Markers of predicting discharge from forensic psychiatric hospitals in Czechia.

Secure forensic hospital treatments are resource-intensive, aiming to rehabilitate offenders and enhance public safety. While these treatments consume significant portions of mental health budgets and show efficacy in some countries, their effectiveness in Czechia remains underexplored. Previous research has highlighted various factors influencing the likelihood of discharge from these institutions. Notably, the role of sociodemographic variables and the length of stay (LoS) in the context of forensic treatments has presented inconsistent findings across studies. The study, part of the 'Deinstitutionalization project' in Czechia, collected data from all inpatient forensic care hospitals. A total of 793 patients (711 male, 79 female and 3 unknown) were included. Data collection spanned 6 months, with tools like HoNOS, HoNOS-Secure, MOAS, HCR-20V3 and AQoL-8D employed to assess various aspects of patient health, behaviour, risk and quality of life. The study revealed several determinants influencing patient discharge from forensic hospitals. Key assessment tools, such as HoNOS secure scores and the HCR-20 clinical subscale, showed that higher scores equated to lower chances of release. Furthermore, specific diagnoses like substance use disorder increased discharge odds, while a mental retardation diagnosis significantly reduced it. The type of index offense showed no influence on discharge decisions. Factors like reduced risk behaviours, absence of mental retardation diagnosis, social support and secure post-release housing plans played significant roles. The results underscored the importance of using standardized assessment tools over clinical judgement. A standout insight was the unique challenges faced by patients diagnosed with mental retardation, emphasizing a need for specialized care units or tailored programmes.

Quality of life and mental health outcomes: the role of sociodemographic factors in the Palestinian context

The Mental health of Palestinians has been described as among the lowest in the world, with over half of Palestinian adults meeting the diagnostic threshold for depressive symptoms and a significant portion of Palestinians experiencing mental distress and anxiety. The aim of the current study was to test the correlation between quality of life (QoL) and mental health outcomes, and the role of sociodemographic variables in predicting mental health outcomes (depression, anxiety, and stress) among Palestinian adults during a challenging period of political conflict. The sample of our study consisted of 957 participants, 283 males and 674 females they were recruited using online methods; online advertisements, e-mail campaigns and social media. Our findings showed that QoL negatively correlated with stress (r = − 0.43, p < 0.01), anxiety (r = − 0.46, p < 0.01), and depression (r = − 0.47, p < 0.05). Moreover, stress positively correlated with anxiety (r = 0.81, p < 0.01), and depression (r = 0.89, p < 0.01). Finally, anxiety positively correlated with depression (r = 0.82, p < 0.01). Results of hierarchical regression analysis to predict stress, anxiety and depression, indicated that QoL, educational level, gender, region of residence, and age explained in a significant way variance in depression, anxiety and stress. Our findings are promising to conduct other studies in order to understand better how current study variables correlate to each other, so appropriate clinical interventions to mitigate the negative effects of depression, anxiety, and stress through enhancing quality of life and positive coping strategies can be developed and implemented by mental health providers.

Impulsiveness among Undergraduates from the United Arab Emirates and Jordan: Role of Socio-demographic Variables.

Some undergraduate students may appear impulsive in their behavior without taking enough time to think, and impulsiveness may vary according to gender, academic specialization, and academic level. This study investigated the differences in impulsiveness between undergraduates of different gender, academic specializations, and academic years at three private universities in the United Arab Emirates and Jordan. The research design of the study was a survey in nature. The researchers collected data online using a translated Arabic version of the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale (BIS-11) as described in Patton et al..1 A sample of 334 undergraduates was selected using the convenient non-probability sample technique. To analyze data, the researchers deployed descriptive and inferential statistics and found no significant differences between the students in the subscales of motor impulsiveness, non-planning, attentional impulsiveness, and the total scale score according to gender, academic specializations, and academic years variables. The researchers concluded that undergraduates have a moderate level of impulsiveness; except for attentional impulsiveness, the results indicated that the average student's score on the subscale was low. Motor impulsiveness, non-planning impulsiveness, and attentional impulsiveness were not significantly different between males and females, academic specialization, academic year variables, and their interaction. The limitations and implications of these findings are discussed.

