The role of alexithymia in suicide ideation among Taiwanese army military personnel: A serial mediation model investigating the effects of perceived stress and depression.

Maintaining the good mental health of Taiwanese military personnel is crucial, especially in light of incidents such as the Taiwan Strait crisis. Suicide is a leading cause of death among military personnel and alexithymia is a significant risk factor for suicidal ideation. However, the mechanisms linking alexithymia and suicidal ideation in this psychologically burdened population remain poorly understood. In total, 863 voluntary army military personnel from Taiwanese reserve brigades and combined-arms brigades were enroled between May 2020 and February 2021. Structured questionnaires about alexithymia, perceived stress, depression, suicidal ideation, and background characteristics were used. Mediation analyses were conducted to examine the serial mediation roles of perceived stress and depression in the relationship between alexithymia and suicidal ideation. Significant positive correlations were observed between alexithymia, perceived stress, depression, and suicidal ideation in bivariate analyses. Serial mediation analyses revealed that alexithymia significantly predicted higher levels of perceived stress, subsequently leading to depressive symptoms, which were associated with suicidal ideation. Depression served as a significant mediator between alexithymia and suicidal ideation. The strongest mediating effect (71.4%) was observed in the pathway from alexithymia through perceived stress and depression to suicidal ideation. Limitations included the utilization of cross-sectional data and a reliance on retrospective self-report measures. Perceived stress and depression were identified as serial mediators in the association between alexithymia and suicidal ideation. Clinically, it is crucial to prioritise interventions that target emotional regulation skills and assess the presence of alexithymia to effectively reduce suicidal ideation in military personnel.

Ecological momentary assessment of changes in eating behaviors, appetite, and other aspects of eating regulation in Roux-en-Y gastric bypass and sleeve gastrectomy patients

Bariatric surgery can have profound impacts on eating behaviors and experiences, yet most prior research studying these changes has relied on retrospective self-report measures with limited precision and susceptibility to bias. This study used smartphone-based ecological momentary assessment (EMA) to evaluate the trajectory of change in eating behaviors, appetite, and other aspects of eating regulation in 71 Roux-en-Y gastric bypass and sleeve gastrectomy patients assessed preoperatively and at 3, 6, and 12-months postoperative. For some outcomes, results showed a consistent and similar pattern for SG and RYGB where consumption of sweet and high-fat foods and hunger, desire to eat, ability to eat right now, and satisfaction with amount eaten all improved from pre-to 6-months post-surgery with some degree of deterioration at 12-months post-surgery. By contrast, other variables, largely related to hedonic hunger and craving and desire for specific foods, showed less consistent patterns that differed by surgery type. While the findings suggest an overall pattern of improvement in eating patterns following bariatric surgery, they also highlight how a return to preoperative habits may begin as early as 6 months after surgery. Additional research is needed to understand mechanisms that promote changes in eating behavior after surgery, and how best to intervene to preserve beneficial effects.

Testing reward processing models of obesity using in-the-moment assessments of subjective enjoyment of food and non-food activities

ObjectiveAlthough altered reward processing is proposed to play a key role in obesity maintenance, the role of food enjoyment and enjoyment of non-food naturally rewarding activities (“non-food enjoyment”) in obesity maintenance remains unknown. This study examined how food and non-food enjoyment were associated with baseline body mass index (BMI) and weight loss (WL) following year-long behavioral WL treatment. MethodsAt baseline, participants (MAge = 51.81; 73.8 % White, N = 279) with overweight/obesity completed a 7-day ecological momentary assessment (EMA) protocol inquiring about pleasure/enjoyment derived from eating and non-food activities over the past few hours. Participants also completed retrospective self-report measures of food/non-food enjoyment. With linear regressions, associations between EMA food/non-food enjoyment and BMI and post-treatment WL were examined. Race was included as a covariate. ResultsEMA and retrospective food/non-food enjoyment measures had modest concordance, providing preliminary psychometric support for the EMA measures. Partially consistent with hypotheses, greater EMA food enjoyment was associated with lower BMI (B = −1.03, p = .01) and with greater WL, though the latter association was not statistically significant (B = 1.15, p = .07). Exploratory analyses suggested that race was associated with food enjoyment (non-White participants had greater food enjoyment than White participants, d = 0.81, p = .005), and that race may have affected associations between food enjoyment and weight outcomes. Associations between non-food enjoyment and weight outcomes were small and nonsignificant (ps > .93). ConclusionsResults suggest enjoyment from food, but not from non-food domains, is associated with weight outcomes.

