Effects of transient flow conditions on colloid-facilitated release of decabromodiphenyl ether: Implications for contaminant mobility at e-waste recycling sites

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are ubiquitous contaminants, especially in the soil and groundwater of contaminated sites and landfills. Notably, 2,2′,3,3′,4,4′,5,5′,6,6′-decabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-209), one of the most frequently and abundantly detected PBDE congeners in the environment, has recently been designated as a new pollutant subject to rigorous control in China. Colloid-facilitated transport is a key mechanism for the release of PBDEs from surface soils and their migration in the aquifer, but the effects of hydrodynamic conditions, particularly transient flow, on colloid-facilitated release of PBDEs are not well understood. Herein, we examined the effects of typical transient flow conditions on the release characteristics of colloids and BDE-209 from surface soil collected from an e-waste recycling site ​by undisturbed soil-core leaching tests involving multiple dry–wet cycles (with different drying durations) and freeze–thaw cycles. We observed significant positive correlations between BDE-209 and colloid concentrations in the leachate in both the dry–wet and freeze–thaw leaching experiments, highlighting the critical role of colloids in facilitating BDE-209 release. However, colloids mobilized during the dry–wet cycles contained higher contents of BDE-209 than those in the freeze–thaw cycle tests, and the difference was primarily due to the more intensive disintegration of soil aggregates and elution of newly formed inorganic colloidal particles (mainly primary silicate minerals such as quartz and albite) with low BDE-209 content during the freeze–thaw process. These findings underscore the necessity of considering transient flow conditions when assessing the fate and risks of PBDEs at contaminated sites.

Spatial distribution, source, and ecological risk of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and hexabromocyclododecanes (HBCDs) in Jiaozhou Bay, China

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and hexabromocyclododecanes (HBCDs) are commonly found in the environment as components of brominated flame retardants. Due to their potential impact on human health and wildlife, it is imperative to closely monitor and manage their levels in the environment. This study investigated the spatial distribution, sources, and ecological risks of PBDEs and HBCDs in Jiaozhou Bay (JZB), a large bay situated on the eastern coast of China. The results showed that PBDE concentrations ranged from not detected (ND) to 7.93 ng/L in the water and ND to 65.76 ng/g in the sediment, while HBCD concentrations ranged from ND to 0.31 ng/L in the water and ND to 16.63 ng/g in the sediment. Furthermore, we observed significantly higher concentrations of PBDEs and HBCDs in the inner JZB compared to the outer JZB. Our source apportionment analysis showed that PBDEs primarily originated from the production and debromination of BDE-209, as well as the emission of commercial PeBDEs, whereas HBCDs in sediments mostly stemmed from anthropogenic activities and river input. Finally, our eco-logical risk assessment highlighted the need for continuous monitoring of PBDEs in JZB sediments. Overall, our study aims to provide valuable assistance for the environmental management of the JZB bay area, which is characterized by a complex net-work of rivers and a thriving economy.

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers in water, suspended particulate matter, and sediment of reservoirs and their tributaries in Shenzhen, a mega city in South China.

Urban reservoirs serve many purposes including recreation and drinking water, and larger bodies of water can alter the surrounding air temperatures, making urban areas cooler in summer and warmer in winter. However, reservoirs may also be sinks for contaminants. One such group of contaminants, the polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), are persistent organic pollutants known to accumulate in sediments and suspended particulate matter (SPM). Few studies have been conducted on PBDEs in water, SPM, and sediment from reservoirs of Shenzhen which is a mega city in South China. To this end, 12 PBDEs were measured in water, SPM, and sediment samples during the dry season (DS) and wet season (WS), to explain the spatiotemporal distribution, congener profiles, sources, and risks of pollutants in four reservoirs (A-D) and their tributaries in the study region. The concentration of ∑12PBDEs during the DS was found to be significantly higher than that during the WS. Source apportionment suggested that commercial penta-, octa-, and deca-BDEs are the major components of PBDEs, resulting mainly from atmospheric deposition, wastewater discharge, and external water-diversion projects. Further, attention should be paid to electronic equipment manufacturing factories in the study area. Risk assessment indicated risk of PBDEs (especially BDE-209) in sediment and SPM to be of concern. This study provides important data support for the control of PBDEs in natural drinking water sources.

