The research was conducted at dr. New Oen Solo. The research was conducted in November-February 2020. Based on the analysis and discussion, it can be concluded that risk factors, wet work, atopic history, age, gender, years of service are not related to the incidence of hand dermatitis in hospital nurses in Sukoharjo.

Occupational hand dermatitis in car repair workers.

IntroductionExposure to used gasoline engine oils during oil change and other automobile repair services is common for many mechanics, electrical technicians, and other car service workers. We aimed to determine the prevalence of hand dermatitis in car repair workers with different specialty and actual dermal exposure hazards in the workplace.MethodsWe examined the dermal problems in 153 male car repair workers and compared it to 140 office workers. Exposed and control groups were administered a Nordic Occupational Skin Questionnaire. Dermal exposure score also was calculated.ResultsThe prevalence of hand dermatitis in car repair workers (19.0%) was significantly higher than office worker (7.9%) [OR: 2.74, (95% CI = 1.31, 5.73)] and also higher than general population. Prevalence of atopic dermatitis was significantly higher in exposed group that had hand dermatitis compared with those who had no hand dermatitis (P < 0.001). The highest hand dermatitis as well as actual dermal exposure was observed in the mechanics and transmission technician respectively.ConclusionCar repair workers have an elevated prevalence of hand dermatitis in comparison with office workers. The most important risk factors for hand dermatitis among car repair workers are atopic dermatitis and the next the level of skin exposure to potential skin hazards.

Association between smoking and hand dermatitis--a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Tobacco smoking is known to influence various inflammatory skin diseases. A systematic review with a meta-analysis was conducted to analyse a possible association between the lifestyle factor tobacco smoking and hand dermatitis. We performed a systematic review using the MEDLINE, Embase and Cochrane Central Register databases. Our search was limited to English and German language, human-subject studies published between January 1, 1980 and December 31, 2013. A total of 43 articles were identified from the initial search, and after taking into account exclusion criteria, only three studies remained investigating the risk factors for hand eczema in the general and in high-risk populations (e.g. bakers, hairdressers, dental technicians). The extracted data were pooled and analysed by standard statistical methods. The studies meeting inclusion criteria consisted of one cohort study and two cross-sectional studies based on a total of 4.113 subjects with hand dermatitis and 34.875 subjects without hand dermatitis. While one of the studies had reported a significant association between hand dermatitis and smoking, the meta-analysis did not confirm this finding (OR 0.99; 95% CI 0.88-1.11). However, heterogeneity across studies was high (I(2) = 72%). Our meta-analysis did not show tobacco smoking to be a risk factor for hand dermatitis. However, these results depend mainly on two large studies from one country. From present data, it cannot be excluded that smoking may influence the course of hand dermatitis. Even though smoking does not seem to be associated with hand dermatitis, it may still negatively influence the course of the disease.

Occupational risk factors for hand dermatitis among professional cleaners in Spain

Dermatitis is an important health outcome for workers whose jobs put them in contact with irritants or sensitizing agents. We conducted an analysis of data from the Epidemiological Study on the Risk of Asthma in Cleaning Workers 2 (EPIASLI2) to assess worksites and cleaning products as risk factors for hand dermatitis among professional cleaning workers. We distributed 4993 questionnaires to employees of 37 cleaning companies, and used data from 818 (16%) respondents who provided information about skin symptoms and cleaning-related exposures. We assessed associations between the frequencies of worksite and cleaning product exposures and a symptom-based definition of hand dermatitis among current cleaning workers (n = 693) and a comparison population (n = 125). Hand dermatitis was reported by 28% of current cleaning workers, versus 18% of the comparison population, and was associated with cleaning outdoor areas and schools, and the use of hydrochloric acid [prevalence ratio (PR) 1.92, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.22-3.02] and dust mop products (PR 1.75, 95% CI 1.11-2.75). Professional cleaning workers may not be sufficiently protected from cutaneous disease at work. Future research should further investigate the roles of multiple product exposures and personal protective equipment.

Hand dermatitis among university hospital nursing staff with or without atopic eczema: assessment of risk factors

Nurses are prone to develop hand dermatitis. Although an atopic constitution has been identified as a genetic risk factor, the behavioural risk factors associated with hand dermatitis in wet work conditions have not been fully explored. This study aimed to clarify the impact of atopic eczema (fulfilling the diagnostic criteria during the past 1 year) on the occurrence of hand dermatitis and to identify the behavioural risk factors among non-atopic nurses with hand dermatitis. From August 2007 to July 2009, nurses from Kaohsiung Medical University Hospital were recruited. The associations between different risk factors and hand dermatitis were documented. In addition, the behavioural risk factors among non-atopic nurses were evaluated via observational study. One thousand one hundred and thirty-two nurses participated in the first part of the study, which revealed that individuals with atopic eczema had a 3.76-fold increased risk for hand dermatitis. However, among 248 nurses with hand dermatitis, only 43 had atopic eczema. The observational study performed on 140 non-atopic nurses identified frequency of hand washing as the behavioural risk factor associated with hand dermatitis. Although atopic eczema is the major risk factor for hand dermatitis, those with atopic eczema constitute only 17% of nurses with hand dermatitis. Decreasing hand washing frequency is the most effective strategy to reduce the occurrence of hand dermatitis among non-atopic nurses.

