Event-Related Potential Changes Following 12-week Yoga Practice in T2DM Patients: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

Introduction. Type 2 diabetes patients are more likely to experience cognitive decline (1.5%) and dementia (1.6%) than healthy individuals. Although cognitive impairment adversely affects Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients, it is the least addressed complication of T2DM patients. Objective. The present study attempts to examine the changes in cognitive performance of T2DM patients and the probable factors contributing to the changes following 12-week yoga practice. Methods. The current study is a parallel group randomized controlled trial that compared the outcomes of the participants randomized to a yoga group (YG) (n = 25) and to a wait-list control group (n = 29). The study assessed N200 and N450 event-related potential (ERP) components following the Stroop task, heart rate variability (HRV) and HbA1c before and after the intervention. Results. The mean amplitude of the N200 ERP component showed a significant group difference after the intervention, demonstrating an improved neural efficiency in the process of conflict monitoring and response inhibition. No differences were present for the N450 component. T2DM patients showed reduced heart rate and increased mean RR following yoga practice without any corresponding changes in other HRV parameters, demonstrating an overall improvement in cardiac activity. Along with that yoga practice also reduced HbA1c levels in T2DM patients, indicating improved glycemic control. Moreover, HbA1c levels were negatively correlated with reaction time after the intervention, indicating an impact of glycemic control on cognitive performance. Conclusion. The 12-week yoga practice improved cognitive performance by enhancing the processes of conflict monitoring and response inhibition. Further, improved cognitive performance postintervention was facilitated by improved glycemic control.

Perception of social inclusion/exclusion and response inhibition in adolescents with past suicide attempt: a multidomain task-based fMRI study.

The occurrence of suicidal behaviors increases during adolescence. Hypersensitivity to negative social signals and deficits in cognitive control are putative mechanisms of suicidal behaviors, which necessitate confirmation in youths. Multidomain functional neuroimaging could enhance the identification of patients at suicidal risk beyond standard clinical measures. Three groups of adolescents (N = 96; 78% females, age = 11.6-18.1) were included: patients with depressive disorders and previous suicide attempts (SA, n = 29); patient controls with depressive disorders but without anysuicide attempt history (PC, n = 35); and healthy controls (HC, n = 32). We scanned participants with 3T-MRI during social inclusion/exclusion (Cyberball Game) and response inhibition (Go-NoGo) tasks. Neural activation was indexed by the blood-oxygenation-level dependent (BOLD) of the hemodynamic response during three conditions in the Cyberball Game ("Control condition", "Social Inclusion", and "Social Exclusion"), and two conditions in Go-NoGo task ("Go" and "NoGo" blocks). ANCOVA-style analysis identified group effects across three whole-brain contrasts: 1) NoGo vs. Go, 2) Social inclusion vs. control condition, 3) Social exclusion vs. control condition. We found that SA had lower activation in the left insula during social inclusion vs. control condition compared to PC and HC. Moreover, SA compared to PC had higher activity in the right middle prefrontal gyrus during social exclusion vs. control condition, and in bilateral precentral gyri during NoGo vs. Go conditions. Task-related behavioral and self-report measures (Self-reported emotional reactivity in the Cyberball Game, response times and number of errors in the Go-NoGo Task) did not discriminate groups. In conclusion, adolescent suicidal behaviors are likely associated with neural alterations related to the processing of social perception and response inhibition. Further research, involving prospective designs and diverse cohorts of patients, is necessary to explore the potential of neuroimaging as a tool in understanding the emergence and progression of suicidal behaviors.

The effects of cocaine use severity and abstinence on behavioral performance and neural processes of response inhibition

Previous studies identified cerebral markers of response inhibition dysfunction in cocaine dependence. However, whether deficits in response inhibition vary with the severity of cocaine use or ameliorate during abstinence remain unclear. This study aimed to address these issues and the neural mechanisms supporting the individual variation. We examined the data of 67 individuals with cocaine dependence (CD) and 84 healthy controls (HC) who underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging during a stop-signal task (SST). The stop-signal reaction time (SSRT) was computed using the integration method, with a longer SSRT indicating poorer response inhibition. The results showed that, while CD and HC did not differ significantly in SSRT, years of cocaine use (YOC) and days of abstinence (DOA) were each positively and negatively correlated with the SSRT in CD. Whole-brain regressions of stop minus go success trials on SSRT revealed correlates in bilateral superior temporal gyrus (STG) in response inhibition across CD and HC. Further, mediation and path analyses revealed that YOC and DOA affected SSRT through the STG activities in CD. Together, the findings characterized the contrasting effects of cocaine use severity and abstinence on response inhibition as well as the neural processes that support these effects in cocaine dependence.