Rapid screening of polybrominated diphenyl ethers in water by solid-phase microextraction coupled with ultrahigh-resolution mass spectrometry.

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are considered emerging organic contaminants that attract more attention in the environment. Herein, online coupling of solid-phase microextraction and ultrahigh-resolution mass spectrometry was developed for rapid screening of eight PBDEs in water samples. This procedure was completed in 22min, about 6 times faster than the routine workflow such as solid-phase extraction coupled with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Thermal desorption and solvent-assisted atmospheric pressure chemical ionization were developed for the effective coupling of solid-phase microextraction (SPME) with ultrahigh-resolution mass spectrometry (UHRMS), which contributed to the signal enhancement and made the methodology feasible for environmental screening. The limits of detection and quantification were 0.01-0.50ng/mL and 0.05-4.00ng/mL, respectively. The recoveries were 57.2-75.2% for quality control samples at spiking levels of 0.8-10ng/mL (4-50ng/mL for BDE209), with relative standard deviation less than 19.0%. Twelve water samples from different river sites near industrial areas were screened using the developed method. The results showed that BDE-209 was the dominant PBDE (1.02-1.28ng/mL in positive samples), but its amount was lower than the human health ambient water quality criteria. Consequently, the developed method provides a rapid and reliable way of evaluating contamination status and risks of PBDEs in aqueous environment.

Exposure evaluation and risk assessment of polybrominated diphenyl ethers in dust from microenvironments in Nsukka, Nigeria.

The health risks of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) to toddlers, children, and adults in creches, nursery schools, cars, and offices in Nsukka, Nigeria, via inhalation, ingestion, and dermal exposure pathways were evaluated. Eight PBDEs congeners (BDE-28, BDE-47, BDE-100, BDE-99, BDE-154, BDE-153, BDE-183, and BDE-209) were determined using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. This is the first study on PBDEs in creches and nursery schools in Africa. The mean (median) ∑8PBDEs (ng/g) in creches, nursery schools, offices, and cars were 4355 (1850), 2095 (1130), and 37741 (2620) respectively. The concentrations of PBDEs between the three microenvironments were significantly different (p ˂ 0.05), and the highest concentration was found in cars. Ingestion of dust was the predominant pathway of exposure to PBDEs for toddlers and children, while dermal absorption was the dominant pathway for adults. Dermal absorption and ingestion in cars, creches, and nursery schools were of the same magnitude. Toddlers with the highest ingestion rate of PBDEs in creches, nursery schools, and cars are at risk especially from prolonged exposure.

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers in surface sediments from fishing ports along the coast of Bohai Sea, China

The distribution, congener patterns, possible sources, and ecological risks of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) were investigated in the surface sediments of 20 fishing ports along the coast of Bohai Sea. PBDEs are widespread pollutants in fishing ports, and the total concentrations of 14 PBDEs (∑14PBDEs) are 4.23–20.59 ng/g with a mean value of 12.56 ng/g. BDE-209 was the dominant congener. The fishing ports with high PBDE concentrations were located near Liaohe River, Haihe River, manufacturing plants of BFRs near Laizhou Bay, and tipping areas of marine garbage. BDE-209 and BDE-47 were the most important congeners that discriminate PBDE pollution. The possible sources of PBDEs included the input of commercial mixtures of penta-BDE, octa-BDE, and deca-BDE, the debromination of BDE-209, and the atmospheric transport of the low brominated diphenyl ethers. The ecological risks in surface sediments were attributed to the congeners of tetra-BDE, penta-BDE, and deca-BDE with low or medium levels.

Global distribution and trends of polybrominated diphenyl ethers in human blood and breast milk: A quantitative meta-analysis of studies published in the period 2000–2019

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are a class of flame-retardants that are found throughout the human body. However, global trends and diversity of the concentrations in human body and the potential risks remain largely unresolved. Based on published data during 2000–2019, we conducted a systematic meta-analysis to understand the burden and risks of PBDEs in humans and their spatiotemporal variations. The report provides a global picture of PBDE concentrations in human blood and breast milk. We found the levels of body PBDE burden in the North American population were higher than those from Asia and Europe. However, high concentrations of blood PBDEs in occupational population from Asia were observed, largely because of poorly controlled e-waste recycling operations. Penta- and deca-BDE were the main contributors in North America and Asia, respectively, reflecting the difference in the production and use of these chemicals. On a global scale, no substantial decreases in the concentrations of PBDEs in the blood and breast milk were observed, although most of the chemicals have been phased out. The results suggested that humans will be exposed to PBDEs with relatively high concentrations in a certain period because of the legacy in products and the environmental media. And the potential health risks necessitate careful study in the future. Our results also remind that the uses of degradation-resistant chemicals should be attached great importance to their safety.

