Radiatively cooled magnetic reconnection experiments driven by pulsed power

We present evidence for strong radiative cooling in a pulsed-power-driven magnetic reconnection experiment. Two aluminum exploding wire arrays, driven by a 20 MA peak current, 300 ns rise time pulse from the Z machine (Sandia National Laboratories), generate strongly driven plasma flows (MA≈7) with anti-parallel magnetic fields, which form a reconnection layer (SL≈120) at the mid-plane. The net cooling rate far exceeds the Alfvénic transit rate (τcool−1/τA−1≫1), leading to strong cooling of the reconnection layer. We determine the advected magnetic field and flow velocity using inductive probes positioned in the inflow to the layer, and inflow ion density and temperature from analysis of visible emission spectroscopy. A sharp decrease in x-ray emission from the reconnection layer, measured using filtered diodes and time-gated x-ray imaging, provides evidence for strong cooling of the reconnection layer after its initial formation. X-ray images also show localized hotspots, regions of strong x-ray emission, with velocities comparable to the expected outflow velocity from the reconnection layer. These hotspots are consistent with plasmoids observed in 3D radiative resistive magnetohydrodynamic simulations of the experiment. X-ray spectroscopy further indicates that the hotspots have a temperature (170 eV) much higher than the bulk layer (≤75 eV) and inflow temperatures (about 2 eV) and that these hotspots generate the majority of the high-energy (>1 keV) emission.

Plasmoid Formation and Strong Radiative Cooling in a Driven Magnetic Reconnection Experiment.

We present the first experimental study of plasmoid formation in a magnetic reconnection layer undergoing rapid radiative cooling, a regime relevant to extreme astrophysical plasmas. Two exploding aluminum wire arrays, driven by the Z machine, generate a reconnection layer (S_{L}≈120) in which the cooling rate far exceeds the hydrodynamic transit rate (τ_{hydro}/τ_{cool}>100). The reconnection layer generates a transient burst of >1 keV x-ray emission, consistent with the formation and subsequent rapid cooling of the layer. Time-gated x-ray images show fast-moving (up to 50 km s^{-1}) hotspots in the layer, consistent with the presence of plasmoids in 3D resistive magnetohydrodynamic simulations. X-ray spectroscopy shows that these hotspots generate the majority of Al K-shell emission (around 1.6keV) prior to the onset of cooling, and exhibit temperatures (170eV) much greater than that of the plasma inflows and the rest of the reconnection layer, thus providing insight into the generation of high-energy radiation in radiatively cooled reconnection events.

Coronal Heating and Solar Wind Generation by Flux Cancellation Reconnection

In this paper, we propose that flux cancellation on small granular scales (≲1000 km) ubiquitously drives reconnection at a multitude of sites in the low solar atmosphere, contributing to chromospheric/coronal heating and the generation of the solar wind. We analyze the energy conversion in these small-scale flux cancellation events using both analytical models and three-dimensional, resistive magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations. The analytical models—in combination with the latest estimates of flux cancellation rates—allow us to estimate the energy release rates due to cancellation events, which are found to be on the order 106–107 erg cm−2 s−1, sufficient to heat the chromosphere and corona of the quiet Sun and active regions, and to power the solar wind. The MHD simulations confirm the conversion of energy in reconnecting current sheets, in a geometry representing a small-scale bipole being advected toward an intergranular lane. A ribbon-like jet of heated plasma that is accelerated upward could also escape the Sun as the solar wind in an open-field configuration. We conclude that through two phases of atmospheric energy release—precancellation and cancellation—the cancellation of photospheric magnetic flux fragments and the associated magnetic reconnection may provide a substantial energy and mass flux contribution to coronal heating and solar wind generation.