Locus Coeruleus Integrity Is Linked to Response Inhibition Deficits in Parkinson's Disease and Progressive Supranuclear Palsy.

Parkinson's disease (PD) and progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) both impair response inhibition, exacerbating impulsivity. Inhibitory control deficits vary across individuals and are linked with worse prognosis, and lack improvement on dopaminergic therapy. Motor and cognitive control are associated with noradrenergic innervation of the cortex, arising from the locus coeruleus (LC) noradrenergic system. Here we test the hypothesis that structural variation of the LC explains response inhibition deficits in PSP and PD. Twenty-four people with idiopathic PD, 14 with PSP-Richardson's syndrome, and 24 age- and sex-matched controls undertook a stop-signal task and ultrahigh field 7T magnetization-transfer-weighted imaging of the LC. Parameters of "race models" of go- versus stop-decisions were estimated using hierarchical Bayesian methods to quantify the cognitive processes of response inhibition. We tested the multivariate relationship between LC integrity and model parameters using partial least squares. Both disorders impaired response inhibition at the group level. PSP caused a distinct pattern of abnormalities in inhibitory control with a paradoxically reduced threshold for go responses, but longer nondecision times, and more lapses of attention. The variation in response inhibition correlated with the variability of LC integrity across participants in both clinical groups. Structural imaging of the LC, coupled with behavioral modeling in parkinsonian disorders, confirms that LC integrity is associated with response inhibition and LC degeneration contributes to neurobehavioral changes. The noradrenergic system is therefore a promising target to treat impulsivity in these conditions. The optimization of noradrenergic treatment is likely to benefit from stratification according to LC integrity.SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT Response inhibition deficits contribute to clinical symptoms and poor outcomes in people with Parkinson's disease and progressive supranuclear palsy. We used cognitive modeling of performance of a response inhibition task to identify disease-specific mechanisms of abnormal inhibitory control. Response inhibition in both patient groups was associated with the integrity of the noradrenergic locus coeruleus, which we measured in vivo using ultra-high field MRI. We propose that the imaging biomarker of locus coeruleus integrity provides a trans-diagnostic tool to explain individual differences in response inhibition ability beyond the classic nosological borders and diagnostic criteria. Our data suggest a potential new stratified treatment approach for Parkinson's disease and progressive supranuclear palsy.

Irrelevant emotional expressions interfered with response inhibition: the role of contrast emotions

ABSTRACT Irrelevant emotional faces would facilitate or inhibit response inhibition, depending on how these faces are paired with different emotional faces. In previous studies, angry faces were either paired with neutral, happy, or fearful faces in the response inhibition task, potentially leading to mixed results. This is the first study where all four irrelevant emotional faces (happy, angry, fearful, and neutral) were used simultaneously and presented in the same block as a stop-signal in the stop-signal paradigm. Participants were required to respond to the go signals. Occasionally, a stop-signal with irrelevant facial expressions was presented, where participants were required to withhold their motor response. All stop signals with irrelevant emotional facial expressions in comparison to neutral facial expressions interfered with the response inhibition process. Our results extend previous findings by suggesting that approach and avoidance reactions to facial expressions depend on the contrasting emotions presented in the task.

Interplay between alpha and theta band activity enables management of perception-action representations for goal-directed behavior

Goal-directed behavior requires integrated mental representations of perceptions and actions. The neurophysiological underpinnings of these processes, however, are not yet understood. It is particularly undetermined, which oscillatory activities in which brain regions are involved in the management of perception-action representations. We examine this question with a focus on response inhibition processes and show that the dynamics of perception-action representations reflected in theta band activity (TBA) are particularly evident in the supplementary motor area and the occipito-temporal cortex. Mental representations coded in alpha band activity (ABA) during perception-action integration are associated with the occipito-temporal cortex. Crucially, perception-action representations are exchanged between theta and alpha frequency bands. The results imply that ABA functions as dynamic top-down control over binding, retrieval and reconfiguration processes during response inhibition, which in turn are reflected by TBA. Our study thus highlights how the interplay of oscillatory activity enables the management of perception-action representations for goal-directed behavior.

