Distribution Status for the Plants of Alien Species on the Baekdudaegan Protected Area, South Korea

This study was conducted to provide information on alien species to the Baekdudaegan Protected Area eco-survey by Ministry of Environment in South Korea from 2015 to 2019. The scope of the survey is based on data from 26 subsections out of 44 subsections in five regions, excluding Korea National Park.In the study area, a total 58 taxa, consisting of 16 family, 48 genera, 56 species, two varieties were found. In addition, five species of ecosystem-disturbing species were identified that Ambrosia artemisiifolia, Aster pilosus, Rumex acetosella, Solanum carolinense, Humulus japonicus. However, the habitat of ecosystem-disturbing species could not be confirmed in the subsections of Dakmokjae-Kubusiryeong (designated number, 13-20), Gisdaebaegibong-Doraegijae (designated number, 23, 24), Ihwaryeong-Haneuljae (designated number, 33), and Neuljae-Miljae (designated number, 37). The spatial status of alien flora on the Baekdudaegan Protected Area monitored by Ministry of Environment in our data can be basic ecological information for the conservation and management of plant species diversity on it.

Diet and foraging role of European hare (Lepus europaeus) on two invasive non-native shrubs: Cytisus scoparius and Rosa rubiginosa in Northwestern Patagonia, Argentina

ABSTRACT Browsing by alien vertebrate herbivores can have both positive and negative impacts on plant invasion. We studied the European hare (Lepus europaeus) diet and foraging behavior focusing on interactions with two invasive non-native shrub species, Cytisus scoparius and Rosa rubiginosa. Fecal pellets were used for microhistological analysis of diet and seed identification. Foraging use of both species was evaluated by browsing rankings. The diet consisted of 28 items, predominating native grasses such as Poa spp. and Festuca pallescens. Among the non-native species, the grasses Hordeum spp. leaves and stems of the shrub C. scoparius, and seed fragments of Rumex acetosella, and rosehip stand out. Fecal pellets contained 431 whole seeds from nine plant species, predominating non-native species. In diet analysis, a portion of damaged rosehip seeds was observed; however, a significant number of viable seeds were previously extracted. This suggests that consumption of R. rubiginosa fruits contributes to seed dispersal, facilitating its spread. In contrast, the browsing of L. europaeus on the vegetative parts of C. scoparius juveniles significantly reduced their cover, which could slow their growth or prevent their spread. These results are an important input for management decisions to prevent or delay the spread of these invasive species.

Protection of mild steel from corrosion in HCl solution via green Rumex acetosella extract: Experimental and theoretical studies

The efficiency and potential of green Rumex acetosella extract (RAE) on the inhibition of the mild steel (MS) corrosion were investigated in the acidic environment. The high inhibitive capability of RAE on the mild steel was studied by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and linear polarization resistance (LPR) techniques. In addition, potentiodynamic (PD) polarization measurements were carried out to examine corrosion mechanism. The achieved electrochemical tests showed that RAE has a significant inhibition effect on mild steel corrosion. The results of surface analysis recorded by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and atomic force microscopy (AFM) depicted that RAE provide strong protective layer on the steel surface via adsorptive groups. The inhibition efficiency was calculated as 99.7 %, and 99.6 % from LPR and EIS after 120 h exposure time. Adsorption free energy (∆Gadso) value is found as −29.79 kJ mol−1, indicating that both physical and chemical adsorptions occur. Furthermore, the obtained experimental findings were supported with quantum chemical calculation results.

Allelopathic effect of the methanol extract of the weed species-red sorrel (Rumex acetosella L.) on the growth, phytohormone content and antioxidant activity of the cover crop - white clover (Trifolium repens L.)

Allelopathy is a biological process in which one organism releases biochemicals that affect the growth and development of other organisms. The current investigation sought to determine the allelopathic effect of Rumex acetosella on white clover (Trifolium repens) growth and development by using its shoot extract (lower IC50 value) as a foliar treatment. Here, different concentrations (25, 50, 100, and 200 g/L) of shoot extract from Rumex acetosella were used as treatments. With increasing concentrations of shoot extract, the plant growth parameters, chlorophyll and total protein content of Trifolium repens decreased. On the other hand, ROS, such as O2.− and H2O2, and antioxidant enzymes, including SOD, CAT, and POD, increased with increasing shoot extract concentration. A phytohormonal study indicated that increased treatment concentrations increased ABA and SA levels while JA levels were reduced. For the identification of allelochemicals, liquid‒liquid extraction, thin-layer chromatography, and open-column chromatography were conducted using R. acetosella shoot extracts, followed by a seed bioassay on the separated layer. A lower IC50 value was obtained through GC/MS analysis. gammaSitosterol was identified as the most abundant component. The shoot extract of Rumex acetosella has strong allelochemical properties that may significantly impede the growth and development of Trifolium repens. This approach could help to understand the competitive abilities of this weed species and in further research provide an alternate weed management strategy.

