Performance evaluation of low energy adaptive clustering hierarchy-based cluster routing protocols in wireless sensor networks using a new graphical user interface

Wireless sensor network (WSN) is widely used for field data acquisition and monitoring in different domains. To make this type of network functional, efficient routing protocols must be implemented. Nevertheless, WSNs have an energy constraint due to limited batteries. Many clustered protocols are proposed to overcome it. However, the implementation of these protocols would be difficult to understand without a simulation tool, as some problems may arise during their development. Testing real-world applications requires a lot of effort and cost because they often use many nodes in large networks. Therefore, the simulation tool is the most relative way to evaluate these protocols. This paper presents graphical-based cluster protocols simulation interface for WSN(GCPS-WSN), a new interface to simulate some clustered protocols in WSNs. GCPS-WSN allows the user to evaluate the performance of certain low energy adaptive clustering hierarchy (LEACH) enhanced protocols to choose the most appropriate one for his system. The user can simulate protocols without any knowledge of software programming.

A Review on Energy and Latency Efficient Routing Protocol Design for Wireless Sensor Networks

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have been utilized by various industries, such as disaster management, the chemical and heavy industries, marine research, and space exploration. One of the primary challenges faced by wireless sensor networks is their limited network lifetime. Several techniques have been devised to extend the duration of network operation. This proposed method introduces a threshold-based algorithm to minimize the amount of data that needs to be transferred. In this approach, the selection of cluster heads and their sizes is not fixed. Instead, they are dynamically determined at the beginning of each iteration. The design of routing algorithms for wireless sensor networks faces three main challenges: lowering the rate at which the average node energy declines, minimizing the number of dead nodes, and eventually prolonging the network's lifetime. This paper provides a thorough examination of efficient routing protocols for wireless sensor networks with the goal of improving network longevity. Design and Development of a Hybrid Cooperative- Based Routing Protocol avoiding the void nodes in WSNs using the Concepts of Minimum Energy Consumption with good Data Security features

This paper presents a novel cooperative-based routing protocol designed for underwater Wireless Sensor Network Cloud Applications (uWSNCA). The protocol aims to minimize energy consumption by avoiding void nodes, which are areas without sensor coverage. The proposed approach consists of two main steps: first, avoiding void nodes using an adaptive hop-by-hop vector method, and second, applying a cooperative rule-based adaptive hop-by-hop vector method to create a hybrid algorithm that is more efficient than existing approaches, such as the watch-dog protocol. The research focuses on developing an energy-efficient distributed cooperative routing protocol for wireless sensor networks, specifically tailored for cooperation-based uWSNCA. This is achieved by preventing data packets from being forwarded through void nodes. The proposed routing protocol utilizes cooperation-based adaptive hop-by-hop vector-based forwarding concepts, where sensor nodes forward data packets in a multi-hop fashion within a virtual pipeline. In the developed algorithm for the underwater WSN cloud application, data packets are forwarded in a multi-hop manner using a virtual pipelining mechanism.Nodes outside the virtual pipeline do not forward data packets, thereby reducing flooding in the cooperative WSN. To prevent data packets from being forwarded towards void areas in the WSN, 2-hop information is used at each hop. This approach improves the performance of the wireless sensor network in terms of various performance criteria compared to existing routing protocols. The simulation tool NS2 is used to observe the simulation results of the energy packets being transferred from the source to the sink. The simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed methodology. Overall, this paper contributes to the field of underwater WSNs by introducing a novel routing protocol that improves energy efficiency and performance for cloud applications.

Enhanced reliability in hazardous event detection: A resilient multipath routing protocol for wireless sensor networks

AbstractWith the advance of climate change and the local effects of human activity, it has become of utmost importance to sense spatially extended natural and artificial physical phenomena to predict, monitor, and mitigate hazardous events. Wireless sensor networks are suitable for observing such phenomena, for example, wildfires, floods or landslides, without human supervision. This is due to affordable devices, independent power sources, wireless communication, and a broad range of sensors. During normal operation a few, while during the occurrence of an event a multitude of devices can fail. This leads to further disconnected devices, degrading the network's sensing capabilities. The communication requirements of such applications are difficult to fulfil with general routing protocols. The monitored event is rare compared to the network's lifetime, while its occurrence results in multiple, gradual node failures, still demanding the network to perform reliably. Available routing protocols fail to address every aspect of such application, thus the authors propose the Reliable Resilient Multipath Routing Protocol, designed to construct multiple disjoint paths from each device to a distinguished one, called the sink. The protocol employs proactive and reactive network management techniques to increase connection redundancy and maintain connectivity during failures. To verify the proposed protocol end‐to‐end, we evaluated the supported parameters, performed comparative simulations with routing algorithms known from the literature, and provided estimates of a realistic deployment.

