Research on the Cultivation of Cross-Cultural Awareness in High School English Reading Teaching

English reading instruction plays a vital role in English language teaching, particularly in the high school stage where reading materials often encompass diverse cultural backgrounds. The revised 2017 edition of the “The New English Curriculum Standards” further emphasizes the importance of cross-cultural communication skills in English teaching. This study seeks to analyze the present state of high school students’ cross-cultural awareness and communication abilities, while also exploring the significance of fostering cross-cultural awareness through reading, as well as the challenges faced in this process. The study also provides suggestions to enhance students’ cross-cultural awareness and communication abilities.

CHOOSING AUTHENTIC MATERIALS IN ENGLISH TEACHING: A COMPREHENSIVE FRAMEWORK FOR EFFECTIVE LANGUAGE ACQUISITION

Authentic materials play a pivotal role in English language teaching as they reflect real-world language usage and cultural contexts, thereby enhancing learners' language proficiency and cultural competence. This paper aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the significance of authentic materials in English teachingand proposes a framework for selecting and utilizing authentic materials effectively in language classrooms. Drawing upon theoretical perspectives and empirical studies, this paper explores the benefits, challenges, and strategies associated with authentic materials integration. Furthermore, it offers practical recommendations for teachers to incorporate authentic materials in their teaching practices, fostering a dynamic and engaging language learning environment conducive to learners' linguistic and intercultural development.

EFL TEACHERS’ USE OF MOTIVATIONAL STRATEGIES IN TEACHING VSTEP SPEAKING TO STUDENTS LEARNING TO REACH LEVEL 3 OF VSTEP (B1) AND FACTORS INFLUENCING THEIR PRACTICES

Motivation plays a vital role in English language teaching and learning, especially in the development of speaking skills. This study, therefore, aims to examine teachers' use of motivational strategies (MS) in teaching VSTEP speaking to students learning to reach level 3 of VSTEP (B1) and the factors influencing their practices. Data were collected through observations and questionnaires with two and 54 teachers respectively. The findings reveal that teachers in the private sector demonstrated a range of motivational strategies in teaching VSTEP speaking to students who aspired to reach Level 3 (B1) in VSTEP. This study also reports five factors influencing the use of MS including teacher-related, student-related, school-related, MS-related and testing factors. This study contributes to the understanding of EFL teachers' use of motivational strategies in teaching speaking skills within the context of VSTEP Level 3 (B1). Self vs. peer assessment activities in EFL-speaking classes: impacts on students’ self-regulated learning, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills

AbstractAssessment has several advantages like involving students in learning and making them cognizant of their strengths and weaknesses. The effects of peer assessment and self-assessment as two main kinds of assessment have not examined on EFL learners’ self-regulated learning, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills; therefore, the present research attempted to inspect the impacts of self and peer assessment activities on self-regulated learning, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills of Iranian EFL learners. To do so, 75 Iranian EFL learners were selected and divided into two experimental groups (peer assessment group (PAG) and self-assessment group (SAG)) and one control group (CG). Then, three questionnaires of self-regulated learning, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills were administered to the students as the pre-tests of the study. After that, one experimental group received the treatment via using self-assessment and the other experimental group received the instruction through peer assessment. The control group received a teacher-based assessment instruction. After teaching 13 English conversations to all groups, 3 post-tests were given to them to measure the impacts of the treatment on their self-regulated learning, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. The results of one-way ANOVA showed that there was a substantial difference between the post-tests of the experimental groups and the control group. The results showed that both experimental groups outperformed the control group in the post-tests of self-regulated learning, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. Furthermore, the outcomes revealed that there were no significant differences between the post-tests of the experimental groups. It can be concluded that both types of assessments play a vital role in English language teaching and learning. Based on the results of this study, language teachers, materials developers, and education authorities can concentrate on using self and peer assessments as one of the main strategies to develop the language learning ability of Iranian EFL learners.

The Role of English Language Teaching in Promoting Intercultural Understanding in Pakistani Classrooms

