STATE-OF-THE-ART AND TRENDS IN THE SYSTEMATIC DEVELOPMENT OF RICH INTERNET APPLICATIONS

Rich Internet Applications (RIAs) are widely adopted Web applications that add the richer interaction, presentation, and client-side computation capabilities of desktop applications to the Web. However, the evolution from Web applications towards RIAs comes at the cost of increased complexity in their development. For this reason, a wide variety of tools and technologies have been proposed in order to streamline their development effort. This paper investigates the current state of the art of the RIA development approaches. The review shows that the current industrial development practice lacks a comprehensive approach to RIA development, supporting all the development steps from the design to implementation, test and maintenance, and helping identifying correct design choices. This is in part due to the severe fragmentation of current RIA technologies that prevents the adoption of a commonly recognized set of best practices resulting in ad-hoc development processes. These aspects are in part treated by research methodologies and some innovative industrial solutions, but also these approaches present some limitations. The paper identifies future research directions for RIAs to fully support their development process and to support their design in a more comprehensive and systematic way, from both industrial and research perspectives.

Lo stato dell'arte dell'innovazione tecnologica per le architetture web: presente e futuro per Archeologia e Calcolatori

The paper illustrates the recent evolution of web architectures and the choices made for the web portal of ‘Archeologia e Calcolatori’. The website needed an urgent restyling to update its ASP platform, even though for 15 years it had performed its interactive work very well. Today, the ASP language is no longer supported by Microsoft and the infrastructural choices of the CNR are and will be increasingly oriented towards the world of open source and LAMP architectures (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP/Phyton). For this reason, a transformation was not only suggested, but vital. It was therefore decided to completely renew the website, a task consisting of about 70 physical pages to be rewritten in PHP. This work transformation has helped to pave the way for new technologies that today are modifying the web architecture of the entire WWW and that will soon allow us to implement new services and functions. Particular attention was paid to the most significant phenomena in the innovative technological panorama of Web Information Systems, with particular emphasis on the Semantic Databases and the new RIA (Rich Internet Application) technologies, the latter a splendid evolution of client-side web architectures.

RIA기반의 웹 콘텐츠 관리에 관한 설계 및 구현

In this paper, design and implementation of RIA(: Rich Internet Application) technology, a CMS based on either of the Adobe Flex framework. Flex existing HTML + CSS + Javascript, etc. it can be easily added to a variety of visual components on a markup language consisting allow you to implement a more dynamic website. The HTTP request is processed using the Spring Framework of MVC based. Spring Framework provides a number of services for the development of a dynamic website to open source framework for the Java platform. It is being used as a standard-based technology for e-government framework used to develop recommendations and Republic of Korea during the Web service public institutions. Extensive production becomes increasingly thin web can be more efficiently managed, and will provide convenience to the user.

A web-based, collaborative modeling, simulation, and parallel computing environment for electromechanical systems

Complex electromechanical system is usually composed of multiple components from different domains, including mechanical, electronic, hydraulic, control, and so on. Modeling and simulation for electromechanical system on a unified platform is one of the research hotspots in system engineering at present. It is also the development trend of the design for complex electromechanical system. The unified modeling techniques and tools based on Modelica language provide a satisfactory solution. To meet with the requirements of collaborative modeling, simulation, and parallel computing for complex electromechanical systems based on Modelica, a general web-based modeling and simulation prototype environment, namely, WebMWorks, is designed and implemented. Based on the rich Internet application technologies, an interactive graphic user interface for modeling and post-processing on web browser was implemented; with the collaborative design module, the environment supports top-down, concurrent modeling and team cooperation; additionally, service-oriented architecture–based architecture was applied to supply compiling and solving services which run on cloud-like servers, so the environment can manage and dispatch large-scale simulation tasks in parallel on multiple computing servers simultaneously. An engineering application about pure electric vehicle is tested on WebMWorks. The results of simulation and parametric experiment demonstrate that the tested web-based environment can effectively shorten the design cycle of the complex electromechanical system.

Re-engineering legacy Web applications into RIAs by aligning modernization requirements, patterns and RIA features

Rich Internet Applications (RIAs) have become a common platform for Web developments. Its adoption has been accelerated thanks to different factors, among others, the appearance of patterns for typical RIA behaviors and the extension of different Model Driven Web Engineering methodologies to introduce RIA concepts. The real fact is that more and more developers are switching to RIA technologies and, thus, the modernization of legacy Web applications into RIAs has become a trend topic. However, this modernization process lacks of a systematic approach. Currently, it is done in an ad hoc manner, being expensive and error-prone. This work presents a systematic process to modernize legacy Web applications into RIAs. The process is based on the use of traceability matrices that relate modernization requirements, RIA features and patterns. Performing some operations on these matrices, they provide the analyst with the necessary information about the suitability of a pattern or set of patterns to address a given requirement. This work also introduces two measures, the degree of requirement realization and the degree of pattern realization, which are used to discuss the pattern selection. Finally, the applicability of the approach is evaluated by using it in several Web systems.

