A Comprehensive Evaluation Method for Environmental Pollution in Tourist Attractions Based on Improved Principle Component Analysis

In order to address the problem of the reliability of current environmental pollution assessment methods, a comprehensive assessment method of environmental pollution in tourist scenic spots based on improved principle component analysis was proposed. First air, water, and soil pollution for data tourist attractions in the top 5 metropolitan cities of India are collected. Then, the original pollution data is cleaned, the data clustering method is used to classify the pollution data, and the comprehensive evaluation index system of environmental pollution in tourist attractions is established. Finally, the comprehensive evaluation method is implemented to calculate the evaluation values of various indicators, and the comprehensive assessment results of pollution at tourist attractions are obtained. The experimental results show that the correlation of the evaluation index is always controlled above 0.90, the convergence rate of the method is fast, the optimal solution can be approached within 150 iterations, and the application effect is good.

Intelligence Assessment of Children & Youth Benefiting from Psychological-Educational Support System in Poland

This article presents a unique dataset comprising 419,135 intelligence assessment results. The study utilised the Polish adaptation of the Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scale 5 during individual diagnostic sessions conducted under natural conditions. The research included children aged 3;0–18;11 of both genders who had been referred to support institutions (psychological-educational counselling centres, post-hospital clinics, hospital departments) by preschools or schools, or voluntarily requested by parents with their consent. The data collection spanned the entire country of Poland from 2018 to 2023. In addition to comprehensive intelligence assessment results, the dataset contains valuable demographic information, enabling in-depth analyses. The dataset’s uniqueness lies in its impressive sample size, encompassing over four hundred thousand observations as well as the utilisation of time-consuming and thorough intelligence assessment procedures in settings that mimic the real world. Moreover, the context of the study is noteworthy, as the participants are individuals benefiting from the publicly - available Polish psychological support system.

Immersive artificial intelligence technology based on entertainment game experience in simulation of psychological health testing for university students

At present, the mental health problems of college students are becoming more and more prominent, but the existing mental health detection methods have certain limitations. Therefore, the combination of entertainment and game experience with artificial intelligence technology in this paper can provide a more comprehensive and accurate mental health detection scheme. The research designed an immersive entertainment game experience platform, in which artificial intelligence technology was used to detect mental health. The platform is based on emotion recognition algorithms and artificial intelligence interaction technology to assess the level of mental health of users by analyzing their behavior and emotional expression in the game. The results show that immersive artificial intelligence technology based on entertainment and game experience can effectively simulate the mental health state of college students. Compared with traditional mental health assessment methods, this technique has obvious advantages in terms of accuracy and comprehensiveness. Users also showed a high degree of acceptance and participation for this entertaining mental health detection method. This technology can provide students with a more relaxed and interesting mental health assessment experience, and can also provide accurate and comprehensive assessment results, and provide scientific and effective guidance for mental health management and intervention of college students.

Effects of polyethylene and biodegradable microplastics on the physiology and metabolic profiles of dandelion

Biodegradable plastics, such as poly(butylene adipate terephthalate) (PBAT) and polylactic acid (PLA), are potential alternatives to conventional polyethylene (PE), both of which are associated with the production of microplastics (MPs). However, the toxicity of these compounds on medicinal plants and their differential effects on plant morphophysiology remain unclear. This study supplemented soils with MPs sized at 200 μm at a rate of 1% w/w and incubated them for 50 days to investigate the impact of MPs on the growth and metabolites of dandelion (Taraxacum mongolicum Hand.-Mazz.). The results demonstrated that the investigated MPs decreased the growth of dandelion seedlings, induced oxidative stress, and altered the activity of antioxidant enzymes (superoxide dismutase, peroxidase, and catalase). Based on the comprehensive toxicity assessment results, the ecological toxicity was in the following order: PE MPs > PBAT MPs > PLA MPs. Metabolomics analyses revealed metabolic reprogramming in dandelion plants, leading to the enrichment of numerous differentially accumulated metabolites (DAMs) in the leaves. These pathways include carbohydrate metabolism, energy metabolism, and biosynthesis of secondary metabolites, suggesting that dandelions respond to MP stress by enhancing the activity of sugar, organic acid, and amino acid metabolic pathways. In addition, phenolic acids and flavonoids are critical for maintaining the balance in the antioxidant defense system. Our results provide substantial insights into the toxicity of biodegradable MPs to plants and shed light on plant defense and adaptation strategies. Further assessment of the safety of biodegradable MPs in terrestrial ecosystems is essential to provide guidance for environmentally friendly management.

