom severity scores (SSSs), dysmenorrhea scores and adverse events. Results The mean age of the patients in our study was 39.4 ± 4.2 years (range, 35–50 years), and the median volume of uterine adenomyosis was 124.3 cm3 (range, 28.7–374.5 cm3). The mean ablation time was 16.3 ± 4.9 min (range, 5–23 min) in the MWA group, which was demonstrably superior to that of the RFA group, which was 37.5 ± 6.2 min (range, 5–39 min). The mean percentages of ablation of uterine adenomyosis were 79.7 ± 15.1% and 79.2 ± 14.2% in the MWA group and the RFA group, respectively, and showed no significant difference between the groups. The percentages of regression of uterine volume also showed no marked difference between the two groups. Changes in the dysmenorrhea scores and the SSSs after ablation were similar in the MWA group and in the RFA group, and no significant difference was found between the groups. Finally, the percentage occurrence of adverse events was the same in the two groups. Conclusions The safety and effectiveness of PMWA and USgRFA in the treatment of uterine adenomyosis were similar; however, the mean ablation time of PMWA was shorter than that of USgRFA.

Use of percutaneous microwave ablation for the treatment of bone tumors: a retrospective study of clinical outcomes in 47 patients

ObjectiveThe present study aimed to evaluate the short-term clinical performance and safety of percutaneous microwave ablation (MWA) techniques for the treatment of bone tumors.MethodsThis single-institution retrospective study investigated 47 cases of bone tumors treated by MWA from June 2015 to June 2018. The study included 26 patients (55.3%) with benign bone tumors and 21 patients (44.7%) with malignant bone tumors. The tumors were located in the spine or sacrum (15, 31.9%), the upper extremities (6, 12.8%), the lower extremities (17, 36.2%) and the pelvis (9, 19.1%). Outcomes regarding clinical efficacy, including pain relief, quality of life, and intervention-related complications, were evaluated before and after MWA using the visual analog scale (VAS) and the 36-item Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36) scoring system.ResultsOf the 47 patients included in this study, all of them completed follow-up examinations, with a mean follow-up duration of 4.8 ± 1.6 months (range, 2–9 months). Significantly improved VAS and SF-36 scores were recorded after the initial treatment (P<0.001), suggesting that almost 100% of patients experienced pain relief and an improved quality of life following surgery. No major intervention-related complications (e.g., serious neurovascular injury or infection) occurred during or after the treatment. We recorded only three minor posttreatment complications (6.4%, 3/47), which were related to thermal injury that caused myofasciitis and affected wound healing.ConclusionIn our study, the short-term efficacy of MWA was considerably favorable, with a relatively low rate of complications. Our results also showed that MWA was effective for pain relief and improved patients’ quality of life, making it a feasible treatment alternative for bone tumors.

Efficacy and Safety of Percutaneous Microwave Ablation and Cementoplasty in the Treatment of Painful Spinal Metastases and Myeloma.

Painful spinal metastases are a common cause of cancer-related morbidity. Percutaneous ablation presents an attractive minimally invasive alternative to conventional therapies. We performed a retrospective review of 69 patients with 102 painful spinal metastases undergoing microwave ablation and cementoplasty to determine the efficacy and safety of this treatment. Procedures were performed between January 2015 and October 2016 with the patient under general anesthesia using image guidance for 102 spinal metastases in 69 patients in the following areas: cervical (n = 2), thoracic (n = 50), lumbar (n = 34), and sacral (n = 16) spine. Tumor pathologies included the following: multiple myeloma (n = 10), breast (n = 27), lung (n = 12), thyroid (n = 6), prostate (n = 5), colon (n = 4), renal cell (n = 3), oral squamous cell (n = 1), and adenocarcinoma of unknown origin (n = 1). Procedural efficacy was determined using the visual analog scale measured preprocedurally and at 2-4 weeks and 20-24 weeks postprocedure. Tumor locoregional control was assessed on follow-up cross-sectional imaging. Procedural complications were recorded to establish the safety profile. The median ablation time was 4 minutes 30 seconds ± 7 seconds, and energy dose, 4.1 ± 1.6 kJ. Median visual analog scale scores were the following: 7.0 ± 1.8 preprocedurally, 2 ± 1.6 at 2-4 weeks, and 2 ± 2.1 at 20-24 weeks. Eight patients died within 6 months following the procedure. Follow-up imaging in the surviving patients at 20-24 weeks demonstrated no locoregional progression in 59/61 patients. Two complications were documented (S1 nerve thermal injury and skin burn). Microwave ablation is an effective and safe treatment technique for painful spinal metastases. Further studies may be helpful in determining the role of microwave ablation in locoregional control of metastases.

Percutaneous High Frequency Microwave Ablation of Uterine Fibroids: Systematic Review.

