Association of carpal tunnel syndrome risk factors with treatment modality selection focusing on corticosteroid injection and surgery: A nationwide population-based study.

Several studies have revealed the risk factors for carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). However, no studies have evaluated the influence of these risk factors on the selection of treatment modalities for CTS. This study aimed to determine the influence of CTS risk factors on the selection of CTS treatment modalities with a focus on corticosteroid injection (CI) and surgery. We conducted a retrospective cohort study of patients aged ≥20 years with newly diagnosed CTS in the Korean health insurance review and assessment service between 2010 and 2019. We evaluated the demographic information, the existence of CTS risk factors, and the applied treatment modalities for CTS, including CI and operation. The CTS risk factors include age, sex, diabetes mellitus, osteoarthritis of the hand or wrist, rheumatoid arthritis, hypothyroidism, gout, chronic kidney disease (CKD) on dialysis, antiestrogen or aromatase inhibitor medication, and a history of distal radius fracture (DRF). Multivariable logistic regression analyses were conducted. Age over 80 years was the most significantly associated factor for the selection of CI in CTS (odd ratio [OR], 2.149; 95% confidence interval [CI], 2.092 to 2.209; P < .001). Among underlying diseases or medications, CKD on dialysis (OR, 4.001; 95% CI, 3.819-4.193; P < .001) was the most significant associated factor for the selection of operation for CTS, followed by a history of DRF (OR, 1.803; 95% CI, 1.749-1.860; P < .001). Old age was the most significantly related factor for selecting CI. Among underlying diseases or medications, CKD on dialysis and the history of DRF were the most significantly related factors for selecting operative treatment. For these patients, clinicians should proactively consider an operation to reduce the long-term discomfort and economic burdens.

A systematic review Risk Factors of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome in Food Industry Workers

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) is a health disorder that occurs due to compression of the median nerve in the carpal tunnel with the main symptoms being tingling and pain in the fingers and hands which are innervated by the median nerve. CTS is a multifactorial disease, involving various risk factors (occupational, non-occupational). CTS is at risk of occurring in various industrial sectors, especially workers in the clothing industry, food and beverage industry, and agriculture who cause repetitive movements or maintain unergonomic work postures. CTS has become the center of attention of researchers because it can cause disability in workers, disrupting work productivity. This study aims to analyze the risk factors for CTS in food industry workers. This type of research is a systematic review that was searched via Google Scholars, PubMed, Cochrane Library, ResearchGate and Science Direct with a publication deadline of the last 5 years. The research results showed that 33 journals contained the topic of CTS risk factors in food industry workers. Based on 33 journals, it was found that the factors that cause Carpal Tunnel Syndrome are divided into occupational and non-occupational risk factors. Occupational risk factors include work duration, non-ergonomic workplace, work experience, repetitive wrist movements, hand position and body posture, and exposure to vibration. Apart from that, non-occupational factors include underlying disease, age, female gender, obesity, smoking. The conclusion of this research is that the risk factors for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) in food industry workers are caused by various things. In general, it consists of occupational and non-occupational risk factors.

Reported Symptoms and Associated Factors of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome in Qassim Region: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Background Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is the most common entrapment neuropathy, occurring through compression of the median nerve as it passes under the transverse carpal ligament. Symptoms include nocturnal pain and paresthesias confined to the thumb, middle, and index fingers. Objective The purpose of this study is to determine the prevalence of CTS symptoms and the associated risk factors in Qassim Province, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Materials and methods A total of 314 participants were recruited from Qassim Province using an online survey, which included demographic questions and the Boston Carpal Tunnel Questionnaire (BCTQ). The association between categorical variables was assessed using the Chi-square test or Fisher's exact test, as appropriate. Additionally, an independent t-test was performed to compare quantitative variables. A p-value of less than 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Result The prevalence of CTS in the Qassim population was found to be 19.7%. The most significant risk factors for CTS were age, chronic illnesses, and employment status (p < 0.001). The most frequently reported symptoms included daytime pain and weakness (82.3%), while obesity emerged as the most prevalent chronic disease (21%). The mean symptom severity score (SSS) was significantly higher for individuals who were awoken from pain (t = -5.89; p < 0.001) and for those who experienced awakening due to numbness and tingling (t = -5.59; p < 0.001). Conclusion According to our sampled cohort, 19.7% of individuals had symptoms of CTS etiology. Multiple risk factors for CTS were identified. Notably, the development of CTS symptoms was significantly associated with individuals aged 50 and older, employment status, and the presence of related chronic diseases.

