The role of virtual reality in improving the quality of professional training of natural science teachers

The use of information technologies, in particular virtual reality (VR), is becoming a topical issue in the professional training of natural science teachers. The study aims to assess the effectiveness of a professional development program that utilizes virtual reality as an educational tool to enhance the quality of training for natural science teachers. The obtained results testify to the positive impact of the VR use on various aspects of teachers’ professional training. The study found that the attitude towards technology improved significantly after the VR introduction (from 65% to 72%). The percentage of positive responses regarding the feasibility of using STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) technologies in education increased by 25%. Student feedback emphasizes the importance of integrating new technologies into STEM education. Further research should examine the training needs of STEM teachers in different educational contexts, explore effective technology integration strategies, and assess their impact on student outcomes.

The role of virtual reality on physical and psychological health among older adults: A systematic review

To synthesis and appraise the existing research about the effect and outcomes of virtual reality (VR) interventions among older adults. A systematic review. This systematic review was conducted following the PRISMA guidelines and including multiple databases: Scopus, CINHAL, PubMed, Medline, and Web of Science, from 30 March 2014 to 30 March 2024. A total of 13 studies from 424 articles were included in the review. Seven studies were randomized control trial (RCT) and five studies were quasi-experimental study for feasibility trial with one for longitudinal study. The intervention group showed positive outcomes on physical activity and cognitive function (p<0.001) among older adults. This review concluded that the use of virtual reality intervention can promote cognitive function, physical health, mental health, well-being, and reduce the risk of falls among older people. VR technology plays the role to improved physical and psychological health among older adults. Future research can study the standardized VR intervention on health promotion for the effect and sustainability among older people.

Virtual Reality in Cancer Care: Enhancing Knowledge and Reducing Anxiety about Chemotherapy among Patients and Caregivers.

Virtual reality (VR) technology has evolved from entertainment to significant applications in healthcare and education. Despite its potential, there is limited research on the role of VR in cancer care. This study investigates VR's ability to simulate the chemotherapy process, aiming to enhance patients' knowledge and mitigate anxiety associated with chemotherapy. Utilizing a two-arm, mixed-methods pre/post-survey design, the study measured changes in patients' anxiety and knowledge before and after exposure to a VR simulation. Participants (n = 267) engaged with VR simulations or interactive 360-degree videos depicting the chemotherapy process. Data analyses revealed a significant median increase in chemotherapy knowledge post-exposure to the VR content (z = 12.511, p < 0.001). Demographic factSors significantly influenced perceptions of VR realism and usefulness (p < 0.05). Additionally, VR exposure was correlated with reduced anxiety levels and improved treatment expectations (p < 0.05). Participants with higher post-understanding chemotherapy scores considered VR a useful tool for managing anxiety about chemotherapy and recommended VR for other medical procedures (p < 0.001). These findings underscore VR technology's potential as a valuable tool in cancer treatment, suggesting it can enhance patient education and reduce anxiety, thereby improving patient outcomes during cancer therapy.

ABSTRACT This research investigates the impact of Virtual Reality (VR) as a tourism marketing tool on forming virtual destination image and behavioral intentions among potential outbound Iranian tourists. With limited empirical studies on this topic, the study bridges the research gap by exploring the role of VR in shaping tourists’ perceptions and intentions. The applied quantitative research involves 302 participants, and the data is analyzed using the structural equation method in Smart PLS Software. The findings reveal that the sense of presence in the VR environment directly influences virtual cognitive and affective images, which affect the overall virtual image and subsequently behavioral intentions. This study provides valuable insights for marketers and destination managers to utilize VR for enhanced tourism marketing strategies.

Inclusion criteria were limited to studies that used virtual reality as a tool within the classroom, analyzing the competencies developed through its application.ResultsOut of the 1,671 articles retrieved, 61 full texts were selected for review, resulting in 27 academic articles published in the last five years. In-Game Advertising: Role of Virtual Reality and Persuasion Knowledge

ABSTRACT This experimental research examines the effect of brand placement (prominent or subtle) and use of technology (2D or head-mounted-display (HMD) VR) in in-game advertising (IGA) on brand recall and how persuasion knowledge moderates this relationship. Results showed that for a prominent brand placement, a 2D game resulted in higher brand recall than an HMD VR game. Players with high persuasion knowledge, showed superior recall for the embedded brands in two game conditions: a prominent placed 2D game and a prominent placed HMDVR game. However, insignificant results were found for a subtle brand placement-2D game and a subtle placement-HMD VR game irrespective of whether the player has high or low persuasion knowledge. Further the study provides strong theoretical and managerial implications and avenues for future research in the gamified-advertising context.

