Participation in local economic development: Insights from Benoni, South Africa

Background: Community participation in democratic societies cannot be overstated, as it is a fundamental pillar that allows community members to have a voice in economic, social, and political discourse.Aim: This article investigated the significance of community participation in LED, identifying the barriers and drivers of community involvement to provide recommendations to enhance and promote greater community engagement in Benoni, South Africa.Methods: The study adopted a mixed methods research approach. It conducted (n = 280) surveys from residents and (n = 5) in-depth interviews with municipal officials regarding the role of community participation in LED.Results: The findings reveal five challenges to community participation: limited avenues for participation, a lack of confidence in leadership, lack of action on residents’ suggestions, limited understanding of the value and importance of participation, and lack of trust in local leadership. However, the study also established that community participation is crucial to LED and contributes to providing legitimacy to local government projects, ensuring leadership accountability and better trust in leadership, and to ascertain that residents affect changes they want to see in their communities.Conclusion: The study concludes that community participation is vital for successful LED in Benoni. Addressing the challenges identified can lead to more effective and sustainable development initiatives.Contribution: This research makes several contributions to the field of LED and community development. It emphasises enabling and encouraging community participation in shaping LED. The study’s insights into the barriers and drivers of community involvement provide a foundation for designing targeted interventions to enhance participation.

Analysis of Participatory Approaches of Community-Based Sustainable Marine Protected Area Management Groups

This study was conducted to see the role of community participation in the management of community-based marine protected areas. In addition, this study also shows the impact of conservation area management on improving community welfare and improving the quality of the environment. The research design used is a mixed method which is a combination of qualitative and quantitative analysis. Qualitative analysis uses in-depth interview methods with resource persons, while quantitative analysis uses the one-sample test method to test respondents' perceptions related to research variables. The research sample consisted of the Head of the Management Group, Village Head, Traditional Head, Religious Leaders, and Community Member Representatives in Roon District, Teluk Wondama Regency, West Papua, Indonesia. Research findings show that the role of the community in the management of conservation areas is very high, this can be seen from the supervisors of conservation area management groups consisting of Government, Religious, and Social groups. In addition, active participation from the community around the conservation area is also the key to the success of good area management. The findings of one sample test showed, that 1) The participation of members of the Marine Protected Area group has been classified as high, 2) Sasi culture has been proven to affect the income level of the community, 3) Member participation has been proven to be active in decision making, 4) The existence of Sasi has been proven to increase the sustainability of natural resources, 5) Proven to successfully contribute to the achievement of SDG number 14.

The Association Between Community Participation and Loneliness Among Patients in Rural Community Hospitals: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Introduction Loneliness amongadultsis a critical public health issue, particularly in rural areas where social isolation can be more pronounced. Understanding the factors that influence loneliness can guide the development of effective interventions. This study explores the impact of demographic, health-related, and social participation factors on loneliness among rural Japaneseadults, focusing on the role of community participation. Method This cross-sectional study was conducted with rural Japaneseadults who regularly visited rural community hospitals. Data were collected on participants' demographic characteristics, health status, and social participation and analyzed using a multivariate logistic regression model to identify factors associated with higher levels of loneliness. The covariates included age, sex, body mass index (BMI), chronic health conditions, and community participation. Results The study found that community participation had a significant negative association with loneliness, with an odds ratio (OR) of 0.46 (p < 0.01), indicating that individuals engaged in community activities were substantially less likely to experience higher levels of loneliness. Higher BMI was associated with lower odds of loneliness (OR = 0.93, p < 0.02), suggesting a protective effect against loneliness. Conclusion The findings highlight the paramount importance of community engagement in mitigating loneliness among rural Japanese adults. The inverse relationship between BMI and loneliness suggests that BMI and social participation influence loneliness. These insights underscore the need for comprehensive interventions that promote community participation and address the multifaceted nature of loneliness. Future research should further explore the mechanisms through which community engagement and BMI impact loneliness to develop targeted strategies for improving the well-being of rural adults.