Prevalence of Hand Dermatitis in Inpatient Nurses at a United States Hospital

Hand dermatitis is a significant problem among inpatient nurses. Accurate population-based data on the prevalence and risk factors for hand dermatitis in this group are lacking. To determine the prevalence of hand dermatitis in inpatient nurses at a US hospital. Each nursing unit in a single hospital was visited twice by a single physician. All nurses working at the time of each visit were questioned and examined. No nurses were enrolled twice. Fifty-five percent (92 of 167) of the nurses had hand dermatitis. Among intensive care unit (ICU) nurses, the prevalence was 65% (35 of 54); among non-ICU nurses, the prevalence was 50% (57 of 113). In nurses with self-reported atopic dermatitis, the prevalence was 71% (12 of 17); in nurses without self-reported atopic dermatitis, it was 53% (80 of 150). Data collection on variables such as hand hygiene and glove use relied on subject recall and was considered unreliable. There was a low prevalence of atopic patients. Hand dermatitis affects over 50% of inpatient nurses. Hand dermatitis appears to be more common in the ICU setting and in nurses with a self-reported history of atopy.

Epidemiology of hand dermatitis among rural nursing students in mainland China: results from a preliminary study

Although hand dermatitis (HD) is known to affect nursing students worldwide, no studies of this disease have yet been conducted in China. Similarly, rural populations are often neglected in international research. A preliminary study of female students from both grades of a hospital-based nursing school was conducted in Hebei Province, China, approximately 280 km south of Beijing. There were 27 students from the 2nd year of the course (47.4%) and 30 students from the 3rd year (52.6%). The study protocol involved an anonymous questionnaire distributed to a convenience sample of both grades from the nursing school. Statistical differences in prevalence by year of study were calculated using Fisher's exact test for discrete variables and One-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) for continuous variables. Statistical associations between HD and demographic items were investigated using the chi2 test. Where statistical association with HD were identified, simple logistic regression was also performed to establish a basic risk magnitude. Results were compared with similar populations of student nurses from previous studies in Australia, Japan, Denmark, the Netherlands and Germany. HD prevalence fell from 29.6% in the 2nd year to 13.3% in the 3rd year and averaged 21.1% across both grades. Systemic allergic disease among family members was found to be statistically associated with HD (p < 0.05). Overall, our preliminary study showed that HD probably affects Chinese nursing students at rates similar to that of their Japanese counterparts, but at a higher rate than students in other investigations from Germany, Holland and Australia. The identification of familial allergic disease as a possible risk factor for HD was also novel. The investigation was conducted as a preliminary investigation, and as such, our results need to be treated with caution. Further research is recommended to more carefully elucidate the prevalence of HD among larger groups of Chinese nursing students.

Background: The etiologic diagnosis of hand dermatitis (HD) is often difficult. Knowledge of the relationship between atopy and nickel sensitivity as risk factors for HD is limited. Objective: To compare irritant contact dermatitis, allergic contact dermatitis, and dyshidrotic eczema relative to personal atopy, patch-testing results, occupation, and clinical patterns. Methods: From patients referred for patch testing, 714 consecutive individuals with HD were retrospectively studied. Results: Half of the patients had eczema confined to the palms. The dorsal pattern was more prevalent in atopic patients, compared to nonatopic patients. Irritant contact dermatitis was the most frequent diagnosis (55.3%), followed by allergic contact dermatitis (24.4%) and dyshidrotic eczema (20.3%). Among housewives, health workers, and mechanics, irritants were of much greater importance than allergens whereas among hairdressers and bricklayers, the opposite was found. The prevalence of personal atopy did not differ significantly between different types of HD. Nickel sensitivity was much less frequent in irritant contact dermatitis than in allergic contact dermatitis or dyshidrotic eczema. The distribution of clinical patterns was similar. Conclusion: This study suggests that different etiologic diagnoses of HD cannot be distinguished by clinical pattern, prevalence of personal atopy, or nickel-sensitivity.

Occupational hand dermatitis in food industry apprentices: results of a 3-year follow-up cohort study.

