Efficient Computation of the Quantum Rate-Distortion Function

The quantum rate-distortion function plays a fundamental role in quantum information theory, however there is currently no practical algorithm which can efficiently compute this function to high accuracy for moderate channel dimensions. In this paper, we show how symmetry reduction can significantly simplify common instances of the entanglement-assisted quantum rate-distortion problems. This allows us to better understand the properties of the quantum channels which obtain the optimal rate-distortion trade-off, while also allowing for more efficient computation of the quantum rate-distortion function regardless of the numerical algorithm being used. Additionally, we propose an inexact variant of the mirror descent algorithm to compute the quantum rate-distortion function with provable sublinear convergence rates. We show how this mirror descent algorithm is related to Blahut-Arimoto and expectation-maximization methods previously used to solve similar problems in information theory. Using these techniques, we present the first numerical experiments to compute a multi-qubit quantum rate-distortion function, and show that our proposed algorithm solves faster and to higher accuracy when compared to existing methods.

The subadditivity of quantum entropy in Gaussian quantum systems

The entropy of a quantum state measures information or uncertainty contained in the quantum system and plays a crucial role in quantum information theory. Many entropic properties, such as the subadditivity, have been studied for the discrete system with a finite-dimensional state space, while much less is explored in the infinite-dimensional system. In this work, we study the entropic properties of the continuous system that models a collection of Gaussian modes or fields. In particular, we identify the parameter range for the Rényi, Tsallis, and Unified entropies of Gaussian states that they are additive, subadditive, and strong subadditive. We show that the Rényi entropies are subadditive, further giving rise to the subadditivity of the Tsallis and Unified entropies in certain parameter range. We also find that the Tsallis and Unified entropies are not strong subadditive, while the Rényi entropies with the order ranging from 1 to 2 are conjectured to admit the strong subadditivity. Our results are useful in studying quantum correlations and channel capacities in Gaussian systems.

On the Pauli group on 2-qubits in dynamical systems with pseudofermions

Abstract The group of matrices P 1 {P_{1}} of Pauli is a finite 2-group of order 16 and plays a fundamental role in quantum information theory, since it is related to the quantum information on the 1-qubit. Here we show that both P 1 {P_{1}} and the Pauli 2-group P 2 {P_{2}} of order 64 on 2-qubits, other than in quantum computing, can also appear in dynamical systems which are described by non-self-adjoint Hamiltonians. This will allow us to represent P 1 {P_{1}} and P 2 {P_{2}} in terms of pseudofermionic operators.

Parameterized multi-observable sum uncertainty relations

The uncertainty principle is one of the fundamental features of quantum mechanics and plays an essential role in quantum information theory. We study uncertainty relations based on variance for arbitrary finite N quantum observables. We establish a series of parameterized uncertainty relations in terms of the parameterized norm inequalities, which improve the exiting variance-based uncertainty relations. The lower bounds of our uncertainty inequalities are non-zero unless the measured state is a common eigenvector of all the observables. Detailed examples are provided to illustrate the tightness of our uncertainty relations.

A new entropic quantum correlation measure for adversarial systems

Quantum correlation often refers to correlations exhibited by two or more local subsystems under a suitable measurement. These correlations are beyond the framework of classical statistics and the associated classical probability distribution. Quantum entanglement is the most well-known of such correlations and plays an important role in quantum information theory. However, there exist non-entangled states that still possess quantum correlations which cannot be described by classical statistics. One such measure that captures these non-classical correlations is discord. Here we introduce a new measure of quantum correlations which we call entropic accord that fits between entanglement and discord. It is defined as the optimised minimax mutual information of the outcome of the projective measurements between two parties. We show a strict hierarchy exists between entanglement, entropic accord and discord for two-qubit states. We study two-qubit states which shows the relationship between the three entropic quantities. In addition to revealing a class of correlations that are distinct from discord and entanglement, the entropic accord measure can be inherently more intuitive in certain contexts.