Introduction: English language teaching (ELT) is essential for linguistic growth and building cross-cultural understanding in Pakistani classrooms. Given the multicultural makeup of Pakistan and the importance of English worldwide, it is critical to consider how ELT might advance intercultural understanding. Research Methodology: This study emphasizes the value of this method in the Pakistani context by examining how Pakistani EFL teachers see "interculturality" as a pedagogical strategy in teaching English as a foreign language through descriptive and inferential analysis. Findings: According to the findings, English language instruction plays various roles in Pakistani classrooms that support intercultural understanding. Examining various cultures, dispelling myths, and encouraging tolerance and empathy in students are all made possible by language training. Furthermore, teachers utilize various instructional approaches, including literature exploration and cultural exchange activities, to improve students' intercultural competency. Conclusion: English language instruction fosters empathy and meaningful connections between students from different cultural origins, essential for advancing intercultural understanding in Pakistani classrooms. Unfortunately, obstacles to successful implementation include language imperialism and scarce resources. To maximize the potential of ELT for fostering intercultural understanding in Pakistan, educators, policymakers, and curriculum developers must work together. Recommendation: Given the results, educational stakeholders are urged to prioritize intercultural integration while creating English language courses. This can be accomplished with teacher education programs, culturally aware lesson planning, and the inclusion of diverse opinions in class discussions. Furthermore, forming partnerships with international schools can open doors for cross-cultural exchanges and improve the educational opportunities for Pakistani pupils. By implementing the above recommendations, Pakistan can effectively use English language training to promote cross-cultural understanding and enhance global citizenship.

Developing Addie Model: Speaking for Informal Interaction Based on OBE Curriculum

Coursebook plays an essential role in English language teaching. It is a guide to the prescribed curriculum and syllabus. However, the coursebook does not always match the needs of students and lecturers. This study aims to develop a speaking coursebook using the ADDIE (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation) model based on OBE Curriculum. Researchers used Research and Development (RD) in which the data were collected through questionnaire and interview. There were 26 students and two lecturers in the English Language Education Study Program. From the finding, the design and development of the coursebook are highly influenced by the result of the needs analysis. From the impact of the need analysis, the researchers developed the coursebook for Speaking for Informal Interaction that provides achievable teaching ideas for lecturers, including speaking activities, vocabulary, grammar, dialogue examples, exercise (individual, pair, or group work), and lesson learned related to the topics discussed. The result of validation from experts (design, content, and language), students, and lecturers agreed that the coursebook had met the criteria of a good coursebook. The results of this study can later be effectively used to support the achievement of student communicative competence, especially in the Speaking for Informal Interaction course.

Students’ Perspective on the Use of Google Sites in General English Class at Higher Education

Technology plays a significant role in English Language Teaching during the pandemic. There are several platforms that both teachers and students need to adapt to. Google seems to have a major role in developing platforms for both teachers and students. However, among those platforms, this study focuses on the use of E-Module arranged using the Google Sites platform as supplementary material in General English classes. Google Sites was chosen as it is a web-based module that teachers can personalize to fulfill students’ needs. Since this study aims to evaluate the use of E-Module arranged using the Google Sites platform as supplementary material in General English classes at Tribhuwana Tunggadewi University, this study employed descriptive quantitative method using survey to gather the data. The population of the study was all students who enroll in General English during the academic year 2021/2022. From the population, 328 students participated in the survey. The survey questions covered learning efficiency, experience, and motivation from students’ points of view. The study findings indicated that more than half of respondents agreed that the module was very good to use without revision, which means the module was efficient, fun, and motivating. Yet, the average of 25% of each question demands minor improvement for the module as well as providing the printed version. Therefore, teachers and lecturers may use Google Sites as supplementary material. For further study, as the pandemic becomes endemic, researchers might conduct an evaluation of e-module both in online and offline classes.Keywords: E-nglish Module, Google Sites, Students’ Perspective

Intercultural citizenship and the internationalisation of higher education: the role of English language teaching

Abstract The expanding internationalisation of higher education (HE) has resulted in the inte rcultural dimensions becoming a core aim of many institutions. This is frequently represented though the concept of intercultural or global citizenship with students expected to engage with academic, professional and social communities across multiple scales from the local to the global. The language though which both the internationalisation of HE and intercultural citizenships is expected to take place is often English, or more precisely ELF, epically in English medium education (EME). Therefore, given this key role for English, English language teaching (ELT) provides an ideal setting for developing intercultural citizenship education. However, at present, this is an under-researched area. To address this gap, this collection of short papers provides a snap shot of current thinking and research form ELF perspectives. We include reports on the development of intercultural citizenship through study abroad for university students from China, Japan and Thailand; the role of intercultural citizenship in pre-service teacher education in Turkey; and a discussion of the relationship between intercultural citizenship, identity, symbolic power and language in the ELT and EMI classroom.

English language teaching and English-medium instruction

Abstract The role of English language teaching (ELT) in English-medium instruction (EMI) can vary widely depending on education policy objectives and teachers’ responses to EMI students’ language and learning needs. In this paper, we provide a narrative review of a growing number of studies reporting language-related challenges as the foremost barrier to successful implementation of EMI. Such research highlights the fundamental roles that English for Academic Purposes (EAP) and English for Specific Purposes have in the provision of targeted language support for EMI students. Based on this review, we set a future research agenda, calling for explorations into the efficacy of English language programs for supporting EMI students to reach educational outcomes. We also call for explorations of greater collaboration between English language practitioners and content lecturers to ensure the right type of language support is being provided to students. The paper ends with a discussion for the need to reposition EAP as English for Specific Academic Purposes to ensure students’ specific academic needs are met. Essentially, universities offering EMI will need to account for their unique institutional characteristics to ensure ELT provision is central in organizational and curricular structures; otherwise, they may be setting their own students up to fail.

