The Best Models of Bodipy's Electronic Excited State: Comparing Predictions from Various DFT Functionals with Measurements from Femtosecond Stimulated Raman Spectroscopy.

Density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TD-DFT) are pivotal approaches for modeling electronically excited states of molecules. However, choosing a DFT exchange-correlation functional (XCF) among the myriad of alternatives is an overwhelming task that can affect the interpretation of results and lead to erroneous conclusions. The performance of these XCFs to describe the excited-state properties is often addressed by comparing them with high-level wave function methods or experimentally available vertical excitation energies; however, this is a limited analysis that relies on evaluation of a single point in the excited-state potential energy surface (PES). Different strategies have been proposed but are limited by the difficulty of experimentally accessing the electronic excited-state properties. In this work, we have tested the performance of 12 different XCFs and TD-DFT to describe the excited-state potential energy surface of Bodipy (2,6-diethyl-1,3,5,7-tetramethyl-8-phenyldipyrromethene difluoroborate). We compare those results with resonance Raman spectra collected by using femtosecond stimulated Raman spectroscopy (FSRS). By simultaneously fitting the absorption spectrum, fluorescence spectrum, and all of the resonance Raman excitation profiles within the independent mode displaced harmonic oscillator (IMDHO) formalism, we can describe the PES at the Franck-Condon (FC) region and determine the solvent and intramolecular reorganization energy after relaxation. This allows a direct comparison of the TD-DFT output with experimental observables. Our analysis reveals that using vertical absorption energies might not be a good criterion to determine the best XCF for a given molecular system and that FSRS opens up a new way to benchmark the excited-state performance of XCFs of fluorescent dyes.

Chiral electronic excitations in the quasi-two-dimensional Rashba system BiTeI

The optical transitions between spin-polarized bands of the quasi-two dimensional Rashba system BiTeI are investigated using polarization resolved resonant Raman spectroscopy. We detect chiral excitations between states with opposite helicity and compare spectra to calculations within a three-band model. Using the resonant Raman excitation profile, we deduce the Rashba parameters and band gaps of the higher conduction bands near the Fermi level, and compare the parameters to values obtained by ab initio density function theory (DFT).

Resonance Raman Excitation Profiles of Fe(II)-Terpyridine Complexes: Electronic Effects of Ligand Modifications.

Metal 2,2':6',2″-terpyridine (tpy) complexes are readily used as building blocks in metallo-supramolecular polymers that stand out for their photophysical properties in solar energy assemblies. Furthermore, Resonance Raman (RR) excitation profiles are sensitive indicators of the electronic properties of chromophores. Previously, using RR spectroscopy, we studied the [Fe(tpy)2]2+ complex and metallo-supramolecular polymers formed by tpy derivatives and Fe(II) ions. Here, we compare RR spectra of iron (Fe(II)) complexes with 4'-substituted tpy ligands─[Fe(4'-R-tpy)2]2+, with R = H (1a), Cl (2a), 4-chlorophenyl (3a), and 2-thienyl (4a) to describe changes in their electronic structure after functionalization. By combining theoretical calculations, RR, and UV/vis spectra, we elucidated differences in the RR excitation profiles of 1a, 2a, and 4a complexes. In all Raman modes, complexes 1a and 2a showed maximal enhancement only at 532 nm excitation, whereas complex 4a exhibited maximal enhancement selectively at either 532 or 633 nm excitations. Based on our calculations, the mixed metal/ligand character of the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) of 4a complex manifests itself through selective enhancement of vibration modes, mainly localized on the 2-thienyl unit at 633 nm excitation, which may explain the unique behavior of this complex. Therefore, complex 4a is a prospective candidate for further detailed photophysical explorations toward developing sensitizers for solar cells.

Atomic Force Microscopy Nanomanipulation by Confocal Raman Multiwavelength Spectroscopy: Application at the Monitoring of Resonance Profile Excitation Changes of Manipulated Carbon Nanotube

This paper explores the possibilities offered by coupling AFM nano-manipulation with Resonance Raman Excitation Profile approaches. We apply this method to nanostructures produced by AFM nano-manipulation. The experimental demonstration is made on the interaction between two single-wall carbon nanotubes, one semiconducting and the other metallic. The measurement is analyzed and discussed in terms of resonance shifts and broadening of the electronic transition.

Direct Observation of Symmetry-Dependent Electron-Phonon Coupling in Black Phosphorus.

