Roman Catholic Religious Education in the Internet Media Coverage in Poland

For many years, there has been a heated debate in the Polish media regarding the presence and concept of Roman Catholic religious education in schools. Therefore, questions arise: What image of Roman Catholic religious education emerges from the media discussion? Are the criteria used to evaluate Roman Catholic religious education fair, ensuring equal treatment of all subjects in Polish schools? This article attempts to answer these questions through a qualitative analysis of 100 publications posted on popular websites between 2018 and 2022. The results of the research confirm that the media debate on Roman Catholic religious education in Polish schools is not always objective and tolerant.

Sexuality beyond Chastity: Negotiating Gender Intimacy and Sexuality within Roman Catholic Religious Communities in Poland

In late modernity both religion and sexuality are being elaborated in terms of reflexivity. In this article, we present findings from our research on the topic of constructions of gender, intimacy and sexuality by sisters and brothers in Catholic monasteries in Poland. The findings are based on the mixed-method transformative connection between qualitative (n = 92) and representative sample quantitative research (n = 1543) conducted in 2020. We studied reflexivity on gender, intimacy and sexuality within Catholic religious communities in Poland in order to understand how gender, intimacy and sexuality are presented in the institutionalized framework of religious life. Our study demonstrates that reflexivity on gender, intimacy and sexuality is highly institutionalised and deeply privatized within Catholic religious communities. The article shows that reflexivity of consecrated persons in Poland on gender, intimacy and sexuality is strongly shaped by religious norms (chastity) and subordinated to their religious roles.

Attachment to God: Narratives of Roman Catholic Priests

This narrative analysis was aimed at exploring the attachment to God narratives of 28 middle-aged Roman Catholic Religious priests rendering their service in various settings in South India. The study found that majority of the Roman Catholic priests had developed representations of a secure attachment to God. Twenty-six priests had developed representations of a secure attachment to God, and two priests of an insecure attachment to God. The Majority of the Roman Catholic priests had developed representations of a secure attachment to more than one spiritual attachment figures. Along with God, most priests had also developed representations of a secure attachment to the Virgin Mary. All the major themes related to attachment to God were found in the narratives of the Roman Catholic Priests.

Een religieuze vrije val in Venray

In Venray, a country town in the south of the Netherlands, several hundreds of Roman Catholic religious lived and worked around the middle of the twentieth century. Eight different orders and congregations had their monasteries and convents for priests, brothers and sisters. Their main tasks concerned education (especially in boarding schools), nursing and psychiatric care. Between 1965 and 2005 more than 400 of them left, mainly because their tasks were taken over by lay people, which was a consequence of the development of the welfare state. In the seventies and eighties many other cultural changes led to big tensions within the monasteries and convents. Although the religious made various attempts to renew their rules and life, they were not able to stop the ongoing decrease of their numbers. The short history of those eight religious communities in Venray and their social practices is a good example of the recent history of active Roman Catholic religious in the Netherlands. Probably, in Venray their decline even went a bit faster than in most other Dutch places. Most of the ‘superfluous’ priests, brothers and nuns went to larger cities in order to develop alternative social activities, for which was no opportunity in a country town like Venray.

Generativity in Elderly Oblate Sisters of Providence.

We explored how generativity and well-being merged in a group of childless older women: African and Hispanic Roman Catholic Religious Sisters, linking two minority identity characteristics. We qualitatively interviewed 8 Oblate Sisters of Providence (OSP), by providing a framework for examining the range of the women's generativity-cultural spheres in which generativity is rooted and outlets for generativity. Early negative experiences, such as fleeing despotism in Haiti and Cuba and racism within the Catholic Church, occurred alongside positive experiences-families who stressed education, and Caucasian Religious who taught children of color. This became a foundation for the Sister's generative commitment. Findings highlight that research gains from a phenomenological understanding of how religious faith promotes generative cognitions and emotions. Findings also reveal that the experiences of a subculture in society-African-American elderly women religious-add to theories and definitions of generativity.

The Virgin, The Princess, and The Goddess: A Field Report and Analysis of Pagan and Christian Symbolism in a Roman Catholic Religious Celebration of Northern Chile

This article represents an early attempt to organize a communications study of a Roman Catholic religious celebration situated in the Andes Mountains of northern Chile. Although the rites and symbols of traditional religious festivals are more likely to draw the attention of anthropologists and ethnomusicologists than communication scholars, I believe such environments are fascinating and fertile sites for media ecologists to explore. The first part of this article integrates the work of several ethnographers who have studied the feast with my own observations made during a field visit there in July 2001. The second part of the article proceeds with a media ecological analysis by placing the feast within an historical context that highlights the symbolic differences between oral and literate forms of religious experience. The article concludes that the existing clash of pagan and Christian symbolism within the feast can at least partially be explained by the contrast between oral and literate forms of symbolism.

