Good Practices in Aligning Software Engineering Research and Industry Practice

There is a long-standing challenge to narrow the gap between software engineering research and industry practice, to align their interests and realize true synergies between the two communities. Some difficulties to this challenge include mismatched agendas, priorities and expectations from the research collaboration on both sides. To overcome these difficulties, an initial step is to gain a clearer understanding of collaboration challenges from both perspectives. With this goal in mind, we organized the 5th International Workshop on Software Engineering Research and Industrial Practice, collocated with the International Conference on Software Engineering 2018. The workshop featured two keynote talks, one from industry and one from academia, followed by paper presentations and a round-table discussion session. Here we summarize experiences shared by the keynotes from industry and academia, along with findings from paper presentations and overall discussions by workshop participants on the ways of aligning software engineering research and industry practice.

HOW TO PUBLISH: ROUNDTABLE DISCUSSIONS WITH JOURNAL EDITORS

AbstractPart III of this ‘How to Publish’ symposium will include a 35 minute round table discussion session beginning with identification of participants available to facilitate discussions. Participants will include editors-in chief, deputy and/or, associate editors from the following journals: Journals of Gerontology-Series A: Medical Sciences; Journals of Gerontology-Series B: Psychological and Social Sciences; Innovations in Aging, The Gerontologist, Gerontology and Geriatrics Education, European Journal of Ageing, Journal of Aging and Social Policy, Research on Aging, and Journal of Applied Gerontology. Participants will provide journal specific information and answer questions related to podium presentation topics and others raised, e.g., writing strategies for specific journals, how editorial decisions are made, etc. Representatives from Oxford University Press will also be available to discuss in greater detail strategies for assessing and maximizing the impact of published work. Attendees will be encouraged to visit as many tables as they are able during this time.

Mix and match: Investigating heteromeric and heterotypic gap junction channels in model systems and native tissues

This review is based in part on a roundtable discussion session: "Physiological roles for heterotypic/heteromeric channels" at the 2013 International Gap Junction Conference (IGJC 2013) in Charleston, South Carolina. It is well recognized that multiple connexins can specifically co-assemble to form mixed gap junction channels with unique properties as a means to regulate intercellular communication. Compatibility determinants for both heteromeric and heterotypic gap junction channel formation have been identified and associated with specific connexin amino acid motifs. Hetero-oligomerization is also a regulated process; differences in connexin quality control and monomer stability are likely to play integral roles to control interactions between compatible connexins. Gap junctions in oligodendrocyte:astrocyte communication and in the cardiovascular system have emerged as key systems where heterotypic and heteromeric channels have unique physiologic roles. There are several methodologies to study heteromeric and heterotypic channels that are best applied to either heterologous expression systems, native tissues or both. There remains a need to use and develop different experimental approaches in order to understand the prevalence and roles for mixed gap junction channels in human physiology.

The Open PSA Initiative for next generation probabilistic safety assessment

Abstract The Open PSA Initiative round table discussion session is to bring the PSA community up-to-date on our meetings, workshops, and working groups during the last year. We will have members of the initiative speak on their point of view of the initiative, what they have gained, and where we as a group want to go during the next year. The main idea is to use appropriate modules of different computer codes for a specific purpose which requires a common platform and a common PSA format. In this short paper we introduce our main project for this year: the Open PSA Model Exchange Format.

Consensus‐based policy recommendations for geriatric emergency care

The purpose of this paper is to establish policy recommendations to address service and care delivery challenges facing hospital emergency departments (EDs) responding to the needs of increasing numbers of older adults. The consensus development process used an international expert interdisciplinary panel, convened at an international conference. Following a round table discussion and think-tank session, a nominal group method with constant comparative analysis and coding techniques was used to identify policy recommendations. Two rounds of electronic input followed the face-to-face meeting to reach consensus on priority ranking of the policy recommendations. Findings underwent an external review by four independent experts. A total of seven categories of policy recommendations were developed: education, integration and coordination of care, resources, ED physical environment, evidence-based practice, research and evaluation, and advocacy. The consensus development process did not include a systematic literature review on the topic. However, participants included experts in their disciplines. The recommendations may assist administrators, policy makers, clinicians, and researchers on future directions for improving emergency care and service delivery for older adults. The paper describes the process and results of a consensus development activity for ED care and services of older adults.

