Quantitative structure-retention relationships for pyridinium-based ionic liquids used as gas chromatographic stationary phases: convenient software and assessment of reliability of the results

Ionic liquids, i.e., organic salts with a low melting point, can be used as gas chromatographic liquid stationary phases. These stationary phases have some advantages such as peculiar selectivity, high polarity, and thermostability. Many previous works are devoted to such stationary phases. However, there are still no large enough retention data sets of structurally diverse compounds for them. Consequently, there are very few works devoted to quantitative structure-retention relationships (QSRR) for ionic liquid-based stationary phases. This work is aimed at closing this gap. Three ionic liquids with substituted pyridinium cations are considered. We provide large enough data sets (123–158 compounds) that can be used in further works devoted to QSRR and related methods. We provide a QSRR study using this data set and demonstrate the following. The retention index for a polyethylene glycol stationary phase (denoted as RI_PEG), predicted using another model, can be used as a molecular descriptor. This descriptor significantly improves the accuracy of the QSRR model. Both deep learning-based and linear models were considered for RI_PEG prediction. The ability to predict the retention indices for ionic liquid-based stationary phases with high accuracy is demonstrated. Particular attention is paid to the reproducibility and reliability of the QSRR study. It was demonstrated that adding/removing several compounds, small perturbations of the data set can considerably affect the results such as descriptor importance and model accuracy. These facts have to be considered in order to avoid misleading conclusions. For the QSRR research, we developed a software tool with a graphical user interface, which we called CHERESHNYA. It is intended to select molecular descriptors and construct linear equations connecting molecular descriptors with gas chromatographic retention indices for any stationary phase. The software allows the user to generate several hundred molecular descriptors (one-dimensional and two-dimensional). Among them, predicted retention indices for popular stationary phases such as polydimethylsiloxane and polyethylene glycol are used as molecular descriptors. Various methods for selecting (and assessing the importance of) molecular descriptors have been implemented, in particular the Boruta algorithm, partial least squares, genetic algorithms, L1-regularized regression (LASSO) and others. Validation of the identification reliability of known and assumed UDMH transformation products using gas chromatographic retention indices and machine learning

Thirty two commercially available standards were used to determine chromatographic retention indices for three different stationary phases (non-polar, polar and mid-polar) commonly used in gas chromatography. The selected compounds were nitrogen-containing heterocycles and amides, which are referred to in the literature as unsymmetrical dimethylhydrazine (UDMH) transformation products or its assumed transformation products. UDMH is a highly toxic compound widely used in the space industry. It is a reactive substance that forms a large number of different compounds in the environment. Well-known transformation products may exceed UDMH itself in their toxicity, but most of the products are poorly investigated, while posing a huge environmental threat. Experimental retention indices for the three stationary phases, retention indices from the NIST database, and predicted retention indices are presented in this paper. It is shown that there are virtually no retention indices for UDMH transformation products in the NIST database. In addition, even among those compounds for which retention indices were known, inconsistencies were identified. Adding retention indices to the database and eliminating erroneous data would allow for more reliable identification when standards are not available. The discrepancies identified between experimental retention index values and predicted values will allow for adjustments to the machine learning models that are used for prediction. Previously proposed compounds as possible transformation products without the use of standards and NMR method were confirmed.

GCMS-ID: a webserver for identifying compounds from gas chromatography mass spectrometry experiments.

GCMS-ID (Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry compound IDentifier) is a webserver designed to enable the identification of compounds from GC-MS experiments. GC-MS instruments produce both electron impact mass spectra (EI-MS) and retention index (RI) data for as few as one, to as many as hundreds of different compounds. Matching the measured EI-MS, RI or EI-MS+RI data to experimentally collected EI-MS and/or RI reference libraries allows facile compound identification. However, the number of available experimental RI and EI-MS reference spectra, especially for metabolomics or exposomics-related studies, is disappointingly small. Using machine learning to accurately predict the EI-MS spectra and/or RIs for millions of metabolomics and/or exposomics-relevant compounds could (partially) solve this spectral matching problem. This computational approach to compound identification is called in silico metabolomics. GCMS-ID brings this concept of in silico metabolomics closer to reality by intelligently integrating two of our previously published webservers: CFM-EI and RIpred. CFM-EI is an EI-MS spectral prediction webserver, and RIpred is a Kovats RI prediction webserver. We have found that GCMS-ID can accurately identify compounds from experimental RI, EI-MS or RI+EI-MS data through matching to its own large library of>1 million predicted RI/EI-MS values generated for metabolomics/exposomics-relevant compounds. GCMS-ID can also predict the RI or EI-MS spectrum from a user-submitted structure or annotate a user-submitted EI-MS spectrum. GCMS-ID is freely available at https://gcms-id.ca/.

