Teacher leadership in developing religious character in Muhammadiyah elementary school

The religious character dimension plays an important role in developing the character of elementary school age children as a whole. Teacher leadership is one variable that can be used to develop the religious character of elementary school age children. This research aims to explore teacher leadership in Muhammadiyah elementary schools in developing students' religious character. Researchers use qualitative research with a case study approach with observation, interviews and documentation as data collection techniques. The research subjects consisted of school principals, teachers and students at SD Muhammadiyah Macanan Sleman. The collected data was analyzed using the Miles & Huberman model of interactive inductive data analysis techniques which includes data collection, data reduction, data presentation and conclusions. To ensure the validity of the data, researchers used triangulation of sources and techniques. The research results show that teacher leadership in developing religious character at SD Muhammadiyah Macanan consists of three aspects, namely personal, team and organizational aspects. The personal aspect of teacher leadership is demonstrated by the ability to guide, mobilize, influence and communicate. The team aspect of teacher leadership is carried out by discussing and providing feedback, improving the quality of learning, training religious character, mentoring activities, and observing students' religious character. The organizational aspect of teacher leadership consists of the role of teachers in supporting school policies and programs, supporting the administrative leadership of the school principal, and efforts to maintain school sustainability. The findings of this research highlight the importance of the role of teacher leadership in developing students' religious character in Muhammadiyah elementary schools.

Mentor, Observe, Support, Take Action (MOST): a model for continuing professional development of teacher leaders

This study aims to identify literacy competencies, self-efficacy, and Technological Pedagogical Knowledge (TPK) among teacher leaders (TL) as the foundation for developing a model of sustained professional development. The survey involved 153 respondents, TL at the junior high school level in Riau and Riau Islands. Instruments were used to measure literacy skills (environmental, numerical, digital) and TPK employed multiple-choice tests. The questions underwent item analysis, piloted with 30 respondents. A questionnaire measured self-efficacy, the role of TL, and the implementation of the Emancipated Curriculum. Descriptive data analysis determined demographic characteristics and the average competence of TL. Inferential analysis to identify relationships between variables used Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) with Lisrel 8.80 software. Research results reveal that the competence level of TL (literacy, TPK, and self-efficacy) ranges from moderate (60.60) to high (91.20). Based on SEM analysis, the developed model meets the criteria as a well-fitting model. Validation results show that all loading factors are > 0.5, t statistics > 1.96. This study recommends the development of a TL Professional Development model with the acronym MOST (mentor, observe, support, take action) as stages for their professional development to fulfill the mission of moving, acting, and driving the implementation of the Emancipated Curriculum in Indonesia.

The Role of Teacher Leadership in the Independent Curriculum Learning Process

As a leader in education, a teacher must be a leader who is liked, trusted, and able to guide students to grow and develop into humans who are ready to adapt and face challenges. The independent curriculum comes with a student-centered learning system, the teacher is not the only source of knowledge. So what is the role of teachers in independent curriculum learning? This research aims to describe a literature review regarding the role of teacher leadership in independent curriculum learning. The method used in this research is a qualitative method with a type of literature review which will conduct research by summarizing several materials sourced from journals, books and other sources related to the role of teachers and the independent curriculum in learning in Indonesia. In the learning process, although it is not teacher-centered, the teacher still has control over the course of the learning process. Teachers are responsible for planning instruction including setting goals and objectives, selecting materials and activities and assessing student learning. So it can be concluded that teachers have an important role in the independent curriculum learning process.

Students’ Perceptions on Head Teacher Leadership Roles for Student Engagement at Secondary Schools in Bangladesh

The active involvement of students in the educational process is of utmost importance in guaranteeing the provision of high-quality education. Headteachers have the capacity to assume a substantial role in fostering student engagement in various school activities. The primary objective of this study was to investigate the perspectives of students regarding the role of the head teacher in promoting student engagement within secondary schools in Bangladesh. The research was conducted utilizing a qualitative approach. In order to accommodate the convenience of eight schools representing eight divisions in Bangladesh, a total of eight Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) were conducted. The findings of this study indicate that the leadership exhibited by head teachers has a discernible influence on the level of student engagement. The head teachers’ leadership positions encompassed several important responsibilities, such as overseeing and assessing the academic activities and progress of students, offering guidance and motivation, fostering active participation in teaching and learning, as well as involving students in extracurricular pursuits and decision-making processes within the school context. This study also unveiled specific detrimental characteristics exhibited by head teachers that served as demotivating factors for student engagement in school activities. In order to enhance the quality of education, it has been recommended that secondary level head teachers in Bangladesh should augment the range of activities aimed at fostering student engagement within the school setting. Investigating links between teacher leadership, collective efficacy and teacher commitment in Egyptian schools: a mediated-effects analysis