Magnetically threaded accretion disks in resistive magnetohydrodynamic simulations and asymptotic expansion

Aims. A realistic model of magnetic linkage between a central object and its accretion disk is a prerequisite for understanding the spin history of stars and stellar remnants. To this end, we aim to provide an analytic model in agreement with magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations. Methods. For the first time, we wrote a full set of stationary asymptotic expansion equations of a thin magnetic accretion disk, including the induction and energy equations. We also performed a resistive MHD simulation of an accretion disk around a star endowed with a magnetic dipole, using the publicly available code PLUTO. We compared the analytical results with the numerical solutions, and discussed the results in the context of previous solutions of the induction equation describing the star-disk magnetospheric interaction. Results. We found that the magnetic field threading the disk is suppressed by orders of magnitude inside thin disks, so the presence of the stellar magnetic field does not strongly affect the velocity field, nor the density profile inside the disk. Density and velocity fields found in the MHD simulations match the radial and vertical profiles of the analytic solution. Qualitatively, the MHD simulations result in an internal magnetic field similar to the solutions previously obtained by solving the induction equation in the disk alone. However, the magnetic field configuration is quantitatively affected by magnetic field inflation outside the disk; this is reflected in the net torque. The torque on the star is an order of magnitude larger in the magnetic than in the non-magnetic case. Spin-up of the star occurs on a timescale comparable to the accretion timescale in the MHD case, and is an order of magnitude slower in the absence of a stellar magnetic field.

3D coupled tearing-thermal evolution in solar current sheets

Context.The tearing instability plays a major role in the disruption of current sheets, whereas thermal modes can be responsible for condensation phenomena (forming prominences and coronal rain) in the solar atmosphere. However, how current sheets made unstable by combined tearing and thermal instability evolve within the solar atmosphere has received limited attention to date.Aims.We numerically explore a combined tearing and thermal instability that causes the break up of an idealized current sheet in the solar atmosphere. The thermal component leads to the formation of localized, cool condensations within an otherwise 3D reconnecting magnetic topology.Methods.We constructed a 3D resistive magnetohydrodynamic simulation of a force-free current sheet under solar atmospheric conditions that incorporates the non-adiabatic influence of background heating, optically thin radiative energy loss, and magnetic-field-aligned thermal conduction with the open source codeMPI-AMRVAC. Multiple levels of adaptive mesh refinement reveal the self-consistent development of finer-scale condensation structures within the evolving system.Results.The instability in the current sheet is triggered by magnetic field perturbations concentrated around the current sheet plane, and subsequent tearing modes develop. This in turn drives thermal runaway associated with the thermal instability of the system. We find subsequent, localized cool plasma condensations that form under the prevailing low plasma-βconditions, and demonstrate that the density and temperature of these condensed structures are similar to more quiescent coronal condensations. Synthetic counterparts at extreme ultraviolet (EUV) and optical wavelengths show the formation of plasmoids (in EUV) and coronal condensations similar to prominences and coronal rain blobs in the vicinity of the reconnecting sheet.Conclusions.Our simulations imply that 3D reconnection in solar current sheets may well present an almost unavoidable multi-thermal aspect that forms during their coupled tearing-thermal evolution.