Advancing Healthcare Networks: Optimizing Multi-Objective RPL for Diverse Traffic in Low-Power, Lossy Environments

RPL: Powering modern healthcare IoT Networks. The Routing Protocol for Low Power and Lossy Networks(RPL) is a protocol specifically designed for routing in networks characterized by low power and lossy connections built on IPv6. It is specifically designed for the growing use of Instantaneous IoT (Internet of Things) applications. These networks cater to the specialized requirements of Low Power (resource-constrained) and Lossy Networks(unstable networks), also known as LLNs, where routing data smoothly and prioritizing traffic types are the significant challenges. Studies have shown that standard RPL, which makes use of a set of routing rules, struggles to provide the level of performance that many IoT applications in modern-day healthcare demand. This limits RPL’s potential in scenarios where we have a mix of data traffic, which is very common in healthcare settings. To handle the diverse data traffic found in healthcare settings, our method involves distributing several instances of RPL settings throughout the network. The main objective of this strategy is to improve the effectiveness of important and critical healthcare applications. We have developed and thoroughly tested our system using Contiki, which is an open-source IoT operating system. We have three instances in our MultiInstance RPL setup, each of which is intended to handle different kinds of network traffic and provide varying Quality of Service (QoS) measures. Different sets of Objective Function (OF) rules are used by each instance to decide which route is optimal for the data it processes. We have made use of OF0 (Objective Function 0) and MRHOF (Minimum Rank with Hysteresis Objective Function). We have rigorously tested our solution. Our focus has been on metrics like delay, average energy consumption and Packet Delivery Ratio (PDR). Compared to standard RPL, our approach improved packet delivery rates and significantly reduced delays for high priority data packets. This research shows how to better address the complex data traffic needs of real-time healthcare IoT networks.

An Intrusion Detection System against RPL-based Routing Attacks for IoT Networks

<span lang="EN-US">The significant improvement in the Internet, Internet of Things (IoT), communication, and cloud computing have created considerable challenges in providing security for data and devices. In IoT networks, “Routing Protocol for Low power and Lossy networks”- (RPL) is a communication protocol that enables devices to exchange information and communicate with limited resources like low processing capabilities, less memory and energy. Through the Internet, unauthorised users can access RPL-based IoT networks, making these networks susceptible to routing attacks. Therefore, it is crucial to design Intrusion Detection System-(IDS) to address attacks from IoT communication devices. In this paper, we have proposed GCNConv, a Graph Neural Network (GNN) method that allows capturing the edge and node features of a graph to identify routing attacks. The proposed system has experimented on the RADAR dataset and experimental findings proved that, our approach performs well compared to state-of-the-art method with reference to precision, F1-score, accuracy and recall.</span>

A Taxonomy and Survey on Grid-Based Routing Protocols Designed for Wireless Sensor Networks

Minimization of energy consumption is the main attention of researchers while developing a routing protocol for wireless sensor networks, as sensor nodes are equipped with limited power supply. Virtual topology is an integral part of routing, and grid-based routing protocols are quite popular due to their simplified and efficient virtual grid topology construction. Although a list of surveys exists that either focus on routing protocols in a broader way or on other virtual topologies, none of these surveys are concerned about grid topology and grid-based routing protocols. Having this motivation in mind and considering the impact of these routing protocols on controlling and managing the energy consumption of wireless sensor networks, this article provides an expansive assessment of grid-based routing protocols based on their methodology. In this survey, the existing grid-based routing protocols are classified into two categories from the perspective of sink mobility: static sink and mobile sink. A phase-wise comprehensive overview of these routing protocols is provided in chronological order, along with their comparative analysis. Furthermore, the characteristics, design issues, and challenges of grid-based routing protocols are also provided.

Design of a load balancing Objective Function for RPL

Routing protocols for Internet of Things (IoT) play a major role in the performance of the network. The standard Routing Protocol for Low-Power and Lossy Networks (RPL) suffers from a number of limitations including congestion of higher-level nodes and unbalanced topology. This paper proposes a novel Objective Function called Load Balanced Minimum Rank with Hysteresis Objective Function (LB_MRHOF), which assigns child nodes to the most suitable parent in the topology. The Objective Function utilizes a weight of the Expected Transmission Count (ETX) and number of children to calculate the Composite ETX and Number of Children (CENOC) which estimates the load on each node. The attained CENOC is used to select the optimum parent for each node in the topology, where nodes with high CENOC are avoided in the parent selection process. The proposed Objective Function has been evaluated under random and hierarchical network topologies. In addition, the evaluation has investigated the influence of the number of nodes by testing for small, medium and large-scale networks. Results have shown that the proposed Objective Function outperforms MRHOF, OF_FUZZY and OF-EC in terms of Packet Delivery Ratio (PDR) and reduces nodal hop-count under all tested scenarios, with no compromise in energy consumption. They have also revealed that the best performance achieved by LB_MRHOF is attained under large-scale networks. The resulting network topology which is formed by the proposed Objective Function has shown improved balance and more depth.