AIRI: Predicting Retention Indices and Their Uncertainties Using Artificial Intelligence.

The Kováts retention index (RI) is a quantity measured using gas chromatography and is commonly used in the identification of chemical structures. Creating libraries of observed RI values is a laborious task, so we explore the use of a deep neural network for predicting RI values from structure for standard semipolar columns. This network generated predictions with a mean absolute error of 15.1 and, in a quantification of the tail of the error distribution, a 95th percentile absolute error of 46.5. Because of the Artificial Intelligence Retention Indices (AIRI) network's accuracy, it was used to predict RI values for the NIST EI-MS spectral libraries. These RI values are used to improve chemical identification methods and the quality of the library. Estimating uncertainty is an important practical need when using prediction models. To quantify the uncertainty of our network for each individual prediction, we used the outputs of an ensemble of 8 networks to calculate a predicted standard deviation for each RI value prediction. This predicted standard deviation was corrected to follow the error between the observed and predicted RI values. The Z scores using these predicted standard deviations had a standard deviation of 1.52 and a 95th percentile absolute Z score corresponding to a mean RI value of 42.6.

Quantitative structure-property relationship modelling for predicting retention indices of essential oils based on an improved horse herd optimization algorithm

ABSTRACT The horse herd optimization algorithm (HOA), one of the more contemporary metaheuristic algorithms, has demonstrated superior performance in a number of challenging optimization tasks. In the present work, the descriptor selection issue is resolved by classifying different essential oil retention indices using the binary form, BHOA. Based on internal and external prediction criteria, Z-shape transfer functions (ZTF) were tested to verify their efficiency in improving BHOA performance in QSPR modelling for predicting retention indices of essential oils. The evaluation criteria involved the mean-squared error of the training and testing datasets (MSE), and leave-one-out internal and external validation (Q 2). The degree of convergence of the proposed Z-shaped transfer functions was compared. In addition, K-fold cross validation with k = 5 was applied. The results show that ZTF, especially ZTF1, greatly improves the performance of the original BHOA. Comparatively speaking, ZTF, especially ZTF1, exhibits the fastest convergence behaviour of the binary algorithms. It chooses the fewest descriptors and requires the fewest iterations to achieve excellent prediction performance.

ANFIS-Based QSRR Modelling for Kovats Retention Index Prediction in Gas Chromatography

This study aims to evaluate the implementation and effectiveness of the Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) based Quantitative Structure Retention Relationship (QSRR) to predict the Kovats retention index of compounds in gas chromatography. The model was trained using 340 essential oil compounds and their molecular descriptors. The evaluation of the ANFIS models revealed promising results, achieving an R2 of 0.974, an RMSE of 48.12, and an MAPE of 3.3% on the testing set. These findings highlight the ANFIS approach as remarkably accurate in its predictive capacity for determining the Kovats retention index in the context of gas chromatography. This study provides valuable perspectives on the efficiency of retention index prediction through ANFIS-based QSRR methods and the potential practicality in compound analysis and chromatographic optimization.

Facilitating structural elucidation of small environmental solutes in RPLC-HRMS by retention index prediction

Implementing effective environmental management strategies requires a comprehensive understanding of the chemical composition of environmental pollutants, particularly in complex mixtures. Utilizing innovative analytical techniques, such as high-resolution mass spectrometry and predictive retention index models, can provide valuable insights into the molecular structures of environmental contaminants. Liquid Chromatography-High-Resolution Mass Spectrometry is a powerful tool for the identification of isomeric structures in complex samples. However, there are some limitations that can prevent accurate isomeric structure identification, particularly in cases where the isomers have similar mass and fragmentation patterns. Liquid chromatographic retention, determined by the size, shape, and polarity of the analyte and its interactions with the stationary phase, contains valuable 3D structural information that is vastly underutilized. Therefore, a predictive retention index model is developed which is transferrable to LC-HRMS systems and can assist in the structural elucidation of unknowns. The approach is currently restricted to carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen-based molecules <500 g mol−1. The methodology facilitates the acceptance of accurate structural formulas and the exclusion of erroneous hypothetical structural representations by leveraging retention time estimations, thereby providing a permissible tolerance range for a given elemental composition and experimental retention time. This approach serves as a proof of concept for the development of a Quantitative Structure-Retention Relationship model using a generic gradient LC approach. The use of a widely used reversed-phase (U)HPLC column and a relatively large set of training (101) and test compounds (14) demonstrates the feasibility and potential applicability of this approach for predicting the retention behaviour of compounds in complex mixtures. By providing a standard operating procedure, this approach can be easily replicated and applied to various analytical challenges, further supporting its potential for broader implementation.