Community Participation in Local Political Processes: A Systematic Literature Review

The purpose of this study was to use a systematic literature review technique to describe and thoroughly investigate the understanding of community participation in the local political context. this framework, the role of community participation is considered a crucial element that has a significant impact in the process of policy formation and determining the direction of decision making at the local level. Involving the community in the local political process is not only an indicator of the health of democracy, but also the main basis for creating policies that are more representative and responsive to the needs and aspirations of local communities. By detailing these dimensions of community participation through a systematic literature review, this research aims to provide a solid conceptual foundation for understanding the complex dynamics involved in interactions between communities and local politics. The research results show several dominant themes in this study, such as Political participation and Community Participation. Furthermore, the themes that are most closely linked in this study are community development and developing countries. The most interesting finding in the in-depth study of local politics is the existence of several keywords that are closely related, such as broken window and disability.

Study of Waste Generations and Potential Implementation of Community-Based Waste Management in Residential Area

Bogor is one of the cities in Indonesia with a dense population and is experiencing population growth every year. Like other city problems, waste is also a problem in Bogor City. Waste generation in cities like Bogor City has been continued to increase since 2005. Even though the Bogor City Government has socialized with changes in waste management with a new paradigm, those living in residential areas are still using the old paradigm principle which is collect-transport-throw (end of a pipe). Therefore, a study was conducted to determine the waste generated and the perception and role of community participation in managing waste, especially household waste in residential areas. In this study, data collection was carried out in one of the housing areas in Bogor City, namely the Pakuan Regency. The collection of daily waste data to measure waste generation and composition is carried out based on the Indonesian National Standard 19-3964-1994 method. This data analysis technique uses a qualitative descriptive analysis with respondents differentiated on the basis of type of house and the number of occupants. This research produces data on waste generation for small, medium, and large house types 286,12 kg/houses/year, 366,57 tons/houses/year, and 523,67 kg/houses//year respectively. The result showed that the total of household waste, the level of participation and the household’s willingness to pay for TPS 3R plan made it possible to implement the TPS 3R program in this residential. Operational cost for TPS 3R can be covered from the retribution annual revenue.

The Role of Community Participation in Supporting Tomohon City Regional Regulation No. 1 of 2021

This research aims to evaluate community participation in efforts to support the Regional Regulation of Tomohon City No. 1 of 2021 concerning Increasing Discipline and Law Enforcement of Health Protocols in Preventing and Controlling Covid-19. This study uses a qualitative method. The research results show that Regional Regulation of Tomohon City no. 1 of 2021 has been implemented well by the government in terms of socialization, implementation and supervision. However, community participation is still relatively low. In fact, the city of Tomohon is often included in the red zone for the spread of the Covid-19 outbreak. This proves that the level of community participation is relatively low. The influencing factors are 1) lack of understanding and awareness, 2) spread of incorrect information (hoaxes), 3) distrust of the government, 4) pandemic fatigue, 5) social and economic factors.

Community participation in waste management in abrasion areas

The role of community participation is needed for waste management so that there is no spike in waste accumulation in abrasion areas, especially puddles, the conceptual framework of community participation in abrasion areas and communities that are not affected by abrasion disasters. The purpose of community researchers in abrasion areas is to reduce waste collection so that the environment in the area is maintained by water diota sustainability. The method used provides community understanding to manage waste using an approach referring to existing regulations in Indonesia. As a result of this research, surveys in the area show that people do not manage their waste and often throw garbage in the water and on the roadside. The concept of community participation, duty, and responsibility leads to the reduction of recycling generation with the 3R system and reuse so the responsibility of the community who dispose of waste culture to reduce the burden of handling waste in the final waste processing.

Factors that Play a Role in Community Participation in Creating Healthy Alleys in Makassar City

This research aims to reveal the factors that play a role in community participation in creating Healthy Hallways. This research is qualitative research using a Rapid Assessment Procedures design. The informants for this research were determined using purposive sampling. The data collection technique used in-depth interviews with seven community members: 1 RT head, 1 RW head, 1 Community Health Center staff, two health cadres, and one village head. This research was analyzed using the "Content Analysis" method, then interpreted and presented in narrative and matrix form. The research results found that the factors that play the most role in community participation are the will/awareness and leadership of the local government. Thus, Community Health Center health workers responsible as health tunnel supervisors must guide the form of Communication, Information, and Education (KIE) to the community to increase community participation in the Healthy Aisle program.