Electron-phonon coupling in two-dimensional nanomaterials plays a fundamental role in determining their physical properties. Such interplay is particularly intriguing in semiconducting black phosphorus (BP) due to the highly anisotropic nature of its electronic structure and phonon dispersions. Here we report the direct observation of symmetry-dependent electron-phonon coupling in BP by performing the polarization-selective resonance Raman measurement in the visible and ultraviolet regimes, focusing on the out-of-plane Ag1 and in-plane Ag2 phonon modes. Their intrinsic resonance Raman excitation profiles (REPs) were extracted and quantitatively compared. The in-plane Ag2 mode exhibits remarkably strong resonance enhancement across the excitation wavelengths when the excitation polarization is parallel to the armchair (Ag2//AC) direction. In contrast, a dramatically weak resonance effect was observed for the same mode with the polarization parallel to zigzag (Ag2//ZZ) direction and for the out-of-plane Ag1 mode (Ag1//AC and Ag1//ZZ). Analysis on quantum perturbation theory and first-principles calculations on the anisotropic electron distributions in BP demonstrated that electron-phonon coupling considering the symmetry of the involved excited states and phonon vibration patterns is responsible for this phenomenon. Further analysis of the polarization-dependent REPs for Ag phonons allows us to resolve the existing controversies on the physical origin of Raman anomaly in BP and its dependence on excitation energy, sample thickness, phonon modes, and crystalline orientation. Our study gives deep insights into the underlying interplay between electrons and phonons in BP and paves the way for manipulating the electron-phonon coupling in anisotropic nanomaterials for future device applications.

Initial Excited-State Structural Dynamics of dT and dA Oligonucleotide Homopentamers Using Resonance Raman Spectroscopy.

Photochemical damage of DNA is initiated by absorption of ultraviolet light, and the photoproducts are formed as a result of excited-state structural and electronic dynamics. We have used UV resonance Raman spectroscopy to measure the initial excited-state structural dynamics of homopentamers of adenosine monophosphate (3'-dApdApdApdApdAp-5') and thymidine monophosphate (3'-dTpdTpdTpdTpdTp-5') and compare them to those of the monomeric nucleobases. The resonance Raman spectra of the homopentamers are similar to those of the corresponding monomers. Initial excited-state slopes, homogeneous and inhomogeneous broadening, and other excited-state parameters were extracted by self-consistent simulation of the resonance Raman excitation profiles and absorption spectra with a time-dependent formalism and are also similar to the initial excited-state slopes and broadening in the nucleotide monomers. The lack of differences between the initial excited-state structural dynamics of the nucleotides within the pentamer and the isolated nucleobases is consistent with a model in which the formation of photochemical products in oligonucleotides and DNA is dependent on the formation of the transition-state structure within these polymers, dictated by their large-scale dynamics. These results are discussed in light of the known photochemistry of DNA and the nucleobases.

UNRAVELING THE SOLVATOCHROMISM OF A TRIARYLMETHANE DYE BY RESONANCE RAMAN SPECTROSCOPY

The effect of the solvent on the electronic properties of the triarylmethane dye rosolic acid (RA) is investigated by means of UV-VIS and resonance Raman (RR) spectroscopies. The comparison of the solvatochromic behavior of both neutral and dianionic species of RA in acetonitrile, dimethylsulfoxide, and methanol illustrates the effect of polarity and hydrogen bonding on their electronic transitions. The resonance Raman analysis revealed two distinct chromophores in both neutral and dianionic species: i) one located at the central carbon atom, acting as an electron acceptor, and ii) the other involving the π-system of the donor groups. The observed resonance Raman excitation profiles are solvent dependent and could be interpreted as the effect of the solvent on the planarity of the aromatic rings in relation to the central carbon atom. In the case of neutral RA species, having C2 symmetry, specific hydrogen bonding interactions are responsible for inducing a symmetry increase. The opposite effect was observed for the dianionic species [RA]2-, having D3 propeller symmetry, where the interactions with the solvent induces a lowering of the symmetry.

Efficient calculation of (resonance) Raman spectra and excitation profiles with real-time propagation.

We investigate approaches for the calculation of (resonance) Raman spectra in a real-time time-dependent density functional theory (RT-TDDFT) framework. Several short time approximations to the Kramers, Heisenberg, and Dirac polarizability tensor are examined with regard to the calculation of resonance Raman spectra: One relies on a Placzek type expansion of the electronic polarizability and the other one relies on the excited state gradient method. The first one is shown to be in agreement with an approach based on perturbation theory in the case of a weak δ-pulse perturbation. The latter is newly applied in a real time propagation framework, enabled by the use of Padé approximants to the Fourier transform which allow for a sufficient resolution in the frequency domain. An analysis of the performance of Padé approximants is given. All approaches were found to be in good agreement for uracil and R-methyloxirane. Moreover it is shown how RT-TDDFT can be used to calculate Raman excitation profiles efficiently.

