Amphibian larvae inhabiting temporary ponds often exhibit the capacity to accelerate development and undergo metamorphosis in challenging conditions like desiccation. However, not all species exhibit this ability, the yellow-bellied toad (Bombina variegata) is one such example. The underlying mechanisms behind the inability to accelerate development under desiccation remain largely unexplored. The hypothalamic-pituitary-interrenal (HPI) axis and corticosterone (CORT), which act synergistically with thyroid hormone, are thought to facilitate metamorphosis in response to desiccation stress. In this study, we aimed to investigate whether modification in the HPI axis, particularly CORT levels, contributes to the absence of adaptive plasticity in B. variegata under desiccation stress. The study design included four treatments: high water level, high water level with exogenous CORT, low water level, and low water level with metyrapone (a CORT synthesis inhibitor). The main objective was to evaluate the effects of these treatments on whole-body corticosterone levels, life history, morphological traits, and oxidative stress parameters during the prometamorphic and metamorphic climax developmental stages. While low water level had no effect on total corticosterone levels, larval period, body condition index, and metamorphic body shape, it negatively affected metamorph size, mass, and growth rate. Our findings suggest that constant exposure to desiccation stress over generations may have led to modifications in the HPI axis activity in B. variegata, resulting in adaptation to changes in water level, evident through the absence of stress response. Consequently, CORT may not be a relevant stress indicator in desiccation conditions for this species.

The plasticity of immune memory in invertebrates.

Whether specific immune protection after initial pathogen exposure (immune memory) occurs in invertebrates has long been uncertain. The absence of antibodies, B-cells and T-cells, and the short lifespans of invertebrates led to the hypothesis that immune memory does not occur in these organisms. However, research in the past two decades has supported the existence of immune memory in several invertebrate groups, including Ctenophora, Cnidaria, Nematoda, Mollusca and Arthropoda. Interestingly, some studies have demonstrated immune memory that is specific to the parasite strain. Nonetheless, other work does not provide support for immune memory in invertebrates or offers only partial support. Moreover, the expected biphasic immune response, a characteristic of adaptive immune memory in vertebrates, varies within and between invertebrate species. This variation may be attributed to the influence of biotic or abiotic factors, particularly parasites, on the outcome of immune memory. Despite its critical importance for survival, the role of phenotypic plasticity in immune memory has not been systematically examined in the past two decades. Additionally, the features of immune responses occurring in diverse environments have yet to be fully characterized.

Modeling stress-induced responses: plasticity in continuous state space and gradual clonal evolution.

Mathematical models of cancer and bacterial evolution have generally stemmed from a gene-centric framework, assuming clonal evolution via acquisition of resistance-conferring mutations and selection of their corresponding subpopulations. More recently, the role of phenotypic plasticity has been recognized and models accounting for phenotypic switching between discrete cell states (e.g., epithelial and mesenchymal) have been developed. However, seldom do models incorporate both plasticity and mutationally driven resistance, particularly when the state space is continuous and resistance evolves in a continuous fashion. In this paper, we develop a framework to model plastic and mutational mechanisms of acquiring resistance in a continuous gradual fashion. We use this framework to examine ways in which cancer and bacterial populations can respond to stress and consider implications for therapeutic strategies. Although we primarily discuss our framework in the context of cancer and bacteria, it applies broadly to any system capable of evolving via plasticity and genetic evolution.

Phenotypically plastic responses to freshwater salinization in larval amphibians: Induced tolerance and induced sensitivity

Contamination of aquatic ecosystems is pervasive around the world and there has been a growing interest in understanding the ecological and evolutionary impacts. For contaminants such as pesticides, researchers are discovering widespread evolution of increased tolerance in target and non-target species and the role of phenotypic plasticity in facilitating this evolution. In contrast, we know much less about the evolution of tolerance in response to the increasing problem of freshwater salinization. In amphibians, recent studies have discovered that some populations from ponds with high salt pollution (from deicing road salts) have evolved higher tolerance. In this study, we examined whether populations of wood frog tadpoles (Rana sylvatica) possess rapid, inducible tolerance to salinity in a manner similar to their inducible tolerance to pesticides. Using newly hatched tadpoles from nine populations, we discovered that eight of the populations were able to alter their tolerance to salt. However, seven of the eight inducible populations experienced a higher sensitivity to salt while the eighth population experienced a higher tolerance to salt. Such inducible responses likely reflect the interplay of salt dynamics in the ponds, combined with the available genetic variation and selection intensity of each pond. This appears to be the first example of inducible salt tolerance in any animal and future studies should examine the generality of the response and how it may affect the evolution of tolerance to the global issue of freshwater salinization.

