BNQDs sensitized in-situ growth SnO2 nanotube arrays for enhancing the gas sensing performances to isopropanol

Isopropanol possessed enormous significance across various application fields from industry to healthcare. Detecting isopropanol was essential in leak detection and diagnosis of disease because it can assist diagnose of lung cancer and guarantee safety in industrial environment via discerning potential leaks. In this research, a simple hydrothermal method and subsequent sacrificial template strategy were used to fabricate in-situ growth SnO2 nanotube arrays (SnO2NTs). Next, SnO2NTs was decorated with boron nitride quantum dots (BNQDs) in order to enhance the gas-sensing performances of the SnO2NTs. The BN/12-SnO2NTs exhibited the highest response (s = Ra/Rg) of up to 7.9 for 100ppm IPA, which was 2.7 times that of the 12-SnO2NTs. The response and recovery times of the SnO2NTs-based sensor were around 10 s and 8 s, respectively. The optimal working temperature of BN-SnO2NTs was 260 ℃, which was significantly lower than that of the pure SnO2NTs sensor (320 ℃). The improved sensing performances were largely attributed to the sensitization effects of BNQDs and the one-dimensional hollow structure of SnO2NTs, which brought about the generation of more oxygen-active species on the surface of BN-SnO2NTs and a significant decrease in the activation energy of the redox reaction.

Risk and Reliability Assessment of Metal Lathe Machining Operation with DBN-FFTA Hybrid Approach

A metal lathe is a high-performance tool used in the field of metalworking to remove excess material and shape metal parts. However, engaging in metal turning operations carries risks that can lead to serious accidents and physical harm. It is crucial to ensure that these systems are functioning correctly, as any malfunction or flaw can lead to dangerous situations. To maintain safety in industrial environments, it is important to assess the risks and reliability of the equipment. A study was conducted using a method called fuzzy fault tree analysis (FFTA), combined with fuzzy logic, to determine the probability of basic events. Bayesian networks (BNs) were utilized to update probabilities and overcome limitations of the fault tree (FT). A Dynamic Bayesian Network (DBN) was employed to estimate the reliability of a metal lathe in a specific scenario. The FT identified 57 root events and estimated the probability of workpiece FLY-OUTS as 0.03174329 using the FT method and 0.031505849 using the BN method. Based on the predictions of the DBN, system reliability decreased by 19.89% after 24 months. The FT diagram comprehensively captured all the factors associated with FLY-OUTS, highlighting that improper closing of the part on the tool was a significant contributing factor. The study concludes by proposing safety measures for turning operations based on the identified critical events.

Testbed for industrial advanced driver assistance systems

Factories and industrial warehouses are environments in which accidents can be easily produced. People on foot work in the same place where heavy machinery is operating. Therefore, when accidents occur, they frequently have severe consequences. To reduce the number of accidents and their effects, there are strict regulations on the workplace and workers participate in regular training activities. In recent years, there has been a great evolution in Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) specially in public road vehicles. With the proper design, these systems may also help to improve safety in industrial environments. For example, an ADAS may warn industrial drivers about nearby pedestrians. Nevertheless, the development of ADAS in this context is complex because industrial environments and their machines are very heterogeneous. Hence, this paper describes a testbed developed to assess the design of ADAS for industrial vehicles. The testbed includes all the elements needed to evaluate an industrial ADAS: hardware, an event management system, a simulator of a warehouse and, an evaluation methodology. To determine the effectiveness of the testbed, the assessment of an ADAS designed to warn industrial drivers about nearby obstacles has also been performed. The assessment includes a subjective evaluation of the testbed and of the cognitive load generated during the evaluation. The results of this assessment are very promising. They show that the testbed is realistic and that it is effective for ADAS designers to analyse the reactions of drivers to the signals produced by the assistance systems under evaluation.

Lighting Matters in Industrial Environments: A Framework Linking Workplace Safety to Lighting Quality Metrics

Lighting affects human performance and, therefore, safety in industrial environments. Recent developments in light-emitting diode (LED) lighting technology offer an opportunity for a scientific evaluation of the quality of light in industrial spaces. For this article, the possibility of reducing the risk of key causes of occupational hazards through the effective application of lighting was evaluated. Vision science research was reviewed to identify mechanisms that could improve object detection, supra threshold visual performance, and response time. Metrics to quantify these mechanisms-i.e., small target visibility (STV), relative visual performance (RVP), mesopic luminance, and luminaire system application efficacy (LSAE)-were reviewed and applied in the context of industrial lighting installations. The results indicated the potential to harness new lighting technology to enhance visual task performance and thereby improve safety and productivity. Lighting is also related to the fatigue of industrial workers. It could influence fatigue by degrading the sleep quality of night-shift workers, causing visual discomfort and creating a negative perception of the environment. A review of research, simulations, and calculations led the authors to develop a framework that links occupational injury incidents to lighting quality metrics for industrial environments. This framework needs to be validated using field studies that are designed based on this research. In this period of technological transition, facility managers can use this study to benchmark lighting technologies and installations for safety. This article presents value propositions that a versatile and controllable source such as LEDs could offer to industries.