레저보트 생산공정정보 기반의 공장 레이아웃 설계 시스템 개발

The marine leisure industry in Korea has been the focus of the power of economic growth and the creation of jobs in recent years. In this regard, many studies concerning marine leisure are on-going in various fields. In this paper, developed a layout system and algorithm can resolve the factory and facility layout problem. For a layout design of leisure-boat factories, the leisure-boat production process is analyzed in order to derive standard production space elements for the layout of the factory. Based on the results, a draft design of the factory layout is carried out based on the manpower planning data, as well as the characteristics and relationships of each process data. A layout design of this paper can be verified through a factory simulation solution and we suggest the verification method using a SBD(simulation based design) methodology. The layout system takes into account the user's accessibility and extendibility, so it is web-oriented and uses RIA (rich Internet Application) technology. Furthermore, the system and layout algorithm of this paper are verified with samples data that show the efficient factory arrangement and practical application method.

원양어선 항해정보를 위한 RIA기반의 웹 어플리케이션 설계 및 구현

원양어선을 보유한 회사에서 조업 중인 어선의 항해정보를 파악하기 위해 기존의 수작업에 의한 항해 현황판을 개선할 필요가 있다. 본 논문에서는 인터넷에 연결된 PC 또는 DID(Digital-Information Display)를 통해 선박 항해 위경도 표시 및 어획량 등 각종 항해 정보를 지도기반에서 visual하게 display하도록 설계한다. DB에 저장된 항해중인 37척의 원양어선 항해정보를 Flash 기술 기반의 RIA(rich Internet application)를 통해 역동적으로 화면구현이 가능한 Web Application 구축에 중점을 두었다. 다수의 어선상태를 한 화면에서 실시간으로 파악할 수 있기 때문에 항해정보를 모니터링하고, 의사결정을 신속히 가능하게 함으로 운영자 및 사용자에게 정보사용의 만족도를 높일 수 있었다. The company which have deep-sea fishing vessel have to improve their voyage dashboard that was operating by manually to grasp sailing information of fishing vessel. This thesis design sailing information that is ship location on the globe, a catch of fish, and line of longitude and latitude to display on the map more visually by using on-line PC or DID (Digital Information Display). Thesis considered about designing web application which is available to visualize sailing information of 37 deep-sea fishing vessels in operation by using Flash-based RIA technology. This system was improving operator's and administrator's satisfaction of using information because, It make possible not only to grasp status of many vessels in one display but also to monitoring situation and deciding process.

Use of a Rich Internet Application Solution to Present Medical Images

Browser with Rich Internet Application (RIA) Web pages could be a powerful user interface for handling sophisticated data and applications. Then the RIA solutions would be a potential method for viewing and manipulating the most data generated in clinical processes, which can accomplish the main functionalities as general picture archiving and communication system (PACS) viewing systems. The aim of this study is to apply the RIA technology to present medical images. Both Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) and non-DICOM data can be handled by our RIA solutions. Some clinical data that are especially difficult to present using PACS viewing systems, such as ECG waveform, pathology virtual slide microscopic image, and radiotherapy plan, are as well demonstrated. Consequently, clinicians can use browser as a unique interface for acquiring all the clinical data located in different departments and information systems. And the data could be presented appropriately and processed freely by adopting the RIA technologies.

A Remote Robot Control System Based on RIA and Flex Platform

A remote robot control system was introduced, which is based on RIA (Rich Internet Application) technology and Flex platform. The system is comprised of two parts, which are the robot control module and the design module for foreground Web page application. This paper introduced the functions of each sub block, as well as the design of the programs. Meanwhile, the construction of the whole Web Service system has been specifically outlined. By using Flex technology, the system realized an asynchronous communication between Web and Web Service components， so that the real-time capacity has been greatly enhanced.

Engineering rich internet applications with a model-driven approach

Rich Internet Applications (RIAs) have introduced powerful novel functionalities into the Web architecture, borrowed from client-server and desktop applications. The resulting platforms allow designers to improve the user's experience, by exploiting client-side data and computation, bidirectional client-server communication, synchronous and asynchronous events, and rich interface widgets. However, the rapid evolution of RIA technologies challenges the Model-Driven Development methodologies that have been successfully applied in the past decade to traditional Web solutions. This paper illustrates an evolutionary approach for incorporating a wealth of RIA features into an existing Web engineering methodology and notation. The experience demonstrates that it is possible to model RIA application requirements at a high-level using a platform-independent notation, and generate the client-side and server-side code automatically. The resulting approach is evaluated in terms of expressive power, ease of use, and implementability.