Parental invalidation and its associations with borderline personality disorder symptoms: A multivariate meta-analysis.

Childhood invalidation has been postulated to be implicated in the development of borderline personality disorder (BPD), according to the biosocial model. Despite its significance, most systematic reviews and meta-analyses have focused on examining the associations between extreme forms of invalidation, such as sexual abuse, and BPD. Nonetheless, individuals could experience mild-to-severe levels of parental invalidation, with or without abuse. This study examined the relationship between parental invalidation as an overall construct and BPD symptoms, synthesized across 21 studies (total N = 7,198). As most reviewed studies utilized retrospective self-report measures, the effect sizes derived pertained largely to the association between reported childhood parental invalidation and BPD symptoms. We conducted a multivariate meta-analysis to account for the dependence of multiple effect sizes obtained from a single study and to maintain precision in obtained effect sizes. Maternal, paternal, and overall parental invalidation were positively associated with BPD symptoms, with small-to-moderate effect sizes of .26, .23, and .25, respectively. The mean effect size of maternal invalidation was greater than that of paternal invalidation. We also investigated if the parental invalidation-BPD associations were moderated by child gender, age, and culture (degree of individualism). Only overall parental invalidation and BPD symptoms association was moderated by child's gender, with larger effect sizes found for samples with a greater proportion of males. Age and culture did not moderate the parental invalidation-BPD association. Risk of publication bias was low. Playing Pokemon Go: Increased Life Satisfaction Through More (Positive) Social Interactions.

Pokemon Go (PoGo) is a social mobile game requiring both physical activity and social interaction, and previous research has reported positive effects of PoGo on physical health. However, little research has been conducted on the effects of PoGo on social functioning and life satisfaction, which are important factors for good mental health. The current study investigated the effects of PoGo on life satisfaction and social functioning in participants with and without self-reported diagnoses of mental disorders. Participants were 434 current PoGo players aged 18–69 of diverse genders and nationalities, with a subsample (N = 138) self-reporting diagnoses of various mental disorders with impairments in social functioning. Participants provided retrospective and current self-report measures about their PoGo use, life satisfaction, social functioning (sociality and social ability) and clinical symptom severity. Results showed higher self-reported social functioning and life satisfaction since playing PoGo compared to the time period before playing, which involved a shift from negative to positive ratings. The increases in self-reported life satisfaction and sociality (but not social ability) were more pronounced for the clinical compared to the non-clinical subsample. Results also showed the effect of the social ability change on the life satisfaction change was mediated by the sociality change and moderated by the number of daily in-person player interactions (including strangers). The findings here, using subjective judgements, show that PoGo motivates social interactions and increases life satisfaction, demonstrating that social mobile gaming provides an easy to implement tool to subjectively improve social functioning. This has important implications for populations with social difficulties and reduced social motivation.

Combining implementation intentions and monetary incentives to reduce alcohol use: a failed generalization to a public bar context

ABSTRACT Background Implementation intentions have been demonstrated to reduce alcohol use in retrospective self-report measures. It remains unclear, however, whether they can moderate drinking in a challenging naturalistic context. We examined this by studying the effects of implementation intentions on alcohol use in a bar. Methods One hundred and twenty-one participants visiting a local bar were randomized over three conditions: control, motivational trigger, and motivational trigger plus implementation intentions. Those in the motivational trigger group were motivated to reduce drinking, and the combined intervention group made additional alcohol-related implementation intentions. We assessed participants’ pre- and post-intervention breath alcohol concentrations, their post-intervention drinking behavior over one hour, and measures of trait impulsivity and reward sensitivity. To predict post-intervention drinking, multiple hierarchical regression was used. Results Neither the motivational trigger nor the added implementation intentions reduced drinking. Across treatment groups, trait impulsivity predicted alcohol consumption. Conclusions The present study showed that motivational trigger and implementation intentions failed to reduce alcohol use in a naturalistic setting. Potential reasons, implications, and limitations are discussed. This first attempt demonstrates that implementation intentions aimed at moderation are not as easily implemented in a public high-risk context.

