Family business exposure and succession intention: the role of entrepreneurial self-efficacy and business performance

Understanding the next generation’s aspirations to inherit their parents’ business is critically important for securing intrafamily succession and longevity of the family business. Using a large dataset of 42,863 university students from 48 countries, we examine how the entrepreneurial self-efficacy (ESE) of youth moderates the relationship between family business exposure and succession intention. Our results indicate that a greater ESE enhances the influence of family business exposure on succession intention, while the effect of ESE is further moderated by family business performance, implying that this effect is greater in more (rather than less) successful family firms. By underscoring the role of both young individuals’ early engagement in the business and family business success, this study provides valuable implications for family firm leaders and the next generation that may assist in the design of more comprehensive policies for encouraging succession within the family.

Unveiling the Nexus: A Conceptual Framework of Entrepreneurship Education, Self-Efficacy, and Intentions

The objective of this conceptual paper is to provide a comprehensive framework that illuminates the interrelated network of entrepreneurship education (EE), entrepreneurial self-efficacy (ESE), and entrepreneurial intentions (EI). The theoretical approach examines the impact of EE on ESE, the influence of ESE on EI, and the role of ESE as a mediator in these relationships. The findings highlight the positive impact of EE on self-efficacy and, consequently, entrepreneurial aspirations. This paper provides valuable insights for researchers, practitioners, and policymakers, emphasizing the importance of targeted educational interventions to foster entrepreneurial outcomes. The study addresses a gap in the current literature and sets a foundation for future theoretical and empirical research on the subject.

ENTREPRENEURIAL SELF-EFFICACY DRIVES AND AMPLIFIES PERCEIVED OPPORTUNITY TOWARDS THE ENTREPRENEURIAL INTENTION OF ULOS WEAVERS GENERATION

The basic problem of family business succession planning is whether the generation intends to continue the family business, so this study aims to examine the intention of generations to continue their family's ulos weaving business based on the planned behavior theory (Ajzen, 1991). The Purposive Random Sampling method was selected and obtained as many as 131 generations of ulos weavers aged at least 15 years in North Tapanuli Regency who were collected using the snowball technique. Data analysis used the Structural Equation Model with the Lisrel program. The findings of this study indicate that entrepreneurial self-efficacy (ESE) plays a role in encouraging perceived opportunity (PO) towards entrepreneurial intention (EI). However, the role of entrepreneurial self-efficacy (interaction with PO to become ESEXPO) cannot strengthen PO towards EI. Gender effect testing found that women's EI was higher than men's because it was related to weaving skills. The weakness of this study is the cross-sectional time dimension so the implications for future research are the longitudinal time dimension, especially for testing moderation as well as in different contexts for testing the role of moderation or results that are inconsistent with a combination of theories so as to find novelty. In addition, other predictors and controls need to be added to enrich research in the field of family entrepreneurship. The implication for family business actors is to have a succession plan long before being 'forced' or as early as possible so that entrepreneurial self-efficacy and perceived opportunity arise, as well as other factors (internal and external) that are needed by the next generation of family businesses.

The Effect of Entrepreneurial Education, Mindset, and Creativity on Entrepreneurial Intention of University Students: Assisted in the Mediation Role of Entrepreneurial Self Efficacy

The growth in the number of young students in Indonesia is increasing rapidly every day, making many innovative ideas emerge that are being implemented by many young people to become an attractive business. This phenomenon can be seen from various perspectives and factors that make students have high entrepreneurial intentions, namely in terms of education, mindset, creativity, and student self-confidence, which are combined to create interesting and innovative business ideas. Therefore, researchers want to conduct research on some of these factors to determine the influence of existing variables. Researchers used quantitative methods by distributing questionnaires to 133 respondents who had received education about entrepreneurship or business. Processing the data in this study using the media assisted by the SmartPLS 3 software. The results of this study show that the four factors mentioned above have a linkage and influence on the entrepreneurial intentions of respondents

Personality traits, entrepreneurial self-efficacy, and entrepreneurial intention among vocational students