Electrophysiologic pattern of carpal tunnel syndrome among patients with and without diabetes mellitus

Background: Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is the most common compression neuropathy in the upper limb in general population. Female gender, obesity, increase of age, diabetes mellitus (DM), hypothyroidism, pregnancy, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis and occupational factors like repetitive work are the main risk factors for CTS. The objective of this study was to determine whether the nerve conduction study measurement of the median nerve (MN) at the wrist differ between diabetic and non-diabetic CTS patients. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted at Electrodiagnostic Lab of BIRDEM General Hospital and Popular Medical College Hospital, Dhaka during the period of October 2017 to August 2019. Five hundred and seventeen hands from 377 patients were sampled according to inclusion criteria. Participants were assigned to two groups: Group 1 (CTS with DM) and Group 2 (CTS without DM). NCS study were performed using Nihon Kohden electrodiagnostic machine. Measurements at the MN was taken under consideration for study. Severity of CTS was graded according to Canterbury electrophysiologic grading scale and parameters were compared among diabetic and non-diabetic participants. Data were analyzed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences SPSS version 23 (SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL, USA). Results: The 377 participants comprised 144 and 233 in Group 1 and Group 2, respectively. Out of 377 patients, 334 (88.59%) were females and there was no statistically significant difference between two groups. The average age was 50.66±10.2 years in diabetic participants and 43.34±10.7 years in non- diabetic participants. In the study population moderate CTS (Grade 3) was the most frequent (46.4%) followed by very severe (Grade 5) CTS. There was no statistically significant difference in incidence between diabetic and non-diabetic patients. Analysis of electrophysologic parameters of MN showed statistically significant difference in mean MN sensory nerve action potential (SNAP) amplitude (P 0.003), compound muscle action potential (CMAP) amplitude (p 0.05, right) and CMAP latency (p 0.02, right and 0.05, left) between diabetic and non –diabetic patients. Inter-group comparison revealed that impaired glycaemic status and duration of diabetes in diabetic population had a minimal influence in the electrophysiological severity of CTS in either hands. Conclusion: Some nerve conduction study parameters of the MN differ significantly between diabetic and non-diabetic patients with CTS and may provide both diagnostic and predictive results across the entire spectrum of CTS. Prevalence of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Symptoms Among Young Dentists.

Objectives Although age is a risk factor, carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) can also affect younger individuals, particularly those involved in activities or occupations that require repetitive hand movements, forceful gripping, or prolonged wrist flexion/extension. This case-control study aimed to examine the prevalence of CTS symptoms and frequent object dropping among a group of young dentists who are exposed to CTS risk factors. Additionally, other reported risk factors for CTS, such as sex, obesity, and square wrist sign, were also investigated. Methods A total of 74 dentists (48 women, mean age 28.5 years), who are working at Istanbul Faculty of Dentistry, the largest dental school in Istanbul, which is the biggest city in Turkey, were included in the study. Additionally, 61 age- and sex-matched controls (38 women, mean age 27.9 years) were also recruited. The Edinburgh Hand Preference Questionnaire, Boston Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Questionnaire (BCTQ), a questionnaire for object dropping and occupational hand usage, anthropometric measurements of the hands, clinical neurologic examination, and electromyography intended for the detection of CTS were performed. Results The dentists had a higher total weekly hand usage duration compared to the controls (66.3 vs 44.8 hours, p<0.001). BCTQ scores and the frequency of object dropping were also significantly higher in dentists compared to controls (respective p values: 0.011, 0.003). Positive correlations were found between BCTQ scores, hand usage durations, and object dropping (respective p values: 0.001, <0.001). BCTQ scores were higher in women than in men (p=0.027). Electrophysiologic evidence of CTS was found in one dentist. Conclusions Symptoms of CTS may manifest in individuals at a younger age than predicted, primarily influenced by their occupation and the duration of hand usage. Dentists, in particular, report a higher incidence of complaints related to object dropping, which can be attributed to their frequent use of specialized tools and engagement in delicate tasks, resulting in heightened awareness. However, it can also potentially serve as an indicator of CTS.

