Assessing the design of road traffic death information systems in Iran: A participatory systems approach

AimTo describe and analyze the information architecture and information pathways of the road traffic death recording, registration and reporting system in Guilan Province, northernIran. MethodsWe used Business Process Mapping, a qualitative approach. This participatory and iterative approach consists of a document review, key informant interviews, development of a process map and a participatory workshop with key stakeholders to illuminate and validate the findings. We classified the tasks performed in the system into three phases: (1) Identification and recording; (2) Notification and registration, and (3) Production of statistics. ResultsWe identified 13 stakeholders, with operating and influencing roles in the process of identification, registration and production of statistics about road traffic deaths in Guilan province. The three main sources of road traffic death statistics are the Ministry of Health and Medical Education, the National Organization for Civil Registration and the Forensic Medicine Organization. Our results reveal a highly fragmented system with minimal cross-sectoral data exchange. Each stakeholder operates in a silo resulting in delays and redundancies in the operating system. In the absence of an effective communication among stakeholders, the information exchange was dependent on the family of the deceased. These fragmented information silos alter the compilation of cause of death statistics and result in under-reporting and discrepancies in road traffic deaths figures. ConclusionsDesigning a comprehensive road traffic information system that provides accurate and timely information requires an understanding of the information flow and the entangled web of different stakeholders operating in the system. Participatory systems approaches such as process mapping can assist in capturing the complexity of the system and the integration process by facilitating stakeholders’ engagement and ownership in improving the design of the system.

VVS: Fast Similarity Measuring of FoV-Tagged Videos

In this article, we propose a novel method that can measure the similarity of FoV-tagged videos in two dimensions. Recently many researchers have focused on measuring the similarity of FoV-tagged videos. The similarity measurement of FoV-tagged videos plays an important role in various societal applications, including urban road networks, traffic, and geographic information systems. Our preliminary work introduced the Largest Common View Subsequences (LCVS) algorithm for computing the similarity of FoV-tagged videos. However, LCVS requires a high computational cost for calculating common viewable regions between two FoV-tagged videos. To handle this limitation, we propose the largest View Vector Subsequence (VVS) algorithm for reducing the computational cost of FoV-tagged videos. VVS uses the movement distances and the viewable direction distances to support the simplified vector-based similarity measurement. We demonstrate the superiority of our approach by comparing it with the Longest Common Subsequences (LCSS) and our prior work (LCVS). Our experimental results show that VVS outperforms the prior work in terms of the computational cost and enhances the versatility and stability of the similarity measurement.

DEVELOPMENT OF WEBGIS BASED REAL TIME ROAD TRAFFIC INFORMATION SYSTEM

Abstract. Rapid increase in road traffic density results into a serious problem of Traffic Congestion (TC) in cities. During peaks hours TC is very high and hence public search least congested path for their journeys in order to minimize ravel time and hence transportation cost. In this study, a new empirical model was developed to estimate congestion levels using real time road Traffic Parameters (TPs) such as vehicle density, speed, class and vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) gap. These real time road TPs were collected using latest generation Inductive Loop Detector (ILD) technology. Further, a WebGIS based Road Traffic Information System (RTIS) for Dehradun city was developed for real time TD analyses and visualisation. This RTIS is very useful for public and user departments for planning and decision making processes. No other such system is available in India, which handles multiple traffic parameters simultaneously to provide solution of day-to-day problems.

Evaluation of possibilities for the climatic distribution of regions from the point of view of road construction

Seeking to reduce a negative impact of unfavourable weather conditions on road traffic, many countries introduce modern technologies allowing to objectively assessing meteorological conditions of roads. The world over, data from the automated meteorological stations of Road Weather Information System have been long ago used on a significantly larger scale than only for the organization of road maintenance works. International experience of introducing Road Traffic Information Systems in European Union and other countries of the world shows that Road Weather Information Systems give good results for increasing road safety, improving the level of road user information and solving the road construction issues. Road Weather Information System is a system of technologies and decision-making using historical and real-time data of roads and weather conditions. The collected and processed multi-year data from meteorological stations is a great assistance in designing or reconstructing road pavement structures. Road pavement structure is highly affected by a negative air temperature and frozen ground. The impact of negative temperature is expressed by the thickness of frost blanket course. The thickness of frost blanket course depends on a frost susceptibility of soil. To determine the thickness of frost blanket course it is necessary to assess the frost impact, therefore it was up to the purpose − climatic distribution of regions the territory of Lithuania according to the distribution of frost impact and the depth of frozen ground. Based on climatic maps compiled, a correction of the thickness of road pavement structure was suggested.

