NIpple Position to Pinpoint Localization of Chest Drain Insertion in FEmale Trauma Patients: The NIPPLE-Trial-A Landmark Study.

Background: The insertion of chest drains (CD) in trauma patients is a lifesaving, albeit high-risk intervention. Safe insertion of CD in settings where aids like ultrasound are not available relies on a landmark technique defining the so-called triangle of safety. The inferior margin of this triangle is identified by nipple height, which is thought to correspond to the fifth intercostal space (ICS). Training manikins are modeled after a lean male body and oftentimes insinuating jokes fuel uncertainty about the height of the nipple as a reliable landmark in female trauma patients. This study aims to prove that the nipple can be considered a safe landmark for CD insertion in women: even if larger breasts follow the force of gravity, it should not act towards the direction of the feet, but to the sides of the thorax in a flat-lying trauma patient. Methods: An online questionnaire was designed and distributed amongst female surgeons. Epidemiological data (age, nr of pregnancies, history of breastfeeding) was collected. Height, weight, and body mass index (BMI) were reported. Chest circumference and underbust girth were self-measured. The nipple position in relation to the ICS was measured by the women while lying in a supine position. Results: 237 female surgeons completed the questionnaire. Nine questionnaires were excluded due to incomplete data sets. 20 women were excluded due to previous breast surgery. Thus, 208 participants (or 416 nipples) were included in analysis. In supine position, both nipples were located in the 5th (±0.8) intercostal space. Age, BMI, height, weight, and status post-pregnancy had no significant impact on nipple position. Interestingly, a history of breastfeeding correlated with lower nipple position. Conclusions: The nipple is a safe landmark for identifying the correct insertion position of chest drains in supine-lying female trauma patients.

Biportal Endoscopic Transforaminal Lumbar Interbody Fusion: How to Improve Fusion Rate?

Biportal endoscopic transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (BE-TLIF) is a minimally invasive surgical technique for treating degenerative lumbar spine conditions. It offers advantages such as reduced soft tissue trauma and lower infection rates, but certain technical aspects may be challenging. The current study aims to identify strategies to enhance the fusion rate in BE-TLIF by addressing these specific challenges. A literature review was conducted on techniques to improve fusion rates in BE-TLIF. The review suggests that lateral-based portals supplemented with medial portals allowed for safe insertion of interbody cages with large footprint. Direct visualization of the disc space with a 30° endoscope assisted with better disc space preparation. Facetectomies performed with osteotomes, rather than burrs, ensured maximum retrieval of autologous bone graft. Utilizing bone morphogenetic proteins with sustained release carriers such as hydroxyapatite can be useful to increase fusion rates of BE-TLIF. To our knowledge, the current literature is the first comprehensive review of strategies to enhance fusion rates in BE-TLIF. The proposed techniques and biological adjuncts are effective means to address key challenges associated with the procedure, and such strategies would potentially shorten the learning curve and improve clinical outcomes. Further clinical studies are required to validate these findings and establish standardized protocols. These findings provide practical solutions to overcome common challenges in BE-TLIF. The suggested techniques would reduce the incidence of pseudarthrosis, improve patient outcomes, and ultimately offer a safer and more reliable option for lumbar interbody fusion patients.

Linear and Post-Buckling Analysis of Biocompatible Polymer Microneedle for Transdermal Drug Delivery

To facilitate the delivery of drugs into the skin structure, microneedles play a pivotal role. Unlike conventional hypodermic syringes, microneedles penetrate only the dermis layer, avoiding nerve receptors and resulting in a painless injection. However, when a drug is administered into the skin, microneedles may undergo bending and buckling, leading to structural failure. Such failure can cause the drug to remain beneath the skin, potentially creating complications. Preventing the catastrophe of microneedle failure necessitates a close examination of parameters involved in the bending and buckling process. In this paper, we focus on buckling analysis, as the majority of microneedle failures are attributed to the buckling effect. We perform buckling analysis through finite element analysis to predict the critical buckling load (Pcr). This analysis helps determine the maximum load that a microneedle can withstand. We conduct this analysis using two modes: linear and non-linear (post-buckling analysis). By varying the tip diameter of the microneedle (20µm, 40µm, 60µm, 80µm, 100µm), we can identify the safe insertion load.

An in vitro study of a combined patient-specific device for safe and accurate insertion of infrazygomatic crest miniscrews.