Suicide attempts among college students hospitalized for COVID-19

BackgroundSuicide is the second leading cause of death among U.S. college students. Past pandemics have been linked to increases in suicide risk, but little is known about how suicide risk relates to COVID-19 symptoms or hospitalizations. MethodsWe analyzed data from the Fall cohort of the 2020-2021 Healthy Minds Study, a cross-sectional, web-based survey of undergraduate and graduate students in the U.S. (N = 16,315). Logistic regression was used to test for associations between COVID-19 infections, hospitalizations, and symptoms severity, and suicide-related outcomes. ResultsSuicidal ideation was reported by n = 2190 (13.4%), plans by n = 885 (5.4%), and attempts by n = 209 (1.3%). The prevalence of each suicide-related outcome measure was greater among those reporting COVID-19 symptoms/diagnosis and among those with greater COVID-19 symptom severity, with a drastically greater prevalence of suicide attempts among those who were hospitalized for COVID-19, odds ratio (95% confidence interval) = 9.43 (3.87-22.95). Among respondents with suicidal ideation, 53.8% of those hospitalized for COVID-19 also made a suicide attempt, compared to 8.9% of non-infected respondents with past-year ideation. LimitationsLimitations include the use of cross-sectional data and retrospective self-report measures, which may be subject to recall biases. The response rate was low but typical of online surveys conducted during the COVID-19 pandemic. ConclusionsHospitalization for COVID-19 may be an underestimated risk factor for suicide attempts. While mechanisms remain unclear, these data suggest that college students hospitalized for COVID should be screened for suicidal thoughts and behaviors subsequent to discharge, particularly if they have pre-existing suicidal ideation.

Short-term reliability of retrospective childhood trauma reports in schizophrenia spectrum psychosis.

Childhood trauma (CT) refers to severe early life adversities, especially experiences of parental abuse and neglect. Patients with schizophrenia spectrum psychosis (SSP) report higher CT rates than the general population. As CT assessment in SSP samples has been mainly conducted retrospectively through adult recollections of childhood adverse events, reservations about the reliability and validity of these reports have arisen. We sought to explore the short-term reliability of retrospective CT reports in sixty-three patients with SSP, by assessing the concurrent validity and test-retest reliability of the data. Two CT self-report measures, the Childhood Experience of Care and Abuse Questionnaire (CECA.Q) and the Parental Bonding Instrument (PBI) were employed for this task. High concurrent validity was detected between CECA.Q antipathy scales and PBI care and overprotection scales; and between CECA.Q neglect scales and PBI care scales. High test-retest reliability was confirmed for all CECA.Q and PBI scales. Our findings indicate that retrospective CT self-report measures are a reliable means of assessing early life adversities in SSP. However, further provisions should be taken to increase the reliability of retrospective reports, especially corroboration of the events through other sources and removal of latent confounders, such as psychopathology, memory fallacies and social desirability biases.

The impact of three weeks of pre-quit varenicline on reinforcing value and craving for cigarettes in a laboratory choice procedure.

Varenicline, a partial nicotinic agonist, is theorized to attenuate pre-quit smoking reinforcement and post-quit withdrawal and craving. However, the mechanisms of action have not been fully characterized, as most studies employ only retrospective self-report measures, hypothetical indices of reinforcing value, and/or nontreatment-seeking samples. The current research examined the impact of pre-quit varenicline (vs. placebo) on laboratory measures of smoking and food (vs. water) reinforcement and craving. Participants were 162 treatment-seeking smokers enrolled in a randomized controlled trial of smoking cessation ( clinicaltrials.gov ID: NCT03262662). Participants completed two laboratory sessions: a pre-treatment session, ~ 1 week prior to beginning varenicline or placebo, and an active treatment session, after ~ 3 weeks of treatment. At each session, participants completed a laboratory choice procedure; on each of 36 trials, a lit cigarette, food item, or cup of water was randomly presented. Participants reported level of craving and spent $0.01-0.25 to have a corresponding 5-95% chance to sample the cue. As predicted, spending was significantly higher on cigarette trials than water trials, and varenicline resulted in a greater between-session decline in spending on cigarette trials (but not water) than did placebo. Cigarette craving was enhanced in the presence of smoking cues compared to water, but neither average (tonic) cigarette craving nor cue-specific cigarette craving was significantly influenced by varenicline. Food spending and craving were generally unaffected by varenicline treatment. These laboratory data from treatment-seeking smokers provide the strongest evidence to date that varenicline selectively attenuates smoking reinforcement prior to quitting.