Uterine fibroids are the most common benign pelvic tumor of the female genital tract and tend to increase with age; they cause menorrhagia, dysmenorrhea, pelvic pressure symptoms, back pain, and subfertility. Currently, the management is based mainly on medical or surgical approaches. The nonsurgical and minimally invasive therapies are emerging approaches that to the state of the art include uterine artery embolization (UAE), image-guided thermal ablation techniques like magnetic resonance-guided focused ultrasound surgery (MRgFUS) or radiofrequency ablation (RF), and percutaneous microwave ablation (PMWA). The purpose of the present review is to describe feasibility results and safety of PMWA according to largest studies available in current literature. Moreover technical aspects of the procedure were analyzed providing important data on large scale about potential efficacy of PMWA in clinical setting. However larger studies with international registries and randomized, prospective trials are still needed to better demonstrate the expanding benefits of PMWA in the management of uterine fibroids.

Ultrasound-guided percutaneous microwave ablation for small liver cancers adjacent to large vessels: long-term outcomes and strategies

Abstract Objective The aim of the study was to evaluate the long-term efficacy and safety of percutaneous microwave ablation (MWA) for small hepatic cancers adjacent to large vessels and to investigate the treatment strategies. Methods From March 2009 to July 2015, a total of 86 patients with 94 tumors underwent ultrasound (US)-guided percutaneous MWA, with pathologically proven or clinically diagnosed liver cancers measuring ≤ 3 cm in diameter and located ≤ 10 mm from a major vessel (n = 94). Regular follow-up after MWA was performed to assess treatment efficacy and perioperative complications. Results The complete ablation rate at 1 month after MWA was 93.3% (84/90). The 6-, 9-, 12-, 24-, 36-, 48-, 60-, 72-, and 84-month local recurrence rates were 2.4%, 2.4%, 3.7%, 6.6%, 8.4%, 8.4%, 8.4%, 8.4%, and 8.4%, respectively. There were no major complications. The perioperative special complication rate was 5.32% (5/94), including 3 cases of moderate liver function damage and 2 cases of limited sub-capsular hematoma. Conclusion Percutaneous MWA for small hepatic cancers adjacent to large vessels is feasible, effective, and safe with an acceptable rate of complications. The key point is to strictly follow operative indications and adopt proper treatment strategies.

Percutaneous microwave ablation of adrenal tumours under ultrasound guidance in 33 patients with 35 tumours: A single-centre experience

Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate the efficacy and safety of percutaneous microwave ablation (MWA) of adrenal tumours under ultrasound (US) guidance.Materials and methods: A total of 33 consecutive patients with 35 tumours were enrolled. The term ‘technical success’ is used to indicate whether the tumour was treated according to protocol and was covered completely by the ablation zone. Technical success, local tumour progression (LTP) and complications were recorded. For seven patients with eight biochemically active tumours, biochemical markers were recorded prior to and after the ablation procedure.Results: In this study, technical success was achieved in all cases. Follow-up imaging was performed on 31 patients with 33 tumours (excluding two patients who were lost to follow-up). LTP occurred for five tumours (15.2%) at a mean of 24 months of follow-up (range 3–82 months). In the subgroup analysis of tumour size and LTP, a significant difference was noted between tumours with a diameter ≤5 cm compared with those >5 cm (p < 0.01). For seven cases of metabolically active adrenal tumours, technical success was confirmed in all patients, and LTP occurred in one case of recurrent pheochromocytoma. All patients demonstrated the normalisation of abnormal biochemical markers after ablation. No major complications were observed.Conclusion: Percutaneous MWA under US guidance is effective in terms of good local control of adrenal tumours with a diameter of less than or equal to 5 cm and is capable of treating biochemically active tumours harbouring clinical syndromes.

A retrospective comparison of microwave ablation and high intensity focused ultrasound for treating symptomatic uterine fibroids

