Longevity of risks in software development projects: a comparative analysis with an academic environment

The study presented in this paper was developed in an academic environment. All subjects involved in this research are enrolled in the Information Systems Master’s Degree of the University of Minho. The main objective of this study is to demonstrate the need for the continuity of studies about the risks presented in software development projects. For this purpose, we analyzed more than four hundred risks and about one hundred problems faced and documented by the working groups. With the collected data we defined a list of twenty risks and conducted a comparative study of these risks with others already formalized in previous industrial studies. The comparison data was analyzed and interpreted, and important conclusions were made.

A Risk Management Tool for Agile Software Development

ABSTRACT Lack of risk management or its inadequate application is one reason that software development projects fail. Agile methods, which have become increasingly popular, do not offer specific activities to manage risks. We develop and evaluate a tool for managing risks in software development projects that use agile methods. The proposed tool provides a collection of risk management practices and an iterative lifecycle. To analyze the effectiveness of the proposed tool we conducted an experiment with the participation of experts in agile methods. Our tool increased the effectiveness of risk response planning without increasing the time invested in this process.

Short term Predication of Risk Management Integrating Artificial Neural Network ANN

The IT industry has boomed in the past few years with an ever increasing number of risk management applications being developed. There are inherent risks in software development projects and failure to deliver software projects within deadline or failure to develop software according to specifications can be costly. The software risks may occur during the project process. The management process of software risks consists the risk refinement, risk identification, risk monitoring, risk maintenance, risk estimation and risk mitigation. Neural Network has ability to stimulate hidden pattern recognition skill. The primary study of this paper is to focus on various risk management models and how risk tools may help in mitigating software risks during the project development. With the application of Neural Network, We propose short term risk management model which can predict the risk involvement with the upcoming project risks, analyzing from the previous projects causing serious loss in the IT project in terms of values on certain risk factors. Neural Network model can also ability to evaluate the assessment of risks in software development and acts as an effective instrument in analysis and minimizing risks that enable continuous improvement in software processes and products.

Risk Factors for Software Requirements Change Implementation

Requirements change has been regarded as a substantial risk in software development projects. The factors that contribute to the risk are identified through impact analysis, which later determine the planning of the change implementation. The analysis is however not straightforward as the risk factors that constitute requirements change implementation is currently not much explored. This paper identifies the risk factors by firstly collating them qualitatively through a review of related work and a focus group study. The factors are then confirmed quantitatively through a survey in which data is analysed by using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM). The survey comprise of 276 practitioners from software industry who are involved in the impact analysis. The results indicate that User, Project Team, Top Management, Third Party, Organisation, Identification of Change, Existing Product and Planning of Change Implementation are the significant risk factors in planning of requirements change implementation.

Quantitative and Intelligent Risk Models in Risk Management for Constructing Software Development Projects: A Review

Techniques and models for mitigating risk in software development projects classified into three categories–namely, qualitative, quantitative, and intelligent approaches. This paper is to review the quantitative and intelligent risk models in software risk management for software development projects. Indeed, this area needs more effort from scholars and researchers in quantitative and intelligent risk models to mitigate risks. As future work, we will use these hybrid models of quantitative and intelligent for mitigating software risks in cloud computing such as neural network, genetic algorithm and others artificial intelligence techniques.

Risk mitigation strategies for software development projects: Professional perspectives

The success of software development projects relies on how risks are managed. There is a lack of understanding on the effectiveness of risk mitigating strategies for managing software development projects. In a questionnaire survey conducted among 324 IT professionals, the effectiveness of risk management strategies was explored. The statistical method of variance technique (ANOVA) was used to analyse risk mitigation strategies in terms of their effectiveness in reducing time and cost overruns. Findings reveal that risk mitigation strategies related to the technical part are not as efficient as that in the managerial part such as the users’ involvement and commitment in reducing time and cost overruns. Results from this study could help increase the chances of success, achieve project cost and time objectives, and reduce project risks in software development projects. Software Development Project Risk Management: A New Conceptual Framework

The frequently observed positive impact of adopting risk management strategies on projects’ overall outcome has led many software development organizations to appreciate its significant role in the pursuit of cost reduction, schedule overruns decrease and, generally, improved performance. In line with this issue, this study investigates a wide range of relevant literature, proposes a new conceptual framework for managing risk in software development projects, introduces new conceptual factors, brings out their interrelation, and suggests new prospects and managerial implications for both practitioners and academics. The conceptual framework has two basic axes. Firstly, the determination of the impact of constructs such as Project Characteristics, Project Risk Management Team, Risk Identification Approaches, and Project Quality on the level of Project Risk. The majority of the items used to measure these constructs are proposed for the first time in the literature. Additionally, the assessment of the impact of Project Risk (and all of the dimensions that compose it), simultaneously with the estimation of the impact of the Residual Performance Risk on the final subjective and objective Project Performance could provide project managers with a better picture of the effectiveness and adequacy of their risk management practices.

Managing risk in software development projects: a case study

PurposeThe main objective of the paper is to develop a risk management framework for software development projects from developers' perspective.Design/methodology/approachThis study uses a combined qualitative and quantitative technique with the active involvement of stakeholders in order to identify, analyze and respond to risks. The entire methodology has been explained using a case study on software development project in a public sector organization in Barbados.FindingsAnalytical approach to managing risk in software development ensures effective delivery of projects to clients.Research limitations/implicationsThe proposed risk management framework has been applied to a single case.Practical implicationsSoftware development projects are characterized by technical complexity, market and financial uncertainties and competent manpower availability. Therefore, successful project accomplishment depends on addressing those issues throughout the project phases. Effective risk management ensures the success of projects.Originality/valueThere are several studies on managing risks in software development and information technology (IT) projects. Most of the studies identify and prioritize risks through empirical research in order to suggest mitigating measures. Although they are important to clients for future projects, these studies fail to provide any framework for risk management from software developers' perspective. Although a few studies introduced framework of risk management in software development, most of them are presented from clients' perspectives and very little effort has been made to integrate this with the software development cycle. As software developers absorb considerable amount of risks, an integrated framework for managing risks in software development from developers' perspective is needed.

IPTES — Incremental Prototyping Technology for Embedded real-time Systems

The constantly increasing complexity and risk associated with the industrial development of embedded computer systems has been approached in different ways in resent years. One of the most promising approaches to managing risks in software development projects is the Boehm's spiral principle. In ESPRIT project no. EP5570 called IPTES a methodology and a supporting environment to support the Boehm's spiral principles are being developed. The prototyping environment will enable the specification and verification of executable system models so that different parts of the system may represent different modeling levels, and yet they can be executed as a total system.
