Quantitative bone marrow magnetic resonance imaging in children with lymphoblastic leukaemia

The aim of the study was to evaluate fat fraction (FF) changes in patients diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) in comparison with children without haematological disorders. All the patients or their legal representatives gave their informed consent to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The study was approved by the Independent Ethics Committee and the Scientific Council of the Dmitry Rogachev National Medical Research Center of Pediatric Hematology, Oncology and Immunology and was conducted in line with the Ethical Principles of the World Health Organization (the Declaration of Helsinki) for Medical Research Involving Human Subjects. The study included 33 healthy volunteers aged 13.4 ± 2.8 years (the control group) and 34 patients with acute phase ALL whose mean age was 12.2 ± 3.6 years (the group of interest). Imaging of the pelvic bones and lumbar vertebrae was performed on a Philips Achieva 3T scanner using the mDixon-quant sequence, with a subsequent construction of FF maps. The Mann–Whitney U-test was used to compare the FF data of the cases with each other and with the controls. Four regions of interest were selected, 100 mm2 each: in the bodies of the right and the left iliac bones as well as in the bodies of the L4 and L5 vertebras. For each group of subjects and each region of interest, mean FF was calculated. In the group of the patients with acute phase ALL, FF was the lowest: 3.53 ± 2.75% and 3,72 ± 3.09% in the bodies of the left and right iliac bones respectively, and 2.62 ± 1.86% and 2.47 ± 2.17% in the L4 and L5 vertebras respectively. In the control group, FF in the respective regions of interest was 51.3 ± 9.5%; 49.9 ± 11.0%; 31.3 ± 8.73% and 32.4 ± 10.3%. It is obvious that bone marrow FF in the patients with ALL differs significantly from the control group. Quantitative MRI can become a new method for the assessment of changes in the bone marrow of children with leukaemias.

Increase of Carbon Dioxide and Methane Emissions over Bulgaria on the Base of GOSAT Satellite Data

The paper presents an assessment of the change in carbon dioxide and methane concentrations in the atmosphere over Bulgaria over the last 13 years. GOSAT data for the period April 2009 to the end of 2021 are used for this purpose. The data are presented as monthly averages with a spatial resolution of 2.5 x 2.5 degrees. The seasonal and spatial behaviour of carbon dioxide and methane emissions in the respective regions of interest has also been investigated.

BRACS: A Dataset for BReAst Carcinoma Subtyping in H&E Histology Images.

Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer and registers the highest number of deaths for women. Advances in diagnostic activities combined with large-scale screening policies have significantly lowered the mortality rates for breast cancer patients. However, the manual inspection of tissue slides by pathologists is cumbersome, time-consuming and is subject to significant inter- and intra-observer variability. Recently, the advent of whole-slide scanning systems has empowered the rapid digitization of pathology slides and enabled the development of Artificial Intelligence (AI)-assisted digital workflows. However, AI techniques, especially Deep Learning, require a large amount of high-quality annotated data to learn from. Constructing such task-specific datasets poses several challenges, such as data-acquisition level constraints, time-consuming and expensive annotations and anonymization of patient information. In this paper, we introduce the BReAst Carcinoma Subtyping (BRACS) dataset, a large cohort of annotated Hematoxylin and Eosin (H&E)-stained images to advance AI development in the automatic characterization of breast lesions. BRACS contains 547 Whole-Slide Images (WSIs) and 4539 Regions Of Interest (ROIs) extracted from the WSIs. Each WSI and respective ROIs are annotated by the consensus of three board-certified pathologists into different lesion categories. Specifically, BRACS includes three lesion types, i.e., benign, malignant and atypical, which are further subtyped into seven categories. It is, to the best of our knowledge, the largest annotated dataset for breast cancer subtyping both at WSI and ROI levels. Furthermore, by including the understudied atypical lesions, BRACS offers a unique opportunity for leveraging AI to better understand their characteristics. We encourage AI practitioners to develop and evaluate novel algorithms on the BRACS dataset to further breast cancer diagnosis and patient care. Database URL: https://www.bracs.icar.cnr.it/

An anatomically correct 3D‐printed mouse phantom for magnetic particle imaging studies