Vorticity and magnetic dynamo from subsonic expansion waves

Context. The main driving forces supplying energy to the interstellar medium (ISM) are supernova explosions and stellar winds. Such localized sources are assimilable to curl-free velocity fields as a first approximation. They need to be combined with other physical processes to replicate real galactic environments, such as the presence of turbulence and a dynamo-sustained magnetic field in the ISM. Aims. This work is focused on the effect of an irrotational forcing on a magnetized flow in the presence of rotation, baroclinicity, shear, or a combination of any of the three. It follows an earlier analysis with a similar focus, namely, subsonic spherical expansion waves in hydrodynamic simulations. By including magnetic field in the model, we can evaluate the occurrence of dynamo on both small and large scales. We aim to identify the minimum ingredients needed to trigger a dynamo instability as well as the relation between dynamo and the growth of vorticity. Methods. We used the Pencil code to run resistive magnetohydrodynamic direct numerical simulations, exploring the ranges of values of several physical and numerical parameters of interest. We explored Reynolds numbers up to a few hundreds. We analyzed the temporal evolution of vorticity, kinetic, and magnetic energy, as well as their features in Fourier space. Results. We report the absence of a small-scale dynamo in all cases where only rotation is included, regardless of the given equation of state and rotation rate. Conversely, the inclusion of a background sinusoidal shearing profile leads to an hydrodynamic instability that produces an exponential growth of the vorticity at all scales, starting from small ones. This is know as vorticity dynamo. The onset of this instability occurs after a rather long temporal evolution of several thousand turbulent turnover times. The vorticity dynamo in turn drives an exponential growth of the magnetic field, first at small scales, followed by large ones. The instability is then saturated and the magnetic field approximately reaches equipartition with the turbulent kinetic energy. During the saturation phase, we can observe a winding of the magnetic field in the direction of the shearing flow. By varying the intensity of the shear, we see that the growth rates of this instability change. The inclusion of the baroclinic term has the main effect of delaying the onset of the vorticity dynamo, but then leads to a more rapid growth. Conclusions. Our work demonstrates how even purely irrotational forcing may lead to dynamo action in the presence of shear, thus amplifying the field to an equipartition level. At the same time, we confirm that purely irrotational forcing alone does not lead to any growth in terms of the vorticity, nor the magnetic field. This picture does not change in the presence of rotation or baroclinicity, at least up to a resolution of 2563 mesh points. To further generalize such a conclusion, we will need to explore how this setup works both at higher magnetic Reynolds numbers and with different prescriptions of the irrotational forcing.

Effect of surface roughness on phase transition timing in megaampere pulsed-power–driven exploding conductors

An understanding of material phase transitions in megaampere pulsed-power–driven exploding conductors is important for predicting the growth of hydrodynamic instabilities in magneto-inertial fusion concepts. This study analyzes phase transitions in electrical conductor explosions using 1D Lagrangian and 2D arbitrary Lagrangian–Eulerian resistive magnetohydrodynamic simulations to show that micrometer-scale surface roughness can lead to the electrothermal instability (ETI), a feedback effect that concentrates resistive heating and leads to early melting and ablation. Simulations of the Mykonos electrothermal instability II (METI-II) experiment show melting begins 19% sooner for machined rods with micrometer-scale surface roughness than for rods without these features. The surface magnetic field is 41 T around the initial region of melt, representing a lower magnitude than both the 86 T from 1D simulations and the 85 T threshold reported elsewhere. In 2D simulations with micrometer-scale surface roughness, temperature measurements indicate the critical point temperature of aluminum is reached 17% faster in comparison with 1D simulations. Values from 2D simulations with surface roughness align with predictions from ETI theory, and the observed temperature redistribution further supports the ETI as an underlying mechanism. Simulation results are validated against experimental photonic Doppler velocimetry data. This study shows 1D simulations are adequate to model conductors with sub-micrometer-scale surface roughness in this high-energy-density regime; however, 2D or 3D simulations are required to capture the full range of physics for accurately describing phase transitions in conductors with micrometer-scale or larger surface roughness.

Characterizing fragmentation and sub-Jovian clump properties in magnetized young protoplanetary discs

ABSTRACT We study the initial development, structure, and evolution of protoplanetary clumps formed in three-dimensional resistive magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations of self-gravitating discs. The magnetic field grows by means of the recently identified gravitational instability dynamo. Clumps are identified and their evolution is tracked finely both backward and forward in time. Their properties and evolutionary path is compared with clumps in companion simulations without magnetic fields. We find that magnetic and rotational energy are important in the clumps’ outer regions, while in the cores, despite appreciable magnetic field amplification, thermal pressure is most important in counteracting gravity. Turbulent kinetic energy is of a smaller scale than magnetic energy in the clumps. Compared with non-magnetized clumps, rotation is less prominent, which results in lower angular momentum in much better agreement with observations. In order to understand the very low sub-Jovian masses of clumps forming in MHD simulations, we revisit the perturbation theory of magnetized sheets finding support for a previously proposed magnetic destabilization in low-shear regions. This can help explaining why fragmentation ensues on a scale more than an order of magnitude smaller than that of the Toomre mass. The smaller fragmentation scale and the high magnetic pressure in clumps’ envelopes explain why clumps in magnetized discs are typically in the super-Earth to Neptune mass regime rather than super-Jupiter as in conventional disc instability. Our findings put forward a viable alternative to core accretion to explain widespread formation of intermediate-mass planets.