Combining transdermal and breath alcohol assessments, real-time drink logs and retrospective self-reports to measure alcohol consumption and intoxication across a multi-day music festival.

Comprehensively investigating alcohol-related behaviours in the context of a dynamic multi-day alcohol-licensed event is important for understanding and minimising patron risk. We aimed to assess the measurement utility of implementing a multi-dimensional alcohol assessment battery using biometric data collection, real-time drink logs and retrospective self-report measures over the course of a 4-day music festival. Fourteen adults participated (n=7 male, mean age 21.9 years). Breath and transdermal alcohol concentration (BrAC and TAC, respectively) were measured using breathalysers and transdermal alcohol bracelets. A real-time drink log was completed via smartphones on initiating each drink, and a retrospective questionnaire was administered up to twice daily throughout the event (6 timepoints total). While almost all participants (92.9%) logged significantly fewer drinks in real-time than they retrospectively reported via the twice-daily questionnaires, logs provided important contextual information including the types of drinks consumed and drinking intensity. Compared to BrAC, TAC provided a better understanding of the time course of intoxication, indicating highest alcohol consumption outside of static BrAC assessment windows. However, BrAC provided a better assessment of present state: all participants were 0.00% BrAC at departure despite over two-fifths (42.9%) of the sample's last TAC reading exceeding 0.00%. As standalone assessments, each method possessed limitations. As a combined battery, they were successfully administered simultaneously, resulting in a more comprehensive overview of alcohol consumption/intoxication over the prolonged drinking session. However, the marked burden of simultaneous administration should be considered, and measures should be chosen judiciously based on research needs.

Early effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on physical activity locations and behaviors in adults living in the United States.

COVID-19 restrictions andsocial-distancing may inhibit adults from attaining recommended levels of physical activity. This study examined early impact of COVID-19 pandemic on physical activity in adults during the first two months of restrictions in the U.S.and how physical activity locations were associated with physical activity levels during this period. Adults (N=268) completed an online survey between April 10-May 25, 2020. Participants reported minutes of vigorous, moderate, and walking physical activity for past 7days (early-COVID-19) and for a typical week in February 2020 (pre-COVID-19). Adults reported locations (e.g., home/garage, parks/trails) were they were active over the past 7days. Past 12-month step count data were extracted from participants' personal smartphones. Participants (18-74years old, 22% Hispanic/Latino, 81% female) showed reductions in vigorous (Mdiff=-66.9min/week), moderate (Mdiff=-92.4min/week), walking (Mdiff-70.8min/week), and step counts (Mdiff=-2232 steps/day) from the pre- to early-COVID19 periods. Reductions in walking and steps were larger for low-income and Hispanic/Latino adults. During early-COVID19,more vigorous and moderate activity were reported by those who were active in their home/garage or driveway/yard, and more steps were recorded by those who were active on the roads in their neighborhood or at parks/trails.We observed a decline in adults' physical activity during the first two months of the COVID-19 pandemic based on retrospective self-report and device-based measures.Although these restrictions were necessary to slow the spread of the virus, data indicate that there may be unintended consequences onhealth-related behaviors.

Opening the black box of students’ text-learning processes: A process mining perspective

The current study uncovers secondary school students’ actual use of text-learning strategies during an individual learning task by means of a concurrent self-reported thinking aloud procedure. Think-aloud data of 51 participants with different learning strategy profiles, distinguished based on a retrospective self-report questionnaire (i.e., 15 integrated strategy users, 15 information organizers, 10 mental learners, and 11 limited strategy users), were analysed by means of educational process mining. Both the frequency of students’ strategy use, as well as the temporal patterns between these strategies were studied. The process mining results clearly demonstrated differences between the strategy profiles with respect to the frequency of their applied strategies, as well as concerning the temporal sequences wherein strategies were applied throughout the course of students’ text-learning process. The added value of combining both retrospective and concurrent self-report measures of students’ strategies as well as conducting process mining analysis is discussed.

Childhood Adversities as Determinants of Cardiovascular Disease Risk and Perceived Illness Burden in Adulthood: Comparing Retrospective and Prospective Self-Report Measures in a Longitudinal Sample of African Americans.