To develop and assess the efficacy of a novel combined patient-specific device (CPSD) for the accurate and safe insertion of infrazygomatic crest miniscrews in orthodontic procedures. Twenty-eight miniscrews were placed in the infrazygomatic crest region of 28 cadaver maxillae using the direct manual method (n = 14) or the CPSD (n = 14) based on preset trajectories. The CPSD, designed based on the integration model, included a positioning guide, an insertion guide, and a depth-limiting groove. Deviations in the insertion site, tip location, insertion angle, and biting depth between the preset and real insertion trajectories were calculated to evaluate the accuracy of miniscrew insertion. Classification frequencies of root proximity, sinus penetration depth, and biting depth of the miniscrew after insertion were also calculated to evaluate the safety of miniscrew insertion. Regarding evaluation of accuracy, significant differences were observed in the deviation values of the insertion site, tip location, insertion angle, and biting depth between the CPSD and freehand groups (P = .001, P < .001, P < .001, P = .039, respectively). Regarding evaluation of safety, a significant difference was observed in the classification frequencies of root proximity between the two groups (P = .016). Compared with manual insertion, CPSD could be a preferred method for safe and accurate insertion of infrazygomatic crest miniscrews for orthodontists.

Effectiveness of a nurse-led peripherally inserted central catheter service: A retrospective cohort study.

A multitude of challenges arises from the growing utilisation of peripherally inserted central catheters (PICCs), including the ability to provide timely, effective and safe insertion, which must be ensured and prioritised in patient care. A nurse-led model of care has become more prevalent as PICCs become extensively needed due to their applications. However, despite their widespread use, such intervention is yet in its inception in Saudi Arabia, and thereby, evaluating the outcomes of this service is of utmost importance to support patient safety initiatives and quality of care. This research aims to assess the effectiveness of a nurse-led PICC placement service. A quantitative retrospective cohort design was used. The sample of this study was 333 random subsets of records on PICC insertion for adult patients between 1st April 2019 and 31st March 2023 in a tertiary medical facility in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. A nurse-led PICC service demonstrated an overall successful placement of 330 cases (99.1%), out of which 323 PICCs (97%) were successfully inserted under intra-cavitary electrocardiogram (IC-ECG) guidance, while 7 PICCs (2.1%) were successfully inserted with fluoroscopy. The overall complication rate was 2.35 occurrences per 1000 CL days, whereas the complication rate within the first 10 days after PICC insertion was 0.42 per 1000 CL days. A nurse-led model for PICC insertion has remarkably high success rates and low rates of complication, highlighting the pivotal role of a specialised PICC team. This service boasted a commendable track record of achieving a high rate of success in its implementation, implying that a nurse-led PICC service operates effectively to improve the patient experience by delivering timely and high-quality healthcare service.

The DTR Technique-Drilling through the Roots of Posterior Teeth for Anatomically Guided Immediate Implant Placement: A Cohort Study.

The present study clinically analyzes implant survival of immediate implant placement cases using the drilling through roots (DTR) technique for anatomically-guided implant site preparation, as an aid to placing immediate dental implants in multi-radicular teeth. This clinical analysis utilized patients' electronic dental records who underwent immediate implant surgery using the DTR technique. All immediately placed implants were followed up regularly every year, after restoration. Implant survival was assessed with the Albrektsson et al. criteria. Inferential statistics was performed using SPSS v 21(IBM Corp., Armonk, NY) software. The Kaplan-Meier survival analysis was done to assess the implant survival probability. A total of 250 records of dental implants placed in 227 subjects using the DTR technique were considered. Results showed that the mean survival duration of implants was found 63.29 months and the median survival duration to be 55 months. A 100% success rate was seen in implant fixed bridge cases, and about 97.6% success was seen in single crown cases. No significant difference was seen in the survival rates during the follow-up period when compared according to the quadrants/site of implant placement. The findings concluded that tooth-guided rapid implant placement is a unique strategy for convenient and safe insertion, providing accurate three-dimensional positioning. The DTR method is a novel approach that facilitates accurate positioning and angulation of the implant bed preparation by stabilizing and guiding the osteotomy drills using the retained root. Evaluation of Safe Insertion Angles for Spinal Needles and Safe Intensity of the Holmium:YAG Laser during Percutaneous Laser Disc Ablations in Feline Cadavers.