The role of phenotypic plasticity in shaping ecological networks.

Plasticity-mediated changes in interaction dynamics and structure may scale up and affect the ecological network in which the plastic species are embedded. Despite their potential relevance for understanding the effects of plasticity on ecological communities, these effects have seldom been analysed. We argue here that, by boosting the magnitude of intra-individual phenotypic variation, plasticity may have three possible direct effects on the interactions that the plastic species maintains with other species in the community: may expand the interaction niche, may cause a shift from one interaction niche to another or may even cause the colonization of a new niche. The combined action of these three factors can scale to the community level and eventually expresses itself as a modification in the topology and functionality of the entire ecological network. We propose that this causal pathway can be more widespread than previously thought and may explain how interaction niches evolve quickly in response to rapid changes in environmental conditions. The implication of this idea is not solely eco-evolutionary but may also help to understand how ecological interactions rewire and evolve in response to global change.

The effect of hypoxia on Daphnia magna performance and its associated microbial and bacterioplankton community: A scope for phenotypic plasticity and microbiome community interactions upon environmental stress?

The depletion of oxygen as a result of increased stratification and decreased oxygen solubility is one of the most significant chemical changes occurring in aquatic ecosystems as a result of global environmental change. Hence, more aquatic organisms will be exposed to hypoxic conditions over time. Deciphering the effects of hypoxia on strong ecological interactors in this ecosystem’s food web is critical for predicting how aquatic communities can respond to such an environmental disturbance. Here (sub-)lethal effects of hypoxia and whether these are genotype specific in Daphnia, a keystone species of freshwater ecosystems, are studied. This is especially relevant upon studying genetic responses with respect to phenotypic switches upon environmental stress. Further, we investigated the effect of hypoxia on the Daphnia microbial community to test if the microbiome plays a role in the phenotypic switch and tolerance to hypoxia. For this, two Daphnia genotypes were exposed for two weeks to either hypoxia or normoxia and host performance was monitored together with changes in the host associated and free-living microbial community after this period. We detected phenotypic plasticity for some of the tested Daphnia performance traits. The microbial community of the bacterioplankton and Daphnia associated microbial community responded via changes in species richness and community composition and structure. The latter response was different for the two genotypes suggesting that the microbiome plays an important role in phenotypic plasticity with respect to hypoxia tolerance in Daphnia, but further testing (e.g., through microbiome transplants) is needed to confirm this.

Abstract 1292: CX3CR1 surface expression and phenotypic plasticity in metastasis-initiating cells

Abstract Metastasis-initiating cells (MICs) display stem cell-like features and cause metastatic recurrences leading to patients' demise. We found that prostate and breast cancer cells with high surface expression of the chemokine receptor CX3CR1 (CX3CR1high) account for ~5-7% of the whole population and are endowed with metastasis-initiating ability and exhibits stemness features, including expression of pluripotency genes Nanog and Oct4a. Notably, impairing CX3CR1 signaling hinders metastatic initiation and progression in mouse models of human disease. We also found that cancer cells lacking surface CX3CR1 expression (CX3CR1low) can re-acquire CX3CR1-associated features over time by undergoing phenotypic plasticity. Accordingly, when grafted as pure CX3CR1low populations these cells could generate disseminated tumors in mice, implying that MICs can emerge from cancer cells lacking stemness features. In vitro studies by flow cytometry show that cell surface re-exposure of CX3CR1 by CX3CR1low cells begins within 2 days post-sorting, with the whole population reaching phenotypic equilibrium at 12-16 days post-sorting. Further mechanistic studies revealed that both CX3CR1 protein trafficking and transcriptional regulation play a role in phenotypic plasticity. Additionally, disseminated tumors in mice harbor higher percentages of CX3CR1high cells than in vitro cultures, suggesting that the tissue microenvironment of target organs promotes phenotypic plasticity. These findings nominate CX3CR1 as a novel marker of MICs and provide conceptual ground for future development of approaches targeting CX3CR1 signaling and (re)expression as therapeutic means to prevent or contain metastasis initiation and progression. Diversity and mean specific leaf area of Mediterranean woody vegetation changes in response to summer drought across a double stress gradient: The role of phenotypic plasticity