We report anatomically correct 3D‐printed mouse phantoms that can be used to plan experiments and evaluate analysis protocols for magnetic particle imaging (MPI) studies. The 3D‐printed phantoms were based on the Digimouse 3D whole body mouse atlas and incorporate cavities representative of a liver, brain tumor, and orthotopic breast cancer tumor placed in anatomically correct locations, allowing evaluation of the effect of precise doses of MPI tracer. To illustrate their use, a constant tracer iron mass was present in the liver for the breast (200 μgFe) and brain tumor (10 μgFe) model, respectively, while a series of decreasing tracer iron mass was placed in the tumor region. MPI scans were acquired in 2D and 3D high sensitivity and high sensitivity/high resolution (HSHR) modes using a MOMENTUM imager. A thresholding algorithm was used to define regions of interest (ROIs) in the scans and the tracer mass in the liver and tumors was calculated by comparison of the signal in their respective ROI against that of known mass fiducials that were included in each scan. The results demonstrate that this approach to image analysis provides accurate estimates of tracer mass. Additionally, the results show how the limit of detection in MPI is sensitive to the details of tracer distribution in the subject, as we found that a greater tracer mass in the liver cavity resulted in poorer sensitivity in tumor regions. These experiments illustrate the utility of the reported 3D‐printed anatomically correct mouse phantoms in evaluating methods to analyze MPI scans and plan in vivo experiments.

Asymmetric practices of reading and writing shape visuospatial attention and discrimination

Movement is generally conceived of as unfolding laterally in the writing direction that one is socialized into. In ‘Western’ languages, this is a left-to-right bias contributing to an imbalance in how attention is distributed across space. We propose that the rightward attentional bias exercises an additional unidirectional influence on discrimination performance thus shaping the congruency effect typically observed in Posner-inspired cueing tasks. In two studies, we test whether faces averted laterally serve as attention orienting cues and generate differences in both target discrimination latencies and gaze movements across left and right hemifields. Results systematically show that right-facing faces (i.e. aligned with the script direction) give rise to an advantage for cue-target pairs pertaining to the right (versus left) side of space. We report an asymmetry between congruent conditions in the form of right-sided facilitation for: (a) response time in discrimination decisions (experiment 1–2) and (b) eye-gaze movements, namely earlier onset to first fixation in the respective region of interest (experiment 2). Left and front facing cues generated virtually equal exploration patterns, confirming that the latter did not prime any directionality. These findings demonstrate that visuospatial attention and consequent discrimination are highly dependent on the asymmetric practices of reading and writing.

Comparison of ESA climate change initiative land cover to CORINE land cover over Eastern Europe and the Baltic States from a regional climate modeling perspective

High-quality land use and land cover (LULC) information is of crucial importance for the performance of regional climate models (RCMs), in particular at high spatial resolutions down to convection permitting scales below 4 km. Several satellite-based high-resolution products are currently available for implementation into RCMs. One of the most recent products is the European Space Agency Climate Change Initiative Land Cover (ESA CCI LC) dataset. While the ESA CCI LC has been assessed globally, an evaluation against regional, independent LULC datasets is necessary to identify LULC inaccuracies in the respective region of interest and to give regional climate modelers estimates for the uncertainty in the land use forcing. In the present work the ESA CCI LC dataset is compared to the COoRdination and INformation on the Environment (CORINE) Land Cover (CLC). Agreement between the datasets is assessed by proportional area comparison (PAC). The resulting agreement measures are compared to the results of a majority approach (MA) to explore possible differences between the methods. Three timesteps of ESA CCI LC matching the timesteps of CLC are assessed to take a change in agreement over time into account. In addition to the quantification of agreement, spatial patterns of possible issues with ESA CCI LC are identified through utilization of geospatial information systems (GIS). Using the PAC, the agreement of ESA CCI LC with CLC is found to be ∼76 % for the research area (RA). Although the agreement decreases slightly using the PAC, no substantial differences in agreement measures were found compared to the results of the MA. Dominant LULC categories agriculture and forest show an agreement of over 80 % with CLC. A few major issues were found for grassland, wetlands, settlements, and water bodies in the RA of which some might influence RCM performance if the dataset is implemented without adjustment. We highly recommend to apply the PAC to other regions in Europe and further globally to investigate if the found issues are also found elsewhere. The use of more independent regional and specified datasets for validation but also for possible improvement of the ESA CCI LC dataset is suggested.