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers in indoor and outdoor dust from Southeast Asia: An updated review on contamination status, human exposure, and future perspectives.

Contamination status, potential emission sources, environmental fate, and human exposure risk of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are reviewed for indoor and outdoor dust from Southeast Asian countries, under an international comparison point of view. PBDEs have been widely detected in house, workplace, car, and road dust samples collected from Indonesia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. The highest PBDE levels up to hundreds of μg/g were found in settled dust from some e-waste processing areas in Thailand and Vietnam. Concentrations of PBDEs in house, car, and road dust from this region were generally lower than those reported in China and Western developed countries. BDE-209 was the most predominant congener in almost all analyzed samples, reflecting the widespread application of materials and products treated with commercial deca-BDE mixtures in this region. The market demand and application rate of commercial PBDE mixtures in Southeast Asia were lower than those documented for other regions in the world. As a result, PBDE contamination levels in the environments (e.g., indoor and outdoor dust) and associated risks in these countries were not significantly high. However, more attention should be paid to informal processing activities and management strategies for modern wastes such as e-waste, plastics, and end-of-life vehicles. There exist several knowledge gaps about spatiotemporal trends, potential sources, risk assessment, inventory, management, and legislation regarding PBDEs in dust from this region, which should be filled by additional comprehensive, detailed studies with relevant inter-country/regional monitoring schemes.

Concentration profile, spatial distributions and temporal trends of polybrominated diphenyl ethers in sediments across China: Implications for risk assessment

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in sediments of China have been extensively investigated; however, most studies conducted to date have focused on specific locations, and the pollution and risk posed by these chemicals in sediments at the national scale remain unknown. Therefore, we analyzed the concentrations and risks of PBDEs in sediments in China and their spatiotemporal variations based on available literature. Overall, the sediments across China contain moderate to high levels of PBDEs, with BDE-209 being the dominant congener, followed by BDE-47 and BDE-99. The sediment concentrations of PBDEs were highest in southern China and lowest in northeastern China. Additionally, based on their PBDE concentrations, 18.4%, 30.0%, and 11.9% of sediment samples from rivers, lakes, and coastal waters, respectively, posed low to moderate eco-toxicological risks, but 6.90% of river sediments posed high risks. Between 2001 and 2017, the concentrations and risks of PBDEs in the sediments from rivers and coastal waters tended to decrease gradually. Additionally, there were low to moderate risks from PBDEs in lake sediments, and the risks in 2012–2017 were 3.30 times higher than those in 2006–2011. However, more studies about the spatial and temporal trends in PBDEs in sediment across China and their impacts on aquatic organisms are needed because there is still a general lack of relevant information.

Trophic transfer of polybrominated diphenyl ethers in a recently modified freshwater food web from the St. Lawrence River, Canada

Introduction of invasive species can have a profound impact on food web structure and therefore on trophic transfer of contaminants. In the St. Lawrence River (Canada), 20 years after its first detection in the system, invasive round goby (Neogobius melanostomus) has become the main prey for several piscivorous species. To evaluate the accumulation, trophic transfer, and the ecological risk of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in this recently modified freshwater food web, samples of sediment, invertebrates, fish and aquatic bird eggs and plasma were collected. Sampling sites were located upstream and at two locations downstream of the Montreal wastewater treatment plant outfall. The results suggest that the influence of the WWTP effluent on PBDEs concentrations varied among the various compartments of this recently modified freshwater food web. The results also suggest that although predatory fish have switched to consuming round goby as a prey item instead of native yellow perch, this new feeding behaviour is not expected to have important impacts on the level of transfer of PBDE within this food web. The biota-sediment accumulation factors (BSAFs) ranged from 0.6 to 436, whereas biomagnification factors (BMFs) varied between 0.2 and 475. Despite our conservative method of risk assessment, we calculated an important risk for piscivorous fish and gull eggs within this study area.