Roman Catholic Religious Discourse about Manhood in Quebec: From 1900 to the Quiet Revolution (1960–1980)

This article examines discourse about men in popular Roman Catholic literature between 1900 and 1960 in Quebec. From 1940 to 1960, particular attention was paid to the spiritual life of men, whose attitude toward piety was that it was women's—not men's—business. Catholic Action movements offered alternate models and masculine rituals for Christian life. Like the 19th and early 20th century Christian men's movements in the United States, these strategies attempted to counteract the “lack of manhood” in the churches. French Canadian movements, however, tried to attract men to the church by extolling the virtues of humble obedience. Partly influenced by feminism in the ‘60s, different pastoral issues surfaced in relation to men, and the older movements declined. While men's movements previously had recourse to symbol and ritual, symbolic activity declined in favor of productive activities. This raises the issue of the place of symbolism in the construction of contemporary masculinities.

Religious Communities and Their Mission

In the past thirty years, religious orders of men and women within the Roman Catholic Church have witnessed both the graying of its members and a decrease in the number of new vocations. Research has shown that only those communities with a clear focus in terms of charism and mission will survive. The present study reports the results of survey research conducted with 484 Roman Catholic religious which investigated three research questions: the uniqueness of the stated mission of seven religious communities, the awareness and experience of each community's unique charism, and an understanding of those lived experiences within community life which contribute to and predict a community's charism. The findings indicate that, while each of the religious communities surveyed can both identify and experience their community's stated charism, their mission statements poorly reflect the charism which is unique to each community. The data also indicates that time spent in prayer, both personal and communal, as well as the level of one's formal education, contribute to and predict and community's charism.

Residence Stability and Decline in Roman Catholic Religious Orders of Women: A Preliminary Investigation

Previous research on lifestyle changes within U.S. Catholic religious orders has neglected to examine the extent to which their members still live communally. In this study, the archives of eight religious congregations of women were examined for 1964 and 1990 to determine changes in living patterns. When compared with 1964, sisters in 1990 lived in much smaller groups and in apartments rather than convents. The composition of the 1990 groups was also much more stable over time. Possible reasons for these changes are explored

Changing Images of Roman Catholic Religious Orders in the Nineteenth Century

‘“Camelot-Camelot:” said I to myself “I don’t seem to remember hearing of it before. Name of the asylum, likely.”’ so said Mark Twain’s Connecticut Yankee at King Arthur’s Court. But the irony is that the joke is now on Twain. In examining The Discovery of the Asylum, David J. Rothman has persuasively argued that the American asylum which developed in the 1820s and 1830s served a dual purpose. It would create the correct desirable attitudes within its inmates and by virtue of its success, set an example of right action to the larger society. The well-ordered asylum would exemplify the proper principles of social organisation and thus insure the safety of the republic and promote its glory. My purpose is to suggest that the monastery in Europe served a similar purpose. Europeans faced similar social and political problems to Americans and the rediscovery of monasticism paralleled the growth of American institutions and served a similar purpose in the public arena. In the process a more tolerant and sympathetic attitude towards religious orders emerged.

Perseverance of Roman Catholic Religious Brothers as a Function of Perceived Level of Interpersonal Communication

This exploratory study investigated the extent to which the perceived level of interpersonal communication within a given Roman Catholic religious institute influences a religious brother's decision to remain in his religious institute. A six-variable path model explained 16% of the variance in the decisions of a sample of 147 religious brothers. Interpersonal communication affects perseverance positively in an indirect way, i. e., it strengthens friendship and lessens the desire to marry. Interpersonal communication reduces also loneliness. Friendship exercises the strongest positive effect upon perseverance. Desire to marry and problems coping with celibacy have the strongest negative effects upon perseverance. The relationship between friendship and desire to marry needs further investigation.

The spiritual development of successful students

Standards of success are one means of identifying the influence of a denomination upon an individual. A Roman Catholic religious may es teem contemplation and withdrawal from the world. A Lutheran or Episcopal clergyman may count the mediation of the Word and sacra ments as his essential ministry. To a Methodist or Southern Baptist preacher, service is the sign of success. Successful service is presented in Southern Baptist periodicals as the erection of buildings, increase in church membership, enlargement of financial contributions.1 Although there are warnings against these stand ards in the same literature, the young men who enter the ministry still expect to participate in the financial and numerical gains that the denomi nation has experienced in the past twenty years. It is especially easy to an ticipate more of these gains in the Southwest, where religion continues to flourish with the growing population. The secular aspects of this success are mixed with a frontier empha sis upon action and a revivalistic focus upon immediate religious ex perience. With this combination, Southern Baptists are accustomed to seeing results. Theological emphases upon individual responsibility are interpreted in terms of private enterprise and corporation competitive ness.
