Barometric pressure decrease induces density-dependent changes in foraging behaviour in a parasitoid fly.

Barometric pressure is an environmental factor involved in the modulation of a variety of activities in insects. Generally, a drop in barometric pressure precedes the arrival of weather conditions that can affect insect activities and life expectancy. We simulated different scenarios of pressure drop in a modified hermetic chamber and studied their influence on the host-seeking behaviour of the larvae of the robber fly Mallophora ruficauda using air stationary olfactometers. In addition, we studied whether larval density modulates orientation to the host under the same scenarios of pressure drop. We found that motivation to search for hosts is affected by the same slope of pressure drop in both low- and high-density larvae. However, larval density modulates the onset of the responses to pressure decrease, as low-density larvae stop searching for hosts more quickly than high-density larvae. This result reflects an avoidance strategy according to which low-density larvae would have a reduced host range and higher risk of mortality and fewer chances to find a suitable host under adverse pressure conditions. Low-density larvae, known to prefer healthy hosts, do not search for parasitized hosts under normal pressure conditions nor under a range of pressure drops, strongly suggesting that host selectivity is not modulated by barometric pressure. This study paves the way to a better understanding of the changes in crucial insect behaviours induced by weather conditions, and provides more knowledge about the risk factors likely to affect insect survival in the context of foraging ecology.

Heteromorphosis associated to host-exploitation in an atypical parasitoid, Mallophora ruficauda (Diptera: Asilidae)

In this work, we provide morphological illustration and descriptions of the immature stages of the ectoparasitoid robber fly Mallophora ruficauda. Additionally, we studied the ecological aspects of its life cycle through the correlation between the morphology and function performed in each phase of the consumption of their host, the white grub Cyclocephala signaticollis. For the morphological description and quantification of length and width of the egg and larval instars I–II, images were used through optical and scanning electron microscopy. Individuals from larval instars III–V were weighed and measured with digital calibre directly. Finally, images were taken of the cephalic structures of the larval instars and through the use of image processing software we measured in each instar the size of cephalic structures. In addition, the changes in the width of cephalic capsule and the relative size of the maxillary palps and labrum with respect to the width of cephalic capsule were studied for each larval instar through GLMs, to relate the morphology of the cephalic structures with the function they perform. We found that the cephalic structures of the larva undergo changes when moulting to the next instar, according to their relationship with the host, matching with the stage of development where the processes of orientation to the host and attachment to its cuticle take place. These observations reveal, for the first time in a parasitoid asilid larva, the correlation between cephalic morphology and ecological function during the parasitism process and host use.

Description of antennal structures of the parasitoid Mallophora ruficauda (Diptera: Asilidae) and its relationship with resources searching behaviour

The robber fly Mallophora ruficauda is a parasitoid of white grubs (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) inhabiting in Pampas region of Argentina. Females locate host’s habitat and lay eggs away from the host in tall grasses. After hatching, larvae fall to the ground and actively seek hosts. Previous works suggested that female would detect the presence of host’s chemical cues, but sensory organs involved in olfaction are still unknown. However, few studies have looked at dipteran parasitoids sensilla, and no study has been undertaken in Asilidae species. The aim of this work was to determine the presence, density, distribution and morphology of chemosensilla in M. ruficauda antennae using optic and scanning microscope techniques. We found that antennae have 4 segments: scape, pedicel, postpedicel and style. We identified basiconic and trichoid sensilla, small and long bristles, and sensory pits. Basiconic sensilla are multiporous and are widely spread between the small bristles through the postpedicel. Trichoid sensilla are grouped in 6–8 units on latero-ventral margin of postpedicel, have mobile base, striated wall and an apical porous. Small bristles are present in the pedicel and postpedicel, and long bristles are found in groups on scape and pedicel. Three different types of sensory pits were observed, with basiconic sensilla, distributed along external and internal lateral side of the postpedicel. Considering the morphological characteristics of the antennae, and based on the olfaction biomechanics, the structure and distribution of these cuticular structures of the parasitoid antennae would contribute to the odour detection mechanism in adults of M. ruficauda.