Spatial distribution, source analysis, and ecological risk assessment of PBDEs in river sediment around Taihu Lake, China.

The distribution and composition of organic pollutants in sediment are affected by the source and regional environment. To understand the characteristics and risk of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in the area around Taihu Lake, composite sediment samples (n = 41) were collected in rivers around Taihu Lake to explore the level, spatial distribution, and source of PBDEs. The results showed that the most abundant BDE congener in river sediment was BDE209, followed by BDE99 and BDE47, with median values of 48.7, 2.17, and 1.52ngg-1, respectively. Concentrations of PBDEs in sediments from northern rivers were significantly higher than those from other areas, but the overall risk was at a moderate-lower level compared with research results in other references. Results of principle component analysis (PCA) and source characteristics analysis revealed that most of PBDEs in river sediments around Taihu Lake were mixture of multiple sources, which mainly originated from atmospheric deposition, industrial wastewater, and municipal sewage. TOC showed good correlations with most PBDEs, which implied that PBDE components were influenced by sediment organic matter. Meanwhile, the risk of PBDEs in river sediments in this study area is a moderate-lower level.

First report on polybrominated diphenyl ethers in the Iranian Coral Islands: Concentrations, profiles, source apportionment, and ecological risk assessment

Coral reefs are challenged by multiple stressors due to the growing industrialization. Despite that, data on their environment are still scarce, and no research is yet performed on polybrominated diphenyl ethers in the Persian Gulf area. Seeking to fill in this gap, the present study aims to determine spatio-vertical distributions, source apportionment and ecological risk of polybrominated diphenyl ethers in the sediment cores and seawater samples from ten coral reef Islands in the Persian Gulf, Iran. Σ12PBDEs concentrations ranged from 0.42 ± 0.04 to 47.14 ± 1.35 ng g−1 dw in sediments, and from 1.17 ± 0.06 to 7.21 ± 1.13 ng L−1 in seawater. The vertical polybrominated diphenyl ethers distribution varied significantly among the sampling stations and different depths with a decreasing trend towards the surface and peaks around 12–20 cm. Both in the seawater and sediment samples, elevated polybrominated diphenyl ethers loadings were observed in highly industrialized areas. Deca-bromodiphenyl ether-209 was the predominant congener along the sediment cores, whereas Tetra-bromodiphenyl ether-47 and Penta-bromodiphenyl ether-100 dominated in seawater samples. Commercial Deca-bromodiphenyl ether mixture was found to be the major source of polybrominated diphenyl ethers. Penta-bromodiphenyl ether was revealed to be the major ecological risk driver in the study area: it posed medium to high-risk quotient to sediment dwelling organisms. This study indicated that coral reefs are playing an important role in retaining polybrominated diphenyl ethers and highlighted the need to manage polybrominated diphenyl ethers contamination in the coral reef environment.

Understanding the role of bacterial cellular adsorption, accumulation and bioavailability regulation by biosurfactant in affecting biodegradation efficacy of polybrominated diphenyl ethers

Microbiological degradation is often considered as an important strategy to reduce the risks of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), which are environmentally widespread and harmful to human health and wildlife. With the well-identified aerobic bacteria, i.e. B. xenovorans LB400, the biodegradation of 2,2′,4,4′-tetrabrominated diphenyl ether (BDE-47) occurred efficiently in conformity to the first-order kinetics and showed the strong dependence on initial concentration of pollutant and bioavailability regulation by biosurfactant. The mild increase of initial concentration of BDE-47 would enhance biodegradation whereas the excessive increase failed due to the oxidative stress or cytotoxicity to bacteria. Rather than the bacterial extracellular adsorption that was bioactively-mediated in thermodynamics, the intracellular accumulations at different time gradients showed the negative correlation with biodegradation efficiency of BDE-47. The spontaneous biodegradation of pollutant should be sourced from the gradual reduction of intracellular accumulation. Though the improved bioavailability of BDE-47 by sucrose fatty acid ester (SFAE) hardly altered the extracellular adsorption, the bacterial intracellular accumulation was indicated to increase continuously with used amount of biosurfactant and then decrease for the cellular morphological damage, and interestingly it appeared to be temporary reservoir for prompt delivery to biodegradation in light of the opposite variation tendency with time.