<span lang="EN-US">Entrepreneurship in technical and vocational education is a current and relevant topic. While the role of entrepreneurial self-efficacy (ESE) and personality traits as determinants of entrepreneurial intention (EI) has been extensively studied, the role of ESE and personality traits as determinants of vocational students’ EI is still poorly understood. Thus, this study employed ESE and big five personality traits to explore the determinants of EI among vocational college students. This study’s survey had a sample size of 162 technical vocational education and training (TVET) college students, enrolled in technology in automotive, technology in welding, and technology in refrigeration and air conditioning programs. Data were analyzed using Pearson Correlation and Multiple Linear Regression. The results indicate that apart from neuroticism, openness to experience, conscientiousness, agreeableness, and extraversion were positively associated with EI. The results also confirm that ESE is a predictor of EI. Going forward, the article intends to contribute to a better understanding of ESE and personality traits that influence vocational students’ EI, as well as provide some important insights into the unique aspects of TVETs that empower youth to actively participate in micro-entrepreneurial initiatives. This study encourages academics and policymakers to reconsider the approach used in entrepreneurship education in the vocational setup.</span>

COVID-19 as an external enabler: The role of entrepreneurial self-efficacy and entrepreneurial orientation

ABSTRACT We examine COVID-19 as an external enabling mechanism and propose the interplay between entrepreneurial self-efficacy (ESE) beliefs and entrepreneurial orientation (EO) may help explain why some small firms are enabled to exploit disequilibrating environmental changes. We predict that ESE’s relationship with performance is mediated through its strategic posture, and the perceived impact of COVID moderates this relationship. We test our moderated-mediation model using data collected over multiple waves from a sample of 190 small business owners. While our findings suggest that an entrepreneur’s self-efficacy may contribute to firm performance alone, it appears insufficient to mitigate the perceived negative consequences caused by the pandemic. However, ESE may play a pivotal role when channeled through the firm’s strategic orientation. Our results suggest embracing an entrepreneurial orientation is appropriate for navigating stiff economic headwinds and unprecedented uncertainty. Still, the benefits of such a posture can be fully realized only when entrepreneurial self-efficacious managers lead the firm.

Role of Entrepreneurial Self-Efficacy and Risk-Taking Tendencies in the Relationship Between Financial Literacy and Entrepreneurial Intention

Background: In order for entrepreneurs and people who intend to start a venture to be able to use their budgets optimally, to evaluate their investments correctly, to take risks for investment areas that will create opportunities, it is necessary to possess a proper set of skills.Research objectives: The study's primary purpose is to determine the mediating role of entrepreneurs' self-efficacy and risk-taking tendency in the relationship between financial literacy and entrepreneurial intention. The study also aims to establish whether relationships between financial literacy, entrepreneur self-efficacy, risk-taking tendency, entrepreneurial intention, significantly differ according to gender, age, financial literacy and entrepreneurship training.Research design and methods: The sample of the study consists of university students who are potential entrepreneur candidates in the future. Relationships between financial literacy, entrepreneurial self-efficacy, risk-taking tendency and entrepreneurial intention were analysed using simple linear regression analysis. SPSS PROCESS (Hayes) plugin was used to test the mediating effects.Results: It was observed that the participants could be evaluated at an acceptable level in terms of financial literacy. However, they were at a moderate level in terms of entrepreneurship self-efficacy and intention and risk-taking tendency. When the relationships between financial literacy, entrepreneurial self-efficacy, risk-taking tendency and entrepreneurial intention were examined, it was concluded that there were significant and positive relationships between all of the variables discussed.Conclusions: Financial literacy, self-efficacy, risk-taking tendency and entrepreneurial intention are features that are in meaningfully supportive relationships.