Orientation mechanisms and sensory organs involved in host location in a dipteran parasitoid larva

The robber fly Mallophora ruficauda is one of the principal pests of apiculture in the Pampas region of Argentina. Larvae are solitary ectoparasitoids of third-instar scarab beetle larvae. Females of M. ruficauda do not lay eggs on or near the hosts, but on tall grasses. After hatching, larvae are dispersed by the wind and drop to the ground, where they dig and search for potential hosts. It is known that second-instar larvae of M. ruficauda exhibit active host-searching behaviour towards their preferred hosts, i.e., third-instar larvae of Cyclocephala signaticollis. Although host-location seems to be mediated by chemical cues, the mechanism of orientation and the sensory organs involved in host location remain unknown. We carried out behavioural experiments in the laboratory to address these questions. We also tested whether the orientation behaviour is exclusively based on the use of chemical cues. We found that larvae of M. ruficauda detect the chemicals with chemosensilla on the maxillary palps. Only one maxillary palp suffices for orientation, but their bilateral ablation abolishes orientation. Besides, an hexane extract of the host body was as attractive as a live host. Our results support that M. ruficauda larvae find their hosts underground by means of chemoklinotaxis.

Life-history traits in a parasitoid dipteran species with free-living and obligate parasitic immature stages

The robber fly Mallophora ruficauda Weidemann (Diptera: Asilidae) is an important pest of apiculture in the Pampas of Argentina. As adults, they prey on honey bees and other insects, whereas the larvae are ectoparasitoids of Scarabaeidae grubs. Females of M. ruficauda lay eggs in grassland where the larvae drop to the ground after being wind-dispersed and burrow underground searching for their hosts. A temporal asynchrony exists between the appearance of the parasitoid larvae and the host, with the parasitoid appearing earlier than the host. The present study investigates whether a strategy of synchronization with the host exists in M. ruficauda and determines which of the larval instars are responsible for it. Survival patterns and duration of the immature stages of the parasitoid are investigated to determine whether there is a modulation in the development at any time that could reduce the asynchrony. Experiments are carried out to determine the survival and duration of free-living larval stadia in the absence of cues associated with the host. It is established that the first instar is capable of moulting to the second instar without feeding and in the absence of any cues related to the host, a unique event for parasitoids. Also, the first instar of M. ruficauda moults to the second stage within a narrow temporal window, and the second instar never moults in the absence of the host. After parasitizing a host, the second instar has the longest lifespan and is the most variable with respect to survival compared with the rest of the instars. All larval instars, except for those in the last (fifth) stadium, have a similar rate of mortality to that of second-instar larvae. Additionally, it is established that the host is killed during the fourth (parasitoid) stadium and that the first- and fifth-larval instars develop independently of the host. Finally, possible mechanisms that could aid in compensating for the asynchrony between the parasitoid and the host, promoting the host–parasitoid encounter, are discussed.

Spatial density‐dependent parasitism and specificity in the robber flyMallophora ruficauda(Diptera: Asilidae)

AbstractThe density‐dependence in parasitism by the robber flyMallophora ruficauda(Diptera: Asilidae) on scarab beetle larvae (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) populations was studied in the present research.Mallophora ruficaudais a pestiferous species common in the open grasslands of the Pampas region of South America. Adults are predators of insects and larvae are solitary parasitoids of third instar larvae of several species of scarab beetle (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae). In contrast with most studied host‐parasitoid interactions, host searching byM. ruficaudais carried out by both larvae and adults. Typically, robber fly females lay eggs on tall grasses from where larvae drop to the ground, and attack hosts which are buried in the soil. We carried out our study at two spatial scales close to 14 apiaries located in the provinces of Buenos Aires and Entre Ríos (Argentina). We found that parasitism is density‐independent at the larger spatial scale and inversely density‐dependent at the smaller one. We also found thatM. ruficaudaselectsCyclocephala signaticollisamong several scarab beetle species. Specificity is observed both at large and small spatial scales. We discuss the implications of both host specificity and host searching behaviour on the observed parasitism patterns.

