The response of physiological and xylem anatomical traits under cadmium stress in Pinus thunbergii seedlings.

Studying the response of physiological and xylem anatomical traits under cadmium stress is helpful to understand plants' response to heavy metal stress. Here, seedlings of Pinus thunbergii Parl. were treated with 50, 100 and 150mg kg-1 Cd2+ for 28days. Cadmium and nonstructural carbohydrate content of leaves, stems and roots, root Cd2+ flux, cadmium distribution pattern in stem xylem and phloem, stem xylem hydraulic traits, cell wall component fractions of stems and roots, phytohormonal content such as abscisic acid, gibberellic acid 3, molecule -indole-3-acetic acid, and jasmonic acid from both leaves and roots, as well as xylem anatomical traits from both stems and roots were measured. Root Cd2+ flux increased from 50 to 100mmol L-1 Cd2+ stress, however it decreased at 150mmol L-1 Cd2+. Cellulose and hemicellulose in leaves, stems and roots did not change significantly under cadmium stress, while pectin decreased significantly. The nonstructural carbohydrate content of both leaves and stems showed significant changes under cadmium stress while the root nonstructural carbohydrate content was not affected. In both leaves and roots, the abscisic acid content significantly increased under cadmium stress, while the gibberellic acid 3, indole-3-acetic acid and jasmonic acid methylester content significantly decreased. Both xylem specific hydraulic conductivity and xylem water potential decreased with cadmium stress, however tracheid diameter and double wall thickness of the stems and roots were not affected. High cadmium intensity was found in both the stem xylem and phloem in all cadmium stressed treatments. Our study highlighted the in situ observation of cadmium distribution in both the xylem and phloem, and demonstrated the instant response of physiological traits such as xylem water potential, xylem specific hydraulic conductivity, root Cd2+ flux, nonstructural carbohydrate content, as well as phytohormonal content under cadmium stress, and the less affected traits such as xylem anatomical traits, cellulose and hemicellulose.

Coupled hydraulics and carbon economy underlie age-related growth decline and revitalisation of sand-fixing shrubs after crown removal.

Crown removal revitalises sand-fixing shrubs that show declining vigour with age in drought-prone environments; however, the underlying mechanisms are poorly understood. Here, we addressed this knowledge gap by comparing the growth performance, xylem hydraulics and plant carbon economy across different plant ages (10, 21 and 33 years) and treatments (control and crown removal) using a representative sand-fixing shrub (Caragana microphylla Lam.) in northern China. We found that growth decline with plant age was accompanied by simultaneous decreases in soil moisture, plant hydraulic efficiency and photosynthetic capacity, suggesting that these interconnected changes in plant water relations and carbon economy were responsible for this decline. Following crown removal, quick resprouting, involving remobilisation of root nonstructural carbohydrate reserves, contributed to the reconstruction of an efficient hydraulic system and improved plant carbon status, but this became less effective in older shrubs. These age-dependent effects of carbon economy and hydraulics on plant growth vigour provide a mechanistic explanation for the age-related decline and revitalisation of sand-fixing shrubs. This understanding is crucial for the development of suitable management strategies for shrub plantations constructed with species having the resprouting ability and contributes to the sustainability of ecological restoration projects in water-limited sandy lands.

Contrasting coordination of non-structural carbohydrates with leaf and root economic strategies of alpine coniferous forests.

Non-structural carbohydrates (NSCs), as the labile fraction and dominant carbon currency, are essential mediators of plant adaptation to environments. However, whether and how NSC coordinates with plant economic strategy frameworks, particularly the well-recognized leaf economics spectrums (LES) and root economics space (RES), remains unclear. We examined the relationships between NSC and key plant economics traits in leaves and fine roots across 90 alpine coniferous populations on the Tibetan Plateau, China. We observed contrasting coordination of NSC with economics traits in leaves and roots. Leaf total NSC and soluble sugar aligned with the leaf economic spectrum, conveying a trade-off between growth and storage in leaves. However, NSC in roots was independent of the root economic spectrum, but highly coordinated with root foraging, with more starch and less sugar in forage-efficient, thinner roots. Further, NSC-trait coordination in leaves and roots was, respectively, driven by local temperature and precipitation. These findings highlight distinct roles of NSC in shaping the above- and belowground multidimensional economics trait space, and NSC-based carbon economics provides a mechanistic understanding of how plants adapt to heterogeneous habitats and respond to environmental changes.