Intelligent Workflow and Software for Non-Target Analysis of Complex Samples Using a Mixture of Toxic Transformation Products of Unsymmetrical Dimethylhydrazine as an Example.

Unsymmetrical dimethylhydrazine (UDMH) is a widely used rocket propellant. Entering the environment or being stored in uncontrolled conditions, UDMH easily forms an enormous variety (at least many dozens) of transformation products. Environmental pollution by UDMH and its transformation products is a major problem in many countries and across the Arctic region. Unfortunately, previous works often use only electron ionization mass spectrometry with a library search, or they consider only the molecular formula to propose the structures of new products. This is quite an unreliable approach. It was demonstrated that a newly proposed artificial intelligence-based workflow allows for the proposal of structures of UDMH transformation products with a greater degree of certainty. The presented free and open-source software with a convenient graphical user interface facilitates the non-target analysis of industrial samples. It has bundled machine learning models for the prediction of retention indices and mass spectra. A critical analysis of whether a combination of several methods of chromatography and mass spectrometry allows us to elucidate the structure of an unknown UDMH transformation product was provided. It was demonstrated that the use of gas chromatographic retention indices for two stationary phases (polar and non-polar) allows for the rejection of false candidates in many cases when only one retention index is not enough. The structures of five previously unknown UDMH transformation products were proposed, and four previously proposed structures were refined.

Prediction of Retention Indices and Response Factors of Oxygenates for GC-FID by Multilinear Regression

The replacement of fossil carbon sources with green bio-oils promotes the importance of several hundred oxygenated hydrocarbons, which substantially increases the analytical effort in catalysis research. A multilinear regression is performed to correlate retention indices (RIs) and response factors (RFs) with structural properties. The model includes a variety of possible products formed during the hydrodeoxygenation of bio-oils with good accuracy (RRF2 0.921 and RRI2 0.975). The GC parameters are related to the detailed hydrocarbon analysis (DHA) method, which is commonly used for non-oxygenated hydrocarbons. The RIs are determined from a paraffin standard (C5–C15), and the RFs are calculated with ethanol and 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene as internal standards. The method presented here can, therefore, be used together with the DHA method and be expanded further. In addition to the multilinear regression, an increment system has been developed for aromatic oxygenates, which further improves the prediction accuracy of the response factors with respect to the molecular constitution (R2 0.958). Both predictive models are designed exclusively on structural factors to ensure effortless application. All experimental RIs and RFs are determined under identical conditions. Moreover, a folded Plackett–Burman screening design demonstrates the general applicability of the datasets independent of method- or device-specific parameters.

Machine learning-assisted non-target analysis of a highly complex mixture of possible toxic unsymmetrical dimethylhydrazine transformation products with chromatography-mass spectrometry

Unsymmetrical dimethylhydrazine (UDMH) is a toxic and environmentally hostile compound that was massively introduced to the environment during previous decades due to its use in the space and rocket industry. The compound forms multiple transformation products, and many of them are as dangerous as UDMH or even more dangerous. The danger includes, but is not limited to, acute toxicity, chronic health hazards, carcinogenicity, and environmental damage. UDMH transformation products are poorly investigated. In this work, the mixture formed by long storage of the waste that contained UDMH was studied. Even a preliminary screening of such a mixture is a complex task. It consists of dozens of compounds, and most of them are missing in chemical and spectral databases. The complete preparative separation of such a mixture is very laborious. We applied several methods of gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry, and several machine learning and chemoinformatics methods to make a preliminary but informative screening of the mixture. Machine learning allowed predicting retention indices and mass spectra of candidate structures. The combination of various ion sources and a comparison of the observed with the predicted spectra and retention was used to propose confident structures for 24 compounds. It was demonstrated that neither high-resolution mass spectrometry nor mass spectral library matching is enough to elucidate the structures of unknown UDMH transformation products. At the same time, the use of machine learning and a combination of methods significantly improves the identification power. Finally, machine learning was applied to estimate the acute toxicity of the discovered compounds. It was shown that many of them are comparable to or even more toxic than UDMH itself. Such an extremely wide and still underestimated variety of easily formed derivatives of UDMH can lead to a significant underestimation of the potential hazard of this compound.