Neural substrates of behavioral inhibitory control during the two-choice oddball task: functional neuroimaging evidence.

Behavioral inhibitory control (BIC) depicts a cognitive function of inhibiting inappropriate dominant responses to meet the context requirement. Despite abundant research into neural substrates of BIC during the go/no-go and stop signal tasks, these tasks were consistently shown hard to isolate neural processes of response inhibition, which is of primary interest, from those of response generation. Therefore, it is necessary to explore neural substrates of BIC using the two-choice oddball (TCO) task, whose design of dual responses is thought to produce an inhibition effect free of the confounds of response generation. The current study aims at depicting neural substrates of performing behavioral inhibitory control in the two-choice oddball task, which designs dual responses to balance response generation. Also, neural substrates of performing BIC during this task are compared with those in the go/no-go task, which designs a motor response in a single condition. The present study integrated go/no-go (GNG) and TCO tasks into a new Three-Choice BIC paradigm, which consists of standard (75%), deviant (12.5%), and no-go (12.5%) conditions simultaneously. Forty-eight college students participated in this experiment, which required them to respond to standard (frequent) and deviant stimuli by pressing different keys, while inhibiting motor response to no-go stimuli. Conjunction analysis and ROI (region of interest) analysis were adopted to identify the unique neural mechanisms that subserve the processes of BIC. Both tasks are effective in assessing BIC function, reflected by the significantly lower accuracy of no-go compared to standard condition in GNG, and the significantly lower accuracy and longer reaction time of deviant compared to standard condition in TCO. However, there were no significant differences between deviant and no-go conditions in accuracy. Moreover, functional neuroimaging has demonstrated that the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) activation was observed for no-go vs. standard contrast in the GNG task, but not in deviant vs. standard contrast in the TCO task, suggesting that ACC involvement is not a necessary component of BIC. Second, ROI analysis of areas that were co-activated in TCO and GNG showed co-activations in the right inferior frontal cortex (triangle and orbital), with the signals in the TCO task significantly higher than those in the GNG task. These findings show that the designed responses to both standard and deviant stimuli in the TCO task, compared to the GNG task, produced a more prominent prefrontal inhibitory processing and extinguished an unnecessary component of ACC activation during BIC. This implies that prefrontal involvement, but not that of ACC, is mandatory for the successful performance of inhibiting prepotent behaviors.

A dual-task approach to inform the taxonomy of inhibition-related processes.

Response inhibition is key to controlled behavior and is commonly investigated with the stop-signal paradigm. The authors investigated how response inhibition is situated within a taxonomy of control processes by combining multiple forms of control within dual tasks. Response inhibition, as measured by stop-signal reaction time (SSRT), was impaired when combined with shape matching, but not the flanker task, and when combined with cued task switching, but not predictable task switching, suggesting that response inhibition may be weakly or variably impaired when combined with selective attention and set shifting demands, respectively. Response inhibition was also consistently impaired when combined with the N-back or directed forgetting tasks, putative measures of working memory. Impairments of response inhibition by other control demands appeared to be primarily driven by task context, as SSRT slowing was similar for trials where control demands were either high (e.g., task switch) or low (e.g., task stay). These results demonstrate that response inhibition processes are often impaired in the context of other control demands, even on trials where direct engagement of those other control processes is not required. The impact of traumatic brain injury on inhibitory control processes assessed using a delayed antisaccade task

It has been well established that traumatic brain injury (TBI) can affect cognitive function such as attention, working memory and executive functions. In the present study, we further investigated TBI-related changes in cognitive functions by investigating the ability to reorient visuospatial attention using a modified antisaccade task. Performing an antisaccade requires disengaging attention, inhibiting a reflexive saccade, and then engaging attention to execute a voluntary saccade in a direction opposite to a peripheral target. Particularly we quantified the time (latency), and accuracy (directional and disinhibition errors) of 26 TBI and 33 normal participants in making an antisaccade after a variable period of delay (0, 0.0625, 0.125, 0.250, 0.500 or 1.0 s). Changing the delay period allowed to systematically quantify the temporal and spatial characteristics of preparing and initiating an antisaccade and whether this process is affected by TBI. TBI participants took longer (approximately 33–66 ms for variable delays) to generate correct delayed antisaccades and showed increased directional errors (2–11 % for variable delays) and increased disinhibition prosaccade errors (2–6 % for variable delays) compared to controls. However, both groups made similar disinhibition antisaccade errors. These findings indicate that TBI participants required a longer time to process information, and a possible poorer response inhibition and poor spatial information processing due to head injury.

