Switching Spin‐States: Spin Crossover vs. Coordination‐Induced Spin‐State Switching

AbstractSwitchable molecular materials have continued to attract the interest of chemists and physicists for decades. A prominent example are spin crossover complexes, where numerous textbooks, review articles, and special issues are available. A highly interesting alternative is the coordination‐induced spin‐state switching. In this concept, we will compare the two spin‐state switching mechanisms and discuss common aspects and differences. Additionally, a short overview of coordination‐induced spin state switching will be given.

How to apply Premium Remedium in the Taxation Sector

Criminal law enforcement against tax crimes in Indonesia has raised debates regarding applying the premium remedium or ultimum remedium principle. This study explores the legal issues arising from this change, including the submission of a judicial review of Article 39 paragraph (1) letters d and i by a taxpayer, which is considered to have a premium remedium nuance. This article examines the application of criminal law to tax crimes in Indonesia in the context of the self-assessment system and the amended regulations. With a normative approach, this study aims to assess whether criminal law in tax crimes tends to be more on the ultimum remedium or premium remedium principle, and to highlight the harmonization between the self-assessment system and criminal law enforcement. This study finds that the application of criminal law to tax crimes in Indonesia tends to follow the ultimum remedium principle, where criminal sanctions are used as a last resort after administrative measures are ineffective. Despite the elimination of Article 13A in the KUP Law which has raised debates regarding the application of premium remedium, law enforcement still emphasizes taxpayer compliance in the self-assessment system. In addition, the KUP Law also accommodates the termination of investigations in the interests of state revenue if taxpayers are willing to pay their tax obligations.

Outcomes and complications of transvenous implantable cardioverter defibrillator systems in the pediatric population: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Abstract Background Implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs) are an important therapy for prevention of sudden cardiac death (SCD). Data on transvenous (TV) ICD therapy rates, complications, and system survival in children ≤ 21 years is limited by absolute numbers and inclusion of adults with congenital heart disease. Purpose To determine ICD therapy rates and complications in pediatric patients ≤ 21 years of age. Methods A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) statement. Medline, Embase, PubMed Ahead-of-Print and in-process records, and Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews were searched for full-text articles on pediatric ICD. Articles were assessed for inclusion by two authors via a consensus process; the exclusion criteria included: case reports, review articles, abstracts, editorials, articles not in English, articles solely on epicardial or subcutaneous leads, articles on unrelated topics, articles with <50% ICD leads, and articles with any patients >21 years old. Data were extracted by 1 author and verified by a 2nd author. Meta-analysis of aggregate data was performed, where possible. Random effects models were used for pooled inferences. All reported rates are annualized rates based on reported follow-up times in each study. Results Of 1325 articles, 23 met all inclusion and no exclusion criteria (Figure) representing 1700 patients implanted from 1987-2020. The average age of patients was 12.8 years (95% confidence interval [CI]: 11.9 – 13.7) with weight of 51.1 kg (95% CI: 42.2 – 60.0) (Table). Primary prevention was the indication in 56.4 % (95% CI: 45.0% – 67.7%). Only 14.8% (95% CI: 10.6% – 19.0%) of the patients had congenital heart disease while 22.6% (95% CI: 15.8% – 29.3%) had long QT syndrome. The annualized rate of appropriate shock was 7.0% (95% CI: 5.6% – 8.8%) and the rate of inappropriate shock was 4.8% (95% CI: 3.8% – 6.0%). Annualized rates of reported adverse events included lead failure: 2.3% (95% CI: 1.6% – 3.3%) and infection: 0.8% (95% CI: 0.4% – 1.6%), which could have led to system revision: 4.4% (95% CI: 2.1% – 9.4%). The all-cause mortality rate was 0.8% (95% CI: 0.6% – 1.2%) across 17 studies. In 9 studies with 719 patients, the heart transplant rate was 1.6% (95% CI: 0.6% – 3.9%). Conclusion In this first systematic review and meta-analysis of ICDs in pediatric patients, ICD therapy was effective for prevention of SCD with a 7.0% annualized rate of appropriate ICD shocks. This is comparable to the annualized rate of appropriate ICD shock for secondary prevention of SCD in adult randomized controlled trials. Most common adverse events in the pediatric population were lead failure and system revision. Further refinements in patient selection criteria for implantation and improvements in lead and device technology are needed for pediatric patients.FigureTable