PurposeResearch investigating the impact of school leadership on teachers’ emotions and practices has mostly focused on the leadership behaviors of school principals, thus ignoring the potential leadership qualities of other school members, especially teachers. The current study aimed to bridge this gap by providing further insight into the link between teacher leadership and teacher outcomes in Egyptian schools. Specifically, the study examined the mediating role of collective teacher efficacy in the relationship between teacher leadership and teacher commitment.Design/methodology/approachThe study employed structural equation modeling and bootstrapping to analyze survey data collected from 497 teachers in primary and middle schools in Damietta city, Egypt.FindingsThe results supported our proposition that teachers’ leadership practices have more indirect than direct effects on teacher commitment through collective teacher efficacy. That is, teacher leadership practices positively affect teachers’ efficacy beliefs, which, in turn, increase their sense of commitment to school.Originality/valueThe study adds a new aspect to the literature by investigating the potential role of teacher leadership in promoting positive teacher attitudes that can have a positive impact on student learning. This is significant given the growing emphasis that educational systems place on enhancing school effectiveness. Specifically, understanding the factors that contribute to teacher commitment can inform strategies for retaining effective teachers and improving the overall quality of the teaching workforce. Additionally, since most of the empirical research on teacher leadership has been produced in Western contexts, it is important to enrich the field with studies conducted in other societies, especially in the Arab region.

Investigating the Impact of Transformational Leadership by Teachers on Student Creativity in Chinese Higher Vocational Colleges: A Theoretical Framework

This study investigates the integration of transformational leadership and teacher leadership and creativity in Chinese higher vocational education against the backdrop of the nation's ambitious industrial modernisation. Acknowledging the pivotal role of teacher leadership in educational quality, this study examines the potential of transformational leadership practices to enhance creative competencies among students identified by the World Economic Forum as a critical skill for 2025. Through a quantitative methodology, data were collected data from 1034 students across public and private vocational colleges in Jiangsu Province, employing the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ 5X) and the Personal-Environment Fit Creativity Scale (PEFSC) to gauge perceptions of teacher leadership behaviours and student creativity. Anchored by Bass and Riggio's Transformational Leadership Theory and Csikszentmihalyi's Systematic Theory of Creativity, this study constructs a dual theoretical lens to explore this dynamic. Anticipated outcomes include the formulation of a robust framework for teacher professional development aimed at refining teaching strategies and fostering an environment conducive to creative thinking. The implications of this study extend its utility beyond the Chinese context, offering a blueprint for integrating transformational leadership into educational practices globally, thereby enriching the discourse on the impact of leadership on student creativity.

Teacher-leaders’ personality traits of extraversion, conscientiousness, and openness to experience and transformational leadership: The implications for collective teachers efficacy

The significant role of teacher-leaders has been acknowledged in educational studies throughout the globe. However, few studies have focused on the effect of teacher-leaders’ leadership on their teachers' job attitudes. This study, grounded in social cognitive theory, explores the mediating role of teacher-leaders' transformational leadership on the link between teacher-leaders’ personality traits of extraversion, conscientiousness, and openness to experience, and collective teacher efficacy. The results of Structural Equation Modeling from a sample of 103 teacher-leaders and 506 teachers, indicated that transformational leadership fully mediated the relationship between teacher-leaders’ personality traits and collective teacher efficacy. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed.

Adaptive teacher leadership in a pandemic context: The case of Roma education in Bulgaria

This study describes how, during the COVID-19 pandemic, teachers working with Roma children in Bulgaria enacted leadership to support their most vulnerable students. The case of Roma education reveals the disruptive conditions of the health crisis and how they may have served as an adaptive challenge that prompted the emergence of leadership. Twelve elementary school teachers participated in the study. Conclusions assert the importance of trust, relationships, collaboration, and nontraditional educator roles as culturally responsive strategies to support the education of disadvantaged students. The study provides insights into the role of teacher leadership in addressing educational disparities, particularly during crises.

