Orbital-overlap-driven hybridization in 3d-transition metal perovskite oxides LaMO3 (M = Ti-Ni) and La2CuO4

The wide tunability of strongly correlated transition metal (TM) oxides stems from their complex electronic properties and the coupled degrees of freedom. Among the perovskite oxides family, LaMO3 (M = Ti-Ni) allows an M-dependent systematic study of the electronic structure within the same-structure-family motif. While most of the studies have been focusing on the 3d TMs and oxygen sites, the role of the rare-earth site has been far less explored. In this work, we use resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) at the lanthanum N4,5 edges and density functional theory (DFT) to investigate the hybridization mechanisms in LaMO3. We link the spatial-overlap-driven hybridization to energetic-overlap-driven hybridization by comparing the RIXS chemical shifts and the DFT band widths. The scope is extended to highly covalent Ruddlesden-Popper perovskite La2CuO4 by intercalating lanthanum atoms to rock-salt layers. Our work evidences an observable contribution of localized lanthanum 5p and 4f orbitals in the band structure.

A compact approach to higher-resolution resonant inelastic x-ray scattering detection using photoelectrons

The detection of inelastically scattered soft x-rays with high energy resolution usually requires large grating spectrometers. Recently, photoelectron spectrometry for analysis of x-rays (PAX) has been rediscovered for modern spectroscopy experiments at synchrotron light sources. By converting scattered photons to electrons and using an electron energy analyser, the energy resolution for resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) becomes decoupled from the x-ray spot size and instrument length. In this work, we develop PAX towards high energy resolution using a modern photoemission spectroscopy setup studying Ba2Cu3O4Cl2 at the Cu L 3-edge. We measure a momentum transfer range of 24% of the first Brillouin zone simultaneously. Our results hint at the observation of a magnon excitation below 100 meV energy transfer and show intensity variations related to the dispersion of dd-excitations. With dedicated setups, PAX can complement the best and largest RIXS instruments, while at the same time opening new opportunities to acquire RIXS at a range of momentum transfers simultaneously and combine it with angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy in a single instrument.

Parity violation in resonant inelastic soft x-ray scattering at entangled core holes.

Resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) is a major method for investigation of electronic structure and dynamics, with applications ranging from basic atomic physics to materials science. In RIXS applied to inversion-symmetric systems, it has generally been accepted that strict parity selectivity applies in the sub-kilo-electron volt region. In contrast, we show that the parity selection rule is violated in the RIXS spectra of the free homonuclear diatomic O2 molecule. By analyzing the spectral dependence on scattering angle, we demonstrate that the violation is due to the phase difference in coherent scattering at the two atomic sites, in analogy with Young's double-slit experiment. The result also implies that the interpretation of x-ray absorption spectra for inversion symmetric molecules in this energy range must be revised.

Time-Dependent Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering of Pyrazine at the Nitrogen K-Edge: A Quantum Dynamics Approach.

We calculate resonant inelastic X-ray scattering spectra of pyrazine at the nitrogen K-edge in the time domain including wavepacket dynamics in both the valence and core-excited state manifolds. Upon resonant excitation, we observe ultrafast non-adiabatic population transfer between core-excited states within the core-hole lifetime, leading to molecular symmetry distortions. Importantly, our time-domain approach inherently contains the ability to manipulate the dynamics of this process by detuning the excitation energy, which effectively shortens the scattering duration. We also explore the impact of pulsed incident X-ray radiation, which provides a foundation for state-of-the-art time-resolved experiments with coherent pulsed light sources.

Evolution of the Magnetic Excitations in Electron-Doped La_{2-x}Ce_{x}CuO_{4}.

We investigated the high energy spin excitations in electron-doped La_{2-x}Ce_{x}CuO_{4}, a cuprate superconductor, by resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) measurements. Efforts were paid to disentangle the paramagnon signal from non-spin-flip spectral weight mixing in the RIXS spectrum at Q_{∥}=(0.6π,0) and (0.9π,0) along the (1 0) direction. Our results show that, for doping level x from 0.07 to 0.185, the variation of the paramagnon excitation energy is marginal. We discuss the implication of our results in connection with the evolution of the electron correlation strength in this system.

Spectroscopic Characterization of Mn1+ Low Oxidation State in Prussian Blue-Based Battery Anodes.