On the relevance of the coupling model to experiments

The research field of the glass transition is experimentally driven. There is an abundance ofexperimental data and facts accumulated in the past as well as the emergence of importantnew results every now and then. Therefore, when judging theories and models of the glasstransition, it is fair to ask the question of their relevance to experiments. Thisquestion was one of the themes of a round-table discussion session entitled Anassessment of current theories: interconnections and relevance to experiments,organized at the 4th Workshop on Non-equilibrium Phenomena in SupercooledFluids, Glasses and Amorphous Materials (4th WNEP). The coupling model has ahistory of making connections of its theoretical results with many experimentalfacts on dynamics of glass-forming substances. This characteristic of the couplingmodel is demonstrated herein by using it to explain or rationalize some of the newexperimental data reported at the 4th WNEP and published in this volume andelsewhere.

On the potential causal relationship between gadolinium‐containing MRI agents and nephrogenic systemic fibrosis

THERE IS GROWING INTERNATIONAL CONCERN related to the possibility that gadolinium-containing MRI agents are or may be associated with nephrogenic systemic fibrosis (NSF). Nephrogenic systemic fibrosis is known to be a rare multisystem fibrosis disorder that primarily affects the skin but may affect other organs of patients with renal insufficiencies. The opinions expressed in recent publications vary related to the determination of whether intravenous gadolinium-containing MR agents are definitely, possibly, or conditionally associated with the development of NSF. The literature has a range of opinions, a few of which are described here. A recent article in the American Journal of Roentgenology concludes that the development of NSF is strongly associated with gadodiamide administration in the clinical setting of either acute hepatorenal syndrome or dialysis-dependent chronic renal insufficiency (1). A different opinion, stated in the guest editorial published in this issue, stresses that the exposure to gadolinium-containing agents is not currently a proven prerequisite for the onset of NSF (2). Also, in their recent review of 3D contrast-enhanced MR angiography, Zhang et al (3) suggest that gadolinium-based contrast agents do not pose a risk for nephrotoxicity. However, in a letter to the editor that is currently in press with JMRI (4), this suggestion has been challenged. The authors of the letter to the editor note that gadolinium-based contrast agents might induce NSF, a newly identified, debilitating, and potentially fatal disorder (5) in patients with renal insufficiencies. They urge practitioners to stay updated about this emerging disorder and to follow appropriate recommendations. In an article published in this issue, Lin and Brown (6) state that the causal link between high dose gadolinium-containing agents and NSF has not been proven. That article refers to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommendation that cautious use of any gadolinium in patients with advanced renal failure be applied. This article also recommends that if contrast-enhanced MR examination is necessary, the dose should be limited and dialysis should be promptly performed (7). In addition, the American College of Radiology has just issued guidelines for the utilization of gadolinium-containing MRI contrast agents in patients with renal disease (8). Clearly, consensus is needed concerning the risks and recommended safety guidelines for contrast-enhanced MRI studies. Through JMRI and the society, ISMRM, and its members whom we serve, we have both the opportunity and the responsibility to communicate new and accurate information. This can involve maintaining a balance between disseminating reports with documented credibility related to any MRI issue—including contrast enhancement—while not prematurely raising anxiety with data that are or may be currently incomplete or evolving. With the goal of achieving this balance, JMRI is pleased to participate in and enable peer review for scientific articles and data that result from the special round table discussion and poster session that have been developed for the annual ISMRM/ESMRMB meeting in Berlin on the topic of the potential causal relationship between gadolinium-containing MRI agents and nephrogenic systemic fibrosis (NSF). The round table discussion is scheduled for Tuesday, May 22, 13:30–15:30 hours, and the poster session is scheduled for Thursday, May 24, 14:50–15:30 hours. We anticipate reviewing and potentially publishing in JMRI a summary of conclusions and recommendations that come from these sessions, together with peer-reviewed, revised, and accepted scientific papers on the subject, which we hope to group together in a special section, or possibly in a special issue of JMRI. I encourage each interested ISMRM member's active participation in dialogue related to this topic, including the round table discussion and poster session in Berlin this month. Letters to the editor are welcome! Together we seek the finest scientific data and the finest clinical investigations that can result in appropriate guidelines or boundary conditions for the safe utilization of gadolinium-containing MRI contrast agents in all patients, especially those with severe renal disease.