Insights to host discrimination and host acceptance behaviour in a parasitoid (Diptera: Asilidae): Implications for fitness

The robber fly Mallophora ruficauda is one of the principal pests of apiculture in the Pampas region of Argentina. As adults they prey on honey bees and other insects, while as larvae they are solitary ectoparasitoids of third instar scarab beetle larvae. Females of M. ruficauda lay eggs away from the host in tall grasses. After being dispersed by the wind, larvae drop to the ground, where they dig in search of their hosts. It is known that second instar larvae of M. ruficauda exhibit active host searching behaviour towards its preferred host, third instar larva of Cyclocephala signaticollis. Although the means by which host location occurs has been studied and since superparasitism is a frequent scenario in the field, no information about host discrimination and host acceptance is available. We carried out studies in the field and behavioural experiments in the laboratory to determine if M. ruficauda is capable of quality host discrimination. We also studied if this parasitoid is capable of conspecific detection in order to avoid superparasitism. Finally, we analyzed the conditions under which superparasitism occurs in the field. We report here that the second instar larva of M. ruficauda is able to discriminate the parasitism status of the host by means of chemical cues, but is not capable of detecting conspecifics prior to attacking a host. We also found that the host cannot detect the presence of the parasitoid by means of chemical cues, so that no counter-defense against parasitism occurs. Furthermore, we determined that superparasitism occurs on the heavier hosts, i.e. those with more abundant resources which could harbor several parasitoid individuals. Finally, we discuss the possible implications of larval host location and host discrimination decisions on the fitness of this parasitoid.

The ontogeny of host-seeking behaviour in a parasitoid dipteran

The robber fly Mallophora ruficauda is one of the principal apiculture pests in the Pampas region of Argentina. As adults, they prey on honeybees and other insects, while as larvae they are ectoparasitoids of third-instar scarab larvae. Females of M. ruficauda lay eggs in tall grasses. After being dispersed by the wind, larvae drop to the ground, where they dig in search of their hosts. It is known that M. ruficauda larvae exhibit active host-searching behaviour; however, it is unknown which instars are involved in this search. We carried out experiments in the laboratory to determine which larval stages are involved in host location. We report here that the second instar of M. ruficauda orientates specifically toward a source of Cyclocephala signaticollis odour, while first larval instar is indifferent to the host cues. Furthermore, we have determined that second instar larvae are more motivated to initiate exploratory movements than larva of the first stage. So far as we know, this is the first case among parasitoids, where the second instar is responsible for host location. Here we provide relevant information of this parasitoid's host-searching strategy, increasing the available knowledge of this significant apiculture pest.

Host-seeking behavior in larvae of the robber fly Mallophora ruficauda (Diptera: Asilidae)

The robber fly Mallophora ruficauda is the most important pest of apiculture in the Pampas region of Argentina. Adults prey on honeybees and other insects, while larvae parasitize larvae of scarab beetles, which live underground. Females of M. ruficauda do not search for hosts but instead lay eggs in tall pastures. Once hatched, larvae drop to the ground and burrow underground to search for their hosts. We tested in the laboratory whether larvae of M. ruficauda actively search for their hosts using host and/or host-related chemical cues. We report that M. ruficauda detects its host using chemical cues that originate in the posterior half of the host’s body, most likely from an abdominal exocrine structure. This particular host-searching strategy is described for the first time in Asilidae.

The sexual behavior of the robber-fly Mallophora ruficauda Wied. (Asilidae, Asilinae) in normal and experimental conditions

Field observations have revealed that males of the robber-fly Mallophora ruficauda Wied. perform the following sequence of motor actions during courtship: (1) hovering; (2) rhythmic flicking of the third pair of legs; and (3) copulation attempts. Contrasting with the activity exhibited by males, females of Mallophora remain practically motionless during the sexual display. We have only detected vibrations of the wings triggered by the contact of the third pair of legs of dancing males. (These different motor actions have been grouped in three sequential phases of courtship termed 1, 2 and 3; Fig. 2.) Copulation occurs after thirty to forty minutes of courtship. Rustic dummies showing the main color pattern of the species are able to release the different phases of the sexual display. In these circumstances, however, copulation attempts occur very soon, a few seconds after detection of the potential mate. It is important to note that courtship is also elicited by atypical dummies not showing the color patterns characteristics of this species (BDs, IDs). Conversely, RDs and YDs are ineffective for triggering courtship. The experiments performed with dummies of different sizes demonstrated that phase 3 of courtship only occurs with normal or oversized dummies. It was also found that dummies pinned on a vertical twig, with their longest axis oriented parallel with respect to the ground, rarely elicit complete sexual display. Concerning the biological significance of courtship in this species, our findings suggest that the sexual display of the male inhibits the fleeing tendency of the female (FaM type of courtship according to Morris [10]).