Stabilization of ions in exotic oxidation states is beneficial for the development of new materials for green energy technologies. Exotic Mn1+ was proposed to play a role in the function of sodium-based Prussian blue analogues (PBA) batteries, a highly sought-out technology for industrial energy storage. Here, we report the detailed electronic structure characterization of uncharged and charged sodium-based manganese hexacyanomanganate anodes via Mn K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), Kβ nonresonant X-ray emission (XES), and resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS). The latter allowed us to obtain site-selective XANES information about two distinct Mn centers. The obtained spectroscopic data represent the first electronic structure characterization of low-spin Mn1+ using hard X-ray RIXS and XES and allowed us to confirm its role in anode reduction. Our experimental approach can be expanded to analysis of analogues with other 3d transition metals broadening the application of exotic ionic states in materials engineering.

Fractionation of iron and titanium isotopes by ilmenite and the isotopic compositions of lunar magma ocean cumulates

Basaltic volcanism on the Moon produced low- and high-Ti mare basalt suites that are also distinct with respect to their iron, titanium, and magnesium isotopic compositions. Here, the equilibrium fractionation of Fe and Ti isotopes between ilmenite and melt was experimentally investigated in order to evaluate the role of ilmenite in generating the isotopic compositional variability among the lunar mare basalts. Ilmenite crystallization experiments were conducted using two bulk compositions: an ilmenite-saturated basaltic andesite and an ilmenite-saturated Apollo 14 black glass, and the Fe and Ti isotopic compositions of the experimental ilmenites and glass (quenched melt) were analyzed using solution MC-ICPMS after hand-picking. Additionally, Nuclear Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering (NRIXS) measurements on synthetic ilmenite were conducted and compared to previous NRIXS measurements on synthetic lunar glasses in order to derive temperature-dependent equilibrium ilmenite-melt Fe isotopic fractionations. Experimentally determined ilmenite-melt fractionations were then incorporated into a lunar magma ocean crystallization model that tracks the major element and isotopic compositional evolution of lunar magma ocean cumulates and residual liquid. There is good agreement between the Fe equilibrium isotopic fractionation measured by NRIXS and the laboratory equilibration experiments, and we find that the isotopic fractionation is sensitive to ilmenite compositional differences (0 vs. 10% Fe3+). Further, the light Ti isotopic composition of ilmenite relative to the melt (Δ49Ti=ilmenite-melt−0.09±0.03‰ at 1100∘C) is consistent with the higher coordination of Ti in ilmenite relative to melts and results of previous studies. The modeled Ti isotopic compositions for lunar magma ocean cumulates display Ti isotopic variability sufficient to explain the low- and high-Ti mare basalt sources. However, the difference in Fe isotopic composition between the low- and high-Ti mare basalts cannot be attributed solely to ilmenite fractionation. Instead, Fe isotopic fractionation by additional products of lunar magma ocean crystallization, such as clinopyroxene, is required to generate the inferred Fe and Mg isotopic variability in the lunar mantle. Alternatively, the Fe and Mg isotopic compositions of the lunar mare basalts may indicate Fe-Mg interdiffusion has occurred in the Ti-rich component of the mare basalt source regions via reaction between ilmenite cumulates and the olivine- and pyroxene-rich lunar mantle.

Understanding LiNiO2 Electronic Structure and Redox Mechanism by Raman and X-Ray Techniques