An Integrated Review of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome: New Insights to an Old Problem.

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a common entrapment neuropathy characterized by pain, numbness, and impaired function of the hand due to compression of the median nerve at the level of the wrist. Although CTS can develop from repetitive strain, injury, or medical conditions, there are also congenital and genetic risk factors that can predispose individuals to the condition. With respect to anatomical factors, some individuals are born with a smaller carpal tunnel, which increases their susceptibility to median nerve compression. Variations in specific genes, such as those encoding proteins involved in extracellular matrix remodeling, inflammation, and nerve function, have also been linked to an increased risk for CTS. CTS is associated with a high cost of health care maintenance and loss of work productivity. Therefore, it is vital that primary care physicians fully understand the anatomy, epidemiology, pathophysiology, etiology, and risk factors of CTS, so they can be proactive in prevention, diagnosing, and guiding proper treatment. This integrated review also provides insights into how biological, genetic, environmental, and occupational factors interact with structural elements to determine who is most likely to acquire and suffer from CTS. Keeping health practitioners abreast of all the factors that could impact CTS should go a long way in decreasing the health care and socioeconomic burden of CTS.

Are body mass index and the systemic immune-inflammation index risk factors for carpal tunnel syndrome?

Objectives: Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is the most common entrapment neuropathy of the upper extremity that affects activities of daily living. In our study, we aimed to reveal the relationship between CTS and BMI, and to evaluate symptom severity and functionality in these patients by using the Boston CTS questionnaire. Methods: In this study, 300 patients with CTS and 100 healthy individuals without CTS whose EMG was performed in our neurology clinic electrophysiology laboratory between June 2021 and December 2021, were included. BMI, SII index, and Boston CTS questionnaire findings were compared between patients diagnosed as having mild, moderate, and severe CTS (according to electrophysiologic evaluations) and a control group consisting of healthy individuals. Results: In our study, a statistically significant difference was observed between the CTS and control groups in terms of mean age (p &amp;lt; 0.001). When the increased BMI and SII parameters were compared, a statistically significant difference was observed between the control and CTS groups (p &amp;lt; 0.001 for both). In the multivariate logistic regression analysis, it was observed that the risk of CTS increased 1.566 times as BMI increased, and the risk of CTS increased 1.005 times as the SII index increased (p &amp;lt; 0.001 for both). Conclusions: We observed that increased BMI and advanced age were risk factors for CTS. In our study, in which the relationship between the SII index and CTS was evaluated for the first time, according to our findings, inflammation was thought to play a role in the pathophysiology of CTS.

Risk factors associated with the reported scores on the symptoms severity and functional limitations scales of the Boston Carpal Tunnel Questionnaire: a cross-sectional study.

This cross-sectional study was conducted among 366 female participants. The data was mainly collected using the BCTQ. Demographics and risk factors of CTS were added to the study's complete questionnaire; risk factors included RA, DM, hypothyroidism, number of pregnancies, usage of oral contraceptive pills (OCPs), use of smartphones and keyboards. A P value of less than 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Most participants were in their 30s (44%) and housewives. RA, DM, hypothyroidism, and pregnancy were associated with reporting symptoms and functional limitations on BCTQ. OCPs and smartphone use were associated with functional limitations only. Different risk factors are associated with reporting symptoms and functional limitations of CTS on the BCTQ. For example, RA, DM, hypothyroidism, pregnancy, OCPs, and smartphone use have all been found to statistically affect the outcome of the BCTQ in this study. Therefore, clinical confirmation of the CTS diagnosis is required in future studies to ensure that these symptoms and functional limitations are associated with the CTS pathology rather than other risk factors and pathologies for proper targeted treatment plans and outcomes.

