Prevalence of HPV infection in the general population of young and adult males in Italy.

The most prevalent sexually transmitted disease in the world has the human papillomavirus (HPV) as its etiological agent. To evaluate the prevalence of previous and actual HPV infection and the clinical manifestations in unselected males. A total of 718 males participating to a surveillance program were asked to complete a study visit at our unit, including semen collection, balanopreputial sulcus swab, and blood collection for total anti-HPV immunoglobulin G (IgG). When HPV-DNA was detected, we performed HPV fluorescence in situ hybridization, oral and anal swab, and penoscopy. Because previous studies demonstrated a very high risk for HPV infection in subjects with history of HPV-induced lesions, with a partner with diagnosed HPV infection or reporting couple infertility or sexual promiscuity and an increase of the risk in males having sex with males, in subjects with unprotected sexual intercourses or in heavy smokers, patients were therefore stratified according to the presence of these known risk factors (RFs). Actual HPV infection was detected in 401/718 subjects (55.85%). Oral HPV-DNA was reported in 80 subjects and anal HPV infection in 52 subjects. Anti-HPV IgG antibodies have been detected in 288 subjects. The overall prevalence of HPV exposition, considering actual and/or previous infection was 77.99%. Among infected men, high-risk HPV genotypes were detected in 66.08%. A total of 514 subjects were considered as the RF population, while 150 were classified in the non-RF population. There was a significantly higher prevalence of condylomatosis (odds ratio [OR] 4.07) and of seminal infection (OR 6.22) in the RF group. These data represent an alert for the healthcare system to perform informative and screening campaigns for HPV infection in males and to promote HPV vaccination both in young people and for adult males with RF for HPV infections.

Human papillomavirus DNA detection in cervical samples from women of reproductive age in Mogadishu, Somalia.

Somalia is among the countries with a high burden of human papillomavirus (HPV) infection in Sub-Saharan Africa. In 2022, 660,000 infections are reported among women globally, out of which 350,000 died from the disease. Most of the studies on HPV reported from Somalia are based on cytologic analysis which is a subjective and suboptimal assessment. The recent World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines for HPV recommend DNA-based testing as a better alternative to the traditional pap smear test. This study was undertaken to determine the prevalence of HPV based on the preferred HPV DNA assay on cervical samples of women of reproductive age in Mogadishu, Somalia. The HPV DNA detection was carried out using real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) assays to identify high-risk oncogenic HPV16, HPV18, and other high-risk HPV types. Overall, 31.7% (60/189) of cervical samples were positive for HPV DNA. Out of this, 19.6% were high risk-HPV (hrHPV), 13.8% were HPV16, and 5.3% were HPV18. Moreover, age, income and education level were found to be significant risk factors for HPV infection. These results provide further proof that HPV continues to be a serious public health challenge in Somalia with the risk of progressing to fatal cervical cancer.

Let’s open our eyes to the importance of vaginal microbiota. Correlation between dysbiosis and HPV infection: A review

Infections with the human papillomavirus (HPV) are one of the most common sexually transmitted diseases and are the main cause of precancerous changes and cervical cancer development. However, mere infection does not guarantee the development of disease or carcinogenesis. For this to occur, high-risk types of HPV must integrate into the host cell genome, transitioning into a persistent form of infection. Following the discovery of risk factors for HPV infection and factors predisposing infection to a persistent form, the number of studies investigating the correlation between vaginal dysbiosis and infection has significantly increased. Numerous studies document a significant association between the state of vaginal bacterial flora and HPV infection, leading to the development of plentiful studies on infection pathogenesis, risk factors, prevention, and treatment methods using bacteria. In this paper, based on recently published studies and current state of science knowledge, we will outline the topic of vaginal microbiome, emphasize the importance of bacteria inhabiting the vagina for human health, and identify the problem of changes in vaginal microflora. We would like to contribute to the dissemination of knowledge about the vaginal microbiome and general knowledge about taking care of its health. We will also summarize available treatment methods based on bacterial environment and discuss those methods for which research is currently underway or should be initiated.