Weed infestation of narrow-leaved lupine crops in grain-grass-rowed crop rotation in the North-West of Russia

The results of the long term (2012–2018) study of weed infestation of green fallow fields with narrow-leaved lupin in the crop rotation including cereals, grasses and row crops in the North-West region of Russia (Leningrad region) are presented. The assessment of weediness in the narrow-leaved lupine variety Oligarch crops was carried out annually at 24 permanent survey sites (0.1 square meter). Based on the results of the surveys, the formation of a diverse and constant species composition of weeds (from 15 to 25 species), mainly of medium and severe degree of weediness (141–593 specimens per square meter), with the proportion of young plants ranging from 90.4 to 99.7 %. The mass species of weeds were lamb’s quarters, field pansy, corn spurry, hemp-nettles, fumitory, shepherd’s purse, prevalent perennial weeds were field sowthistle, coltsfoot, red sorrel, couch grass, marsh woundwort. The prevailing influence of weather conditions and individual characteristics on the weed infestation of narrow-leaved lupine crop has been determined. The combined effect of two factors was expressed by 47.7, 57.8 and 47.1 % in terms of species abundance, initial abundance and final phytomass of weeds, respectively. Long term application of mineral fertilizers led to an increase in the number of annuals (by 1.5–1.6 times) and a decrease in the density of growth of perennial weed species (by 1.6–1.9 times). The influence of the integrated plant protection system used in the crop rotation was manifested in a significant decrease in the density of perennial weed species (by 4.6 times) in narrow-leaved lupine crop.

Anthropogenic Impacts Allowed for the Invasion of Understory Species, Affecting the Sustainability of Management Practices in Southern Patagonia

Forest management aims to preserve integrity and ecosystem resilience. Conservation and species invasion patterns must be determined in managed landscapes. The objectives of this study were to identify proxies that allowed plant species invasion (natives and exotics) and define thresholds of human impacts to improve management. We also wanted to identify indicator species for different impacts and environments. A total of 165 plots were measured in Nothofagus antarctica forests and associated open lands (dry and wet grasslands) in Tierra del Fuego (Argentina). We found differences in the studied variables across the landscape and among different uses and impacts. Human impacts influence land types, emphasizing the importance of managing intensities. Indicator plant species allowed for the identification of potential ecological thresholds related to human impacts and the establishment of species linked to ecological and economic degradation, e.g., Bolax gummifera and Azorella trifurcata (cushion plants) were associated with high grazing pressure in grasslands and fires in forested areas, while Rumex acetosella and Achillea millefolium (erect herbs), typically associated with forested areas, were related to high harvesting pressures and fire impacts. These findings contribute to our understanding of the long-term effects of some human impacts (e.g., harvesting and ranching) and allow us to define variables of monitoring and indicator species for each impact type.

Intradermal testing and serum allergen-specific IgE-testing in cats with naturally occurring feline bronchial disease.

While feline asthma (FA) is considered to be of allergic origin, the etiology of feline chronic bronchitis (CB) to date is unknown. Aim of the study was to compare the results of intradermal testing (IDT) and serum testing for allergen-specific immunoglobulin E (SAT) in cats diagnosed with FA and CB. Twenty-seven client-owned cats with clinical signs, suggestive of feline inflammatory bronchial disease (FBD) were prospectively enrolled in the study. Patients were assigned to 3 groups based on results of bronchoalveolar-lavage-fluid (BALF)-cytology: FA (n=8), CB (n=10), or cats with a physiological BALF cytology (PB; n=9). A standardized IDT for 27 allergens was performed in all cats. In addition, allergen-specific IgE was measured in serum samples using an FcεRIα-ELISA. The number of positive reactions in both tests was compared between groups, and agreement between test results of both tests was evaluated. Regarding the number of positive reactions, no statistically significant difference was detected between groups in IDT (p=0.65) and SAT (p=0.51). When comparing the 2 test systems, a weak correlation was found for the allergens Tyrophagus putrescentiae (k=0.256), Dermatophagoides farinae (k=0.276), and rye (k=0.273). The most commonly observed reactions were to house dust mites, storage mites, rye and nettle in IDT and to sheep sorrel, storage mites, and house dust mites in SAT. IDT and SAT in cats with feline inflammatory bronchial disease (FBD) cannot be used interchangeably for allergen detection. Sensitization to environmental allergens can occur in cats with and without airway inflammation. Therefore, a positive test result should always be assessed in context with clinical signs and allergen exposure.