Asymptotic Survival of Genuine Multipartite Entanglement in Noisy Quantum Networks Depends on the Topology

The study of entanglement in multipartite quantum states plays a major role in quantum information theory and genuine multipartite entanglement signals one of its strongest forms for applications. However, its characterization for general (mixed) states is a highly nontrivial problem. We introduce a particularly simple subclass of multipartite states, which we term pair-entangled network (PEN) states, as those that can be created by distributing exclusively bipartite entanglement in a connected network. We show that genuine multipartite entanglement in a PEN state depends on both the level of noise and the network topology and, in sharp contrast to the case of pure states, it is not guaranteed by the mere distribution of mixed bipartite entangled states. Our main result is a markedly drastic feature of this phenomenon: the amount of connectivity in the network determines whether genuine multipartite entanglement is robust to noise for any system size or whether it is completely washed out under the slightest form of noise for a sufficiently large number of parties. This latter case implies fundamental limitations for the application of certain networks in realistic scenarios, where the presence of some form of noise is unavoidable. To illustrate the applicability of PEN states to study the complex phenomenology behind multipartite entanglement, we also use them to prove superactivation of genuine multipartite nonlocality for any number of parties.

Quantum postselective measurements: Sufficient condition for overcoming the Holevo bound and the role of max-relative entropy

The operation of unambiguous state discrimination (USD) plays an important role in quantum information theory. Here, we study the generalization for this operation which can be applied where USD is not available, including the case of completely coinciding supports. We demonstrate the effect of overcoming the Holevo bound after postselective measurements, which works for a class of ensembles, including two arbitrary noncommuting quantum states. We also discuss the role of max-relative entropy in postselective measurements and give an alternative operational interpretation for this function.

Sub-quantum Fisher information

The quantum Fisher information (QFI) plays a crucial role in quantum information theory and in many practical applications such as quantum metrology. However, computing the QFI is generally a computationally demanding task. In this work we analyze a lower bound on the QFI which we call the sub-quantum Fisher information (sub-QFI). The bound can be efficiently estimated on a quantum computer for an n-qubit state using 2n qubits. The sub-QFI is based on the super-fidelity, an upper bound on Uhlmann’s fidelity. We analyze the sub-QFI in the context of unitary families, where we derive several crucial properties including its geometrical interpretation. In particular, we prove that the QFI and the sub-QFI are maximized for the same optimal state, which implies that the sub-QFI is faithful to the QFI in the sense that both quantities share the same global extrema. Based on this faithfulness, the sub-QFI acts as an efficiently computable surrogate for the QFI for quantum sensing and quantum metrology applications. Finally, we provide additional meaning to the sub-QFI as a measure of coherence, asymmetry, and purity loss.

Certification of three black boxes with unsharp measurements using 3 → 1 sequential quantum random access codes

Unsharp measurements play an increasingly important role in quantum information theory. In this paper, we study a three-party prepare-transform-measure experiment with unsharp measurements based on 3 → 1 sequential random access codes (RACs). We derive optimal trade-off between the two correlation witnesses in 3 → 1 sequential quantum random access codes (QRACs), and use the result to complete the self-testing of quantum preparations, instruments and measurements for three sequential parties. We also give the upper and lower bounds of the sharpness parameter to complete the robustness analysis of the self-testing scheme. In addition, we find that classical correlation witness violation based on 3 → 1 sequential RACs cannot be obtained by both correlation witnesses simultaneously. This means that if the second party uses strong unsharp measurements to overcome the classical upper bound, the third party cannot do so even with sharp measurements. Finally, we give the analysis and comparison of the random number generation efficiency under different sharpness parameters based on the determinant value, 2 → 1 and 3 → 1 QRACs separately. This letter sheds new light on generating random numbers among multi-party in semi-device independent framework.