A large body of evidence suggests that exposure to childhood adversities increases risk for poor quality physical health in adulthood. Much of this evidence is based on retrospective measures which are believed to be contaminated by the limitations and biases of autobiographical memory. Using longitudinal data on 454 African Americans (61 percent female) this study examines the corroboration between prospective and retrospective measures of childhood adversities gathered approximately two decades apart, and the relative ability of the measures to predict self-reported illnesses and a biomarker of 30-year cardiovascular disease risk. Comparisons indicated that the retrospective and prospective measures demonstrated weak convergence and did not provide completely equivalent information about self-reported adverse childhood experiences. A series of regression models indicated that the two measures of adversities exhibited similar associations with the cardiovascular disease biomarker but divergent associations with self-reported illnesses. Furthermore, both the prospective and retrospective measures simultaneously predicted cardiovascular disease risk in adulthood. That the prospective measure did not significantly predict perceived illnesses after adjusting for the retrospective measure is evidence that childhood adversities predict self-reported health burden insofar as respondents remember those adversities as adults. The findings provide evidence that retrospective self-report measures of childhood adversities do not closely converge with prospective measures, and that retrospective measures may not provide valid estimates of the association between childhood adversities and perceived illnesses in adulthood.

Teenage sleep and technology engagement across the week.

BackgroundThroughout the developed world, adolescents are growing up with increased access to and engagement with a range of screen-based technologies, allowing them to encounter ideas and people on a global scale from the intimacy of their bedroom. The concerns about digital technologies negatively influencing sleep are therefore especially noteworthy, as sleep has been proven to greatly affect both cognitive and emotional well-being. The associations between digital engagement and adolescent sleep should therefore be carefully investigated in research adhering to the highest methodological standards. This understood, studies published to date have not often done so and have instead focused mainly on data derived from general retrospective self-report questionnaires. The value of this work has been called into question by recent research showing that retrospective questionnaires might fail to accurately measure these variables of interest. Novel and diverse approaches to measurement are therefore necessary for academic study to progress.MethodsThis study analyses data from 11,884 adolescents included in the UK Millennium Cohort Study to examine the association between digital engagement and adolescent sleep, comparing the relative effects of retrospective self-report vs. time-use diary measures of technology use. By doing so, it provides an empirical lens to understand the effects of digital engagement both throughout the day and before bedtime and adds nuance to a research area primarily relying on retrospective self-report.ResultsThe study finds that there is a small negative association relating digital engagement to adolescent sleep both on weekdays and weekend days (median standardized association βweekday = −0.06 and βweekend = −0.03). There is a more negative association between digital engagement and total sleep time on weekdays compared to weekend days (median standardized βweekday = −0.08, median standardized βweekend = −0.02), while there is no such difference when examining adolescents’ bedtime. Surprisingly, and contrary to our expectations, digital technology use before bedtime is not substantively associated with the amount of sleep and the tardiness of bedtime in adolescents.ConclusionsResults derived from the use of transparent Specification Curve Analysis methods show that the negative associations in evidence are mainly driven by retrospective technology use measures and measures of total time spent on digital devices during the day. The effects are overall very small: for example, an additional hour of digital screen time per day was only related to a 9 min decrease in total time spent sleeping on weekdays and a 3 min decrease on weekends. Using digital screens 30 min before bed led to a 1 min decrease in total time spent sleeping on weekdays and weekends. The study shows that more work should be done examining how to measure digital screen time before interventions are designed.

An integrated framework for using mobile sensing to understand response to mobile interventions among breast cancer patients

Abstract Despite the proliferation of mobile interventions that are delivered through smartphones, and their potential impact on promoting mental health in chronic health populations, little research has examined how to leverage the advanced technological capabilities of smartphones to also monitor response to app-based interventions. Current methods used to evaluate response to digital interventions rely on static and retrospective self-report measures to infer crucial behavioral and affective patterns, which provide little contextual information and limits generalizability. Importantly, this approach can also increase burden among chronic health populations that are already experiencing a heavy treatment load. Using data collected from 7 recently diagnosed breast cancer patients undergoing active cancer treatment (average time from initial diagnosis to study enrollment is 13 days), we propose a framework for integrating self-report surveys and fine-grained mobile sensing data. Preliminary results demonstrate the feasibility and utility of this framework to reduce burden and improve detection of mood in response to an app-based intervention among chronic health populations.

Do documented records and retrospective reports of childhood maltreatment similarly predict chronic inflammation?