Geographical information system (GIS)–based analysis of road traffic accidents in Nigeria (1960-2012)

In recent years there has been serious concern on the increasing rate of road traffic accidents in Nigeria. Geographic Information System (GIS), a high performance computer based tool is useful in road traffic management and vehicular movement study. In this work, the GIS software was used to analyze and depicts the trend and characteristics of road traffic accidents in Nigeria. The data used in this study were obtained from Federal Road Safety Commission Dashboard (FRSC Planning Advisory Unit Analysis) for the year 2012 and 2013 and Nigerian Tribune Publication of Tuesday 3 rd April , 2012. The data obtained was entered and use to developed road traffic accidents information system (RTAIS). Analysis and capability of the developed system was illustrated and shown graphically. A total of 1,060,507 cases of road traffic crashes occurred between the year 1960 and 2012 of which 170,844 were fatal, 456,055 were serious and 428.790 were minor, claiming 322,427 lives. This study further revealed that Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja ranked first with 6.71% based on road traffic crash fatalities per 100,000 human populations on state by state with Kebbi state being the least (0.25%). The GIS –based analysis shows that category of vehicles involved in road traffic crashes in year 2012 on state basis varies with cars having the highest cases(4,632) followed by buses (2,239), motorcycles (1,807),truck(1,037) and tankers/trailers having the least(641). It is recommended that the Nigerian Police Force (NPF), Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO) and other agencies linked with road traffic management and safety will find this study useful in identifying remedial measures for the improvement of safety on Nigerian roads. Neuromorphic Sensor Network Platform: A Bioinspired Tool to Grow Applications in Wireless Sensor Networks

Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) must face the challenge of producing a vast plethora of applications from the least possible number of distributed sensors. In this paper we describe the Neuromorphic Sensor Network (NSN) platform, which implements a bioinspired approach to the development of growing applications in WSNs. NSNs follow an analogy with the neurophysiology of vertebrates, compressing the information coming from sets of sensors in wireless nodes and processing it by means of a set of processing units (PUs) that perform individual general purpose functions. Applications are then constructed through specific connections of these PUs, generating application pathways that allow the reuse of the same distributed NSN to give response to any desired output, thus achieving an application scalability. We illustrate the detailed process of growing applications using the NSN platform through an object tracking tool that mimics the behavior of the vertebrates visual system to detect and track objects. Finally, we describe a real implementation of the NSN platform in a road traffic monitoring and information system currently in operation in the cities of Madrid and Seville (Spain).

Estimation of Electric Vehicle's Crusing Range Based on Real-Time Links Average Speed

For the reasons of relative short cruising range and insufficient charging facilities, the use and promotion of electric vehicles (EV) is restricted. The estimation of cruising range is important for the EV drivers when selecting the travel route. Energy consumption for different running status is the prerequisite for estimation of cruising range. In this study, an energy consumption factor model is established, which is characterized with reflecting the impact of frequent acceleration and deceleration of urban road, and the input parameter is easily obtained from usual road traffic information system. The results show that the proposed model can predict energy consumption with high accuracy. Then based on real-time links average travel speed, this paper proposes a method of estimating the cruising range when EV travels on a planned route according to drivers demand.

Optimal transmission ranges for mobile communication in linear multihop packet radio networks

The analysis of multihop radio transmission for randomly distributed terminals in the plane has drawn a lot of attention in the literature. Several routing strategies have been investigated concerning throughput and normalized expected progress. Because of mathematically intractable problems all analyses use simulation studies as part of the derivation. In this paper we present a one-dimensional model to investigate the performance of multihop networks. This model seems to be more adequate for applications in road traffic information systems. Three routing strategies 'most forward with fixed transmission range', 'positively most forward with fixed transmission range', and 'positively most forward with variable transmission range' are analyzed on the basis of a complete mathematical description. We also consider directional antennas. The results are presented in closed formulae which are evaluated numerically and depicted in corresponding diagrams. It turns out that adjusted transmission ranges enlarge network performance. Furthermore, some interesting differences to the usual two-dimensional random model occur.

Analyzing routing strategy NFP in multihop packet radio networks on a line

Presents a one-dimensional model to analyze routing strategy NFP (nearest with forward progress) for a multihop packet radio network. It is assumed that each station has adjustable transmission range to address target nodes, distributed on a line according to a nonhomogeneous Poisson process. NFP transmits to the nearest neighbor in the desired direction with transmission range as small as possible, to minimize the probability of collisions. This model is appropriate e.g. for road traffic information systems. The analysis is based on a complete mathematical description, the solution of certain differential equations is one of the key points to arrive at a closed form solution. Results are presented. In this paper a procedure for designing system architectures for innovative road traffic information and control systems is presented and illustrated using dynamic route guidance as an application example. It is shown that the design procedure starts with a top down functional analysis by which basic subfunctions and the relevant architectural elements are identified. On the basis of this analysis a synthesis procedure is outlined using suitable tools from formal description techniques.