Tree seedling shade tolerance arises from interactions with microbes and is mediated by functional traits

Shade tolerance is a central concept in forest ecology and strongly influences forest community dynamics. However, the plant traits and conditions conferring shade tolerance are yet to be resolved. We propose that shade tolerance is shaped not only by responses to light but also by a species’ defense and recovery functional traits, soil microbial communities, and interactions of these factors with light availability. We conducted a greenhouse experiment for three temperate species in the genus Acer that vary in shade tolerance. We grew newly germinated seedlings in two light levels (2% and 30% sun) and controlled additions of microbial filtrates using a wet-sieving technique. Microbial filtrate treatments included: <20 µm, likely dominated by pathogenic microbes; 40-250 µm, containing arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF); combination, including both filtrate sizes; and sterilized combination. We monitored survival for nine weeks and measured fine root AMF colonization, hypocotyl phenolics, stem lignin, and stem+root nonstructural carbohydrates (NSC) at three-week intervals. We found that differences in seedling survival between low and high light only occurred when microbes were present. AMF colonization, phenolics, and NSC generally increased with light. Phenolics were greater with <20 µm microbial filtrate, suggesting that soil-borne pathogens may induce phenolic production; and NSC was greater with 40-250 µm filtrate, suggesting that mycorrhizal fungi may induce NSC production. Across species, microbe treatments, and light availability, survival increased as phenolics and NSC increased. Therefore, shade tolerance may be explained by interactions among soil-borne microbes, seedling traits, and light availability, providing a more mechanistic and trait-based explanation of shade tolerance and thus forest community dynamics.

Genome size is strongly linked to carbohydrate storage and weakly linked to root sprouting ability in herbs.

Several lines of evidence indicate that carbohydrate storage in plant below-ground organs might be positively related to genome size because both these plant properties represent resource sinks and can affect cell size, cell cycle time, water-use efficiency and plant growth. However, plants adapted to disturbance, such as root sprouters, could be an exception because their strategy would require higher carbohydrate reserves to fuel biomass production but small genomes to complete their cell cycles faster. We used data from a field survey to test the relationship between genome size and the probability of root sprouting ability in 172 Central European herbaceous species. Additionally, we conducted a pot experiment with 19 herbaceous species with different sprouting ability (nine congeneric pairs plus one species), and measured root non-structural carbohydrate concentrations and pools at the end of a growing season. In the Central European flora, the probability of root sprouting ability was lower in large-genome species but this pattern was weak. In the pot experiment, both total non-structural and water-soluble carbohydrates (mainly fructans) were positively and non-linearly related to genome size, regardless of sprouting strategy. The concentrations of mono- and disaccharides and all carbohydrate pools showed no link to genome size, and starch was absent in large-genome species. The link between genome size and carbohydrate storage was less apparent at a small phylogenetic scale because we only observed a higher carbohydrate concentration in species with larger genomes for four of the species pairs. Root sprouters may have smaller genomes because of their frequent occurrence in dry and open habitats. Large-genome species with presumably large cells and vacuoles could accumulate more water-soluble carbohydrates at the end of the growing season to fuel their growth and perhaps protect vulnerable organs from freezing early in the next season.

Quantifying the effects of precipitation exclusion and groundwater drawdown on functional traits of Haloxylon ammodendron — How does this xeric shrub survive the drought?