Assessment of Solid Waste Management Practices and Role of Community Participation in Mettu Town, Ethiopia

Solid waste management has become a major public health and environmental concern in urban areas of Ethiopia. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the status of the existing solid waste management and to assess the attitude and role of the community in Mettu town. In order to accomplish these objectives, both primary and secondary data were gathered and analyzed by descriptive statistics. The sample size included of 96 members of households, business owners, kebele leaders, municipal workers, solid waste collectors and health extension workers who were selected randomly. Based on the data that generated from the respondents municipal solid waste management system is very weak in terms of status, spatial coverage, community involvement, and solid waste management facility. Among 96 about 84 (87.5%) respondents are not satisfied with the existing solid waste management. The communities participate very careless to clean their front yards, street and see it as the responsibility of the municipality. This poor status of solid waste management is intensified by poor contribution of stakeholders. Therefore, the government should be engaged in awareness creation and training all communities and stakeholders to upgrade the existing low status of solid waste management services in Mettu town.

Community Participation and Performance of One Cup Milk Per Child Programme in Rwanda; A Case of Selected School Based Early Childhood Development’s in Gicumbi District

The study lookd at the role of community participation on the performance of one cup milk per child programme in Rwanda especially in Gicumbi District (2019-2021). Specific Objectives were to examine the influence of program planning, decision making and monitoring and evaluation on the performance of one cup milk per child programme in Gicumbi District. The study was guided by stakeholder theory and resource based view theory. The research adopted a combination of descriptive and analytic research designs to assess the community's involvement in the program and evaluate its effectiveness. The target population consisted of committee members, student committees, parent committees, and program teams at the district and sector levels, with a total population size of 244 individuals. The research used purposive sampling to select participants with relevant information, and data was collected through questionnaires, interviews, observations, and documentary reviews. The collected data was analyzed using descriptive statistics, correlation analysis and multiple linear regressions. Findings on the first objective confirmed that the community's suggestions and input were considered, together with the resources that were available, while designing the One Cup Milk Per Child Programme in the Gicumbi district stated by 85.3% respondents strongly agreed and agreed. Findings on the second objective confirmed that healthier judgments about the One Cup Milk Per Child Programme in the Gicumbi District are made as a result of gathering pertinent community involvement information, stated by 89.7% respondents strongly agreed and agreed. Findings on the third objective showed the community is aware of the program's goals and objectives, which helped with the creation and execution of One Cup Milk Per Child Programme in the Gicumbi District, stated by 94.1% respondents strongly agreed and agreed. The correlation matrix results indicated there is a very strong correlation between program planning and performance of One Cup Milk Per Child Programme as Pearson correlation is 0.917** with the p-value of 0.000, which is less than standard significance levels of 0.01. This indicates that, out of the considered other factors influencing performance of One Cup Milk Per Child Programme in Rwanda, only program planning has significant and high positive effect on the performance of One Cup Milk Per Child Programme in Gicumbi district. This eventually signifies that planning for the program is very vital and assists in the management of the stakeholders.&nbsp; The research recommended that management of school programme for One Cup Milk Per Child should choose among best decision alternative that improve performance in the programmes in the district.&nbsp; Management of the program should ensure that community members have a control over the choosing and electing One Cup Milk Per Child Programme committee members in the district. Management should ensure that community is understanding the goals and objectives of the program to aid the design and implementation of One Cup Milk Per Child Programme in Gicumbi district. The Role of Community Participation in the Development of an Integrated Development Plan in the Greater Taung Local Municipality