Correlation between Indicators of Vaginal Microbiota and Human Papillomavirus Infection: A Retrospective Study

Background: Increasing evidence suggests that both the vaginal microbiota and human papillomavirus (HPV) may play a role in the development of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) and cervical cancer. However, the relationship between the vaginal microbiome and HPV infection remains poorly understood. The objective of this study was to investigate the association between indicators of the vaginal microbiota and HPV infection. Methods: From January 2020 to June 2022, clinical data were collected from 5099 outpatients at Beijing Friendship Hospital. These patients underwent simultaneous testing for vaginal microecology and HPV type. A statistical analysis was conducted to examine the relationship between indicators of the vaginal microbiota and HPV infection. Results: HPV infections were detected in 12.47% (636/5099) of the subjects. Single, double, triple, quadruple, and quintuple infections accounted for 81.29%, 14.62%, 3.14%, 0.94%, and 0.15% of all infections, respectively. A significant disparity in HPV infection prevalence was observed between the vaginitis group and the general population. However, no variation was found among different vaginitis groups. The data indicated that individuals with clue cells and sialidase were more susceptible to HPV infection. Sialidase was identified as an independent risk factor for HPV infection in a multivariable logistic regression model. The most prevalent HPV subtypes were 16 and 52, representing 2.10% and 2.86%, 3.14% and 2.86%, 1.78% and 2.16% in the normal, bacterial vaginitis, and other groups, respectively. Conclusions: Our findings demonstrate the presence of clue cells and sialidase, which are two diagnostic criteria for bacterial vaginitis, in association with HPV infection. Furthermore, our results suggest that sialidase could potentially serve as a valuable predictor of HPV infection.

Prevalence of Trichomonas Infection in Relation to Human Papillomavirus (HPV) in Pap Smear Samples of Female Patients Referred to Shahid Sadoughi Hospital, Yazd (Iran).

Objectives Human papillomavirus (HPV) and Trichomonas vaginalis (TV) infections have been proposed as risk factors for cervical cancer. This study has been conducted with the aim of investigating the prevalence of TV and its relationship with HPV in women who underwent Pap smear testing as part of cancer screenings. Materials and methods The sampling of liquid-based cervical tissue was conducted among 500 women referred to the women's clinic of Shahid Sadoughi Hospital in Yazd, Iran. The studied samples were examined for Pap smear tests and microscopic identification of TV, as well as HPV-DNA detection and the determination of high-risk and low-risk HPV types by the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method. The results were analyzed using the IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows, Version 24 (Released 2016; IBM Corp., Armonk, New York) software. Results The individuals included in the study were 16-72 years old. The prevalence rate of TV infection in this population was found to be 29.2%, and the frequency rate of HPV was reported to be approximately 19.4%, with high-risk HPV, including HPV-56, having the highest frequency. The Pap smear test results were reported as abnormal in 20.2%, anda significant correlation was observed between HPV infection and an abnormal Pap smear test (P < 0.05). In addition, a notable correlation was detected between TV infection and high-risk and low-risk HPV (P < 0.05). Conclusion According to the significant relationship found between the two pathogens, TV and HPV, in the abnormal Pap smear test results, TV infection can be considered a risk factor for HPV infection, as well as uterine lesions and cancer.

Prevalence of Human Papillomavirus (HPV) and HPV Type Distribution in Penile Samples in Young Men in Denmark: Results 10 Years After Implementation of a Girls-Only HPV Vaccination Program.

In Denmark, a girls-only human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination program was initiated in 2008-2009. The study aim was to assess the HPV prevalence and type distribution in younger men prior to HPV vaccination in men. The study population was younger men who attended information days regarding military service. At random days (2019-2020), 280 men were included. We collected questionnaire data regarding risk factors for HPV infection and a penile swab for HPV testing. We compared results in this study with those from a previous study of young men (2006-2007). The majority of participants (94%) were 18-20 years old. The median number of lifetime sexual partners was 4. Altogether, 130 men (46.4%) were HPV positive. No infections with HPV types 6, 11, 16, 18, 31, and 45 were detected. The most frequent type was HPV-51 (detected in 11.1%). Comparison showed that the odds of high-risk HPV type infection were higher in 2019-2020 (prevalence odds ratio [POR], 1.7 [95% confidence interval {CI}, 1.1-2.7]) compared with 2006-2007. In contrast, the odds were lower (POR, 0.3 [95% CI, .1-.6]) for HPV types targeted by the 9-valent HPV vaccine. The multicohort girls-only vaccination program has to a large degree protected young men against the HPV types included in the licensed vaccines. This does not speak against gender-neutral vaccination as the HPV prevalence is still high, although consisting largely of less carcinogenic HPV types.

