Evolution of the Magnetic Excitations in Electron-Doped La_{2-x}Ce_{x}CuO_{4}.

We investigated the high energy spin excitations in electron-doped La_{2-x}Ce_{x}CuO_{4}, a cuprate superconductor, by resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) measurements. Efforts were paid to disentangle the paramagnon signal from non-spin-flip spectral weight mixing in the RIXS spectrum at Q_{∥}=(0.6π,0) and (0.9π,0) along the (1 0) direction. Our results show that, for doping level x from 0.07 to 0.185, the variation of the paramagnon excitation energy is marginal. We discuss the implication of our results in connection with the evolution of the electron correlation strength in this system.

Electronic excitations of α−Fe2O3 heteroepitaxial films measured by resonant inelastic x-ray scattering at the Fe L edge

Resonant Inelastic X-Ray Scattering (RIXS) spectra of hematite were measured at the Fe L3-edge for heteroepitaxial thin films which were undoped and doped with 1% Ti, Sn or Zn, in the energy loss range in excess of 1 eV to study electronic transitions. The spectra were measured for several momentum transfers (q), conducted at both low temperature (T=14K) and room temperature. While we can not rule out dispersive features possibly owing to propagating excitations, the coarse envelopes of the general spectra did not appreciably change shape with q, implying that the bulk of the observed L-edge RIXS intensity originates from (mostly) non-dispersive ligand field (LF) excitations. Summing the RIXS spectra over q and comparing the results at T=14 K to those at T=300 K, revealed pronounced temperature effects, including an intensity change and energy shift of the 1.4 eV peak, a broadband intensity increase of the 3-4 eV range, and higher energy features. The q-summed spectra and their temperature dependences are virtually identical for nearly all of the samples with different dopants, save for the temperature dependence of the Ti-doped sample's spectrum, which we attribute to being affected by a large number of free charge carriers. Comparing with magnetization measurements for different temperatures and dopings likewise did not show a clear correlation between the RIXS spectra and the magnetic ordering states. To clarify the excited states, we performed spin multiplet calculations which were in excellent agreement with the RIXS spectra over a wide energy range and provide detailed electronic descriptions of the excited states. The implications of these findings to the photoconversion efficiency of hematite photoanodes is discussed.

Quantifying the Steric Effect on Metal-Ligand Bonding in Fe Carbene Photosensitizers with Fe 2p3d Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering.

Understanding the electronic structure and chemical bonding of transition metal complexes is important for improving the function of molecular photosensitizers and catalysts. We have utilized X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) at the Fe L3 edge to investigate the electronic structure of two Fe N-heterocyclic carbene complexes with similar chemical structures but different steric effects and contrasting excited-state dynamics: [Fe(bmip)2]2+ and [Fe(btbip)2]2+, bmip = 2,6-bis(3-methyl-imidazole-1-ylidine)pyridine and btbip = 2,6-bis(3-tert-butyl-imidazole-1-ylidene)pyridine. In combination with charge transfer multiplet and ab initio calculations, we quantified how changes in Fe-carbene bond length due to steric effects modify the metal-ligand bonding, including σ/π donation and π back-donation. We find that σ donation is significantly stronger in [Fe(bmip)2]2+, whereas the π back-donation is similar in both complexes. The resulting stronger ligand field and nephelauxetic effect in [Fe(bmip)2]2+ lead to approximately 1 eV destabilization of the quintet metal-centered 5T2g excited state compared to [Fe(btbip)2]2+, providing an explanation for the absence of a photoinduced 5T2g population and a longer metal-to-ligand charge-transfer excited-state lifetime in [Fe(bmip)2]2+. This work demonstrates how combined modeling of XAS and RIXS spectra can be utilized to understand the electronic structure of transition metal complexes governed by correlated electrons and donation/back-donation interactions.