LiNiO2 (LNO) is considered a very promising and high energy density alternative to Co-containing Li-ion battery cathodes. It is also the benchmarked cathode material of the European BIGMAP project, which aim is to combine advance operando characterization, computational modelling and artificial intelligence in order to accelerate the research and development of new generation batteries.However, the material suffers from several degradation issues resulting in fading cell performance. In particular, the presence of highly reactive Ni4+ species at the electrode/electrolyte interface1, Ni dissolution from the cathode leading to the loss of active material 2, and O2 release at high voltage are the major drawbacks precluding commercial applications. A recent in situ study1 has shown that O2 release compromises the structural stability and triggers reactions with ethylene carbonate (EC), prompting CO2evolution3,4.In parallel, solid state physics community is also largely interested into LiNiO2 in the framework of a larger investigation around the electronic and atomic structure of nickelates, in particular rare-earth nickelates. This interest rises from the fact that there is still no consensus on the atomic/electronic structure of LiNiO2, while different descriptions exist in literature. Local probe techniques demonstrate the distortion of NiO6 octahedra, and there are two on-going theories for explaining the presence of this distortion: (i) Ni3+ (t2g6 eg1) Jahn-Teller (JT) distortion, (ii) 2 Ni3+ → Ni2+ + Ni4+ bond disproportionation (BD)5. Surprisingly, the local order distortion does not result in the long-range distortion, the mechanism behind this phenomenon is not completely understood.In this contribution we present a detailed study of LNO cathode material by operando Raman and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) at the Ni K-edge, ex situ X-ray emission spectroscopy (XES) and resonant Inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS). Distinguishing between JT and BD models is challenging, and therefore NaNiO2 reference is used, which is isoelectronic material to LiNiO2, and is known to feature long-range JT distortion.While XAS is widely established technique to probe local structure and transition metal oxidation state, RIXS is useful for assessing d-d transitions and bond disproportionation. Operando Raman spectroscopy is an excellent tool for studying phase transitions in Li-ion battery cathodes and is therefore complementary to the employed X-ray techniques6. It provides information on two characteristic for layered oxides crystalline phonon modes A1g and Eg, and sheds light on both short-range order and cationic/anionic redox. The penetration depth is estimated as top few hundred nanometers of around five micrometres sized secondary particle, therefore near-surface area is probed. The results show a complex behaviour of band positions and intensities during cycling (figure 1), corresponding to four phases transformations. Notably the peaks intensities increase considerably, while the widths are decreased, which is evidence of increased order upon material delithiation, and is in agreement with the Extended X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (EXAFS). Raman is also used to evaluate the contribution of anionic redox, since all the reduced oxygen species (superoxide, peroxide and molecular oxygen) have well-known Raman-active modes.To conclude, we demonstrate how a combination of multiple vibrational and X-rays based spectroscopies provides a better understanding of both LNO ground state electronic structure and redox mechanism. This increased fundamental understanding will stimulate the design of better strategies for prevention of the material degradation and improved cycle retention.

Intercalation Reaction Mechanism of Fluoride-Ions in (Ca, Sr)FeO2 Cathodes with Infinite Layer Structure for All-Solid-State Fluoride-Ion Batteries

Fluoride ion batteries, which use fluoride ions as carriers, are attracting attention as the next generation of storage batteries because of their theoretical high energy density. Conventional research has focused on metal/metal fluorides such as Cu/CuF2 as cathode materials.[1] However, these cathodes have disadvantages of the power density and cyclability due to the rapid decrease in electronic conductivity and large volume change during fluorination and defluorination. To solve these problems, cathode materials that utilize topotactic fluoride ion intercalation reactions, similar to electrode materials applied in lithium-ion secondary batteries, are being developed[2]. However, these materials have the disadvantage of relatively small capacity, compared to metal/metal fluorides.In this study, we focused on SrFeO2and Ca-doped SrFeO2 cathodes with infinite layer structure as new high-capacity intercalation cathodes, and evaluated its electrochemical properties and clarified the charge compensation mechanism.Ca1-xSrxFeO2 (x = 0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8, 1.0) was synthesized by a low-temperature reduction method using CaH2. Ca1-xSrxFeO2/La0.9Ba0.1F2.9/vapor grown carbon fiber (VGCF) was used as the composite cathode, La0.9Ba0.1F2.9 as the electrolyte and Pb/PbF2/ La0.9Ba0.1F2.9/VGCF as the composite anode to construct the electrochemical cell of the piezoelectric material. Charge-discharge measurements were carried out in the cut-off voltage range of -1.5 to 3.0 V at 140°C. X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) measurements of Fe K-edge, O K-edge, and F K-edge and resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) measurements of O K-edge were performed on the samples after charging and discharging.All the Ca1-xSrxFeO2 (x = 0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8, 1.0) cathode showed voltage plateaus around -0.5 V and 1.5 V during charging, and the maximum discharge capacity (580 mAh g-1) was obtained when x = 0.8, and the cathodes could be repeatedly charged and discharged. XAS of the Fe K-edge revealed that Fe compensated for the charge in the flat potential region around -0.5 V. XAS and RIXS measurements of the O K-edge revealed that the charge compensation was carried out by the formation of O2 molecules (oxidation of oxide ions), as which is observed in lithium-excess metal oxide on charge process[4], in the voltage plateau around 1.5 V. Using inexpensive Ca and Fe, we succeeded in developing an intercalation cathode material that significantly exceeds the capacity of conventional lithium-ion battery cathodes.

