Selective laser melting of partially amorphous regolith analog for ISRU lunar applications

As the idea of crewed outposts on the Moon gains momentum, In-Situ Resource Utilization (ISRU) technologies tend to become imperative to fulfill astronauts' needs. This article explores a way to use the lunar regolith as a source material for the additive manufacturing of complex objects, based on the selective laser melting (SLM) technique. A lunar regolith analog, Basalt of Pic d’Ysson (BPY), is used as a starting point for this study, to investigate the now demonstrated impact of amorphous analog content in the powder bed, substrate type, and post-SLM annealing treatments on the mechanical properties of 3D-printed objects. Improvements to the manufacturing and sample extraction stages are proposed to systematically reproduce the high compressive strength values obtained, thus contributing to the robustness and reliability of the process.

Thermal energy resource utilization and sample image restoration technology based on Machine vision simulation in interior design

With the rise of sustainable building design, the traditional design methods are often unable to fully consider the optimal allocation and application of thermal energy resources. This study aims to explore the application of heat resource utilization and sample image restoration technology based on machine vision simulation technology in interior design, and provide practical solutions for optimizing indoor environment. In this paper, machine vision technology is used to monitor and model indoor space in real time, and heat energy flow and distribution under different design schemes are simulated. At the same time, the influence of different designs on thermal energy utilization efficiency is analyzed by using sample image restoration technology. In the study, a set of comprehensive evaluation indexes was established, which comprehensively considered the factors of heat efficiency, indoor comfort and energy consumption. The experimental results show that the simulation technology based on machine vision can accurately predict the indoor heat distribution and identify the best design scheme. At the same time, the sample image restoration technology significantly improves the evaluation accuracy of heat utilization efficiency. Through these methods, the optimized design scheme has higher thermal energy utilization than the traditional design, and significantly improves the indoor comfort. This study shows that the combination of machine vision simulation and sample image restoration technology can effectively improve the utilization efficiency of thermal energy resources in interior design, and provide new ideas and methods for sustainable building design.

Flash sintering of HUST-1 lunar regolith simulant: Effects of processing temperature on microstructure characteristics and mechanical properties

In-situ construction method is expected to be considered for lunar base construction because of its reducing transportation cost. Among the many in-situ construction processes, the flash sintering process can significantly reduce the processing time and become a potentially effective in-situ resource utilization (ISRU) technology. In this study, the flash sintering process was investigated for the first time to realize the sample forming of HUST-1 lunar regolith simulant (LRS). The effects of sintering temperature on the micro- and macrostructural characteristics and mechanical properties of the samples were systematically studied. The results showed that the densities and mechanical properties of the sintered samples were improved with the increase of the sintering temperature (from 1050 °C to 1290 °C) in a low vacuum environment for 4 min. Joule heating effect was investigated to cause rapid high-temperature solid-phase reactions between the LRS particles. At 1290 °C, the compressive strength of the sintered sample reached maximum 59.47 MPa. This study provides an efficient forming method for lunar construction in the future.

Constructing an artificial in vitro multi-enzyme cascade pathway to convert glycerol and CO2 into L-aspartic acid

Developing utilization technologies for biomass resources, exploring their applications in the fields of energy and chemical engineering, holds significant importance for promoting sustainable development and constructing a green, low-carbon society. In this study, we designed a non-natural in vitro multi-enzyme system for converting glycerol and CO2 into L-aspartic acid (L-Asp). The coupled system utilized eight enzymes, including alditol oxidase (ALDO), catalase-peroxidase (CAT), lactaldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH), glycerate 2-kinase (GK), phosphopyruvate hydratase (PPH), phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (PPC), L-aspartate dehydrogenase (ASPD), and polyphosphate kinase (PPK), to convert the raw materials into L-Asp in one-pot coupled with NADH and ATP regeneration. Under optimal reaction conditions, 18.6 mM of L-Asp could be produced within 2.0 h at a total enzyme addition of 4.85 mg/mL, demonstrating the high efficiency and productivity characteristics of the designed system. Our technological application provides new insights and methods for the development of biomass resource utilization technologies.