Cultural Representations in Indian English Language Teaching Textbooks

Culture plays an integral role in English language teaching (ELT) and is a necessary component of ELT textbooks. This study explores the issue of cultural representation in the reading components of ELT textbooks in India, which has received little attention in ELT research world-wide. By incorporating 10 ELT textbooks from four states, one national board from India, and a sequential mixed-method design, this research is aimed at investigating the cultural representation of the textbook content, characteristics of people in terms of race, gender and nationality, and the depth of the cultural content. While the results have revealed a general domination of cultural representations originating from Britain, including a major proportion of British, Irish, and generally White characters, a significant amount of gender bias, and overall minimal in-depth cultural engagement, there exists wide regional variations. Language teachers may adapt cultural representations that are relevant with other pedagogical resources to engage English language learners in critical pursuits.

NEW FORMS OF USING WEBSITES IN ONLINE ENGLISH TEACHING

The article is dedicated to using educational Internet resources for teaching English online. This article examined the concepts and essence of educational Internet resources, what criteria teachers should follow when choosing Internet resources, what features of using a foreign language with the help of Internet resources should be considered. This article deals with the phenomenon of globalization of education, which entailed the significant influence of the Internet and computer technology on the methodology of teaching English during the pandemic. It also describes modern ideas and trends of foreign colleagues in teaching a foreign language. Furthermore, this work outlines the types of Internet resources that can be used in teaching a foreign language at the present stage of education. The Internet is a huge source of information about the language being studied, the culture and traditions of a foreign language, its realities and characteristics. The information technology has played an important role in English language teaching and it has offered a better tool to explore the new teaching method. The purpose of the article is the use of information technology in increasing the effectiveness of teaching English, developing students' creative abilities at English lеssons. There given various available online tools in the Internet for the students and recommend the mоdern tools for English teachers.

Existing EFL Pedagogies in Thai Higher Education: Views from Thai University Lecturers

Since English is extensively used among linguacultural users to access life opportunities, it has become a requisite foreign language in the Thai educational system. To prepare Thai learners for this new changing role of English and reduce English Language Teaching dependency on the native English variety, this study aimed to explore English lecturers’ voices in Thai universities on existing English as a Foreign Language (EFL) pedagogies at the Thai tertiary level with the research question: how do English lecturers in Thai universities perceive EFL in Thai universities? Data was collected through semi-structured interviews with 25 Thai EFL university lecturers selected from ten different universities in Thailand and analyzed using content analysis. The finding reveals that EFL-oriented pedagogy plays a dominant role in English language teaching (ELT) education in Thai classrooms, illustrating three main salient themes from the study: (1) EFL pedagogies; (2) EFL materials; and (3) EFL curriculums. The result shows that the pedagogy is less responsive in the changing roles of English use and its widespread worldwide, especially among diverse linguacultural interlocutors. Hence, English university lecturers should reconsider, adjust, and made more practical glocal changes in English language teaching for the purpose of language teaching, language planning and predicting language change.

Native teachers, non-native teachers and ELF. Same aims, different approaches?

The spread of English used as a lingua franca (ELF) in several multilingual communicative settings and the emergence of World Englishes (WE) have inevitably impacted on the field of English language teaching (ELT) calling into question traditional notions and assumptions and highlighting the need to revisiting teachers’ roles and approaches to the English classroom. In this respect a research study was carried out withing a recent PRIN project which aimed at the exploration of ELF pedagogy in the Italian school contexts. The Roma 3-unit members investigated teachers’ current practices in English language classrooms, with the research objective of enhancing WE and ELF aware teaching to be implemented especially in the training of teachers involved in multilingual learning environments. Two online questionnaires were used in order to gather data from non-native English-speaking teachers (NNESTs) and English Language Assistants (CEL) – i.e. native English-speaking teachers (NESTs), to investigate current ELT practices as well as teachers’ attitudes and beliefs about the current status of English both in Italian high schools and at university level. This paper aims at illustrating the findings of the survey administered to almost 80 NESTs working as language assistants in Italian universities and language centres. A 32-question survey was administered in 2017 to investigate native teachers’ ELF-awareness, attitudes and beliefs, especially, in ELT current routines and concerns, models and lesson planning, material development and assessment criteria. The main results will highlight respondents’ emerging identities as native teachers as well as their positions and views towards ELF-awareness and New Englishes (NE). Implications for the need to go beyond the deep-rooted discriminatory dichotomy ‘NESTs vs. NNESTs’ and for the reconceptualization of the role of ELT for the new societal trends will also be discussed.