Mapping the Path to Low-Carbon Behaviour: A Systematic Review of Trends, Gaps, and Future Directions

It is essential to conduct research on low-carbon behaviour in order to address global climate change and promote sustainable development. This study conducts a thorough examination of a bibliometric analysis of the existing literature in this field. We analysed 129 papers from the Web of Science Core Collection database to conduct a study on the concept of “low-carbon behaviour”. Review articles, proceedings papers, and editorial materials were all excluded. This investigation examines a diverse array of research environment factors, including the most highly ranked publications, publication trends, significant publishers, and patterns in citations and publications over time. The primary institutional contributors in the discipline and the most influential works worldwide are also mentioned. The application of advanced visualisation techniques, such as wordcloud representations, the spatial distribution of research output, and co-occurrence and overlay networks, is employed to generate maps of keyword relationships and collaboration networks using Bibliometrix Stable Version, VOSviewer 1.6.20, and Scimago Graphica Beta 1.0.45. This multi-modal methodology enables a comprehensive investigation of significant research issues and emerging directions in low-carbon behavioural studies. This study contributes to the ongoing endeavours to promote sustainable development and mitigate climate change by conducting a comprehensive evaluation of the current state of research and establishing a robust framework for future investigations into low-carbon behavioural patterns and behaviours.

Rethinking replacement, rebound and environmental impact in reuse practice

Despite the current emphasis on reuse as a primary strategy for realising more circular economic systems, researchers have questioned the assumed environmental benefits of the practice – arguing that reuse can result in unintended rebound effects that diminish or outweigh environmental gains. This article reviews studies focused on potential rebound effects in reuse practices – not as a means to re-adjudicate the environmental virtues of reuse – but rather to critically examine common assumptions about the people and practices that animate reuse markets. The article thus responds to calls for additional research on the behavioural dimensions of reuse in more circular economic systems – and the associated implications for modelling environmental impact. We draw on an in-depth study of 30 active participants in direct product reuse markets to theorise everyday circularity from a critical social science perspective. We argue, based on our observations, that environmental impact models of reuse should not assume that: (1) all forms of product reuse are the same; (2) buyers and sellers are driven primarily by price logics; and (3) new goods are the default preference. We find reuse markets to be much more fluid than imagined by environmental impact models and argue that these insights are particularly important to consider as we approach the end of cheap nature and the costs of overconsumption are increasingly clear.

Understanding abscisic acid-mediated stress signaling to affect rice development under stress

IntroductionRice is a vital staple food for many countries, and its yield is known to be significantly affected by various abiotic stresses, which are expected to intensify with climate change, posing a threat to global food security. Abscisic acid (ABA), a crucial plant growth regulator, plays a crucial role in plant responses to these abiotic stresses. It influences several processes, such as seed dormancy, leaf gas exchange, reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging, ion toxicity reduction, and root elongation, all of which contribute to enhancing plant survival under stress.MethodsThis article reviews recent research on ABA-mediated gene responses and expressions involved in rice plant architecture and its response to abiotic stress.Results and discussionAbscisic acid responses were primarily driven by changes in gene expression. Expression analyses of the gene related to ABA biosynthesis or catabolism indicated several changes in plant architecture, such as changes in leaf angle, delayed flowering, and modifications in growth regulators. Additionally, tolerance-related mechanisms, such as increased ROS scavenging, reduced membrane leakage, and vacuolar compartmentation of toxic radicals, were activated under single or multiple stress conditions. While these adaptations may improve plant survival and yield sustainability under stress, they may not necessarily enhance yield potential in environments affected by drought, salinity, or heat stress. ABA expression was also associated with improved pollen viability, grain-filling potential, and seed setting under abiotic stresses such as heat, which could enhance seed yield in such challenging environments.