Comprehensive Assessment and Empirical Research on Green and Low-Carbon Technologies in the Steel Industry

The iron and steel industry is the leading industry supporting China’s industrial sector. Currently, there is less assessment work on green and low-carbon technologies for the iron and steel industry. This study clarifies the overall strategy of technology assessment by researching the relevant theories and methods of technology assessment. The study further establishes a scientific and reasonable comprehensive assessment index system of green and low-carbon technologies for the iron and steel industry from the aspects of technology index, economy and promotion, and application, including factors such as 11 indexes, the amount of energy saving, carbon dioxide emission reduction, and the resource recovery rate by utilising analytical and comprehensive methods and combining with the characteristics of the technologies. By analysing and comparing the advantages and disadvantages of the commonly used assessment methods, the entropy weighting method, grey correlation analysis method, and TOPSIS (technique for order preference by similarity to an ideal solution) method are combined and optimised to construct a comprehensive assessment model. The Latin hypercube sampling method is also introduced to analyse the technical parameters in combination with the evaluation model. Finally, fourteen iron and steel green and low-carbon technologies were selected for case assessment and uncertainty analysis of technical parameters, and it was found that the comprehensive assessment result of gas combined cycle power generation technology was optimal. After determining the weights of each assessment indicator through the entropy weighting method, it is concluded that the technical performance indicator > economic indicator > promotional indicator. A comparative analysis of the results under the three preference decisions concludes that technical performance is the main obstacle to improving the comprehensive assessment score of the technology, followed by the economics of the technology. Finally, the uncertainty analysis of the technical parameters shows that the fluctuation of the technical parameters not only affects the performance of the technology, but also affects the weights of the indicators and the comprehensive evaluation results of the technology.

Preparation and Performance of Bitumen Modified by Melt-Blown Fabric of Waste Mask Based on Grey Relational and Radar Chart Analysis.

To effectively utilize waste mask materials in road engineering and minimize resource waste, the melt-blown fabric (MBF) of waste masks was utilized to modify the virgin bitumen. The preparation process of MBF-modified bitumen was investigated, and the physical and rheological properties of bitumen were measured. Subsequently, the blending mechanism during preparation and the dispersion morphology of the modifier were explored. Finally, the pavement performance of the mixture was investigated, and a radar chart analysis was performed to quantitatively assess the effects of MBF modification. Results suggested that the recommended preparation process of shear time, shear rate, and shear temperature was 170 °C, 4000 r/min, and 15 min, respectively. MBF enhanced the high-temperature stability of the binder and weakened the temperature susceptibility. The modification was primarily a physical process. No network structure and agglomeration formed in the bitumen after modification. The addition of MBF significantly improved the resistance of the asphalt mixture to a high-temperature deformation and water damage but harmed its low-temperature crack resistance. The comprehensive assessment results of 0% (f1), 1% (f2), 3% (f3), and 5% (f4) MBF to improve the properties of the mixture were in the following order: f3>f4>f2>f1, where the impact of 3% MBF was the most significant, followed by 5% and 1% MBF.

Risk analysis for urban excavation: a FAHP-VIKOR hybrid method

The construction of urban excavation involves several potential risks, and the application of scientific methodologies is necessary for a reliable risk assessment. This paper proposes a novel risk assessment framework for urban excavation that combines the fuzzy analytic hierarchy process (FAHP) with the multi criteria compromise solution ranking (VIKOR) approach. FAHP is utilised to determine the weights of risk factors and identify high risk factors, and VIKOR is employed to evaluate the risk level of urban excavation. The proposed method comprises five key components: information source collection, risk-factor rating, weight calculation, establishment of project classification standards, and project feedback. By comprehensively considering the weights of various evaluation indicators and the superiority or inferiority of different factors, this method provides comprehensive risk assessment results. The effectiveness and feasibility of the proposed method are validated through a real case conducted in Nanning, China. The FAHP-VIKOR risk assessment method offers scientific decision support for urban excavation construction and serves as a valuable reference for risk reduction and ensuring construction safety.