Knowledge and Practices Regarding Human Papillomavirus and Cervical Cancer Screening Among Women in Low-Income Areas of China: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Persistent human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is the primary cause of cervical cancer. However, this can be prevented through vaccination and screening. This study aimed to clarify the relationship between behavior, knowledge, and attitude toward cervical cancer and regular screening and HPV infection among women in Lueyang County. Women who underwent cervical cancer screening at the outpatient department of a maternal and child health center between September and December 2021 were invited to participate. In total, 2,303women completed the questionnaire. Women who underwent regular or irregular screening were 1:1 matched for age. Differences in knowledge of HPV and attitudes toward HPV vaccination among different populations were assessed. Logistic regression analysis was performed to identify the factors influencing HPV infection. In total, 417 pairs of women who underwent regular and irregular screening were successfully matched. Multivariate logistic regression results indicated that age is a risk factor for HPV infection (OR=1.05695%CI: [1.0311.082]), while regular screening acts as a protective factor against HPV infection (OR=0.17495%CI: [0.1170.259]). Additionally, regular screening was associated with a higher level of knowledge about HPV among women compared to those who did not undergo regular screening (p<0.001). Women in Lueyang County have low levels of knowledge regarding HPV and cervical cancer. Regular screening is a protective factor against HPV infection. The regular screening group demonstrates a higher level of HPV knowledge compared with the irregular screening group. These findings highlight the importance of regular screening and the need to strengthen public health education.

Risk factors for human papillomavirus infection and disease: A targeted literature summary.

Adolescents are the primary cohort for routine human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination, but unvaccinated adults may also benefit. A lack of consensus on which adults to target and the presence of reimbursement barriers likely contribute to the lag in adult vaccinations, highlighting missed prevention opportunities. Understanding factors contributing to risk of HPV infection and disease could help in decision making on vaccination. This review summarizes existing literature on risk factors for HPV infection and disease and includes 153 studies reporting relative risks or odds ratios for factors associated with HPV infection or disease in adults, published between 2009 and 2020. Despite inconsistent design and reporting of risk factors across studies, this review confirmed several risk factors associated with adult infection, including human immunodeficiency virus positivity, number of sex partners, and smoking. These findings can support policymaking, guideline development, and clinical decision making for HPV vaccination and screening of high-risk adult groups.

Relationship between vaginal microecology and human papillomavirus infection as well as cervical intraepithelial neoplasia in 2,147 women from Wenzhou, the southeast of China.

The female reproductive tract is a significant microecological region, and its micro-environment can directly affect women's cervical health. This research aimed to investigate the effect of vaginal microecology on human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and cervical intraepithelial neoplasia(CIN). A retrospective cohort study enrolling 2,147 women who underwent a colposcopic examination between August 2021 and August 2022 was conducted. The relationship between vaginal microecology and HPV infection as well as cervical lesions were assessed using the chi-square test, univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses, and Cochran-Armitage trend test. HPV infection was linked to the imbalance of vaginal microecology [odds ratio (OR)=3.00, 95% confidence interval (CI)=1.66-5.43; P<0.001]. Clue cell (OR=1.59, 95% CI=0.99-2.54; P=0.054) and sialidase (OR=1.54, 95% CI=1.01-2.35; P<0.046) were considered as significant risk factors for HPV infection. Further analysis showed that vaginal microecological disorder was more likely to be detected in patients infected with HPV 16/18 subtypes (OR=9.86, 95% CI=2.37-41.80; P=0.002). Although there was no significant correlation between the incidence of vaginal microecological disorder and the severity of cervical lesions (P > 0.05), the proportions of abnormal PH value (OR=2.6, 95% CI=1.63-10.42; P=0.001) and abnormal vaginal cleanliness (OR=2.6, 95% CI=1.36-4.0; P= 0.004) increased as the histological stage progressed. Vaginal microecology associates with HPV infection and the progression of cervical lesions. Detection of vaginal secretion may contribute to the development of targets for micro-environmental modulation with probiotics and the reduction of the incidence of cervical cancer.