The increasing frequency of drought and decline in groundwater levels are causing ecophysiological changes in woody plants, particularly in desert ecosystems in arid regions. However, the combined effects of meteorological and hydrological droughts on perennial desert plants, especially phreatophytes, remain poorly understood. To address this knowledge gap, we conducted a 5-year precipitation exclusion experiment at two sites with contrasting groundwater depths in the Gurbantunggut Desert located in northwest China. Our study aimed to investigate the impacts of precipitation exclusion and groundwater depth decline on multiple traits of H. ammodendron. We found that long-term precipitation exclusion enhanced midday leaf water potential, stomatal conductance, chlorophyll content, root nonstructural carbohydrates concentration, leaf starch concentration, but decreased water use efficiency. Groundwater drawdown decreased predawn and midday leaf water potentials, maximum net photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance, Huber value, stem water δ18O, but enhanced water use efficiency and branch nonstructural carbohydrates concentration. A combination of precipitation exclusion and groundwater depth decline reduced Huber value, but did not show exacerbated effects. The findings demonstrate that hydrological drought induced by groundwater depth decline poses a greater threat to the survival of H. ammodendron than future changes in precipitation.

Divergent role of nutrient availability in determining drought responses of sessile oak and Scots pine seedlings: evidence from 13C and 15N dual labeling.

Increased soil nutrient availability can promote tree growth while drought impairs metabolic functioning and induces tree mortality. However, limited information is available about the role of nutrients in the drought responses of trees. A greenhouse experiment was conducted with sessile oak (Quercus petraea (Matt.) Liebl) and Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) seedlings, which were subjected to three fertilization treatments in the first year and two water regimes in the second year. Old and newly fixed carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) allocation were traced by dual labeling with 13C and 15N tracers, respectively, at two time points. Leaf gas exchange, biomass, as well as N and nonstructural carbohydrate (NSC) concentrations of all organs were measured. Fertilization predisposed sessile oak to drought-induced mortality, mainly by prioritizing aboveground growth, C and N allocation, reducing root NSC concentrations and decreasing old C contribution to new growth of leaves. In contrast, fertilization did not additionally predispose Scots pine to drought, with minor effects of fertilization and drought on newly fixed and old C allocation, tissues N and NSC concentrations. The role of nutrients for drought responses of trees seems to be species-specific. Therefore, we suggest nutrient availability and species identity to be considered in the framework of physiological mechanisms affecting drought-induced mortality.

The effect of experimental warming on fine root functional traits of woody plants: Data synthesis

Fine root traits are critical to plant nutrition and water uptake, and soil nutrient cycling. The impacts of climate warming on woody plants are predicted to be severe, but the effects on the fine root traits of woody plants remain unclear. To evaluate the effects of warming on fine-root traits of woody plants, we synthesized 431 paired observations of 13 traits from 78 studies. The result showed that warming increased the fine root nitrogen (N) concentration, root mortality, and root respiration, but decreased fine root phosphorus (P) concentration, root C:N and root nonstructural carbohydrates (NSC) concentration. However, warming had no significant effect on fine root biomass, root production and morphological traits. Warming effects on fine root biomass and root diameter decreased with warming magnitude, while root P concentration increased. Moreover, with increasing warming duration, the effect size of specific root length (SRL), root length, root C:N and root NSC increased. The effects size of root biomass, root diameter, root length and root C:N decreased with mean annual temperature (MAT) and mean annual precipitation (MAP) increase. However, the effect size of root N concentration increased with higher MAT and MAP. Furthermore, warming increased the fine root biomass of ectomycorrhiza (ECM) plants, but decreased that of plants associated with arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi. These results indicate that the effect of warming on fine root traits of woody plants was not only modulated by warming duration and magnitude, but also MAT and MAP. Our findings highlight the differential warming responses to fine root traits of woody plants, which have strong implications for shrubs and tree-dominated ecosystems soil nutrients cycling and carbon stocks.