Integrating electronic geriatric assessment and frailty screening for adults with acute myeloid leukemia to drive personalized treatment decisions

PurposeEvidenced based guidelines for patients with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) acknowledge increasing importance of frailty assessment when deciding on treatment, yet comprehensive geriatric assessment (GA) results are not easily incorporated into clinic workflows and the electronic health record. This study assessed the feasibility of electronic GA use in a real-world environment. MethodsPatients with AML, ≥ 60 years and at a treatment decision-making point were recruited at three academic institutions. An electronic GA (eGA) was completed by patients prior to starting treatment. Results were immediately available on a dashboard. Data on feasibility, useability and acceptability of the intervention were collected immediately after the clinical visit. Patients completed follow up surveys at 3 months and chart reviews were done to capture treatment and toxicities. Results77 patients were enrolled with a median age of 71 years (range=61–88). The eGA results were 25 fit (31.0 %), 22 (32.0 %) intermediate, and 23 (31.0 %) frail. There was 62.7 % (n = 47) provider concordance with the eGA result and 27 (36.0 %) post visit reports indicated that the eGA results influenced the treatment decision. On average, patients completed the surveys unassisted in 16.24 min and providers reviewed the dashboard in 3.5 min. ConclusionPatients easily completed an eGA prior to starting treatment. Results were reviewed by the physician and considered in the decision for optimal treatment. One third of physician reports indicated the results were used to inform the treatment decision. Feasibility of completing the eGA in the clinic without workflow disruption and utility of the results was demonstrated.

Distribution, sources, and ecological risk assessment of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in sediments from Baiyang Lake, China.

The issue of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) has been an environmental focus worldwide. In this study, the contents, sources, and ecological risks of sixteen PAHs in the sediment of Baiyang Lake were estimated, and a list of priority pollutants was established. The total PAH contents ranged from 114 to 1010 ng·g-1. The composition of PAHs indicated that 4- to 6-ring PAHs predominated in the sediment samples. The diagnostic ratio analysis showed that combustion sources were predominant for PAHs in Baiyang Lake. Specifically, the positive matrix factorization model indicated that diesel engine emissions, gasoline engine emissions, wood combustion sources, and coal combustion sources contributed 22, 32, 24, and 22% of ∑PAHs, respectively. Based on the sediment quality guidelines, mean effects range median quotient, ecological risk quotient, and toxicity equivalent quotient methods, the comprehensive assessment results of PAHs in Baiyang Lake sediments indicated that the ecological risks were at medium and low levels. The priority pollutant list showed that benzo[b]fluoranthene and benzo[a]pyrene were the highest-priority pollutants and thus should be given more attention.

Comprehensive Assessment of Groundwater Quality of Drinking Water Intakes of the City of Saki

The results of comprehensive assessment of the qualitative composition of groundwater, used for water supply in the city of Saki of the Republic of Crimea, are presented. The parameters, for which the excess of the maximum permissible concentrations was mainly recorded, include: mineralization, total hardness, content of chlorides, nitrates, magnesium, boron and selenium. For all wells, used for water supply in Saki, the value of integral indicator of drinking water danger exceeded 1, which indicates the need to develop and implement a list of measures, aimed at improving the composition of water resources. To do this, it is advisable to provide water treatment in the form of desalination of water using reverse osmosis technology.

Research on Medical Problems Based on Mathematical Models

Mathematical modeling can help the medical community to more fully understand and explore the physiological and pathological processes within the human body and can provide more accurate and reliable medical predictions and diagnoses. Neural network models, machine learning models, and statistical models, among others, have become important tools. The paper details the applications of mathematical modeling in the medical field: by building differential equations to simulate the patient’s cardiovascular system, physicians can gain a deeper understanding of the pathogenesis and treatment of heart disease. With machine learning algorithms, medical images can be better quantified and analyzed, thus improving the precision and accuracy of diagnosis and treatment. In the drug development process, network models can help researchers more quickly screen for potentially active compounds and optimize them for eventual drug launch and application. By mining and analyzing a large number of medical data, more accurate and comprehensive disease risk assessment and prediction results can be obtained, providing the medical community with a more scientific and accurate basis for decision-making. In conclusion, research on medical problems based on mathematical models has become an important part of modern medical research, and great progress has been made in different fields.