Global and regional estimates of genital human papillomavirus prevalence among men: a systematic review and meta-analysis

The epidemiology of human papillomavirus (HPV) in women has been well documented. Less is known about the epidemiology of HPV in men. We aim to provide updated global and regional pooled overall, type-specific, and age-specific prevalence estimates of genital HPV infection in men. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to assess the prevalence of genital HPV infection in the general male population. We searched Embase, Ovid MEDLINE, and the Global Index Medicus for studies published between Jan 1, 1995, and June 1, 2022. Inclusion criteria were population-based surveys in men aged 15 years or older or HPV prevalence studies with a sample size of at least 50 men with no HPV-related pathology or known risk factors for HPV infection that collected samples from anogenital sites and used PCR or hybrid capture 2 techniques for HPV DNA detection. Exclusion criteria were studies conducted among populations at increased risk of HPV infection, exclusively conducted among circumcised men, and based on urine or semen samples. We screened identified reports and extracted summary-level data from those that were eligible. Data were extracted by two researchers independently and reviewed by a third, and discrepancies were resolved by consensus. We extracted only data on mucosal α-genus HPVs. Global and regional age-specific prevalences for any HPV, high-risk (HR)-HPV, and individual HPV types were estimated using random-effects models for meta-analysis and grouped by UN Sustainable Development Goals geographical classification. We identified 5685 publications from database searches, of which 65 studies (comprising 44 769 men) were included from 35 countries. The global pooled prevalence was 31% (95% CI 27-35) for any HPV and 21% (18-24) for HR-HPV. HPV-16 was the most prevalent HPV genotype (5%, 95% CI 4-7) followed by HPV-6 (4%, 3-5). HPV prevalence was high in young adults, reaching a maximum between the ages of 25 years and 29 years, and stabilised or slightly decreased thereafter. Pooled prevalence estimates were similar for the UN Sustainable Development Goal geographical regions of Europe and Northern America, Sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, and Australia and New Zealand (Oceania). The estimates for Eastern and South-Eastern Asia were half that of the other regions. Almost one in three men worldwide are infected with at least one genital HPV type and around one in five men are infected with one or more HR-HPV types. Our findings show that HPV prevalence is high in men over the age of 15 years and support that sexually active men, regardless of age, are an important reservoir of HPV genital infection. These estimates emphasise the importance of incorporating men in comprehensive HPV prevention strategies to reduce HPV-related morbidity and mortality in men and ultimately achieve elimination of cervical cancer and other HPV-related diseases. Human Papillomavirus Positivity at 3 Anatomical Sites Among Transgender Women in Central Brazil.

Transgender women (TGW) are susceptible to the acquisition of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including human papillomavirus (HPV). Nonetheless, the exact data for this population are scarce. We estimated HPV positivity at the anal, genital, and oral sites among TGW and also identified the related characteristics and behaviors that could be risk factors for HPV infection in a sample of TGW in Brazil. Furthermore, we characterized the site-specific HPV genotypes among those who were positive for HPV at these 3 sites. A cross-sectional study was conducted on TGW in Goiânia City (Central-Midwest region), Brazil, between April 2018 and August 2019. Respondent-driven sampling was applied for recruitment. Next, self-collected anal, genital, and oral samples were examined for HPV DNA using polymerase chain reaction (SPF-10 primer). Human papillomavirus genotypes were identified in 12 TGW. In the TGW included in the study, the anal, genital, and oral HPV positivity values were 77.2% (95% confidence interval [CI], 67.3%-84.6%), 33.5% (95% CI, 26.1%-48.9%), and 10.9% (95% CI, 5.8%-17.0%), respectively. In addition, the majority of 12 participants who tested for HPV had multiple genotypes. HPV-52 was the most prevalent genotype identified at the anal (66.6%) and genital (40.0%) sites, whereas HPV-62 and HPV-66 were the most common at the oral site (25.0%). A high HPV positivity was observed among TGW. Therefore, additional epidemiological studies on HPV genotypes should generate health intervention information, including the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of sexually transmitted infections.

Cervical Health in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus.