Generation of Bures-Hall mixed states using coupled kicked tops

We simulate a system of coupled kicked tops to generate random density matrices distributed according to the Bures-Hall measure, which has an important role in quantum information theory. We study the effects of stochasticity and coupling parameters of the coupled-kicked-top system on the behavior of the associated bipartite pure state, eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the reduced state, and average entropies. For strongly chaotic phase space and adequate coupling between the constituting tops (subsystems), we find that the results of simulation agree with analytical results of random matrix theory. We also examine local fluctuation properties of the Bures-Hall eigenvalues using the distribution of nearest-neighbor spacing ratios. In the limit of high-dimensional density matrices, the empirical ratio distribution is found to approach the Wigner-surmise-like result for the Gaussian unitary ensemble. Additionally, we present some closed-form results for the Bures-Hall spectral density and corresponding moments using Meijer $G$ functions.

Quantifier elimination theory and maps which preserve semipositivity

We give an algorithm determining whether a hermiticity-preserving superoperator is positive. In our approach we apply techniques of quantifier elimination theory for real numbers. Furthermore, we argue that quantifier elimination theory should play more significant role in quantum information theory and other areas as well.

Coherence dynamics induced by attenuation and amplification Gaussian channels

Quantum Gaussian channels play a key role in quantum information theory. In particular, the attenuation and amplification channels are useful to describe noise and decoherence effects on continuous variables systems. They are directly associated to the beam splitter and two-mode squeezing operations, which have operational relevance in quantum protocols with bosonic models. An important property of these channels is that they are Gaussian completely positive maps and the action on a general input state depends on the parameters characterizing the channels. In this work, we study the coherence dynamics introduced by these channels on input Gaussian states. We derive explicit expressions for the coherence depending on the parameters describing the channels. By assuming a displaced thermal state with initial coherence as input state, for the attenuation case it is observed a revival of the coherence as a function of the transmissivity coefficient, whereas for the amplification channel the coherence reaches asymptotic values depending on the gain coefficient. Further, we obtain the entropy production for these class of operations, showing that it can be reduced by controlling the parameters involved. We write a simple expression for computing the entropy production due to the coherence for both channels. This can be useful to simulate many processes in quantum thermodynamics, as finite-time driving on bosonic modes.

Wigner function, Wigner-Yanase skew information, and parity asymmetry

The Wigner function, a position-momentum joint distribution introduced by Wigner in 1932 as a quantum correction for thermodynamics, plays a fundamental role in the phase-space formulation of quantum mechanics. The Wigner-Yanase skew information, an information-theoretic concept introduced by Wigner and Yanase in 1963 for quantifying information contents of quantum states, remains almost unnoticed until 2000s and is now playing an increasingly important role in quantum information theory. Apart from the appearance of the name Wigner, the relations between these two important concepts seem to have attracted little attention. In this work, by exploiting symmetry and asymmetry of bosonic field states with respect to the parity, we quantify parity asymmetry in term of the Wigner-Yanase skew information, and reveal some intrinsic complementary relations between the Wigner function and the Wigner-Yanase skew information. The results can be extended to a rather general setup.

On maps which preserve semipositivity and quantifier elimination theory for real numbers

Assume that [Formula: see text] is a superoperator which preserves hermiticity. We give an algorithm determining whether [Formula: see text] preserves semipositivity (we call [Formula: see text] positive in this case). Our approach to the problem has a model-theoretic nature, namely, we apply techniques of quantifier elimination theory for real numbers. An approach based on these techniques seems to be the only one that allows to decide whether an arbitrary hermiticity-preserving [Formula: see text] is positive. Before we go to detailed analysis of the problem, we argue that quantifier elimination for real numbers (and also for complex numbers) can play a significant role in quantum information theory and other areas as well.

Local quantum Fisher information and local quantum uncertainty in two-qubit Heisenberg XYZ chain with Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interactions

Quantum correlations play an important role in quantum information theory. Quantum Fisher information (QFI) via local observables and via local measurements (i.e. local QFI (LQFI)) is a fundamental concept in quantum estimation and quantum metrology. LQFI captures the quantumness of correlations in a multicomponent quantum system. This new discord-like measure is very similar to the quantum correlations measure called local quantum uncertainty (LQU). In this work we will study the LQFI and the LQU in the two-qubit Heisenberg XYZ spin chain model with Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya (DM) interaction in the z-direction. Here we show that the DM interaction and spin interactions along the x- and z-axes can increase and maintain LQFI and LQU. It is also shown that because of thermal fluctuations LQFI and LQU are decreased by increasing temperature. They are equal to one at very low temperature and start to decay only after a thereshold temperature.