Between-limb Differences In Ultrasound Spatial Frequency Analysis Parameters Following Acute Hamstring Strain Injury

Treatment following hamstring strain injury (HSI) is complicated by a lack of prognostic indicators and high rates of re-injury. Spatial frequency (SF) analysis, a quantitative ultrasound method to assess structural tissue organization, could complement clinical evaluations. PURPOSE: To characterize differences in SF parameters between injured and uninjured limbs following acute HSI in Division I collegiate athletes. METHODS: Ultrasound imaging was performed within one week of HSI, also confirmed by MRI. Longitudinal B-mode images (Aixplorer, Supersonic Imagine, Aix-en-Provence, France) were acquired by a single musculoskeletal-trained sonographer using a linear array transducer (2-10 MHz) at the injury site of maximum tenderness and corresponding location for the uninjured limb. A region of interest (ROI) was drawn about the site of injury and location-matched on the images of the uninjured limb. A 2D Fourier Transform was performed on all possible 5 mm square kernels within the ROI. Peak spatial frequency radius (PSFR), a parameter corresponding to the frequency of the fascicular banding pattern, and Mmax%, a ratio comparing the prominent banded pattern relative to the background, were computed for each kernel. PSFR and Mmax% from all kernels were averaged across respective ROIs. Paired t-tests were used to compare parameter differences between limbs. RESULTS: Seven male athletes sustained HSI (mean age = 19.1 ± 0.8 yrs). PSFR (1/mm) was lower (p = 0.005) in the injured limb (0.81 ± 0.22) compared to the uninjured limb (0.95 ± 0.18). Mmax% was also lower (p = 0.023) in the injured limb (1.44 ± 0.41) compared to the uninjured limb (2.03 ± 0.56). Both measures indicated decreased tissue organization in the injured limb, characterized by disruption of the reflected fascicular banded pattern. CONCLUSION: SF analysis successfully detected differences between injured and uninjured muscle tissue. Although differences in SF parameters between limbs cannot differentiate whether alterations are due to mechanical disruption of fascicles or presence of edema, this method may have promise in identifying structural changes following HSI and in monitoring changes throughout recovery.Supported by NBA & GE Healthcare Orthopedics and Sports Medicine Collaboration and NIH Grant UL1TR002373 and TL1TR002375.

A Novel Data Augmentation Method for Sea Ice Scene Classification of Arctic Aerial Images

In this paper, a novel data augmentation method was proposed for supervised sea ice scene classification with arctic aerial images. Ice-type classification of sea ice scenes in a region is useful for instant navigation. However, some types of sea ice scenes are difficult to collect. The small number of available samples usually limits the performance in classification. Inspiring by the transfer learning method, the training samples are augmented with simulated sea ice images. Considering the distribution characteristic of sea ice scene, simulation samples are synthesized by algebraic operations on the respective regions of interest from two true samples. One of the two true samples can be an additional image, which is more easily collected than others, such as full ice and snow. Simultaneously, it introduces new information. Generalization and error-correction capability of deep neural networks for training samples make the proposed method feasible. The experiments on true sample sets, simulation sample sets, and mixed sample sets were implemented. Finally, the effectiveness of our data augmentation method was demonstrated, which improved the accuracy of sea ice classification.

Magnetization Transfer Ratio in Peripheral Nerve Tissue: Does It Depend on Age or Location?