Personal initiative, entrepreneurial self-efficacy and social entrepreneurial venture creation

ABSTRACT The addition of new social entrepreneurial ventures to the economy is vital for economic growth and development. However, little is known about the role of entrepreneurial self-efficacy and personal initiative in creating social ventures that solve social problems at the bottom of the pyramid. This study examines the mediating role of personal initiative on the relationship between entrepreneurial self-efficacy and social entrepreneurial venture creation. With a quantitative methodological approach, hypotheses were statistically tested using structural equation modelling. This study incorporates Personal Initiative Theory and Social Cognitive Theory into an applied theoretical framework that explains the factors that influence social entrepreneurial venture creation. Drawing on a sample of 243 owner managers in Community Based Organisations in Kampala, our results show that personal initiative partially mediates the relationship between entrepreneurial self-efficacy and social entrepreneurial venture creation. The study contributes to social entrepreneurship literature using evidence from Uganda, a developing country in Sub Saharan Africa.

The Role of Entrepreneurial Self-Efficacy and Entrepreneurial Passion in Firm Performance

Objective - This research clarifies how entrepreneurial self-efficacy (ESE) affects performance, and entrepreneurial passion (EP) may vary the ESE- firm performance relationship as a mediator. Methodology/Technique – The data was collected using a questionnaire distributed to 400 entrepreneurs in Sakon Nakhon, Nakhon Phanom, and Mukdahan Province, Thailand. All measures had acceptable Cronbach’s alpha reliabilities. Descriptive statistics, mean, and standard deviation were used to analyze the data. The conceptual model and hypotheses were tested by using linear regression analysis. Confirmatory factor analysis was used to test construct validity. Finding – The results show that the entrepreneurial self-efficacy had no effect of multicollinearity in the independent variables (Hair et. al., 2014). Therefore, it was possible to test the equation analysis based on the hypothesis using linear regression. In terms of direct relationship testing, entrepreneurial self-efficacy directly had a significant positive impact on firm performance and passion. In addition, entrepreneurial passion directly influenced firm performance. In terms of indirect relationship testing, entrepreneurial passion is a partial mediation for entrepreneurial self-efficacy and firm performance. Novelty – This paper examines how self-efficacy (ESE) affects firm performance and how self-efficacy (ESE) affects firm performance when mediated by passion. Small enterprises contribute significantly to the economic growth and prosperity in countries (Birch, 1987). The field of entrepreneurship represents an increasingly dynamic productive force in the economy (Gavron et al., 1998). Various entrepreneurship researchers opposed the construct of entrepreneurial self-efficacy (ESE), defined as an individual's belief in his or her ability to achieve various entrepreneurial tasks (Miao, Qian and Ma, 2017). Many studies have found positive relationships between ESE and entrepreneurial intention. On the contrary, there are some ambiguity on relationship between ESE and entrepreneur's post- start up performance (McGee et al. 2009). One of the affective entrepreneurial dimension is passion. Many researchers have opposed passion as a key element of entrepreneurial effort (Cardon et al., 2009; Chen et al., 2009) because it is able to bring up creativity and the recognition of new information patterns critical to the encounter and exploitation of encouraging opportunities (Baron, 2008; Cardon et al. 2013). However, there is little research focusing on entrepreneurial passion (EP), leading to business performance (Cardon et al. 2013). Thus, this research clarify how entrepreneurial self-efficacy (ESE) effect to business performance, and entrepreneurial passion (EP) may vary the ESE- business performance relationship as a mediator. A Moderated Mediation Model of Entrepreneurial Self-Efficacy, Institutional Environment, and Entrepreneurial Orientation for SME Development

A vital component for sustainable economic development is the entrepreneurship regardless of the social, geopolitical, and economic situations. However, it is an intimidating challenge to develop and maintain productive small and medium enterprises (SMEs). This article investigates the role of entrepreneurial self-efficacy (ESE) and institutional environment in entrepreneurial orientation and the development of a successful entrepreneurship-based SME. It integrates the institutional climate, self-efficacy, and theory of planned behavior to address the abovementioned challenge in the context of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. This study adopts an instrument to collect data from Saudi SME owners and employs SPSS Amos to analyze the proposed moderated mediation model. The outcomes of this study identify the contribution of ESE and institutional environment in the productiveness of an effective entrepreneurship-based SME.