EVRP: A novel geometrical based energy efficient eye vision routing protocol for wireless sensor networks based on the k-means algorithm

The limited energy source used in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) is a crucial aspect when designing a routing protocol. Developing a routing protocol that tries to maximize energy utilization can significantly improve the system's lifetime and balance energy consumption. A novel geometrical-based energy-efficient routing protocol called "EVRP" is presented in this paper. The Cluster generation process is based on the k-means algorithm for nodes grouping. To choose a cluster head (CH) for each cluster, a cost function is calculated for each node considering factors such as remaining energy level for the node, and the mean distance between the node and its neighbors. In the inter-cluster routing phase, a novel geometrical-based routing protocol is introduced considering factors such as the distance to a base station (BS), remaining energy level, and distance between CHs to find the optimal path between BS and CH. The cluster structure is integrated with direct communication in addition to a dynamic clustering mechanism based on the optimum number of CHs and a load balancing mechanism to reduce the load on CHs near BS. The simulation results demonstrate that in different scenarios, the proposed protocol can significantly increase the network lifetime, network throughput, and network stability by 52 %, 45 %, and 30 % respectively compared with the EECRAIFA protocol and by 100 %, 97.6 %, 64.3 % respectively compared with D2CRP protocol.

An intelligent fuzzy enabled parent node selection approach in low power networks

The Internet of Things lies in establishing low-power and lossy networks created by interconnecting many wireless devices with limited resources. Fascinatingly, an IPv6 routing protocol for low-power and lossy networks has become a common practice for these applications. Even though this protocol addresses the challenges of low-power networks, many issues concerning the quality of service and energy consumption are open to the research community. The protocol relies on a destination-oriented directed acyclic graph, and the root selection depends on some constraints and metrics associated with an objective function (OF). The conventional OFs select parents based on a single metric, such as the expected transmission count or the number of nodes to travel. The current paper proposes an enhancement to the OF metric, aiming to decrease node energy and enhance the quality of service. This improvement is achieved by the factors, including the received signal strength indicator, node distance, power, link quality indicator, and expected transmission count, to select reliable communication links. The minimum power needed for reliable communication is predicted from the received signal strength indicator, node distance, receiver power, and link quality indicator using a nonlinear support vector machine. The OF value of the candidate node is computed from the power level and expected transmission count combined using the Takagi-Sugeno fuzzy model. The proposed OF is implemented in the Cooja simulator and compared against minimum rank with hysteresis OF and OF zero. A considerable improvement in the packet delivery ratio and a 37.5% reduction in energy consumption is obtained.

ARPMEC: an adaptive mobile edge computing-based routing protocol for IoT networks

AbstractThe Internet of Things (IoT) networks comes with many challenges, especially in network architecture designs. IoT is populated by several kinds of devices with different characteristics that are autonomously managed. These devices do not have enough resources and they require to process data in real-time. Hence, there is a need to design suitable architectures for IoT networks that are as efficient as possible. Previously, Cloud Computing (CC) seemed to provide a good solution of processing data from IoT networks. Recently, Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) seems to be offering a better solution than CC by ensuring a better Quality of Services (QoS) provisioning. As a result, many MEC solutions have emerged for QoS improvement in IoT networks. These solutions mainly focus on device resource management without considering data routing from an end-user device to another, especially when the latter are mobile and need to communicate with each other. In this paper, we propose to design an adaptive routing protocol for a MEC-based network to manage efficiently, the end-user devices’ energy consumption during data routing. The proposed adaptive Mobile Edge Computing-based protocol consists of two main phases: firstly, we subdivide the network’s objects into clusters by exploiting a link quality prediction algorithm. Secondly, we route the data to their destination adaptively by considering the object’s movement during the routing process. As presented in the simulation results, our protocol outperforms other existing routing protocols for IoT networks in terms of energy consumption. We then propose the use of our solution for data routing in IoT networks that require huge data processing and forwarding.

To Design a Routing Module for IoT Routing Protocols to Address Modification and Manipulation Attacks

Internet of Things devices have become increasingly prevalent in various domains, including smart homes, healthcare, transportation, and industrial automation. As the number of IoT devices continues to grow, so does the potential for security challenges. Routing protocols play a critical role in IoT networks by determining the path for packet transmission. However, their susceptibility to modification and manipulation attacks can have far-reaching consequences. These attacks can lead to unauthorized access to sensitive data, disruption of critical services, and even physical harm in certain applications such as healthcare and industrial automation. This paper presents the design and implementation of a security-enhanced routing module aimed at protecting Internet of Things networks from modification and manipulation attacks, particularly focusing on the challenges within the IPv6 Routing Protocol for Low-Power and Lossy Networks. Acknowledging the increasing pervasiveness of IoT devices and their susceptibility to routing disruptions, this work contributes a novel approach to augment RPL's Lamport’s Keyed Hash Chain scheme security posture without impinging on the protocol's inherent resource-efficiency. Through a comprehensive simulation-based system verification process, the module demonstrates its effectiveness in mitigating common routing attacks, its adaptability in dynamic network conditions, and its fidelity to established RPL performance metrics