Accretion disc backflow in resistive MHD simulations

ABSTRACT We investigate accretion onto a central star, with the size, rotation rate, and magnetic dipole of a young stellar object, to study the flow pattern (velocity and density) of the fluid within and outside of the disc. We perform resistive magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations of thin discs, varying the parameters such as the stellar rotation rate and (anomalous) coefficients of viscosity and resistivity in the disc. To provide a benchmark for the results and to compare them with known analytic results, we also perform purely hydrodynamic (HD) simulations for the same problem. Although obtained for different situations with differing inner boundary condition, the disc structure in the HD simulations closely follows the analytic solution of Kluzniak and Kita – in particular, a region of ‘mid-plane’ backflow exists in the right range of radii, depending on the viscosity parameter. In the MHD solutions, whenever the magnetic Prandtl number does not exceed a certain critical value, the mid-plane backflow exists throughout the accretion disc, extending all the way down to the foot point of the accretion funnel flow where the disc transitions to a magnetic funnel flow. For values of the magnetic Prandtl number close to the critical value the backflow and the inner disc undergo a quasi-periodic radial oscillation, otherwise the backflow is steady, as is the disc solution. From our results, supplemented by our reading of the literature, we suggest that mid-plane backflow is a real, physical, and not only numerical feature of at least some accretion discs.

On the frequency bifurcations of the MHD startup modes in NSTX

The observed bifurcations of the low frequency (<50 kHz) and low toroidal periodicity (n < 5) magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) activity often present in the initial part of the National Spherical Tokamak Experiment (NSTX) discharges can be explained by the evolution of the radial profile of the safety factor (q=rBϕ/RBθ) crossing multiple rational surfaces in the core. Important performance limiting instability mechanisms in the NSTX spherical tokamak are often linked to low frequency and low-n MHD activity. They are quite common in long-pulse NSTX plasmas. They can be present at the beginning of the plasma current flat-top, at the end of the discharge or during the whole duration, and they have been observed to deleteriously impact performance over a wide range of q95. An interesting feature observed in some NSTX discharges is the presence of a bifurcation in the frequency of the low n modes, as low as n = 1, that have frequencies comparable to the plasma core rotation divided by n. Equilibrium reconstructions constrained by magnetic diagnostics data and motional stark effect pitch angle radial profiles suggest that the observed bifurcations are linked to a fast evolving minimum value of q. 3D non-linear resistive MHD simulations show that these modes are ideal and exist as non-resonant before the correspondent rational surface enters the plasma.

Data-driven assessment of magnetic charged particle confinement parameter scaling in magnetized liner inertial fusion experiments on Z

In magneto-inertial fusion, the ratio of the characteristic fuel length perpendicular to the applied magnetic field R to the α-particle Larmor radius ϱα is a critical parameter setting the scale of electron thermal-conduction loss and charged burn-product confinement. Using a previously developed deep-learning-based Bayesian inference tool, we obtain the magnetic-field fuel-radius product BR∝R/ϱα from an ensemble of 16 magnetized liner inertial fusion (MagLIF) experiments. Observations of the trends in BR are consistent with relative trade-offs between compression and flux loss as well as the impact of mix from 1D resistive radiation magneto-hydrodynamics simulations in all but two experiments, for which 3D effects are hypothesized to play a significant role. Finally, we explain the relationship between BR and the generalized Lawson parameter χ. Our results indicate the ability to improve performance in MagLIF through careful tuning of experimental inputs, while also highlighting key risks from mix and 3D effects that must be mitigated in scaling MagLIF to higher currents with a next-generation driver.