Magnetization transfer contrast imaging provides indirect information on the concentration of "bound" water protons and their interactions with "free" water molecules. The purpose of this study is to analyze location- and age-dependent changes in the magnetization transfer ratio (MTR) of lower extremity nerves. Ten younger (20-32 years) and 5 older (50-63 years) healthy volunteers underwent magnetization transfer contrast imaging at 3 Tesla Two 3-dimensional gradient echo sequences with and without an off-resonance saturation pulse (repetition time: 58 milliseconds; echo time: 2.46 milliseconds; band width: 530 Hz/Px; flip angle: α = 7°) were acquired at 3 different locations covering the proximal thigh to the distal lower leg in the group of younger volunteers and at 2 different locations covering the proximal to distal thigh in the group of older volunteers. Sciatic and tibial nerve regions of interest (ROIs) were manually drawn and additional ROIs were placed in predetermined muscles. Magnetization transfer ratios were extracted from respective ROIs and calculated for each individual and location. In young volunteers, mean values of nerve and muscle MTR were not different between the proximal thigh (nerve: 20.34 ± 0.91; muscle: 31.71 ± 0.29), distal thigh (nerve: 19.90 ± 0.98; P = 0.76; muscle: 31.53 ± 0.69; P = 0.87), and lower leg (nerve: 20.82 ± 1.07; P = 0.73; muscle: 32.44 ± 1.11; P = 0.51). An age-dependent decrease of sciatic nerve MTR was observed in the group of older volunteers (16.95 ± 1.2) compared with the group of younger volunteers (20.12 ± 0.65; P = 0.019). Differences in muscle MTR were not significant between older (31.01 ± 0.49) and younger (31.62 ± 0.37; P = 0.20) volunteers. The MTR of lower extremity nerves shows no proximal-to-distal gradient in young healthy volunteers but decreases with age. For future studies using MTR in peripheral nerve disorders, these findings suggest that referencing magnetization transfer contrast values in terms of age, but not anatomical nerve location is required.

Cerebral Lactate Concentration in Neonatal Hypoxic-Ischemic Encephalopathy: In Relation to Time, Characteristic of Injury, and Serum Lactate Concentration.

Cerebral lactate concentration can remain detectable in neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) after hemodynamic stability. The temporal resolution of regional cerebral lactate concentration in relation to the severity or area of injury is unclear. Furthermore, the interplay between serum and cerebral lactate in neonatal HIE has not been well defined. The study aims to describe cerebral lactate concentration in neonatal HIE in relation to time, injury, and serum lactate. Fifty-two newborns with HIE undergoing therapeutic hypothermia (TH) were enrolled. Magnetic resonance imaging and spectroscopy (MRI + MR spectroscopy) were performed during and after TH at 54.6 ± 15.0 and 156 ± 57.6 h of life, respectively. Severity and predominant pattern of injury was scored radiographically. Single-voxel 1H MR spectra were acquired using short-echo (35 ms) PRESS sequence localized to the basal ganglia (BG), thalamus (Thal), gray matter (GM), and white matter. Cerebral lactate concentration was quantified by LCModel software. Serum and cerebral lactate concentrations were plotted based on age at time of measurement. Multiple comparisons of regional cerebral lactate concentration based on severity and predominant pattern of injury were performed. Spearman's Rho was computed to determine correlation between serum lactate and cerebral lactate concentration at the respective regions of interest. Overall, serum lactate concentration decreased over time. Cerebral lactate concentration remained low for less severe injury and decreased over time for more severe injury. Cerebral lactate remained detectable even after TH. During TH, there was a significant higher concentration of cerebral lactate at the areas of injury and also when injury was more severe. However, these differences were no longer observed after TH. There was a weak correlation between serum lactate and cerebral lactate concentration at the BG (rs = 0.3, p = 0.04) and Thal (rs = 0.35, p = 0.02). However, in infants with moderate-severe brain injury, a very strong correlation exists between serum lactate and cerebral lactate concentration at the BG (rs = 0.7, p = 0.03), Thal (rs = 0.9 p = 0.001), and GM (rs = 0.6, p = 0.04) regions. Cerebral lactate is most significantly different between regions and severity of injury during TH. There is a moderate correlation between serum and cerebral lactate concentration measured in the deep gray nuclei during TH. Differences in injury and altered regional cerebral metabolism may account for these differences.