Future Directions of Sustainable Resource Utilization of Residual Sewage Sludge: A Review

With the simultaneous increase in wastewater generation and wastewater treatment rates in China, the annual production of residual sewage sludge (RSS) has been steadily rising, exceeding 70 million tons with an 80% moisture content. The sustainable resource utilization of RSS will be the predominant disposal method instead of sanitary landfilling in China. This review aimed to systematically analyze the major sustainable resource utilization technologies for RSS. Firstly, the basic characteristics of RSS in China were analyzed. A comparative analysis was conducted to assess the advantages, disadvantages, and applicability of three primary sustainable resource utilization technologies for RSS: building materials, energy utilization, and phosphorus recovery, aiming to provide clear insights for the development of future strategies. The research findings revealed that no single method can economically and environmentally address all challenges in the utilization of RSS resources. It is necessary to adopt appropriate resource utilization technologies according to the characteristics of RSS from wastewater treatment, achieving integration of pollution control and resource utilization. This review can provide scientific guidance for future sustainable utilization of RSS resources.

Comparison of the toxic effects of polystyrene and sulfonated polystyrene on wheat under cadmium stress

With advances in plastic resource utilization technologies, polystyrene (PS) and sulfonated polystyrene (SPS) microplastics continue to be produced and retained in environmental media, potentially posing greater environmental risks. These plastics, due to their different physicochemical properties, may have different environmental impacts when compounded with other pollutants. The objective of this study was to investigate the combined toxic effects of PS and SPS on wheat using cadmium (Cd) as a background contaminant. The results demonstrated that Cd significantly impeded the normal growth of wheat by disrupting root development. Both PS and SPS exhibited hormesis at low concentrations and promoted wheat growth. Under combined toxicity, PS reduced oxidative stress and promoted the uptake of essential metal elements in wheat. Additionally, KEGG pathway analysis revealed that PS facilitated the repair of Cd-induced blockage of the TCA cycle and glutathione metabolism. However, high concentrations of SPS in combined toxicity not only enhanced oxidative stress and interfered with the uptake of essential metal elements, but also exacerbated the blocked TCA cycle and interfered with pyrimidine metabolism. These differences are related to the different stability (Zeta potential, Hydrodynamic particle size) of the two microplastics in the aquatic environment and their ability to carry heavy metal ions, especially Cd. The results of this study provide important insights into understanding the effects of microplastics on crops in the context of Cd contamination and their environmental and food safety implications.

Lunar Regolith Geopolymer Concrete for In-Situ Construction of Lunar Bases: A Review.

The construction of lunar bases represents a fundamental challenge for deep space exploration, lunar research, and the exploitation of lunar resources. In-situ resource utilization (ISRU) technology constitutes a pivotal tool for constructing lunar bases. Using lunar regolith to create geopolymers as construction materials offers multiple advantages as an ISRU technique. This paper discusses the principle of geopolymer for lunar regolith, focusing on the reaction principle of geopolymer. It also analyzes the applicability of geopolymer under the effects of the lunar surface environment and the differences between the highland and mare lunar regolith. This paper summarizes the characteristics of existing lunar regolith simulants and the research on the mechanical properties of lunar regolith geopolymers using lunar regolith simulants. Highland lunar regolith samples contain approximately 36% amorphous substances, the content of silicon is approximately 28%, and the ratios of Si/Al and Si/Ca are approximately 1.5 and 2.6, respectively. They are more suitable as precursor materials for geopolymers than mare samples. The compressive strength of lunar regolith geopolymer is mainly in the range of 18~30 MPa. Sodium silicate is the most commonly utilized activator for lunar regolith geopolymers; alkalinity in the range of 7% to 10% and modulus in the range of 0.8 to 2.0 are suitable. A vacuum environment and multiple temperature cycles reduce the mechanical properties of geopolymers by 8% to 70%. Future research should be concentrated on the precision control of the lunar regolith's chemical properties and the alkali activation efficacy of geopolymers in the lunar environment.