Biological activity and profiling of Salvia sclarea essential oil obtained by steam and hydrodistillation extraction methods via chemometrics tools

AbstractSalvia sclarea L. or clary sage is cultivated worldwide in temperate and sub‐tropical climates, as an ornamental and essential oil (EO) bearing plant. EO is obtained from fresh spikes in full flowering stage and is recognized as an important commercial product for food, beverage and cosmetic industries. This study investigated the EO composition of S. sclarea grown in Serbia (Southeast Europe) obtained by two different methods, steam (SD) and hydrodistillation (HD). GC‐MS analysis identified oxygenated monoterpenes as the main class of compounds for all EOs (between 81.8% and 88.2% depending on the distillation process). The most abundant oxygenated monoterpenes were linalyl acetate and linalool. In addition, in vitro antimicrobial (modified resazurin microtitre‐plate assay) and antioxidant activities (DPPH· assay) and total polyphenol content of obtained EOs were also evaluated. According to the assay used for the evaluation of the antibacterial activity, Gram‐negative bacteria were more sensitive to S. sclarea EO in comparison to Gram‐positive bacteria. EOs exhibited low antioxidant capacity, below 3% neutralized DPPH· radicals, reaching up to approximately 400 µg AAE mL‐1. This study also investigated a possibility for predicting retention indices (RIs) of compounds isolated from EOs. In total, 78 experimentally obtained RIs were applied to construct the prediction model. The quantitative structure‐chromatographic retention relationship (QSRR) model was used to anticipate the experimentally obtained RIs. Five molecular descriptors were selected by factor analysis and genetic algorithm to predict RIs. The obtained accuracy of the QSRR model reached r2 = .912, which showed that these models might be applied for predicting retention indices.

HMDB 5.0: the Human Metabolome Database for 2022.

The Human Metabolome Database or HMDB (https://hmdb.ca) has been providing comprehensive reference information about human metabolites and their associated biological, physiological and chemical properties since 2007. Over the past 15 years, the HMDB has grown and evolved significantly to meet the needs of the metabolomics community and respond to continuing changes in internet and computing technology. This year's update, HMDB 5.0, brings a number of important improvements and upgrades to the database. These should make the HMDB more useful and more appealing to a larger cross-section of users. In particular, these improvements include: (i) a significant increase in the number of metabolite entries (from 114 100 to 217 920 compounds); (ii) enhancements to the quality and depth of metabolite descriptions; (iii) the addition of new structure, spectral and pathway visualization tools; (iv) the inclusion of many new and much more accurately predicted spectral data sets, including predicted NMR spectra, more accurately predicted MS spectra, predicted retention indices and predicted collision cross section data and (v) enhancements to the HMDB’s search functions to facilitate better compound identification. Many other minor improvements and updates to the content, the interface, and general performance of the HMDB website have also been made. Overall, we believe these upgrades and updates should greatly enhance the HMDB’s ease of use and its potential applications not only in human metabolomics but also in exposomics, lipidomics, nutritional science, biochemistry and clinical chemistry.

Deep Learning Based Prediction of Gas Chromatographic Retention Indices for a Wide Variety of Polar and Mid-Polar Liquid Stationary Phases.