Nitrogen Addition Alleviates Cadmium Toxicity in Eleocarpus glabripetalus Seedlings

Cadmium (Cd) accumulation in soil is a serious form of heavy metal pollution affecting environmental safety and human health. In order to clarify the tolerance mechanisms to Cd-contaminated soils under N deposition, changes in plant growth, root architecture and physiological characteristics of Eleocarpus glabripetalus seedlings under combined nitrogen (N) and cadmium (Cd) treatments were determined in this study. The results indicated that Cd-induced negative effects inhibited the growth of E. glabripetalus seedlings through increased underground biomass allocation, and affected transpiration and respiratory processes, resulting in a decreased soluble sugars concentration in leaves and non-structural carbohydrates (NSC) in the roots. Root systems might play a major role in Cd absorption. Cd stress restricted the growth of fine roots (<0.5 mm), and affected the uptake of N and P. N addition alleviated the Cd-induced negative effect on plant growth through improving the root system, increasing starch and NSC contents in the roots and increasing total biomass. These findings have important implications for understanding the underlying tolerance mechanisms of Cd pollution under N deposition in arbor species.

Non-structural carbohydrates contributed to cold tolerance and regeneration of Medicago sativa L.

Soil water content only affected regeneration time, whereas the NSC content was related to the success of alfalfa regeneration. Non-structural carbohydrates (NSCs) are important factors influencing the overwintering and regeneration of alfalfa. In this study, we analyzed eight in-situ samplings at three depths of coarse roots (crown, 20 and 40cm depths) during the overwintering period and assessed the dynamic change and allocation of root NSCs under three irrigation frequencies (irrigation once every second day/4days/8days). Primary results showed that: (i) before cold acclimation, irrigation once every second day was beneficial to the accumulation of soluble sugars and starch in crown tissues, which would be maintained until the following spring and accelerate the regeneration time of alfalfa; (ii) during the overwintering process, the soluble sugars and starch contents in the crown were significantly higher than those in deeper roots, and there was an asynchronous effect caused by the change in soluble sugars and starch among roots at three depths; and (iii) the change trend of soluble sugar and starch contents was consistent with that of semi-lethal temperature, and there was a significant negativecorrelation between the content of soluble sugar (R2 = 0.8046) and starch (R2 = 0.6332) and the semi-lethal temperature. This study demonstrated that NSCs are the key driver of cold tolerance and regeneration under the three irrigation frequencies evaluated. Our results provide further insight into the allocation of NSCs in winter. This improved understanding of the mechanism of overwintering will allow for improved water management of alfalfa in high latitude areas.

Intrinsic morphology and spatial distribution of non-structural carbohydrates contribute to drought resistance of two mulberry cultivars.

Drought is one of the most adverse environmental stresses limiting plant growth and productivity. However, the underlying mechanisms regarding non-structural carbohydrates (NSCs) metabolism in source and sink organs are still not fully elucidated in woody trees. Saplings of mulberry cultivars Zhongshen1 and Wubu were subjected to a 15-day progressive drought stress. NSCs levels and gene expressions involved in NSCs metabolism were investigated in roots and leaves. The growth performance and photosynthesis, leaf stomatal morphology, and other physiological parameters were also analyzed. Under well-watered conditions, Wubu had higher root-to-shoot ratio (R/S) with higher NSCs in leaves than roots, while Zhongshen1 exhibited lower R/S with higher NSCs in roots than leaves. Under drought stress, Zhongshen1 showed decreased productivity and increased concentrations of proline, abscisic acid, reactive oxygen species and activities of antioxidant enzymes, while Wubu sustained comparable productivity and photosynthesis. Interestingly, drought resulted in decreased levels of starch and slightly increased soluble sugars in leaves of Wubu, accompanied by notable downregulation of starch-synthesizing genes and upregulation of starch-degrading genes. The similar patterns in NSCs levels and relevant gene expressions were also observed in roots of Zhongshen1. Concurrently decreased soluble sugars and unchanged starch in roots of Wubu and leaves of Zhongshen1 were found. However, the gene expressions of starch metabolism in roots of Wubu were unaltered, but in leaves of Zhongshen1 the starch metabolism was largely activated. These findings revealed that intrinsic R/S and the spatial distribution of NSCs in roots and leaves concomitantly contributed to drought resistance in mulberry.