A health disparity exists for African American (AA) women with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) who have increased prevalence of human papilloma virus (HPV) infection and cervical neoplasia. We used a self-sampling brush to obtain cervical cells to assess cytology, HPV infection, and vaginal cytokine production in AA women with SLE. Thirty AA women with SLE ages 18-50 years consented to participate. Clinical information was obtained by review of records and patient interviews, and surveys administered to assess cervical health history, knowledge of HPV, and satisfaction with the self-sampling brush. Vaginal samples were analyzed for cytology, HPV DNA and RNA, and vaginal cytokine RNA. Our cohort (mean 36.9, ±9.4 years) had moderate/severe SLE and were on immunosuppressives. The majority had history of abnormal pap smears (63%) with prevalent risk factors for HPV infection: multiple sex partners (9.5 ± 7), not vaccinated for HPV (83.3%), smoking (26.7%), and not using condoms (73.3%). Most were aware of HPV causing cervical cancer (70%) but were unaware of other HPV-related diseases. Most preferred self-sampling over traditional pap smear (80%). Abnormal cytology was detected in 13.3%. HPV DNA was detected in 70%, with half showing multiple types, and all showing active infection (+RNA). HPV-infected samples demonstrated RNA expression of multiple cytokines with no specific/ consistent pattern. Our high-risk cohort lacked knowledge about HPV-related diseases and were not employing strategies to reduce their risk with vaccination and condoms. This study highlights the need for cervical health education, increased monitoring, and intervention in these high-risk women.

Prevalence of human papillomavirus genotypes and related cervical morphological results in southern Hunan Province of China, 2018-2020: Baseline measures at a tertiary institution prior to mass human papillomavirus vaccination.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is closely correlated with cervical lesions. However, the HPV prevalence varies among different districts. This retrospective study investigated the HPV genotype distribution and its relationship with cervical lesions in southern Hunan Province. The database at our Pathology Department was searched for HPV and morphological results during 2018-2020 were reviewed. A total of 49,955 gynaecological inpatients and outpatients, each of whom underwent HPV testing based on the amplification of L1 sequence and reverse dot blot hybridization, were included in this study. Available cytology and relevant histological examination results were reviewed. Enrolled cases were categorized into seven groups based on their age. Household registry and educational level were evaluated. Seven thousand two hundred eighty-six females were positive for HPV and the overall HPV positivity rate was 14.59%. The top five most prevalent HPV genotypes were HPV52, 16, 58, 53 and 51 (22.98%, 17.54%, 14.29%, 7.47%, and 5.70%, respectively). The HPV prevalence curve specific to the seven age groups showed a bimodal distribution. High school education or blow and rural residence served as risk factors for HPV infection. Single infection was the main type of HPV infection, and multiple infections occurred in 21.92% of the infected women. Of 3,148 cases had cytological results, 1,149 (36.50%) had abnormal cytological abnormalities. Among 2,833 participants with histological examination, 2000 (70.60%) had cervical abnormalities. Cytological and pathological abnormalities were mainly associated with infection with HPV16, 52 and 58. Further analysis found that HPV16, 58, 52 and 33 were the main genotypes associated with high-grade squamous lesions (HSIL) and that HPV16, 31, 33 and 58 were independent risk factors for HSIL (odd ratio [OR] = 1.70, 1.99, 2.59, 2.29; 95% CI = 1.41-2.03, 1.17-3.41, 1.88-3.59, 1.85-2.82; all p < 0.05). HPV16, 58, 52, 18 and 33 were the most frequent genotypes detected in squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) patients, and HPV16 and 18 were independent risk factors for cervical carcinomas (OR = 6.72;95% CI = 5.48-8.25; p < 0.001; OR = 1.67, 95% CI = 1.22-2.30; p = 0.001). This retrospective study demonstrated the prevalence and the distribution characteristics of HPV infection and its correlation with cervical lesions in southern Hunan Province. The comprehensive results of this survey can guide HPV vaccine research to protect against some common genotypes in China.