AbstractAimMany aspects of vegetation response to increased drought remain uncertain but it is expected that phenotypic plasticity may be key to early adaptation of plants to environmental stress. In this work we observe the response of specific leaf area (SLA) of woody shrub vegetation to the summer drought typical of the Mediterranean climate. In addition, to observe the possible interaction between the impact of drought and the environmental characteristics of the ecosystems, communities from different edaphic and structural contexts distributed along the double stress gradient of the Mediterranean mountains (high temperature and low precipitation at low elevation; low temperature and high irradiation at high elevation) have been analysed.LocationCentral Mountain range of the Iberian Peninsula.MethodsAlong the entire altitudinal gradient, 33 shrub communities belonging to different habitat typologies (shrublands, rocky areas, hedgerows, understorey) were sampled before and after the passage of summer, both in 2017 and 2019. A total of 1724 individuals and 15,516 leaves were collected and measured to estimate the mean values and diversity of SLA of each community.ResultsThe community‐weighted mean and functional divergence have inverse quadratic relationships with the environmental gradient. Shrub communities at both ends of the gradient have low mean SLA values and high functional divergence of this trait. Summer drought implies a generalised decrease in the mean SLA of the communities throughout the gradient, as well as an alteration in functional richness and uniformity. However, the effect of summer drought on the plant community is mediated by the microenvironmental characteristics of its habitat.ConclusionsDrought acclimatisation of shrub communities through phenotypic plasticity leads to rapid changes in their functional leaf structure. In the long term, our results point to an increase in plant conservative strategies, reduced ecosystem productivity, slower nutrient recycling and the reduction of communities of specific habitats as drought increases.

The Influence of Season on Phenotypic Plasticity Symptoms in Hibiscus rosa-sinensis Crested Peach Flowers

The variation of Hibiscus rosa-sinensis flower in the form of a crested peach is thought to show phenotypic plasticity symptoms in nature. Phenotypic plasticity is a condition in which genotypes give rise to different phenotypes in different environments. The aim of this study was to determine the plasticity response of H. rosa-sinensis crested peach flowers to seasonal changes, both morphologically and anatomically. Flower samples were taken from the residential area of Bojong Gede, Bogor, in two different seasons: the dry season in 2018 and the rainy season in 2021. Morphological observations were made by calculating the number and size of each flower section using measuring instruments and a Dino-Lite microscope. Anatomical observations were made by observing the internal structure of the ovaries using a 4× magnification light microscope. Measurement of environmental parameters, such as temperature, humidity, and light intensity, was also carried out in this study to determine the symptoms of phenotypic plasticity. The phenotypic plasticity responses of H. rosa-sinensis crested peach flower are clearly observed in the number and composition of the stamen, staminodium petaloid, intermediate stamen-petal, and external-internal structure of the ovary. H. rosa-sinensis, in the form of crested flowers, showed a different phenotypic plasticity response in different seasons. The light intensity and temperature factors play an important role in phenotypic plasticity. Research with various observation times is still needed to determine the range of phenotypic plasticity responses of the H. rosa-sinensis flower form of crested peach in nature.

Population Epigenetics: The Extent of DNA Methylation Variation in Wild Animal Populations.

Population epigenetics explores the extent of epigenetic variation and its dynamics in natural populations encountering changing environmental conditions. In contrast to population genetics, the basic concepts of this field are still in their early stages, especially in animal populations. Epigenetic variation may play a crucial role in phenotypic plasticity and local adaptation as it can be affected by the environment, it is likely to have higher spontaneous mutation rate than nucleotide sequences do, and it may be inherited via non-mendelian processes. In this review, we aim to bring together natural animal population epigenetic studies to generate new insights into ecological epigenetics and its evolutionary implications. We first provide an overview of the extent of DNA methylation variation and its autonomy from genetic variation in wild animal population. Second, we discuss DNA methylation dynamics which create observed epigenetic population structures by including basic population genetics processes. Then, we highlight the relevance of DNA methylation variation as an evolutionary mechanism in the extended evolutionary synthesis. Finally, we suggest new research directions by highlighting gaps in the knowledge of the population epigenetics field. As for our results, DNA methylation diversity was found to reveal parameters that can be used to characterize natural animal populations. Some concepts of population genetics dynamics can be applied to explain the observed epigenetic structure in natural animal populations. The set of recent advancements in ecological epigenetics, especially in transgenerational epigenetic inheritance in wild animal population, might reshape the way ecologists generate predictive models of the capacity of organisms to adapt to changing environments.