Stoichiometric homeostasis of N:P ratio drives species-specific symbiotic N fixation inhibition under N addition.

Symbiotic N fixation inhibition induced by N supply to legumes is potentially regulated by the relative N and P availability in soil. However, the specific responses of different legume species to changes in N:P availability remain unclear, and must be better understood to optimize symbiotic N fixation inputs under N enrichment. This study investigated mechanisms by which soil N and P supply influence the symbiotic N fixation of eight legume species, to quantify the inter-specific differences, and to demonstrate how these differences can be determined by the stoichiometric homeostasis in N:P ratios (HN:P). Eight herbaceous legume species were grown separately in outdoor pots and treated with either no fertilizer (control), N fertilizer (14g N m-2), P fertilizer (3.5g P m-2) or both N and P fertilizer. Plant nutrients, stoichiometric characteristics, root biomass, non-structural carbohydrates (NSC), rhizosphere chemistry, P mobilization, root nodulation and symbiotic N fixation were measured. N addition enhanced rhizosphere P mobilization but drove a loss of root biomass and root NSC via exudation of P mobilization compound (organic acid), especially so in treatments without P addition. N addition also induced a 2-14% or 14-36% decline in symbiotic N fixation per plant biomass by legumes in treatments with or without P addition, as a result of decreasing root biomass and root NSC. The changes in symbiotic N fixation were positively correlated with stoichiometric homeostasis of N:P ratios in intact plants without root nodules, regardless of P additions. This study indicates that N addition can induce relative P limitations for growth, which can stimulate rhizosphere P mobilization at the expense of root biomass and carbohydrate concentrations, reducing symbiotic N fixation in legumes. Legume species that had less changes in plant N:P ratio, such as Lespedeza daurica and Medicago varia maintained symbiotic N fixation to a greater extent under N addition.

Drought- and soil substrate-induced variations in root nonstructural carbohydrates result from fine root morphological and anatomical traits of Juglans mandshurica seedlings

BackgroundNonstructural carbohydrates (NSCs) reflect the carbon supply status and affect the construction and development of plants. Previous studies have focused on the dynamics of NSCs among plant organs, however, few studies have paid attention to the synergistic variations between fine root traits and NSCs under drought based on the perspective of branch order roots. This study aims to explore the responses of fine root traits and NSCs among root orders of Juglans mandshurica seedlings under different drought intensities and soil substrates. The 2-year-old J. mandshurica potted seedlings were planted in three different soil substrates (humus, loam and sandy-loam soil) and subjected to four drought intensities (CK, mild drought T1, moderate drought T2 and severe drought T3) for 60 days.ResultsThe root biomass of seedlings in sandy-loam soil under the same drought intensity was higher than that of seedlings in humus soil. With an increase in drought, the root biomass, average diameter, root tissue density and cortex thickness decreased significantly, and the specific root length, stele diameter and conduit density increased. The root NSC contents in humus soil were higher than those in sandy-loam soil. The fine root soluble sugar content in all soil substrates decreased with increasing drought intensity, while the root starch and total NSC contents varied among the different soil substrates. Compared with transportive roots, the morphological and anatomical traits jointly explained the higher variation in NSC contents of the absorptive roots. The anatomical traits explained the higher variation in the NSC content of first five order roots.ConclusionOur results suggest that coordinated adaptation of the root traits and NSCs of Manchurian walnut seedlings exposed to water gradients in different soil substrates.