The Role of Virtual Reality in Enhancing Motor Skills in Children: A Systematic Review

This research aims to analyze how virtual reality (VR) can enhance movement skills in children. We employed a systematic review model, searching for relevant articles in databases such as PubMed, Web of Science, and ScienceDirect. The search keywords included "virtual reality," "child," "social," and "motor skills." This study's inclusion criteria were articles focused on "virtual reality," "children with motor disorders," and "motor skills," published within the last five years (as of 2019). Articles from less well-known journals were excluded. We identified eight articles that met the inclusion criteria and were suitable for systematic review according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) standards. The findings indicate that VR plays a significant role in improving motor coordination abilities in children. Responses to VR interventions were overwhelmingly positive, showing reductions in physical, cognitive, and emotional stress. Therefore, VR proves to be a valuable tool for physiotherapists and physicians treating children with motor delays. However, some considerations need to be addressed. A structured search strategy was employed to identify relevant studies from major academic databases, focusing on peer-reviewed articles, conference papers, and dissertations published from 2000 onwards .The results indicate that VR significantly enhances student engagement and immersion, with many students reporting increased motivation and interest in the subject matter. This positive impact on student engagement is a promising sign for educators. Studies also show that VR improves learning outcomes, particularly in subjects requiring spatial and conceptual understanding, with test scores increasing by an average of 15-30% after VR integration. However, the review highlights substantial challenges related to the accessibility and inclusivity of VR technology. The high cost of VR hardware and software and the need for robust infrastructure limit its widespread adoption, particularly in underfunded schools. Additionally, the digital divide poses a barrier to equitable access, and further efforts are needed to make VR accessible to students with disabilities. Comprehensive teacher training is emphasized as a critical factor in the successful integration of VR into the curriculum. Teachers who received extensive training reported higher confidence and competence in using VR, leading to better student outcomes. The study concludes that while VR has significant potential to transform educational experiences, addressing accessibility, inclusivity, and teacher training challenges is essential for maximizing its benefits. Injuries represent a serious concern for football players, with a significant loss in terms of sport participation and long periods of rehabilitation. According to the 2019/20 UEFA Élite Club Injury Report, the average incidence of injuries during training is 2.8 per 1000 h of training, with an average absence from training of 20 days. In addition, injured athletes are 4 to 7 times more likely to relapse than uninjured athletes. High workloads and reduced recovery periods represent two of the most important modifiable risk factors. In this context, prevention and an adequate rehabilitation protocol are vital in managing injuries, reducing their incidence, and improving the return to competition. In recent years, technological development has provided new tools in rehabilitation, and Virtual reality (VR) has shown interesting results in treating neurologic and orthopedic pathologies. Virtual Reality (VR) technology finds application in the sports industry as a tool to examine athletes’ technical movements. The primary objective is to detect the biomechanical risk factors associated with anterior cruciate ligament injury. Additionally, VR can be used to train athletes in field-specific techniques and create safe and controlled therapeutic environments for post-injury recovery. Moreover, VR offers a customizable approach to treatment based on individual player data. It can be employed for both prevention and rehabilitation, tailoring the rehabilitation and training protocols according to the athletes’ specific needs.

Stand in surgeon's shoes: virtual reality cross-training to enhance teamwork in surgery.

Teamwork in surgery depends on a shared mental model of success, i.e., a common understanding of objectives in the operating room. A shared model leads to increased engagement among team members and is associated with fewer complications and overall better outcomes for patients. However, clinical training typically focuses on role-specific skills, leaving individuals to acquire a shared model indirectly through on-the-job experience. We investigate whether virtual reality (VR) cross-training, i.elet@tokeneonedotexposure to other roles, can enhance a shared mental model for non-surgeons more directly. Our study focuses on X-ray guided pelvic trauma surgery, a procedure where successful communication depends on the shared model between the surgeon and a C-arm technologist. We present a VR environment supporting both roles and evaluate a cross-training curriculum in which non-surgeons swap roles with the surgeon. Exposure to the surgical task resulted in higher engagement with the C-arm technologist role in VR, as measured by the mental demand and effort expended by participants ( ). It also has a significant effect on non-surgeon's mental model of the overall task; novice participants' estimation of the mental demand and effort required for the surgeon's task increases after training, while their perception of overall performance decreases ( ), indicating a gap in understanding based solely on observation. This phenomenon was also present for a professional C-arm technologist. Until now, VR applications for clinical training have focused on virtualizing existing curricula. We demonstrate how novel approaches which are not possible outside of a virtual environment, such as role swapping, may enhance the shared mental model of surgical teams by contextualizing each individual's role within the overall task in a time- and cost-efficient manner. As workflows grow increasingly sophisticated, we see VR curricula as being able to directly foster a shared model for success, ultimately benefiting patient outcomes through more effective teamwork in surgery.

Introduction Anxiety disorder affects nearly 9.4% of children aged 3-17 years.1 Virtual Reality (VR) provides an alternative for managing anxiety due to immersive, multisensory, and excellent distraction.ObjectivesThe aim is to evaluate the efficacy of VR therapy in managing anxiety in children.Methods We searched PubMed, Medline, Embase, Web of Science, and Biosisdatabases with the keywords “Virtual Reality” in the context of “AnxietyDisorders” and included 8 relevant studies published in English until February 10, 2023, for our qualitative synthesis.ResultsThe VR-Guided relaxation (VR-GR) effectively decreased anxiety immediately after administration. In another trial, 4 of the 9 patients completely overcame their fears, and 8 of 9 saw an improvement in target behaviors in the autism population even after six weeks after the therapy, and the effect lasted 1 year post-treatment. In another study, VR-based therapy helped reduce anxiety and behavioral scores significantly in the VR group vs. the control. In another study, they found during pediatric intravenous catheter placement, patients who received VR therapy showed significantly less anxiety and pain compared to those who did not. In another study, they found VR therapy helped reduce anxiety during the induction of pre-operative anesthesia in children undergoing elective surgery.Conclusions A study discovered benefits with statistically significant results in reducing anxiety in children immediately after VR-based therapy.