Relationships between quality of life and comprehensive geriatric assessment among seniors - a cross-sectional study in Krakow, Poland.

B a c k g r o u n d: Due to current increased life expectancy, the quality of life (QoL) of senior patients is gaining in importance. The aims of this study were: to estimate QoL in a group of patients, aged above 64 years, that is cared for by general practitioners (GPs) in Krakow, Poland, and to find relation- ships between elements of QoL and the results of comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA) and other important medical and social factors. M e t h o d s: We designed a cross-sectional, questionnaire study among patients who attended GPs' surgeries from April 2018 to April 2019. To examine the patients, we used the Euro-Quality of Life Questionnaire (EQ-5D-5L) and eight scales forming CGA: the Activities of Daily Living, the Instrumental Activities of Daily Living, Mini-Mental State Examination, Geriatric Depression Scale, Timed Up and Go Test, Mini Nutritional Assessment, Clinical Frailty Scale and Athens Insomnia Scale. R e s u l t s: The lowest QoL was observed in dimensions of pain/discomfort and mobility, where 70% and 52% of patients, respectively, reported problems in these areas. Only 91 (21%) respondents had highest results in all five dimensions of QoL. The average score in the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) of the EQ-5D-5L (representing self-rated health on a given day) was 62.36 ± 18.98 points. Statistically significant relationships were observed between QoL and age, physical activity and multimorbidity (in all cases p <0.001). The results of QoL were correlated with every aspect of CGA, while the strongest relationship was noticed between scores in the EQ-5D-5L VAS scale and scales assessing depression and frailty (p <0.001; r = -0.57 both).

Examination of individual residential buildings that were damaged and destroyed as a result of hostilities

From the end of February 2022 until today, the material fund of Ukraine has been destroying by the Russian invaders, including individual residential buildings in every region of Ukraine. The authors carried out a mass technical inspection of more than 500 houses on the territory of the Makariv united territorial community, Buchansky district, Kyiv region. The result of each inspection is a technical report in which recommendations are given for possible restoration or, if necessary, dismantling (liquidation) of the object. All survey objects are divided by the periods of construction: before the 70s of the XX century, from the 70s of the XX century. In the second half of the 90s of the XX century, from the second half of the 00s of the XXI century. To this day. These construction periods are characterized primarily by construction technologies and materials used in construction. The result of this work is a comprehensive assessment of such buildings, with the provision of recommendations, that were damaged as a result of hostilities. Houses with a wooden frame suffer significant damage from any cause of destruction, and at the end of their useful life, it is economically impractical to restore such houses. Restoration of houses with ceramic brick walls can be economically feasible, but subject to a comprehensive assessment of each defect and damage, it is affected by the type of interior equipment, the mortar on which the masonry is laid, the location of the wall, etc. Restoration of houses, the walls of which are made of shell blocks, require a separate assessment, the determination of the condition of the masonry is quite limited and requires additional scientific research. Restoration of buildings, the walls of which are made of aerated concrete blocks, is mostly not physically possible, the use of the remains of a destroyed building when building a new one is inadmissible. The conclusions of this work can be used in the design of new buildings, using new recommendations caused by combat operations, regardless of the functional purpose of the building.