Role of Mobile Phone for English Language Teaching

Mobile phone is a recent technology in teaching English. Mobile phone provides simple and easy way in developing teaching and learning activities, therefore, the researcher was interested in finding the data information about the role of mobile phone for English language teaching. The utilization of mobile phone offers valuable opportunities for creating an effective teaching strategy. The students' perspectives are crucial for getting their views of role of mobile phone in language teaching. This case study was to find out the students' perspectives of mobile phone role in English language teaching. A qualitative design was employed for the purpose of getting the data. Mainly semi structure interview was used as the research instruments. The result of her research finding showed that most students were having good response towards the usage of mobile phones in language learning but some findings shown that the problems were also occurred at the same moment of using it. These research findings were contributed the next research for more deeply dig for language learning.

Phillipson’s Linguistic Imperialism Revisited at the light of Latin American Decoloniality Approach

A summary of the book Linguistic Imperialism, by Phillipson (1992)2 is presented here. The purpose is to highlight its current scope and permanent values in consonance with intuitions, criticism and alternatives proposed by Latin America Modernity/coloniality Group. Criteria of analysis are based on a re-reading of the work in the light of the decolonial perspective, with the aim of proposing pedagogical insights which guide language and literature teachers in approaching their study contents with a critical vision. The idea is to remark the role of English Language Teaching for the maintenance of power structures and for its potential for creating new epistemological approaches to language teaching and learning. An epistemological turnaround in the linguistic formation of future educational personnel is a must for that end.

Neoliberalism and ELT Coursebook Content

ABSTRACTThe widespread use of commercially produced coursebooks tailored to a global market remains a reality within English language teaching (ELT) across a broad range of teaching contexts. Most of these coursebooks profess to being vaguely communicative in their approach, while at the same time attempting to package and present language as a standardized commodity, within a broader ideological framework that enthusiastically embraces a view of the world in terms of aspirational, atomized, competitive individuals pursuing their self-realization through a “free” market. Most teachers working within ELT, although perhaps critical of such standardized products, might not be aware that earlier examples of ELT materials embodied a quite different set of values and assumptions, and a different view of the role ELT served in the world. Drawing on the content of a range of coursebooks over a period of 40 years, the author attempts to show how the ideological positioning of ELT coursebooks has evolved and also what this may tell us about the role of ELT in the political economy of neoliberalism.

Coursebook plays an important role in English language teaching. It not only offers teacher curriculum aims and contents, but also guides teacher's teaching and students' learning. Nowadays, the wealth of published materials for English language teaching available on the market makes selecting the right coursebook a challenging task. So to make effective evaluation on coursebook depending on certain evaluation criteria is of essential importance. Firstly this paper makes a brief introduction of the evaluated coursebook and the evaluation criteria. Then it makes evaluation on four skills of Unit 7 in the coursebook. Lastly it makes a conclusion on the evaluation.

The Use of Multimedia Technology in English Language Teaching: A Global Perspective

This paper aims to analyze the use of technology to English language teaching in the non-native speaking countries and to bring out the problems faced by both teachers and learners of English. A Study on the Vagueness in English Language Teaching from the Pragmatic Perspective

Vagueness, as an intrinsic feature of human language, has caused much attention. Many researches on vagueness have already been done in different fields, namely in daily conversations, newspapers, advertisements, science, literature, business affairs, and the like. However, up to now, most researches on vagueness have been confined to the semantic field, while the pragmatic perspective had not been paid much attention to yet. Besides, so far, much effort has been made on the theoretical study of language vagueness, but less on that in different aspects of English Language Teaching. Since vagueness plays a very important role in English language teaching, a research on this topic is necessary and essential. Based on the theories of pragmatic vagueness, this paper attempts to analyze the pragmatic function of vagueness, various language vagueness phenomena existing in the whole process of English language teaching and its functions. Then some possible suggestions for vague language teaching are proposed, namely, teaching with reference to Chinese, practice based on text, and a thorough understanding of English culture. It is hoped that it is beneficial to English language teaching.

Diversity Matters: Japan's Domestic Diversity and the Role of English Language Teaching

This article investigates how Japanese university students perceive Japan's domestic diversity and understand the role of English within that context. Surveys and interviews with Japanese students reveal how they reflect on their own experiences with diversity in their past English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classes and also help to explore the role of English teaching/learning in multicultural Japan. Insufficient attention to domestic diversity may mislead EFL learners when they encounter their English interlocutors with different cultural and linguistic backgrounds because this misunderstanding can create prejudices about English speakers and may reproduce a racial/ethnic and linguistic hierarchy. Drawing on the survey and interview results, this article suggests possible strategies for promoting successful intercultural communication through English and teaching English as a global language.