Employees’ decision to participate in corporate venturing: A conjoint experiment of financial and non-financial motivations

This paper is a replication and extension of a prior study that examines the factors influencing employees’ willingness to participate in corporate ventures. We use a conjoint experiment to build knowledge surrounding the impact of motivating factors beyond financial profit as well as the role of entrepreneurial self-efficacy. Our replication results largely support prior findings and indicate that the extra effort required for participating in a corporate venture is the most important factor driving employees’ decision. Our replication also extends prior findings in two critical ways. First, it shows that independence is essential in developing a comprehensive understanding of the decision-making process for participating in a corporate venture. Second, it demonstrates that entrepreneurial self-efficacy influences the effects of employment risk and expected success on the relationship between profit sharing and employees’ willingness to participate in a corporate venture. Our results suggest that individual-level differences provide additional explanatory power and a fuller understanding of the employees’ decision to participate in corporate ventures. They also yield important practical implications for managers who wish to motivate their employees towards the corporate venturing path.

Institutional Environment, Entrepreneurial Self-efficacy and Orientation for SME in Nigeria

The economic performance related implications of entrepreneurship and entrepreneurship based SMEs are questionable in the Nigeria context due to lack of entrepreneurial tendency and mismatch between education acquisition and market-based skills requirement; lack of proper institutional infrastructure that facilitates in creation, identification and exploitation of opportunities and acquisition of resources. This research reviews the role of entrepreneurial self-efficacy and institutional environment in entrepreneurial orientation and development of a successful entrepreneurship-based SME. Entrepreneurship, regardless of social, economic and geopolitical circumstances, is a critical engine for sustainable economic growth. Entrepreneurship is frequently considered as a remedy to the severe global sustainability challenges by both scholarly as well as practitioner-based research findings. Entrepreneurship itself is an outcome of a set of human characteristics that enables one to identify, exploit and even create market opportunities related to incremental growth. These characteristics enable entrepreneurs to comprehend and utilize the known and familiar tactics to market-related prospects while simultaneously trying to identify new opportunities and approaches that lend efficiency. Entrepreneurial Intention Revisited: The Role Of Entrepreneurial Self-Efficacy

Entrepreneurship is a key aspect that has often been stressed in the effort to turn Malaysia into a high-income and inclusive developed country. However, producing a successful entrepreneur is not an easy task. The current generation of students has not reached a firm level of self-efficacy. They sometimes easily waver when faced with various forms of challenges and the waves of modernisation. Thus, this study will analyse the relationship between the sources of performance accomplishment self-efficacy and verbal persuasion based on Albert Bandura’s Self-Efficacy Theory towards entrepreneurial intention among public university students in Malaysia. It proposes the best predictor variable that encourages public university students in Malaysia to venture into the entrepreneurial field. Using proportionate stratified random sampling, this study sampled 352 respondents from four universities, namely Universiti Utara Malaysia, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Universiti Malaysia Kelantan, and Universiti Putra Malaysia. The finding of this study shows that entrepreneurial intention is high when performance accomplishment self-efficacy and verbal persuasion efficacy are high. There is a significant relationship between entrepreneurial intention and self-efficacy. It is hoped that this study will be used to assist in outlining entrepreneurship programmes and activities to enhance students’ self-efficacy and entrepreneurial intention. The implementation of effective teaching and learning methods is essential in nurturing entrepreneurial potential among public university students in Malaysia.

Belief in Luck and Entrepreneurial Decision: The Mediating Role of Entrepreneurial Self-efficacy

This study investigates the effect of belief in luck on entrepreneurial intentions. We tested our hypotheses in a laboratory study (Study 1), a survey (Study 2) and an archival study (Study 3). Two hundred and fifty seven business majors from a public university provided responses for the first two studies and archival data from two datasets was used for Study 3. Belief in stable luck was found to be a predictor of intentions for venture creation. In addition, entrepreneurial self-efficacy mediated the relationship between the luck belief and the pursuit of an entrepreneurial career. Overall, we found strong evidence which supports our hypothesis that belief in stable luck is beneficial for promoting entrepreneurship.