Relaxed risk of predation drives parallel evolution of stickleback behavior.

The occurrence of similar phenotypes in multiple independent populations derived from common ancestral conditions (viz. parallel evolution) is a testimony of evolution by natural selection. Parallel evolution implies that populations share a common phenotypic response to a common selection pressure associated with habitat similarity. Examples of parallel evolution at genetic and phenotypic levels are fairly common, but the driving selective agents often remain elusive. Similarly, the role of phenotypic plasticity in facilitating early stages of parallel evolution is unclear. We investigated whether the relaxation of predation pressure associated with the colonization of freshwater ponds by nine-spined sticklebacks (Pungitius pungitius) likely explains the divergence in complex behaviors between marine and pond populations, and whether this divergence is parallel. Using laboratory-raised individuals exposed to different levels of perceived predation risk, we calculated vectors of phenotypic divergence for four behavioral traits between habitats and predation risk treatments. We found a significant correlation between the directions of evolutionary divergence and phenotypic plasticity, suggesting that divergence in behavior between habitats is aligned with the response to relaxation of predation pressure. Finally, we show alignment across multiple pairs of populations, and that relaxation of predation pressure has likely driven parallel evolution of behavior in this species.

Maintaining laboratory cultures of cave-dwelling and surface-dwelling isopod crustaceans

Many aspects of cave animal biology cannot be understood through field observations alone. Access to some subterranean habitats is often technically challenging, rendering long-term monitoring of cave-dwelling species or investigating some aspects of their biology difficult. Also, contemporary research questions and methods require sampling individuals at certain life stages, and most cave adapted species have lengthy life spans or are not accessible in their natural habitats year-round. Therefore, we have established an animal facility in our laboratory where we keep cave-dwelling and related surface-dwelling crustacean species under controlled conditions. This allows us to study physiological and behavioral adaptations and the role of phenotypic plasticity in the evolution of these traits in cave dwellers. We are culturing freshwater, marine, and terrestrial isopods from three different families (Asellidae, Sphaeromatidae, and Trichoniscidae), among others. To date, we have established breeding colonies of several different cave and surface species pairs of aquatic asellids, and our most successful colonies have lived for two years and three generations. We have also established colonies of cave (freshwater) and surface (marine) sphaeromatids with varying degrees of success. Among terrestrial trichoniscids, colonies of cave species have persisted for more than two years, but without successful reproduction. Our repeated attempts to maintain surface species of Trichoniscus have been unsuccessful. Here we present our experiences to provide guidance for other researchers making similar attempts. We discuss general care practices such as decontamination of equipment and tools, quarantine, good and bad practices for small aquarium and terrarium design, housing, water treatment and conditioning, various food sources, and breeding approaches. We also review some of the problems we have encountered with our colonies and describe our attempts to solve them with varying degrees of success.

The role of phenotypic plasticity in the evolution of cave-dwelling animals

The surface ancestors of subterranean species are often hypothesized to possess pre-adaptations that enable them to successfully initiate colonization of caves. Nocturnal habits and the use of microhabitats such as the underside of rocks or leaf litter are two simple examples. However, there are many exceptions, and a mechanistic explanation for the evolution of a whole range of troglomorphic adaptations has yet to be found. To shed light on the phenotypic and molecular changes that accompany the early stages of cave colonization, we experimentally exposed the most closely related surface species or population of several cave-dwelling species including fish and crustaceans, from the earliest embryonic stage possible, to constant darkness, the single environmental condition characteristic of all subterranean habitats. Our results show that darkness induced a surprisingly large number of phenotypic changes, many of which resembled troglomorphic adaptations found in their respective cave-dwelling relatives (for example changes in fat content). However, some changes were contrary to what is considered adaptive in darkness, such as increased body pigmentation and enhancement in visual system, opposite to the two iconic features of troglomorphy. Overall, we conclude that phenotypic plasticity is an important mechanism for the rapid initiation of changes that may be favored or targeted by natural selection during critical initial steps in the evolution of cave-dwelling species.