Beyond the single-site approximation modeling of electron-phonon coupling effects on resonant inelastic X-ray scattering spectra

Resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) is used increasingly for characterizing low-energy collective excitations in materials. RIXS is a powerful probe, which often requires sophisticated theoretical descriptions to interpret the data. In particular, the need for accurate theories describing the influence of electron-phonon (e-p) coupling on RIXS spectra is becoming timely, as instrument resolution improves and this energy regime is rapidly becoming accessible. To date, only rather exploratory theoretical work has been carried out for such problems. We begin to bridge this gap by proposing a versatile variational approximation for calculating RIXS spectra in weakly doped materials, for a variety of models with diverse e-p couplings. Here, we illustrate some of its potential by studying the role of electron mobility, which is completely neglected in the widely used local approximation based on Lang-Firsov theory. Assuming that the e-p coupling is of the simplest, Holstein type, we discuss the regimes where the local approximation fails, and demonstrate that its improper use may grossly underestimate the e-p coupling strength.

Resonant Inelastic X-Ray Scattering Spectra of Cuprate Superconductors Predicted by Model of Fractionalized Fermions

We theoretically analyze the intensity of the resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) based on Ansatz that the electron is fractionalized into two components. By fitting the angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) data of a cuprate high-$T_{\rm c}$ superconductor Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+\delta}$ and the accompanied machine learning results obtained before by Yamaji {\it et al.} (arXiv:1903.08060), we determine the paprameters of the two-component fermion model which describes the electron fractionalization. The RIXS spectra are predicted by using this description. We find that the intensity is enhanced in the superconducting phase relative to the normal or pseudogap phase. Since the enhancement is unusual, we propose this can be used as a critical test whether the unconventional electron fractionalization captures the essence of the cuprate superconductivity. This type of combined analyses using multiple independent spectroscopy data, with the help of theoretical and machine learning insights, regarded as {\it integrated spectroscopy} opens a new route to study difficult open issues in strongly correlated electron systems.

Resonant inelastic x-ray scattering spectra in the hyperhoneycomb iridate β−Li2IrO3 : First-principles calculations

We studied the electronic structure of the $\ensuremath{\beta}\text{\ensuremath{-}}{\mathrm{Li}}_{2}{\mathrm{IrO}}_{3}$ insulator within the density-functional theory using the generalized gradient approximation while taking into account strong Coulomb correlations in the framework of the fully relativistic spin-polarized Dirac linear muffin-tin orbital band structure method. The $\ensuremath{\beta}\text{\ensuremath{-}}{\mathrm{Li}}_{2}{\mathrm{IrO}}_{3}$ undergoes a pressure-induced structural and magnetic phase transition at ${P}_{c}\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}\ensuremath{\sim}4$ GPa with symmetry lowering to the monoclinic $C2/c$. The structural phase transition is accompanied by the formation of ${\mathrm{Ir}}_{2}$ dimers on the zigzag chains, with an Ir-Ir distance of $\ensuremath{\sim}2.66$ \AA{}, even shorter than that of metallic Ir. The strong dimerization stabilizes the bonding molecular-orbital state, leads to the collapse of the magnetism, and opens the energy gap with a concomitant electronic phase transition from a Mott insulator to band insulator. The resonant inelastic x-ray scattering spectra (RIXS) at the Ir ${L}_{3}$ edge were investigated theoretically from first principles. The calculated results are in good agreement with the experimental data. We show that the drastic reconstruction of the RIXS spectral peak at 0.7 eV associated with the structural $Fddd\ensuremath{\rightarrow}C2/c$ phase transition at ${P}_{c}$ can be related to the disappearing of the Coulomb correlations in the high-pressure $C2/c$ phase.

Vibrational resonant inelastic X-ray scattering in liquid acetic acid: a ruler for molecular chain lengths

Quenching of vibrational excitations in resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) spectra of liquid acetic acid is observed. At the oxygen core resonance associated with localized excitations at the O–H bond, the spectra lack the typical progression of vibrational excitations observed in RIXS spectra of comparable systems. We interpret this phenomenon as due to strong rehybridization of the unoccupied molecular orbitals as a result of hydrogen bonding, which however cannot be observed in x-ray absorption but only by means of RIXS. This allows us to address the molecular structure of the liquid, and to determine a lower limit for the average molecular chain length.