Mallat Scattering Transformation based surrogate for Magnetohydrodynamics

A Machine and Deep Learning (MLDL) methodology is developed and applied to give a high fidelity, fast surrogate for 2D resistive MagnetoHydroDynamic (MHD) simulations of Magnetic Liner Inertial Fusion (MagLIF) implosions. The resistive MHD code GORGON is used to generate an ensemble of implosions with different liner aspect ratios, initial gas preheat temperatures (that is, different adiabats), and different liner perturbations. The liner density and magnetic field as functions of x, y, and z were generated. The Mallat Scattering Transformation (MST) is taken of the logarithm of both fields and a Principal Components Analysis (PCA) is done on the logarithm of the MST of both fields. The fields are projected onto the PCA vectors and a small number of these PCA vector components are kept. Singular Value Decompositions of the cross correlation of the input parameters to the output logarithm of the MST of the fields, and of the cross correlation of the SVD vector components to the PCA vector components are done. This allows the identification of the PCA vectors vis-a-vis the input parameters. Finally, a Multi Layer Perceptron (MLP) neural network with ReLU activation and a simple three layer encoder/decoder architecture is trained on this dataset to predict the PCA vector components of the fields as a function of time. Details of the implosion, stagnation, and the disassembly are well captured. Examination of the PCA vectors and a permutation importance analysis of the MLP show definitive evidence of an inverse turbulent cascade into a dipole emergent behavior. The orientation of the dipole is set by the initial liner perturbation. The analysis is repeated with a version of the MST which includes phase, called Wavelet Phase Harmonics (WPH). While WPH do not give the physical insight of the MST, they can and are inverted to give field configurations as a function of time, including field-to-field correlations.

Ideal MHD induced temperature flattening in spherical tokamaks

This paper extends the analysis first presented in Jardin et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 128, 245001 (2022)] to more thoroughly examine the stability of spherical torus equilibrium to ideal magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) infernal modes and their nonlinear consequences. We demonstrate that in a 3D resistive magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulation of a NSTX discharge, anomalous transport can occur due to these instabilities. We generate a family of equilibrium of differing β and use this to show that these instabilities could explain the experimentally observed flattening of the electron temperature profile at modest β. The modes studied in this paper are found to occur with poloidal mode number m and toroidal mode number n when the ratio m/n is in the range of 1.2–1.5, when the central safety factor is in this range or slightly lower, and when the central region has very low magnetic shear. Our analysis gives some insight as to why the unstable linear growth rates are oscillatory functions of the toroidal mode number n. We present a simulation of an initially stable configuration that passes through a stability boundary at a critical β as it is heated. We also show that a particular NSTX discharge is unstable to these modes over a timescale of several hundred ms. We conclude that these modes must be taken into account when performing predictive modeling. An appendix shows that similar modes can be found in R / a = 4 tokamaks for certain q-profiles and β values.

Relativistic resistive magneto-hydrodynamics code for high-energy heavy-ion collisions

We construct a relativistic resistive magneto-hydrodynamic (RRMHD) numerical simulation code for high-energy heavy-ion collisions as a first designed code in the Milne coordinates. We split the system of differential equations into two parts, a non-stiff and a stiff part. For the non-stiff part, we evaluate the numerical flux using HLL approximated Riemann solver and execute the time integration by the second-order of Runge–Kutta algorithm. For the stiff part, which appears in Ampere’s law, we integrate the equations using semi-analytic solutions of the electric field. We employ the generalized Lagrange multiplier method to ensure the divergence-free constraint for the magnetic field and Gauss’s law. We confirm that our code reproduces well the results of standard RRMHD tests in the Cartesian coordinates. In the Milne coordinates, the code with high conductivity is validated against relativistic ideal MHD tests. We also verify the semi-analytic solutions of the accelerating longitudinal expansion of relativistic resistive magneto-hydrodynamics in high-energy heavy-ion collisions in comparison with our numerical result. Our numerical code reproduces these solutions.