The role of socio-demographic variables and buying habits in determining milk purchasers' preferences and choices.

Emerging new purchasing behaviors have been reflected in the sales trends of dairy products, mainly in cow milk consumption. This study aimed to investigate the preferences of milk purchasers toward different product attributes, by considering both individuals' socio-demographic characteristics (SD) and milk purchasing habits (PH) as independent variables in the milk consumption model definition. To achieve this objective, a questionnaire was administered to a sample of 1,216 residents in Northwest Italy. The application of the Best-Worst scaling (BWS) methodology to define the purchasers' declared preferences toward a set of 12 milk attributes, showed that milk origin and expiry date are the most important attributes for milk choice in the decision-making process. The correlation analysis showed that the SD and milk purchasing habits variables affect the definition of stated preferences heterogeneously between the intrinsic, extrinsic, and credence attributes.

Clinical and Sociodemographic Variables as Risk Factors for Suicidal Behavior in Borderline Personality Disorder: A Restrospective Study

Introduction and objectiveSuicidal behavior (SB) is nuclear in Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). It is considered a symptom clinically relevant and with an important prognostic value. The literature describes different variables related to SB in BPD such as impulsivity, aggressiveness or hopelessness. There are not hardly any studies focused on the role of sociodemographic variables and their specific relationship with SB in BPD. The objective of this work is to identify which clinical and sociodemographic parameters could act as markers of suicide risk in BPD. MethodsA cross-sectional, observational, and retrospective study was conducted of a sample of 134 patients diagnosed with BPD. The analysis of the association between variables was carried out with a multivariate negative binomial logistic regression model. ResultsSB is related to the number of siblings with statistical significance. Likewise, a greater number of suicide attempts is significantly associated with female gender, parenthood, permanent work, sick leaves and the number of previous hospital admissions. Both the presence of SB and a greater number of suicide attempts are significantly related to history of trauma in childhood and to the score in Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale. ConclusionsThese parameters could act as risk factors for SB in BPD. The role of these variables could be the subject of further research projects in order to identify them in clinical practice.

Prevalence and Socio-demographic Correlates of Dental Phobia in Pakistani Adult Population

Background: Dental anxiety is a barrier to seeking dental treatment. Anxiety aggravates the pain and fear of the dental procedure. Dentists all over the world report dental anxiety and non-compliance toward dental procedures by their Patients. Objective: To find out the prevalence of dental anxiety in adults living in Lahore. Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out to find out the prevalence of dental anxiety in adults. 1000 participants (Females 919, Males 81) with the age range of 18 to 60 years (M 32.18 SD 11.16) were selected. A modified dental Anxiety Scale along with a demographic Performa was given to the Participants. The participants were assessed in an individual setting. Results: the results of the study revealed that 4% of the participants fall under the mild category of dental phobia. 11 % had a moderate dental phobia, whereas 19 % of the participants had a high level of dental phobia. However, the majority of the participants suffer from severe levels of dental phobia i.e., 67%. The results of the Mann Whitney U analysis carried out showed that dental phobia was higher in females as compared to males (***p&lt;.001). The results of one-way ANOVA showed that dental phobia was higher in uneducated adults as compared to educated adults (***p&lt;.001). Conclusion: This study highlights the alarming prevalence rates of dental phobia that needs the attention of dental care providers to take preventative measures. The role of socio-demographic variables has implications for the timely assessment and management of dental phobia. Gender as a Predictor in the Perception of Sexual Harassment Definition

Sexual harassment is a pervasive problem across the globe and it is generally viewed subjectively. The review of the literature suggests that individual perception, history of past sexual harassment, and other personal factors influence beliefs concerning the seriousness of the problem. The present study aims to explore the role of socio demographic variables in the definition of sexual harassment. One hundred and sixty-one college students volunteered for this study. Personal profile sheet and Sexual Harassment Definition Questionnaire were used to collect the data. The results of the chi-square test suggested that girls and students who already experienced sexual harassment found larger social incidents as harassment. However, the results of logistic regression found gender as a strong predictor of sexual harassment definition and the history of past harassment was failed to provide a statistical significance. Educating men on male privilege, violence against women, and identifying behaviors in them that are not acceptable by women will be helpful.