Disparate Exciton-Phonon Couplings for Zone-Center and Boundary Phonons in Solid-State Graphite.

The exciton-phonon coupling in highly oriented pyrolytic graphite is studied using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) spectroscopy. With ∼70 meV energy resolution, multiple low energy excitations associated with coupling to phonons can be clearly resolved in the RIXS spectra. Using resonance dependence and the closed form for RIXS cross section without considering the intermediate state mixing of phonon modes, the dimensionless coupling constant g is determined to be 5 and 0.35, corresponding to the coupling strength of 0.42 eV+/-20 meV and 0.20 eV+/-20 meV, for zone center and boundary phonons, respectively. The reduced g value for the zone-boundary phonon may be related to its double resonance nature.

Signatures of multiple charge excitations in resonant inelastic x-ray scattering spectra of metals

We study how multiple charge excitations appear in the resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) spectra of metals. The single excitations in the problem are the plasmons and electron-hole pairs, and multi-excitation processes are usually neglected. However, at small momentum transfer the multi-excitation contributions may dominate the signal and one needs to understand how to interpret the data. In particular, we demonstrate how to "decode" the total multi-excitation intensity and extract the plasmon dispersion. While our calculations are based on the random phase approximation, which does not allow to obtain quantitatively precise results in the entire region of parameters, we expect them to capture semi-qualitatively all features expected for charged Fermi-liquid states, including universal and singular properties of the RIXS spectra.

Hv2-concept breaks the photon-count limit of RIXS instrumentation.

Upon progressive refinement of energy resolution, the conventional resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) instrumentation reaches the limit where the bandwidth of incident photons becomes insufficient to deliver an acceptable photon-count rate. Here it is shown that RIXS spectra as a function of energy loss are essentially invariant to their integration over incident energies within the core-hole lifetime. This fact permits RIXS instrumentation based on the hv2-concept to utilize incident synchrotron radiation over the whole core-hole lifetime window without any compromise on the much finer energy-loss resolution, thereby breaking the photon-count limit.

LDA+DMFTapproach to resonant inelastic x-ray scattering in correlated materials

We present a computational study of $L$-edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) in correlated 3$d$ transition-metal oxides using an $ab$ $initio$ method based on local density approximation + dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT). The present method, building on Anderson impurity model with an optimized continuum bath within DMFT, is an extension of the cluster model to include unbound electron-hole pair excitations as well as material-specific charge-transfer excitations with less empirical parameters. We find a good agreement with available experimental data. The relationship between correlated bands and fluorescence-like feature in the RIXS spectra is discussed.

Observation of spin-orbit excitations and Hund's multiplets in Ca2RuO4

We use Ru $L_3$-edge (2838.5 eV) resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) to quantify the electronic structure of Ca$_2$RuO$_4$, a layered $4d$-electron compound that exhibits a correlation-driven metal-insulator transition and unconventional antiferromagnetism. We observe a series of Ru intra-ionic transitions whose energies and intensities are well described by model calculations. In particular, we find a $\rm{J}=0\rightarrow 2$ spin-orbit excitation at 320 meV, as well as Hund's-rule driven $\rm{S}=1\rightarrow 0$ spin-state transitions at 750 and 1000 meV. The energy of these three features uniquely determines the spin-orbit coupling, tetragonal crystal-field energy, and Hund's rule interaction. The parameters inferred from the RIXS spectra are in excellent agreement with the picture of excitonic magnetism that has been devised to explain the collective modes of the antiferromagnetic state. $L_3$-edge RIXS of Ru compounds and other $4d$-electron materials thus enables direct measurements of interactions parameters that are essential for realistic model calculations.

Nuclear dynamics in resonant inelastic X-ray scattering and X-ray absorption of methanol.