This empirical study was conducted to assess community participation in the development of the IDP as a management planning tool for effectively improving service delivery in the Greater Taung Local Municipality. A qualitative research method and case study design were used in this study with the objective of obtaining the views and understanding of community members (ward committees) and municipal officials regarding their participation in the Integrated Development Planning of the Greater Taung Local Municipality. Non-probability sampling, such as purposive sampling, structured interviews, and focus group interviews, were utilised to get perceptions from community members (ward committees) as well as the municipal officials of the Greater Taung Local Municipality regarding community participation. A key finding is that people at the grassroots level have little understanding of how government structures work, making it difficult for them to participate in meaningful and effective ways. Due to a lack of consultation on important municipal activities such as the IDP draft that affect the daily lives of community members, this has resulted in too many service delivery protests in the Greater Taung Local Municipality. We recommend that a management planning tool such as the Integrated Development Plan (IDP) be adopted to improve service delivery in municipalities and conclude that the IDP must be a requirement for successful municipal governance and service delivery as expected.

The Role of Community Participation and Social Inclusion in Successful Historic City Center Regeneration in the Mediterranean Region

Historic city center regeneration in the Mediterranean region is often seen as a tool for economic development and tourism promotion. However, the success of regeneration initiatives is not only dependent on financial investments and physical interventions but also on the social, cultural, and environmental sustainability of the projects. Community participation and social inclusion are two important factors that can contribute to the long-term success of historic city center regeneration in the Mediterranean region. This paper provides an overview of the existing literature on community participation and social inclusion in historic city center regeneration and explores their role in successful regeneration projects in the Mediterranean region. The paper argues that community participation can foster a sense of ownership and collective identity among local residents and can provide valuable knowledge and resources for the planning and implementation of regeneration initiatives. Social inclusion, on the other hand, can help to ensure that the benefits of regeneration are distributed fairly and equitably among all members of the community, including marginalized and vulnerable groups. The paper provides case studies of successful historic city center regeneration projects in the Mediterranean region, including Valencia (Spain), Palermo (Italy), and Chania (Greece), to illustrate the importance of community participation and social inclusion in achieving sustainable and inclusive urban regeneration. The paper concludes by highlighting the need for more research and policy attention to be paid to these critical factors in historic city center regeneration initiatives in the Mediterranean region.

Civil Society Organisation in Combatting Human Trafficking — Experiences from South Asia

Although disasters do not discriminate among people but they exacerbates the pre-existing vulnerabilities which are often ignored or difficult to visualise by policy makers of disaster risk reduction (DRR). One such vulnerability leads to human trafficking. It simply makes a bad situation worse. Most cases of human traffick- ing are prevalent in areas that reel under abject poverty belonging to the most marginalised and vulnerable sections of the society. They remain confined at the tail end of the country’s socio-economic profile. People who get trafficked are mostly for purposes of labour, commercial sexual exploitation, organ trade and domes- tic servitude. The role of Community Participation and Institutions are significant in developing the vertical and the horizontal linkages. The policy strategies formed at the top meant for the vulnerable, will remain unfinished unless they reach the grassroots. Without the CSOs (Civil Society Organisations) this would be impossible. The dots need to be joined from the macro to the micro level. The NGOs (Non-Governmental Organizations), CSOs and government officials need to work in conformity to get the message home.

Peran Partisipasi Masyarakat Dalam Penyusunan Perda Tentang Perlindungan Buruh Migran Di Kabupaten Blitar

One of the reform eras was marked by the implementation of democracy in all life in society, nation, and state. In a democracy, the role of community participation in the preparation of regional regulations is very urgent. Therefore, this study examines the role of community participation in drafting a regional regulation on the protection of migrant workers in the Blitar Regency. This qualitative descriptive research uses a sociological juridical approach in conducting its research. The data collection technique used in-depth interviews, documentation, and the participation of researchers in the research area. While the data analysis technique uses content analysis by sorting out the data according to the problem being studied. This study resulted in the following conclusions. First, the role of community participation in the preparation of regional regulations regarding the protection of migrant workers in Blitar Regency is based on Law Number 28 of 1999 Article 9 paragraph 1. migrant workers, including community forums and special committees. Third, the implementation of community aspirations in Blitar Regency is carried out with the following three things, among others: socialization through print and electronic media, stakeholders, and related government.

How context influences the functionality of community-level health governance structures: A case study of community health committees in Kenya.

