Is an anarchist business organization possible? Textile firms in the industrial district of Alcoi during the Spanish Civil War (1936-39)

During the Spanish Civil War, in the Republican side, a social revolution broke out, led by the workers and their unions ending in many places in a business collectivization process. In the city of Alcoi, the anarchist union took control over more than 100 textile family firms, going through a rationalization process which unified the production of all textile firms overcoming a previous production crisis and attending the war demand. Does the Alcoi case during the Civil War prove the possibility of a successful anarchist business organization? This article tries to understand the development of business without a capitalist organization and the role of business networks in such a development. The organizational design and the administration of the collectivization process is an example of how socialization of the property and democratization of the decision-making process in the company were not opposed with rationality and efficiency, at least during a war context.

Why Has the Border Effect in the Japanese Machinery Sectors Declined?: The Role of Business Networks in East Asian Machinery Trade

This paper analyzes the impact of firm networks on Japan 's national border effect. We estimate gravity equations using data on Japan s international and interregional trade in four machinery industries (electrical, general, precision and transportation machinery). The machinery sector is the most important manufacturing sector for exports and outward foreign direct investment (FDI) in Japan. By taking into account international as well as interregional firm networks, we find that ownership relations usually enhance exports from parent firms to establishment. Consequently we can explain 15% (7%, 1% and 0.5%) of the decline in Japan 's border effect from 1980 to 1995 in precision (transportation, general electrical) machinery sector by the increase of international networks.

Resources and Activities Complementarities: the Role of Business Networks in the Provision of Integrated Rural Tourism

This paper focuses on the role of business networks, and especially on the ways in which formal and informal interactions among economic agents shape the tourist product. Local businesses are considered as agents who realize and/or create economic opportunities and develop new goals and strategies. Businesses are not viewed as independent entities, but as actors whose actions are embedded in structures of ongoing relations. As such, similar resources and activities based in rural tourism destinations do not necessarily have the same consequences at different times and places. Business networking is a crucial factor in organizing activities and resources at the local level, leading to spatially different levels of integration. Such differences are focused on here, using illustrative examples and findings from the case-study regions in the UK, Spain and Greece.

The Role of Business Networks in the Internationalization of Estonian Chemical Industry Enterprises

The awareness of business networks and skilled use of resources available through them make it possible to accelerate the process of internationalization and also increase the success from movement into a foreign market. The role of business networks in the internationalization of the firms is analyzed in this working paper on the example of Estonian small and medium-sized chemical industry enterprises. For studying the role of business networks in the internationalization of Estonian chemical industry enterprises seven Estonian chemical firms will be monitored using case study method. Research shows that business networks have an important role in the internationalization of Estonian small and medium-sized chemical firms. The main positive impact from a business network to a firm entering a foreign market is the provision of support and information about the target market. The negative impact comes from firms on a dominating position in a business network (mainly competitors and holding companies), who constrain firm's internationalization.

Organizing the Indonesian Clothing Industry in the Global Economy: The Role of Business Networks

In a relatively short period of time, Indonesia has become a significant centre of clothing production within the global economy. Its overall growth can be explained primarily by the intersection between two sets of political-economic processes: those operating at the global level of the industry in general and those specific to Indonesia itself. Within these general processes, we explore the particular organizational mechanisms through which this growth has occurred. Detailed field evidence shows how the Indonesian clothing industry is deeply embedded in production networks which connect domestic producers with international networks of production and distribution, notably those organized by Korean, Taiwanese, US, and European firms. Although such networks are generally consistent with Gereffi's concept of the buyer-driven global commodity chain, we show that the precise shape and the driver of the company-specific production networks in Indonesia are highly dependent on the specific market being served. Finally, brief attention is given to the potential impact of the current East Asian economic crisis on Indonesian clothing firms.