Preparation and property studies of ferric sulfoaluminate cement based on Bayer red mud and phosphogypsum.

The Bayer red mud (RM) and phosphogypsum (PG) accumulation have caused significant environmental contamination. However, practical and effective resource utilization technologies are still lacking currently. This work aims to develop ferric sulfoaluminate cement (FSAC) employing low-cost materials including Bayer red mud, phosphogypsum, and other materials. This method effectively improves the utilization rate of Bayer red mud and phosphogypsum. Under the premise of ensuring the performance of FSAC, the utilization rate of solid waste can reach up to 48.56%. The effects of different red mud dosages on cement mineral formation, workability, and mechanical properties are investigated. Then, untreated phosphogypsum is adopted as a retarder for FSAC, and the hydration process, working properties, mechanical properties, types of hydration products, and morphology of FSAC are explored. The results suggest that the crystal transformation of Ye'elemite is promoted with the increase of Bayer red mud content. Cubic crystal system Ye'elemite with higher hydration activity is generated, which increases the early strength of cement but greatly reduces the setting time, hindering the later strength growth. Untreated phosphogypsum can effectively delay the early hydration process of FSAC, prolong the setting time of cement, and increase the strength of FSAC in the later stage. When the dosage of Bayer red mud and phosphogypsum is 17.64% and 9.21%, respectively, with phosphogypsum dosage of 20%, the prepared FSAC has satisfactory mechanical properties, and the 3-day and 90-day compressive strengths are 34.6 MPa and 57.1 MPa, respectively. In addition, the study of heavy metal leaching indicates that the FSAC prepared by Bayer red mud, phosphogypsum, and other raw materials will generate no environment pollution, and the solidification of heavy metal elements in the cement slurry is superior.

Modeling electrolysis in reduced gravity: producing oxygen from in-situ resources at the moon and beyond

Molten Regolith Electrolysis, as an in situ resource utilization (ISRU) technology, has the potential to enable the production of oxygen and metallic alloys on the Lunar surface; opening new doors in Cis-Lunar, and eventually Martian space exploration. This research studies the fundamental physics which govern the formation, growth, detachment, and rise of electrolytic bubbles. To this end, computational fluid dynamic (CFD) models were developed and run, to simulate water electrolysis, molten salt electrolysis (MSE), and molten Lunar regolith (MRE) electrolysis across multiple reduced gravity levels. The results demonstrate that reduced gravity, electrode surface roughness (possibly due to surface degradation), fluid properties, and electrode orientation can all affect electrolytic efficiency and possibly even stall electrolysis by delaying bubble detachment. The findings of this research must be considered when designing and operating electrolysis systems at reduced gravity levels.

Characterization of Antimicrobial Poly(Lactic Acid)- and Polyurethane-Based Materials Enduring Closed-Loop Recycling with Applications in Space.

Recent studies have shown that astronauts experience altered immune response behavior during spaceflight, resulting in heightened susceptibility to illness. Resources and resupply shuttles will become scarcer with longer duration spaceflight, limiting access to potentially necessary medical treatment and facilities. Thus, there is a need for preventative health countermeasures that can exploit in situ resource utilization technologies during spaceflight, such as additive manufacturing (i.e., 3D printing). The purpose of the current study was to test and validate recyclable antimicrobial materials compatible with additive manufacturing. Antimicrobial poly(lactic acid)- and polyurethane-based materials compatible with 3D printing were assessed for antimicrobial, mechanical, and chemical characteristics before and after one closed-loop recycling cycle. Our results show high biocidal efficacy (>90%) of both poly(lactic acid) and polyurethane materials while retaining efficacy post recycling, except for recycled-state polyurethane which dropped from 98.91% to 0% efficacy post 1-year accelerated aging. Significant differences in tensile and compression characteristics were observed post recycling, although no significant changes to functional chemical groups were found. Proof-of-concept medical devices developed show the potential for the on-demand manufacturing and recyclability of typically single-use medical devices using antimicrobial materials that could serve as preventative health countermeasures for immunocompromised populations, such as astronauts during spaceflight.