Role of Sociodemographic Variables and the Mother's Active Behavior on Active Commuting to School in Children and Adolescents.

The main objective of the current study was to analyze how parents' sociodemographic characteristics, mode of commuting and physical activity (PA) act as indicators of active commuting to school (ACS) in their children and adolescents. A total of 684 paired parents (52.8% mothers) and their respective offspring (33.7% girls) were included. The participants self-reported their sociodemographic characteristics, mode of commuting, and PA. Logistic regression analyses were performed using a stepwise approach, including, as indicators, parental characteristics, mode of commuting and PA. The main outcome was child and adolescent ACS. The odds ratio (OR) and R2 of Nagelkerke were obtained for each step. Parental sociodemographic characteristics were greater indicators of child ACS than the parental mode of commuting and PA. In children, the greatest predictive variables of ACS explained 38% of the variance and were as follows: car availability (OR = 0.24), father's educational level (OR = 0.47), mother's educational level (OR = 1.95), mother's active commuting to work (OR = 4.52) and mother's salary/month (OR = 0.67). In adolescents, the greatest predictive variables of ACS explained 40% of the variance and were as follows: socioeconomic level (OR = 0.43) and father's active commuting (OR = 10.6). In conclusion, sociodemographic factors are better indicators of ACS than parents' physical activity and active commuting to work.

Do socio-demographic factors modify the effect of weather on malaria in Kanungu District, Uganda?

BackgroundThere is concern in the international community regarding the influence of climate change on weather variables and seasonality that, in part, determine the rates of malaria. This study examined the role of sociodemographic variables in modifying the association between temperature and malaria in Kanungu District (Southwest Uganda).MethodsHospital admissions data from Bwindi Community Hospital were combined with meteorological satellite data from 2011 to 2014. Descriptive statistics were used to describe the distribution of malaria admissions by age, sex, and ethnicity (i.e. Bakiga and Indigenous Batwa). To examine how sociodemographic variables modified the association between temperature and malaria admissions, this study used negative binomial regression stratified by age, sex, and ethnicity, and negative binomial regression models that examined interactions between temperature and age, sex, and ethnicity.ResultsMalaria admission incidence was 1.99 times greater among Batwa than Bakiga in hot temperature quartiles compared to cooler temperature quartiles, and that 6–12 year old children had a higher magnitude of association of malaria admissions with temperature compared to the reference category of 0–5 years old (IRR = 2.07 (1.40, 3.07)).DiscussionResults indicate that socio-demographic variables may modify the association between temperature and malaria. In some cases, such as age, the weather-malaria association in sub-populations with the highest incidence of malaria in standard models differed from those most sensitive to temperature as found in these stratified models.ConclusionThe effect modification approach used herein can be used to improve understanding of how changes in weather resulting from climate change might shift social gradients in health.

Socioemotional Resources and Mental Health in Moroccan Adolescents: A Person-Centered Approach.