Abstract A045: Multiple roles for plasticity in metastasis and therapy resistance in long-term survivors of metastatic colorectal cancer

Abstract Long-term survivors (LS) of metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC) who experience multiple recurrences with resectable oligometastatic disease provide an opportunity to explore co-evolution of the tumor and immune microenvironment. We profiled 16 LS of mCRC with a median follow-up of 9.3 years and median of 3 biopsies/resections per patient (range 2-7). We performed multi-omic profiling of 56 primary and 176 metastatic samples from formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissue using low pass whole genome sequencing, 3’ RNA sequencing and DNA methylation arrays. A machine learning cell classifier was used to quantify immune cell and fibroblast infiltration from hematoxylin and eosin staining. Copy number profiling showed that the fraction of genome altered remained relatively stable across time and tissue type but that already-altered segments underwent progressive fragmentation. Inter-timepoint divergence of copy number alterations was significantly higher than intra-timepoint divergence, and intra-timepoint divergence was lower for liver and lung metastases than for primary tumors. Chemotherapy treatment did not significantly affect either divergence type. Differential expression and gene set enrichment analysis (GSEA) revealed common pathways dysregulated in metastases compared to primaries, including reductions in E2F (important in G1/S checkpoint) and G2M checkpoint, suggestive of the onset of senescence in metastases. Tumors underwent progressive hypomethylation over time and analysis of genes with concordant changes in promoter methylation and expression revealed dysregulation in pathways related to endocytosis, cell adhesion and migration. This suggests an important role for phenotypic plasticity in driving the metastatic phenotype. There were transient increases in the proportion of macrophages, lymphocytes and neutrophils in tumors that had undergone neoadjuvant chemotherapy in the 6 months prior to resection and slight increases in M1 macrophage activity (by GSEA) in tumors that were previously therapy naïve. There were concordant transient increases in pathways associated with immune response (MYC V1 and MTORC1), as well as xenobiotic metabolism. The latter is a known mechanism of drug resistance to both the platinum- and fluoropyridine-based therapies used in CRC. There were also more sustained increases post-chemotherapy in inflammatory and immune pathways associated with the adaptive immune response and tissue injury and repair. These findings were corroborated by concordant changes in promoter methylation. These data suggest that there is a threshold level of aneuploidy required to facilitate CRC metastasis but the migratory phenotype and adaptation to the metastatic niche are driven by plasticity. Chemotherapy induces differing short-term and long-term anti-tumor immune responses in the local microenvironment. We see evidence that mCRCs are able to mount plastic pro-survival mechanisms in response to chemotherapy. The role of phenotypic plasticity in the establishment of range margins.

It has been argued that adaptive phenotypic plasticity may facilitate range expansions over spatially and temporally variable environments. However, plasticity may induce fitness costs. This may hinder the evolution of plasticity. Earlier modelling studies examined the role of plasticity during range expansions of populations with fixed genetic variance. However, genetic variance evolves in natural populations. This may critically alter model outcomes. We ask: how does the capacity for plasticity in populations with evolving genetic variance alter range margins that populations without the capacity for plasticity are expected to attain? We answered this question using computer simulations and analytical approximations. We found a critical plasticity cost above which the capacity for plasticity has no impact on the expected range of the population. Below the critical cost, by contrast, plasticity facilitates range expansion, extending the range in comparison to that expected for populations without plasticity. We further found that populations may evolve plasticity to buffer temporal environmental fluctuations, but only when the plasticity cost is below the critical cost. Thus, the cost of plasticity is a key factor involved in range expansions of populations with the potential to express plastic response in the adaptive trait.This article is part of the theme issue ‘Species' ranges in the face of changing environments (part I)’.

The evolutionary significance of human brown adipose tissue: Integrating the timescales of adaptation

While human adaptability is regarded as a classical topic in anthropology, recent work provides new insight into metabolic adaptations to cold climates and the role of phenotypic plasticity in human evolution. A growing body of literature demonstrates that adults retain brown adipose tissue (BAT) which may play a role in non-shivering thermogenesis. In this narrative review, we apply the timescales of adaptation framework in order to explore the adaptive significance of human BAT. Human variation in BAT is shaped by multiple adaptive modes (i.e., allostasis, acclimatization, developmental adaptation, epigenetic inheritance, and genetic adaptation), and together the adaptive modes act as an integrated system. We hypothesize that plasticity in BAT facilitated the successful expansion of human populations into circumpolar regions, allowing for selection of genetic adaptations to cold climates to take place. Future research rooted in human energetics and biocultural perspectives is essential for understanding BAT's adaptive and health significance.