Trust Enabled Cluster Aware Routing Protocol Design with Energy Considerations using Fuzzy Strategies

In this modern era, wireless communication technologies are getting high impact over network industries. Due to this drastic development of communication technologies, a network needs to be more precise with certain metric such as: energy consumption, throughput, trust management, performance and lifetime. These are all the primary concern while handling the transactions with wireless communication systems. In this paper, a new approach of network routing protocol is introduced, which will replace the issues found in existing routing protocols and provide good support while communication between entities. The proposed paper introduces a new routing protocol called Modified Adhoc On-Demand Distance Vector (MAODV), in which the classic AODV protocol supports mobile nodes with several impacts such as mobility, failure prevention, loss management and so on. However, the issues in industry still remains, so, that a new approach or routing protocol is required to overcome such issues. This is the concern to develop a new routing protocol for establishing communication between mobile nodes or wireless devices. The drastic development of communication devices requires some latest technologies to provide range free communication model with the assistance of internet support. A term, 'Internet of Things (IoT)', which rules the world now-a-days through its power of connectivity and establishing the bridge between communication devices around the globe without any range restrictions. In this paper, a cluster based routing strategy is designed with the help of fuzzy assistance. The cluster based routing protocols divides the range of communication into clusters and electing the cluster head based on the communication needs and provides a range free communication model with the hands of IoT support. This cluster based routing model provides support for both inter and intra-cluster communications, which all will be brief in further sections. The proposed model of wireless communication assures the following things such as Improved Energy Efficiency, reduced packet loss and delay, improved throughput ratio and lifetime over resulting scenario with the help of a new algorithm called Fuzzy Assisted Cluster enabled Routing Model (FACeRM) with the association of new routing protocol MAODV.

Multi-hop clustering routing protocol design based on simultaneous wireless information and power transfer technology and imperfect spectrum sensing for EH-CRSNs

Existing clustering routing protocols for multi-hop energy harvesting-cognitive radio sensor networks (EH-CRSNs) generally assume perfect spectrum sensing, which is not aligned with the practical spectrum sensing capabilities of nodes in real networks. Additionally, the severe imbalance in residual energy among cluster heads (CHs) negatively affects the successful data delivery. To resolve these problems, this paper introduces a simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT)- and imperfect spectrum sensing-based multi-hop clustering routing protocol (ES-ISSMCRP). ES-ISSMCRP makes full use of downlink EH and intra-cluster SWIPT technologies to replenish and equalize the remaining energy among nodes, further extending network lifespan while maintaining network surveillance capabilities. Specifically, to reduce the adverse impact of imperfect spectrum sensing on network performance and improve energy utilization, this paper proposes an EH-based energy level function and associated selection criteria for CHs and relays, facilitating distributed cluster formation and multi-hop routing selection between clusters. To equalize the residual energy among nodes within a cluster, ES-ISSMCRP protocol enables cluster members (CMs) to decide whether employ SWIPT technology with a power splitting (PS) receiver architecture to transmit energy to their CH while sending data. The actual energy value transmitted by CMs using SWIPT technology is deduced by calculating the PS ratio and the expected energy expenditure of nodes for data transmission. Simulation results show that ES-ISSMCRP protocol offers significant improvements over other comparative protocols in terms of extending network lifespan and enhancing network surveillance capabilities.

An optimized crypto‐based routing protocol for secure routing in wireless sensor networks

SummaryIn Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN), energy‐efficient, reliable routing is the core objective for the data transmission process. Anomaly nodes in the communication environment can affect reliable routing and network efficiency. Therefore, the present research created a novel Arithmetic Optimization‐based Rumor Routing Protocol with SKINNY Crypto mechanism (AORRP‐SCrypt) for secure Routing in WSN. Primarily, the required nodes are deployed in the related WSN environment. The arithmetic function traced the nodes' higher energy consumption and malicious action to avoid security vulnerabilities during data transmission. The sensed data packets are transmitted based on the Rumor routing function of the proposed system. Furthermore, to avoid data access by unauthorized users, it is encrypted using the SKINNY Crypto mechanism. Finally, the network efficiency and security performance are validated in the NS3 platform. The model gained 98.1% network throughput, 95.6% PDR, a lower energy consumption of between 0.001 and 0.01 J, and a 99% confidentiality rate. The developed system provided increased network security and efficiency.