Initial excited‐state structural dynamics of uridine from resonance Raman spectroscopy

AbstractThe effect of the N1 ribose sugar on the initial excited‐state structural dynamics of uridine is explored with ultraviolet resonance Raman spectroscopy. Excited‐state slopes and broadening parameters were obtained by simulating the resonance Raman excitation profiles and absorption spectrum using a self‐consistent, time‐dependent formalism. The initial excited‐state structural dynamics of uridine look similar to those of uracil, in terms of the distribution of percentage of reorganization energy along different modes, but there is an overall decrease in the excited‐state slopes along most of the modes in uridine compared with uracil. Only about 30% of the total initial reorganization energy in both uracil and uridine are oriented along the photochemically reactive coordinates. The results are also similar to those of thymine and thymidine, upon attachment of the sugar. These differences between thymine, thymidine, uracil and uridine are examined, and the possible effect on the resulting differences in photochemistry is discussed.

Resonance Raman excitation profiles of CdS in pure CdS and CdSe/CdS core/shell quantum dots: CdS-localized excitons.

Resonance Raman excitation profiles have been measured for the longitudinal optical phonon in two sizes of CdS quantum dots and in CdSe/CdS core/shell quantum dots. In pure CdS, the resonance Raman cross section for the fundamental transition is sharply peaked around the lowest-energy excitonic transition and becomes weaker with higher-energy excitation even though the absorbance continues to increase to higher energies. This effect, also observed in earlier studies of CdSe quantum dots, is attributed largely to interferences among multiple excitonic transitions contributing to the resonance Raman polarizability. No variation in exciton-phonon coupling strength with exciton energy is required to explain the decrease in the ratio of the Raman cross section to absorption cross section at shorter wavelengths. In core/shell structures, the CdSe phonons are relatively strong when exciting on resonance with the lower excitonic transitions, in which the hole is largely localized to the CdSe core, but become nearly undetectable at excitation wavelengths >0.6 eV above the lowest exciton, where both electrons and holes are largely localized in the CdS shell. The CdS phonon Raman cross section exhibits a maximum 0.6-0.7 eV above the lowest exciton and then decreases at higher energies for the same reasons as in pure CdS.

Resonance Raman Intensities Demonstrate that C5 Substituents Affect the Initial Excited-State Structural Dynamics of Uracil More than C6 Substituents.

Resonance Raman derived initial excited-state structural dynamics provide insight into the photochemical mechanisms of pyrimidine nucleobases, in which the photochemistry appears to be dictated by the C5 and C6 substituents. The absorption and resonance Raman spectra and excitation profiles of 5,6-dideuterouracil were measured to further test this photochemical dependence on the C5 and C6 substituents. The resulting set of excited-state reorganization energies of the observed internal coordinates were calculated and compared to those of other 5- and 6-substituted uracils. The results show that the initial excited-state dynamics along the C5C6 stretch responds to changes in mass at C5 and C6 in the same manner but that the in-plane bends at C5 and C6 are more sensitive to substituents at the C5 position than at the C6 position. In addition, the presence of two deuterium substituents at C5 and C6 decreases the initial excited-state structural dynamics along these in-plane bends, in contrast to what is observed in the presence of two CH3 groups on C5 and C6. The results are discussed in the context of DNA nucleobase photochemistry.

Electron–Phonon Coupling in CdSe/CdS Core/Shell Quantum Dots

Resonance Raman spectra and excitation profiles have been measured and semiquantitatively modeled for core/shell quantum dots consisting of 2.7 nm diameter zincblende CdSe cores and thin (0.5 nm) or thick (1.6 nm) CdS shells. The Raman spectra show previously reported trends of increased peak frequency for both the CdSe and the CdS longitudinal optical (LO) phonons with increasing shell thickness. We also find a strong dependence of the peak CdS frequency on excitation energy and a large discrepancy between the experimental frequency of the CdSe + CdS combination band and the sum of the corresponding fundamental frequencies. This suggests that the dominant transitions at high excitation energies are localized on either the CdSe core or the CdS shell and thereby cannot enhance combination band transitions between core and shell. The CdS to CdSe Raman intensity ratios at high excitation energies further support this picture. The electron-phonon coupling for the CdSe LO phonon in the lowest excitonic transition is slightly weaker in the core/shell structures than in pure CdSe quantum dots, contrary to expectations for the Fröhlich coupling mechanism. Possible explanations for this discrepancy are discussed.