Assessment of 11 Available Materials With Custom Three-Dimensional-Printing Patterns for the Simulation of Muscle, Fat, and Lung Hounsfield Units in Patient-Specific Phantoms

A couple of fused deposition modeling (FDM) three-dimensional (3D) printers using variable infill density patterns were employed to simulate human muscle, fat, and lung tissue as it is represented by Hounsfield units (HUs) in computer tomography (CT) scans. Eleven different commercial plastic filaments were assessed by measuring their mean HU on CT images of small cubes printed with different patterns. The HU values were proportional to the mean effective density of the cubes. Polylactic acid (PLA) filaments were chosen. They had good printing characteristics and acceptable HU. Such filaments obtained from two different vendors were then tested by printing two sets of cubes comprising 10 and 6 cubes with 100% to 20% and 100% to 50% infill densities, respectively. They were printed with different printing patterns named “Regular” and “Bricks,” respectively. It was found that the HU values measured on the CT images of the 3D-printed cubes were proportional to the infill density with slight differences between vendors and printers. The Regular pattern with infill densities of about 30%, 90%, and 100% were found to produce HUs equivalent to lung, fat, and muscle. This was confirmed with histograms of the respective region of interest (ROI). The assessment of popular 3D-printing materials resulted in the choice of PLA, which together with the proposed technique was found suitable for the adequate simulation of the muscle, fat, and lung HU in printed patient-specific phantoms.

Forensic hydrology: what function tells about structure in complex settings

Facing the challenges of the European Water Framework Directive and competing demands requires a sound knowledge of the hydrological system. This is a major challenge in regions like Northeast Germany. The landscape has been massively reshaped during repeated advances and retreats of glaciation during the Pleistocene. This resulted in a complex setting of unconsolidated sediments with high textural heterogeneity and with layered aquifer systems, partly confined, but usually of unknown number and extent of single aquifers. The Institute of Landscape Hydrology aims both at a better understanding of hydrological processes and at providing a basis for sustainable water resources management in this region. That would require sound information about the respective regions of interest that are rarely available at sufficient degree of detail. Thus, there is urgent need for alternative approaches. For example, time series of groundwater head, lake water level and stream runoff do not only depend on (unknown) geological structures, but in turn can reveal information about major geological features. To that end, different approaches have been developed and successfully applied at different scales, based both on advanced time series analysis and dimension reduction approaches and on well-known and rather simple methods. This approach has been coined “forensic hydrology”: Like in a crime story, numerous pieces of evidence are combined in a systematic way to end up with a consistent conceptual model about the prevailing cause–effect relationships. An example is given for the Quillow catchment in Northeast Germany in a rather complex geological setting.

Video-based construction vehicles detection and its application in intelligent monitoring system

While vehicle detection on highways has been reported before, to the best of our knowledge, intelligent monitoring system that aims at detecting hydraulic excavators and dump trucks on state-owned land has not been explored thoroughly yet. In this paper, we present an automatic, video-based algorithm for detecting hydraulic excavators and dump trucks. Derived from lessons learned from video processing, we proposed methods for foreground detection based on an improved frame difference algorithm, and then detected hydraulic excavators and dump trucks in the respective region of interest. From our analysis, we proposed methods based on inverse valley feature of mechanical arm and spatial-temporal reasoning for hydraulic excavator detection. In addition, we explored dump truck detection strategies that combine structured component projection with the spatial relationship. Experiments on real-monitoring sites demonstrated the promising performance of our system.

Assessment of cortical damage in early multiple sclerosis with quantitative T2 relaxometry.

T2 relaxation time is a quantitative MRI in vivo surrogate of cerebral tissue damage in multiple sclerosis (MS) patients. Cortical T2 prolongation is a known feature in later disease stages, but has not been demonstrated in the cortical normal appearing gray matter (NAGM) in early MS. This study centers on the quantitative evaluation of the tissue parameter T2 in cortical NAGM in a collective of early MS and clinically isolated syndrome (CIS) patients, hypothesizing that T2 prolongation is already present at early disease stages and variable over space, in line with global and focal inflammatory processes in MS. Additionally, magnetization transfer ratio (MTR) mapping was performed for further characterization of the expected cortical T2 alteration. Quantitative T2 and MTR maps were acquired from 12 patients with CIS and early MS, and 12 matched healthy controls. The lesion-free part of the cortical volume was identified, and the mean T2 and MTR values and their standard deviations within the cortical volume were determined. For evaluation of spatial specificity, cortical lobar subregions were tested separately for differences of mean T2 and T2 standard deviation. We detected significantly prolonged T2 in cortical NAGM in patients. T2 prolongation was found across the whole cerebral cortex and in all individual lobar subregions. Significantly higher standard deviations across the respective region of interest were found for the whole cerebral cortex and all subregions, suggesting the occurrence of spatially inhomogeneous cortical damage in all regions studied. A trend was observed for MTR reduction and increased MTR variability across the whole cortex in the MS group, suggesting demyelination. In conclusion, our results suggest that cortical damage in early MS is evidenced by spatially inhomogeneous T2 prolongation which goes beyond demyelination. Iron deposition, which is known to decrease T2, seems less prominent.