Temporal Changes in the State Effect of Meditation on Response Inhibition Processes

ObjectivesA single session of brief focused attention meditation (FAM) has a state effect, which temporarily enhances response inhibition processes. However, previous research has two unanswered questions: (i) How long does the state effect last? (ii) How does effort toward FAM relate to the resulting state effect?MethodThirty-nine healthy participants participated in two sessions: FAM and sham meditation (SHAM). The participants conducted each meditation for 10 min. The state effect on response inhibition processes was observed as Stroop task performance immediately before and after each meditation, and 20, 40, and 60 min after each meditation. In addition, the subjective effort toward meditation was evaluated using a questionnaire immediately after each meditation.ResultsAn analysis of variance revealed a significant interaction between session and time. In the post-hoc analysis, FAM showed significantly better Stroop task performance than the SHAM 60 min after meditation. Furthermore, using correlational analysis, we found that at 60 min, the higher the subjective effort, the better Stroop task performance.ConclusionsIn contrast to previous findings, the state effect was not found immediately after FAM but instead 60 min after. The results can be partially explained by cognitive fatigue; that is, the FAM may have the state effect of preventing cognitive fatigue. This state effect is greater when the subjective effort is greater.

Proactive Interhemispheric Disinhibition Supports Response Preparation during Selective Stopping.

Response inhibition is essential for terminating inappropriate actions. A substantial response delay may occur in the nonstopped effector when only part of a multieffector action is terminated. This stopping-interference effect has been attributed to nonselective response inhibition processes and can be reduced with proactive cuing. This study aimed to elucidate the role of interhemispheric primary motor cortex (M1-M1) influences during selective stopping with proactive cuing. We hypothesized that stopping-interference would be reduced as stopping certainty increased because of proactive recruitment of interhemispheric facilitation or inhibition when cued to respond or stop, respectively. Twenty-three healthy human participants of either sex performed a bimanual anticipatory response inhibition paradigm with cues signaling the likelihood of a stop-signal occurring. Dual-coil transcranial magnetic stimulation was used to determine corticomotor excitability (CME), interhemispheric inhibition (IHI), and interhemispheric facilitation (IHF) in the left hand at rest and during response preparation. Response times slowed and stopping-interference decreased with increased stopping certainty. Proactive response inhibition was marked by a reduced rate of rise and faster cancel time in electromyographical bursts during stopping. There was a nonselective release of IHI but not CME from rest to in-task response preparation, whereas IHF was not observed in either context. An effector-specific reduction in CME but no reinstatement of IHI was observed when the left hand was cued to stop. These findings indicate that stopping speed and selectivity are better with proactive cueing and that interhemispheric M1-M1 channels modulate inhibitory tone during response preparation to support going but not proactive response inhibition.SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT Response inhibition is essential for terminating inappropriate actions and, in some cases, may be required for only part of a multieffector action. The present study examined interhemispheric influences between the primary motor cortices during selective stopping with proactive cuing. Stopping selectivity was greater with increased stopping certainty and was marked by proactive adjustments to the hand cued to stop and hand cued to respond separately. Inhibitory interhemispheric influences were released during response preparation but were not directly involved in proactive response inhibition. These findings indicate that between-hand stopping can be selective with proactive cuing, but cue-related improvements are unlikely to reflect the advance engagement of interhemispheric influences between primary motor cortices.

The cognitive neural mechanism of response inhibition and error processing to fearful expressions in adolescents with high reactive aggression.