Dust motion and possibility of dust growth in a growing circumstellar disk

ABSTRACT We calculate the evolution of a star-forming cloud core using a three-dimensional resistive magnetohydrodynamics simulation, treating dust grains as Lagrangian particles, to investigate the dust motion in the early star formation stage. We prepare six different-sized set of dust particles in the range ad = 0.01–$1000\, \mu$m, where ad is the dust grain size. In a gravitationally collapsing cloud, a circumstellar disk forms around a protostar and drives a protostellar outflow. Almost all the small dust grains (ad ≲ 10–$100\, \mu$m) initially distributed in the region θ0 ≲ 45° are ejected from the center by the outflow, where θ0 is the initial zenith angle relative to the rotation axis, whereas only a small number of the large dust grains ($a_{\rm d} \gtrsim 100\, \mu$m) distributed in the region are ejected. All other grains fall onto either the protostar or disk without being ejected by the outflow. Regardless of the dust grain size, the behavior of the dust motion is divided into two trends after dust particles settle into the circumstellar disk. The dust grains reaching the inner disk region from the upper envelope preferentially fall onto the protostar, while those reaching the outer disk region or disk outer edge from the envelope can survive without an inward radial drift. These surviving grains can induce dust growth. Thus, we expect that the outer disk regions could be a favored place of planet formation.

Time-resolved velocity and ion sound speed measurements from simultaneous bow shock imaging and inductive probe measurements.

We present a technique to measure the time-resolved velocity and ion sound speed in magnetized, supersonic high-energy-density plasmas. We place an inductive ("b-dot") probe in a supersonic pulsed-power-driven plasma flow and measure the magnetic field advected by the plasma. As the magnetic Reynolds number is large (RM > 10), the plasma flow advects a magnetic field proportional to the current at the load. This enables us to estimate the flow velocity as a function of time from the delay between the current at the load and the signal at the probe. The supersonic flow also generates a hydrodynamic bow shock around the probe, the structure of which depends on the upstream sonic Mach number. By imaging the shock around the probe with a Mach-Zehnder interferometer, we determine the upstream Mach number from the shock Mach angle, which we then use to determine the ion sound speed from the known upstream velocity. We use the sound speed to infer the value of Z̄Te, where Z̄ is the average ionization and Te is the electron temperature. We use this diagnostic to measure the time-resolved velocity and sound speed of a supersonic (MS ∼ 8), super-Alfvénic (MA ∼ 2) aluminum plasma generated during the ablation stage of an exploding wire array on the Magpie generator (1.4 MA, 250ns). The velocity and Z̄Te measurements agree well with the optical Thompson scattering measurements reported in the literature and with 3D resistive magnetohydrodynamic simulations in GORGON.

Thermally enhanced tearing in solar current sheets: Explosive reconnection with plasmoid-trapped condensations

Context. Thermal instability plays a major role in condensation phenomena in the solar corona (e.g., for coronal rain and prominence formation). In flare-relevant current sheets, tearing instability may trigger explosive reconnection and plasmoid formation. However, how the two instabilities influence the disruption of current concentrations in the solar corona has received less attention to date. Aims. We explore how the thermal and tearing modes reinforce each other in the fragmentation of a current sheet in the solar corona through an explosive reconnection process, characterized by the formation of plasmoids which interact and trap condensing plasma. Methods. We used a resistive magnetohydrodynamic simulation of a 2D current layer, incorporating the non-adiabatic effects of optically thin radiative energy loss and background heating using the open-source code MPI-AMRVAC. Multiple levels of adaptive mesh refined grids are used to achieve a high resolution to resolve the fine structures during the evolution of the system. Results. Our parametric survey explores different resistivities and plasma-β to quantify the instability growth rate in the linear and nonlinear regimes. We note that for dimensionless resistivity values within 10−4 − 5 × 10−3, we obtain explosive behavior where thermal instability and tearing behavior reinforce each other. This is clearly below the usual critical Lundquist number range of pure resistive explosive plasmoid formation. We calculate the mean growth rate for the linear phase and different nonlinear phases of the evolution. The nonlinear growth rates follow a weak power-law dependency with resistivity. The fragmentation of the current sheet and the formation of the plasmoids in the nonlinear phase of the evolution due to the thermal and tearing instabilities are obtained. The formation of plasmoids is found for the Lundquist number (SL) range 4.6 × 103 − 2.34 × 105. We quantify the temporal variation in the plasmoid numbers and the density filling factor of the plasmoids for different physical conditions. We also find that the maximum plasmoid numbers scale as SL0.223.Within the nonlinearly coalescing plasmoid chains, localized cool condensations gather, realizing density and temperature contrasts similar to coronal rain or prominences.