Inhibiting Oxygen Redox to Boost Ni Activity Enables Highly Stable Properties in Na0.67Ni0.33Mn0.67O2

Cation doping is a conventional and effective strategy for promoting favorable properties in layered oxides. Here, Mg and Sc were used as dopants in Na0.67Ni0.33Mn0.67O2 to significantly improve the cycling stability in the high voltage range. It was found that both dopants could successfully suppress the P2 to O2 phase transition, but induced a sloping curve as well as a short high voltage plateau above 4.0 V, respectively. We demonstrate that these different electrochemical behaviors are indicative of the suppression of oxygen redox by means of resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) measurements. Furthermore, both X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and density functional theory show that Mg doping could enhance Ni activity while simultaneously suppressing O activity. However, these results are in contrast to other Mn-based layered oxides where Mg is known to effectively trigger the oxygen redox. We address this contradiction by proposing a competing mechanism between Ni and Mg that impacts differences in oxygen activity in Na0.67MgxNi0.33-xMn0.67O2 (x≤0≤0.33). These findings will provide a new direction in understanding the effects of cation doping on the electrochemical behavior of layered oxide materials. Figure 1

Electronic structure and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering in the mixed [formula omitted]-[formula omitted] transition-metal oxides Sr[formula omitted]CuIrO[formula omitted], Sr[formula omitted]CuPtO[formula omitted], and Sr[formula omitted]ZnIrO[formula omitted

We have investigated the electronic and magnetic properties of one-dimensional Sr3CuIrO6, Sr3ZnIrO6, and Sr3CuPtO6 oxides within the density-functional theory (DFT) using the generalized gradient approximation while taking into account strong Coulomb correlations (GGA+U) in the framework of the fully relativistic spin-polarized Dirac linear muffin-tin orbital band-structure method. The strong spin–orbit coupling (SOC) in these oxides splits the t2g-type manifold into a lower jeff = 3/2 quartet and an upper jeff = 1/2 doublet. The jeff = 1/2 band is almost completely given by linear combinations of d5/2 states. The occupied jeff = 3/2 band is dominated by d3/2 states with some weight of d5/2 states. We have investigated theoretically the resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) spectra at the Ir and Pt L3 edges in Sr3CuIrO6, Sr3ZnIrO6, and Sr3CuPtO6. The experimentally measured RIXS spectrum of Sr3CuIrO6 possesses a sharp feature below 1.3 eV corresponding to transitions within the Ir t2g levels. The excitation located from 3 eV to 5 eV is due to t2g→eg transitions. The next two high energy structures appear due to d−d transitions between the charge transfer Ir 5dct states and t2g and eg states. The theoretically calculated RIXS spectra of Sr3ZnIrO6 and Sr3CuIrO6 at the Ir L3 edges are very similar due to the similarity of their energy band structures. The RIXS spectrum at the Pt L3 edge of Sr3CuPtO6 significantly differs from the corresponding spectra at the Ir L3 edge of Sr3CuIrO6 and Sr3ZnIrO6. There are not any intra-t2g transitions in Sr3CuPtO6 due to fully occupied t2g states. Besides, there are additional 5dCu→eg transitions, where the 5dCu states are derived from the tails of the Cu 3d states inside the Pt atomic spheres.

A low noise CMOS camera system for 2D resonant inelastic soft X-ray scattering

Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering (RIXS) is a powerful spectroscopic technique to study quantum properties of materials in the bulk. A novel variant of RIXS, called 2D RIXS, enables concurrent measurement of the scattered X-ray spectrum for a wide range of input energies, improving on the typically low throughput of 1D RIXS. In the soft X-ray domain, 2D RIXS demands an X-ray camera system with small pixels, large area, high quantum efficiency and low noise to limit the false detection rate in long duration exposures. We designed and implemented a 7.5 Megapixel back-illuminated CMOS detector with 5 μm pixels and high quantum efficiency in the 200–1,000 eV X-ray energy range for the QERLIN 2D RIXS spectrometer at the Advanced Light Source. The QERLIN beamline and detector are currently in commissioning. The camera noise from in-situ 3 s long dark exposures is 7e− or less and the leakage current is 6.5 × 10−3 e−/(pixel ∙ s). For individual 500 eV X-rays, the expected efficiency is greater than 75% and the false detection rate is ∼1 × 10−5 per pixel.