Information-based approach towards a unified resource theory

Resource theories play an important role in quantum information theory, as they identify resourceful states and channels that are potentially useful for the accomplishment of tasks that would be otherwise unreachable. The elementary structure of such theories, which is based on the definition of free states and free operations, successfully accommodates different nonclassical aspects, such as quantum coherence and entanglement, but it is still not clear whether and how far such formal framework can be extended. In this work, by taking information as the most primitive quantum resource and defining resource-destroying operations, we develop a unifying approach that proves able to encompass several nonclassical aspects, including the newly developed concepts of quantum irreality and realism-based nonlocality.

Entropy Production in Quantum is Different

Currently, ‘time’ does not play any essential role in quantum information theory. In this sense, quantum information theory is underdeveloped similarly to how quantum physics was underdeveloped before Erwin Schrödinger introduced his famous equation for the evolution of a quantum wave function. In this review article, we cope with the problem of time for one of the central quantities in quantum information theory: entropy. Recently, a replica trick formalism, the so-called ‘multiple parallel world’ formalism, has been proposed that revolutionizes entropy evaluation for quantum systems. This formalism is one of the first attempts to introduce ‘time’ in quantum information theory. With the total entropy being conserved in a closed system, entropy can flow internally between subsystems; however, we show that this flow is not limited only to physical correlations as the literature suggest. The nonlinear dependence of entropy on the density matrix introduces new types of correlations with no analogue in physical quantities. Evolving a number of replicas simultaneously makes it possible for them to exchange particles between different replicas. We will summarize some of the recent news about entropy in some example quantum devices. Moreover, we take a quick look at a new correspondence that was recently proposed that provides an interesting link between quantum information theory and quantum physics. The mere existence of such a correspondence allows for exploring new physical phenomena as the result of controlling entanglement in a quantum device.

Amending Coherence-Breaking Channels via Unitary Operations

The coherence-breaking channels play a significant role in quantum information theory. We study the coherence-breaking channels and give a method to amend the coherence-breaking channels by applying unitary operations. For given incoherent channel $\Phi$, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for the channel to be a coherence-breaking channel and amend it via unitary operations. For qubit incoherent channels $\Phi$ that are not coherence-breaking ones, we consider the mapping $\Phi\circ\Phi$ and present the conditions for coherence-breaking and channel amendment as well.

Rényi relative entropies of quantum Gaussian states

The quantum Rényi relative entropies play a prominent role in quantum information theory, finding applications in characterizing error exponents and strong converse exponents for quantum hypothesis testing and quantum communication theory. On a different thread, quantum Gaussian states have been intensely investigated theoretically, motivated by the fact that they are more readily accessible in the laboratory than are other, more exotic quantum states. In this paper, we derive formulas for the quantum Rényi relative entropies of quantum Gaussian states. We consider both the traditional (Petz) Rényi relative entropy as well as the more recent sandwiched Rényi relative entropy, finding formulas that are expressed solely in terms of the mean vectors and covariance matrices of the underlying quantum Gaussian states. Our development handles the hitherto elusive case for the Petz–Rényi relative entropy when the Rényi parameter is larger than one. Finally, we also derive a formula for the max-relative entropy of two quantum Gaussian states, and we discuss some applications of the formulas derived here.

Sharp continuity bounds for entropy and conditional entropy

The Renyi entropy plays an essential role in quantum information theory. We study the continuity estimation of the Renyi entropy. An inequality relating the Renyi entropy difference of two quantum states to their trace norm distance is derived. This inequality is shown to be tight in the sense that equality can be attained for every prescribed value of the trace norm distance. It includes the sharp Fannes inequality for von Neumann entropy as a special case.