Childhood adversities have been associated with chronic inflammation and risk for cardiovascular disease. With some exceptions, existing knowledge of this relationship is based on retrospective self-reports, potentially subject to recall bias or memory problems. We seek to determine whether childhood maltreatment is associated with higher C-reactive protein (CRP) later in life and whether individuals with official and retrospective self-reports of maltreatment and men and women show similar increases in risk. Data are from in-person interviews in 2009-2010 with 443 offspring (mean age = 23.4) of parents in a longitudinal study of the consequences of childhood maltreatment. Official reports of maltreatment were abstracted from 2011-2013 Child Protective Services records. Eleven measures were used to assess self-reported maltreatment retrospectively. Seventeen percent of offspring had official reports, whereas self-reported prevalence rates ranged from 5.4% to 64.8%. CRP was assessed through blood spot samples. Regression models were used to estimate the effect of maltreatment on inflammation, adjusting for age, sex, race, parent occupational status, current depression, smoking, and heavy drinking. Individuals with official reports of child maltreatment and, specifically, physical abuse, had significantly higher levels of CRP than non-maltreated individuals. Maltreated females showed elevated CRP, independent of control variables, whereas no significant association was observed in males. Retrospective self-report measures of child maltreatment did not predict elevated CRP. Individuals with documented histories of childhood maltreatment are at increased risk for chronic inflammation and may benefit from targeted interventions. The results strengthen inferences about the effects of childhood maltreatment on inflammation in females.

From Urges to Action: Negative Urgency and Nonsuicidal Self-Injury in an Acute Transdiagnostic Sample

Urgency–rash action during strong emotion–is a robust correlate of nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI). This study tested whether urgency is associated with time between NSSI urges and NSSI, and sought to replicate the finding that urgency is associated with NSSI history. Participants attending a partial hospitalization program (N = 669) completed self-report measures of urgency, NSSI history and latency, and psychiatric symptoms. Consistent with previous research in clinical samples, rates of lifetime engagement in NSSI were high. Using logistic regression to predict short vs. long latency between urges and NSSI, no significant relationship emerged between negative urgency and latency to self-injure. Negative urgency more than doubled the likelihood of NSSI history (p < .001, OR = 2.39). In addition, exploratory analyses revealed several links between NSSI latency and negative urgency. Results confirm that urgency is robustly related to NSSI, yet also suggest that more research is needed to understand how urgency relates to the parameters of NSSI within those who self-injure. Use of retrospective self-report measures may limit the ability to test links between urgency and latency of NSSI.

A comparison between two retrospective alcohol consumption measures and the daily drinking diary method with university students

ABSTRACTBackground: There are two main categories of retrospective self-report alcohol consumption measures: summary and daily drinking. Time-efficient summary measures have been criticized for being less able to capture sporadic and unpatterned drinking. A novel retrospective summary measure, the Typical and Atypical Drinking Diary (TADD), may produce more precise estimates of alcohol consumption than the gold-standard daily measure, the Timeline Followback (TLFB). Objective: To establish how accurately the TADD and TLFB retrospectively capture alcohol consumption compared to the Daily Drinking Diary (DDD) method. Method: Forty-three university undergraduates (77% female) concurrently recorded their daily alcohol consumption for 28 consecutive days using daily drinking diaries. Participants then retrospectively estimated their alcohol consumption using both the TADD and TLFB 28 days following completion of the 28-day daily consumption period. Results: When compared against the drinking data obtained from the DDD method, the TADD consistently produced accurate retrospective estimates of total alcohol consumption, number of drinking days, and number of heavy drinking episodes. Contrariwise, the TLFB significantly underestimated all aspects of drinking. Underreporting on the TLFB was hypothesized to be associated with social desirability bias. Conclusion: The TADD is a valid and reliable instrument for retrospectively measuring alcohol consumption and drinking variability in the university student population.

Using Continuous Response and Self‐Report Measures to Understand Spokesperson Evaluation Processes During Water Crises

AbstractThis study investigated how perceptions of news conference sources varied from measures taken in real‐time to those taken retrospectively after exposure to news conference footage. A 4 (source type) X 4 (message replication) mixed design experiment was conducted in which participants viewed four organizational spokespersons responding to water crises involving organizations. Participants evaluated spokespersons using a handheld dial during stimulus exposure, and then, retrospectively, using self‐report measures. Evaluation of source trustworthiness tended to increase over time, regardless of the type of source. However, retrospective self‐report measures demonstrated that public relations practitioner credibility suffered in comparison to that of other sources. Implications are discussed for public relations practice and future research in source credibility.