The Life Stories of Teacher Leaders: A Qualitative Content Analysis

The teacher leader creates a path through which the students achieve their valued outcomes (high education performance). The qualitative content analysis was used in the investigation. The application of correct inference and interpretation in qualitative content analysis allows for the raw data into manageable themes. 10 participants were recruited in the study. Each interview conducted in their own office in the school. Semi-structured interviews were done based on the general questions asked with the key informants. This set of interview guides were evaluated twice by two experts in qualitative research. All interviews were recorded and then transcribed by the researcher. Seven themes emerged in this study: questing for quality education through continuous involvement in curriculum development, nurturing an empowering and inspiring school climate, leveraging partnerships, networks and linkages with the various stakeholders, exemplifying good leadership skills, amplifying open and clear communication, developing systematic process of classroom observation and setting attainable standards outcomes and expectations for students and teachers. This study revealed the actions of teacher leaders working at Quirino National High School about teacher leadership skills and their best practices. The seven themes show that teacher leaders are highly motivated to enhance student achievement. Stakeholders in education should place significant emphasis on promoting classroom teacher leadership. Thus, education administrators should design effective strategies to ensure that the current crop of teachers understands the importance and role of teacher leaders. By reflecting on these practices, teachers will be inspired to become teacher leaders in their own field.

Linking Distributed Leadership with Differentiated Instruction in Inclusive Schools: The Mediating Roles of Teacher Leadership and Professional Competence.

Despite the clear worldwide school inclusion initiative, translating the widely embraced notions of inclusive education into differentiated teaching practice has been recognized as a common difficulty. Based on replies from 780 educators in inclusive schools in Beijing, China, this study explored how distributed leadership contributes to teachers' use of differentiated teaching, the mediation role of teacher leadership for inclusion, and teachers' professional competencies of inclusive education. The results suggest that principals' distributed leadership directly influences teachers' employment of differentiated instruction. Teacher leadership for inclusion and professional competencies of inclusive education play a serial mediating role in the relationship between distributed principalship and teachers' use of differentiated instruction. Implications for implementing inclusive practices were further discussed.

The study encompasses an in-depth analysis of various dimensions, including teacher profiles based on age, gender, and years of teaching experience. Moreover, the research meticulously evaluates the teacher leadership attributes, intricately aligned with professional practice standards encompassing learner development, handling learning differences, cultivating an enriching learning environment, mastering content knowledge, adeptly applying content, skillful assessment techniques, meticulous instructional planning, effective employment of instructional strategies, dedication to continuous professional learning and ethical practice, as well as adept leadership and collaboration skills. This study further explores potential variations in teacher leadership attributes among different profile groupings. It also examines the extent of participation in school development, considering the active engagement in knowledge dissemination, curriculum enhancement initiatives, fostering teacher growth, and effective school leadership and management practices.

Stepping up and Supporting Colleagues: Teacher Leadership during the COVID-19 Pandemic in US National Blue Ribbon Schools

ABSTRACT Literature has examined teacher leadership (TL) roles, definitions, applications in schools, and, most recently, its presence in high-performing public schools, like the US National Blue Ribbon Schools (NBRS). This study featured principal and teacher leader interviews (n = 20) from NBRS recognized during the pandemic (2020 and 2021), alongside their schools’ program applications. This study concerned how TL contributed to these schools’ continued success during the pandemic. Results included themes of a wide breadth of TL work, cultural and strategic school supports for teacher leaders, and humility and commitment of teacher leaders.

Teacher Leadership Roles and Leadership Capacity Development in Bayelsa State Nigeria

The study investigated the influence of teachers’ leadership roles on leadership capacity development in Bayelsa State, Nigeria. To guide the study, five objectives were stated, five research questions were posed, and five hypotheses were developed. The study was anchored on traits theory of leadership. A descriptive design was used to carry out the study. The population of the study consisted of 2,893 teachers in 147 public secondary schools from the 12 educational zones in the 8 local government areas in the state, with a sample size of 338 teachers. A simple random sampling technique was used to select the respondents. Teachers’ Leadership Roles and Leadership Capacity Development Questionnaire was used for data collection. The instrument was validated and tested for reliability, with a reliability index of 0.816 derived through Pearson’s Product Moment Correlation. Out of the total copies of 338 questionnaires distributed, 326 copies of the questionnaire retrieved were used for further analysis to achieve the specific objectives of the study. Mean and standard deviation was used to answer the research questions, while the null hypotheses were tested using independent t-test at the 0.05 significance level. The findings of the study revealed, among other things, that there is no significant gender difference in the perception teachers have about their leadership role in secondary schools in Bayelsa State, and there is no significant gender difference in the extent to which teachers' instructional leadership roles influence their leadership capacity development in Bayelsa State. The study concluded that teachers' leadership roles are crucial in promoting school effectiveness and student achievement, and that it is important for schools to provide opportunities for teachers to develop their instructional leadership capacity, mentorship capacity, and leadership capacity building through professional development programmes and other supportive measures. The study, therefore, recommended, among others, that administrators of secondary schools in Bayelsa State should provide adequate training and support for teachers to enhance their leadership skills and effectively carry out their roles and responsibilities in the classroom and school community