Mixture modeling technics are not the one and only to perform person-centered analyses, but they do offer the possibility of integrating latent profiles into models of some complexity that include antecedents and results. When analyzing the contribution of socioemotional resources to the preservation of mental health, it is the variable-centered approaches that are the most often performed, with few examples using a person-centered approach. Moreover, if the focus is on the Arab adolescent population, to our knowledge, there is an absence of such studies. This study aims to extend the research about socioemotional resources by examining: (1) if distinguishable profiles can be identified based on scores about perceptions of different emotional abilities and levels of social support from different sources (e.g., parents, friends, and teachers/counselors); (2) if the identified profiles relate to mental health indicators, such as depression levels and health-related quality of life (HRQoL); and (3) to acknowledge if sociodemographic variables such as age or gender and positive self-views (self-esteem) ascertain the probability of pertaining to the identified profiles. The study was carried out on a large sample of Moroccan adolescents (N = 970). We adopted a person-centered approach using latent profile analysis (LPA) to establish whether different socioemotional resources profiles (e.g., emotional intelligence and social support) are present in Moroccan adolescents. Furthermore, we investigated the role of sociodemographic variables and self-esteem as antecedents of these profiles and the association of these profiles with mental health (depression and HRQoL). Results from LPA revealed three patterns of socioemotional resources (i.e., latent profiles): (1) “High socioemotional resources” (43.09%); (2) “Moderate socioemotional resources” (42.68%); and (3) “Low socioemotional resources” (14.23%). Analyses showed that Moroccan adolescents differed significantly in depression (cognitive-affective and somatic dimensions) and HRQoL depending on the profile membership. Profiles with higher levels of resources contributed positively to preserving mental health. Finally, the results show that self-esteem boosted the probability of pertaining to the profiles related to better mental health. Thus, this study extends previous research about socioemotional resources, highlighting that researchers and health professionals should consider empirically identified profiles of adolescents when explaining mental health outcomes. Therefore, the psychological intervention should be focused on enhancing the self-esteem of adolescents, to favor a high socioemotional resource profile, which results in better mental health.

Predictors of mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic in older adults: the role of socio-demographic variables and COVID-19 anxiety

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate factors related to the mental health of Peruvian older adults during the COVID-19 pandemic. The study had a cross-sectional and observational design. A total of 274 older adults in Lima, Peru (Mage = 67.86) filled out a sociodemographic survey, the Coronavirus Anxiety Scale, Mental Health Inventory-5, Patient Health Questionnaire-2 item, and Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale. A Structural Equation Model (SEM) was estimated to test an a priori model that relates the sociodemographic variables, COVID-19 Anxiety, psychological well-being, anxiety and depression. The model fit indices indicated a good fit to the data. The socio-demographic variables explained 23.8% of the variance of the COVID-19 Anxiety (R2 = .238). Socio-demographic variables explained 50.5% of psychological well-being variance, 52% of anxiety and 46.9% of depression. Also, sex, work; being diagnosed with COVID-19; family member with COVID-19 diagnosis; and time of exposure to COVID-19 information had statistically significant effects psychological well-being, anxiety and depression. In conclusion, some sociodemographic characteristics and COVID-19 anxiety affect the psychological well-being, anxiety and depression. The findings may allow for a better understanding of the mental health of older adults during the COVID-19 pandemic and guide government responses to detect, anticipate and minimize its impact on the mental health of this population.

Analyzing the Influence of Socio-Demographic Characteristics on Travel Mode Choice in Banda Aceh City Through Association Rules

In formulating improvements to integrated transportation planning for the Banda Aceh city which has been urbanizing speedily and has experienced considerable changes in growing economy and motorization, it is necessary to understand the factors that influence community choice of travel modes, one of which is the influence of the socio-demographic characteristics of the community. This is due to the importance of knowing the characteristics and behaviour of modal users in designing transportation facilities and infrastructure to be provided. In this study, association rules are used to analyse the influence of demographic characteristics on the choice of travel modes in the Banda Aceh city. The data used in this study came from survey data conducted by the Aceh Transportation Agency in 2019. After the data analysed through setting up association rules, it shows that role of socio-demographic variables on the choice of travel modes is quite significant in many aspects.