We report on a combined theoretical and experimental study of core-excitation spectra of gas and liquid phase methanol as obtained with the use of X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS). The electronic transitions are studied with computational methods that include strict and extended second-order algebraic diagrammatic construction [ADC(2) and ADC(2)-x], restricted active space second-order perturbation theory, and time-dependent density functional theory-providing a complete assignment of the near oxygen K-edge XAS. We show that multimode nuclear dynamics is of crucial importance for explaining the available experimental XAS and RIXS spectra. The multimode nuclear motion was considered in a recently developed "mixed representation" where dissociative states and highly excited vibrational modes are accurately treated with a time-dependent wave packet technique, while the remaining active vibrational modes are described using Franck-Condon amplitudes. Particular attention is paid to the polarization dependence of RIXS and the effects of the isotopic substitution on the RIXS profile in the case of dissociative core-excited states. Our approach predicts the splitting of the 2a″ RIXS peak to be due to an interplay between molecular and pseudo-atomic features arising in the course of transitions between dissociative core- and valence-excited states. The dynamical nature of the splitting of the 2a″ peak in RIXS of liquid methanol near pre-edge core excitation is shown. The theoretical results are in good agreement with our liquid phase measurements and gas phase experimental data available from the literature.

Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering and Nonesonant X-ray Emission Spectra from Coupled-Cluster (Damped) Response Theory

A coupled cluster protocol rooted in damped response theory is presented for computing Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering spectra of molecules in gas-phase. Working equations are reported for both linear (i.e., equation-of-motion) and nonlinear parametrizations of the coupled-cluster wave function response. A simple scheme to compute nonresonant X-ray Emission Spectra is also proposed. Illustrative results are presented for water.

Multi-spinon and antiholon excitations probed by resonant inelastic x-ray scattering on doped one-dimensional antiferromagnets

Resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) at the oxygen K-edge has recently accessed multi-spinon excitations in the one-dimensional antiferromagnet (1D-AFM) Sr2CuO3, where four-spinon excitations are resolved separately from the two-spinon continuum. This technique, therefore, provides new opportunities to study fractionalized quasiparticle excitations in doped 1D-AFMs. To this end, we carried out exact diagonalization studies of the doped t–J model and provided predictions for oxygen K-edge RIXS experiments on doped 1D-AFMs. We show that the RIXS spectra are rich, containing distinct two- and four-spinon excitations, dispersive antiholon excitations, and combinations thereof. Our results highlight how RIXS complements inelastic neutron scattering experiments by accessing additional charge and spin components of fractionalized quasiparticles.

Indirect K-edge bimagnon resonant inelastic x-ray scattering spectrum of α-FeTe

We calculate the K-edge indirect bimagnon resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) intensity spectra of the bicollinear antiferromagnetic order known to occur in the α-FeTe chalcogenide system. Utilizing linear spin wave theory for this large-S spin system we find that the bimagnon spectrum contains four scattering channels (two intraband and two interband). We find from our calculations that for suitable energy-momentum combination the RIXS spectra can exhibit a one-, two- or three- peak structure. The number of peaks provides a clue on the various bimagnon excitation processes that can be supported both in and within the acoustic and optical magnon branches of the bicollinear antiferromagnet. Unlike the RIXS response of the antiferromagnetic or the collinear antiferromagnetic spin ordering, the RIXS intensity spectrum of the bicollinear antiferromagnet does not vanish at the magnetic ordering wave vector . It is also sensitive to next-next nearest neighbor and biquadratic coupling interactions. Our predicted RIXS spectrum can be utilized to understand the role of multi-channel bimagnon spin excitations present in the α-FeTe chalcogenide.

Crossover from Collective to Incoherent Spin Excitations in Superconducting Cuprates Probed by Detuned Resonant Inelastic X-Ray Scattering.