Removal capacities and varying characteristics of substrates and microbial community structure in simultaneous sulfide and nitrate biological removal process

Under the background of carbon neutrality, resource and energy utilization technologies have become the focus of future research. The paper investigated the removal efficiencies and varying characteristics of substrates and microbial community structure in the simultaneous sulfide and nitrate biological removal (SSNBR) process. The results showed that the sulfide and nitrate removal loads reached 2.998 kg m−3∙d−1 and 1.011 kg m−3∙d−1 respectively when HRT was 2.4 h. The sulfide and nitrate molar ratios (S/N ratios) hardly influenced the removal efficiencies of sulfide and nitrate. However, the reaction products sulfate and nitrite concentrations in the effluent became higher as the S/N ratios decreased. Under the S/N ratio of 5:5, when the influent sulfide and nitrate concentrations were improved from 100 mg L−1 to 600 mg L−1 and from 87.5 mg L−1 to 306.25 mg L−1, respectively, the sulfide removal efficiencies were all above 99%, but the nitrate removal efficiencies reduced from 95.53% to 55.54%. Sulfide removal effect was better than nitrate. HRT had great effect on the nitrate removal efficiencies, but hardly affected the sulfide removal. When HRT was shortened from 12 h to 2.4 h, the sulfide removal efficiencies were all above 99%, while the nitrate removal efficiencies decreased from 93.14% to 77.04%. The main functional genera included Exiguobacterium, Clostridium, Bacillus, Thiobacillus and Sphingomonas, all of which had the nitrogen and sulfur removal functions.

Sustainable Regional Straw Utilization: Collaborative Approaches and Network Optimization

The SDGS repeatedly emphasizes the importance of reducing greenhouse gas emissions such as carbon dioxide. The strategic utilization of straw resources to curtail open-air burning not only epitomizes optimal resource deployment but also constitutes a significant stride in environmental preservation and sustainable development. Globally, the imperative of this challenge is increasingly recognized, prompting nations to enhance straw resource utilization technologies, devise regional management strategies, and extend requisite policy support. Regional straw utilization encapsulates a comprehensive concept involving an array of stakeholders including governments, farmers, corporations, brokers, and rural cooperatives, with each one of these uniquely contributing to a multifaceted network that is influenced by their respective resource utilization intentions. This heterogeneity, coupled with the diverse roles of these stakeholders, renders the identification of the pivotal participants and their specific functions within the intricate network. To navigate this complexity, this study employed text analysis and social network analysis, uncovering 30 robust associative rules within this domain. Our findings elucidate that the stakeholder network in regional straw resource utilization exhibits characteristics akin to the NW small-world network model. The key network entities identified include farmers, corporations, governments, and rural cooperatives. Furthermore, the study systematically categorizes the principal entities and elucidates the dynamics of this multi-stakeholder network. This research delineates four developmental models that are pertinent to regional straw resource utilization, which is a framework that is instrumental in pinpointing the accountable parties and optimizing the overarching benefits derived from these resources. The significance of this research lies not only in showcasing the potential of straw resources for environmental conservation but also in underscoring the importance of collaborative strategies and network optimization in order to achieve sustainable development goals.

Research on the Resource Treatment and Comprehensive Utilization of Carbon Containing Wastes Using Pyrolysis–Gasification Two-Stage Recycling

Carbon containing waste has a certain calorific value and utilization value due to the presence of carbon elements. However, the current treatment methods are mostly traditional landfill disposal, incineration, or expensive physical and chemical reaction methods, which clearly do not comply with the rules of the current clean and resource-saving society. In this paper, a new technology and system for carbon containing wastes is proposed, which comprehensively treats and recycles carbon containing wastes, including solid waste, wastewater, waste gas, etc., using pyrolysis–gasification two-stage-cycle technology. The calculation results indicate that the technical scheme proposed in this article is feasible and can achieve the recycling of intermediate and final products, the efficient and clean utilization of carbon containing waste, and the graded utilization of energy. The clean utilization rate of carbon containing waste can be effectively improved, the energy consumption and cost of separate treatments can be reduced, and zero waste emissions can be completely achieved by the comprehensive pyrolysis–gasification two-stage-cycle treatment and resource utilization technology, which is one of the preferred solutions for future resource-saving societies.