The role of epigenetic regulation in adaptive phenotypic plasticity of plants

In recent decades, knowledge about the role of epigenetic regulation of gene expression in plant responses to external stimuli and in adaptation of plants to adverse environmental fluctuations have extended significantly. DNA methylation is considered as the main molecular mechanism that provides genomic information and contributes to the understanding of the molecular basis of phenotypic variations based on epigenetic modifications. Unfortunately, the vast majority of research in this area has been performed on the model species Arabidopsis thaliana. The development of the methylation-sensitive amplified polymorphism (MSAP) method has made it possible to implement the large-scale detection of DNA methylation alterations in wild non-model and agricultural plants with large and highly repetitive genomes in natural and manipulated habitats. The article presents current information on DNA methylation in species of natural communities and crops and its importance in plant development and adaptive phenotypic plasticity, along with brief reviews of current ideas about adaptive phenotypic plasticity and epigenetic regulation of gene expression. The great potential of further studies of the epigenetic role in phenotypic plasticity of a wide range of non-model species in natural populations and agrocenoses for understanding the molecular mechanisms of plant existence in the changing environment in onto- and phylogeny, directly related to the key tasks of forecasting the effects of global warming and crop selection, is emphasized. Specific taxa of the Ukrainian flora, which, in authors’ opinion, are promising and interesting for this type of research, are recommended.

The seeds of invasion: enhanced germination in invasive European populations of black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia L.) compared to native American populations.

Local adaptation and the evolution of phenotypic plasticity may facilitate biological invasions. Both processes can enhance germination and seedling recruitment, which are crucial life-history traits for plants. The rate, timing and speed of germination have recently been documented as playing a major role during the invasion process. Black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia L.) is a North American tree, which has spread widely throughout Europe. A recent study demonstrated that a few populations are the source of European black locust. Thus, invasive populations can be compared to native ones in order to identify genetic-based phenotypic differentiation and the role of phenotypic plasticity can thereby be assessed. A quantitative genetics experiment was performed to evaluate 13 juvenile traits of both native and invasive black locust populations (3000 seeds, 20 populations) subjected to three different thermal treatments (18°C, 22°C and 31°C). The results revealed European populations to have a higher germination rate than the native American populations (88% versus 60%), and even when genetic distance between populations was considered. Moreover, this trait showed lower plasticity to temperature in the invasive range than in the native one. Conversely, other studied traits showed high plasticity to temperature, but they responded in a similar way to temperature increase: the warmer the temperature, the higher the growth rate or germination traits values. The demonstrated genetic differentiation between native and invasive populations testifies to a shift between ranges for the maximum germination percentage. This pattern could be due to human-mediated introduction of black locust.

The roles of phenotypic plasticity and adaptation in morphology and performance of an invasive species in a novel environment

1. Species introductions provide insights into how populations respond to new environments and selection pressures through rapid adaptation and adaptive phenotypic plasticity. However, maladaptive responses are increasingly recognised to also be common in nature. The spotted‐wing drosophila, Drosophila suzukii, has rapidly invaded divergent environments providing the opportunity to examine adaptive and maladaptive phenotypic and evolutionary responses to its introduced range.2. We studied how population density in the field and wing size of individuals varied over an elevational gradient on Hawaii. We then conducted a reciprocal common garden experiment to evaluate how temperature influenced wing size and other correlates of fitness. We did this by reciprocally rearing D. suzukii collected from low and high elevations in temperatures representative of low and high elevation.3. We observed a wing size increase with elevation. Additionally, flies were more abundant at higher elevation. In the reciprocal common garden experiment, flies emerged faster in the warm, low‐elevation temperature and developed larger wings in the cool, high‐elevation temperature. Emergence of flies from high‐ and low‐elevation sites showed a pattern suggesting maladaptation to the temperature representing their home environment.4. We suggest that opposing selection pressures, the high vagility of flies, and extreme plasticity in body size constrain adaptation to temperature along an elevational gradient. Although successful invasive species such as D. suzukii often exhibit local adaptation, this research demonstrates that invasive species can be successful even without such adaptation.