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers and polychlorinated biphenyls in mangrove sediments of Shantou, China: Occurrence, profiles, depth-distribution, and risk assessment

Surface and columnar sediments were collected from four mangrove Wetlands in Shantou coastal areas of South China to investigate the level, distribution, possible sources and ecotoxicological risks of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). Total concentration of 14 PBDEs (∑14PBDEs) and 41 PCBs (∑41PCBs) varied from 0.61 to 180 ng/g and 42–636 pg/g dry weight (dw) in surface sediments, respectively. The concentration of PBDEs was much higher than that of PCBs. Compared with other mangrove Wetlands around the world, PCBs levels in the studied area were relatively low, while the concentrations of PBDE were at higher level. Decabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-209) was the predominant PBDEs homologue in all sediment samples, indicating the extensive use of deca-BDE in this area. Penta-CBs and hexa-CBs were the main homologues of PCBs. Spatial variations showed that the concentration of PBDEs might be mainly affected by anthropogenic activities in specific sites of this region, whereas dry and wet deposition might be an important input source of PCBs in this area. Although accurate sediment chronology was not available, higher concentrations of PBDEs and PCBs were still found in some deeper sediment layers, suggesting that new input quantity tends to decrease with the increase of control. Risk assessment showed that penta-BDEs and deca-BDE may have potential negative ecological effects on the ecological of Shantou mangrove sediments, while the effects of PCBs can be neglected.

Contamination and ecological risk of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in surface sediments of mangrove wetlands: A nationwide study in China

Mangroves act as sinks for terrigenous pollutants to alleviate their influence on offshore marine ecosystem. The nationwide study of PBDEs contamination in mangrove wetlands of China has not been explored, and their risk for human health lack quantitative analysis. In this study, sediment samples were collected in six mangrove wetlands along coastal area of South China to evaluate the levels, congener distributions and ecological risks of eight PBDEs, including BDE-28, -47, −99, −100, −153, −154, −183, and −209. Levels of ∑PBDEs (the sum of seven PBDEs except BDE-209) and BDE-209 were 0.13–2.18 ng g−1 and 1.44–120.28 ng g−1, respectively. In particular, mean level of BDE-209 was highest in Futian, followed by Yunxiao, Fangchenggang, Zhanjiang, Dongzhaigang, and Dongfang. As dominant PBDE congener, BDE-209 accounted for 63.6%–99.1% of the total PBDEs, suggesting the major sources of commercial deca-BDE mixtures. Among seven PBDE congeners except BDE-209, slightly different percentages of PBDE congeners were detected, with BDE-154, -47, and −100 being predominant congeners. Positive relationship was observed for total organic matter (TOM) with BDE-209, with no such relationships found for particle size compositions (clay, silt and sand). As for sediment-dwelling organism, the ecological risks from tri-, tera-, and hexa-BDE congeners could be negligible, and those from penta- and deca-BDE congeners were low or moderate, indicating major ecological risk drivers of penta- and deca-BDE congeners in mangrove wetlands in China. The ecological risk of PBDEs in mangrove sediments for human health was thought to be consumption of fish which would bioaccumulate PBDEs from the contaminated sediment. As for human health, the levels of non-cancer risks of PBDEs were all lower than 1, and the cancer risk was far less than the threshold level (10−6), demonstrating low risk for human health.

Occurrence of PBDEs in surface sediments of metropolitan rivers: Sources, distribution pattern, and risk assessment

Sources, concentrations, and ecological risk of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) were investigated in surface sediments from 33 stations in Danshui River basin (Taiwan) in 2015. High spatial variation in total PBDEs (Σ19PBDEs) in sediments was found ranging from 2.3 to 10,490 ng g−1 dw. The effects of the physicochemical characteristics, total organic carbons (TOC) and grain size of sediments on the levels and distributions of PBDEs were investigated. Significant linear correlations were observed for PBDE concentrations with TOC (r2 = 0.45, p < 0.01) and fine sediment fraction (grain size <1 mm; r2 = 0.2, p < 0.05). Spatial distributions of Σ19PBDEs showed that sediment samples were likely impacted by point source inputs. BDE209 was the dominant congener, accounting for 77.5%–99.9% of the Σ19PBDEs in sediments suggested that commercial deca-BDE mixtures are the major sources of PBDEs in Danshui River basin. Regarding ecological risk estimation, high molecular PBDEs pose a high risk quotient (RQ > 1) to sediment dwelling organism along the 33 sampling stations, suggesting that penta-BDEs and deca-BDE are the major ecological risk drivers in the Danshui River basin.