Diabetes Increases Median Nerve Cross-Sectional Area but Not Disease Severity in Patients with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

BackgroundUltrasonography (US) is a useful diagnostic modality for diagnosis of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). Diabetes mellitus is increasingly prevalent and is a risk factor for CTS. Given the increasing use of US in the diagnosis of CTS, our goal was to evaluate the influence of diabetes on CTS severity and the cross-sectional area (CSA) of the median nerve in patients with CTS. MethodsPatients with clinically diagnosed CTS were seen in the outpatient setting from October 2014 to February 2021. Median nerve CSA and patient reported severity measures were obtained: Boston Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Questionnaire (BCTSQ) and CTS-6. For patients with diabetes, additional parameters were collected including most recent A1c, insulin pharmacotherapy, and polypharmacy. ResultsNinety-nine patients (122 nerves) without diabetes and 55 patients (82 nerves) with diabetes were recruited for the study. Patients in the diabetes group were more obese and older and had a significantly increased median nerve CSA compared with patients without diabetes. Obesity was associated with higher median nerve CSA in all patients but not in patients with diabetes. There was no difference in disease severity in patients with and without diabetes as reported by BCTSQ or CTS-6 scores. In patients with diabetes, there was significantly decreased median nerve CSA with A1c of 6.5 or higher and a trend to decreased CSA with polypharmacy. There was no influence of insulin therapy on median nerve CSA. ConclusionDiabetes is associated with higher median nerve CSA in patients with CTS of similar disease severity. The increased median nerve CSA in patients with diabetes may be reflective of diabetes-related microvascular changes. Interestingly, the trend to decreased median nerve CSA in patients with suboptimal diabetic control (A1c ≥ 6.5) may suggest eventual degenerative changes to the median nerve. In summary, clinicians should be cautious with interpreting a larger median nerve CSA as more severe CTS in patients with diabetes. Level of EvidenceLevel 3 Diagnostic.

Prevalence and Predictors of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Symptoms Among Teachers in Riyadh: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Background Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a musculoskeletal disorder (MSD) afflicting the upper limbs with a prevalence of approximately14.4% in the general population. Previous studies have noted the increasing prevalence of MSDs among teachers but have not investigated in depth the prevalence and predictors of CTS symptoms in this population. The aim of this study was to help fill this gap in the literature by investigating teachers working in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Methods We conducted this cross-sectional study in Riyadh using an online survey. We distributed the Boston carpal tunnel questionnaire (BCTQ) to schoolteachers in the city through the social media applications Twitter, WhatsApp, and Telegram. We assessed the respondents' symptoms using Univariate association analyses with a Wilcoxon rank sum test for the continuous variables and Fisher's exact test and Pearson's chi-squared test for the categorical variables. We assessed the independent risk factors for CTS by constructing multivariate binary logistic regression models and expressed the results using the odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs), with p < 0.05 indicating statistical significance. Results The sample for this study included 490 teachers. Among them, the prevalence of moderate to severe CTS symptoms was 40.0%, and self-reported CTS was 9.1%. The teachers who were female, relatively old, left-handed, retired, and spent significant time using a pen, keyboard, and/or blackboard were more likely than those who were male, relatively young, right-handed, and did not spend significant time using a pen, keyboard, and/or blackboard to self-report CTS and exhibit moderate to severe symptoms. Conclusions We found a relatively high percentage (40.0%) of CTS symptoms among teachers working in Riyadh. This finding suggests that any sign of CTS symptoms should be checked to ensure early diagnosis and treatment, which contribute to positive outcomes, particularly given the recent increase in such risk factors for CTS as diabetes, hypothyroidism, and high BMI in populations worldwide.