EVALUATION OF UKRAINIAN MEDICAL STUDENTS' KNOWLEDGE, ATTITUDE, AND PRACTICE REGARDING THE PREVENTION OF PAPILLOMAVIRUS INFECTION

The purpose of the study was to assess the level of Ukrainian medical students' knowledge regarding the human papillomavirus (HPV), as well as their attitude and practice regarding the prevention of HPV infection. Materials and methods. A cross-sectional epidemiological study was conducted among medical students in Kharkiv, Kyiv, and Vinnytsia in October–December 2022. A questionnaire was developed. Two hundred and fifty-two medical students took part in the survey. Descriptive statistics methods were used for data analysis. Pearson's χ2 test was used to determine if there was a significant relationship between two nominal variables. Results. The sample of respondents was represented by students aged 16–38 years, primarily female (87.3%, n = 220). Almost three-quarters (73.8%, n = 186) of all respondents indicated the need for additional information about HPV. Only 43.3% of respondents (n = 109) knew that the early onset of sexual life was a risk factor for HPV infection. Thirty-seven respondents (14.7%) correctly indicated that men who had sex with men were at increased risk of HPV infection compared to heterosexual men. Seventy-nine students (31.3%) reported that they didn't know about the existence of the HPV vaccine before taking the questionnaire. Seventy-five students (29.8%) didn't know whether vaccination against HPV infection was mandatory in Ukraine and whether it was included in the national vaccination schedule. Only 57.9% of respondents (n = 146) reported that they systematically (at least once a year) visited a gynecologist/urologist. The proportion of students who had sexual relations and visited a gynecologist/urologist was greater than the proportion of students who didn't have sexual relations and regularly visited a gynecologist/urologist (χ2 = 27.559; p &lt; 0.00001). One hundred and forty-eight respondents (58.7%) indicated that they had sexual relations. Of them, 52.0% (n = 77) of respondents had two or more sexual partners during their lifetime. Twenty-seven respondents of those who had sex life (18.2%) had never been tested for sexually transmitted infections (STIs). The majority of students with sexual relations (57.4%, n = 85) never demanded documentary confirmation of the absence of STIs from their sexual partners. The proportion of students vaccinated against HPV was 5.2% (n = 13 of 252). Forty-three respondents (n = 43) did not know their vaccination status and could not say with certainty whether they had been vaccinated against HPV. The other 77.8% of respondents (n = 196) indicated that they were not vaccinated against HPV infection. Among the unvaccinated students, 33.7% of respondents (n = 66) planned to get vaccinated against HPV; 21.9% of respondents (n = 43) didn't plan to be vaccinated against HPV. Conclusion. An insufficient level of knowledge of medical students regarding HPV was revealed. There is a lack of adherence of medical students to HPV vaccination. Factors of risky sexual behavior have been identified among persons who have sexual relations. It is necessary to increase the awareness of future doctors about HPV and HPV immunoprophylaxis by optimizing educational programs in medical universities and to intensify sanitary and educational work on safe sex.

Using theory of reasoned action to reduce high-risk sexual behaviors among patients with HPV: A randomized controlled trial.

Sexually transmitted diseases are a major health problem in all countries. Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is the most common viral sexually transmitted disease in both genders. High-risk sexual behaviors (HRSBs) are among the major risk factors for HPV infection. Lack of knowledge can contribute to HRSBs and hence, education can potentially reduce HRSB risk. This is a study using theory of reasoned action to reduce the high-risk sexual behaviors among patients with HPV. This study was a two-grouped, randomized, controlled trial. The educational program was developed based on the results of a survey into the most important components of the theory of reasoned action contributing to HRSBs among 100 patients recruited from Razi hospital, Tehran, Iran. Then, 110 patients from the same hospital were consecutively recruited and randomly allocated to a control (n = 55) and an intervention (n = 55) group. Then, each participant in the intervention group was provided with the developed educational program. Their counterparts in the control group solely received routine care services. Three months after the first educational session, HRSBs were reassessed in both groups. Data were analyzed via the SPSS software (v. 21.0). After the intervention, the mean score of HRSBs significantly decreased in the intervention group (P < 0.001) but did not significantly change in the control group (P = 0.70). The post-test mean score of HRSBs in the intervention group was significantly less than the control group (P = 0.015). Education based on the theory of reasoned action is effective in significantly reducing HRSBs. Nurses can develop and use educational interventions based on this theory to reduce HRSBs and HPV infection.