Effect of TiO2 on the Microstructure and Flexural Strength of Lunar Regolith Simulant

Lunar regolith is the preferred material for lunar base construction using in situ resource utilization technology. The TiO2 variations in lunar regolith collected from different locations significantly impact its suitability as a construction material. Therefore, it is crucial to investigate the effects of TiO2 on the properties of lunar regolith. This study aims to evaluate the influence of TiO2 content and sintering temperature on phase transformation, microstructure, and macroscopic properties (e.g., the shrinkage rate, mechanical properties, and relative density) of lunar regolith simulant samples (CUG-1A). The flexural strength and relative density of the sample with a TiO2 content of 6 wt% sintered at 1100 °C reached 136.66 ± 4.92 MPa and 91.06%, which were 65% and 12.28% higher than those of the sample not doped with TiO2, respectively. The experiment demonstrated that the doped TiO2 not only reacted with Fe to form pseudobrookite (Fe2TiO5) but also effectively reduced the viscosity of the glass phase during heat treatment. As the sintering temperature increased, the particles underwent a gradual melting process, leading to a higher proportion of the liquid phase. The higher liquid-phase content had a positive impact on the diffusion of mass transfer, causing the voids and gaps between particles to shrink. This shrinkage resulted in greater density and, ultimately, improved the mechanical properties of the material.

Biomass analysis of resource utilization system

This paper uses the biomass of livestock, poultry manure and straw to study the resource utilization and integration technology by division and classification. The SPSS regression analysis and integration were applied to analyze the economic benefits of the base period (2018) and the audit period (2020). The analysis gives an opportunity in rural areas to reduce chemical fertilizers, pesticides, electricity and coal cost in planting, and this paper opens a novel window for utilizing renewable energy resources and reducing carbon dioxide emissions.

Melting and Rapid Solidification of Lunar Regolith Particles Returned by Chang'E-5 Mission.

Melting and solidification of lunar regolith are pivotal for comprehending the evolutionary dynamics of lunar volcanism, geology, and impact history. Additionally, insights gained from these processes can contribute to the advancement of insitu resource utilization technologies, for instance additive manufacturing and resource extraction systems. Herein, we conduct the direct observation of the melting and rapid solidification of lunar particles returned by the Chang'E 5 mission. The melting temperature and melting sequence were obtained. Bubble generation, growth, and release were clearly observed, with a maximum bubble diameter of 5 µm, which is supposed to be according to the release of volatiles that embedded in the particles. During the solidification process, evident crystallization occurred with incremental crystal growth rate approximately of 27 nm/s. Scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy results verified that the Fe-rich mineral crystalizes first. These results would improve the understanding of the evolution of lunar volcanism, geology, and impact history.

Energy system and resource utilization in space: A state-of-the-art review

<p>Deep space exploration expands our understanding about the evolution history of solar system, while the future development heavily relies on the construction of energy systems and utilization of resources on the planet. This paper systematically reviewed the progress in the environmental control and construction technologies of space bases, extraterrestrial in situ resource utilization technology, energy systems, key technologies for planetary transportation platforms, and geological explorations. The current status, pros and cons of these technologies and systems are introduced and discussed. As an important artificial microenvironment in the space base, the environmental control and life support system (ECLSS) provides necessary resources for human. Sintering and additive manufacturing technologies demonstrate the potential to construct a space base with lunar regolith or simulants. The extraction and in situ utilization of resources on the Moon, including water ice, oxygen, and helium-3, are crucial to maintain life support for lunar exploration. Typical energy systems that can be used on the Moon include photovoltaic cell, Stirling power generation technology, closed Brayton cycle (CBC) system, Rankine cycle system, heat storage system, and integrated energy system. The CBC system has the highest thermal efficiency (39%) among them, making it suitable for late-period energy supply. The performance of various planetary rovers, the most important transportation platforms, are summarized. Through geological explorations, the resource distribution, content, and occurrence can be obtained. Perspectives on the future, promotions of environment adaptation, resource recovery, energy efficiency, and intelligence of the existing technologies are still needed to move forward on space explorations.</p>