Risk factors for carpal tunnel syndrome in patients attending the primary care center of a tertiary hospital in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia: A case-control study.

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), the most common entrapment neuropathy in the upper extremity, is known to be a multi-factorial disease that raises medical and nonmedical risk factors. The aim of the current study was to determine the risk factors of CTS in patients attending the primary care center at a tertiary hospital. A case-control study was conducted by reviewing all medical records of patients above the age of 18 years old diagnosed with CTS from 2015 to 2021. The selected cases were evaluated by physical examination and confirmed by a nerve conduction study. Cases and controls were matched by age, gender, and nationality, with a case-to-control ratio of 1:2. Odds ratios were calculated for association between carpel tunnel syndrome and various factors and Chi-sqauare test determined statistical significance. Multiple logistic regression was performed to adjust for confounding. The study recruited 144 cases with a mean age of 53.38 ± 12.20 years and 288 controls with a mean age of 53.80 ± 12.27 years. The majority of subjects were female (84.7%) and of Saudi nationality (68.3%). There was a significant difference in body mass index, employment status, number of years of employment, occupation, mean systolic blood pressure, mean low-density lipoprotein cholesterol level, and mean blood urea level between cases and controls (P < 0.05). Laboratory tests that were found to be significantly associated with CTS in univariate analysis were thyroid-stimulating hormone (crude odds ratio [COR] = 0.828) and urea level (COR = 0.802). In fully adjusted analyses, obesity (adjusted odds ratio [AOR] =3.080), chronic kidney disease (AOR = 3.629), and the use of corticosteroid (AOR = 0.470) were also significantly associated with CTS. Similar to the findings of other studies, this study identified several potential risk factors for CTS. More large-scale longitudinal studies are required to establish a precise causal association.

Aim: The study aimed to find out whether there is a relationship between the mononeuropathies of the median, ulnar, radial, peroneal, and sciatic nerves and body mass index (BMI). Material and Methods: Patients whose clinical and electrodiagnostic findings were compatible with carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), ulnar neuropathy at the elbow (UNE), radial neuropathy at the spiral groove (RNS), peroneal neuropathy at the fibular head (PNFH), and sciatic injury due to intramuscular injection (SNIII) were included in this retrospective cohort study. In addition, controls whose clinical and electrodiagnostic features were not compatible with mononeuropathy were included in the study. The BMI values of all participants were analyzed. Results: One hundred thirty-one CTS patients, 53 UNE patients, 6 RNS patients, 25 PNFH patients, 72 SNIII patients, and 53 controls were included in the study. The BMI of CTS patients was higher than the BMI of controls (p&amp;lt;0.001), PNFH patients (p&amp;lt;0.001), and SNIII patients (p&amp;lt;0.001). The BMI of SNIII patients was lower than the BMI of controls (p&amp;lt;0.001), CTS patients (p&amp;lt;0.001), and UNE patients (p&amp;lt;0.001). The BMI of PNFH patients was lower than that of CTS patients (p&amp;lt;0.001) and UNE patients (p=0.004). No significant correlation was found between BMI values and electrodiagnostic classification of mononeuropathies in the groups. Conclusion: This study showed that high BMI is a risk factor for CTS and low BMI is a risk factor for SNIII. There may also be a relationship between BMI and PNFH, but this should be confirmed by further studies.

Frequency of risk factors in patients with carpal tunnel syndrome

Objective: This study aimed to ascertain the frequency of carpal tunnel syndrome risk factors. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted at the Department of Neurology, Nishtar Hospital Multan, Pakistan. One hundred and twenty patients with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) who attended the study site were enrolled. Baseline data, including age, gender, residential area, Duration of CTS, smoking, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and obesity, were obtained. The blood samples were obtained for screening for hypothyroidism. Results: It was observed that most of the CTS patients were males (63.3%). The observed mean age was 44.3 ± 12.1 years, and 65.8% of cases belonged to urban areas. The most common risk factor observed among the currently enrolled CTS patients was obesity (70.8%), followed by smoking (50.8%), diabetes mellitus (45%), hypertension (34.2%), and hypothyroidism (22.5%). Conclusion: Our study shows that the most common risk factor for CTS was obesity, followed by smoking, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and hypothyroidism.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) is a syndrome that can actually be prevented because there are no risk factors that cannot be changed except for age.