Levels, dietary intake and risk of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in foods commonly consumed in Nigeria

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers are non-reactive flame retardants listed among the persistent organic pollutants. This study assesses the levels and health risk of PBDEs in foods commonly consumed by the adult population in Southwest Nigeria. Eight different food categories were collected and extracted using standard QuEChERS protocol prior to analysis by gas chromatography with micro electron capture detector. Aquatic foods had the highest maximum concentration of the eight PBDEs congeners, 748 pg/g; followed by 80.3 pg/g and 54.9 pg/g in edible oil and meat products, respectively. Dairy products had the lowest concentration (0.46 pg/g). The estimated average dietary intake of PBDEs by an adult was 131 pg/kg bw/day. Based on the levels of PBDEs found in common foods consumed by the adult population in Southwest Nigeria, there is unlikely to be a health risk. However, there is a need to investigate the dietary intake of PBDEs in other food categories, especially by vulnerable groups, such as children and the elderly.

Distribution, accumulation, and potential risk of polybrominated diphenyl ethers in the marine environment receiving effluents from a sewage treatment plant

We investigated the effect of sewage treatment plant effluent on the distribution and accumulation of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in the marine environment. PBDEs concentrations in seawater and surface sediments were within the ranges 1.58–6.94 ng/L and 2.18–307 ng/g dw, respectively. PBDE concentrations in sediments gradually decreased with increasing distance from inner bay including the sewage outfall. The contribution of effluent to PBDE distributions was very limited. The concentrations of PBDEs in sediment core decreased exponentially with increasing depth. PBDE concentrations in oysters were 4.7–37 ng/g lw. BDE-209 was the dominant congener in marine environmental samples receiving effluent. Estimated dietary exposures of PBDEs by seafood were 0.01–0.08 ng/kg body weight/day, which were more than six orders of magnitude lower than the reported levels of PBDEs with the no observable adverse effects. Hazard quotients demonstrated that, at present, PBDEs posed no potential risk to benthic organisms in the study area.

Bioaccumulation of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in sediment aged for 2 years to carps (Cyprinus carpio)

In order to understand the risk of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) existing in sediment for years, the accumulation of PBDEs in sediment aged for 2 years to fish was investigated. Simulated aquatic system microcosms were conducted with PBDE contaminated sediment aged for 2 years and carps were cultured in the microcosms for 20 days. PBDE concentrations in carp tissues were analyzed to estimate the bioavailability of aged PBDEs in carps. The main spiked PBDE congeners were detected in sediment even though the contaminated sediment was aged for 2 years. Similarly, the five PBDE (BDE-28, 47, 100, 153 and 154) congeners which probably were bioaccumulated by carp were detected in fish tissues, indicating that PBDEs could be bioaccumulated after aging for 2 years. The PBDEs distribution revealed that the concentrations of polybrominated diphenyl ethers in tissues of Cyprinus carpio is in this order of magnitude: gut > liver > gill > fillet. The PBDEs concentrations in fillet were as high as 67.9 ng/g dry wt, in which BDE-47 contributed almost 50% in profile.

Historical trends and ecological risks of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and alternative halogenated flame retardants (AHFRs) in a mangrove in South China

While the production of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) was gradually phased out in the last decade, they may still pose hidden danger to the environment due to their toxicity and persistence. On the other hand, alternative halogenated flame retardants (AHFRs) have been increasingly used as substitutes for PBDEs and may further worsen environmental health. To determine the environmental impact of PBDEs and AHFRs, we examined the historical trends and ecological risks of PBDEs and AHFRs in a typical industrialized city in South China by measuring their concentrations in mangrove sediment. Results showed that the concentrations of PBDEs increased abruptly from 1997 to 2009 due to the use of commercial deca-BDE mixture, but were stabilized in recent years. The concentrations of AHFRs, mainly contributed by decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE), kept increasing from 1997 onwards. Based on the temporal trends, DBDPE is predicted to be predominant over BDE 209 in future. Despite the observed similar concentration between BDE 209 and DBDPE, the former posed a high ecological risk, while the ecological risk of the latter was negligible. Therefore, more attention is required to manage the contamination of BDE 209 in the environment.