An Ab Initio Correction Vector Restricted Active Space Approach to the L-Edge XAS and 2p3d RIXS Spectra of Transition Metal Complexes.

We describe an ab initio approach to simulate L-edge X-ray absorption (XAS) and 2p3d resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) spectroscopies. We model the strongly correlated electronic structure within a restricted active space and employ a correction vector formulation instead of sum-over-state expressions for the spectra, thus eliminating the need to calculate a large number of intermediate and final electronic states. We present benchmark simulations of the XAS and RIXS spectra of the iron complexes [FeCl4]1-/2- and [Fe(SCH3)4]1-/2- and interpret the spectra by deconvolving the correction vectors. Our approach represents a step toward simulating the X-ray spectroscopies of larger metal cluster systems that play a pivotal role in biology.

A time-dependent momentum-resolved scattering approach to core-level spectroscopies

While new light sources allow for unprecedented resolution in experiments with X-rays, a theoretical understanding of the scattering cross-section is lacking. In the particular case of strongly correlated electron systems, numerical techniques are quite limited, since conventional approaches rely on calculating a response function (Kramers-Heisenberg formula) that is obtained from a perturbative analysis of scattering processes in the frequency domain. This requires a knowledge of a full set of eigenstates in order to account for all intermediate processes away from equilibrium, limiting the applicability to small tractable systems. In this work, we present an alternative paradigm, recasting the problem in the time domain and explicitly solving the time-dependent Schrödinger equation without the limitations of perturbation theory: a faithful simulation of the scattering processes taking place in actual experiments, including photons and core electrons. We show how this approach can yield the full time and momentum resolved Resonant Inelastic X-Ray Scattering (RIXS) spectrum of strongly interacting many-body systems. We demonstrate the formalism with an application to Mott insulating Hubbard chains using the time-dependent density matrix renormalization group method, which does not require a priory knowledge of the eigenstates and can solve very large systems with dozens of orbitals. This approach can readily be applied to systems out of equilibrium without modification and generalized to other spectroscopies.

Probing Lattice Oxygen Oxidation in Perovskite Electrocatalysts By Resonant Inelastic X-Ray Scattering

During water electrolysis, the hydrogen evolution reaction that generates hydrogen gas is unavoidably accompanied by the anodic reaction that generates oxygen via the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). However, under OER conditions, many electrocatalysts undergo structural degradation and can become amorphous. Lattice oxygen oxidation was proposed as one of the possible causes for amorphization of perovskite oxides. However, because lattice oxygen oxidation is notoriously challenging to probe in experiments, its unambiguous detection in oxide electrocatalysts has been elusive so far.Here, I will show how oxygen oxidation can be detected in single-crystalline (model) oxide electrocatalysts using high-resolution resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS). Specifically, I will present our case study of perovskite materials where the emergence of oxidized oxygen depends on the transition metal and the applied potential. An insight into the chemical environment of the oxidized oxygen and how it can be accommodated in the perovskite lattice will be provided based on the results of DFT and molecular dynamics. Finally, I will discuss how lattice oxygen oxidation is related to the degradation of oxide electrocatalysts during OER.

Low-energy quasi-circular electron correlations with charge order wavelength in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ.

Most resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) studies of dynamic charge order correlations in the cuprates have focused on the high-symmetry directions of the copper oxide plane. However, scattering along other in-plane directions should not be ignored as it may help understand, for example, the origin of charge order correlations or the isotropic scattering resulting in strange metal behavior. Our RIXS experiments reveal dynamic charge correlations over the qx-qy scattering plane in underdoped Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ. Tracking the softening of the RIXS-measured bond-stretching phonon, we show that these dynamic correlations exist at energies below approximately 70 meV and are centered around a quasi-circular manifold in the qx-qy scattering plane with radius equal to the magnitude of the charge order wave vector, qCO. This phonon-tracking procedure also allows us to rule out fluctuations of short-range directional charge order (i.e., centered around [qx = ±qCO, qy = 0] and [qx = 0, qy = ±qCO]) as the origin of the observed correlations.