The relationship between carpal tunnel syndrome, smartphone use, and addiction: A cross-sectional study.

This study aims to investigate the use of and addiction to smartphones in individuals with and without carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). The cross-sectional study included a total of 404 participants (286 females, 118 males; mean age: 39.7±11.6 years; range, 16 to 75 years) who applied to the Neurology Department of the Fırat University Faculty of Medicine, between April 2019 and October 2019. The participants were divided into two groups: 202 patients diagnosed with CTS were included in the case group, and 202 patients and their relatives who did not have hand and wrist complaints were included in the control group. The diagnosis of CTS was made by evaluating the history, physical examination, and electromyography findings. Data were collected with participant information forms and the Smartphone Addiction Scale. It was found that the risk of CTS increased 1.022 times with a one-unit increase in the SAS score and 1.292 times with a 1-h increase in daily smartphone use. Smartphone addiction can be considered as a potential risk factor for CTS; however, the effect of smartphone addiction on CTS severity was not examined in this study. The relationship between disease severity, smartphone use, and smartphone addiction in CTS patients requires further investigation to provide clarification on this issue.

Pathophysiology, Diagnosis, Treatment, and Genetics of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome: A Review.

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a common peripheral canalicular nerve entrapment syndrome in the upper extremities. The compression of or injury to the median nerve at the wrist as it passes through a space-limited osteofibrous carpal canal can cause CTS, resulting in hand pain and impaired function. The present paper reviews the literature on the prevalence, pathology, diagnosis, treatment, and risk factors of CTS in conjunction with the role of genetic factors in CTS etiology. CTS diagnosis is primarily linked with clinical symptoms; still, it is simplified by sophisticated approaches such as magnetic resonance imaging and ultrasonography. CTS symptoms can be ameliorated through conservative and surgical strategies. The exact CTS pathophysiology needs clarification. Genetic predispositions to CTS are augmented by various variants within genes; however, CTS etiology could include risk factors such as wrist movements, injury, and specific conditions (e.g., age, body mass index, sex, and cardiovascular conditions). The high prevalence of CTS diminishes the quality of life of its sufferers and imposes costs on health systems, hence the significance of research and clinical trials to elucidate CTS pathogenesis and develop novel therapeutic targets.

The Frequency of V122I Transthyretin Mutation in a Cohort of African American Individuals With Bilateral Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

IntroductionHereditary transthyretin amyloidosis (hATTR) can cause multisystem organ disorders including polyneuropathy and cardiomyopathy. Amongst the many known pathologic mutations of the transthyretin (TTR) gene, the Val122Ile (V122I) mutation can be found in 3–4% of African Americans. Up to 47% of patients with the V122I hATTR cardiomyopathy had a history of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). This raises the question should we screen for this mutation in African Americans with bilateral CTS for the purpose of preventing advanced disease associated with hATTR. This is a prospective pilot study to determine the likelihood of African Americans with bilateral CTS having the V122I mutation and whether various clinical factors contribute to that probability.MethodologyAdult African American patients without prior history of amyloidosis diagnosed with bilateral CTS were recruited for the study. They received genetic testing to screen for a TTR mutation. They also completed questionnaires to screen for symptoms of cardiomyopathy and neuropathy, other risk factors for CTS, and family history of CTS and cardiomyopathy.ResultTwo of the sixteen patients (12.5%) in this cohort were found to have the V122I mutation. The absence of polyneuropathy and cardiomyopathy symptoms, presence of other CTS risk factors, and absence of family history of CTS and cardiomyopathy did not decrease the likelihood of V122I mutation in this cohort.ConclusionThe frequency of V122I transthyretin mutation in African Americans with bilateral CTS may be higher than 3–4%. The presence of bilateral CTS alone may be a justification to screen for TTR mutation in this population.