Reactive aggression in adolescents is characterized by high levels of impulsivity. This is associated with deficits in response inhibition and error processing and spontaneous emotion-driven responses to a perceived threat. However, the characteristics and cognitive neural mechanisms of response inhibition and error processing to indirect threat in adolescents with high levels of reactive aggression are unclear. This study explored the characteristics and cognitive neural mechanisms of response inhibition and error processing to fearful expressions in adolescents with high levels of reactive aggression using an emotional Go/No-Go paradigm combined with ERP recordings. Adolescents with high levels of reactive aggression (n = 31) and a control group (n = 30) took part in this study. Results showed that when presented with fearful expressions, adolescents with high levels of reactive aggression showed a smaller No-Go P3 effect and smaller ERN amplitudes following commission errors on the No-Go task than the control group. Results suggested that when presented with fearful expressions, adolescents with high levels of reactive aggression have impaired response inhibition in the later stage of actual inhibitory control of the motor system and impaired error processing in the early stage of fast and automatic initial error detection.

Linking Sleep and Aggression: Examining the Role of Response Inhibition and Emotional Processing.

Although sleep loss is theorized to increase aggression risk, knowledge regarding the sleep-aggression relationship, or explanatory psychological processes, is limited. This study examined whether recent sleep duration predicted subsequent laboratory aggression, and whether neurocognitive indices of attentional and motor inhibition and negative emotional processing explained the sleep-aggression relationship. Participants (n=141) wore Fitbit Flex devices and kept a sleep diary for three days. Event-related potentials were measured during an Emotional-Linguistic Go/No-Go task, followed by a laboratory aggression paradigm. Results of mixed-model repeated measures ANOVAs linked shorter sleep duration with reduced motor inhibition processing during negative and neutral word blocks, and greater aggression. However, neurocognitive indices did not explain the sleep-aggression link. This is the first evidence that naturally occurring sleep loss predicts increases in laboratory aggression across the task and suggests that shorter sleepers are more vulnerable to rash action in negative and neutral contexts. Implications of these findings for understanding aggression will be discussed.

Levodopa alters resting-state functional connectivity more selectively in Parkinson's disease with freezing of gait.

Freezing of gait (FOG) is a debilitating motor symptom of Parkinson's disease (PD). Although PD dopaminergic medication (L-DOPA) seems to generally reduce FOG severity, its effect on neural mechanisms of FOG remains to be determined. The purpose of this study was to quantify the effect of L-DOPA on brain resting-state functional connectivity in individuals with FOG. Functional magnetic resonance imaging was acquired at rest in 30 individuals living with PD (15 freezers) in the ON- and OFF- medication state. A seed-to-voxel analysis was performed with seeds in the bilateral basal ganglia nuclei, the thalamus and the mesencephalic locomotor region. In freezers, medication-state contrasts revealed numerous changes in resting-state functional connectivity, not modulated by L-DOPA in non-freezers. In freezers, L-DOPA increased the functional connectivity between the seeds and regions including the posterior parietal, the posterior cingulate, the motor and the medial prefrontal cortices. Comparisons with non-freezers revealed that L-DOPA generally normalizes brain functional connectivity to non-freezers levels but can also increase functional connectivity, possibly compensating for dysfunctional networks in freezers. Our findings suggest that L-DOPA could contribute to a better sensorimotor, attentional, response inhibition and limbic processing to prevent FOG when triggers are encountered but could also contribute to FOG by interfering with the processing capacity of the striatum. This study shows that levodopa taken to control PD symptoms induces changes in functional connectivity at rest, in freezers only. Increases (green) in functional connectivity of GPe, GPi, putamen and thalamus with cognitive, sensorimotor and limbic cortical regions of the Interference model (blue) was observed. Our results suggest that levodopa can normalize connections similar to non-freezers or increases connectivity to compensate for dysfunctional networks.

Binding of task-irrelevant contextual features in task switching.

Research in attention and action control produced substantial evidence suggesting the presence of feature binding. This study explores the binding of task-irrelevant context features in cued task switching. We predicted that repeating a context feature in trial n retrieves the trial n - 1 episode. Consequently, performance should improve when the retrieved features match the features of the current trial. Two experiments (N = 124; N = 96) employing different tasks and materials showed that repeating the task-irrelevant context improved performance when the task and the response repeated. Furthermore, repeating the task-irrelevant context increased task repetition benefits only when the context feature appeared synchronously with cue onset, but not when the context feature appeared with a 300-ms delay (Experiment 1). Similarly, repeating the task-irrelevant context improved performance when the task and the response repeated only when the context feature was part of the cue, and not when it was part of the target (Experiment 2). Taken together, binding and retrieval processes seem to play a crucial role in task switching, alongside response inhibition processes. In turn, our study provided a better understanding of binding and retrieval of task-irrelevant features in general, and specifically on how they modulate response repetition benefits in task repetitions.