Multi-year throughfall reduction enhanced the growth and non-structural carbohydrate storage of roots at the expenses of above-ground growth in a warm-temperate natural oak forest

The more frequent occurrence and severer drought events resulting from climate change are increasingly affecting the physiological performance of trees and ecosystem carbon sequestration in many regions of the world. However, our understanding of the mechanisms underlying the responses and adaption of forest trees to prolonged and multi-year drought is still limited. To address this problem, we conducted a long-term manipulative throughfall reduction (TFR, reduction of natural throughfall by 50%–70% during growing seasons) experiment in a natural oriental white oak (Quercus aliena var. acuteserrata Maxim.) forest under warm-temperate climate. After seven years of continuous TFR treatment, the aboveground growth in Q. aliena var. acuteserrata started to decline. Compared with the control plots, trees in the TFR treatment significantly reduced growth increments of stems (−14.2%) and leaf area index (−6.8%). The rate of net photosynthesis appeared to be more susceptible to changes in soil water in trees subjected to the TFR than in the control. The TFR-treated trees allocated significantly more photosynthates to belowground, leading to enhanced growth and nonstructural carbohydrates (NSC) storage in roots. The 7-year continuous TFR treatment increased the biomass, the production and the NSC concentration in the fine roots by 53.6%, 153.6% and 9.6%, respectively. There were clear trade-offs between the aboveground growth and the fine root biomass and NSC storage in Q. aliena var. acuteserrata trees in response to the multi-year TFR treatment. A negative correlation between the fine root NSC concentration and soil water suggested a strategy of preferential C storage over growth when soil water became deficient; the stored NSC during water limitation would then help promote root growth when drought stress is released. Our findings demonstrate the warm-temperate oak forest adopted a more conservative NSC use strategy in response to long-term drought stress, with enhanced root growth and NSC storage at the expenses of above-ground growth to mitigate climate change-induced drought.

Long-term water use efficiency and non-structural carbohydrates of dominant tree species in response to nitrogen and water additions in a warm temperate forest.

Nitrogen (N) deposition tends to accompany precipitation in temperate forests, and vegetation productivity is mostly controlled by water and N availability. Many studies showed that tree species response to precipitation or N deposition alone influences, while the N deposition and precipitation interactive effects on the traits of tree physiology, especially in non-structural carbohydrates (NSCs) and long-term water use efficiency (WUE), are still unclear. In this study, we measured carbon stable isotope (δ13C), total soluble sugar and starch content, total phenols, and other physiological traits (e.g., leaf C:N:P stoichiometry, lignin, and cellulose content) of two dominant tree species (Quercus variabilis Blume and Liquidambar formosana Hance) under canopy-simulated N deposition and precipitation addition to analyze the changes of long-term WUE and NSC contents and to explain the response strategies of dominant trees to abiotic environmental changes. This study showed that N deposition decreased the root NSC concentrations of L. formosana and the leaf lignin content of Q. variabilis. The increased precipitation showed a negative effect on specific leaf area (SLA) and a positive effect on leaf WUE of Q. variabilis, while it increased the leaf C and N content and decreased the leaf cellulose content of L. formosana. The nitrogen-water interaction reduced the leaf lignin and total phenol content of Q. variabilis and decreased the leaf total phenol content of L. formosana, but it increased the leaf C and N content of L. formosana. Moreover, the response of L. formosana to the nitrogen-water interaction was greater than that of Q. variabilis, highlighting the differences between the two dominant tree species. The results showed that N deposition and precipitation obviously affected the tree growth strategies by affecting the NSC contents and long-term WUE. Canopy-simulated N deposition and precipitation provide a new insight into the effect of the nitrogen-water interaction on tree growth traits in a temperate forest ecosystem, enabling a better prediction of the response of dominant tree species to global change.

Interactive effect between tree ageing and trunk-boring pest reduces hydraulics and carbon metabolism in Hippophae rhamnoides.