A Multi-Dimensional Comprehensive Assessment (MDCA) Method for the Prioritization of Water Pollution Treatment Technologies in China

Water pollution treatment technology assessment methods can be used to guide the selection of scientific and reasonable water pollution treatment technologies. At present, China has not yet established a standardized methodological system to scientifically evaluate these technologies, which makes it difficult to effectively screen water pollution treatment technologies suitable for specific watersheds or regions and restricts the sustainable development of local economy and society. In this study, an MDCA framework for water pollution treatment technologies was developed using a sustainable assessment approach. The framework begins with the definition of water pollution treatment technologies’ decision-making problems and then proceeds through the following: select potential water pollution treatment technologies; identify indicators; decision making; indicator scoring; indicator weighting; select appropriate assessment model; uncertainty analysis; and other steps to ultimately determine preferred options. To demonstrate the validity and applicability of the framework, typical urban wastewater treatment technologies were selected for case validation. The results showed that the comprehensive assessment results obtained by the multidimensional assessment model based on the ideal point method and weighted method were basically consistent. SBR and TAS can be used as recommended technologies for urban sewage treatment in the study area. However, these two technologies also have shortcomings, such as the unsatisfactory economic benefit of SBR, and the high sludge production and poor resistance to hydraulic shock loading of TAS. Among the six alternative technologies, CWS had the worst environmental benefit, mainly due to the low ammonia removal rate. A2/O has the worst economic and technical performance, mainly due to high investment and operation cost, relatively complex operation management, and poor resistance to hydraulic shock load. The method established in this study can not only select the technology, but also identify the shortcomings of the technology, therefore realizing the systematization and standardization.

Twelve-year neurocognitive decline in HIV is associated with comorbidities, not age: a CHARTER study.

Modern antiretroviral therapy (ART) has increased longevity of people with HIV and shifted the age distribution of the HIV pandemic upward toward that of the general population. This positive development has also led to concerns about premature and/or accelerated neurocognitive and physical ageing due to the combined effects of chronic HIV, accumulating comorbidities, adverse effects or possible toxicities of ART and biological ageing. Here we present results of comprehensive assessments over 12 years of 402 people with HIV in the CNS HIV ART Effects Research (CHARTER) programme, who at follow-up were composed of younger (<60 years) and older (≥60 years) subgroups. Over the 12 years, ART use and viral suppression increased in both subgroups as did systemic and psychiatric comorbidities; participants in both subgroups also evidenced neurocognitive decline beyond what is expected in typical ageing. Contrary to expectations, all these adverse effects were comparable in the younger and older CHARTER subgroups, and unrelated to chronological age. Neurocognitive decline was unrelated to HIV disease or treatment characteristics but was significantly predicted by the presence of comorbid conditions, specifically diabetes, hypertension, chronic pulmonary disease, frailty, neuropathic pain, depression and lifetime history of cannabis use disorder. These results are not consistent with premature or accelerated neurocognitive ageing due to HIV itself but suggest important indirect effects of multiple, potentially treatable comorbidities that are more common among people with HIV than in the general population. Good medical management of HIV disease did not prevent these adverse outcomes, and increased attention to a range of comorbid conditions in people with HIV may be warranted in their care.

Prefrailty subtypes differentially predict 5-year mortality in the functionally independent geriatric population

IntroductionBoth frailty and prefrailty (PF) are related to mortality. However, there is no consensus about the PF subtypes for prediction of the mortality risk. We aimed to compare the 5-year mortality of functionally independent geriatric outpatients with nonfrailty, different PF subtypes and frailty. MethodsThis was a single-center, retrospective cohort study. Community-dwelling older adults who visited the geriatric outpatient clinic in a healthcare institution in Taiwan were enrolled. PF1 was defined based on exhaustion and/or body weight loss whereas PF2 was defined by one or two of the following criteria: weakness, slowness, and low physical activity. Frailty was defined by three or more above criteria. Demographics and results of comprehensive geriatric assessment were compared and Kaplan–Meier survival analysis was used to determine the 5-year survival among the nonfrail, PF1, PF2 and frail groups. ResultsOf the 982 participants, the proportion of PF and frailty was high (PF 45.7% and frailty 24.5%). The cumulative 5-year survival rate of the nonfrail group, PF1, PF2 subgroups and frail group was 98.6%, 95.8%, 89.1% and 81.3% respectively. Age, male sex, PF2 subtype and frailty were significantly associated with 5-year mortality [hazard ratio (95% confidence interval) 1.05 (1.01–1.08), 1.96 (1.08–3.57), 5.18 (1.57–17.09), and 6.87 (2.05–23.04), respectively]. Discussion and conclusionThe proportion of PF and frailty was high in old outpatient population with functional independence. PF2 subtypes and frailty could influence the 5-year mortality risk in these participants. Identifying PF2 participants earlier and instituting prompt intervention may be beneficial in older patients.