Methods: The target population for this study was all heterosexual married individuals, legally bound by the state of marriage as husband and wife. Quantitative research design and a systematic sampling technique along with a simple random sampling technique were employed to select 326 households. Frequency and percentages, means, standard deviations, Pearson correlation, independent sample T-test, one-way ANOVA and hierarchical multiple linear regressions were all used to compute sample statistic. This study aimed to assess the role of socio-demographic, sexual relationship, marital stability, marital communication and marital conflict resolution in marital satisfaction among married individuals. The target population for this study was all heterosexual married individuals, legally bound by the state of marriage as husband and wife. Quantitative research design and a systematic sampling technique along with a simple random sampling technique were employed to select 326 households. Frequency and percentages, means, standard deviations, Pearson correlation, independent sample T-test, one-way ANOVA, and hierarchical multiple linear regressions were all used to compute sample statistic. In the hierarchical multiple linear regression analysis, from the socio-demographic variables, only age and occupation type predicted significantly married individuals’ marital satisfaction, b = -.13, <i>β</i> = -.08 and b = 7.37, <i>β</i> = .09, respectively, p < .05. The result implies that age has a negative impact whereas occupation type has a positive impact on the marital satisfaction of married individuals. Sexual relationships, marital stability, marital conflict resolution, and marital communication were significant predictors of marital satisfaction, with other variables held constant, at p < .001. The most important predictors of marital satisfaction as the results of the study disclosed were sexual relationships followed by marital stability (b = .51, <i>β</i> = .28, and b = 1.04, <i>β</i> = .27, respectively, p < .001). Together all the significant independent variables in the model accounted for 74% of the variance in married individuals’ marital satisfaction and the model was significant, F (10,297) =45.83, p < .001. This study adds a sound, contextual and specific knowledge to the existing marriage counseling practices and theories as well to enhance or reduce factors for married individuals’ marital satisfaction.

Pattern and Utilization of Maternal Health Services in Jigawa State, Nigeria

&#x0D; &#x0D; &#x0D; One of the important goals of launching the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) is maternal health. Nigeria was not able to achieved the target of reduction the maternal mortality as set by MDGs as a target. Nigeria has 37 state and Jigawa state is one of those state. The state has poor indices of health indicator, the maternal mortality is high and also antenatal visit in the state is not encouraging. The objective of the study was to find out the degree (extent) of the usage of the services of the maternal health care and to examine the role of socio-demographic variables and antenatal visit on the uses of the services of maternal health system available in the state. Logistic regression (Binary), chi- square, and bivariate analysis were used and the study used the data collected from the state ministry of health. The study utilized the data for two year (2017-2018) . The finding of this study revealed that socio-economic factors greatly influence the uses of maternal health care services. Level of education (Women’s education) influences the maternal health care utilization. The study found that, the hospital based delivery, antenatal care visit utilization and seeking service after delivery varies among the women with the different level of education, age at marriage, women’s age and residence of women. The study revealed that, the women’s with the high level of education (literate) is 2 times compared to illiterate women likely to use antenatal services (OR=1.97, ANC1.95, full ANC p&lt;0.01), also in terms of hospital delivery literate women is (OR=1.52, p&lt;0.01) or 1.53 times. Women’s education encouragement and support should be advocated because is one among the many strategies to improve the utilisation of the services of maternal health.&#x0D; &#x0D; &#x0D;

Exploring health-related quality of life of Spanish domestic adult adoptees: sociodemographic characteristics, chronic medical conditions, and gender differences.

The main objective is to study the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) as a positive approach to health in adult adoptees. We will also consider comparison with population norms, relation to chronic medical conditions, the role of sociodemographic variables, and gender differences among the variables in this study. This was a cross-sectional study of 179 adult domestic adoptees from Spain aged between 18 and 44. They were recruited from a longitudinal study, which was on its third wave. They answered an interview and the self-report measure Health Survey Short Form (SF-12). ANOVAs and t test analyses to compare groups, and multiple regression to determine predictors of HRQoL, were performed. Adoptees are not different from the general population in terms of perceived physical health (PH) and mental health (MH). Both PH and MH are related to different variables (e.g., current age is negatively associated with PH, as is the number of chronic medical conditions with MH). Despite the absence of gender differences in MH perception, there were common and different predictor variables for males and females. The number of chronic medical conditions predicts HRQoL regardless of gender. For women, employment is also a predictor, and for men, other variables are being in a romantic relationship, having children, and low income. Adult adoptees are comparable to general population in terms of HRQoL, but there are associated variables (chronic medical conditions and gender) that should be considered. Post-adoption services should promote health and support in life transitions for this group.