In the context of veterinary medicine, minimally invasive techniques for feline spinal surgery remain underexplored, particularly for percutaneous laser disc ablation (PLDA) when using the Holmium:YAG (Ho:YAG) laser. This study aimed to refine the application of the Ho:YAG laser in PLDA by determining the optimal laser intensity and safe insertion angles for the thoracic and lumbar intervertebral discs (IVDs) in cats. Through utilizing computed tomography (CT) for precise guidance, this research involved a cadaveric study of 10 cats to evaluate the spatial configurations that allow for safe needle insertions and effective laser ablation. Various energy settings of the Ho:YAG laser (20 J, 40 J, and 60 J) were tested to ascertain the balance between adequate disc vaporization and minimal adjacent tissue damage. The results demonstrate that a 40 J setting is the most effective in achieving significant disc decompression without compromising surrounding tissue integrity. Additionally, the CT scans proved crucial in confirming the accuracy of the needle placement and the safety of the laser application angles. This study established that the 40 J setting on the Ho:YAG laser, combined with CT-guided insertion techniques, offers a reliable method for PLDA, thus enhancing the safety and efficacy of feline spinal surgeries.

Development of an Esophageal Sleeve With Variable Stiffness and Internal Diameter for Endoscopic Surgery

Abstract In natural orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery (NOTES), the flexible endoscopic surgical robot utilizes a continuum configuration to navigate narrow, multicurvature esophageal pathways. However, the tool channel's dimensional limitations and the restricted internal layout make it challenging to reduce the outside diameter and highly efficient variable stiffness function significantly. As a result, safe insertion into the esophagus and precise operation remains hugely challenging. In this paper, an esophageal sleeve with variable stiffness and internal diameter is developed for endoscopic procedures. The proposed esophageal sleeve adopts specially designed spiral elastic deployable parts that allow for variations in internal diameter. Furthermore, the elastic deployable parts are designed with serrated protrusion structures that can realize rapid transition between rigidity and flexibility under negative pressure. Fundamental experimental results showed that the outer diameter of the proposed esophageal sleeve can expand from 17 mm to 20 mm, providing inner access up to 13 mm for endoscopic instruments. The serrated protrusion structure allows the esophageal sleeve to rapidly transition from a flexible to a rigid state, resulting in a stiffness gain of approximately 5. Phantom experiments validated the effectiveness and usability of the proposed esophageal sleeve in assisting endoscope insertion, demonstrating its potential clinical value in endoscopic procedures. The significance of this study is the development of a device that can better assist endoscopic procedures.

Pediatric atlas anatomy and its implications for fracture treatment: an anatomical and radiological study

Introduction and objectivesThe objective of the study was: (1) to describe changes in the shape of the atlas during growth, including gender and side differences; (2) to assess the dimension essential for identification of the optimal entry point; (3) to determine the age limit for a safe insertion of 3.5-mm screws into the lateral masses according to our own limiting parameters. Materials and methodsDimensions of the atlas were measured on 200 CT scans of the craniocervical junction in individuals aged 0–18 years and on 34 anatomical specimens of the first cervical vertebra (aged 2.5–18 years). Both series were divided according to the gender and age. The values measured on CT scans were used for statistical comparison of data in boys and girls and comparison of the right and left sides. ResultsThe atlas reaches its maximum growth rate between 0 and 2 years of age, then the growth decelerates and continues until the age of 18 years. The proportion of dimensions of C1 vertebral foramens changes with age. The youngest children show a relatively greater distance from the left to the right medial pedicle; around the age of 5 the values get even and subsequently the distance from the inner wall of anterior to posterior arch gets relatively greater. The transverse foramen has a slightly oval shape throughout the period of growth. Statistically significant differences between boys and girls were observed primarily between 12 and 18 years of age. ConclusionThe study has proved adequate size of lateral masses for insertion of 3.5-mm screws in all patients from the age of 5 years. In younger children, the patient´s anatomy should be respected and the surgical technique tailored accordingly.

Design and Evaluation of an Eye Mountable AutoDALK Robot for Deep Anterior Lamellar Keratoplasty.