Sea-buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides) is widely distributed across the Eurasian continent. Recently sea-buckthorn has shown premature ageing and decline when confronted with water deficiency and Holcocerus hippophaecolus damage in northwest China and the Loess Plateau region. However, the physiological process of sea-buckthorn senescence in response to drought and pest damage is still unknown. In this study, 4-year-old (4y), 15-year-old normal growth (15yN) and 15-year-old seriously moth-damaged sea-buckthorn plants (15yH) were used as the research objects. The growth of branches and roots, branch water potential and percentage loss of conductivity (PLC), branch vulnerability to embolism (quantified by P50, xylem water potential at 50 % of PLC), branch xylem parenchyma cell viability, photosynthesis and the non-structural carbohydrate (NSC) content in branches and roots in dry and wet seasons were measured. The results showed that the length, basal diameter of 1-year-old branches and the leaf area of 4y trees were significantly larger than that of 15yN and 15yH trees, and the fine root density of 15yH trees was significantly lower than that of 15yN trees in all measured areas. The branch-specific hydraulic conductivity of 15yN and 15yH trees was only 50.2 % and 12.3 % of that of 4y trees, and the P50 of 4y, 15yH and 15yN trees was -3.69 MPa, -2.71 MPa and -1.15 MPa, respectively. The midday water potential and photosynthetic rate were highest in 4y trees, followed by 15yN and then 15yH trees in both the dry season and wet seasons, while branch PLC declined in the opposite direction (15yH trees highest, 4y trees lowest). The degree of PLC repair within a day was highest in 4y trees, followed by 15yN and then 15yH trees, and the viability of xylem cells was consistent with this pattern. The branch xylem starch and NSC content of 4y and 15yN trees were significantly higher than that of 15yH trees in the dry season, and the root starch and NSC content of 4y trees were significantly higher than that of 15yH trees in the two seasons. The above results suggest that the hydraulic properties of the normal elderly and seriously pest-damaged sea-buckthorn were significantly worse than in juvenile plants. Narrower early wood width and vessel density, high embolism vulnerability and weak embolism repair capacity led to the decline in water-conducting ability, and similarly further affected photosynthesis and the root NSC content. The decline in xylem parenchyma cell viability was the main reason for the limited embolism repair in the branches.

Soil warming alters fine root lifespan, phenology, and architecture in a Cunninghamia lanceolata plantation

The mechanisms by which warming affects fine root lifespan remain unclear. In a large-scale soil warming experiment in a Chinese fir plantation, fine root dynamics were monitored for four years using minirhizotrons, and the effects of increasing temperature and co-varying factors on fine root lifespan, such as soil moisture, fine root phenology and architecture, were analysed. Fine root non-structural carbohydrate concentrations and respiration rates were measured to test if fine root lifespan is affected by carbon (C) supply. Warming shortened the overall fine root lifespan by 27.6% (warming vs. control: 197.0 ± 3.5 d vs. 272.0 ± 4.5 d). Cox regression models suggest that increased soil temperature directly and negatively affects root lifespan, whereas decreased soil moisture prolongs root lifespan. Fine roots grew thinner and deeper in warm soil and showed higher emergence in winter but lower emergence in summer; all factors affected the fine root lifespan in an integrated manner. Glucose addition stimulated fine root respiration only in warm soil, indicating a depletion of readily available carbohydrates under warming. Overall, our findings suggest that warming could accelerate the input of C by roots into soil due to shortened fine root lifespans, highlighting the important consideration of simultaneously increasing temperature and its co-varying factors to predict root lifespan under climate change.

Spatial variations and pools of non-structural carbohydrates in young Catalpa bungei undergoing different fertilization regimes.

Despite the importance of non-structural carbohydrates (NSC) for growth and survival in woody plants, we know little about whole-tree NSC storage. Here, Catalpa bungei trees fertilized using different schedules, including water and fertilizer integration, hole application, and no fertilization, were used to measure the spatial variations of sugar, starch, and NSC concentrations in the leaf, branch, stem, bark, and root. By calculating the volume of whole-tree NSC pools and the contribution of distinct organs, we were also able to compare the storage under various fertilization regimes. We found that the spatial distribution patterns of each organ undergoing different fertilization regimes were remarkably similar. Height-related increases in the sugar and NSC concentrations of the leaf and bark were observed. The concentrations of sugar and NSC in the branch did not appear to vary longitudinally or horizontally. The sugar and NSC concentrations in the stem fluctuated with height, first falling and then rising. The coarse root contained larger amounts of NSC components in comparison to fine root. Contrary to no fertilization, fertilization enhanced the distribution ratio of the leaf, branch, and stem NSC pools while decreasing the distribution ratio of the root NSC pool. Particularly, the addition of fertilizer and water significantly increased the biomass of the organs, enhancing the carbon sink of each organ and whole-tree in comparison to other fertilization regimes. Our main goal was to strengthen the empirical groundwork for comprehending the functional significance of NSC allocation and stock variations at the organ-level of C. bungei trees.