Synanthropic flora near the medieval Castle Kolno, Stare Kolnie, SW Poland

The medieval Castle Kolno, situated near the village of Stare Kolnie, served as a custom house at the confluence of the rivers Budkowiczanka and Stobrawa. Numerous diaspores of plants were found in archaeological excavations, in the layers of the 14th-15th centuries AD. The excavations were located near the former access road, where increased human activity has affected the composition of the fossil macroremains of plants. Two Brassica species (cabbage B. oleracea and black mustard B. nigra) cultivated in small fields near the castle were recognised. Diaspores of weeds and ruderal plants were also deposited at the site. The most frequent were: Solanum nigrum, Setaria pumila, Chenopodium album, Rumex acetosella, Persicaria lapathifolia, and Urtica dioica. The collected set of fossil diaspores is composed of plant species associated with anthropogenic habitats and shows the dispersal dynamics in various micro-niches within them.

Evelik Otunun (Rumex Acetosella) Kuzu Rasyonlarına İlavesinin Sindirim Derecesine ve Fermantasyon Parametrelerine Etkisinin In Vitro Gaz Üretim Tekniği ile Belirlenmesi

Bu çalışmada kuzu rasyonlarına artan seviyelerde alternatif bir kaba yem olarak düşünülen Evelik (Rumex acetosella) otunun, Yonca kuru otu (Medicago sativa) yerine %0, 10, 20 ve 30 oranlarında ikame edilmesinin gaz üretimi (GÜ), metan üretimi (CH4), gerçek sindirilebilir kuru madde (GSKM), partitioning factor (PF), mikrobiyal protein (MP), mikrobiyal protein sentezi etkinliği (MPSE) ve gerçek sindirim derecesi (GSD) üzerindeki etkileri belirlenmiştir. Rasyonların gaz üretimi ve sindirim dereceleri in vitro gaz üretim metodu ile tespit edilmiştir. Yapılan çalışmada gaz üretimi, GSKM, PF, MP, MPSE ve GSD miktarları artarken CH4 üretimi azalmıştır. Gerçek sindirilebilir kuru madde, PF, MP, MPSE ve GSD değerleri istatiksel olarak anlamlı bulunmuştur (P<0.05). Çalışmada GSKM, PF, MP, MPSE ve GSD değerleri sırasıyla 253.22 ile 315.86 mg, 2.84 ile 3.33, %57.42 ile %107.59, %22.68 ile % 34.04 ve %53.13 ile %66.49 arasında değişmiştir. Rasyonların Pearson korelasyon analizi, GSKM ile GÜ ve % CH4 üretimleri arasında negatif bir ilişki bulunmuştur (P<0.05). Gerçek sindirilebilir kuru madde, PF, MP ve MPSE arasında pozitif bir ilişki tespit edilmiştir (P<0.01). Mevcut çalışmanın sonuçları esas alınarak evelik otunun kuzu rasyonlarında kullanımı için uygun dozun belirlenmesi oldukça zor görülmektedir. Bunun için Evelik (Rumex acetosella) otunun kuzu performanslarına etkilerini belirlemek için in vivo denemelere ihtiyaç vardır.

A century of weed change in New Zealand’s forage seed multiplication industry

International seed trading provides a significant introductory pathway for weed seeds, and many globally established weeds originated as contaminants in agricultural seed lots. Management of these trade systems helps minimize agricultural losses and is an important means of preventing future biological incursions. Forage crop seed lots could be considered higher risk than seed lots of arable and vegetable crops, as they have been found to have a higher percentage of contaminated seed lots. Two of the most commonly used temperate forage crops worldwide are perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) and white clover (Trifolium repens). New Zealand is one of the top producers of these crop seeds globally, and both species are commonly used in New Zealand pastures. Using historical and current seed lot analytical purity test results, we examined the frequency, identity and temporal changes of weed seeds found within agricultural seed lots of perennial ryegrass and white clover grown in New Zealand from 1912 to 2019. Overall, the percentage of contaminated forage seed lots decreased between approximately three to sixfold over the study period, indicating that herbicide availability, seed certification and improved crop management have been effective for weed control. However, we identified a handful of annual weed species that could become more problematic in the future, either because they showed an increasing presence trend in seed lots or were identified as the most common contaminants. In 2019, Vulpia bromoides was the most common contaminant in perennial ryegrass seed lots, and Chenopodium album was the most common in white clover seed lots. Sherardia arvensis and Poa annua, both significant species with an increasing presence trend, had the largest increases in perennial ryegrass seed lots over the study period. Conversely, Rumex acetosella had the largest presence decline for both crop species. There was a significant difference between the percentage of contaminant species that were grass weeds between study crops, where perennial ryegrass seed lots had approximately four times more grass species than white clover. Considering New Zealand trades crop seed with approximately half of the world’s countries and contributes substantially to the global supply of forage seed, our study provides a unique insight into changes of the weed spectrum throughout the seed for sowing system over the last century.