Partial-thickness corneal transplants using a deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty (DALK) approach has demonstrated better patient outcomes than a full-thickness cornea transplant. However, despite better clinical outcomes from the DALK procedure, adoption of the technique has been limited because the accurate insertion of the needle into the deep stroma remains technically challenging. In this work, we present a novel hands-free eye mountable robot for automatic needle placement in the cornea, AutoDALK, that has the potential to simplify this critical step in the DALK procedure. The system integrates dual light-weight linear piezo motors, an OCT A-scan distance sensor, and a vacuum trephine-inspired design to enable the safe, consistent, and controllable insertion of a needle into the cornea for the pneumodissection of the anterior cornea from the deep posterior cornea and Descemet's membrane. AutoDALK was designed with feedback from expert corneal surgeons and performance was evaluated by finite element analysis simulation, benchtop testing, and ex vivo experiments to demonstrate the feasibility of the system for clinical applications. The mean open-loop positional deviation was 9.39 µm, while the system repeatability and accuracy were 39.48 µm and 43.18 µm, respectively. The maximum combined thrust of the system was found to be 1.72 N, which exceeds the clinical penetration force of the cornea. In a head-to-head ex vivo comparison against an expert surgeon using a freehand approach, AutoDALK achieved more consistent needle depth, which resulted in fewer perforations of Descemet's membrane and significantly deeper pneumodissection of the stromal tissue. The results of this study indicate that robotic needle insertion has the potential to simplify the most challenging task of the DALK procedure, enable more consistent surgical outcomes for patients, and standardize partial-thickness corneal transplants as the gold standard of care if demonstrated to be more safe and more effective than penetrating keratoplasty.

How to Prevent Nerve Root Injury in Uniportal Full Endoscopic Lumbar Fusion Surgery? Insights From a Cadaveric Anatomic Study With Simulation Surgery.

The study included 2 fresh-frozen cadavers. To elucidate the positional relationship between surgical instruments and nerve roots during full endoscopic facet-sparing (FE fs-TLIF) and full endoscopic facet-resecting (FE fr-TLIF) transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion and propose safe instrumentation insertion procedures and recommend cage glider designs aimed at protecting nerve roots. Endoscopic surgical techniques are increasingly used for minimally invasive lumbar fusion surgery, with FE fr-TLIF and FE fs-TLIF being common approaches. However, the risk of nerve root injury remains a significant concern during these procedures. Eight experienced endoscopic spine surgeons performed uniportal FE fr-TLIF and FE fs-TLIF on cadaveric lumbar spines, totaling 16 surgeries. Postoperation, soft tissues were removed to assess the positional relationship between the cage entry point and nerve roots. Distances between the cage entry point, traversing nerve root, and exiting nerve root were measured. Safe instrumentation design and insertion procedures were determined. In FE fr-TLIF, the mean distance between the cage entry point and traversing nerve root was significantly shorter compared with FE fs-TLIF (3.30 ± 1.35 vs . 8.58 ± 2.47mm, respectively; P < 0.0001). Conversely, the mean distance between the cage entry point and the exiting nerve root was significantly shorter in FE fs-TLIF compared with FE fr-TLIF (3.73 ± 1.97 vs . 6.90 ± 1.36mm, respectively; P < 0.0001). For FE fr-TLIF, prioritizing the protection of the traversing root using a 2-bevel tip cage glider was crucial. In contrast, for FE fs-TLIF, a single-bevel tip cage glider placed in the caudal location was recommended. This study elucidates the anatomic relationship between cage entry points and nerve roots in uniportal endoscopic lumbar fusion surgery. Protection strategies should prioritize the traversing root in FE fr-TLIF and the exiting root in FE fs-TLIF, with corresponding variations in surgical techniques. Level V.

Assessing the Accuracy and Safety Thresholds of Patient-Specific Screw Guide Template System in Cervical and Thoracic Spine Surgeries Using DAST Measurements.

To analyze the reliability of the newly developed patient-specific Screw Guide Template (SGT) system as an intraoperative navigation device for spinal screw insertion. We attempted to place 428 screws for 51 patients. The accuracy of the screw track was assessed by deviation of the screw axis from the preplanned trajectory on postoperative CT. The safety of the screw insertion was evaluated by the bone breach of the screw. The bone diameter available for screw trajectory (DAST) was measured, and the relations to the bone breach were analyzed. In the inserted screws, 98.4% were defined as accurate, and 94.6% were contained in the target bone. In the cervical spine, the screw deviation between breaching (0.57 mm) and contained screws (0.43 mm) did not significantly differ, whereas DAST for breaching screws (3.62 mm) was significantly smaller than contained screws (5.33 mm) (p<0.001). Cervical screws with ≥4.0 mm DAST showed a significantly lower incidence of bone breach (0.4%) than ≤3.9 mm DAST (28.3%) (p<0.001). In the thoracic spine, screw deviation and DAST had significant differences between breaching (1.54 mm, 4.41 mm) and contained (0.75 mm, 6.07 mm) (p<0.001). The incidence of the breach was significantly lower in thoracic screws with ≥5.0 mm (1.9%) than ≤4.9 (21.9%) DAST (p<0.001). This study demonstrated that our SGT system could support precise screw insertion for 98.4% accuracy and 94.6% safety. DAST was recommended to be ≥4.0 and ≥5.0 mm in the cervical and thoracic spines for safe screw insertion.