Community Health Committees (CHCs) are mechanisms through which communities participate in the governance and oversight of community health services. While there is renewed interest in strengthening community participation in the governance of community health services, there is limited evidence on how context influences community-level structures of governance and oversight. The objective of this study was to examine how contextual factors influence the functionality of CHCs in Kajiado, Migori, and Nairobi Counties in Kenya. Using a case study design, we explored the influence of context on CHCs using 18 focus group discussions with 110 community members (clients, CHC members, and community health volunteers [CHVs]) and interviews with 33 health professionals. Essential CHC functions such as 'leadership' and 'management' were weak, partly because Health professionals did not involve CHCs in developing health plans. Community Health Committees were active in the supervision of CHVs, reviewing their household reports, although they did not utilise these data for making decisions. Resource mobilisation and evaluation of health programs were affected by the lack of administrative and operational support, such as training. Despite having influential membership, CHCs could not provide leadership and management functions. Health system actors perceived the roles of CHCs as service providers rather than structures for governance and oversight. Insufficient awareness of CHC roles among health professionals, lack of training and operational support for community-based activities constrained CHCs' functionality and thus their role in community participation. While there are efforts to institutionalise community-level governance structures for health at sub-national level, there is a need to scale-up these efforts countrywide. We recommend that community-level governance structures be empowered, mandated, and provided with resources to take on the responsibility of overseeing community health services and exacting accountability from health providers.

Insights into the Role of Community Participation as a Tool for Local Support: A Normative Model for Competitive and Sustainable Destination Development

Community participation as an efficient tool for gaining local residents' support for the development of sustainable and competitive tourist destinations has been adequately established in the tourism discourse. However, due to the dynamic nature of the industry and the associated complexities involved, the conceptualization in terms of theory and operationalization of the notion concerning practicalities is still debated. Given that the wrong conceptualization of the phenomenon could lead to wrong operationalization which would translate into unwanted consequences both for the destination developers and destination communities, the issue cannot be ignored. To address the issue, this study proposes a normative model of community participation with an aim to put some of these complexities in a clear perspective. By employing Tosun`s typology, it is argued that community participation in tourism planning and decision-making, operationalization and management, and benefit receiving takes place at different levels based on the degree of control and authority that local residents have over the tourism development process. To ensure meaningful participation in all the major stages of the developmental process, local communities need to be adequately empowered. A high level of empowerment would ensure spontaneous participation which is the most desired level of participation. On the contrary, a lower level of empowerment would result in coercive participation with the least control and benefits reaching the local communities. It would ultimately lead to antagonization and a lack of local support for any destination development strategies that the developers adopt for sustainable and competitive tourism in the locality.

The role of community participation in the spatial development of deteriorated residential areas Al-Imam neighborhood in the city of Nasiriyah: a case study

Iraqi cities in general face a slew of issues, including deterioration of the internal and external residential environment for some residential districts, deterioration of major infrastructure services, and bad economic, living, and construction conditions. As a result, the Ministry of Construction and Housing took the initiative, in collaboration with the Habitat Organization, to carry out a project to upgrade a number of deteriorated residential neighbourhoods, including Al-Imam neighbourhood in Nasiriyah, as a local experiment aimed at achieving spatial development with community participation. The research problem was established by not incorporating community engagement and activating the mechanisms of intrusion towards sustainable spatial development when conversing with residents as one of the strategies for creating and upgrading civilized places. The following hypothesis guided the research: Adoption of effective community participation policies aids in the rehabilitation of damaged residential areas and the achievement of long-term development. The study contained a theoretical component dealing with the notion of community participation and upgrading, as well as a practical component including the identification of the study area and the processes used in the process of upgrading community participation. The study also included a questionnaire for a random sample of residents to complete regarding the type of community participation in upgrading, and the study found that there is a larger need for a process of awareness, education, and training of people to participate in upgrading. Housing unit improvements were not at the required level due to a lack of funding and poor participation of residents in the construction and restoration process, and improvements to educational services were simple and included school frontispieces, green areas were not allocated, and infrastructure services were not established. The study came to a number of conclusions and recommendations regarding the need to rehabilitate human and material resources, stimulate community participation in the planning and management of residential areas, and achieve long-term spatial development.