Drivers of growth and establishment of the invasive plant Rumex acetosella within Andean fallow systems

Intensification of crop rotations and associated agricultural practices are reducing the capacity of traditional fallows to restore soil fertility and provide forage in Andean cropping systems. While the implementation of improved fallows offers great promise to enhance forage provision and maintain soil productivity, effects of these practices on the establishment of problematic weeds, including non-native plant species, remain poorly understood. To address this knowledge gap, we studied: i) how biotic and abiotic environmental factors influence the establishment and productivity of weeds in traditional fallows; and ii) to what extent improved fallows can help control weedy vegetation in smallholder rotations of the high Andes. Specifically, in this research, we focused on the invasive plant species Rumex acetosella L., which is a common concern of farmers throughout the central Peruvian Andes. We leveraged a multi-site, participatory research trial established in 2017 across eight communities in the region to understand the main drivers of R. acetosella presence and productivity. We used a total of 82 sites, each with paired treatments of traditional fallow (control with natural revegetation) and improved fallow (seeded with Vicia sativa L. and Avena sativa L.). Prior to treatment establishment we measured soil texture, pH, soil organic matter content as well as exchangeable macro-nutrients. Vegetation data was recorded in each treatment and divided into four categories: 1) A. sativa, 2) V. sativa, 3) R. acetosella, and 4) other weeds, and weighed to determine the relative biomass contribution of each. From these data, we calculated an index for R. acetosella pressure, weed pressure, and forage productivity. Our findings indicate that improved fallows greatly suppress weedy vegetation relative to unmanaged controls, including the invasive R. acetosella. Multivariate analyses suggested that R. acetosella abundance was associated with the presence of other non-planted weeds and predictors of soil fertility. The mean R. acetosella index in improved fallows was significantly lower compared to traditional fallows. We found R. acetosella biomass to be greater at lower productivity sites, i.e., those at higher elevations with cooler climates and sites with less fertile soils. Our findings indicate that if the fallow portion of a rotation is kept productive via adequate soil fertility inputs, the biomass of weeds, including the alien R. acetosella, is dramatically reduced.

Varijabilnost broja i mase 1000 semena korova prisutnog u naturalnom semenu lucerke sa različitih lokaliteta u Srbiji

Alfalfa is the most significant perennial and multi-crop forage legume in Serbia. Seed production has numerous problems, which causes high variability in seed yield. One of the problems in this production is the weed seeds that are in the natural alfalfa seed after harvesting. Minimum purity must be greater than 95 %, up to 2 % of other species are allowed, and up to 0.5 % of weeds, but no quarantine weeds such as dodder (Cuscuta.sp). Weed seeds were detected in natural alfalfa seeds: Sinapis arvensis L., Amaranthus retroflexus L., Rumex obtusifolius, L., Cuscuta campestris Yunk., Rumex acetosella L., Plantago lanceolata L., Plantago major L., Rumex crispus L., Galium aparine L., Convolvus arvensis L. as expected, the variability of the number of weed seeds detected from the seed lots over three years was high: CV% = 14.78 for wild sorghum - S. halepense (L.) Pers. In the 2022, to CV% = 65.47 for ribwort plantain - Plantago lanceolata L. in the 2020. For the weight of 1000 seeds of the examined weeds, the variability was determined from CV% = 5.869 for the ribwort plantain - Plantago lanceolata L. (year 2020), to CV% = 34.41 for yellow dock - Rumex crispus L. (year 2022).