Prediction of gas chromatographic retention indices based on compound structure is an important task for analytical chemistry. The predicted retention indices can be used as a reference in a mass spectrometry library search despite the fact that their accuracy is worse in comparison with the experimental reference ones. In the last few years, deep learning was applied for this task. The use of deep learning drastically improved the accuracy of retention index prediction for non-polar stationary phases. In this work, we demonstrate for the first time the use of deep learning for retention index prediction on polar (e.g., polyethylene glycol, DB-WAX) and mid-polar (e.g., DB-624, DB-210, DB-1701, OV-17) stationary phases. The achieved accuracy lies in the range of 16–50 in terms of the mean absolute error for several stationary phases and test data sets. We also demonstrate that our approach can be directly applied to the prediction of the second dimension retention times (GC × GC) if a large enough data set is available. The achieved accuracy is considerably better compared with the previous results obtained using linear quantitative structure-retention relationships and ACD ChromGenius software. Weather Conditions Influence on Hyssop Essential Oil Quality

This paper is a study of the chemical composition of Hyssopus officinalis ssp. officinalis grown during three years (2017–2019) at the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops Novi Sad (Vojvodina Province, Serbia). Furthermore, comparisons with ISO standards during the years were also investigated, as well as a prediction model of retention indices of compounds from the essential oils. An essential oil obtained by hydrodistillation and analysed by GC-FID and GC-MS was isopinocamphone chemotype. The gathered information about the volatile compounds from H. officinalis was used to classify the samples using the unrooted cluster tree. The correlation analysis was applied to investigate the similarity of different samples, according to GC-MS data. The quantitative structure–retention relationship (QSRR) was also employed to predict the retention indices of the identified compounds. A total of 74 experimentally obtained retention indices were used to build a prediction model. The coefficient of determination for the training cycle was 0.910, indicating that this model could be used for the prediction of retention indices for H. officinalis essential oil compounds.

Predicting Kováts Retention Indices Using Graph Neural Networks

The Kováts retention index is a dimensionless quantity that characterizes the rate at which a compound is processed through a gas chromatography column. This quantity is independent of many experimental variables and, as such, is considered a near-universal descriptor of retention time on a chromatography column. The Kováts retention indices of a large number of molecules have been determined experimentally. The “NIST 20: GC Method/Retention Index Library” database has collected and, more importantly, curated retention indices of a subset of these compounds resulting in a highly valued reference database. The experimental data in the library form an ideal data set for training machine learning models for the prediction of retention indices of unknown compounds. In this article, we describe the training of a graph neural network model to predict the Kováts retention index for compounds in the NIST library and compare this approach with previous work [1]. We predict the Kováts retention index with a mean unsigned error of 28 index units as compared to 44, the putative best result using a convolutional neural network [1]. The NIST library also incorporates an estimation scheme based on a group contribution approach that achieves a mean unsigned error of 114 compared to the experimental data. Our method uses the same input data source as the group contribution approach, making its application straightforward and convenient to apply to existing libraries. Our results convincingly demonstrate the predictive powers of systematic, data-driven approaches leveraging deep learning methodologies applied to chemical data and for the data in the NIST 20 library outperform previous models.

Chemical Characterization of Marrubium vulgare Volatiles from Serbia.

Marrubium vulgare is a cosmopolitan medicinal plant from the Lamiaceae family, which produces structurally highly diverse groups of secondary metabolites. A total of 160 compounds were determined in the volatiles from Serbia during two investigated years (2019 and 2020). The main components were E-caryophyllene, followed by germacrene D, α-humulene and α-copaene. All these compounds are from sesquiterpene hydrocarbons class which was dominant in both investigated years. This variation in volatiles composition could be a consequence of weather conditions, as in the case of other aromatic plants. According to the unrooted cluster tree with 37 samples of Marrubium sp. volatiles from literature and average values from this study, it could be said that there are several chemotypes: E-caryophyllene, β-bisabolene, α-pinene, β-farnesene, E-caryophyllene + caryophyllene oxide chemotype, and diverse (unclassified) chemotypes. However, occurring polymorphism could be consequence of adaptation to grow in different environment, especially ecological conditions such as humidity, temperature and altitude, as well as hybridization strongly affected the chemotypes. In addition, this paper aimed to obtain validated models for prediction of retention indices (RIs) of compounds isolated from M. vulgare volatiles. A total of 160 experimentally obtained RIs of volatile compounds was used to build the prediction models. The coefficients of determination were 0.956 and 0.964, demonstrating that these models could be used for predicting RIs, due to low prediction error and high r2.