MANAGEMENT OF THE TIBIAL SHAFT FRACTURES WITH A SUPRAPATELLAR APPROACH

Objectives: Tibia fractures are the most common long bone fractures, among which diaphyseal fractures are more common. Tibial diaphyseal fractures have a significant risk of non-union and malunion among all long bone fractures. Among adults, IMILN is the treatment of choice for unstable and displaced fractures. The traditional surgical method is the infrapatellar approach, which has its own drawbacks. Here, we are studying the suprapatellar approach. Methods: The prospective study was conducted on 25 patients in the Department of Orthopedics, Government General Hospital, Kurnool for 1 year from November 2022 to November 2023. Patients were examined clinically and functional outcomes were noted. Results: The suprapatellar approach shows an average operative time was 40–80 min and blood loss was around 70–90 mL. The mean time of union was 15–16 weeks. Conclusion: For tibial diaphyseal fractures, the suprapatellar approach is a safe and effective alternative nail insertion.

Radiation Exposure During Lumbar Interbody Fusion Surgery Can Be Reduced by Using a Three-Dimensional Patient-Specific Template Guide.

The use of posterior lumber interbody fusion (PLIF) using cortical bone trajectory (CBT) with a patient-specific 3D template guide is increasingly widespread. To our knowledge, no studies have extensively evaluated the reduction of radiation exposure when using patient-specific drill template guides. The purpose of this study is to compare the intra-operative radiation dose and surgeon's exposure to radiation in CBT-PLIF when using a patient-specific drill guide with that in traditional minimally invasive (MIS)-PLIF. In this observational study, we retrospectively compared data from five patients who were treated with single-level CBT-PLIF using a patient-specific drill guide (G group) and five patients who were treated with single-level traditional MIS-PLIF (M group). We compared the surgical time, surgeon's exposure to radiation, and intra-operative radiation time and dose between the two groups of patients. The mean age of the patients was 67.0 years in the M group and 74.2 years in the G group. The average surgical time was 242.8 min in the M group and 189.6 min in the G group (p = 0.020). The surgeon's exposure to radiation was 373.7 µSv in the M group and 81.75 µSv in the G group at chest level outside the protector (p = 0.00092); 42.0 µSv (M group) and 3.6 µSv (G group) at chest level inside the protector (p = 0.0000062); and 4.33 µSv (M group) and 1.20 µSv (G group) at the buttocks of the surgeon (p = 0.0013). Radiation time was 269.8 s (M group) and 56.6 s (G group) (p = 0.0097), and radiation dose was 153.7 mGy (M group) and 30.42 mGy (G group) (p = 0.00057). The patient-specific drill template guide is an invaluable tool that facilitates the safe insertion of CBT screws with a low radiation dose from the outset.

The SIECC protocol: A novel insertion bundle to minimize the complications related to epicutaneo-cava catheters in neonates.

Epicutaneo-cava catheters are the most widely used central venous catheters in the neonate, but their insertion and management are potentially associated with several complications, both during placement (failure to proceed with the catheter, primary malposition, etc.) and during maintenance (infection, venous thrombosis, catheter dislocation, secondary malposition, etc.). Recent studies have identified methods and techniques that may be effective in minimizing the risk of most of these complications. This paper proposes a structured, sequential insertion bundle-nicknamed "the SIECC protocol" (SIECC = Safe Insertion of Epicutaneo-Cava Catheters)-which includes seven evidence-based strategies which have been proven to increase the safety, effectiveness, and cost-effectiveness of the procedure.