Synthesis, characterization and evaluation of antimicrobial activities of silver nanoparticles obtained from Rumex acetosella L. (Sorrel) plant

Rumex acetosella L. (sorrel) is a plant belonging to the Polygonaceous family and is a species that grows naturally across Turkey. In this study, the characterization of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) obtained from the Rumex acetocella L. (RA) plant using the green synthesis method was performed and their antimicrobial activities were investigated. AgNPs were successfully synthesized in the first stage of the study using plant extract taken from plant samples collected from the natural growing environment. Characterization of synthesized AgNPs was performed using appropriate analytical methods (UV-vis, FT-IR, XRD, SEM-EDX, TEM, Zeta Potential and Zeta Sizer). According to the analysis results, it was determined that AgNPs had a maximum absorbance at 476 nm wavelength, a pentagonal, hexagonal, and spherical appearance, a size of 29.16 nm, and a zeta potential of -9.88 mV. The antimicrobial activities of AgNPs were tested using the microdilution technique, in which Minimum Inhibition Concentration (MIC) values were determined on gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis and gram-negative Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli bacteria and Candida albicans fungus. It showed a very strong antimicrobial effect on C. albicans, S. aureus and P. aeruginosa. Consequently, AgNPs had stronger antimicrobial activity at low concentrations and when compared to commercial antibiotics.

Evaluation of acetolactate synthase (ALS)-inhibiting herbicides for red sorrel (Rumex acetosellaL.) management in lowbush blueberry (Vaccinium angustifoliumAiton)

Red sorrel is a common herbaceous perennial weed species in lowbush blueberry fields that may be managed with acetolactate synthase (ALS)-inhibiting herbicides. Greenhouse and field experiments were established to determine the crop tolerance and potential efficacy on red sorrel of tribenuron-methyl, nicosulfuron + rimsulfuron, foramsulfuron, flazasulfuron, pyroxsulam, and halosulfuron-methyl. Ramet density of greenhouse-grown red sorrel plants established from root fragments was reduced by tribenuron-methyl, flazasulfuron, and pyroxsulam, though tribenuron-methyl and flazasulfuron were the most consistently effective herbicides under field conditions. Spring non-bearing year tribenuron-methyl and flazasulfuron applications reduced both non-bearing and bearing year total red sorrel ramet density and reduced non-bearing year red sorrel flowering ramet and seedling density without injuring lowbush blueberry. Fall non-bearing year tribenuron-methyl and flazasulfuron applications reduced bearing year red sorrel total and flowering ramet density, and this application timing should be evaluated further to improve understanding of crop injury risks. Fall bearing year tribenuron-methyl and flazasulfuron applications reduced non-bearing year red sorrel total and flowering ramet density but did not reduce seedling density. Nicosulfuron + rimsulfuron, foramsulfuron, pyroxsulam, and halosulfuron-methyl efficacy on red sorrel were inconsistent or limited, and these herbicides are not recommended for red sorrel management in lowbush blueberry.

Фитоценотическая активность видов рода Rumex L. на пойменных и суходольных лугах в Брянской области

In the article the phytocoenotic activity of species of the genus Rumex L. in the space of 5 syntaxa of meadow vegetation in the Bryansk Region assessed. Based on geobotanical materials collected in 2018–2022 two new associations and one subassociation were established, for which high activity of Rumex acetosella and R. thyrsiflorus was revealed. The maximum activity (V3–5) of R. acetosella is characterized for the ass. Koelerio delavignei–Festucetum rubrae Rumex acetosella var., R. thyrsiflorus – the ass. Trifolio arvensis–Rumicetum thyrsiflori (V1–5) and the ass. Kadenio dubiae–Rumicetum thyrsiflori (V5). R. acetosella reaches the highest abundance-coverage on dry and poor soils, while R. thyrsiflorus naturally increases the abundance-coverage under more mesophytic conditions. High activity of R. acetosella and R. thyrsiflorus was revealed in grass plant communities in xerophytized river floodplains. This change in the moisture regime against the background of a reduction in the duration and height of floods, as well as the lack of haymaking and grazing in floodplain locations in recent decades, contributed to an increase in the activity of the studied species. In the future, if the trend towards xerophytization of the floodplains persists, we can expect the stable positions of these species to remain in meadow grass stands.

Detecting common allergens in dogs with atopic dermatitis in South Korean Provinces using a serological immunoglobulin E-specific allergen test.