Correlation of High-Risk Human Papilloma Virus with Deep Endometriosis: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Recently, it has been suggested that microbial infections play a role in the pathogenesis of endometriosis. One of the most commonly suggested infections associated with the pathogenesis of endometriosis is human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. The present study is aimed at evaluating the prevalence, types, and risk factors for HPV infection in women with endometriosis and at investigating the association of upper and lower genital tract involvement with HPV and the severity of endometriosis. This cross-sectional study was conducted on 81 patients with endometriosis, referred to Rasool Akram Medical Complex in Tehran, Iran, for laparoscopic surgery. The patients' demographic, clinical, and anthropometric data were extracted from their medical records, as well as interviews. The stage of disease was scored based on the revised American Society for Reproductive Medicine (rASRM) classification. The HPV-positive and HPV-negative cases were compared using the chi-square test for categorical variables and Student t-test for continuous variables. Twenty (24.69%) out of 81 women with endometriosis were infected with HPV (nine cases of pelvic HPV, nine cases of vaginal HPV, and two cases of both pelvic and vaginal HPV). The HPV-infected women had a significantly lower infertility rate (15% vs. 45.9%; P = 0.014). The VAS scores for dysmenorrhea and dyspareunia were relatively the same in the two groups (P > 0.05). HPV 6 and HPV 11 were the most common types of HPV, reported in 35% and 30% of endometriosis cases, respectively. The prevalence of HPV was 24.69%, and low-risk genotypes were dominant. No significant association was found between HPV and the severity of endometriosis.

The role of the human papilloma virus in the development of potentially malignant diseases and squamous cell carcinomas of the oral mucosa

The prevalence of HPV in potentially malignant diseases of the oral cavity is 22.5%. Different types of HPV are characterized by genotypic variations in the DNA base sequences E6 and E7. It is these genotypic differences that make it possible to divide the oncogenic phenotype of the virus into types of high and low cancer risk. There are local and general risk factors for HPV infection. Local risk factors include poor oral hygiene, the use of complete dentures in combination with old age. A significant correlation between oral hygiene and viral load has been confirmed. This review presents the possible role of human papillomavirus (HPV) in the development of potentially malignant diseases and squamous cell carcinomas of the oral cavity. The epidemiology, risk factors and mechanisms of human papillomavirus infection development are given. Clinical and morphological differences between HPV-positive and HPV-negative forms of oral cancer are considered. The issues of HPV infection prevention and the pathogenetic therapy development of this disease are reviewed. Literature search was carried out in search engines Medline, Elibrary, Scopus, PubMed, The Cochrane Library, RSCI.

Status and epidemiological characteristics of high-risk human papillomavirus infection in multiple centers in Shenyang.

The different human papillomavirus (HPV) strains cause warts in various regions of the body. However, considering that the status and genotype distribution of HPV infection in women in Shenyang remain unknown, herein, we investigated the epidemiological characteristics of high-risk HPV (HR-HPV) infection in women in Shenyang, as well as the current state of HPV infection in Shenyang, to provide a theoretical basis for the prevention and treatment of cervical cancer. From December 2018 to December 2021, 6,432 urban and rural women from the Liaoning Cancer Hospital and the Sujiatun Women and Infants’ Hospital were assessed via the Thinprep cytology test (TCT) and HR-HPV detection. Of the 5,961 women enrolled, 739 were HPV positive (12.40%) and 562 were TCT positive (9.43%). Statistical analyses identified the following HPV risk factors: high school education or lower [OR = 1.426 (1.199–1.696), p < 0.001], age at first sexual encounter ≤ 19 years [OR = 1.496 (1.008–2.220), p = 0.046], and number of sexual partners > 1 [OR = 1.382 (1.081–1.768), p = 0.010], atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASCUS) and above [OR = 10.788 (8.912–13.060), p < 0.001], non-condom-based contraception [OR = 1.437 (1.103–1.871), p = 0.007], nationalities other than Han [OR = 1.690 (1.187–2.406), p = 0.004], rural residence [OR = 1.210 (1.031–1.419), p = 0.020]. Compared to the HPV infection rate of women aged 56–65, that in women aged 35–45 [OR = 0.687 (0.549–0.860), p = 0.001] and 46–55 [OR = 0.740 (0.622–0.879), p = 0.001] decreased significantly. To conclude, risk factors of HPV infection among female patients include high school age and below, initial sexual encounter at age ≤ 19 years, number of sexual partners > 1, ASCUS and above, non-condom contraception, nationalities other than Han nationality and rural population. Collectively, this study provides insights for the improved prevention and treatment of cervical cancer.