Functional gradients in the human lateral prefrontal cortex revealed by a comprehensive coordinate-based meta-analysis.

The lateral prefrontal cortex (LPFC) of humans enables flexible goal-directed behavior. However, its functional organization remains actively debated after decades of research. Moreover, recent efforts aiming to map the LPFC through meta-analysis are limited, either in scope or in the inferred specificity of structure-function associations. These limitations are in part due to the limited expressiveness of commonly-used data analysis tools, which restricts the breadth and complexity of questions that can be expressed in a meta-analysis. Here, we adopt NeuroLang, a novel approach to more expressive meta-analysis based on probabilistic first-order logic programming, to infer the organizing principles of the LPFC from 14,371 neuroimaging studies. Our findings reveal a rostrocaudal and a dorsoventral gradient, respectively explaining the most and second most variance in meta-analytic connectivity across the LPFC. Moreover, we identify a unimodal-to-transmodal spectrum of coactivation patterns along with a concrete-to-abstract axis of structure-function associations extending from caudal to rostral regions of the LPFC. Finally, we infer inter-hemispheric asymmetries along the principal rostrocaudal gradient, identifying hemisphere-specific associations with topics of language, memory, response inhibition, and sensory processing. Overall, this study provides a comprehensive meta-analytic mapping of the LPFC, grounding future hypothesis generation on a quantitative overview of past findings.

The Effect of Serious Games on Response Inhibition, Selective Attention and Visual-Spatial Processing in Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD): BrainـTrain and Cogniplus Games CogniPlus

Background and Aims This study aims to compare the effectiveness of two computerized cognitive training applications, “Brain Train” and" CogniPlus”, in improving the response inhibition, selective attention, and visual-spatial processing speed of children with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Methods This is a quasi-experimental. Participants were 45 elementary school students diagnosed with ADHD who were selected by a convenience sampling method. The students were divided randomly into three groups: intervention group 1 (n=15, receiving training by Brain Train), intervention group 2 (n=15, receiving training by CogniPlus) and control (n=15). Each intervention group separately received training for two months, three session per week, each for 50-60-minutes. Performance of three groups were evaluated in response inhibition, selective attention, and visual-spatial processing in pre-test and post-test phases using Stroop test, the integrated visual and auditory continuous performance test (IVA+Plus), and visual-spatial processing subscale of the Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scales. Collected data were analyzed using the analysis of covariance. Results Results showed a significant difference between the two intervention groups in the study variables (P<0.05), but there was no significant difference between two intervention groups in improving selective attention and response inhibition (P>0.05). However, in visual-spatial processing, the group received training by Brain Train application showed a significant improvement more than the group received training by CogniPlus (P< 0.05). Conclusion Computerized cognitive training applications can improve the cognitive skills of children with ADHD, where the Brain Train application is more effective than Cogniplus regarding the visual-spatial processing ability.

A possibility of error-related processing contamination in the No-go N2: The effect of partial-error trials on response inhibition processing.

This study investigated whether error‐related negativity (ERN) elicited by partial errors and No‐go N2 represent distinct or similar components. We also investigated whether the error positivity (Pe) and No‐go P3 represent distinct or similar components. Partial‐error trials are behaviourally classified as correct trials but preceded by covert muscular activities. Recent studies have reported that analysing partial‐error trials is useful for investigating the functional roles of ERN and No‐go N2. In this study, 23 participants performed a Go/No‐go flanker task. They performed nine blocks of 60 trials each. Stimulus‐locked event‐related potentials (ERPs) were averaged separately for Go‐congruent pure‐correct trials, Go‐incongruent pure‐correct trials and No‐go pure‐correct trials. In addition, we compared the stimulus‐locked ERPs among No‐go pure‐correct trials, No‐go partial‐error trials, Go‐incongruent pure‐correct trials and Go‐incongruent partial‐error trials. Electromyogram (EMG)‐locked ERPs were averaged separately for correct trials, overt errors in No‐go trials, partial errors in No‐go trials, overt errors in incongruent trials and partial errors in incongruent trials. N2 was remarkably larger in No‐go partial‐error trials than in No‐go pure‐correct trials. Consistent with previous findings, the No‐go partial‐error N2 might reflect error‐related processing. P3 amplitudes were larger in the No‐go trials than in both the Go‐congruent and Go‐incongruent trials. These results suggest that the No‐go P3, but not the No‐go N2, might reflect inhibition of overt movement. The present findings provide further evidence that the previously reported increase in No‐go N2 may be due to an overlap of the ERN elicited by partial errors.