The aim of this prospective follow-up study was to quantify the impact of hand dermatitis (HD) in bakers, confectioners and bakery shop assistants, and to investigate related risk factors. Bakers', confectioners' and bakery-shop assistants were included in a prospective follow-up study in the region of East Thuringia starting in August 1996. At the beginning of their vocational training 91 apprentices were interviewed and examined in a standardised way. Follow-up examinations and interviews were done after 6 months (n = 79), 12 months (n = 63) and at the end of the training (n = 69) after 36 months. In their case histories 3.3% (n = 3) of the apprentices reported previous HD in childhood and adolescence. The first assessment after 2 to 4 weeks of vocational training revealed HD in 17.5% (n = 16) of the individuals. At the follow-up examination after 6 months, point prevalence of HD was 29.1% (n = 23), after 12 months 27.0% (n = 17) and after 36 months 27.5% (n = 19). Mild to moderate irritant contact dermatitis was the most frequent finding. Finally, an atopic skin diathesis (> 10 points, "atopy score") (OR = 4.89; CI 95% 1.15-20.79), previous HD (OR = 41.1; CI 95% 4.99-339.13) as well as flexural dermatitis (OR = 6.8; CI 95% 1.72-27.22) proved to be predictive factors for the development of HD. No association was found to respiratory atopy (OR = 1.29; CI 95% 0.35-4.7) and metal sensitisation (OR = 1.1; CI 95% 0.29-4.35). Exogenous irritant factors did not show a strong association towards a risk increase. Wet work in general, as well as distinct occupational tasks showed only a tendency for being a risk factor for HD. However, leisure time activities, especially house building and rebuilding (OR = 5.4; CI 95% 1.05-27.81), were associated with an elevated risk. Endogenous and exogenous factors contribute to the development of HD in bakers' and confectioners' apprentices.

Susceptibility to and incidence of hand dermatitis in a cohort of apprentice hairdressers and nurses.

The role of atopic constitution, contact sensitization, transepidermal water loss, and dry skin in the development of hand dermatitis was investigated in a prospective study of 74 apprentice hairdressers and 111 apprentice nurses. Base-line measurements included a questionnaire on personal characteristics and anamnestic information, examination of hand skin, measurements of transepidermal water loss, patch tests, and prick tests. The condition of the hands, previous exposure, and transepidermal water loss were followed at intervals of four to six weeks. Cox proportional hazard models were used in the statistical analysis. The average incidence rate of hand dermatitis was 32.8 cases per 100 person-years for the hairdressers and 14.5 cases per 100 person-years for the nurses. The rate ratio of having a dry versus normal skin type was 7.3 for the hairdressers [95% confidence interval (95% CI) 2.2-24.3] and 1.7 for the nurses (95% CI 0.5-6.4). Apprentice nurses with a history of (atopic) mucosal symptoms had a 3.4-fold increased incidence rate of hand dermatitis (95% CI 1.05-11.2). The rate ratio of mucosal atopy for the apprentice hairdressers was 2.2 (95% CI 0.7-6.7). Graphic display of the results suggested an increased risk of hand dermatitis among the apprentice hairdressers with transepidermal water loss on the hand greater than 15 g.m-2.h, but the relative risk of increased transepidermal water loss was not statistically significant. The most important endogenous risk factors for hand dermatitis among the apprentice hairdressers and nurses were the presence of dry skin and a history of mucosal atopy. No relationship between increased transepidermal water loss and the risk of hand dermatitis was observed.

A retrospective cohort study on the incidence of hand dermatitis in nurses.

Data on the incidence and induction time of hand dermatitis are not available from the literature. To assist the planning of a prospective study on risk factors for hand dermatitis, a retrospective cohort study was performed in nurses and office employees to obtain a rough estimate of the incidence and induction time of hand dermatitis in these occupational groups. Data were collected by means of a self-administered questionnaire with validated questions on symptoms of hand dermatitis. The cohort consisted of 371 nurses and 111 office employees who were newly employed by a University Hospital between 1 January 1987 and 31 December 1988. Follow-up ended on 30 September 1989. Subjects who reported that symptoms had already occurred before entering the study were excluded for analysis on the incidence, leaving 298 nurses and 101 office employees for further analysis. Due to limitations of the retrospective study design, only half of the cases were able to report the exact month of occurrence of symptoms. Therefore only a rough estimate could be made of the incidence and induction period, assuming that the distribution of person-months of observation in cases with a known incidence date was equal to that of cases with unknown incidence dates. Thus, it was estimated that the overall incidence was 6.5 cases/1000 person-months in nurses and 1 case/1000 person-months in office employees.