The Relationship of Long Work When Using Laptop With Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) in College Students

&#x0D; Carpal tunnel syndrome is one musculoskeletal disorder that often occurs in work that uses the wrist repeatedly in a position that is not ergonomic for a long time. Use of laptops by students sometimes does not pay attention to ergonomics when typing by using a laptop properly and correctly, so it becomes one of the risk factors for CTS. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of a long-standing relationship between p CTS events, repetitive movements, and wrist posture with CTS incidence in students of the Class of 2017 IKM UNDANA Study Program. This research is a type of quantitative research cross-sectional study design. This study showed no relationship between long-standing with using the laptop, repetitive movements, and wrist posture with complaints of carpal tunnel syndrome in students of the class of 2017 IKM UNDANA study program. This research shows that there needs to be good time management when typing using a laptop, especially for students.&#x0D;

Case-Control Study on Individual Risk Factors of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome in Bangladeshi Population

Introduction: Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a symptomatic compression neuropathy of the median nerve at the level of the wrist, physiologically characterized by increased pressure within the carpal tunnel and a decreased function of the nerve at that level. With the prevalence estimated between 7% and 18% of the adult population, CTS is the most common entrapment neuropathy of the upper extremities. It is the most common neuro-compressive disease. Objective: To assess the individual risk factors of carpal tunnel syndrome In Bangladeshi Population. Materials and Methods: The present case-control study was conduct at the Dept. of Neurology, Uttara Adhunik Medical College Hospital (UAMCH), Uttara, Dhaka, Bangladesh from January 2019 to December 2021. 3019 patients included in our study and who were diagnosed in the 84% of patients were aged 41-70 years both case and control groups. Both groups filled out a standardized questionnaire, and a standardized patient record was filled out by Neurology Department. In addition, participants with jobs involving lifting and carrying of loads were interviewed. The incidence of CTS in middle aged women was significantly higher than that in men. Results: In our study 3019 patients who were diagnosed in the 84% of patients were aged 41-70 years. Among these patients, there were 756 CTS patients aged 41-70 years without any other diseases which could cause numbness as the case group. Then there were 2263 non-CTS outpatients involved as the control group. The average BMI in case group was 22.79±2.60 and 21.49±5.03 in control group with significant difference (P&lt;0.01). The results showed that sex, age, smoking, wrist injury, diabetes mellitus, hypothyroidism and wrist working are all risk factors of CTS. Hypertension could be a protection factor of CTS in early phase but will increase the risk in a long-term high blood pressure. Smoking, alcohol and diabetes mellitus can be predictors of moderate and severe CTS. ......................

Weight-Related and Personal Risk Factors of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome in the Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1966.

Background: Excess body mass is a risk factor for carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), but the mechanisms of this are unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the association between CTS and personal risk factors of body mass index (BMI), waist circumference and waist-to-hip ratio (WHR). Methods: The study sample consisted of the Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1966 (n = 9246). At the age of 31 in 1997 and at the age of 46 in 2012, the participants underwent a clinical examination. Cohort A consisted of complete cases with a follow-up from 1997 to 2012 (n = 4701), and Cohort B was followed up from 2012 to 2018 (n = 4548). The data on diagnosed CTS were provided by the Care Register for Health Care until the end of 2018. Results: After an adjustment for confounding factors, BMI was associated with CTS among women (hazard ratio (HR) 1.47, 95% Cl 0.98–2.20 for overweight women and HR 2.22, 95% Cl 1.29–3.83 for obese women) and among both sexes combined (HR 1.35 95% Cl 0.96–1.90 for overweight and HR 1.98 95% Cl 1.22–3.22 for obese participants). Neither waist circumference nor WHR was associated with CTS. Conclusions: BMI is an independent risk factor for CTS and is more relevant for estimating the increased risk of CTS due to excess body mass than waist circumference or WHR.