N addition alters growth, non-structural carbohydrates, and C:N:P stoichiometry of Reaumuriasoongorica seedlings in Northwest China

Reaumuria soongorica is an important biological barrier for ecological protection in the Gobi Desert in northwestern China, where soil nitrogen availability is low. N deposition has recently increased significantly in Gobi Desert, and the responses of R. soongorica to N enrichment may become a problem for ecological restoration and protection. However, little is known about the effects of N addition on the biomass, non-structural carbohydrates (NSC), and carbon:nitrogen:phosphorus (C:N:P) stoichiometry of R. soongorica in this region. Here, we examined changes in biomass, NSC and C:N:P ratios of different organs of R. soongorica seedlings in four N addition treatments: 0 (N0), 4.6 (N1), 9.2 (N2), and 13.8 (N3) g m−2 year−1. N addition up to 9.2 g m−2 year−1 significantly increased the biomass of different organs, simultaneously increasing the belowground: aboveground ratio of R. soongorica seedlings. Root NSC concentrations significantly increased under all N addition treatments, but leaf and stem NSC concentrations only increased under the N1 and N2 addition treatments. Nitrogen addition enhanced the soluble sugar concentrations (SSC) of leaves and roots, and reduced starch concentrations (SC) of all organs. Stem and root N concentrations significantly increased under the N2 and N3 treatments, and leaf N concentrations only increased under the N3 treatment, but N addition had no significant effect on plant C and P concentrations. Leaf and stem C:N ratios decreased significantly under the N2 and N3 treatments, but root C:N decreased significantly in all N addition treatments. The N3 treatment significantly increased the N:P ratio of all organs. N addition significantly enhanced available N (AN), available P (AP) and total phosphorus (TP) in rhizosphere soil. Our results suggest that N addition alters the biomass, NSC, N concentrations, C:N and N:P ratios of all plant organs, but roots responded more strongly than stems or leaves to N addition, potentially allowing the plants to absorb more water from the arid soil in this region ensuring the survival of R. soongorica seedlings. Rhizosphere soil AP, AN and TP concentrations were important factors affecting the NSC concentrations and stoichiometric characteristics of R. soongorica.

Soil moisture controls on the dynamics of nonstructural carbohydrate storage in Picea meyeri during the growing season

Nonstructural carbohydrate (NSC) dynamics have been suggested to be an important trait reflecting carbon balance under environmental changes. However, our understanding of NSC storage dynamics, their controls, and their responses to environmental factors remain unclear. In this study, we selected the evergreen conifer Picea meyeri at five altitudes (2040 m, 2260 m, 2440 m, 2600 m, and 2740 m a.s.l.) on Luya Mountain, North-central China. NSC concentrations in the needles, shoots, stems, and roots were measured, and the environmental variables were monitored during the growing seasons in 2018 and 2019. The results showed that the NSCs first decreased slightly and then increased gradually as altitude increased in the needles, shoots, stems, and roots. The NSC concentrations with the highest levels occurring in the needles and the lowest in the stems, whereas the shoots and roots showed intermediate concentrations. Moreover, soil moisture was the major factor influencing the dynamics of NSC storage in P. meyeri. The concentrations of soluble sugars and starch in all four organs increased with decreasing soil moisture, except for needle starch. In particular, the soluble sugars in the needles were significantly negatively correlated with air temperature, and those in the stems had a different response to soil moisture and vapor pressure deficit (VPD). Furthermore, root NSCs reserves may be important for P. meyeri to respond to low soil moisture. These findings provide new insights for understanding tree NSC allocation and the mechanism of stress resistance.