Legal Humanism Based on Local Wisdom: Progressive Legal Development Study in Magelang

Legal development aims to realize justice, certainty, and legal benefits, so legal development is explored in the social interaction of society itself. This research is concerned with the development of progressive and humanist law based on local wisdom. The concept looks at the relationship between 1) local wisdom and legal development, 2) local community participation and legal development, and 3) progressive legal development based on local wisdom. The type of juridical sociological research, data collection techniques with documentation, observation, and interviews, then the data analysis technique used is the interaction analysis model. The results of the study are the existence of local wisdom values in influencing the development of law in the community, namely the value of mutual cooperation and the value of deliberation. Community participation in the development of law in society has space for community participation in legal developments since planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation. The values of local wisdom and community participation have potential in the development of progressive-humanist law, namely in the development of progressive and humanist law influenced by the values of local wisdom and the role of community participation so as to be able to build a law of conscience, respect human dignity and be able to provide a sense of justice according to the noble values that live in society. The suggestion from this research is that the community always maintains and preserves local wisdom that lives and grows in people's lives. The community and local government always maintain a synergistic relationship in the implementation of democratic community participation. In policy planning, it always explores the values of local wisdom in society and always involves community participation in creating progressive and humanist laws.

The Role of Community Participation in Cross-Sector Social Partnerships

Communities, intended as self-organized informal groups, are much less structured than nonprofit organizations typically considered by Cross-Sector Social Partnership (CSSP) studies. Building on the empirical investigation of a real CSSP, this article offers an in-depth analysis of the ambivalent dynamics implied by partnership with such communities. Our findings indicate that the mechanisms that create room for innovative collaboration opportunities made available by these communities (such as co-innovation, pricing co-determination, co-financing, and democratic decision making) can also, over time, adversely affect the partnership and cause it to permanently lose its shared purpose. In our conclusion, we provide potential remedies for the latter scenario and discuss how they may enrich CSSP literature.

The Role of Community Participation in Planning and Executing Malaria Interventions: Experience from Implementation of Biolarviciding for Malaria Vector Control in Southern Tanzania.

Background Malaria remains a disease of great public health importance in 85 countries globally. Developing countries face resource constraints in implementing public health interventions aiming at controlling malaria. Promoting community participation may contribute to rational and effective use of resources and therefore facilitating achievement of intervention goals in a cost-effective manner while fostering sustainability. However, this can be possible if the community is engaged at all stages of the intervention, from designing, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of results. This study aimed at understanding community participation in the implementation of a biolarviciding intervention for malaria vectors control in Southern Tanzania. Methods The current study adopted explanatory mixed method study design in collecting data. Quantitative data were collected from 400 community members and 12 vector control coordinators using structured questionnaire while qualitative data was collected through key informant interviews to 32 participants and in-depth interviews to 5 vector control coordinators who were purposively selected from the 12 councils. Quantitative data analysis involved descriptive and inferential statistics. Thematic analysis was used to analyse qualitative data. Results Of 400 community members, only 90 (22.5%) participated in biolarviciding implementation. Predictors of community participation were willingness to participate (AOR = 3.15, 95%CI = 1.14 − 8.71, P value = 0.027) and community involvement (AOR = 6.07, 95%CI = 2.69 − 13.71, P value < 0.001). The study revealed that the main barriers to community participation were lack of effective involvement and lack of incentive to community volunteers while high willingness to participate was a facilitating factor for community participation. Conclusion The study revealed low community participation in biolarviciding implementation in Southern Tanzania with willingness to participate and community involvement being the main predictors for community participation while lack of incentive to community volunteers was one major barrier to community participation. This explains the persistence of an unresolved challenge of community participation in malaria interventions. Therefore, more efforts are needed to improve the participation of community members in Malaria interventions through advocacy, awareness creation of respective roles, and responsibilities of the community members and fostering community ownership. Additionally, councils need to design customized motivation package for the community members.