Effect of curve crossing induced dissociation on absorption and resonance Raman spectra: An analytically solvable model

An analytically solvable model for the crossing of a harmonic and a Morse potential coupled by Dirac Delta function has been proposed. Further we explore the electronic absorption spectra and resonance Raman excitation profile using this model and found that curve crossing had significant effect on the resonance Raman excitation profile.

Size-Dependent Exciton–Phonon Coupling in CdSe Nanocrystals through Resonance Raman Excitation Profile Analysis

Resonance Raman excitation profiles, including absolute Raman cross sections, have been measured for the optical phonons of organic ligand capped spherical CdSe nanocrystals with average diameters ranging from 2.6 to 5.2 nm. The absorption spectra, fundamental excitation profiles, overtone to fundamental intensity ratios, and depolarization ratio dispersion profiles are simulated using a model for the exciton–phonon coupling strengths in the various excitonic transitions that contribute to the resonance enhancement. The resonance Raman cross sections increase strongly with nanocrystal size as expected from the increased transition dipole moments (oscillator strengths) in the larger particles. However, the exciton–phonon coupling strengths, particularly for the lowest energy excitonic transition (1Se–1S3/2), are relatively independent of nanocrystal size over this range, perhaps decreasing slightly with increasing size. This result is consistent with calculations of exciton–phonon coupling using an atomistic model for the phonon modes and an effective mass approximation-envelope function model for the excitonic states if the electron and hole effective masses are adjusted to fit the experimental excitonic transition energies.

Initial excited-state structural dynamics of 6-substituted uracil derivatives: femtosecond angle and bond lengthening dynamics in pyrimidine nucleobase photochemistry.

Substituents on the pyrimidine ring of nucleobases appear to play a major role in determining their initial excited-state structural dynamics and resulting photochemistry. To better understand the determinants of nucleobase initial excited-state structural dynamics, we have measured the absorption and resonance Raman excitation profiles of 6-deuterouracil (6-d-U) and 6-methyluracil (6-MeU). Simulation of the resonance Raman excitation profiles and absorption spectrum with a self-consistent, time-dependent formalism shows the effect of the deuterium and methyl group on the photochemically active internal coordinates, i.e. C5C6 stretch and C5X and C6X bends. The methyl group on either the C5 or C6 position of uracil equally increases the excited-state reorganization energies along the C5C6 stretch. However, a lower reorganization energy of the C5X + C6X bends in 6-MeU than uracil and 5-MeU shows that C6 methyl substituents reduce the bending reorganization energy. In addition, deuterium substitution at either C5 or C6 has a much smaller effect on the initial excited-state structural dynamics than methyl substitution, consistent with a mass effect. These results will be discussed in light of the resulting photochemistry of pyrimidine nucleobases.

State-by-State Investigation of Destructive Interference in Resonance Raman Spectra of Neutral Tyrosine and the Tyrosinate Anion with the Simplified Sum-over-States Approach

UV resonance Raman scattering is uniquely sensitive to the molecular electronic structure as well as intermolecular interactions. To better understand the relationship between electronic structure and resonance Raman cross section, we carried out combined experimental and theoretical studies of neutral tyrosine and the tyrosinate anion. We studied the Raman cross sections of four vibrational modes as a function of excitation wavelength, and we analyzed them in terms of the contributions of the individual electronic states as well as of the Albrecht A and B terms. Our model, which is based on time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT), reproduced the experimental resonance Raman spectra and Raman excitation profiles for both studied molecules with good agreement. We found that for the studied modes, the contributions of Albrecht's B terms in the Raman cross sections were important across the frequency range spanning the L(a,b) and B(a,b) electronic excitations in tyrosine and the tyrosinate anion. Furthermore, we demonstrated that interference with high-energy states had a significant impact and could not be neglected even when in resonance with a lower-energy state. The symmetry of the vibrational modes served as an indicator of the dominance of the A or B mechanisms. Excitation profiles calculated with a damping constant estimated from line widths of the electronic absorption bands had the best consistency with experimental results.

Resonance Raman Analysis of the Tryptophan Cation Radical.

Electron transfer (ET) reactions within proteins are accomplished by a broad set of redox-active molecules, including natural amino acids. Tryptophan participates in ET chemistry as both a cation and a neutral radical. Identification and characterization of the biologically relevant species is essential to understand efficient ET mechanisms in proteins. We present resonance Raman spectra and excitation profiles of the tryptophan cation radical generated by combining a strong oxidant, Ce(IV), with tryptophan model compounds in a fast-flow mixing device. Isotopically modified derivatives, coupled with calculations, allowed the assignment of the normal modes of this radical. Raman bands that are sensitive to protonation state and hydrogen bonding environment of the cation radical were identified. The present findings, along with resonance Raman spectra of the closed-shell and neutral radical counterparts, form a foundation for probing tryptophan-mediated ET reactions in proteins.