X-ray microtomography (μ-CT) to analyze the pore structure of a Portland cement composite based on the selection of different regions of interest

The necessity to use reduced sample sizes, in order to achieve better spatial resolution in studies on the pore microstructure of Portland cement matrix composites, leads researchers to perform the fractionation of specimens. However, there is always the challenge of how to perform this sampling, so that the representativeness of the whole is not lost, also taking into account the behavior of the material in different regions of the test specimen (TS). In this manner, the porosity of a mortar TS molded in the dimensions of (2×4)cm was analyzed by means of the X-ray microtomography technique (μ-CT), while taking the different respective regions of interest (ROIs) into account. The total porosity of the mortar was also obtained using the techniques of helium and mercury pycnometry. The results shows that the pore structure of cement material is influenced by the region of the test specimen investigated.

Infrared Thermography of the Pig Thorax: An Assessment of Selected Regions of Interest by Computed Tomographical and Anatomical Parameters

SummaryCurrent methods of diagnosis of respiratory diseases in swine are invasive, time‐consuming and expensive. Infrared thermography (IRT) of the thorax might provide a new method of high specificity to select swine affected with lung alterations for further diagnostics. In this study, layer thickness of different tissues was determined in frozen thorax slices (FTS) by computed tomography (CT) and then related to skin temperatures measured by IRT in healthy pigs. The aim was to determine appropriate regions of interest (ROI) for evaluation of IRT images. Organ layer thicknesses measured in CT images correspond to those measured in FTS. Temperature differences between lung ROIs and abdomen ROIs were positively correlated with lung layer thickness at certain localizations, and negatively correlated with the thickness of the thorax wall and of inner organ layers. Reference values of differences between skin temperatures were established for two ROIs on the thorax with potential practical use for lung health status determination. Respective ROIs were located on vertical lines crossing the 7th (right) and the 10th (left) thoracic vertebrae. The presence of ribs affected skin temperature significantly.

Abstract B152: MR-based assessment and quantification of cerebral edema in an orthotopic mouse glioma model.

Abstract Introduction: Brain edema is a prominent feature of brain cancer and contributes to neurologic dysfunction and impaired quality of life. While corticosteroids are the standard of care, improved treatments that are more efficacious and reduce side effects are sought after. In discovery of novel therapies for edema, animal brain tumor models that show relevant, reproducible and high incidence of tumor and cerebral edema are needed. Additionally, quantitative, non-invasive methods for detecting and measuring brain tumor associated edema are needed to facilitate therapeutic discovery efforts. In this work, an intracranial U251-luc human glioma model was characterized for edema incidence and progression. MRI-based relaxivity and contrast-enhancement protocols for edema detection and delineation from tumor tissue, were tested and characterized in the model. Methods: Female nude mice were implanted intracranially with 1×10∧6 U251-luc (Luc-mCherry) glioma cells. Tumor volume assessment was performed by manual segmentation of T1-weighted, gadolinium-enhanced anatomical brain images based on the assumption of tumor enhancement due to leaky vessels or compromised blood-brain barrier. Edema assessment was performed by manual segmentation of T2-weighted anatomical brain images based on the assumption that enhancing regions include tumor tissue in addition to regions of brain edema. The difference in T2-weighted and T1-weighted volumes was assumed to be edema. T2 maps were also generated over the whole brain to measure T2 values over the respective regions of interest, and confirm the differentiation between tumor tissue and edema. Results: Edema volume was successfully distinguished from contrast enhancing tumor tissue and quantified in orthotopically implanted U251-luc (Luc-mCherry) glioma. Incidence was 100%. Edema progression occurred with increasing tumor volume over time. Regions of edema exhibited greater T2 values compared to tumor tissue regions (that also had greater T2 than normal tissue). This is consistent with edematous tissue water content, compared with tumor tissue and normal brain. These results support the use of intracranial U251-luc (Luc-mCherry) as a reliable model for studying the effects of therapies targeting tumor-related cerebral edema, and the application of MR imaging for quantifying those effects real-time in vivo. Prolongation of T2 Stratification after Microfracture Does Not Indicate Normal Cartilage.