Future of Uremic Toxin Management

During the progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD), the retention of uremic toxins plays a key role in the development of uremic syndrome. Knowledge about the nature and biological impact of uremic toxins has grown exponentially over the past decades. However, the science on reducing the concentration and effects of uremic toxins has not advanced in parallel. Additionally, the focus has remained for too long on dialysis strategies, which only benefit the small fraction of people with CKD who suffer from advanced kidney disease, whereas uremic toxicity effects are only partially prevented. This article reviews recent research on alternative methods to counteract uremic toxicity, emphasizing options that are also beneficial in the earlier stages of CKD, with a focus on both established methods and approaches which are still under investigation or at the experimental stage. We will consequently discuss the preservation of kidney function, the prevention of cardiovascular damage, gastro-intestinal interventions, including diet and biotics, and pharmacologic interventions. In the final part, we also review alternative options for extracorporeal uremic toxin removal. The future will reveal which of these options are valid for further development and evidence-based assessment, hopefully leading to a more sustainable treatment model for CKD than the current one.

Analysis of Physiological Oxygen Concentrations in Different Abdominal Fat Layers by Body Mass Index.

Physiological oxygen concentration in adipose tissue is closely linked to metabolic disorders such as chronic inflammation and insulin resistance. However, the nature of the variation in the oxygen levels of adipose tissue with body mass index (BMI) and depths of abdominal fat remain unclear. Therefore, this study aimed to elucidate the patterns of oxygen concentration in adipose tissue layers according to BMI. In this study, patients undergoing abdominal fat removal surgery were divided into the normal-weight (NW) or overweight-obese (OW) groups based on their BMI. Oxygen concentrations in abdominal superficial (sSAT) and deep subcutaneous adipose tissue (dSAT) were measured. The oxygen consumption rate, mean cell area, and capillary density in both tissue layers were compared between the two groups. Furthermore, the interaction between these three variables, BMI, and adipose tissue oxygen concentration, was analyzed using linear regression. A total of 42 patients were recruited in this study and we observed that oxygen concentration in the sSAT was significantly lower than in the dSAT, irrespective of BMI. In terms of the oxygen concentration in the dSAT, OW's was significantly lower than that of NW's. Linear regression analysis revealed a significant correlation between dSAT oxygen concentration and BMI, mean adipocyte area, and vascular density. Individuals who are obese have significantly lower oxygen levels in the deep abdominal adipose tissue, and this is influenced by BMI, adipocyte area, and capillary density. The German Status Report on Climate Change and Health 2023

Abstract The German Status Report on Climate Change and Health was coordinated by the Robert Koch Institute, Germany’s public health institute, and published in 2023 through a collaboration of approximately 100 authors from 30 German institutions. It is an update of a similar report from 2010 and includes review articles and syntheses on the effects of climate change on human health through various influences such as heat, extreme weather, UV radiation, air pollutants and allergens, as well as the effect of climate change on infectious diseases through vector-borne, water-borne or food-borne pathogens. Literature reviews on the potential impact on antimicrobial resistance and mental health explore less well researched effects of climate change on health. The report discusses climate change communication and climate justice as cross-cutting issues and closes with an analysis of the options for action recommended throughout the preceding chapters. While the coordination of this report was funded by the German Federal Ministry of Health, the content was compiled by an advisory board of scientists and the authors recruited by them. The status report is published as 14 individual scientific papers in three issues of the peer-reviewed Journal of Health Monitoring and is available open access in English and in German in order to reach a large scientific audience. Besides the scientific audience, another target group are local authorities contributing towards adaptation and mitigation measures. Insights from the report are being communicated by diverse channels specifically to this latter group and are taken into consideration in the process of shaping the German Strategy for Adaptation to Climate Change.