Gravitoturbulent dynamo in global simulations of gaseous disks

Context. The turbulence driven by gravitational instabilities (GIs) can amplify magnetic fields in massive gaseous disks. This GI dynamo may appear in young circumstellar disks, whose weak ionization challenges other amplification routes, as well as in active galactic nuclei. Although regarded as a large-scale dynamo, only local simulations have so far described its kinematic regime. Aims. We study the GI dynamo in global magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) models of accretion disks, focusing on its kinematic phase. Methods. We perform resistive MHD simulations with the PLUTO code for different radiative cooling times and electrical resistivities. A weak magnetic field seeds the dynamo, and we adopt mean-field and heuristic models to capture its essence. Results. We recover the same induction process leading to magnetic field amplification as previously identified in local simulations. The dynamo is, however, global in nature, connecting distant annuli of the disk via a large-scale dynamo mode of a fixed growth rate. This large-scale amplification can be described by a mean-field model that does not rely on conventional α-Ω effects. When varying the disk parameters we find an optimal resistivity that facilitates magnetic amplification, whose magnetic Reynolds number, ℛm ≲ 10, is substantially smaller than in local simulations. Unlike local simulations, we find an optimal cooling rate and the existence of global oscillating dynamo modes. The nonlinear saturation of the dynamo puts the disk in a strongly magnetized turbulent state on the margins of the effective range of GI. In our simulations, the accretion power eventually exceeds the threshold required by local thermal balance against cooling, leaving the long-term nonlinear outcome of the GI dynamo uncertain.

Ideal MHD Limited Electron Temperature in Spherical Tokamaks.

It is well documented that the central electron temperature in the national spherical torus experiment (NSTX) remains largely unchanged as the external heating power, and hence the normalized volume averaged plasma pressure β increases [Stutman, Phys. Rev. Lett. 102, 115002 (2009)PRLTAO0031-900710.1103/PhysRevLett.102.115002]. Here we present a hypothesis that low n, pressure driven ideal magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) instabilities that are nondisruptive, can break magnetic surfaces in the central region and thereby flatten the electron temperature profiles. We demonstrate this mechanism in a 3D resistive MHD simulation of a NSTX discharge. By varying the toroidal magnetic field strength, and/or the heating power, we show that there is a critical value of β, above which the central temperature profile no longer peaks on axis.

The Role of Resistivity on the Efficiency of Magnetic Reconnection in MHD

AbstractUsing a resistive MagnetoHydroDynamic (MHD) simulation, we study how the magnitude and shape of diffusion influence magnetic reconnection. Specifically, we investigate how and why the reconnection rate is influenced by variations in the diffusion distribution and magnitude. By running multiple MHD simulations where we vary the localized resistivity, we find that the properties of the diffusion region greatly influence the rate of reconnection. Increasing the magnitude of the imposed resistivity results in a higher reconnection rate, but the rate saturates at approximately 0.2. We show how a redistribution of the current density, leading to a bifurcated current sheet, play a major role in this limitation. In addition, we investigate the impact of different shapes of resistive region. The shape of the diffusion region also plays a major role in how efficient the reconnection energy conversion can operate. The highest reconnection rate, approximately 0.25, is achieved for an optimal opening angle. Our results imply that reconnection has a speed limit that may depend on properties outside the diffusion region.