Achillea clypeolata Sibth. &amp; Sm. essential oil composition and QSRR model for predicting retention indices

The aim of this study was the prediction model of retention indices of compounds from the aboveground parts of Achillea clypeolata Sibth. &amp; Sm. essential oil, obtained by hydrodistillation and analysed by GC?MS. The quantitative structure?retention relationship analysis was applied in order to anticipate the retention time of the obtained compounds. The selection of the seven molecular descriptors was done by a genetic algorithm. The chosen descriptors were uncorrelated and were used to construct an artificial neural network. A total of 40 experimentally obtained retention indices was used to build this prediction model. The coefficient of determination for the training, testing and validation cycles were: 0.950, 0.825 and 1.000, respectively, indicating that this model could be used for prediction of retention indices for A. clypeolata, essential oil compounds.

DeepReI: Deep learning-based gas chromatographic retention index predictor

Retention index in gas chromatographic analyses is an essential tool for appropriate analyte identification. Currently, many libraries providing retention indices for a huge number of compounds on distinct stationary phase chemistries are available. However, situation could be complicated in the case of unknown unknowns not present in such libraries. The importance of identification of these compounds have risen together with a rapidly expanding interest in non-targeted analyses in the last decade. Therefore, precise in silico computation/prediction of retention indices based on a suggested molecular structure will be highly appreciated in such situations. On this basis, a predictive model based on deep learning was developed and presented in this paper. It is designed for user-friendly and accurate prediction of retention indices of compounds in gas chromatography with the semi-standard non-polar stationary phase. Simplified Molecular Input Entry System (SMILES) is used as the model’s input. Architecture of the model consists of 2D-convolutional layers, together with batch normalization, max pooling, dropout, and three residual connections. The model reaches median absolute error of prediction of the retention index for validation and test set at 16.4 and 16.0 units, respectively. Median percentage error is lower than or equal to 0.81% in the case of all mentioned data sets. Finally, the DeepReI model is presented in R package, and is available on https://github.com/TomasVrzal/DeepReI together with a user-friendly graphical user interface.

QSRR Model for predicting retention indices of Satureja kitaibelii Wierzb. ex Heuff. essential oil composition

A prediction model of retention indices of compounds from the aboveground parts of Satureja kitaibelii essential oil, obtained by hydrodistillation and analysed by Gas Chromatography coupled with Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS), was the aim of this study. The quantitative structure–retention relationship was employed to predict the retention time using five molecular descriptors selected by a genetic algorithm. The selected descriptors were used as inputs of an artificial neural network. Total of 53 experimentally obtained retention indices (log RI) were used to build a prediction model. The selected descriptors were used as inputs of an artificial neural network model, to build a prediction time predictive quantitative structure-retention relationship model. The coefficient of determination for the training cycle was 0.962, indicating that this model could be used for prediction of retention indices for S. kitaibelii essential oil compounds.

Various aspects of retention index usage for GC-MS library search: A statistical investigation using a diverse data set

This work is devoted to the large-scale statistical evaluation of various aspects of using the retention index for GC-MS library search with a diverse data set. A search in a large library often does not give a correct compound even if a library contains it. One of the methods to improve a spectral library search procedure is to use the retention index information. The aim of this study is to explore some statistical peculiarities which can be helpful for development of automated software which uses a library search of diverse completely unknown compounds in a large database. A data set that was used in this work as a source of queries contains ~11 thousand spectra of compounds which belong to diverse chemical classes. Six equations for matching reference and experimental “retention index – spectrum” pairs were compared. It was found that good results can be obtained when a linear equation for similarity of pairs is used. Similarity of pairs is found as a sum of spectral similarity and of a product of a negative adjustable weight parameter and the absolute difference between reference and query retention indices. This equation performs equal or better than much more complex equations which contain two instead of one adjustable parameters. Widely used threshold-based approach, when candidates with high retention index deviation are rejected, performs worse than other equations. The use of predicted with neural networks retention indices as reference was also considered. Modern universal retention prediction models which are applicable to a wide variety of compounds are still quite inaccurate comparing with values from databases, but these predicted values allow to improve a library search as well. When predicted retention indices are used as reference, the linear equation for matching “retention index – spectrum” pairs also performs equal or better than other equations. The distribution of differences between query indices and reference indices (both calculated and experimental) was found close to exponential distribution near zero. The dependence of a fraction of correct identifications on the reference retention indices accuracy was studied. The addition of random noise with double exponential distribution to exact values was used to create “reference” retention indices with the predefined accuracy. The use of the molecular mass and molecular formula as additional constraints during a library search was also considered.