Scanning the horizon- environmental health indicator surveillance

Abstract Aim This work aimed to conduct a comprehensive literature review with narrative synthesis of evidence in relation to the surveillance of environmental health indicators by Public Health agencies internationally. This will strengthen the All-Hazards approach to Health Protection in Ireland. Methods The project proposal was registered on PROSPERO. Preferred Reporting Systems for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) guidelines were followed. A systematic search was conducted across five databases. In addition, relevant websites, reference lists and the grey literature were searched. Data were extracted following TIDieR-PHP guidelines. Risk of bias was considered and quality appraisal was performed using SANRA and AGREE-HS tools. A narrative synthesis of the evidence was completed. Results 12 papers were included in the final review. Four were narrative review articles describing European and worldwide initiatives and the remaining eight described a single health system. Only three papers were deemed high quality. The number of indicators monitored varied widely from one in Italy to over 400 in the USA. The most established programmes described the use of a framework such as Drivers-Pressures-States-Exposures-Effects-Actions (DPSEEA) and indicator selection criteria were applied. The papers described a variety of public health actions arising from the surveillance of environmental health indicators. The knowledge provided by this review can inform the implementation process. Establishment of a project team, and beginning with monitoring one domain is suggested. Air quality is the most frequently monitored domain internationally. The DPSEEA framework is recommended, and Briggs’ indicator selection criteria should be applied to any indicator under consideration. The system should measure both hazard and outcome measures. Finally, meaningful public health action should result from the monitoring. Key messages • Environmental health indicator surveillance is essential to all-hazards health protection. • Few public health agencies internationally are systematically monitoring environmental health outcomes.

Perioperative Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS) for Anaesthetists: Is It Time to Introduce Formal Training?

This article reviews point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) in the perioperative period. Ultrasound-guided techniques for regional anaesthesia and vascular access have been well-established in anaesthesia for many years. However, integration of whole-body POCUS into UK anaesthetic practice remains limited. There is a growing body of evidence highlighting the benefits of POCUS throughout the perioperative period. Widespread use may help to improve patient care in anaesthesia.

QUALIDADE DE VIDA DE IDOSOS COM DOENÇAS CRÔNICAS

Introduction: The trend of an aging population has highlighted the increasing importance of understanding the quality of life of elderly individuals, especially those with chronic diseases. This quality of life extends far beyond the management of medical conditions and is essential for ensuring the well-being of the elderly and, consequently, their families. Objective: This review aims to explore the quality of life in elderly individuals and how chronic diseases impact it. Method: This work is an integrative bibliographic review that includes both original and review articles to select relevant information for the results of this research. Results: Chronic diseases necessitate greater medical attention, particularly when diagnosed in the elderly, as they not only affect the individual physically but also significantly impact their emotional well-being. Conclusion: To ensure the quality of life for the elderly, it is crucial to adopt healthy habits well before reaching old age, as well as to emphasize the importance of medical and psychological monitoring and family support during this life stage.

Assessing the Prospects and Risks of Delivering Sustainable Urban Development Through 3D Concrete Printing Implementation

The article presents the results of a comprehensive study of the use of 3D Concrete printing (3DCP) technology to create urban infrastructure facilities according to sustainable development principles. The work includes a study of scientific articles on the subject area under consideration, a survey of additive construction market participants, as well as an analysis and generalization of promising areas for technology development and methods for improving the quality of objects erected using 3DCP. As part of the conducted literature review, publications included in the Scopus database for the period 2015–2024 were selected for analysis using the keywords ‘Sustainable development + 3DCP’ and ‘Sustainable construction + 3DCP’. The following conclusions were made: (i) the most popular publications are review articles about the development of materials and technologies for 3DCP and (ii) the most sought-after are the studies in the field of partial application of 3DCP technology, existing equipment and materials for 3DCP, and assessment of the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of 3DCP use. For this purpose, a questionnaire was developed consisting of three blocks: equipment and technologies; structures and materials for 3DCP; the ecology and economics of 3DCP applicability. As a result, four main risks have been identified, which represent promising areas for 3DCP development.

Integration Approaches in Forensic Portrait Examination

The article reviews some actual issues of the theory and practice of the production of forensic portrait examinations: the tight deadlines of the preliminary investigation, the increased time expenditures to produce forensic video examination, the need for an integrated approach to the training of forensic portrait experts. The author proposes to revise some approaches to the training of forensic experts in the field of forensic portrait examinations. Along with the possibility of a comprehensive forensic examination, taking into consideration current needs of practice, more attention needs to be paid to software application for processing photo and video images processing in order to improve visual perception of the information displayed and to study montage marks and their detectability. All this will contribute to the evolvement of a portrait examiner as a specialist of double competence.