Construction and Application of a Comprehensive Evaluation and Assessment System for Clinical Nurses Based on the Support of an Information Technology Platform.

To explore the establishment of an objective, standardised and operable comprehensive evaluation and assessment system for clinical nurses based on the support of an information technology platform and to realise the assessment management of tier nurses before and after promotion. By reviewing the literature and combining the findings with the actual situation of nursing work in hospitals, the clinical nurse comprehensive evaluation assessment criteria were designed and assessed for nurses at different levels in terms of their medical ethics, attendance, performance, theoretical study, professional skills and teaching and then supported by the information technology platform to achieve timely and quick assessment. In 2021, 999 nurses out of the 1037 clinical nurses in our institution completed the assessment. Overall, 888 passed the assessment, 111 failed, and 38 did not complete the assessment due to various reasons. Moreover, 367 nurses were promoted based on the comprehensive evaluation assessment results, and the 111 nurses who failed the assessment had their promotion delayed in accordance with the regulations. The assessment indexes of the clinical nurse comprehensive evaluation assessment system are objective, scientific and operable. They could be used as the basis for nurse promotion and assessment management after promotion and could become a powerful aid for nurse promotion management to realise closed-loop management of nurse hierarchy. The support of information platform makes the operation of the assessment system faster and more convenient and improves the management efficiency.

GIS-Based Watershed Unit Forest Landscape Visual Quality Assessment in Yangshuo Section of Lijiang River Basin, China

The Yangshuo Section of the Lijiang River Basin (YS of LRB) is the essence of the Guilin landscape in China. The typical karst landforms and changing topography form a unique forest landscape in YS of LRB. In order to reveal the visual quality of itse forest landscape, this research used GIS spatial analysis technology combined with Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), the assessment factors were leveled and assigned, and some abstract assessment indicators in the visual quality assessment were quantified. Three primary indicators of forest landscape visual quality (FLVQ) assessment in YS of LRB, including Scenic Quality (SQ), Visual Sensitivity (VS), and Visual Absorption Capability (VAC), are proposed. Visual assessment units are divided based on the watershed, and a process and framework for the comprehensive assessment of FLVQ was established at the watershed scale. The results show that the FLVQ in YS of LRB is generally at a low level. The area percentage of FLVQ at high (13′&amp;11′), medium (9′) and low (7′&amp;5′) levels are 10.95%, 29.67% and 59.38%, respectively. The comprehensive score of FLVQ in the karst area is slightly lower than that in the non-karst area, but the karst area of the units with the highest FLVQ accounts for 99.58% of the FLVQ of karst areas along the Lijiang River distributed in the Lijiang River Scenic Area, greater than that of any other areas. The FLVQ in regions with high vegetation coverage and large topographic changes is relatively higher. Slope, relief amplitude, and vegetation richness directly affect the visual quality of forest landscape. Under the influence of local scenic area protection policies and relatively stable natural climate, the FLVQ in YS of LRB has maintained a stable level in the past 20 years. The areas with low FLVQ are mainly cultivated land and construction land, which have low vegetation coverage and no obvious change in terrain. Based on the comprehensive assessment results of FLVQ in YS of LRB, the management goals and future development suitability of forest landscape is discussed. This research proposes appropriate construction and management strategies for forest landscape structures. The results are helpful for providing a scientific research basis for forest landscape resource conservation, landscape site selection, and forest ecotourism development in the Karst landscape area. The impact of human disturbance on the forest landscape fragmentation and the growth characteristics of forests under different landforms are the focus of future FLVQ research on similar areas.