Dear Editor, We read with interest the recent article by Domayer et al. titled “Microfracture in the Ankle: Clinical Results and MRI with T2-Mapping at 3.0 T after 1 to 8 Years” (Cartilage Online First, October 18, 2010). The authors concluded that microfracture surgery as a means of treatment for osteochondral lesions of the talus can provide a repair tissue that is similar to that of “adjacent” cartilage when assessed with a relaxation time analysis via quantitative T2-mapping MRI. The inferior biological and mechanical properties of fibrocartilage are well recognized throughout the literature.1-5 Normal articular cartilage is composed primarily of type II collagen, whereas the differentiation of fibrocartilage results in an increased type I collagen composition. We were therefore surprised to learn that the fibrocartilage infill reported in the analysis by Domayer et al. resembled normal cartilage. In our experience, the T2 values of fibrocartilage infill following microfracture never approach the stratification of normal cartilage. In fact, the T2 values are typically diffuse and prolongated, thereby reflecting poor collagen fiber architecture within the repair cartilage (Fig. 1). Figure 1. Coronal quantitative T2-map performed 24 months following microfracture to the lateral aspect of the talar dome demonstrates prolongation of T2 values without color stratification at the site of cartilage repair. We must emphasize that a single T2 measurement within the respective region of interest should not be considered adequate in accurately quantifying the cartilage repair tissue. Standardized regions of interest for quantitative imaging techniques such as T2-mapping should include multiple standardized measurements of the repair tissue (i.e., the central aspect of the defect, the peripheral defect, the interface between the repair and host tissues, the area adjacent to the defect, and a control value that is remote from the defect). These measurements should also be taken in both the deep and superficial halves of repair cartilage. Interestingly, a significant area of prolongation within the repair tissue over the defect is evident in Figure 3A, but it is impossible to know whether or not this was taken into account in the authors’ analysis without a standardized protocol with multiple measurements. We stress that the quantification of repair cartilage following microfracture surgery for osteochondral lesions of the talus must be evaluated further before definitive conclusions can be drawn. The analysis of historical seismograms: an important tool for seismic hazard assessment. Case histories from French and Italian earthquakes

AbstractSeismic hazard assessment relies on the knowledge of the source characteristics of past earthquakes. Unfortunately, seismic waveform analysis, representing the most powerful tool for the investigation of earthquake source parameters, is only possible for events occurred in the last 100–120 years, i.e., since seismographs with known response function were developed. Nevertheless, during this time significant earthquakes have been recorded by such instruments and today, also thanks to technological progress, these data can be recovered and analysed by means of modern techniques.In this paper, aiming at giving a general sketch of possible analyses and attainable results in historical seismogram studies, I briefly describe the major difficulties in processing the original waveforms and present a review of the results that I obtained from previous seismogram analysis of selected significant historical earthquakes occurred during the first decades of the XXth century, including (A) the December 28, 1908, Messina straits (southern Italy), (B) the June 11, 1909, Lambesc (southern France) – both of which are the strongest ever recorded instrumentally in their respective countries –and (C) the July 13, 1930, Irpinia (southern Italy) events. For these earthquakes, the major achievements are represented by the assessment of the seismic moment (A, B, C), the geometry and kinematics of faulting (B, C), the fault length and an approximate slip distribution (A, C). The source characteristics of the studied events have also been interpreted in the frame of the tectonic environment active in the respective region of interest. In spite of the difficulties inherent to the investigation of old seismic data, these results demonstrate the invaluable and irreplaceable role of historical seismogram analysis in defining the local seismogenic potential and, ultimately, for assessing the seismic hazard. The retrieved information is crucial in areas where important civil engineering works are planned, as in the case of the single-span bridge to be built across the Messina straits and the ITER nuclear fusion power plant to be built in Cadarache, close to the location of the Lambesc event, and in regions characterized by high seismic risk, such as southern Apennines.