Microbiological and behavioral determinants of genital HPV infections among adolescent girls and young women warrant the need for targeted policy interventions to reduce HPV risk.

BackgroundGenital human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted virus in most populations globally. Adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) remain a key population group at risk for HPV infection. However, the risk factors of HPV infection among AGYW, especially in sub-Saharan Africa, are a subject of little investigation in published literature. Here, we investigated the factors associated with HPV infection among unvaccinated South African AGYW with a high HPV burden (prevalence: 76.1%).MethodsWe retrospectively recruited 213 AGYW learners (aged 15–25 years) from a previous cross-sectional study, the HPV Education Intervention Study, conducted in the Eastern Cape, South Africa. Sexually transmitted infections (STIs), bacterial pathobionts, genital ulcers (due to infectious causes), candidiasis, and bacterial vaginosis (BV) in the self-collected vaginal specimens were determined using the Allplex™ Panel Assays. Statistical analyses were performed using STATA v16.1. Continuous and categorical variables were computed by t-test /Wilcoxon rank-sum test and Chi-square/Fisher's exact tests, respectively. Logistic regression was used to determine the univariable predictors of HPV infection.ResultsThe overall detection rate of any viral STI, bacterial STI, pathobiont, genital ulcer, candidiasis, and BV among the AGYW was 75.0, 34.4, 90.7, 14.4, 26.9, and 43.6%, respectively. The main factors associated with HPV infection were alcohol consumption (p = 0.005), infection with any and multiple Candida species (p = 0.011 and 0.006, respectively), Candida albicans infection (p = 0.010), Ureaplasma urealyticum pathobiont infection (p = 0.044), BV-associated bacteria (specifically Atopobium vaginae: p = 0.039, BV-associated bacteria 2: p = 0.021, Gardnerella vaginalis: p = 0.021, Megasphaera type 1: p = 0.037), and BV (p = 0.011).ConclusionsOur study, albeit not necessarily generalizable, found social behavior as well as specific vaginal microbes as correlates of HPV infection among AGYW in South Africa. There is a need to investigate HPV epidemiology in other AGYW populations. The factors associated with genital HPV infection among AGYW burdened with HPV infection necessitate the need to formulate and implement population-specific public health strategies for creating HPV awareness and reducing its risk.

Risk of human papillomavirus infection and cervical intraepithelial lesions in Chinese renal transplant recipients.

ObjectiveWhile human papillomavirus (HPV) infection in women is associated with cervical intraepithelial neoplasia and cervical cancer, HPV testing is not often performed in routine practice for renal transplantation patients. The genotype-specific prevalence of HPV and risk factors for HPV infection are still unclear.MethodsFrom 2010 to 2020, patients receiving renal transplantation surgery (referred to as RTRs), who had been screened for HPV infection one year after transplantation were enrolled. A comparison cohort of four age- and marital status-matched healthy individuals was selected for RTRs. The clinical characteristics and cervical screening results of RTRs were analyzed.ResultsOur study included 196 female renal transplant recipients (RTRs), none of whom had been vaccinated against HPV. Overall high-risk HPV (hrHPV) infection and abnormal cytology rates in the RTR group were 23.5% and 20.9%, respectively. The odds ratios of hrHPV infection and cervical intraepithelial neoplasia grade 2+ in RTRs vs. non-RTRs were 3.033 (95% CI, 2.013-4.568) and 3.628 (95% CI, 1.863-7.067), respectively. The prevalence of HPV16 in RTRs was much higher (30.4% vs. 8.3%, P=0.002). The multi-infection rate was much higher in HPV-infected RTRs (23.9% vs. 1.14%, P<0.001). The only risk factor for hrHPV infection was the duration of immunosuppression, which increased with time.ConclusionRTRs had significantly higher HPV infection rates and increased risks of HPV-related cervical premalignancies and cancers due to the immunosuppressed state. The duration of immunosuppression is a risk factor for transplant recipients. Female RTRs may benefit from more frequent cervical cancer screening after renal transplantation than healthy women. Prospective research on HPV infection dynamics in RTRs and optimal screening methods should be further explored in the future.