Characterizing the Neural Correlates of Response Inhibition and Error Processing in Children With Symptoms of Irritability and/or Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder in the ABCD Study®.

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), characterized by symptoms of inattention and/or hyperactivity and impulsivity, is a neurodevelopmental disorder associated with executive dysfunctions, including response inhibition and error processing. Research has documented a common co-occurrence between ADHD and pediatric irritability. The latter is more characterized by affective symptoms, specifically frequent temper outbursts and low frustration tolerance relative to typically developing peers. Shared and non-shared neural correlates of youths with varied profiles of ADHD and irritability symptoms during childhood remain largely unknown. This study first classified a large sample of youths in the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) study at baseline into distinct phenotypic groups based on ADHD and irritability symptoms (N = 11,748), and then examined shared and non-shared neural correlates of response inhibition and error processing during the Stop Signal Task in a subset of sample with quality neuroimaging data (N = 5,948). Latent class analysis (LCA) revealed four phenotypic groups, i.e., high ADHD with co-occurring irritability symptoms (n = 787, 6.7%), moderate ADHD with low irritability symptoms (n = 901, 7.7%), high irritability with no ADHD symptoms (n = 279, 2.4%), and typically developing peers with low ADHD and low irritability symptoms (n = 9,781, 83.3%). Latent variable modeling revealed group differences in the neural coactivation network supporting response inhibition in the fronto-parietal regions, but limited differences in error processing across frontal and posterior regions. These neural differences were marked by decreased coactivation in the irritability only group relative to youths with ADHD and co-occurring irritability symptoms and typically developing peers during response inhibition. Together, this study provided initial evidence for differential neural mechanisms of response inhibition associated with ADHD, irritability, and their co-occurrence. Precision medicine attending to individual differences in ADHD and irritability symptoms and the underlying mechanisms are warranted when treating affected children and families.

Theta low-gamma phase amplitude coupling in the human orbitofrontal cortex increases during a conflict-processing task

Objective. The human orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) is involved in automatic response inhibition and conflict processing, but the mechanism of frequency-specific power changes that control these functions is unknown. Theta and gamma activity have been independently observed in the OFC during conflict processing, while theta–gamma interactions in other brain areas have been noted primarily in studies of memory. Within the OFC, it is possible that theta–gamma phase amplitude coupling (PAC) drives conflict processing. This study aims to characterize the coupled relationship between theta and gamma frequency bands in the OFC during conflict processing using a modified Stroop task. Approach. Eight epilepsy patients implanted with OFC stereotactic electroencephalography electrodes participated in a color-word modified Stroop task. PAC between theta phase and gamma amplitude was assessed to determine the timing and magnitude of neural oscillatory changes. Group analysis was conducted using a non-parametric cluster-permutation t-test on coherence values. Main results. Theta-low gamma (LG) PAC significantly increased in five out of eight patients during successful trials of the incongruent condition compared with the congruent condition. Significant increases in theta-LG PAC were most prominent during cue processing 200–800 ms after cue presentation. On group analysis, trial-averaged mean theta-LG PAC was statistically significantly greater in the incongruent condition compared to the congruent condition (p < 0.001, Cohen’s d = 0.51). Significance. For the first time, we report that OFC theta phase and LG amplitude coupling increases during conflict resolution. Given the delayed onset after cue presentation, OFC theta-LG PAC may contribute to conflict processing after conflict detection and before motor response. This explanation follows the hypothesis that global theta waves modulate local gamma signals. Understanding this relationship within the OFC will help further elucidate the neural mechanisms of human conflict resolution.