INDICATORS OF THE QUALITY OF RICE GRAIN AND GROATS DEPENDING ON THE GENOTYPE OF CULTIVARS

The yield and the quality of grain and groats have been determined for rice varieties belonging to different ripening groups: early-ripening Komandor and Yuzhanin, mid-ripening Ukraina 96, Vikont, Admiral, Magic, and Lotto, and late-ripening Fukushikiri, Giza 177, and Sakha 101. As to the quantitative indicators of grain quality, the highest total yield of groats (about 70%) was recorded for early-ripening Yuzhanin, and mid-ripening Lotto, and Magic. The whole kernel output (about 90%) was registered for early-ripening Yuzhanin, mid-ripening Lotto, Vikont, and Ukraina 96, and late-ripening Sakha 101. Early-ripening Yuzhanin and mid-ripening Lotto were distinguished due to high yields and high values of major quantitative characteristics of grain quality (total output of groats, output of whole kernels, 1000-kernel weight). Yuzhanin also had a high content of protein in grain. Groats of mid-ripening Lotto, Magic, Admiral and Vikont, late-ripening Fukushikiri and Giza 177, and early-ripening Yuzhanin had high culinary qualities due to their high volume increase index (when boiled). The structure of groats was the best in early-ripening Yuzhanin, late-ripening Giza 177 and Fukushikiri, mid-ripening Lotto, Magic, and Admiral. Early-ripening Yuzhanin, mid-ripening Lotto, Magic, and Admiral, late-ripening Giza 177 and Fukushikiri were distinguished due to their groats colour; mid-ripening Vikont, Magic, and Admiral, late-ripening Giza 177, and early-ripening Yuzhanin – due to the groats aroma; mid-ripening Lotto, Vikont, Magic, and Admiral, early-ripening Yuzhanin, late-ripening Giza 177 and Sakha 101 – due to their palatability. By the set of parameters indicating the culinary quality of groats (increase index, structure, colour, aroma, palatability), early-ripening Yuzhanin, mid-ripening Lotto, Admiral, Magic, and Vikont, late-ripening Fukushikiri and Giza 177 were higher than the reference variety Ukraina 96. The results of comprehensive assessment of yields, grain quality, and culinary qualities of the groats have allowed singling out two cultivars: early-ripening Yuzhanin and mid-ripening Lotto. They have been found valuable enough to be more widely used in the production of rice grain and groats. New rice lines with high culinary qualities of groats have been originated from crossing the varieties having high-quality groats, in particular, Yuzhanin and Lotto.

Correlation between medical student empathy and a Korean nationwide comprehensive clinical assessment score at a medical school in Korea.

Empathy is the ability to understand and communicate a patient’s situation, perspective, and feelings. When demonstrated by healthcare professionals, this can improve patient adherence, satisfaction, and treatment outcomes. Empathic students have stronger affective skills and can acquire, develop, reinforce, and display strong affective behaviors, abilities, and attitudes.We measured student empathy using the Student Version of the Jefferson Scale of Empathy (JSE-S) and assessed 3-year sequential clinical comprehensive assessment scores conducted by the Korean Medical Education Assessment Corporation to determine the relationship between JSE-S and clinical comprehensive assessment scores.The study population comprised of 80 males (74%) and 28 females (26%), among which 38 (35%) and 62 (57%) students wanted to become private physicians and attending faculty, respectively. Regarding future majors, 58 students (54%) considered medical fields, whereas 40 students (37%) considered surgical fields. No significant differences in Korean JSE-S were observed according to medical student gender, career aspirations, or future major fields.The modified Korean version of the JSE-S has 18 items. Item-total score correlations and Cronbach α evaluated the internal consistency reliability of the scale. The reliability of the Korean JSE-S was 0.910 by Cronbach α coefficient.Female students had better scores than males. Students who wanted to be an attending faculty had better scores than others who wanted to be private physicians; however, these findings were not statistically significant. Significantly higher scores were seen among students aspired to work in the medical field (65.6 ± 8.8) versus in the surgical field (60.4 ± 8.2) in their 5th year (P < .01).We were unable to show the positive correlations between the empathy scale and comprehensive assessment results. Among female medical students, comprehensive assessment results were inversely correlated with empathy toward the patient, but this was not statistically significant.The modified Korean JSE-S has acceptable reliability. Every student had a better comprehensive assessment after studying the medical curriculum between the 4th and 6th years. The current nationwide assessment tool does not measure student empathy.