Survey on haptic technologies for virtual reality applications during COVID-19

<p>This paper presents a comprehensive survey on the advancements and applications of haptic technologies, which are methods that facilitate the sense of touch and movement, in virtual reality (VR) during the COVID-19 pandemic. It aims to identify and classify the various domains in which haptic technologies have been utilized or can be adapted to combat the unique challenges posed by the pandemic or public health emergencies in general. Existing reviews and surveys that concentrate on the applications of haptic technologies during the Covid-19 pandemic are often limited to specific domains; this survey strives to identify and consolidate all application domains discussed in the literature, including healthcare, medical training, education, social communication, and fashion and retail. Original research and review articles were collected from the Web of Science Core Collection as the main source, using a combination of keywords (like ‘haptic’, ‘haptics’, ‘touch interface’, ‘tactile’, ‘virtual reality’, ‘augmented reality’, 'Covid-19', and ‘pandemic’) and Boolean operators to refine the search and yield relevant results. The paper reviews various haptic devices and systems and discusses the technological advancements that have been made to offer more realistic and immersive VR experiences. It also addresses challenges in haptic technology in VR, including fidelity, ethical, and privacy considerations, and cost and accessibility issues.</p>

Cardiomyopathy: pathogenesis and therapeutic interventions.

Cardiomyopathy is a group of disease characterized by structural and functional damage to the myocardium. The etiologies of cardiomyopathies are diverse, spanning from genetic mutations impacting fundamental myocardial functions to systemic disorders that result in widespread cardiac damage. Many specific gene mutations cause primary cardiomyopathy. Environmental factors and metabolic disorders may also lead to the occurrence of cardiomyopathy. This review provides an in-depth analysis of the current understanding of the pathogenesis of various cardiomyopathies, highlighting the molecular and cellular mechanisms that contribute to their development and progression. The current therapeutic interventions for cardiomyopathies range from pharmacological interventions to mechanical support and heart transplantation. Gene therapy and cell therapy, propelled by ongoing advancements in overarching strategies and methodologies, has also emerged as a pivotal clinical intervention for a variety of diseases. The increasing number of causal gene of cardiomyopathies have been identified in recent studies. Therefore, gene therapy targeting causal genes holds promise in offering therapeutic advantages to individuals diagnosed with cardiomyopathies. Acting as a more precise approach to gene therapy, they are gradually emerging as a substitute for traditional gene therapy. This article reviews pathogenesis and therapeutic interventions for different cardiomyopathies.

CHALLENGES TO PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION IN THE CONTEXT OF INTERNAL MIGRATION IN UKRAINE

The article addresses the challenges faced by public administration in managing internal migration in Ukraine, driven by large-scale population movements due to the Russian-Ukrainian war, and the necessity of maintaining the stability of state institutions amidst social, economic, and demographic shifts. The purpose of the article is to identify the primary challenges confronting public administration in the context of internal migration and propose strategies to address them. To achieve this, the study employs an integrated approach, combining both quantitative and qualitative research methods. The article identifies the causes of internal migration and the key factors contributing to internal displacement: armed conflict, economic hardships, and social and environmental issues. It analyzes the main challenges to public administration in this context, including organizational difficulties, coordination problems between different levels of government, a lack of resources for effectively managing migration processes, and socio-economic challenges. It is demonstrated that there is insufficient infrastructure to provide housing, employment, and social services for internally displaced persons (IDPs), along with inadequate funding for support programs, and difficulties in integrating IDPs into new communities and fostering interaction with the local population. The article reviews state policy on internal migration, evaluates existing programs and strategies, assesses the effectiveness of current state initiatives, and highlights the barriers to implementing effective IDP policies, such as underfunding and lack of coordination. The author proposes solutions to enhance coordination and management, develop a unified migration management system, engage local communities in addressing IDP issues, increase funding and resources, expand state support programs, attract international assistance to tackle internal migration challenges, and implement legal reforms. Recommendations for improving migration management are also provided to overcome these challenges.