Spin excitations in the overdoped high temperature superconductors Tl_{2}Ba_{2}CuO_{6+δ} and (Bi,Pb)_{2}(Sr,La)_{2}CuO_{6+δ} were investigated by resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) as functions of doping and detuning of the incoming photon energy above the Cu-L_{3} absorption peak. The RIXS spectra at optimal doping are dominated by a paramagnon feature with peak energy independent of photon energy, similar to prior results on underdoped cuprates. Beyond optimal doping, the RIXS data indicate a sharp crossover to a regime with a strong contribution from incoherent particle-hole excitations whose maximum shows a fluorescencelike shift upon detuning. The spectra of both compound families are closely similar, and their salient features are reproduced by exact-diagonalization calculations of the single-band Hubbard model on a finite cluster. The results are discussed in the light of recent transport experiments indicating a quantum phase transition near optimal doping.

Resonant inelastic x-ray scattering and photoemission measurement of O2: Direct evidence for dependence of Rydberg-valence mixing on vibrational states in O 1s → Rydberg states.

High-resolution resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) and low-energy photoemission spectra of oxygen molecules have been measured for investigating the electronic structure of Rydberg states in the O 1s → σ* energy region. The electronic characteristics of each Rydberg state have been successfully observed, and new assignments are made for several states. The RIXS spectra clearly show that vibrational excitation is very sensitive to the electronic characteristics because of Rydberg-valence mixing and vibronic coupling in O2. This observation constitutes direct experimental evidence that the Rydberg-valence mixing characteristic depends on the vibrational excitation near the avoided crossing of potential surfaces. We also measured the photoemission spectra of metastable oxygen atoms (O*) from O2 excited to 1s → Rydberg states. The broadening of the 4p Rydberg states of O* has been found with isotropic behavior, implying that excited oxygen molecules undergo dissociation with a lifetime of the order of 10 fs in 1s → Rydberg states.

Ground-state oxygen holes and the metal-insulator transition in the negative charge-transfer rare-earth nickelates.

The metal–insulator transition and the intriguing physical properties of rare-earth perovskite nickelates have attracted considerable attention in recent years. Nonetheless, a complete understanding of these materials remains elusive. Here we combine X-ray absorption and resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) spectroscopies to resolve important aspects of the complex electronic structure of rare-earth nickelates, taking NdNiO3 thin film as representative example. The unusual coexistence of bound and continuum excitations observed in the RIXS spectra provides strong evidence for abundant oxygen holes in the ground state of these materials. Using cluster calculations and Anderson impurity model interpretation, we show that distinct spectral signatures arise from a Ni 3d8 configuration along with holes in the oxygen 2p valence band, confirming suggestions that these materials do not obey a conventional positive charge-transfer picture, but instead exhibit a negative charge-transfer energy in line with recent models interpreting the metal–insulator transition in terms of bond disproportionation.

Probing inter- and intrachain Zhang-Rice excitons inLi2CuO2and determining their binding energy

Cuprate materials, such as those hosting high-temperature superconductivity, represent a famous class of materials where the correlations between the strongly entangled charges and spins produce complex phase diagrams. Several years ago, the Zhang-Rice singlet was proposed as a natural quasiparticle in hole-doped cuprates. The occurrence and binding energy of this quasiparticle, consisting of a pair of bound holes with antiparallel spins on the same ${\mathrm{CuO}}_{4}$ plaquette, depends on the local electronic interactions, which are fundamental quantities for understanding the physics of the cuprates. Here, we employ state-of-the-art resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) to probe the correlated physics of the ${\mathrm{CuO}}_{4}$ plaquettes in the quasi-one-dimensional chain cuprate ${\mathrm{Li}}_{2}{\mathrm{CuO}}_{2}$. By tuning the incoming photon energy to the O $K$ edge, we populate bound states related to the Zhang-Rice quasiparticles in the RIXS process. Both intra- and interchain Zhang-Rice singlets are observed and their occurrence is shown to depend on the nearest-neighbor spin-spin correlations, which are readily probed in this experiment. We also extract the binding energy of the Zhang-Rice singlet and identify the Zhang-Rice triplet excitation in the RIXS spectra.