ObjectivesTo retrospectively compare the effectiveness and safety of percutaneous microwave ablation (PMWA) and ultrasound-guided high-intensity focused ultrasound (USgHIFU) for treating symptomatic uterine fibroids. MethodsSeventy-three women with symptomatic uterine fibroids who met the inclusion criteria were enrolled in our study from September 2012 to December 2013. Thirty-one patients with forty uterine fibroids underwent PMWA, and forty-two patients with fifty-one uterine fibroids underwent USgHIFU. A contrast-enhanced MRI was performed before and after treatment, and all patients were followed up for 6 months. Assessment endpoints included symptom severity scores (SSS), treatment time, ablation rate, fibroid regression rate and adverse events. ResultsThe mean age of the patients in our study was 35.4±6.2 years (range, 21–49 years), and the median volume of uterine fibroids was 95.7cm3 (60.3–131.5cm3). The ablation rate of uterine fibroids was 79.8±18.2% and 77.1±14.9% in the PMWA group and the USgHIFU group, respectively, and showed no significant difference between the groups. Changes in SSS after PMWA were similar in the PMWA group (47.7 pre-treatment vs. 29.9 post-treatment) and USgHIFU group (42.1 pre-treatment vs. 24.6 post-treatment). The regression rate of uterine fibroids also showed no marked difference between the two groups (PMWA, 50.3%; USgHIFU, 52.4%). The median treatment time of the PMWA group was 46.2min, which was demonstrably superior to USgHIFU. Finally, the occurrence rate of adverse events was the same in the two groups. ConclusionsThe safety and effectiveness of PMWA and USgHIFU in the treatment of uterine fibroids were similar; however, the median treatment time of PMWA was shorter than that of USgHIFU.

Percutaneous microwave ablation of larger hepatocellular carcinoma

To evaluate the efficacy and safety of percutaneous microwave ablation (MWA) in patients with larger hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) tumours. Eighty HCC patients with the maximum tumour measuring between 3 and 8cm were treated using MWA. Of these patients, 57 had initial HCC, while 23 had recurrent HCC. Fifty-two patients had a main tumour measuring 3-5cm, and 28 had a main tumour measuring 5-8cm. Local tumour control, complications, long-term survival, and prognostic factors were analysed. Complete ablation after the initial treatment was achieved in 70 of 80 (87.5%) patients. Sixteen of the 72 (22.2%) successfully treated patients developed local recurrence. Major complications occurred in 7.5% patients. No procedure-related mortality was observed. The 1, 2, 3, and 5 year overall survival rates after the initial ablation were 81.1, 68.2, 56.5, and 34.6%, with a median survival of 56 months. Univariate analysis revealed that small tumour size (p=0.003) and pre-ablation α-foetoprotein (AFP) level ≤400ng/ml (p=0.042) were favourable prognostic factors of overall survival. Multivariate analysis identified only tumour size as the independent prognosis factor (p=0.008). Percutaneous MWA is effective and safe for treating larger HCC tumours. The local tumour control and long-term survival are acceptable.

To assess the feasibility and safety of percutaneous microwave ablation of the lung in rabbits, percutaneous puncture and lung microwave ablation were performed in seven New Zealand white rabbits under computed tomography (CT) guidance. Technical feasibility and complications were evaluated. Two rabbits were sacrificed immediately and gross and microscopic pathology was analyzed. The remaining rabbits received CT scans 1 week and 3 months later.&nbsp;CT scans showed the ablation size was&nbsp;1.1 ~&nbsp;1.6&nbsp;cm immediately after ablation. The lesions shrank slightly 1 week later. After 3 months, the ablation lesions involuted significantly and even disappeared. Mild pneumothorax was found in 2 rabbits but resolved spontaneously 1 week later. Histologic changes in the microwave lesions were observed which were characterized by the central necrosis and edema of surrounding tissues.&nbsp;It is feasible and safe to perform CT-guided percutaneous microwave ablation of the lung in rabbits. Although further study is still required; microwave ablation can be used as a minimally invasive and effective therapeutic technique in patients with lung tumors. &nbsp; Key words:&nbsp;Lung, computed tomography, microwave ablation.

Is percutaneous microwave ablation of liver tumor safe for patients with renal dysfunction

Purpose To determine the safety of percutaneous microwave ablation of primary and metastatic liver tumor for patients with renal dysfunction. Materials and methods Fifty primary and metastatic liver tumors in 23 patients with renal dysfunction were retrospectively reviewed at our institution. Renal function was determined by measuring serum creatinine and serum urea before MWA as baseline, within 1 week and at last follow-up. The mean creatinine was 1.69 ± 0.32 mg/dL, 1.71 ± 0.33 mg/dL, and 1.71 ± 0.26 mg/dL respectively, there was not a statistically significant difference between baseline and at last follow-up ( P = 0.26). The mean serum urea was 52.52 ± 6.48 mg/dL, 56.55 ± 14.72 mg/dL, and 57.90 ± 16.39 mg/dL respectively, there was not a statistically significant difference between baseline and within 1 week ( P = 0.119), between within baseline and at last follow-up ( P = 0.090). At the last follow-up examination, all patients had adequately functioning kidneys and did not require any form of renal replacement therapy. This is a small retrospectively study including highly selected patients treated. Therefore, further study should to determine the safety of percutaneous MWA for patients with renal dysfunction in the future. Conclusions Percutaneous microwave ablation of primary and metastatic liver tumor is no adverse influence on renal function for patients with renal dysfunction in this preliminary series, which can be a minimally invasive alternative therapy.