Stormwater Runoff Control and Water Resource Utilization Technology of Central China Normal University Based on Stormwater Flood Management Modeling

In recent years, more and more prominent urban flooding problems on campus drainage system planning and design put forward higher requirements. Sudden rainfall can have multiple negative impacts on campuses, but it is also an excellent opportunity to utilize rainwater resources. At present, the peak flow rate of urban drainage system in China is still mainly calculated by the inference formula method, and the design return period of municipal drainage system is also low, which may lead to campus flooding in case of large rainstorms. In this paper, using the Stormwater Flood Management Model (SWMM) as a platform, the Central China Normal University (CCNU) was selected to simulate the summer stormwater runoff process, and three different combinations of low-impact development (LID) facilities were applied to the campus stormwater runoff control, and the control effects of the different combinations on the flood peak flow abatement were compared. The results show that the selected LID deployment scheme is better than the single facility control effect. Finally, based on the results of the study, a technical solution for rainwater collection and reuse based on sponge campus was proposed to renovate and design the campus landscape of Central China Normal University. The economic, social and environmental benefits are significant and can provide a reference for rainwater collection on other campuses.

Supercritical water gasification of waste R410A refrigerant mixture for the resource utilization: ReaxFF reactive molecular dynamic simulation and density functional theory calculation study

Harmless treatment and resource utilization of the waste HFC refrigerants have gradually become the focus of attention. As a clean waste resource utilization technology, supercritical water gasification has good potential in converting waste refrigerant into high value-added chemicals and fuels. In this study, the supercritical water gasification mechanism of R410A, and the interaction mechanism between R125 and R32, and between H2O and R410A during the gasification process are investigated by using ReaxFF reactive molecular dynamic simulation and density functional theory calculation study. The results show that the main products obtained from the supercritical water gasification of R410A are HF, H2, CO and CO2. More than 90 % of F atoms in R410A can be mineralized to form HF molecules. H2 and CO are two important syngas products during the supercritical water gasification process. Hydrogen bonds are generated between R125 and H2O molecules and between R125 and R32 molecules, which leads to the decomposition of R125 molecules more easily, and the decomposition of R32 molecules more difficult. This work provides a possible way to convert waste HFC refrigerant mixture into high value-added chemicals and syngas.

In-situ oxygen extraction from TiO2 using laser thermal vacuum metallurgy

One of the greatest challenges for long-term human activities on the Moon is the development of in-situ resource utilization (ISRU) technologies, including in-situ oxygen extraction. In this study, a novel method called laser thermal vacuum metallurgy (LTVM) was proposed for oxygen extraction from lunar regolith, specifically using TiO2 as raw material. Firstly, the theoretical feasibility of oxygen production from TiO2 was elucidated through thermodynamic calculations. Subsequently, the impact of laser power density on the decomposition behavior of TiO2 was investigated. The results demonstrate that through the augmentation of laser power density to elevate temperatures, there is a substantial enhancement observed in both the pyrolysis and vaporization processes of TiO2. Under the conditions of a laser power density of 2.48 kW/cm2, the surface temperature of TiO2 can be maintained at approximately 2175 °C. The resulting pyrolysis products consist of Ti6O11 (8.2 ± 0.5 wt %), Ti5O9 (23.7 ± 0.6 wt %), Ti4O7 (10.9 ± 0.4 wt %), and Ti3O5 (57.2 ± 0.8 wt %). Further combining with the result of gas collection, the estimated oxygen extraction rate is approximately 43.3 L per kilogram of TiO2. Therefore, LTVM holds the potential to provide a new approach for in-situ oxygen extraction from titanium-containing lunar regolith on the Moon.