Psychosocial aspects of first episode depression patients: An observational study

Background: Depressive disorder affects at least 20% of women and 12% of men at some time during their lifetime. Current data suggest that social stressors in the onset of depressive disorder are more relevant to the first few episodes of the illness. Objectives: The main objective of our study is to assess the role of socio-demographic variables and stressful life events in the first episode depressive patients. Materials and Methods: A total of 40 patients with a diagnosis of the first depressive episode were compared with a healthy control group to study the relationship between psychosocial factors and the first episode of depression. Individuals with a psychiatric diagnosis other than depression and those with longstanding medical illness were excluded from the study. Results: The mean age for the study group was 33.1 and that for the control group was 34 and around 85% of patients fall between 18 and 45 years. Among the 40 patients, six were suffering from moderate depression, 20 from severe depression, and the remaining 14 patients were suffering from severe depression with psychotic features. About 97.5% of patients presenting with depression had significant life events of three and above, when compared to normal controls, only 22.5% reported the same. Conclusion: Sociodemographic factors such as female sex, rural residence, and family history of mental illness and substance abuse predispose to depression. The number of life events and accumulated stress scoring predisposes the onset of the first episode of depression. The knowledge of the role of psychosocial factors can be applied for providing support and primary prevention of depression.

School sociodemographic characteristics and obesity in schoolchildren: does the obesity definition matter?

BackgroundExisting evidence on the role of sociodemographic variables as risk factors for overweight and obesity in school-aged children is inconsistent. Furthermore, findings seem to be influenced by the obesity definition applied. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate if school sociodemographic indicators were associated with weight status in Irish primary schoolchildren and whether this association was sensitive to different obesity classification systems.MethodsA nationally representative cross-sectional sample of 7542 Irish children (53.9% girls), mean age 10.4 (±1.2SD) years, participating in the Childhood Obesity Surveillance Initiative in the 2010, 2012/2013 or 2015/2016 waves were included. Height, weight and waist circumference were objectively measured. Five definitions of obesity were employed using different approaches for either body mass index (BMI) or abdominal obesity. Associations between overweight and obesity and sociodemographic variables were investigated using adjusted multilevel logistic regression analyses.ResultsChildren attending disadvantaged schools were more likely to be overweight and obese than their peers attending non-disadvantaged schools, regardless of the obesity classification system used. Associations remained significant for the BMI-based obesity definitions when the sample was stratified by sex and age group, except for boys aged 8–10.5 years. Only boys aged ≥10.5 years in disadvantaged schools had higher odds of abdominal obesity (UK 1990 waist circumference growth charts: OR = 1.56, 95%CI = 1.09–2.24; waist-to-height ratio: OR = 1.78, 95%CI = 1.14–2.79) than those in non-disadvantaged schools. No associations were observed for school urbanisation level.ConclusionsSchool socioeconomic status was a strong determinant of overweight and obesity in Irish schoolchildren, and these associations were age- and sex-dependent. School location was not associated with overweight or obesity. There remains a need to intervene with school-aged children in disadvantaged schools, specifically among those approaching adolescence, to prevent a trajectory of obesity into adult life.

The emigration intentions of Russian Jews: the role of socio-demographic variables, social networks, and satisfaction with life

ABSTRACTThe present study investigated the role of socio-demographic characteristics, social networks, and satisfaction with various aspects of life in predicting the emigration intentions of Jews living in Russia. The study’s subjects consisted of Jews and their relatives eligible for immigration to Israel under the Israeli Law of Return. The study’s participants (n = 824) lived in five metropolitan areas. Socio-demographic characteristics, social networks, and satisfaction with life in Russia together explained 23% of the variance in emigration intentions among Russian Jews. Specifically, stronger emigration intentions were associated with a younger age, a smaller number of Jewish ancestors, a lower level of religiosity, a smaller number of Russian friends, a larger number of friends living abroad, a lower level of psychological well-being, and dissatisfaction with the education and healthcare systems in Russia. In addition, Jews living in Moscow and St. Petersburg expressed stronger emigration intentions than Jews living in other cities in Russia.