Background and Aim:Canine atopic dermatitis (CAD) is a hereditary susceptibility to the development of allergic symptoms in response to repeated exposure to generally innocuous substances known as “allergens.” Allergens can be plants, animals, mold, mites, or milk. At present, serological enzyme-linked immunoassay (ELISA) kits are used for immunoglobulin E (IgE)-specific allergen detection due to their simplicity and accuracy. This study aimed to detect allergens in dogs with CAD and determine how they differ according to season, breed, age, and sex using a serological test in six provinces in South Korea for 12 months. This will allow practitioners to easily understand the risk factors related to CAD.Materials and Methods:In this study, IgE allergen-specific ELISA kits were used. The allergens were detected in serum samples collected from different regions considering season, sex, breed, and age. Allergens were divided into the following Ten categories: 1. Dairy, yeast, and egg, 2. grains, 3. vegetables, 4. meat, 5. seafood, 6. animals, 7. mold, 8. insects, 9. mites, and 10. trees.Results:The percentage of allergens detected in males (54.8%) was higher than that of females (45.2%); 54.2% of allergens occurred in 3-year-old dogs or older. Moreover, regarding frequency, 65.6% of overall allergens occur during autumn; Chungcheongnam-do and Jeollabuk-do showed 20.7% and 20.9%, respectively. Additionally, among allergens categories, notable allergen occurrence was as follows: 38.3% corn; 28.7% potatoes; 22.7% duck; 24.4%,codfish; 31.2% animal wool; 95.6% Aspergillus fumigatus; 31.9% flea; 41.8% oak; and 25.0% sheep’s sorrel grass.Conclusion:This study showcases the frequency of 60 allergens in six provinces detected in dogs with CAD; most likely from food or the environment using serological ELISA kits. Environmental sensitizer results can be considered for humans suffering from allergies to avoid a similar environment. A large-scale study can be performed to evaluate the allergens in the state. However, neither a skin test nor feed analysis was conducted, which is a limitation of this study.

Improving Weed Management Based on the Timing of Emergence Peaks: A Case Study of Problematic Weeds in Northeast USA

We reviewed the timing of the peak rate of emergence for 15 problematic weed species as well as ways to use this knowledge to improve control. Much of the previous literature modeled emergence based on growing-degree-days. For these models, we input average temperature data from several zones of Northeast USA. Within species, model-predicted peak emergence in the warmest and coolest zones differed by an average of 39 days. Also within species, there was some variation between models, likely reflecting different conditions in study locations and population-level differences that will need to be addressed in future modelling efforts. Summarizing both observed and modelled results, emergence typically peaked early-season for barnyardgrass, Canada thistle, common lambsquarters, common ragweed, giant foxtail, large crabgrass, perennial sowthistle, and smooth crabgrass. Emergence typically peaked mid-season for hairy galinsoga, mouseear chickweed, and red sorrel. Emergence typically peaked late-season for annual bluegrass. Several species emerged in a protracted manner, including common chickweed, quackgrass, and redroot pigweed. With this improved knowledge, farmers may target key problematic species of a particular field in several ways. Weed seedling control efforts can be timed at the highest densities or most vulnerable phenological stage. Residual herbicides and suppressive mulches can be timed to maximize effectiveness prior to their breakdown. And if management flexibility allows, crop selection and associated planting dates may be adjusted to improve crop competition or facilitate seedbank depletion through timely bare fallow periods. Such improvements to weed management based on timing of emergence will likely become even more impactful as predictive model reliability continues to improve.

Modified Polymeric Biosorbents from Rumex acetosella for the Removal of Heavy Metals in Wastewater.

The contamination of water resources by effluents from various industries often contains heavy metals, which cause irreversible damage to the environment and health. The objective was to evaluate different biosorbents from the weed Rumex acetosella to remove metal cations in wastewater. Drying, grinding and sieving of the stems was carried out to obtain the biomass, retaining the fractions of 250 to 500 µm and 500 to 750 µm, which served to obtain the biosorbents in natura (unmodified), acidic, alkaline, and mixed. Proximal analysis, PZC, TOC, removal capacity, influence of pH, functional groups, thermal analysis, structural characteristics, adsorption isotherms, and kinetic study were evaluated. The 250 µm mixed treatment was the one that presented the highest removal percentages, mainly due to the OH, NH, -C-H, COOH, and C-O functional groups achieving the removal of up to 96.14% of lead, 36.30% of zinc, 34.10% of cadmium and 32.50% of arsenic. For contact times of 120 min and an optimum pH of 5.0, a loss of cellulose mass of 59% at 328 °C and a change in the surface of the material were also observed, which allowed for obtaining a topography with greater chelating capacity, and the Langmuir and pseudo-second order models were better fitted to the adsorption data. The new biosorbents could be used in wastewater treatment economically and efficiently.