School counselor leadership: A theoretical and empirical review

Entering the 21st century, the leadership role of teachers is in the spotlight in primary to secondary education. Similarly, the leadership of school counselors began to be voiced. Changes in the orientation of guidance and counseling resulted in a shift in the role of the school counselor as one of the implementers in guidance and counseling management. School counselors exercise a leadership role in developing and organizing guidance and counseling programs. This study aims to describe and how the leadership of school counselors theoretically and empirically. The analysis method uses a literature review with four stages: identification, screening, suitability, and inclusion. The primary data sources are obtained from academic reference books and previous research on teacher leadership, guidance and counseling over the past five years that have been published in reputable journals in the Scopus database. The results showed that school counselor leadership in the last five years carried several themes, such as testing the effectiveness of leadership training interventions, the relationship of leadership with personality attributes, the design of leadership training frameworks, the relationship of counseling leadership with professional counselor identity, and school counselor leadership in the context of ethnicity. The results of this study are expected to provide a broader picture of future research opportunities on the topic of school counselor leadership.

Qualitative Analysis of Teachers Perception on Head Teacher Leadership and Administrative Roles in Schools

Leadership is a process where an individual such as head teacher influence teachers and students to achieve common objectives. The increasing challenges of mismanagement which is culminating to poor academic performance and inadequate resources in spite of huge budget on education yearly has made the imperative to examine the head teacher leadership and administrative role in schools. In view of this, the study implemented qualitative research design approach and interpretative perspective to adequately investigate perceptions of teachers regarding roles of head teachers for improvement of schools in Nigeria. Purposive sampling technique was used to conduct series of in-depth interviews, with 16 teachers selected from four schools in north central region of Nigeria. Interview data were analyzed thematically using Nvivo 12 qualitative software. Therefore, based on findings of this study, it was discovered that mentoring and interactive roles play a great part. Also, general theme which indicated the need for head teacher to be conscious of his role in creating enabling environment for both staff and students emerged. Within the themes, it was discovered that school positive culture, reward and praise are sources of motivation for teachers. Consequently, it is recommended that head teacher should maintain open and continuous communication link with teachers and students. In addition to these findings, there is urgent need for head teacher to always ensure reward and recognition which have been identified to be vital to maximum performance of teachers’ and students. Finally, it is concluded that head teacher leadership and administrative roles remains fundamental importance for continuous improvement of schools in north central region of Nigeria.

Teacher’s Leadership n Developing Character of Early Childhood: Case Study at Harapan Bunda Kindergarten, Jambi City

The purpose of this article is to describe the role of teacher leadership as a model for early childhood character development, as well as the difficulties in developing children's character. The study uses a qualitative approach in describing situations from social reality. Data was obtained through observation, interviews, and documentation, and analyzed using data reduction, data display, verification, and conclusion. This study concludes that the teacher's leadership role can shape the childhood independent character. Firstly, the role of teacher leadership in learning as a model of childhood independence for habituation. Secondly, there are childhood independent characters in daily activities. Thirdly, there are difficulties faced by teachers in realizing independent characters for children. This study recommends that teachers need to be given leadership reinforcement in early childhood character development so that they can develop optimally.

E-Learning quality: The role of learning technology utilization effectiveness teacher leadership and curriculum during the pandemic season in Indonesia

The impact of teacher leadership and curriculum on the effectiveness of learning technology utilization and the quality of e-learning has been proven by research. The study included 165 samples of teachers from Halang Island, Riau, Indonesia. Respondents are certified teachers with a minimum of ten years of experience, as determined by the purposive sampling method. Respondents completed a research questionnaire, which was used to collect data. Data ws proceeded with Smart PLS software, including validity, reliability, and hypothesis testing. The study's findings demonstrated that teacher leadership and curriculum directly impacted the effectiveness of learning technology utilization. The quality of e-learning was directly influenced by teacher leadership, curriculum, and the effectiveness of learning technology utilization. Finally, teacher leadership and curriculum impacted e-learning quality through the effectiveness of learning technology utilization. This study suggests two points. First, if you want to improve the effectiveness of learning technology utilization, the policy priority should be to update and then improve teacher leadership. Second, increasing the effectiveness of learning technology utilization is a policy priority if you want to improve the quality of e-learning. It was followed by curriculum updates and increased teacher leadership.