Initial excited-state structural dynamics of 5,6-dimethyluracil from resonance Raman spectroscopy.

In order to understand the effect of methyl substitution patterns on the initial excited-state structural dynamics of uracil derivatives, we measured the resonance Raman spectra of 5,6-dimethyluracil (5,6-DMU). The results show that the resonance Raman spectrum is a combination of that of 5-methyl- and 6-methyluracil. The resonance Raman excitation profiles (RREPs) and absorption spectrum are simulated with a self-consistent, time-dependent formalism to yield the excited-state slopes and broadening parameters. The initial excited-state structural dynamics occur primarily along the C5═C6 stretching mode, as expected, but with lesser excited-state slopes along each mode compared to 5-methyluracil and 6-methyluracil. This study along with previous experiments with different uracil derivatives show that the presence and positions of the methyl groups seems to determine the partitioning of initial excited-state structural dynamics.

Intraligand Charge-Transfer Excited States in Re(I) Complexes with Donor-Substituted Dipyridophenazine Ligands

The donor-acceptor ligands 11-(4-diphenylaminophenyl)dipyrido[3,2-a:2',3'-c]phenazine (dppz-PhNPh2) and 11-(4-dimethylaminophenyl)dipyrido[3,2-a:2',3'-c]phenazine (dppz-PhNMe2), and their rhenium complexes, [Re(CO)3X] (X = Cl(-), py, 4-dimethylaminopyridine (dmap)), are reported. Crystal structures of the two ligands were obtained. The optical properties of the ligands and complexes are dominated by intraligand charge transfer (ILCT) transitions from the amine to the dppz moieties with λabs = 463 nm (ε = 13 100 M(-1) cm(-1)) for dppz-PhNMe2 and with λabs = 457 nm (ε = 16 900 M(-1) cm(-1)) for dppz-PhNPh2. This assignment is supported by CAM-B3LYP TD-DFT calculations. These ligands are strongly emissive in organic solvents and, consistent with the ILCT character, show strong solvatochromic behavior. Lippert-Mataga plots of the data are linear and yield Δμ values of 22 D for dppz-PhNPh2 and 20 D for dppz-PhNMe2. The rhenium(I) complexes are less emissive, and it is possible to measure resonance Raman spectra. These data show relative band intensities that are virtually unchanged from λexc = 351 to 532 nm, consistent with a single dominant transition in the visible region. Resonance Raman excitation profiles are solvent sensitive; these data are modeled using wavepacket theory yielding reorganization energies ranging from 1800 cm(-1) in toluene to 6900 cm(-1) in CH3CN. The excited state electronic absorption and infrared spectroscopy reveal the presence of dark excited states with nanosecond to microsecond lifetimes that are sensitive to the ancillary ligand on the rhenium. These dark states were assigned as phenazine-based (3)ILCT states by time-resolved infrared spectroscopy. Time-resolved infrared spectroscopy shows transient features in which Δν(CO) is approximately -7 cm(-1), consistent with a ligand-centered excited state. Evidence for two such states is seen in mid-infrared transient spectra.

Resonance Raman and photoluminescence excitation profiles and excited-state dynamics in CdSe nanocrystals

Resonance Raman excitation profiles for the longitudinal optical (LO) phonon fundamental and its first overtone have been measured for organic ligand capped, wurtzite form CdSe nanocrystals of ∼3.2 nm diameter dissolved in chloroform. The absolute differential Raman cross-section for the fundamental is much larger when excited at 532 or 543 nm, on the high-frequency side of the lowest-wavelength absorption maximum, than for excitation in the 458-476 nm range although the absorbance is higher at the shorter wavelengths. That is, the quantum yield for resonance Raman scattering is reduced for higher-energy excitation. In contrast, the photoluminescence quantum yield is relatively constant with wavelength. The optical absorption spectrum and the resonance Raman excitation profiles and depolarization dispersion curves are reproduced with a model for the energies, oscillator strengths, electron-phonon couplings, and dephasing rates of the multiple low-lying electronic excitations. The Huang-Rhys factor for LO phonon in the lowest excitonic transition is found to lie in the range S = 0.04-0.14. The strong, broad absorption feature about 0.5 eV above the lowest excitonic peak, typically labeled as the 1P3∕21Pe transition, is shown to consist of at least two significant components that vary greatly in the magnitude of their electron-phonon coupling.
