Avoiding arithmetic, or the material culture of not learning mathematics

This article describes items in the Science Museum, London, that have been invented for the purpose of avoiding mental calculation. As far as possible they are assessed as to whether or not they could be regarded as successful. They are also discussed in the context of the perennial debate as to whether avoiding arithmetic is desirable or not. The article is based on a talk given to a BSHM meeting on the Mechanisation of Mathematics, held at Rewley House, Oxford, in 2008.

The poetic life of James Clerk Maxwell

This article is the edited text of a talk given at the BSHM weekend on Mathematics and Fiction held at Rewley House, Oxford, in May 2009. Examples of Maxwell's poetry are discussed in the context of a biographical sketch. It is argued that not only was Maxwell a very good poet, but that his poetry enriches our view of his life and its intellectual context.

Postgraduate diploma in evidence based health care (EBHC)

H ealth professionals in full time or part time employment, after completing the certificate in evidence based health care. I first completed the certificate course and then the diploma course at Rewley House in Oxford (September 2000 to September 2002). I was in year 4 and 5 of my specialist registrar training in obstetrics and gynaecology. I did it to gain a thorough understanding of evidence based medicine and health care. I also wanted grounding in evidence based medicine and research methods in health care. About 12 hours of study each week. Display, Status and the Vernacular Tradition

The seventeenth century saw a transformation of vernacular architecture. It is argued here that this transformation may in part be explained by a changing view of how the house should express the standing of its owner. The sixteenth century had seen the introduction of renaissance architectural detail as a symbol of education, status and power. In the seventeenth century, a more complete architectural language was developed at a high social level, which extended beyond detail to embrace the overall form of the house. It is argued here that the loss of local vernacular traditions may have been due to a simultaneous weakening of old structures of deference and authority, which would have made possible the spread of the new style by freeing it of its status associations. By the eighteenth century, vernacular building had come to consist of a number of regional variations on a national style, and associations with status had been replaced by concern for stylistic correctness.The following is a revised version of a paper given at a conference at Rewley House, Oxford in November 2001.

COSHH and the Printed Circuit Industry

This paper is a digest of a series of presentations on this subject prepared and delivered by the author at a number of courses on Advanced Printed Circuit Manufacture arranged by the Institute of Interconnection Technology at Rewley House in Oxford over the past year. COSHH is a very complex set of regulations and, because of their importance to the industry and the extent of the penalties involved for non‐compliance, it is intended that these lectures will be repeated, and may form the subject of a one‐day symposium in the near future.