A Systematic Review of Literature on Student Voice and Agency in Middle Grade Contexts

This systematic review analyzes the research literature on student voice and agency in the middle grades, focusing on middle-level schools, culture, and learning environments. The idea of student voice and agency was taken up as collaborative decision-making and/or student feedback on issues related to school and pedagogy. After a comprehensive search for peer-reviewed research (2015–2024), an article review framework was developed to determine how, where, and why student voices and agency were engaged in the middle grades. Three themes characterized the research literature: (1) passive student voice and agency: researcher-driven studies to gain understanding; (2) active student voice and agency: partnering with students to improve their learning experiences; and (3) activating the inner voice and agency: helping students to reflect on their own learning. The research on student voice and agency provided information that directly and indirectly benefited students. The literature related to passive student voice and agency tended to be indirect, while active student voice and agency and activating students’ inner voice and agency tended to provide tangible and observable student benefits. While the studies were responsive to different aspects of young adolescent development and included foci on students’ social/emotional development and identity, other areas were lacking—including culturally responsive teaching, international perspectives, and sense of self/peer perceptions.

Metformin: Diverse molecular mechanisms, gastrointestinal effects and overcoming intolerance in type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: A review.

Metformin, the first line treatment for patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus, has alternative novel roles, including cancer and diabetes prevention. This narrative review aims to explore its diverse mechanisms, effects and intolerance, using sources obtained by searching Scopus, PubMed and Web of Science databases, and following Scale for the Assessment of Narrative Review Articles reporting guidelines. Metformin exerts it actions through duration influenced, and organ specific, diverse mechanisms. Its use is associated with inhibition of hepatic gluconeogenesis targeted by mitochondria and lysosomes, reduction of cholesterol levels involving brown adipose tissue, weight reduction influenced by growth differentiation factor 15 and novel commensal bacteria, in addition to counteraction of meta-inflammation alongside immuno-modulation. Interactions with the gastrointestinal tract include alteration of gut microbiota, enhancement of glucose uptake and glucagon like peptide 1 and reduction of bile acid absorption. Though beneficial, they may be linked to intolerance. Metformin related gastrointestinal adverse effects are associated with dose escalation, immediate release formulations, gut microbiota alteration, epigenetic predisposition, inhibition of organic cation transporters in addition to interactions with serotonin, histamine and the enterohepatic circulation. Potentially effective measures to overcome intolerance encompasses carefully objective targeted dose escalation, prescription of fixed dose combination, microbiome modulators and prebiotics, in addition to use of extended release formulations.

Internal evaluation of medical programs is more than housework: A scoping review.

The aim of this scoping review was to explore current program evaluation practices across various medical schools. We conducted searches in MEDLINE (Ovid), Embase (Elsevier) and ERIC (ed.gov) for original research and review articles related to medical education evaluation with key words evaluation, program, medical education, pre-registration, framework, curriculum, outcomes, evaluation, quality. We followed Arksey and O'Malley's (2005) process for scoping reviews. Thirty-two articles were included. Studies were primarily concerned with either proving (n = 21) or improving efficacy of their programs (n = 11). No studies aimed at comparing programs. Nine were literature reviews. Others aimed to develop a new evaluation model (n = 7) or apply (n = 12) or validate (n = 4) an existing model (or part thereof). Twenty-two studies explicitly identified an evaluation model they had used or would recommend. Most frequently used models for evaluation were: Context-Input-Process-Product, Kirkpatrick, World Federation Medical Education, and the Standards by Joint Committee on Standards for Educational Evaluation. Overall, evaluations were learner-focused and accreditation driven with a minority considering the broader influences of program success. Program evaluation is fundamental to driving the quality of education delivered to produce workforce-ready healthcare professionals. The focus of current evaluations is on student experience and content delivery with a significant gap in the existing literature on evaluation related to staff, learner/staff well-being, equity, diversity, and meta evaluation.