Evolution of the clinical-stage hyperactive TcBuster transposase as a platform for robust non-viral production of adoptive cellular therapies

Cellular therapies for the treatment of human diseases, such as chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T and NK cells have shown remarkable clinical efficacy in treating hematological malignancies, however current methods mainly utilize viral vectors which are limited by their cargo size capacities, high cost, and long timelines for production of clinical reagent. Delivery of genetic cargo via DNA transposon engineering is a more timely and cost-effective approach, yet has been held back by less efficient integration rates. Here, we report the development of a novel hyperactive TcBuster (TcB-M) transposase engineered through structure guided and in vitro evolution approaches that achieves high-efficiency integration of large, multicistronic CAR-expression cassettes in primary human cells. Our proof of principle TcB-M engineering of CAR-NK and CAR-T cells show low integrated vector copy number, a safe insertion site profile, robust in vitro function, and improves survival in a Burkitt lymphoma xenograft model in vivo. Overall, TcB-M is a versatile, safe, efficient and open-source option for the rapid manufacture and preclinical testing of primary human immune cell therapies through delivery of multicistronic large cargo via transposition.

Feasibility of stereotactic optical navigation for needle positioning in percutaneous nephrolithotomy

BackgroundThis study assessed the feasibility of acquiring single-attempt access to the pelvicalyceal system during percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) using stereotactic optical navigation combined with cone-beam CT (CBCT) imaging.MethodsPatients with a PCNL indication were prospectively included in this IRB approved study. After sterile preparation, fiducial markers were attached to patients’ skin. An initial intraprocedural CBCT scan was acquired, on which the urologist planned the needle trajectory using the navigation software. After verifying that no critical structures were crossed, the needle guide was aligned with the plan. A needle was manually inserted through the needle guide to the indicated depth and a second CBCT scan was performed for needle position confirmation. Both, scanning and needle insertion, were performed under apnea. The study evaluated technical success, accuracy, procedure time, complication rate, and radiation dose.ResultsBetween June 2022 and April 2023, seven patients were included. In all patients, the navigation system allowed safe puncture. However, the technical success rate was only 29%. In 42% of the cases, pelvicalyceal access was achieved by a small manual adjustment. In the remaining 29%, the needle was retracted and positioned per clinical standard. The average deviation between the needle and target was 5.9 ± 2.3 mm. The average total procedure time was 211 ± 44 min. The average radiation exposure was 6.4 mSv, with CBCT scanning contributing to 82% of this exposure.ConclusionsThe optical navigation system facilitated safe needle insertion but did not consistently ensure accurate one-attempt needle positioning for PCNL. Real-time visualization and trajectory correction may improve the technical success rate.

A novel neonatal protocol for Safe Insertion of Umbilical Venous Catheters (SIUVeC): Minimizing complications in placement and management.

Insertion of umbilical venous catheters is a common procedure in neonatal intensive care. Though sometimes lifesaving, this maneuver is potentially associated with early and late complications, some of which may be severe and even life threatening (catheter malposition, hepatic lesions, venous thrombosis, pericardial effusion, etc.). The recent literature suggests several operative strategies that, if adopted systematically, may significantly reduce the incidence of both early and late catheter related complications. This paper describes a standardized protocol (Safe Insertion Umbilical Venous Catheter = SIUVeC) which incorporates such novel strategies, with the goal of minimizing the complications related to this procedure.

Morphometric Analysis of the Neural Arch of C2 Vertebra in Indian Population.

The most common injuries to upper cervical spine are fractures of the second cervical vertebrae. The study aims to evaluate the morphometry of the neural arch of the second cervical vertebrae in the South Indian population. Sixty-three second cervical vertebrae of undetermined gender and age without any gross defect were used for the study. The dimensions of neural arch, including superior articular facet, inferior articular facet, pediculoisthmic component, lamina, spinous process, foramen transversarium, and vertebral foramen, were measured by two independent observers using digital vernier caliper accurate to 0.1 mm and the data was analyzed. Descriptive statistics were obtained for the variables. Paired t-test was done to compare the measurements between right and left sides. There was no statistical difference between the right and left sides of the dimensions of superior articular facets, foramen transversarium, and the transverse diameter of inferior articular facet. The anteroposterior diameter of the inferior articular facets was more on the right side (P = 0.009). The width of the pediculoisthmic component in both the superior and inferior aspects was found to be less on the right side than that of the left (P = 0.006 and P = 0.031, respectively). The thickness in the middle one-third of laminae was optimum for bilateral safe screw insertion (≥4.0 mm) in 77% specimens. In summary, measurements of the transverse diameter of superior articular facet and thickness of lamina differed significantly from those reported in literature. This should be kept in mind while doing neurosurgery procedures in the Indian population.