Two-dimensional Kβ-Kα fluorescence spectrum by nonlinear resonant inelastic X-ray scattering

High sensitivity of the Kβ fluorescence spectrum to electronic state is widely used to investigate spin and oxidation state of first-row transition-metal compounds. However, the complex electronic structure results in overlapping spectral features, and the interpretation may be hampered by ambiguity in resolving the spectrum into components representing different electronic states. Here, we tackle this difficulty with a nonlinear resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) scheme, where we leverage sequential two-photon absorption to realize an inverse process of the Kβ emission, and measure the successive Kα emission. The nonlinear RIXS reveals two-dimensional (2D) Kβ-Kα fluorescence spectrum of copper metal, leading to better understanding of the spectral feature. We isolate 3d-related satellite peaks in the 2D spectrum, and find good agreement with our multiplet ligand field calculation. Our work not only advances the fluorescence spectroscopy, but opens the door to extend RIXS into the nonlinear regime.

Uncovering the 3d and 4d Electronic Interactions in Solvated Ru Complexes with 2p3d Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering.

The electronic structure and dynamics of ruthenium complexes are widely studied given their use in catalytic and light-harvesting materials. Here we investigate three model Ru complexes, [RuIII(NH3)6]3+, [RuII(bpy)3]2+, and [RuII(CN)6]4-, with L3-edge 2p3d resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) to probe unoccupied 4d valence orbitals and occupied 3d orbitals and to gain insight into the interactions between these levels. The 2p3d RIXS maps contain a higher level of spectral information than the L3 X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES). This study provides a direct measure of the 3d spin-orbit splittings of 4.3, 4.0, and 4.1 eV between the 3d5/2 and 3d3/2 orbitals of the [RuIII(NH3)6]3+, [RuII(bpy)3]2+, and [RuII(CN)6]4- complexes, respectively.

Momentum-resolved spin-conserving two-triplon bound state and continuum in a cuprate ladder

Studying multi-particle elementary excitations has provided unique access to understand collective many-body phenomena in correlated electronic materials, paving the way towards constructing microscopic models. In this work, we perform O K-edge resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) on the quasi-one-dimensional cuprate {{{{{{rm{Sr}}}}}}}_{14}{{{{{{rm{Cu}}}}}}}_{24}{{{{{{rm{O}}}}}}}_{41} with weakly-doped spin ladders. The RIXS signal is dominated by a dispersing sharp mode ~ 270 meV on top of a damped incoherent component ~ 400-500 meV. Comparing with model calculations using the perturbative continuous unitary transformations method, the two components resemble the spin-conserving ΔS = 0 two-triplon bound state and continuum excitations in the spin ladders. Such multi-spin response with long-lived ΔS = 0 excitons is central to several exotic magnetic properties featuring Majorana fermions, yet remains unexplored given the generally weak cross-section with other experimental techniques. By investigating a simple spin-ladder model system, our study provides valuable insight into low-dimensional quantum magnetism.

Role of La 5p in Bulk and Quantum-Confined Solids Probed by the La 5p54f1 3D1 Excitonic Final State of Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering

The varied electronic localization of rare earth elements is essential to functional materials and a key to tailoring their properties. We establish with unprecedented spectral resolution the excitonic nature of the lanthanum 5p54f1 3D1 and 3D2 final states of resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) at the La N4,5 edges. We extract the intrinsic lifetime, energy distance, and relative intensity ratio from single crystal LaAlO3 and construct an empirical model. With help of the model, we precisely determine the RIXS 3D1 final state position and identify La 5p as a descriptor of covalency with the host material. For metallic lanthanum, La3+ ions in mixed-covalent-ionic simple oxides and phosphates, and ionic salts alike, we find a sizable chemical shift, indicating band-like and free-ion-like La. The different electronic relaxation of the La 5p5 hole and the La 4f1 electron is discussed with local and nonlocal screening contributions. In addition, the energetics of the excitonic La 5p54f1 Coulomb attraction is quantified in its variation from lanthanum metal to mixed-covalent-ionic La2O3 and the ionic LaF3 salt. The power of the approach and analysis is applied to map the influence of geometric quantum confinement to La 5p sharing within quantum dots and quantum wires in comparison to bulk-like microrods of monoclinic LaPO4.
